Bug#292115: wmacpi: uninstallable in unstable

2005-01-24 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: wmacpi
Version: 2.0-1
Severity: grave

Version 2.0-1 of wmacpi Depends: libdockapp1, which is no longer in
unstable. Please rebuild this package against the current version of
libdockapp-dev.

Because there are bugs in previous versions of wsoundprefs and wsoundserver
whose fixes are waiting on the new libdockapp2 before they can reach
testing, this transition to libdockapp2 is being considered release critical
for sarge, and wmacpi will be removed from testing temporarily pending the
necessary rebuild.

Thanks,

The 2.6.7 kernel is no longer supported for 686 and
is no longer in the debian archive. Can you please see
if this problem manifest on 2.6.8 (target for sarge),
or 2.6.10 (kernel for testing stuff out).

Did you read the "(note the omission of )" bit? The alias is,
then, the name of the folder, without the i://[EMAIL PROTECTED] prefix.

And there are lots of ways, in fact:

folder-hook +a.onefolder 'push imap://[EMAIL

Bug#292065: #292065 numerous security holes in xshisen

Hi,

concerning your

1. Unsafe resource file reading.

and

2. Unsafe XSHISENLIB environment variable.

Both of them, if exploitable, would be bugs in the Xrm or Xpm library
respectively.

The same argument can probably made against pretty much any X
application and X itself. There is a lot of software that just loads
in user defined xpm files and such.

Yes, I think that, given the purpose (give good "targets" to

I have done nothing ot circumvent anything. All I did was install

reportbug version is: 3.5ubuntu2

Certainly, I agree. This should not have happened, but it's not my
fault. 'reportbug' should either do the right thing or not be
available.

I tried to use the Debian installer with Debian testing
(Sarge, version of 1/17/05, rc2 release). Unfortunately, when it
came to partitioning, I selected
  "manually partition"
and was presented only with the possibility of partitioning the whole
disk: Maxtor 6Y160M0 (163 GB)
The installer knows the disk, but did not show me my existing
 partitions for reformatting.

I have a SATA drive (Maxtor 6Y160M0, 163 GB).
Windows XP reports that I am using:
IRQ 20 NVIDIA CK8S Serial ATA Controller (v2.5)
It reports the following sharing:
IRQ 20Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
  IRQ 20NVIDIA CK8S Serial ATA Controller (v2.5)

I have 6 partitions: NTFS/FAT32/Linux swap/ext3/ext3/ext3
The ext3 partitions are currently occupied by: Knoppix3.6/home/Knoppix3.7
It was my intention to overwrite one of the Knoppix partitions with
  the Debian system.
The Debian installer apparently didn't recognize my partitions.
I aborted the Debian install, and tested my partitions both with
parted using Knoppix, and with the Mandrake Official 10.1 installer.
The Mandrake installer read my partitions fine, and I successfully resized
the last partition as a test. (I plan to overwrite it with Debian.)
I tested with parted 1.6.9, and parted was not able to see my partitions.
I'm guessing that the Debian installer uses some of the same code as parted.

Can you suggest a workaround?

Bug#292110: munin-node: postfix_mailstats uses incorrect offset for determining reject code

2005-01-24 Thread Micah Anderson
Package: munin-node
Version: 1.0.5-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The newer postfix logs produce the error 450 for a reject at a
different location, the subscript for looking for this in the plugin
is 13, it should now be 10, if you will look at this example log line:

Jan 24 06:25:44 buffy postfix/smtpd[9269]: NOQUEUE: reject: MAIL from
K56-ip-415.indo.net.id[202.159.125.156]: 450
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Sender address rejected: Domain not found; from=<[EMAIL
PROTECTED]> proto=ESMTP helo=

and you count (starting at 0) from the beginning, you will find that
the 450 is printed on element 10, not thirteen. The plugin says:

$rejects->{$codes[13]} ++;

That should be a 10, I've attached a patch that changes this.

Yes, because unless you enable -DAT_64BIT when building, the code assumes

I know this, and I tested this, but this code that handle 64 bits

Bug#290180: More information about my Alexandria woes

2005-01-24 Thread David Weinehall
I have now managed to get a repeatable crash from Alexandria that also
gives a crashdump. The only problem is that while the crash is
repeatable, the dump message is not... The crash seems to be related
to this bug though, since I only get with a lot of books in the library.

