Re: release update and branching
Quoting Sven Luther ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Joeyh, do you seriously think we can release this year yet (as in the next 4 weeks) ? I don't think there is time for this even if t-p-u was fixed today. I I'm sure Joey thinks we can release this year, yes. So do I. By release and we, I think both Joey and I (and I suspect many others) mostly think about Debian Installer release. The no-name-yet thing which is supposed to follow RC2. The priority at the moment is releasing a version of Debian Installer that can be considered and called stable. Such release will be the basis of the general sarge release. That release will not be perfect. I'm afraid an installer will never be perfect. We need to say other parts of Debian : hey, d-i team gives you that thing we call a release...please use it for releasing sarge. We are nearly about doing this with RC2. But, for a few details (one major being that all images are currently called Release Candidate not Release), RC2 probably cannot be the thing which will ship on Debian sarge official images. If it was needed, we could indeedbut probably only if we cannot do something else (ie if we are the only blocker). I'm not completely sure about how Joey plans to handle this but my understanding is that a build is again to be made with indeed very few changes from RC2. That build can happen in the very next weeksprovided we do not make absolutely necessary changes. Or maybe we will decide to just call RC2 The Release and voilà. Once that build is made and we (d-i team) announce Debian Installer Release, then our job regarding sarge release is mostly over. *then*, we will be free to release the changes policy a little and probably parted changes may be a first goal. And, if the general release of Debian cannot happen immediately after our own release, we will maybe be able to have a Release 1.1 before the general release. You may be right about the small windows we had, during last year, for major potentially breaking changes. This is probably the price to pay for our limited manpower (just look over the last 18 months of debian-boot and count who has been there all the time...). Whether we accept it or not, the release process is a stressful process and, at this moment, Joey has been able to coordinate it a few times since last 18 monthsat the expense of some stress and sometimes frustration. This is mostly why I give his advice a very strong weight and I believe that optimism in our ability to release useful stuff and respect some constraints is one key of our success. I hope I bringed you another view to that general problem...and I also sincerely hope that, despite his claims, Joey will go over the angryness he seems to have towards you, Sven...as you obviously have proven to be a key contributor to this project. Indeed, I know he will and that there's no reason for a major clash... We have already gone through a few crisis or mini-crisis without breaking the very good work atmosphere of this group. Welsh automated installs do not hang anymore
By using unstable's base-config, it appears that Welsh automated installs do no hang anymore. The missing comma thus seemed to be the culprit. Which means we need 2.53.5 in testing, of course. I'll test the automated Polish installs which had a similar bug, though here no comma was missing. -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#283294: rc2 on sparc64: workaround

The bad news: daily build budinesscard ISO as of 02-DEC-2004 still is broken The good new: I found a workaround for this bug: 1. boot with 'linux debconf/priority=medium' (or low); 2. skip 'Choose language', 'Choose Country...' and 'Select a keyboard.. from the menu, proceed with 'Detect and mount CD-ROM' instead, then continue the suggested sequence of steps. Hi, just noticed, that I was wrong! The chapter in question is related the first step of installation (before reboot), so /target/boot should be correct. Sorry for bothering. I wasn't that familiar with the installation process... Greetings Holger In http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch06s03.html#nobootloader the directory /target/boot is mentioned as the place, where kernel and initrd are installed. Re: sarge installer and 3rd party modules
Hi Bart, I'm no expert but this sounds similar to the problem I had booting off a USB hard drive that I had installed to - only difference seems to be you require a custom module whereas I just needed to pick up some which were there but were not being used. Have a look at the instructions in my installation report... http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/11/msg01601.html you'd need to put your module in the target as well obviously, not sure how you'd do that. It'd be great if the installer made adding extra/custom modules easier than this... still you can't have everything I suppose ;-). geoff Bart Duchesne wrote: Hi all, I've been trying to get my system installed with the latest sarge-netinst image using a USB flashdisk. I have a supermicro system containing a marvell 4-port SATA controller, I received the driver source from supermicro compiled it for 2.6.8-1-386 and put the resulting module on the USB stick. The installer boots allows me to configure country/language/keyboard, before the install program itself starts I exit to a shell and load the mv_sata.ko driver, it loads correctly and disks are detected. I can continue to setup the system (even the RAID ; it surprised me but you guys made really a great installer). But when installing the base system, there suddendly comes an error while creating the initrd image that it cannot find the mv_sata module and the installer stops. What is the best way to include a 3rd party module that works as it should in the installer process ? regards, Bart Duchesne -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: release update and branching
