I've no objection to working (it would be more work) out of the
kernel-source tree. hppa's diff to the non-arch code are not
particularly intrusive, if I remember correctly (and at a cursory glance
of lsdiff).

Yes, but if I have my firmware already set to use /vmlinuz, it would be
much simpler to just put the symlink someplace where it's useful.

Can you try the daily builds, a see if the new nobootloader with explicit
/boot partition mention makes sense for you.

Ok.

But i agree that you probably need link_in_boot to be set.

Comments/Problems:

Installer installed riscstation kernel on my netwinder. As a result the
machine did not come back after reboot.

Also, if a /boot partition exists, could the vmlinuz symlink be put in /boot?

Due to the way the netwinder firmware works, it looks for a file on a
partition, following symlinks. Since the vmlinuz symlink is on / it's useless
because it's looking with /boot as it's base.

Since the firmware can't mount ext2r0, it would be better if this was enforced more
strictly, you almost certainly need a /boot partition.

Hmm. It's a problem because the firmware of some machines will only
boot 64-bit kernels, some will only boot 32-bit, and some will boot
either.

The best thing to do, would be to always install 32bit by default. As
when a person tries to boot on a machine that only has 64-bit firmware,
they will have to manually edit the PALO commandline to use vmlinux64, which
will result in them having a parisc64 uname -m entry. So I'd think
install based on the uname -m entry would work.

There's no problem, afaik, booting SMP on UP machines, so that should be
fine.

I was going to take a look at this, but I cannot seem to figure out how
to check out d-i, and the daily svn snapshot is b0rked.

I'm going to copy the parisc-linux list with this, for comments.

Everything worked fine until installing the base system. It

This resulted in depmod failing, and hence, the install failing. The
correct kernel to have installed on this machine would have been 2.4.26-32-smp.

Bug#253789: netwinder tc1 success

If not, it'll be more complicated.

Nod. The Netwinder firmware is pretty braindead, so instead of having to
edit the kernfile variable to point to different versions, it would nice
to just leave /boot/vmlinuz. The logic behind this is that the NW
firmware can only read the kernel off a ext2 revision 0 filesystem, so
you basically *must* have a seperate boot.

No, this has been reported elsewhere; I believe it's currently
considered to be either a toolchain bug or a bug with libssl using
incorrect optimizations, but I don't know the details.

Ok. Thanks,

Nod.

This is actually a compiler bug, see #250185

Aye. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. The whole reason I'm using this
to test is that the nw running unstable was quite thoroughly broken. :)

Bug#253789: netwinder tc1 success

2004-06-10 Thread Kyle McMartin
Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: test candidate 1
uname -a: Linux orodruin 2.4.25-netwinder #1 Tue May 18 00:49:19 BST 2004 armv4l
GNU/Linux
Date: Fri Jun 11 00:53:40 EDT 2004
Method: netboot
Booted off the network (tftp) and installed from archive.progeny.com.

Machine: Rebel Netwinder
Processor: StrongARM-110 rev 3
Memory: 64M
Root Device: IDE
Root Size/partition table:

Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

Everything went swimmingly. When I rebooted to finish the install, I had
to manually set the kernfile variable to /vmlinuz-2.4.25-netwinder. A
better solution would be for the installer to detect that it's installing
to a seperate /boot partition and to add a /boot/vmlinuz symlink instead of
an /vmlinuz one.

As well, when I finished the base install (opting out of using tasksel or
dselect), I was unable to install ssh. It installed to the point where it
tried to generate keys, and then died with Illegal instruction. I suspect
this is a hardware problem with my netwinder, however.

Cheers for the good work, the progress is fantastic!

Re: if something is not done, hppa will not have an installer for sarge

I just want to make sure that you hppa folk realise that hppa is further
from having a working installer for sarge than any architecture aside

he's currently away, and his time is split amoung other ports anyway).
The d-i port really needs more than one person working on it, if it's
going to ship with beta 4 of d-i. That's in two weeks.

Note that hppa basically worked in mid-January, but it's not been kept
 up.

The problem with hppa now, seems to be the same as what Richard Hirst
reported in January. The initrd issues seem to have been taken care of,
and now it's simply a segmentation fault causing problems.

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Mounted devfs on /dev
Freeing unused kernel memory: 252k freed
Setting up filesystem, please wait ...
umount: /initrd: Invalid argument
Segmentation fault
Segmentation fault
[...]

Is what I get when booting the latest netboot build on my 715/100XC.
