Bug#399840: Do we want an ssh-server task? vs. Bug#452388: "standard" system

That's not how the standard task works: it is defined by the Priority field of packages, not a list we can put things in like the others. And an important argument against ssh-server in standard is that we want to have as few services as possible that listen for network connections in a standard install. Note that we already _do_ install ssh-server when an installation uses network-console, i.e. when the installation itself uses ssh-server. > I feel like the worst problem with the Standard task is that it's an > artifical collection, not something with a purpose like the other > tasks. No, it is not a random collection. It is what the project has defined as "the set of utilities that users expect to be present by default on a normal Linux/Unix system". Christian Perrier writes: > I'd very much appreciate to have more input about this. I think that > an SSH server deserves to be put in light in some way. On the other > hand, having a task for only one package is kind of overkill Why not put the ssh server (and client) into the "standard" task? That would at least provide a use case for that task. Then rename it to Login server or such. I feel like the worst problem with the Standard task is that it's an artifical collection, not something with a purpose like the other tasks. Standard systems nowadays are either graphical workstations or servers with a specific purpose. I never install the standard task on the latter, because that causes additional maintenance burden due to more frequent security updates and later a more lengty and potentially more convoluted upgrade. I rather install a handful of often needed utilities (bzip2, file, iptables, less, lsof, ntp, psmisc, screen, socat, sudo, tcpdump, host, exim4 and strace) with aptitude, which keeps the dependencies (automatic relations) obvious as well. -- Regards, Feri. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". tags 418272 wontfix thanks Even if jscalibrator wouldn't trigger the installation of Mono packages, I don't really think that it's worth being added to each and every desktop system installed with the desktop task. That bug didn't progress that much since it was reported. My main concern about it is that it would probably open the gates for too many similar requests for "please-add-my-pet-server" tasks. Bug#452388: Back on "'standard system' is confusing" bug report
(CC'ing some contributors in the thread who might be missing this mail otherwise) I went again on this bug report (against tasksel) about the name of the "standard" task (and description) being somewhat confusing. The thread in this bug report is very long, but finally concludes that a rewrite is needed in some waywith, as often, various (sometimes contradictory) proposals. The best compromise as of now, in the thread, seems to be: Description: standard (non-graphical) core operating environment This is the subset of the distribution, installed by default, which can be added upon to provide a more featureful and tailored operating system. The current description is indeed: Description: Standard system This task installs a reasonably small character-mode system. I think we might want to converge to something like: Description: Standard (non-graphical) system This task installs a reasonably small character-mode system. I think that actually the synopsis is to be enhanced to make it clearer that the standard system is not graphical, which is certainly the main flaw of the current wording. (note that the synopsis is what appears in the menu during D-I). On the other hand, the current long description is fairly clear and includes a word I really like (reasonably) that makes it clear that the contents of the task is essnetially a compromise. I propose to name it s3c24xx, are you fine with that name? I'm currently adapting Luca's patch to more closely follow what other arm subarchitectures do. I mainly followed the iop32x example and added an openmoko flavour which will create a network-console uBoot image which should support both GTA01 and GTA02. I hope to submit my patches soon. Do you think that we have to wait committing anything until we have a kernel in the archive? Until we don't switch to a VCS which supports easy local branching and shareing of these branches (hint, hint git...) this would be a major pain in the ass. So I hope the d-i team allows us to commit our work as soon as the basic nameing is sorted out and the patches are sane. Gaudenz -- Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again.
