install help: boot floopies + sarge-i386-netinst.iso (d-i beta3)

2004-04-06 Thread Andrés A. Rocchia
Hello, first sorry for my english I´m trying to improve it :)

I´m trying to install debian sarge with boot floppies and
sarge-i386-netinst.iso (d-i beta3) mounted as a loop device in the
ramdisk.

 I put the sarge-i386-netinst.iso in a ext2 partition /dev/hda6
(/home) then boot with the boot floppies (boot.img and root.img),
then I use the cd-drivers floppy and mount the
sarge-i386-netinst.iso in /sarge_cd as a loop device.

Now I want to tell to d-i that go with the instalation from there
(/sarge_cd) but I don´t know how to do that. Can someone give me
some help?

  thankyou in advance.

Comments/Problems:

First, kudos! Much better than previous installer betas. There was one

First, the issue: There was no cdrom entry in fstab when install was
complete. Easy fix, but momentarily confusing.

Opinions:
1. There are three visible Hardware Detection phases. I don't understand
why, and to the uneducated eye, it looks like a problem. If they are
doing different

Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

After my complete network installation of debian unstable, using
DHCP, PXE-booting, TFTP, and stuff, which pretty much worked,
the generated /etc/fstab contains a cdrom entry without a device name,
like so:

/dev/hda3 / ext2 ...
  /cdrom iso9660 ...

which is probably not the right thing to do. Would be better to use
/dev/cdrom or just not add the entry if the installer doesn't know
if I have a cdrom drive or not (like when I didn't boot from one).

Just my $0.05 worth...

On a system that I've already got an operating system installed on, that I
really, really would prefer not to hose, I'm going to fear and distrust
anything that uses the words "Automatic" and "Partition" together, and
choose some other option that implies I have more control over whether or
not I accidentally hose the partition that has my other OS on it...

Particularly if I'm not confident before selecting the item that it isn't
going to go off on it's merry way and do something unrevertable before I get
a chance to go "hang on!".

I suspect users new to Linux/Debian but familiar with PCs in general are
going to take this line of reasoning.

regards

Andrew

Request for review of partman-newworld

2004-04-06 Thread Colin Watson
I've checked in partman-newworld, which wraps up the method for creating
the special Apple_Bootstrap partition you need to boot newworld PowerMac
systems. I've tested it somewhat, although not exactly with a
straight-through install or all error cases because I'm not in a
position to trash my current disk. As such, I haven't uploaded it to
unstable yet.

This was my first exposure to partman's internals, so I'd appreciate it
if a partman expert (Anton?) could look it over for any glaring errors.

Cheers,

Not country-related; this is strictly language/dialect related.

This one is probably the closest to being actually country-based, though
even there it isn't always, as a few countries have multiple simultaneous
currencies.

Again, varies within some countries. And so on.

Again, not really purely country-based. Here in the US, it's 24-hour if

OK, I guess what I'm saying is that country-based defaults are *very* rough
and not really that good. I suppose they're better than nothing,
though. :-)

Yeah, but Taiwan Province isn't what is meant. :-P What's meant is Chinese
(Traditional) writing system, ROC currency, timezone, etc.

Country/Region/Area is simply the Wrong Category, especially considering
that Hong Kong uses Traditional Chinese and so forth. Unfortunately, the
lang_COUNTRY locale system is too entrenched at this point. :-P

Install on an NEC Versa M320 laptop

2004-04-06 Thread Andrew Pollock
Hi,

This is a quasi-install report. I helped a friend from Uni install Debian on
his laptop (an NEC Versa M320) using the beta3 CD.

He did most of the install, I wanted to observe from a useability
perspective. He had pretty much no prior Linux knowledge.

The install itself went really well. An observation was that when the laptop
was warm booted from Windows XP, it hung completely when the e100 module was
installed, both during hardware detection and after installation. Must be
some hardware bug.

About the only useability thing was during base-config, when he was prompted
to enter the name of a user to create, he expected what he typed to
overwrite the "Debian User" default value, whereas one has to backspace over
it first. Not sure if this behaviour is something easily changed.

It was the first time I'd attempted the automatic partitioning with a disk
that had some free space, and it "just worked" and was really cool. How is
the ratio between the root partition and the /home partition determined? I
forget how much free space we made available for the install, but I did
notice that the root partition was something like 5G big, and the /home was
13G. For a laptop with a single user, I would have given a tad more space
for installing software. I'd be surprised if he gets anywhere near filling
13G with user data.

regards

Andrew

Re: Location list proposal [was: why must Debian call Taiwan a "Province of China"?]

