I've been hit by the same problem which kills my fully automated installs of desktop systems, at this moment. I guess that release managers are aware of this. Add lspci to the list of binaries installed by d-i?
> > Output of lspci and lspci -n:? > > Run lspci and lspci -n at the command line. We need this information to > deal with hardware detection problems. Debian Installer testers answers to this are very often that lspci is not available if they switch to vt2 during the install. Then our answer is recommending them to boot with something else, like Knoppix LiveCD. I'm wondering whether it could be possible to add /usr/bin/lspci as soon as possible in the installation process. That binary is part of the pciutils package. This is why I CC this mail to the package maintainer. That would probably require the pciutils source package to build a udeb package with only /usr/bin/lspci in it. There may be other arguments against this, but imho, this needs to be discussed...unless it has already been discussed and I'm not knowing..:-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Playing around with debconf/framebuffer=false or adding > > LANG or LOCALE=C to the boot arguments didn't appear to make any > > difference unfortunately. > > IIRC this is fixed in the new localechooser. Currect, Bubulle? Yes. Localechooser adds an extra field in the languagelist which will have 0 or 1 as value. When, for whatever reason, framebuffer is disabled, only languages withthe 1 value are displayed. This is not automated : we will have to decide, for each language, chether it is displayed or not. The key will be : only display languages which can be displayed with the Altin-1 charset. So, basically, fixing this is post-sarge as localechooser is not ready for being included in the release (not enough testing). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#283193: disk-detect udeb needed
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal Tags: d-i Experience shows that we need a udeb that uses discover/whatever to find disk drives, then checks to make sure a disk was found, and if not, lets the user choose a module from a list of disk drivers, as in ethdetect. Since we don't have this, currently when the installer fails to find a disk, the user is stuck in partman, unless they know how to modprobe modules in the shell. Dealing with NFS mounting should be taken into account when designing this (assuming the rest of the installer will eventually support NFS root). This is, unfortunatly, a post-sarge issue. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#283184: debian-installer: Lilo fails when configuring LVM over raid during installation
Package: debian-installer Severity: important This is an older Dell Dimension desktop with Bios version A05 and a PIII-450. I am using the Sarge RC2 net-installer. Using the expert26 install, attempting to use LVM on top of raid-1. Install raid-1 across two IDE hard drives, raid device md0, configured as two physical raid partitions of 6GB each (hda1 and hdb1). info: /bin/report-hw: discover: ;;;Unknown;Maxtor 90650U2;/dev/hda (6GB - ide1 master) info: /bin/report-hw: discover: ;;;Unknown;WDC WD84AA;/dev/hdb (8GB - ide1 slave) Make md0 an lvm partition, configure volume group vg00 and four logical volumes: info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-root_lv 575813 64563480530 12% /target info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-home_lv 1965459 8239 1852363 0% /target/home info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-usr_lv 1965459 82778 1777824 4% /target/usr info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-var_lv 1074853 48619968890 5% /target/var Write changes. Error on console #4: "grub-installer: /boot is a lvm partition (dev/mapper/vg00-root_lv), cannot install grub". Lilo is given as an option in the installer menu. I choose to install to the MBR of /dev/md0, this pops up a nag box saying the partition is not marked active ("/dev/md/0 doesn't contain a valid partition table"). If I mark it active, lilo-installer fails with: sfdisk: ERROR: sector 0 does not have an msdos signature /dev/md/0 unrecognized partition sfdisk: 0 no such partition Not marking the partition as active makes the lilo-installer fail with an "error code 1" So I can't get a boot-loader onto this system. (Note that if I create another raid-1 container just for /boot, and leave /root and the others configured as LVM partitions on a separate raid container, the install works great, using grub this time). Here are detailed logs after each choice offered by the installer. The "select language" items were still present in the d-i menu but ineffective since I was in low memory mode. I then proceeded to install drivers from the net-drivers floppy but d-i hadn't ejected the root floppy and floppy drives on Macs don't have an eject button. I had to eject the disk forcibly using a pin and the "rescue eject" function. The woody installer used to eject the root floppy as soon as it had finished loading the system, I think that would be nice in d-i too. My network card, a ne2k-pci card, was detected and DHCP worked fine. I selected as few installer modules as possible, everything worked okay. The hardware detection was somewhat faulty, it wanted to load drivers for a dozen of IDE chipsets. I unselected them all from the list of drivers to load and loaded the floppy and ide-disk modules only, the hard drive was detected fine. Partitioning was _very_ slow: there was a ~10 second delay between each screen, even more when it needed to perform operations on disk. I didn't see any obvious reason for the slowdown in the logs or in a shell. The rest of the installation was fine until the very end. I tried to select a 2.6.8 kernel from the list of available kernels but installation failed, in the log