That was in my private tree. I guess Christian missed it in his
translation commit runthrough. It's in the tree now, although not in the
build on my site. Do you want me to upload a fixed version, or are you
going to pull it down from CVS?

Strange. I looked for the fix for #237706: discover: Lithuanian
translation, and am unable to find it. The debian/po/lt.po file is
missing in CVS. Yet the BTS entry claim that it should be commited.

This card is the standard 802.11b sold by apple. I think that it is
plugged to the PCMCIA controller, but it is inside the computer. Maybe
it is not listed with the lspci.

This is what dmesg says about it.

These status are not in package/debian/po/, but in package/po/, aren't

Bug#237894: installation-reports: partman doesn't start and wifi isn't automatically detected on powerbook

I'm having trouble finding the correct PCI ID in this list. Here's what
I think everything is so far. If someone could please shed some light on
what I've got wrong, it'd be much appreciated.

Some kind of Mac-specific I/O port. This is actively ignored by

I had to Google this. It appears to be the Firewire controller. Unknown
to discover.

Ethernet card. Discover tries to load the sungem module.

As far as I know, all the stuff that is unknown to discover is simply
built-in to the powerpc kernel, and thus doesn't need to have any
modules loaded.

If someone who knows more about the airport, or at least has a powerbook
to figure this out on, could take a look at what's going on here, I'd
appreciate it. Thanks!

Comments/Problems:

did very minimal install, just wanted windowmaker and a few other
things since not much memory/disk/cpu on this box.

found that downloading installer modules from net did NOT work.
complained that it could not find release files on cdrom or mirrors
if i used any installer modules pulled down from the network. had to
do everything from floppies/cdrom image (i installed about 10 times
or so before i got it finally)

noticed in some installs ext3 was not an option for some reason for
filesystems, other times it was.

only problem post-install is that 'locales' is tweaked, and tries to
reconfigure every time i apt-get install something. i end up with:

Setting up locales (2.3.2.ds1-11) ...
Generating locales...
C.UTF-8...cannot open locale definition file `C': No such file or
directory
dpkg: error processing locales (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4
Setting up make (3.80-6) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 locales
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

trying to figure out how to fix this now.

also once the core system was installed, it didn't carry over any of
the network configuration. had to manually setup
/etc/network/interfaces, and tell it to pre-load e100 module for
onboard nic, and configure net manually.

also, once base system was up, did an 'apt-get install wmaker', which
pulled down most things, but did not pull down or configure
xserver-xfree86 for some reason. had to do that manually.

very nice work. having an installer that auto-detects hardware was
key to me being able to switch from redhat to debian. thank you very
much!

That's fine. Some people have kernels who don't have these built-in, so
I'd rather have discover support them and spit out a few error messages
for people who have them built-in.

After discover showed a list of modules to load (I left all selected) I
received an error because sungem, ide-scsi, usb-storage aren't found.
I think that all of them are built into the kernel.

My wifi card (airport) wasn't detected but wifi tools were installed. I did a
modprobe airport in tty2 and then configured via DHCP the network.

Running partman gave me two problems:
1. it told me that the partition type isn't known for my architecture
2. while starting it was stuck at 14% for 1 minute, then I stopped it

No more SATA hangs! yay.

everything went smoothly till the base-install ran. Part or most of the way
through the base install (after tasksel was configured), the d-i step menu
popped up (the progress dialog from the base system install is visible
behind the menu). If I select "Install GRUB boot loader" or "Install base
system" it goes to the "install base system" step and complains that the
target is unclean. proceeding from there despite the warning results in a
"base system install error" because /target/usr/bin/awk already exists.

Comments/Problems:

I did several installs and I found several problems ... but I did a install
without problems !

First, partman doesn't know how to do a automatic partitioning on the whole
disk. I got this error :
"can't have the end before the start"

And if there is no partitions, it can't even create one. But if there are
already some partitions, it can delete 2 and create 1 with the space of the
two.

partman only proposes ext2, but this bug is fixed I think.

And last problem, silo-installer can't work with a reiserfs /. It's normal,
but the error message must be more explicit.