2004-04-06 Thread Dave Jones
The country's name is "ROC"(Republic of China).

Taiwan Province is an administrative subdivision of the Republic of China (ROC). Even
though the province-level municipalities of Taipei City and Kaohsiung City are on the
island of Taiwan, they are not administratively part of the Province. Taiwan Province
also excludes Kinmen and Lienchiang Counties, which are adminstered as the ROC part of
Fujian Province.

So Taiwan _is_ a province, both for "ROC" and "PRC". This is neutral.

That might be a problem of my cd-drive, but I wonder why I was able too boot
busnisscard sized iso and beta 3.

I installed via wireless lan, but needed to switch to shell, and set the essid
manually, since my router hides it.

After reboot network didn't work anymore, I needed to set wep-key and essid
manually.

Las question: I booted with the option "vga=791", since I like to use the whole
display of my notebook. However: After the reboot this kernel-parameter got
lost. Would it be possible to check, if the user specified a kernel parameter
and add them to the bootloader?

It's used for:

- collation order of text
- currency symbols and formatting
- numeric formatting characteristics (thousands separator, decimal point)
- characteristics of time representation (24/12h, : vs ., ...)
- paper size (in theory)

any or all of which can vary per country, even among countries which use
the same language.

It also can be used to support separate regional translations where
dialects are sufficiently different to warrant it, and can also
distinguish between locales which use different character sets to
represent the same language.

Oh, and it's also a good heuristic for guessing the user's timezone,
keyboard, *and* mirror of choice, making it much more likely that we can
present the correct default option to the user for each of these
selections.

In the "Regional and Language Options" in Microsoft Windows XP's "Control Panel",
"Chinese (Taiwan)" is in the list of "Standards and formats"
And "Taiwan" is in the list of "Location".

Was Microsoft Windows XP banned by the China government?
Did mainland Chinese people refuse to use Microsoft Windows XP?

Yeah, and as I said elsewhere, "Country" is a stupid way to distinguish. If
we're really getting into dialects, there's *way* more than that, and they
*don't* follow country borders. Unfortunately, we're kind of stuck with it
at the moment, because we'd have to change a *lot* of programs.

We can't just rename it "Dialect", because "Country" is also used for the
choice of currency symbol, separators in numbers, etc. Bleh. :-)

It is probably for distinguishing the different dialects of languages.
For example, there is American English, Australian English, British

As a Unix programmer, who just finished reading Eric Raymond, "The Art
of Unix Programming," I agree that we should conform to standards, for
technical issues. But for the name of a location, it is certainly not
technical issue. I'll try to be neutral in this post, even I come from
Taiwan.

Taiwan is not a member of ISO; this is not because we don't want to
participate, it's because strong political pressure from China. So we
don't have a chance to speak up in the *international*
organization. That's why we ask Debian to reconsider the decision to
conform to the ISO-3166 standard.

People in China don't like to call Taiwan a country. Especially, when
they confront with this issue, they tend to be irrational.

People in Taiwan don't like to be called "province of China" because
it's not the fact. Of course, we don't want to irritate people in
China. So we accept to be called "Taiwan," a more neutral name.

I suggest that we use "Choose country/location/area" on the menu, and
provide an item "Taiwan." In this way, people can freely read in any
combination of "country/location/area" and "Taiwan." It's more
flexible and neutral. We don't want to fight against anybody in the
open source community; we just want to be respected. Any decision made
by Debian should be respected, but we also should speak up for us if
we have chance.

Error when installing kernel

2004-04-06 Thread Mike Chandler
/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: /dev/fd does not exist, mkinitrd failed

I got this error after compiling and then trying to install a new kernel
(2.6.4) on a working Debian Sid system.
I had previously (and successfully) done this.
Now I cannot boot, and trying to install ANY kernel, results in the same error
message.

I would really appreciate some pointers.
Thank you.

As Joey pointed out, the language used is usually orthogonal to whether
a name is acceptable to the country or not (and the former can be
catered to by existing i18n mechanisms).

I suppose it's more accurate to say that the names used for most
countries are those that are at least _acceptable_ by the country's
people.