Steps:

1. Start Alexandria (well, duh!)
2. Choose Refresh from menu (pressing Ctrl+F does *not* give a
crashdump, but it still crashes, since Alexandria always crashes for
me when I switch to list mode...)
3. Choose View as list (either from the menubar or from the pulldown)
4. *kaboom*

Bug#292068: dictd: dictd doesn't need the same locale as dictfmt

2005-01-24 Thread Ramses Rodriguez Martinez
Hi Kirk,

> Since
> 7-bit ASCII is a subset of both ISO-8859-1 (latin1) and utf-8 , an
> ASCII dictionary may be used with any ISO-8859 or utf-8 locale.

Yes, that's what i mean.

> If a dictionary's locale uses the
> latin1 character set, any latin1 locale may be used for dictd.

But RFC says dict should use UTF/ascii7 for encoding, ¿don't you think it
would be much better for compatibility to prevent people from using/building
Latin-1 dictionaries and --locale?. Many people don't have a utf-capable
xterm, but they can use dictl.

> What package is this? Did you mean the dict-freedict-eng-deu package?

Yes, sorry. Probably it happens with the rest of dict-freedict-* packages, but
i didn't test it.

Bug#283171: clisp: FTBFS on mipsel: testsuite failure

2005-01-24 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Will,

This release-critical bug report about clisp failing to build on mipsel has
been open for some time. Has there been any progress on resolving the
testsuite problems on this architecture? Since the only package depending
on clisp (mcvs) has already had its mipsel binaries removed from the archive
because previous clisp binaries that did build on mipsel weren't usable,
perhaps it would be better to ask ftpmaster to remove clisp's binaries for
this architecture as well?

Thanks,

reportbug in Ubuntu is explicitly and brutally patched to submit bugs to
Ubuntu rather than to Debian, in order to avoid exactly this problem. You
must be mixing packages from Debian and Ubuntu; perhaps you have Debian's
reportbug package installed. Though, Debian's reportbug is now smart enough
to recognize that it is on an Ubuntu system and do the right thing (though I
haven't tested it personally), so I have no idea how you managed this. At
any rate, yes, we already thought of this, and took measures to prevent this
kind of problem, but you have somehow circumvented them.

At any rate, as I already explained to you in a previous message, you should
report bugs to Ubuntu Bugzilla when in doubt. We do not want Debian
developers' time to be wasted filtering out Ubuntu bugs.

Bug#292068: dictd: dictd doesn't need the same locale as dictfmt

2005-01-24 Thread Kirk Hilliard
Hi Ramses,

Thanks for the bug report.

> I think the manpage is out-to-date about the --locale option.

I assume that you object to this sentence:

The locale used for the server should be the same as that used for
dictfmt when the database was built (specifically, the locale under
  which the index was sorted).

I will correct this in the next upload, stating that the locales need
to be compatible, not identical, and add what compatibility means, but
keep it shorter than what /usr/share/doc/dictd/README.Dictd-locales.gz
says on the subject:

dictd(8)says "The locale used for the server should be the same
as that used for dictfmt when the database was built." In practice,
any utf-8 or 7-bit ASCII dictionary may be used with any locale that
includes .utf-8. In general, if the character set and collating order
of a dictionary's locale is the same as that of dictd's locale, there
should be no compatibility problem. If a dictionary's locale uses the
latin1 character set, any latin1 locale may be used for dictd. Since
  7-bit ASCII is a subset of both ISO-8859-1 (latin1) and utf-8 , an
ASCII dictionary may be used with any ISO-8859 or utf-8 locale.

You also mentioned:

> And dict-freedict-eng-ger should not ask me to change /etc/default/dictd
> to de_DE.UTF-8 if my locale has the string ".UTF-8" already.

What package is this? Did you mean the dict-freedict-eng-deu package?

I request an adopter for the quik package.

The package description is:
The quik package provides the functionality necessary for booting a

Bug#271661: Cacti version 0.8.6c has been released.

2005-01-24 Thread Jesse Molina
Hi Franz
I am still interested. I have built a 0.86c .deb and upgraded a couple
of systems, but I need to test it a little bit more. I also need to
figure out how I am going to build cactid on the other platforms.
I've got a copy of the Debian Reference here on my desk and I have been
reading up on maintainer requirements and such (probably overboard for
what is really required).
The maintainer is busy and I don't think he has time to care for this
package any longer. I shot him an eMail some time ago and he seemed
like a good guy, just busy.
I've been busy too -- girl friend's car got stolen, personal projects,
helping a friend move out of state, etc etc.
I will get back to this as soon as I can. If someone else wants to take
the package, that's fine. This is a great piece of software and it
needs to be supported.

