Bug#468481: Incorrect error message when target /var partition is full

2008-02-29 Thread Olivier Guerrier
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

When/if you make a too small /var partition, d-i complains with tons of
/pool/.../blah.deb is corrupt messages, where a single disk full
message and a dialog option to go back to the main menu or partition
tools would be more usefull...

It is similar to #435769, but I think correcting the error message is a
more realist goal.

2008-02-29 Thread Frans Pop
This System has no screen and no DVD, so I think it is a good idea to
install CD #1 over a simple 9600-Modem line but the installer has to
 many screen-codes.

I have installed quite often over a serial line without real problems. It
certainly did not get progressively slower.

Did you try the network-console option? That allows to continue the
installation over SSH after the network has been set up.

Configure network: [should be auto-DHCP but no success]

Problems getting a DHCP lease have in the past always proven to be a local
network configuration issue.

If we really want an international Debian, we should take care of all
 such issues.

Well, ATM translators _are_ warned about this. For this string there is an
instruction that translations should not be longer than 65 characters.

For the short term, you should really contact the translators for your

I am part of the translation team for my language (pt), and i noticed
this issue while proof-reading the portuguese 'version' of the
installer. It was only after writing the BR that i actually found
where the strings are and noticed the warning about it's width.

Although we were able to shorten it down, i still think this matter
should be taken in consideration because limiting the width of the
translation may give rise to inferior, or even incorrect,
translations.

Thank you for any and all attention put on this matter,

Bug#468573: Default sources.list should use release names, not 'stable'

2008-02-29 Thread Andrew Moise
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20070308etch2
Severity: normal

It's almost a daily occurence on #debian for people to come in with
broken systems because the installer has given them a sources.list
with 'stable', and they've unintentionally upgraded partially to a new
release by doing a simple packaging operation. It seems that it would
be better for the installer to use explicit release names instead of
'stable'.
Of course, the fact that people are having trouble with something
doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong. Even so, I can't see the
upside of using 'stable'. An oldstable-stable upgrade is not simple
enough that it makes sense for it to happen as a natural result of
using the packaging tools as opposed to because the admin has made a
deliberate decision to upgrade.
In the case of people who simply aren't aware of the idea of
oldstable-stable upgrades, I think it makes more sense to leave their
systems as the originally-installed release indefinitely than it does
to let them partially upgrade (or do an attempt at an upgrade with
dist-upgrade). I think the chance that they'll figure out that the
apt output they're seeing means that they need to go to
www.debian.org, read the release notes, and then follow them carefully
in order to upgrade their system, is quite small.
  Cheers.

 - Copy missing code in the std library from the python-xml package.

and the solution in that case was to upgrade the system BIOS
and/or try the kernel command line arguments acpi=noirq or
   enable_8254_timer.

   -jim

Hi. Thank you for your information. I shall try it out and have you
  informed the result.

Hi. Upgrading of the BIOS did not solve the problem. However, the
installer booted well when the kernel argument acpi=noirq was
added. After the installation, it could reboot into the newly installed
system by itself without any additional configuration. Thank you for
your help.

  Cheers.

It would be nice if you'd check your facts before filing a BR.
The Debian Installer has been setting codenames in sources.list files since
Etch. Sarge was the last release where the installer used suites.

My sincerest apologies. I was led to believe that that wasn't the

Bug#468668: Unable to start d-i after running win32-loader (empty GRUB)

2008-02-29 Thread Filipus Klutiero
Package: win32-loader
Version: 0.6.3
Severity: normal

On a new laptop on which I never used win32-loader successfully before, I
succeeded to run win32-loader now that it works on Vista 64-bit (thank you),
but it failed once rebooting and trying to launch d-i. After selecting in
Windows' bootloader to run d-i, I get a GRUB 2 menu with no choices. A first
choice was selected, but there was no label and I only saw that it was
highlighted. I couldn't boot it.
I can't remember what's supposed to happen after choosing to run d-i, so I
don't know whether I should see choices or whether it's abnormal that I see
GRUB.
I don't know the actual win32-loader version I used, I'm putting 0.6.3 because
that's the current version and I downloaded debian.exe yesterday.
This only happened on 1 machine once. Sorry to have no more clues, I'd be
happy to provide you more information if you need.