[Actually given the comma-prefix notation, it would be quite reasonable
to use "Germany, Federal Republic of" -- indeed it fits well -- but I'd
guess most germans probably don't care a great deal one way or another.]

Which is no doubt why the Germans, being reasonable people, are willing to

No, it's not, actually. Holland is only part of the Netherlands.
well, yes. but: in slovakia the name for the country is holandsko
(slovak spelling for holland). maybe it insults some people in
netherlands but that's how it is. so for me it makes perfect sense to
call that country holland, I didn't even knew it's called netherlands
until I learned english...

I am sure that is not the only example where the name of the country
is confused or country has completely different names in different

so it makes sense to stick with _some_ standard. adjusting the names
based on personal preference of one or another person (or group of
people) doesn't make much sense - you're getting into issues that cannot
be satisfactorily resolved.

Nothing. I consider it most appropriate if we use the name for any

so you're going to call germany deutschland? etc. that could make the

Bug#242495: Partial success with install on MegaRAID SCSI disks in i386

Install boot loader:[E]
Save install-report:[E]
Reboot: [E]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it
Comments/Problems:

First comment: The new installer is a BIG improvement!

I started the installer with loadlin from a DOS partition containing
multiple "sarge-i386-businesscard.iso" files, from multiple dates/sites,
kernels and initial ramdisks. When looking for the .iso's the installer
couldn't find it at first, because is was not in the root-directory of
any drive, which I beleive it should be. I then let it search all
drives/partitions. Because it would take a while, I went away, expecting
to be given the choice between all iso's found when the search had
finished. When I returned however the installer had already tried to
configure the network with DHCP, and asked me whether to retry, or
manually configure the network. So I don't know which iso it used, if any.
After configuring the network everything went smooth up until the point
at which I needed to specify the grub-boot device. I am not familiar
with grub, so I entered (hd3) to have it install the MBR on the SCSI
disk sda, assuming hd1 was the first IDE disk, hd2 en second, and hd3
the SCSI disk. I was meaning to disconnect the power to the IDE disks to
test whether it would boot from /dev/sda(2). Installing Grub gave a
fatal error: no such disk and I was shown the main-menu. I then retried
installing grub assuming it would re-ask me on which device. It didn't
however, and retried installing on (hd3).
Because I saw no way out it this I tried installing Lilo, but this
wouldn't let me enter any information, and completed the step without
any messages, but it seemed to do nothing.
I then tried saving the configuration/installation information to a
floppy-disk, but this failed without writing to the floppy, and without
any messages. In the third (or was if fourth?) console I could see the
'floppy' module couldn't be found.
I then tried rebooting. The mbr on the first IDE disk was untouched,
because the machine booted as before the test-install. I tried using the
installation kernel and the installation ramdisk, but no SCSI disks
where detected because this kernel doesn't contain the 'megaraid' driver.
To see if a boot-block (grub or lilo) had been installed on the SCSI
disk I tried:
- booting with the IDE harddisks deleted from the BIOS.
- booting with the BIOS harddisk-bootorder changed to SCSI-IDE instead
of IDE-SCSI
- booting with the power connectors pulled from the IDE disks.
- booting with the power connectors pulled from all IDE devices.
All to no avail: the machine would not boot, and not give any messages
apart from the machine's BIOS startup-display.

After restarting the installation I could recover from this situation
using the second virtual console with the following steps:
- manually loading modules for MegaRaid and SCSI disks (megaraid,
scsi-mod and sd-mod).
- mount /target and /target/boot.
- manually loading modules for IDE-disks (ide-disk(?), ide-core(?) and
ide-detect).
- mount the partition with loadlin on it on /mnt
- copy kernel and initrd from /target/boot to directory on /mnt.
- restart computer, and start loadlin with installed kernel and initrd.
This way I verified that had the kernel and initrd been available on
/dev/sda I would have been able to continue the installation as I now
did via these steps.

So the problems to be fixed are:
1) If installing Grub fails, re-ask the "Which boot device to install
the MBR on?" question so the user can correct any errors he/she made.
2) Have the lilo-install ask some questions to determine the
configuration needed.
3) Don't silently fail on the lilo-installation.