console I saw that it aborted because preinst (or postinst, I don't know) was asking for confirmation about the initrd. Retrying with 2.4.27 worked fine, apparently because d-i set do_initrd in kernel-img.conf for this image and not for the 2.6 one (?). The most difficult part of the install was installing a bootloader. Installing Quik from the d-i menu failed every time, so I googled a bit for the solution. I will repeat the exact steps I followed since it might be useful to someone else with a Power Mac 6500: 1. Create /dev/nvram with mknod /dev/nvram c 10 144 2. Use /target/sbin/nvsetenv to change OpenFirmware values like this: # /target/sbin/nvsetenv boot-device ata/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:2 ^^^ 2 if the root device is /dev/hda2, 3 for hda3, etc # /target/sbin/nvsetenv input-device kbd # /target/sbin/nvsetenv output-device /bandit/ATY,264GT-B 3. Check that /target/etc/quik.conf exists and looks okay (with nano) 4. Install quik from the shell: # /target/sbin/quik -v -r /target Then proceed with the installation. Using "install a bootloader" at least once is important, quik.conf doesn't get created otherwise. I finished the installation and rebooted without problems. The end of the configuration detected a CD in my drive and automatically used it to setup sources.list, replacing my http entries. The CD was an old woody ppc CD, it would have been nice for the installer to detect this and not try to use it to install packages. I fixed sources.list myself in another terminal before proceeding with the actual install. After the installation I upgraded Quik with the a new version (see http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/11/msg00856.html> and installed the 2.6.8 kernel image from sarge for powerpc, which installed and booted fine with an

Bug#283095: debian-installer: want to use preexisting partitions without data loss
Quoting Geert Stappers ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > > a well visible option to mount existing partitions without having them > > reformatted would be nice. If memory servers there was such an option in > > the > > old installer. > > The E-mail from Christian Perrier does explain how it can be done. I have to mention that I hesitated some time before closing the bug. Friedemann took care of reporting the issue so I didn't want to sound rude though I indeed think that the issue may be more minor than Friedemann imagined. In my opinion, users who may want to re-use existing partition are most often clever enough for finding a way to do what they want. However, we can imagine that choosing the "Use existing free space" choice in partman-auto could trigger the choice of re-using one of the existing partitions. There may be something to dig here...post-sarge..:-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If not, do you want a full bugreport?). "partition type 8e" is a partition type specific to DOS partition tables (possibly supported by GPT now as well, I don't know how many of the identifiers GPT inherits from DOS). There is no corresponding partition identifier for BSD disklabels; I have no idea what it would take to be able to standardize these things for Linux use on BSD disklabels, but there's apparently not enough interest in alpha anymore for this to have been started from the kernel end. A bug report (probably against package: kernel) shouldn't hurt. > But if you feel that "multi-user workstation" is useless and not going to be > fixed, why not remove it completely? Well, mine is just one opinion; I guess some people find it useful on other archs, so I can't argue that it should be removed altogether -- and removing it from just one architecture isn't possible either, the recipe can only be overridden, not removed. > > Joey, can this be added to the RC2 errata for alpha if it isn't there > > already? > Where would I find this arc-specific errata? Bug#283149: Obfuscated Argentinian Timezones
Package: base-config Serverity: normal Hi! I've seen this bug for a while now. Sorry for not reporting it earlier. When prompted to select the timezone, at second stage of the installer, if you have chosen "Argentina" as the country, you get a dialog that is too big to fit on screen, but can be corrected to show up correctly: The timezones are shown with the names of the most important Argentinian cities, followed by a series of 2 initials, like TF, RT, VB, etc. This initials don't really mean anything to Argentinian people (we don't refer to our cities by their initials), and are the cause of the screen getting too wide. If just the names of the cities could be shown, it could be much better. This information is located in /usr/share/zoneinfo/zone.tab, and I'm referring mainly to the "TZ" and "comments" column. I think it would be better if just the "TZ" information was shown, without the comments. -- Bessos,(o_ Marga. (\)_ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I was with Noodles, testing the netboot installer on his laptop. We wanted to try something fancy, so we installed in a certain partition he had free, formatting it in XFS. The idea was not to touch the rest of the installation that he had in his notebook. So, we did format in xfs, thinking of booting with lilo instead of grub. Now, I think I already said this, but since grub does not work with XFS in /, it would be nice if the installer would NOT try to install grub in /, and switch automatically to lilo. Or at least, switch automatically to the main menu. Anyway, that's not the bug. The bug is that when installed in the partition (instead of the drive's MBR) lilo does not work with XFS either, it fails because it would break the file system. Apparently, XFS does not leave space for lilo to be installed at the beginning of the partition. Actually, it didn't even fail. It