Where exactly did anybody give an OK for this to be committed by you?

I would say that the comments were at most an invitation to prepare a new
patch and submit that for review again.

Another example is the commit you did to the manual. You asked for review,
but then used a minor comment from someone who's himself not actually part
of the team as a justification to commit the change. It would have been
much nicer if you'd left a bit more time for the actual maintainers of the
manual to respond (especially when you know people are away at a
conference). After you already committed I myself no longer saw any point
in commenting, so I didn't. I will now probably just rewrite the text if I
see a reason to do so.

I really totally disagree with the way you appropriate things and am even at
this point starting to consider whether your commit access to the D-I SVN
repository should just be revoked.

While I fully agree with your complains and also think that Robert

do mistakes and learn from them.

He has been very active and tries to make things go fast (as I also do

the procedure it's no longer reproducible?

Is there a c:\grub.cfg file? If so, please provide it. Also, are you using
drive encryption or any unusual filesystem feature?

If you can reproduce it, what happens if you try:

  - Press 'c' to get a rescue GRUB shell
  - Run: cat (hd0,1)/grub.cfg

does this correctly print the contents of c:\grub.cfg ?

I like the rename of the too generic 'type' to 'dmtype'.

Note that you can just commit bug fixes as long as they're confined to the

This patch does not make any sense to me as it only _allows_ the #, but I
see nothing that puts the # into the string being tested.
The '#' is being put out by multipath -l if it can't find the necessary
information in sysfs. This only helps testing, so I can leave this out,
but it does now harm either.

How exactly are you testing multipath?
Well, in an ideal world against an EMC Clariion but since this one sits
behind a firewall and the servers attached to it have a hard time
getting up to date packages and since I don't have this at home I use
KVM and a hacked up hw-detect that puts out a multipath.conf like:

defaults {
getuid_callout /bin/scsi_id.sh
}

blacklist_exceptions {
devnode ^hda
}

defaults {
user_friendly_names yes
}

Once I cleaned up the grub-install patch I put out an image for testing.

I would say that the comments were at most an invitation to prepare a new
patch and submit that for review again.

Another example is the commit you did to the manual. You asked for
   review,
but then used a minor comment from someone who's himself not actually
   part
of the team as a justification to commit the change. It would have been
much nicer if you'd left a bit more time for the actual maintainers of
   the
manual to respond (especially when you know people are away at a
conference). After you already committed I myself no longer saw any point
in commenting, so I didn't. I will now probably just rewrite the text if
   I
see a reason to do so.

I really totally disagree with the way you appropriate things and am even
   at
this point starting to consider whether your commit access to the D-I SVN
   repository should just be revoked.

While I fully agree with your complains and also think that Robert
should really be more careful in the future I also think that we all
do mistakes and learn from them.

He has been very active and tries to make things go fast (as I also do
mistakenly sometimes) however this doesn't justify his commit right
  removal.

Mistakes are far from usual misbehaviour and I'm sure Robert will do
his best to avoid this to happen again. Am I right Robert?

 Hey,

Sorry, I missunderstood. Please, would you tell me which specific rules I
should observe for each part of D-I? I understand I can handle win32-loader/
directory freely, but for the rest I really don't know, and was just using
 common sense.

Alternatively, if you can setup ACLs that would restrict my commit rights to
win32-loader/ directory, I would feel comfortable with that.

Common sense is all I ask for. And the common sense is: do not trample over
components for which you are not a lead maintainer, especially for
components (or ports) that _do_ have active maintainers.
Give others the time to respond and do not commit unless you have _explicit_
agreement from those maintainers.

Just like Otavio, I _do_ see your contributions, but I also strongly feel
that you're often way too pushy, both in discussions (like over gnash),
migrations (grub2) and commits.
I have a very string feeling that I cannot trust your judgement because
you're always wanting to jump 10 steps ahead, without due considerations of
risks and proper timing.

As someone who does a lot of coordinating for D-I, I constantly have the
feeling that I have to be extra alert for whatever next crazy change you'll
want to push past everybody and that's just not a comfortable feeling.

As you may know my prime concern is to keep things reliable and working
_while_ still moving forward.

This patch does not make any sense to me as it only _allows_ the #,

The '#' is being put out by multipath -l if it can't find the necessary
information in sysfs. This only helps testing, so I can leave this out,
but it does now harm either.