Comments/Problems:

- Overall the install was smooth. I have installed Debian on a few

- When installing the base system one should be able to back, not only
to go forward or quit. First the network did not work due to firewall
settings, and this caused problems. (I did not configure the network
at the initial install.) Maybe you should also be informed that you can
use the escape to another shell with during the base-config
script run.

- Confusing menus for partitioning the HDD until I found out how it
worked.

- When replacing OSS audio modules with ALSA the old ones are still
loaded on subsequent boots, causing conflicts. Recently I found out
that the cause is the discover package. One should perhaps be informed
in some way (maybe during base-install) that in order to avoid loading
modules found at install time, you should edit the /etc/discover
file. This is a third way to load modules, in addition to the
/etc/modules and /etc/modules.conf files and was new for me.

Install logs and other status info is available in
/var/log/debian-installer/.

Agreed. As anyone _can_ change any code in Debian, _we_ should stick
as a default to the names that the people who it applies to like, and
not to names who others have fixed on them.

English string in partman-target

2004-04-06 Thread Konstantinos Margaritis
Hi,
I'm not sure about the correctness of the following string in
partman-target:
"Partitioning a hard drive consists of logically dividing it to create
the space needed to install your new Debian system. You need to
choose which partition(s) will be used for the installation of
Debian."

I'm talking about the use of "consists of", shouldn't it be something
like:
"Partitioning a hard drive implies logically dividing it ..."

or

"Partitioning a hard drive means logically dividing it..."

or even

"Partitioning a hard drive is the process of dividing it logically to
create..."

I am not a native english speaker, but somehow the use of "consists
of" does not really feel proper here...

Anyway, just a thought...

Konstantinos

Nothing. I consider it most appropriate if we use the name for any
country in the way the people itself prefer to call it (except of
course, if the name would be non-unique).

Well, but we even don't name other countries like they call themself -
but rather they are normally called within that country. (Well, at
least I hope that we don't have "Federal Republic of Germany" in the
installer list ;)

Sugested string change in s390/netdevice

2004-04-06 Thread Eddy Petrisor
Hello Bastian,

I am Eddy Petrisor, translator for Romaian language.

I have come across the following string in s390/netdevice:

[...] This parameter is required
for cards with microcode level 2.10 or later or when you want to share a
card.

I asked on irc (i'm a newbie with svn and the d-i tree) and (as the
changelog sugests) you are the person to talk to.

I feel that the string above would sound a lot better if is refrased
like :

This parameter is required when you want to share a
card or for cards with microcode level 2.10 or later.

What bothers me is the "or or" sequence...Moreover, if left on the
current form, the Romaian translation sounds bad, also, while the
inversed version doesn't.

I know we are in a string freeze, but can you change this?

Eddy

Comments/Problems:

All in all in worked very well. It even detecked that integraded network card
(of which I thought it would need a kernel patch to get it working).

I tried the automatic partitioning, with a seperate /home partition, worked
good, however sometimes I need quite some memory, so the ~500M swap partition
was to small. When I tried to make one partition smaller, I got a little bit
confused, that the installer created the the filesystems at once, at not after
I finished with my enlarged swap partition.

Well, and since I was in this menu, I tried xfs filesystems. I got the warning
that grub might get confused, since I later wanted to install lilo, I ignored
that warning. When the installer tried to install grub, it took quite some
time... after I didn't saw any activitie for 10 minutes and the progess bar
didn't advanced a single pixl, I rebootedand used used ext3 which worked
without any problems.

Keep up the good work,
  Alexander

I don't know why I get so much connection breaks (only) during system base

debian installation on powerpc machines is yaboot (boot loader). It never works. I
have always to download the original binaries and install them so it works fine.

I congratulate all the members of the Debian Installer developer team, because they
have gotten a great installer, very

Bug#228960: install: kernel-parameter noapic fixes prob

2004-04-06 Thread Matt Yates
Hi,

I tried installing using Beta3 on a Dell Inspiron 8000 and it freezes at
95% with the "ide-floppy" error described previously. I just tried
using the "noapic" parameter and it does NOT fix the problem. It still
freezes at 95% on detecting hardware while displaying the message
"skipping unavailable module ide-floppy...".

If anyone has a work around for this, please let me know.

-Matt

What version of fwbuider do you use? I have 1.0.0-2, and I can't find
any DNS no, wait! dns tcp, right? what if I leave firewall:source
dest:any port:any accept , and the next, src:any dest:fw port:any deny?