stalled, and we had to go to the console, kill the present lilo, do it by hand, and that's how we saw the error message. So, uhm, I see no solution here except for not letting the user do this. Or at least, failing instead of stalling, so that the user can go back and decide what to do. -- Love, Marga. --- Received: (at 251944-done) by bugs.debian.org; 26 Nov 2004 19:46:21 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Nov 26 11:46:21 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from (erwin.amadeus) [200.115.206.87] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1CXm2u-0001v4-00; Fri, 26 Nov 2004 11:46:21 -0800 Received: from ulises.amadeus ([192.168.21.15] helo=ulises.home ident=mail) by erwin.amadeus with esmtp (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 1CXm2u-0005ru-00 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Fri, 26 Nov 2004 16:46:20 -0300 Received: from marga by ulises.home with local (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 1CXm2m-0006E9-00 for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Fri, 26 Nov 2004 16:46:12 -0300 Date: Fri, 26 Nov 2004 16:46:12 -0300 From: Margarita Manterola <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: LILO+XFS new behaviour Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6+20040722i Sender: Margarita Manterola <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: I've just tried installing Debian with RC2 into an XFS partition. Bug#283136: debian-installer-manual: creating USB-stick Debian-installer under Windows
Package: debian-installer-manual Severity: normal Section 4.4 of the manual states: "For preparing the USB stick you will need a system where GNU/Linux is already running and where USB is supported", whereas in fact it's also possible under Windows. Here is how to do it: 1. get "dd for Windows" from http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm 2. download the boot.img.gz (use WinZip to decompress) and the sarge-i386-netinst.iso 3. start Windows commandline, find out the device name with: dd --list 4. write boot.img to USB-stick, for example if your stick is "e:": dd if=boot.img of=\\.\e: bs=1M 5. copy sarge-i386-netinst.iso to stick 6. reboot and install Debian :) Cheers, Heike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#283137: Problem when booting from second CD
Package: installation-reports Severity: minor This report was done with RC2 CDs, downloaded via bittorrent Known by my will to do weird things, this time I tried booting from the second CD, instead of the first. It listed only "linux" and "expert" as booting methods, so I chose "linux" But I couldn't get really far, because quite early in the installation (just after reading the CD's data), it stated that the CD didn't contain the correct kernel modules (there was a "mismatch" between the modules and the kernel version), and took me back to the menu. There's no option (or at least I could find no option) allowing me to umount the CD and put the right one in, so I had to reboot to do a successful installation, booting from the first CD. I don't know whose fault it is, hence I'm filing it to Installation-Reports. -- Love, (o. Marga. (/)_ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Successful Installation Report - RC2
Since this is a Successful installation report, I'm not filing it as a bug. I've just installed RC2 in a Sempron machine, that had WinXP installed in it. I booted with linux26, resized the NTFS partition with partman (this is kind of a hidden feature, isn't it? :), from 40GB to 10GB, and finished the installation normally. Then rebooted into the other operating system, that decided to do a CHKDSK, and everything was fine. Then it rebooted the system. I chose WinXP again, it booted fine, and after a minute or so, said that it had finished detecting the new hardware (?) and that it needed to reboot again. After that, it worked fine. In conclusion, NTFS resizing works smoothly, even if it needs 2 reboot for WinXP to work. This was awesome. I'm now deleting it, obviously :). I uploaded today a new release of the shadow package which includes new translations of the debconf templates to Hindi, Malagasy and Albanian. This upload should improve slightly d-i level2 statistics and make Albianian closer to 100%. Hindi and Malagasy translators have just benefit this opportunity for having their work in...but as these languages will not supported in the next release, these translations are not counted in d-i statistics. -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". If there is a special patch needed for the kernel, please inform us about it, and let's try to get it in the official kernels. Can you try booting the plain 2.4.27 and 2.6.8 debian official kernels (the latest needs some mkvmlinuz invocation before it is usefull to you). That said, there where a bunch of prep patches which got into the 2.6.8 kernel, so it may be that it will work already. Once we have a working kernel, we can go ahead and see if we can produce a prep floppy set, but first we need a working kernel. Also, did you try the netboot method with either : http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/netboot/vmlinuz-prep.initrd (i guess your box uses the prep boot, and not ppcbug), or : http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/netboot/2.4/vmlinuz-prep.initrd the initrd size may be too big for your prep OF, and you may want to try : http://people.debian.org/~luther/d-i/images/daily/powerpc/netboot-minimal/2.4/vmlinuz-prep.initrd Altough i believe that it doesn't contain yet the needed prep modules and such, since it was hand-crafter for pegasos1, but i know there is also a initrd size limit on some prep systems, which make the above system a good guess. > using the old Debian installation system). Notice that d-i doesn't know about the prep boot partition yet, so you woukd have to use manual intervention anyway. two things are needed, i believe, a partman-prep, based on the partman-alto .udeb, and a way to install the kernel, which probably means a new prep-installer .udeb package. You are the best candidate to implement this, since you have access to the hardware, and an interest ti make it happen. Bug#283104: Installation report on debian-installer