But sparc64 netboot works (at least for me) !

yes, that's correct. All strings *in pt_BR.po* are translated. Please
run a msgfmt to the .pot-template and compare the results:
455 translated in your .po and about 282(I don't remember) in the template.

the .po-files are updated before being checked. You can download this
updated file in files// or do it yourself by running "msgfmt -U
file.po templ.pot" (-U only if gettext from testing/unstable)

(the po-files in CVS are most-time updated, but the po-files in
2nd-stage aren't)

Take a look at partman/partman/debian/changelog, translator names
are not UTF-8 encoded.

Yes, this is a known bug. It appears to be due to a problem in the
devfs support in the 2.4.24 kernel, affecting only SCSI CDROM devices.
It's possible this may be fixed in 2.4.25, but I have no way to test
here. Would you be willing to test a 2.4.25-based d-i image if I build
it, to see if this fixes the devfs problems?

  $ msgmerge -U pt_BR.po apt-all.pot
  $ msgfmt -o /dev/null -v pt_BR.po
285 translated messages, 1 fuzzy translation.

This is the result printed on Dennis page. But it is indeed not
accurate, have a look at buildd logs and you will find more fuzzy
strings. So the problem here is that apt-all.pot is not up-to-date.
Here is an untested patch, but someone should ask apt maintainers to
update it.

countrychooser translations broken by iso-codes

2004-03-13 Thread Joey Hess
I noticed that in many languages, countrychooser's menu item is
displayed as a blank line. This includes Chinese, Japanese, Greek,
Russian, Norwegian. Some investigation revealed that this is because
mktemplates was is not set -e, so when debconf-updatepo failed, it
continues and built a broken package. debconf-updatepo failed like this:

xgettext: Non-ASCII string at ../templates.tmp:3.
Please specify the source encoding through --from-code.
WARNING: It seems that none of the files in POTFILES.in contain marked strings

This is because /usr/share/iso-codes/iso_3166.tab has added to it the Aland
islands, excpet the A is spelled Å. I have put in a nasty hack to deal with
this so we can get a working version of the package again, but I wonder if
that file should include non-ascii strings?

Also, one last problem -- I noticed that even with these fixes, the generated
templates file has blank lines for the nl translations.

On sparc, ext3 is built into the kernel. So kernelmodules_ext3 fails to
load it, does not find it in /proc/modules, and I think this makes it
not be offered as a choice. It should be simple to fix; just look in
/proc/filesystems too. The other filesystem modules probably need
similar changes.

You are correct. I can no longer reproduce the problem with a /home

New discover1 upload needed

2004-03-13 Thread David Nusinow
Hello all,
I've prepared a new discover upload. The translators have been
fantastic lately, so there's tons of new translations in there, as well
as a few other fixes including the ash/dash dependency. In addition,
I've prepared a discover-data upload to along with it, with a few more
pcmcia fixes and some other minor bugs. The sources are located at
http://www.tufts.edu/~dnusin01/discover/. If someone would please upload
them for me, as I'd like to get these updates in before the next
release. Thank you!

Please consider also commiting the latest Brazilian Portuguese (pt_BR)
translation sent to BTS today. It's filed as #237865. Apart from this
one, I can see an update to Lithuanian in BTS, filed as #237706.

Hmm. That's weird. I know that seppy does provides .po files for all the
packages listed as not yet fully translated into his web page at
http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/2nd-stage/files/, but just to
be sure I went ahead and apt-get source'd apt in order to see what was
there in terms of pt_BR translations and guess what ? It was already
up-to-date, as can be seen bellow :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/i18n/apt/test/apt-0.5.23/po$ msgfmt -o /dev/null -v
pt_BR.po
455 mensagens traduzidas.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/i18n/apt/test/apt-0.5.23/po$

Yet more weird is the fact that seppy's page was right about dpkg being
not fully transtaled for pt_BR (seppy's page correctly told me that
there were 4 fuzzy and 1 non-translated strings).

So, it seems that for some packages seppy's page's right while it's wrong
for some others (not sure which ones).

In the apt case explained above, which one's correct ? Current apt or
seppy's page ?

Bug#237865: discover: Please apply attached patch to update Brazilian Portuguese po/pt_BR.po translation

2004-03-13 Thread Andre Luis Lopes
Package: discover
Version: 1.5-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Please consider applying the attached patch in order to update
discover's Brazilian Portuguese translation (it's not the debconf
template translation but instead the po/pt_BR.po translation).

It was already checked against errors and none were found. Please note
that it's important to apply this patch as discover's used in Sarge's
second stage installation.