Cactid version 0.8.6d has been released. This is a very minor release
that fixes several compilation bugs that cropped up in the 0.8.6c
release. I do not recommend upgrading if your current version of Cactid
is functional.

Bug#287677: mpatrol: FTBFS (amd64/gcc-4.0): cast from 'Pixel*' to 'Cardinal' loses precision

2005-01-24 Thread Oohara Yuuma
According to the XtVaGetApplicationResources() manual, the recommended way is:

struct dummy {
  Pixel alcol,
  void *addrbase,
  ...
}:
static struct dummy foo;
static XtResource resources[] =
{
{"alloc", XmCColor, XmRPixel, sizeof(Pixel),
 (Cardinal) (&(foo.alcol) - &foo), XmRString, (XtPointer) "black"},
{"base", "Base", XmRInt, sizeof(void *),
 (Cardinal) (&(foo.addrbase) - &foo), XmRImmediate, (XtPointer) NULL},
...
}:
...
XtVaGetApplicationResources(appwidget, &foo, resources,
XtNumber(resources), NULL);

I don't think a pad between members of a struct is larger than 2^32 bit,
but it is not guaranteed. Something is wrong with the base+offset design of X.

Bug#292103: Doesn't remember location of temporary directory

2005-01-24 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: k3b
Version: 0.11.18-2
Severity: normal

Hello!

Thanks for packaging k3b: it's the best CD burner I found in Debian so
far!

k3b works perfectly here except that I need to reinput the temp
directory every time.

This is how it goes:

I select "CD Copy and CD cloning", then I set a different "Temp
Directory" (I have tmp on tempfs and lots of space elsewhere).

I click on "Save user defaults", then burn a CD and exit the
application. When I get back in, I find all my settings except that
the temp directory has been reset to "/tmp/kde-enrico/". Clicking on
   "User settings" doesn't help.

Ciao,

Enrico

Bug#291913: bug #291913 comments retracted

Ref: bug report #291913

Greetings-
I appreciate the fast response and need to retract my
comments about the differences between the Debian gettext
and GNU gettext.

  > This is not true. Please read my reply to Jakob Bohm.
I have built the gettext-0.14.1 from the upstream GNU source and there
was no Java because "configure" could not find a Java compiler. I have
built the Debian package from your gettext-0.14.1-7 diff and there was
no Java in that package for the same reason. The new gettext-0.14.1-8
package added the Java support because gettext "configure" found you had
a Java compiler and so built the Java support. Now I realize what you
did and admit that is not really a bug because that is the same as the
GNU gettext source when the Java support is configured.

Changing from gettext-0.14.1-7 to gettext-0.14.1-8 changed these build
dependencies:

Source: gettext
Version: 0.14.1-7
Binary: gettext-base, gettext-doc, gettext, gettext-el
Maintainer: Santiago Vila <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Architecture: any
Standards-Version: 3.6.1
Build-Depends: libexpat1-dev
Build-Depends-Indep: texi2html
Build-Conflicts: java-compiler
Source: gettext
Version: 0.14.1-8
Binary: gettext-base, gettext-doc, gettext, gettext-el
Maintainer: Santiago Vila <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Architecture: any
Standards-Version: 3.6.1
Build-Depends: libexpat1-dev, gcj [!mips !mipsel], libgcj4-dev [!mips
!mipsel], fastjar, jikes-classpath
Build-Depends-Indep: texi2html

This change would seem to be your decision to enable Java support
included in the upsteam gettext and so I retract my previous comments on
this package in total.

Have you considered building separate conflicting packages; one with
Java and C# support and one without like the old gettext?

I fold. Have a nice day.

Bug#290250: Waiting on NEW queue

2005-01-24 Thread Stephen Gran
Hello all,

Due to some unfortunate choosing on my part of a moment to do some
package reorganization, the fix for all of these bugs is stuck in the
NEW queue. Packages are available at people.debian.org/~sgran if people
need them sooner.

Thanks all for your patience,

Ahm, you were right.
Changed UserAgent string of Firebox 1.0+dfsg.1-2
to 1.0-5 (using about:config), and the URL works.

Ergo, close the bug, please.

I am really sorry for having wasted your time.

I just took a look at the source. And as it stands the list of devices
to examine as potential members of an array is defined in problelist
which only includes IDE devices (drivers/ide/raid/medley.c line ~195).

Furthermore, medley_get_metadata() (drivers/ide/raid/medley.c line ~450)
appears to be ide-specific. I am not sure what the implications of
adding SCSI support would be, but I your assumption that medley.o
does not handle SCSI disks is correct.