If it's to support some standard feature of multipath I have no problem with

Bug#468738: partman-crypto: unsafe_swap: code completely broken

2008-02-29 Thread Frans Pop
Package: partman-crypto
Version: 12
Severity: important

The code below from partman-crypto/commit.d/unsafe_swap is completely
broken in at least three ways.

0 # Ignore e.g. swap on lvm on crypto
 1 device=$(cat $dev/device)
 2 if $(echo $device | grep -q ^/dev/mapper/); then
 3 found=1
 4 for majmin in $(dmsetup deps $device | cut -d : -f2 |\
 5 tr -d ( | tr ) \n); do
 6 maj=$(echo $majmin | sed 's/,.*//')
 7 min=$(echo $majmin | sed 's/.*,//')
 8 status=$(dmsetup status -j $maj -m $min 2 /dev/null |\
 9 cut -d' ' -f3)
10   if [ $? -ne 0 ] || [ $status != crypt ]; then
11 found=0
12 fi
13 done
14 [ $found ] continue
15 fi

1) The code produces errors like this:
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): [
Mar  1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661):  !=
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): crypt
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): ]
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661):
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): [:
Mar 1 01:17:18 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): crypt: unknown operand

The reason for that is that $status in line 10 can apparently be empty and
should thus be quoted.

2) The exit code test in line 10 is broken because it tests the result of
'cut' and not of 'dmsetup', and thus basically always 0.

This error probably contributes to 1).

3) The code will _always_ jump out of the loop at line 14 because $found
is always non-empty (either 0 or 1).

I suppose line 11 should be 'found=' and the test in line 14 should be
'[ $found ]'.

I have decided not to fix this myself as any fix will cause a change in
behavior that really should be tested.

When this is fixed, please try to change the code such that a 'set -e'
could be added to the script without it failing. This means for example
that line 14 should not read:
[ $found ] continue
but rather:
[ -z $found ] || continue

These issues were found after investigating the errors in the log from
Tiago: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2008/02/msg00865.html
AFAICT they are totally unrelated to the XFS issue that was the cause
of partman eventually failing.

Package: partman-crypto
Version: 12
Severity: important

result in the following error:
Mar 1 01:19:24 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): [:
Mar 1 01:19:24 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): /boot: unknown operand

# Check 1 - Is cryptoroot possible?
if [ $mnt = / ]; then

I saw this error only after adding a loop-AES random encrypted swap
partition in a test that already had a regular encrypted partition.

The problem is probably a bit earlier where the mountpoint is being
determined. Seems like it fails to allow for the case where a partition
does not have a mount point (as in the case of swap).

In general it seems that partman-crypto could do with some preventive
quoting of variables used in tests as obviously they _can_ (unexpectedly)
be empty.

This issue were found after investigating the errors in the log from
Tiago: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2008/02/msg00865.html
AFAICT it is totally unrelated to the XFS issue that was the cause

The reason I used expertgui is because of the complete reporting of
settings used, not because I am an expert. Last year it was necessary
to get PC-Chips Pentium - 200 Mhz machine working with some non-default
settings. This Pentium II - 450 Mhz did not require any modifications
to the settings.

The network setup is complex. The computer is connected to the basement
router which connects to the upstairs router through a wireless link.
The upstairs router is the DHCP server. This allows me to have the old
computers downstairs. I suspect the wireless link is not always
reliable. The Installer did not allow much time for the DHCP assignment
to happen.

The failures during network access appear to be due to a lack of a
timeout while waiting for a reply. There is no option offered by the
Installer to the user. Rebooting and trying again appears to be the
only way out. Discouraging.

It does allow you to retry though. In fact, that is the default option after
an initial failure.

Normally I'd expect a single step to fail and in most cases those steps can
be repeated. However, I'd suggest fixing the cause instead of continuing to
just retry.

If the timeouts are sufficient for normal installations over the Internet,
even in countries where the internet is not all that reliable, then I would
still say that the basic problem here is structural unreliability of your
local network.

Thank you for expanding the documentation on the 'rescue' command.

It's not structurally different from the Lenny installer.

I'm closing this report as I don't see anything here for us to fix.
Good luck with getting the system installed.