Ok... that looks like it's right. dmfe is, as far as I can see, the
Davicom driver for your onboard card. Perhaps it's a problem with the
driver itself. I'm going to clone this bug and assign it to the
kernel-image package.

The list with "(default)" at the end is better to read. The rest looks

Thanks for finding this. I think I've fixed it in CVS, won't be
available for a few days in the archive though.

I looked again at your report, and one possibility is some breakage that
was present in base-installer on or about March 9th. That took a while
to get moved into testing, and I think it happened yesterday. The fixed
version is on debian.mirrors.pair.com now. I expect this will probably
fix your problem.

Please, wait litle bit more before uploading a newer discover package.
I'm currently finishing updating Brazilian Portuguese discover
translation and would file a BR with a patch attached.

Some minutes more are enough and I'll post here when I'm done.

It does, or better, log-changes script does. It can not convert them only
if the encoding of the .po-file is not the same as the encoding of the
translator's name.

BTW, the quoted text looks perfectly encoded, where is the problem?

Yes, I'm sure.

I also think I've found one of the problem:

debian.mirrors.pair.com does not use any path prefix. "dists" and "pool"
are in the top level of the ftp or http root. As a result, $DIRECTORY is
the empty string.

from base-installer's postinst:

configure_apt () {
# let apt inside the chroot see the cdrom
umount /target$DIRECTORY 2>/dev/null || true
if [ "$PROTOCOL" = file ] ; then
[irrelevant stuff, since protocol is http]
fi

# Move files to where apt expects them to avoid another download or
copy.
APTLISTDIR=/target/var/lib/apt/lists
APTDIR=`echo $DIRECTORY | tr "/" "_"`

DEBOOTSTRAPLIST="$APTLISTDIR/debootstrap.invalid_dists_${DISTRIBUTION}"
APTLIST="$APTLISTDIR/${MIRROR}${APTDIR}_dists_${DISTRIBUTION}"
mv ${DEBOOTSTRAPLIST}_Release ${APTLIST}_Release
mv ${DEBOOTSTRAPLIST}_main_binary-${ARCH}_Packages
${APTLIST}_main_binary-${ARCH}_Packages

# sources.list uses space to separate the components, not comma
COMPONENTS=`echo $COMPONENTS | tr , " "`
APTSOURCE="$PROTOCOL://$MIRROR$DIRECTORY"

[ ! -d /target/etc/apt ] && mkdir -p /target/etc/apt
echo "deb $APTSOURCE $DISTRIBUTION $COMPONENTS" >
/target/etc/apt/sources.list
}

This also explains why the run that I produced the logfiles from is
different from the earlier runs (the earlier runs completed an "apt-get
update" before dying): In all the earlier runs, I had a /home filesystem.
This time around, to save formatting time, I didn't create it. As a result,
umount /target/ succeeded instead of getting a device busy error. I will
now re-run the install with /home present and get some new logfiles.

The only German keymap that was selectable (in German-Install) was
german (nodeadkeys), although deadkeys should be the standard. After
install console-switching did not work. Finally found that:

install-keymap /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwertz/de-latin1.kmap.gz

solved the problem. After partititioning the Size of the partititions
was shown incorrectly, e.g. 32 kb instead of 4GB. Fortunately the
installer did not reject installation.

Apart from that it worked excellent.

Bug#237843: Package: installation-reports

2004-03-13 Thread Fred Sienkiewicz
Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: sarge-i386-netinst.iso beta-2, built on
2004.01.03, from gluck.debian.org
uname -a:
Date: Morning of 13 March 2004
Method: Downloaded & Burned beta-2 ISO, booted from CD, then network
install from <> through a local OpenBSD router.

Machine: NEC Versa LX
Processor: 233 MHz Pentium II w/MMX
Memory: 64 MB
Root Device: IDE Toshiba MK6014MAP / 6 GB
Root Size/partition table:
Output of lspci:

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [E]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]

[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:
My Xircom Cardbus 56k Modem/10-100 Ethernet card combo [rbem56g-100] to
autodetect using its module -- xirc2ps_cs. After the reboot, I had to
jet
out to a normal console, modprobe the yenta_socket module to get the NEC
Versa LX's Ricoh rl5c478 cardbus hardware to detect & configure, and
then I could
modprobe the Xircom module. After that DHCP worked fine and the rest of
the install went without a hitch; I'd have been lost if I didn't know
anything about linux though. Maybe something can be done about
detecting the Versa LX's cardbus hardware automatically?