On Sat, Dec 04, 2004 at 09:33:06AM +0100, Christian Perrier wrote: Quoting Sven Luther ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Joeyh, do you seriously think we can release this year yet (as in the next 4 weeks) ? I don't think there is time for this even if t-p-u was fixed today. I I'm sure Joey thinks we can release this year, yes. So do I. Well, given that Colin wearing its RM hat did propose a release schedule mentioning : N+30 days 0 RC bugs Where N is the date of the day the t-p-u problem is solved, i can assure you that there will be no debian release this year :). By release and we, I think both Joey and I (and I suspect many others) mostly think about Debian Installer release. The no-name-yet thing which is supposed to follow RC2. Well, i was clearly speaking about the debian/sarge release. The priority at the moment is releasing a version of Debian Installer that can be considered and called stable. Such release will be the basis of the general sarge release. And ? Did i not say that if another d-i build is needed, then a parted change may be worth it. Not withstanding the fact that it would not be such a big change to just upgrade parted and partman, Colin is already doing it on a branch, and the changes are rather trivial. My concern, as the parted maintainer, was more of the other packages which reverse depends on parted. That release will not be perfect. I'm afraid an installer will never be perfect. We need to say other parts of Debian : hey, d-i team gives you that thing we call a release...please use it for releasing sarge. Sure, but the main point is, will the sarge release be nextly, or some long time off ? I was told by Manoj in december 2003 that we didn't want profund changes to kernel-package, since the release was near, and see how it worked out. But i understand joeyh's position, and i also understand that he is best placed to know how the release schedule is, which is why i made that comment, not meant as a a critic of the d-i release in any way, but a simple fact of reality. If rc2 will be the final installer, then there is no chance of a parted change, but if there is going to be another build, or whatever, then we should go for it. I just wish that i didn't let me convince in august not to do the API change. Or that someone really would have stand up and helped me earlier in the parted maintenance, but nobody seems to really care. And joeyh, if i have offended you by this, i apologize, it was not my intention. We are nearly about doing this with RC2. But, for a few details (one major being that all images are currently called Release Candidate not Release), RC2 probably cannot be the thing which will ship on Debian sarge official images. Yeah, ok. lot of good points skipped ... Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#284230: megaraid2 issue
Package: debian-installer Version: testing (sarge) i386 build 1.12.2004 Hi sarge net-inst daily build from 1.12.2004: this version (as all versions before) of the new sarge installer can't be installed on a dell poweredge 2850 with megaraid2 controller. this bug was reported before from Zachary Schneider, see http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/10/msg02129.html actualy he mailed me that this issue should be fixed and because it's not, I decided to send the message again... the installer loads the megaraid2 module but after the reboot he decides to get the megaraid module instead of megaraid2, so the systems crashs with a kernel panic best regards mike müller

That's why I've been trying to test it extensively and file bugs. :) And I do appricate that. Infact, Paul Telford messages have high priority for me when I'm scanning debian-boot. The comments in the example preseed file read to me as if static addressing was tested working... if not, that's ok; it's been tested now. I'll be happy to do whatever I can to help solve the problem, though my understanding of the netcfg code is not the greatest. I'm also scared for the netcfg code :D My idea/proposal for a workaround is wget http://installserver/path/to/hostname/interfaces \ -O /etc/network/interfaces before the reboot. Package: debian-installer Severity: important ( i've runed the installer in expert mode only, ( tried expert and expert26 on both rc2 and today's snapshot )) there is a module versioning issue in 2.6 and 2.4 netboot images for x86 of the debian-installer in the rc2 release and in today's snapshot. i've detected the issue on: ide-core xfs reiserfs ext3 this doesnot allow a user to install debian on a ide hardisk. by forcing the module to modprobe ( -f ) i get the desired behavior. that's all for the bad things =) i've tested installing by a wireless network, except that bug it works as hell, thank you so much for the debian-installer. cheers. anna cant't find /cdrom/dists//Release problem