I use the following boot parameters: console=ttyS0,9600 load_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=32768 root=/dev/fd0 debconf/priority=medium This starts up OK and gets me into the installer menu; I can then configure country, language and keyboard OK, and opt to load drivers from the net-drivers.img disk. This also works, although it generates an error complaining about not being able to load kernel modules (because I'm using my own kernel); it nevertheless loads the next debian-installer components OK. I can then follow through the installation, configuring my hardware and specifying to use the ftp.uk.linux.org mirror (I've also tried it manually specifying a mirror at www.mirroservice.org), partitioning disks, etc., and installing the base system. The 'install the base system' part works fine until it reaches the point at which it tries to install a kernel. This fails, presumably because I'm using my own kernel. The trouble is, I can't progress the installation any further at this point - if I try to select any other option from the main menu, it just tries to re-run the 'install base system' part again. There seems to be no way out, and I'm left with an unbootable system. Since I can't use one of the standard kernels on my system anyway, would it be possible to have the 'install kernel' menu offer an option to 'not install a kernel and skip this step' - I could then finish off the installation and manually put in a kernel from floppy via the command line later on. Weird hardware like this is never going to be straightforward, but at least with the old install system I could get it working reasonably easily! ;-) Let me know if you want the .config file for my custom kernel or the contents of /var/log/messages from the broken install... Bug#283095: debian-installer: want to use preexisting partitions without data loss
Package: debian-installer Severity: important Hi! I installed two machines recently and wasn't able to find a way to reuse some linux partitions that existed from an earlier linux installation on the same harddisk. This wasn't very problematic for me, but I guess those who don't know linux good will have problems to find a solution for this. Everything else went smoothly with the two athlon machines I used the installer on during the last week. Best regards (and thanks fro your great work!) Installation success on ThinkPad 600X
Last night I burned rc2 to a CD, planning to do a test install this weekend. This morning I did something dumb to my /etc/fstab rendering my system unbootable so I did the install today instead. No problem at all installing to the spare partition (hda7) of my ThinkPad 600X laptop from CD with network connection via Aironet 352 Wi-Fi card on a home WLAN with a DHCP server. :) Kudos! -- Thomas Hood -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Actually I found the recipe quite usefull, especially because I intended to split the rather large home partition later, using LVM. I would have loved to set up the home partition as a PV, but it seems that partman doesn't know anything about partition type 8e (Linux LVM) on bds disklables (is this a known bug, too?. If not, do you want a full bugreport?). But if you feel that "multi-user workstation" is useless and not going to be fixed, why not remove it completely? > Joey, can this be added to the RC2 errata for alpha if it isn't there already? During the package selection process, I chose File Server and also Manual Select (or whatever it is), which threw me into aptitude, which I have not used (I have been using dselect). So it was an 'unplanned surprise', and I had to carefully learn aptitude on-the-fly without messing up the last part of the install. Perhaps a user-choice here between manual using dselect or manual using aptitude, because this is the last part of the install and it would be sad to mess it up just because of not being familiar with aptitude. Anyway, it seems to have installed well for me, and must therefore be donkey-proof. 2. I originally chose 'manual' to unselect the exim package, as I don't need a mail-server, and could not find it in aptitude to unselect, so it probably installed it anyway. The base system configuration menu asked me to configure the MTA. I just chose 'no configure at this time', then later uninstalled exim4 with dselect. Perhaps a specific user choice as to whether a mail service is required. 3. I saw some hda IDE0 timeout/crc errors during boot when reiserfs was playing the transaction log, but this could be my hardware, which is very old. They dissappeared when I turned off the cpu overclocking in the BIOS. Looks like 2.6.8.1 might not like overclocking. 2.4.18-bf2.4 didnt mind it. 4. I though it odd that appletalk is installed by default as I have never used it myself. I killed it and its modules with dselect. Perhaps a user-choice if the user selects fileserver in tasksel? 5. It went very smoothly for me. The Debian U.S. mirror was down, and, for a while, it looked like an installer script had hung. I ctrl-C'd out, changed to the kernel.org mirror, and went along without problems. Perhaps a timeout to tell user that the mirror, not the installed, is dead. Perhaps a sig trap for people like me who Ctrl-C out of a script to see if the mirror had been contacted at all, and, if not, to ask for another mirror. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