Overally, seems to be a linux hardware support issue and not a Debian
installer issue. The installer is great and seems to work very well. I
was very pleased.

Peace,
Fred

Are you sure you told it to format and mount the partition? This could
easily be leftovers from a previous install, and nothing that was run
unmounts /target.

I see evidence that the broken out of date mirror is causing at least
some problems in the logs.

Hi,

When i tried the Debian installer, I used an usb keyboard. It worked
well in the debian-installer, but once I rebooted, I had no keyboard.

To fix this issue, I simply add the right modules to /etc/modules=20
(I can't remind which modules it was, I made my tests last week). But
this solution is not very good, because during the boot process you
do not have any keyboard...:-(=20
(My keyboard is active just a few second before the login prompt)

I belive it would be nice to include the requiered modules to the
initrd.

I am not sure that this bug is well assigned, so feel free to reassigned
it to the right package. I have no real idea about who is relevant for
this issue.

Thanks in advance,

I'm closing this bug on confirmation that USB keyboards do work after
reboot.

On reboot, discover (or hotplug) runs to discover which modules are
required and loads them automatically. This loads the USB keyboard
modules.

Bug#237841: install: short version for access method: "use existing format" is not neccessarily recognized with his long version (possibly only in german translation)

2004-03-13 Thread Willi Mann
Package: install
Severity: minor

I did not associate

Zugriffsmethode: Bestehendes Format benutzen

with

Zweck dieser Partition:
Die vorhandenen Daten auf der Partition erhalten und benutzen

in the first moment.

I suggest to include all words of the short form in the long form:

Bestehendes Format benutzen

Bestehendes Format und Daten der Partition erhalten und benutzen

I strongly believe this would be more intuitive.

autopartkit override disparity

2004-03-13 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

autopartkit_0.82_i386.udeb: package says priority is standard, override says optional.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]

Bug#237833: install: partitioning fails if two swap partitions are available

2004-03-13 Thread Willi Mann
Package: install
Severity: normal

I have two disks each of them has its own swap partition (from different
Linux installations)

Steps to reproduce:

1) Create / partition.
2) Accept layout.

After the creation of the filesystem on the root partition, screen turns
red:

Zwei Dateisysteme sollen gleichzeitig in none eingebunden werden:
(Two filesystems shall be mounted in none at the same time:)
IDE1 Master, Partition #8 und IDE Slave, Partition #2

Bitte beheben Sie das, ...

Workaround:

Change access method of one swap partition to "don't use partition"

Please either only use the first detected partition, use the partition
that's closest to the root partition, mount both swap partition or ask
the user which partitions to take.

  Some other points are:

2.
Perhaps the documentation should suggest that with a serial console
one has to be cautious with the setting of the language, country and
keyboard. In particular, there should be some matching between the
settings of the terminal in which the console is displayed and that of
the system that is installed. On the other hand, experienced
administrators are aware of that already.

3.
I had to configure the network manually because it turned out that the
dhcp method puts too much load onto my weak dhcp server. It took me a
long time to find out that the constant failures to install the base
system, which looked un reproducible, are due to the fact that my router,
which is also a dhcp server, can not handle the fast rate of dhcp
requests that the system to be installed is putting on it. Perhaps the
expert method of the installation should offer the user a choice about
the frequency of renewals of the lease contract? Alternatively, maybe the
default should be set to a much smaller renewal requests frequency?

4.
I believe that with a full installed system that doesn't use a
frame buffer, specifying

 console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600n8

as kernel parameters will make a serial console the main console of the
system while still keeping VTs in the physical console that is attached
to the system. Is there a way to have something like that with the d-i?

5.
When specifying parameters for the kernel modules (like IRQ and IO),
having a way to select to which modules parameters should be asked for
will be helpful. Iterating through all the models just to press `enter'
because specific parameters are not required is annoying.

It seems that output-l10n-changes does not recode translator names
into UTF-8.

I have no news from Bastian about the changes in the cdebconf text frontend.
The new interface looks IMO much better, I was able to finish the 1st stage
without any problem, except for language selection (because there is
a long list of long lines).
Apart from translation fixes, the only changes are in
src/modules/frontend/text/text.c (as shown by "cvs diff -r version_0_57"),
so the newt frontend has not been changed at all, and uploading a new
version should be safe.