It's even quite obvious when you pick the right examples.

Furthermore, doesn't Hong Kong use Traditional Chinese? In this case,
the issue of writing style is rather independent of the status of
Taiwan.

I think that this is already fixed, the current translation is
"Lopeta osioiden teko ja talleta muutokset levylle"

Thank you for tracking this down. This will be fixed by making the next
version of base-config more robust.

Bug#242417: debian-installer installation report

2004-04-06 Thread Ylä-Anttila Tuukka Salu Santeri

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: 4.4.2004
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/i386/beta3/sarge-i386-netinst.iso
uname -a: No shell prompt... (installation failed)
Date: 6.4.2004 18:30
Method: CD install, booted off the CD

Machine: ICL MikroMikko ErgoPro desktop machine
Processor: Intel Pentium MMX 200MHz
Memory: 32MB SIMM
Root Device: Seagate (Medalist?) 2GB IDE hard disk
Root Size/partition table: Nothing yet
Output of lspci: No installation yet

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[X]
Configure network HW: [X]
Config network: [X]
Detect CD: [E]
Load installer modules: [ ]
Detect hard drives: [ ]
Partition hard drives: [ ]
Create file systems:[ ]
Mount partitions: [ ]
Install base system:[ ]
Install boot loader:[ ]
Reboot: [ ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

The system booted off the CD fine and the installer started, but the installer can't
mount the CD. It tries to mount it (the cdrom drive is active, LED blinking) but just
says "Failed to find and mount a Debian CD-ROM". When trying to mount it manually from
a console, I get this:

~ # mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /cdrom
mount: /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: Mounting /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 on /cdrom failed: Not a directory

Also, I get the following error messages (multiple times) to the console on alt-f4:

Apr 6 19:01:00 (none) syslog.warn klogd: hdc: tray open
Apr 6 19:01:00 (none) syslog.warn klogd: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc),

Apr 6 19:01:06 (none) syslog.warn klogd: ISOFS: unable to read i-node block

There's nothing wrong with the CD medium (I just burned it and the system booted off
it just fine). I don't know the brand of the CD-ROM drive, but I can open the
machine's case and check it out if you're interested... If you want to know more, get
back to me.

I was impressed by the reported W2K3 wording, which is apparently

debootstrap installs delo (the DECstation boot loader) on all mipsel
systems, even though only DECstations need it. I seem to recall a

Hello. I have just the same problem - can't install debian on sun blade 2000.
But in my case I can not do it with any image that I have found. All that I

Gerald probably you can try the
http://www.phunnypharm.org/pub/for/sparc-folks/disks-sparc/current/sparc64/tftpboot.img
image since it doesn't attempting to kill init. May be you will have more luck

I have no experience in debugging this kind of problems. I might be
able to give more data, if I'm told how to get them.

BTW: I have just installed the box with the woody 3.0r2 installer, this
works fine.

Thanks for working on the Debian installer!

netboot image - sarge - sparc64

2004-04-06 Thread Gerald Leier
hi folks,

i had no luck in booting usparcII systems (e250,e450,small sparc station)
with the provided boot.img. the kernel quits booting with the message:

the bootimage is:
http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-sparc/current/images/sparc64/netboot/boot.img

here is some snipplets from the cosnole output:

Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Unimplemented SPARC system call 188
Unimplemented SPARC system call 188
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

well. the woody netboot just works fine...upgrading to sarge leads to a
halfusable system when rebooted (root fs ro mounted, some daemons not starting)
but thats all easy to fix. so thats the (icky) way i install sarge on sparcs now.

what do i have to change on the boot.img to get sarge up and running
from the start ?

thanks for any hints
 gerald

Uh, this bug doesn't appear to actually be fixed by the upload which was
done. Somehow this bug got merged with a bug about ignoring the
disable/enable stuff. This bug was about discover hanging when trying
to close the serial port and nothing in the changelog that was uploaded
indicates that's been fixed.

This bug should probably be reopened/unmerged from the disable/enable
issues.