Hello Debian-Installers! I'm trying the debian installer on a (yet) unsupported platform, a Psion 5MX Pro (a 32MB ARM PDA). Unfortunately, it cannot run the stock debian kernel, but instead uses a patched 2.4.19 kernel. After adding support for loopback devices, ISO9660, devfs and tmpfs to the kernel, and using the initrd for the bast businesscard CD (downloaded today, rc2), d-i actually starts :-) ... but I don't get very far. The CD-ROM detection does not give me anything, which is slightly unexpected. I thought the installer would try to mount filesystems on block devices, and look for .iso-files. I have partitioned my CF flash card in one (small) FAT partition (for booting) and one ~120 MB ext2 partition, and the latter has sarge-arm-businesscard.iso in its root. Anyway, I then tried to mount /cdrom manually, by first mounting /dev/ide/.../part2 in /tmp/b and then mounting /cdrom using a loopback block device from /tmp/b/sarge-arm-businesscard.iso. Then the detection works, but in the next stage, I get: Debootstrap Error: Failed getting Release file /cdrom/dists//Release I guess it should be dists/sarge/Relese here. This looks like some simple error, where is the distribution selected really? Could this have something to do with my custom kernel? Bug#283377: Should not copy installer account to /target if network-console-config not installed
Before I started testing the patch I realized that I had not covered one situation: if the user decides not to install over SSH after all, the network-console-config package should be purged during prebaseconfig. In the old situation that package would not be installed, but now it will already have been installed (if available) during base-installation. I have committed an additional patch to trunk to cover this situation. I have tested the new version (including this latest patch) in 4 installs: - s390 generic over ssh (build myself to include patched network-console) - i386 netinst over ssh (network-console-config not available on CD) - i386 netinst; selected network-console, but installed from console - i386 businesscard over ssh All installs resulted in the expected actions from the installer and correct messages in logs. The first and last installs resulted in base-installation being run over SSH; the second and third from the console (as expected). I've attached the combined patch for this problem. [d-i manual] I would like to have a german version on the sarge cd
Hi everybody, I want to ask for the german manual to be included in the sarge branch/on the cd. The translation is so far finished, that only architecture-specific files are untranslated, so I think it would be a benefit for the sarge release. In the time remaining until the official release I would manage to get many (if not all) of the outstanding untranslated documents translated. Re: anna cant't find /cdrom/dists//Release problem
The 'suite' is set using the following code from the postinst from cdrom-detect. for distlink in stable testing unstable ; do relfile=/cdrom/dists/$distlink/Release if [ -e $relfile ] ; then suite=$(sed -n 's/^Suite: *//p' $relfile) log Detected CD with '$suite' distribution db_set mirror/suite $suite break fi done sometimes this fails, ie $suite never gets set, and there is no code to trap that condition. This can happen with crappy cd drives. I attempted a patch in #271976 but haven't been able to test it - I only worked out how to build mini-isos last week. register_cd() in iso-scan/debian/postinst has the same problem, but should work with an on-disk iso image. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. software raid and lvm in preseed
Where are instructions for that in preseed install? I searched email lists and installer manual but all examples found so far use physical disk as partman examples. I also tried manually install and set up software raid, but the 'debconf-get-selections --installer' output contains no valuable information of how partman setup and use md devices. If anybody has done software raid or lvm install in preseed, please give shed some lights on it. Thanks, Jin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: partman problems (sparc and elsewhere)
In article [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Choosing another menu item that fails totaly can get it back to a consistant state. Choosing a menu item that partly succeds (such as lvm) can make things even crazier. Can you give more details about this? I was able to create a volume group, but not logical volumes. When I deleted the physical volumes and created ext3 partitions, I wound up with what was showing as a bunch of physical volumes. (Maybe part of the problem was I was trying to use the entire disk as a physical volume, which overwrote the disk label.) -- Blars Blarson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.blars.org/blars.html With Microsoft, failure is not an option.
