Bug#468490: debian-40r3-sparc-CD-1.iso CD installation-reports
This System has no screen and no DVD, so I think it is a good idea to install CD #1 over a simple 9600-Modem line but the installer has to many screen-codes. I have installed quite often over a serial line without real problems. It certainly did not get progressively slower. Did you try the network-console option? That allows to continue the installation over SSH after the network has been set up. Configure network: [should be auto-DHCP but no success] Problems getting a DHCP lease have in the past always proven to be a local network configuration issue. It was only after writing the BR that i actually found where the strings are and noticed the warning about it's width. Although we were able to shorten it down, i still think this matter should be taken in consideration because limiting the width of the translation may give rise to inferior, or even incorrect, translations. Bug#468573: Default sources.list should use release names, not 'stable'
Package: debian-installer Version: 20070308etch2 Severity: normal It's almost a daily occurence on #debian for people to come in with broken systems because the installer has given them a sources.list with 'stable', and they've unintentionally upgraded partially to a new release by doing a simple packaging operation. It seems that it would be better for the installer to use explicit release names instead of 'stable'. Of course, the fact that people are having trouble with something doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong. Even so, I can't see the upside of using 'stable'. An oldstable-stable upgrade is not simple enough that it makes sense for it to happen as a natural result of using the packaging tools as opposed to because the admin has made a deliberate decision to upgrade. In the case of people who simply aren't aware of the idea of oldstable-stable upgrades, I think it makes more sense to leave their systems as the originally-installed release indefinitely than it does to let them partially upgrade (or do an attempt at an upgrade with dist-upgrade). I think the chance that they'll figure out that the apt output they're seeing means that they need to go to www.debian.org, read the release notes, and then follow them carefully in order to upgrade their system, is quite small. Bug#468668: Unable to start d-i after running win32-loader (empty GRUB)
Package: win32-loader Version: 0.6.3 Severity: normal On a new laptop on which I never used win32-loader successfully before, I succeeded to run win32-loader now that it works on Vista 64-bit (thank you), but it failed once rebooting and trying to launch d-i. After selecting in Windows' bootloader to run d-i, I get a GRUB 2 menu with no choices. A first choice was selected, but there was no label and I only saw that it was highlighted. I couldn't boot it. I can't remember what's supposed to happen after choosing to run d-i, so I don't know whether I should see choices or whether it's abnormal that I see GRUB. I don't know the actual win32-loader version I used, I'm putting 0.6.3 because that's the current version and I downloaded debian.exe yesterday. This only happened on 1 machine once. And the common sense is: do not trample over components for which you are not a lead maintainer, especially for components (or ports) that _do_ have active maintainers. Give others the time to respond and do not commit unless you have _explicit_ agreement from those maintainers. Just like Otavio, I _do_ see your contributions, but I also strongly feel that you're often way too pushy, both in discussions (like over gnash), migrations (grub2) and commits. I have a very string feeling that I cannot trust your judgement because you're always wanting to jump 10 steps ahead, without due considerations of risks and proper timing. As someone who does a lot of coordinating for D-I, I constantly have the feeling that I have to be extra alert for whatever next crazy change you'll want to push past everybody and that's just not a comfortable feeling. This error probably contributes to 1). 3) The code will _always_ jump out of the loop at line 14 because $found is always non-empty (either 0 or 1). I suppose line 11 should be 'found=' and the test in line 14 should be '[ $found ]'. I have decided not to fix this myself as any fix will cause a change in behavior that really should be tested. When this is fixed, please try to change the code such that a 'set -e' could be added to the script without it failing. This means for example that line 14 should not read: [ $found ] continue but rather: [ -z $found ] || continue These issues were found after investigating the errors in the log from Tiago: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2008/02/msg00865.html AFAICT they are totally unrelated to the XFS issue that was the cause of partman eventually failing. Bug#468739: partman-crypto: unsafe_swap: code completely broken
Package: partman-crypto Version: 12 Severity: important The code below from partman-crypto/check.d/crypto_check_mountpoints can result in the following error: Mar 1 01:19:24 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): [: Mar 1 01:19:24 main-menu[857]: (process:10661): /boot: unknown operand # Check 1 - Is cryptoroot possible? if [ $mnt = / ]; then I saw this error only after adding a loop-AES random encrypted swap partition in a test that already had a regular encrypted partition. The problem is probably a bit earlier where the mountpoint is being determined. Seems like it fails to allow for the case where a partition does not have a mount point (as in the case of swap). In general it seems that partman-crypto could do with some preventive quoting of variables used in tests as obviously they _can_ (unexpectedly) be empty. This issue were found after investigating the errors in the log from Tiago: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2008/02/msg00865.html AFAICT it is totally unrelated to the XFS issue that was the cause of partman eventually failing. Bug#468451: Installation Report for Testing that Failed.

The randomness of these errors make me suspect that there is a problem with your system, or possibly your network connection. Third attempt: Used rescuegui. Network configured automatically. Select and Install Software completed. Installation appeared to finish. Booted up from hard disk. User name not accepted. Root password not accepted. Used Shadow file in User setup. An installation with 'rescue' is not intended to result in a bootable system. Please don't try random things without knowing why you're doing them. Cheers, FJP Thank you for replying. The reason I used expertgui is because of the complete reporting of settings used, not because I am an expert. Last year it was necessary to get PC-Chips Pentium - 200 Mhz machine working with some non-default settings. This Pentium II - 450 Mhz did not require any modifications to the settings. The network setup is complex. The computer is connected to the basement router which connects to the upstairs router through a wireless link. The upstairs router is the DHCP server. This allows me to have the old computers downstairs. I suspect the wireless link is not always reliable. The Installer did not allow much time for the DHCP assignment to happen. The failures during network access appear to be due to a lack of a timeout while waiting for a reply. There is no option offered by the Installer to the user. Rebooting and trying again appears to be the only way out. Discouraging. Thank you for expanding the documentation on the 'rescue' command. Another sentence on the F4 page would be helpful. I thought 'rescue' applied to aborted installations. I have not found any other documentation. I tried to do what I could with my limited (mis)understanding. During the 10 hour wait for network downloading I discovered that the application I am interested in, PRIME95, can be run under stable Debian Linux. Perhaps the stable installation will be within my capabilities. Gratefully Bob Stryk

It does allow you to retry though. In fact, that is the default option after an initial failure. The failures during network access appear to be due to a lack of a timeout while waiting for a reply. There is no option offered by the Installer to the user. Rebooting and trying again appears to be the only way out. Discouraging. Normally I'd expect a single step to fail and in most cases those steps can be repeated. However, I'd suggest fixing the cause instead of continuing to just retry. If the timeouts are sufficient for normal installations over the Internet, even in countries where the internet is not all that reliable, then I would still say that the basic problem here is structural unreliability of your local network. Thank you for expanding the documentation on the 'rescue' command. Another sentence on the F4 page would be helpful. I thought 'rescue' applied to aborted installations. I have not found any other documentation. I tried to do what I could with my limited (mis)understanding. See the installation guide. During the 10 hour wait for network downloading I discovered that the application I am interested in, PRIME95, can be run under stable Debian Linux. Perhaps the stable installation will be within my capabilities. It's not structurally different from the Lenny installer. I'm closing this report as I don't see anything here for us to fix. Good luck with getting the system installed. Cheers, FJP ---End Message---