Comments/Problems:

My installation problems exist only in the finnish language translation
of the installation CD. The US English installation went just fine.
First the in the manual partitioning section of the installer
"Finish partitioning and write changes to disk" is translated
"Keskeytä osioiden teko (älä tallenna muutoksia)"
which means "Interrupt partitioning (don't save changes)" .
It should be translated as
"Lopeta osioiden muokkaus ja tallenna muutokset".
Secondly the configuration of apt does not work.
The reason is that the name of the entry in the installation menu is
"Tee apt:n asetukset". Because in the menu-mapping file the display text
and the corresponding configuration script file are separated with
":", the script file name does not get recognized correctly.
solution:
change "Tee apt:n asetukset" to "Tee apt asetukset" in files:
config.dat
menu-mapping
After the corrections my installation was succesfull.

Great work, besides these small bugs the the beta3 installer
is a great improvement :).

Looks to me like they use ISO only for the _codes_ (two/three letters), I have
not been able to find a reference that explains what they base the
_descriptions_ for the codes on (very smart guys & gals :-).
(Except for the description of their decision making process, which looks
quite sane to me.)

Hmm, Anton, only Ancient Egyptian falls into the 2nd category..:-)

I guess you wanted to mention ideograms alphabet, so Japanese,
Traditional and Simplified Chinese and Korean

After reading Tomohiro Kubota contribution document to i18n, which
every i18n contributor should have read once, I feel that Thai
probably falls better in the 2nd category.

No, because about 30 translators already translated the above which was
changed several days ago...:-)

And also, because there will certainly be argument that "THIS" is not

[l10n] New partman strings in Debian Installer

2004-04-06 Thread Christian Perrier
Anton commited a lot of changes to several partman packages.

This induces lots of new strings and some changes to existing
strings

One major change was the addition of a quite verbose help screen as
well as several informative screens or progress bars...

Translators may start to work on these BUT be aware that they are
likely to be changed, because English needs polishing probably.

Joey, or others native speakers, could you please review these as soon
as possible, for giving translators some time to go back to 100%?

IMO, this is really not about taking sides, and I think it's not about
bowdlerization either. It's about providing a list of countries
(technically speaking, localities on the country level that officially
have distinct names) for the user to choose his own one. It helps neither
the Chinese nor the Taiwanese in any way we should care about to call
Taiwan "Taiwan, Province of China" in that list, it just makes the name
longer and bulkier.

It's not as if human users needed an accurate transcription of the ISO
country names list.

Package: discover
Version: 1.5-1.4.1
Severity: important

On this machine discover pauses for 30 seconds in serial port
detection (according to strace, /dev/ttyS1, may be the infrared
port) before timing out. This despite the lines in /etc/discover.conf

:; grep serial /etc/discover.conf
# The parallel and serial scans cause problems on some machines too:
disable parallel,serial

(which are unchanged from the default configuration). As far as I
can tell from strace, discover completely ignores the presence
of that file - despite the manual page

This is marked 'important' because it causes discover not to finish
installation on this machine.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-12
Severity: normal

[Note that as I mention below, re-running the upgrade (after killing
discover the first time) succeeds.]

Doing an apt-get upgrade (of -11 to -12.1):

Preparing to replace xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-11 (using
.../xserver-xfree86_4.2.1-12.1_i386.deb) ...

It hung here. pstree -pl shows:

|
|-sshd(21018)---bash(21019)---apt-get(21059)---dpkg(26667)---frontend(27104)---config(27110)---config(27121)---config(27125)---discover(27126)

strace on the discover process shows:

maneki-neko$ sudo strace -p 27126
Process 27126 attached - interrupt to quit
read(4,
Process 27126 detached

lsof on that process then shows:

COMMANDPID USER FD TYPE DEVICESIZE NODE NAME
discover 27126 root cwdDIR3,340962 /
discover 27126 root rtdDIR3,340962 /
discover 27126 root txtREG3,3 10556 503997 /sbin/discover
discover 27126 root memREG3,3 92174 227681 /lib/ld-2.3.2.so

discover 27126 root1w FIFO0,5 12385817 pipe
discover 27126 root2u CHR 136,13 /dev/pts/1
discover 27126 root3w FIFO0,5 12385809 pipe
discover 27126 root4u CHR 4,65 1122678 /dev/ttyS1

ie. it is hanging trying to read from ttyS1. This isn't symlinked
from anything in /dev, nor do I see it in any relevant config files in
/etc or /etc/X11 (it is in /etc/efax.rc, but it would surprise me if
that mattered.)

Re-running the upgrade (after killing discover out from under it,
causing that part of the upgrade to fail) did end up running to
completion, so that may make this hard to diagnose.