That definately bares futher investigation. Though I am tempted to think
that it might be a problem with having both siimage and via82cxxx
loaded, rather than with ide-detect. But in any case it is clearly
a problem.

Bug#289134: GSL 1.6-1 FTBFS on powerpc

2005-01-24 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

In response to the mail by Andre Lehovich dated 24 January 2005 at 17:36:
| I just successfully compiled GSL 1.6-1 on my G4 (Sarge
| environment). Since I didn't have to patch anything, I
| think that Dirk's suspicion is correct, i.e. the problem is
| a configuration bug on the buildd server.
|
| One potential clue are the failed tests hidden in the middle
| of the buildd log [1]. (Search for "FAIL: test"). I have
| no idea what is causing that; the same tests passed on my
| machine.
|
| [1]
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=gsl&ver=1.6-1&arch=powerpc&stamp=1104990349&file=log&as=raw
|
| The compile log looks uninteresting, but I can forward it if
| someone thinks it would be useful.

And as I said before, gsl had never ever failed on this arch before. I truly
believe this to be a spurious issue on the host, and not a FTBFS.

So could someone with a powerpc buildd *please* reschedule a build?

Thanks, Dirk

It must be Ubuntu specific. I reported it with 'reportbug', and that
must not be smart enough to report bugs to Ubuntu's 'bugzilla'. Do you
think there's a way to route these kind of reports to them? What can be
done? It's difficult for the end-user to know who to report a bug to.

Bug#292096: Build failure with new i2c patch

2005-01-24 Thread Roberto Sanchez
Package: kernel-patch-2.4-i2c
Version: 1:2.9.0-11
I just tried to build kernel-source-2.4.27-8 patched with
kernel-patch-2.4-lm-sensors and kernel-patch-2.4-i2c. The build failed
with "error this_object_must_be_defined_as_export_objs_in_the_Makefile"
on line 443 of drivers/i2c/i2c-amd756.c
I had to add it to the export-objs target of drivers/i2c/Makefile for
the build to succeed.
Incidentally, I am building on Woody and the previous build (2.4.27-6
of the kernel source and 1:2.8.8-1 of i2c) worked just fine.

That actually is the source of my concern, which I explained poorly. I
encountered a package, raggle, which needs to depend on a text browser.
In an attempt to do so, they declared a depency on "links | lynx | w3m".
In bug number #292006 I complained to raggle, who indicated the lack of
a text-www-browser. Since then, I have stumbled accross this thread
about x-www-browser and text-www-browser:

   http://lists.debian.org/debian-policy/2003/12/msg00044.html

I have not read the entire thread, but it makes me think that perhaps
this problem would best be solved by the creation of a text-www-browser
virtaul package.

Yes, because unless you enable -DAT_64BIT when building, the code assumes
that sizeof(int) == sizeof(void *).  There *is* code in xt-aterm which
appears to be intended to support building for 64-bit targets, even if it's
only enabled for sparc64. Are you sure that setting this define isn't
enough to make the packages build correctly for alpha and ia64?

 Uhm... really?

 Oh... I hadn't noticed.

Thanks for the report. I think it's a mess up with the default files.

The new upstream version opens a can of worms (loopy license) and I have
not much time to look at what linmodems people did with their 2.9.9

The (only) problem I can see with this is that, should we add or remove a
new arch to an alias, you have to recompile everything to be completely in
sync.

This can be fixed by keeping the alias somewhere, instead of just expanding
it everywhere.

Use Fontforge to generate .afm files for the new fonts, then compare
them with the freely-available Adobe metrics, etc. There's a script
that ships with the Ghostscript source (toolbin/afmutil.py) that is
helpful in doing the comparision.

You can also use toolbin drawafm.ps to verify that the font files
actually match their bundled metrics (which has also been a problem
in the past).

Look for hinting errors? They do show up as rendering problems, but Owen
fixed the worst ones for the version that became our 8.11 release.

> Ok, I'll pass on anything I find out.

Thanks!

Re editing procedure, the .pfb files were the original bits released
under the GPL. Fontforge can load those, make changes, and re-save. The
native files count as 'source' to the extent they have data that doesn't
get serialized in writing out the type 1 versions, but for our part we
tend not to maintain those and rely on the .pfb/.afm files. How's that
for a non-answer?

Our general procedure is, as I indicated, to fix them up in Fontforge
and write out new versions, but then to regression test those new
versions. At least some of the problems we've had in the past have been
due to fontforge export bugs, and the rest to incautious editing.

Bug#292090: Sound is muted after the module is loaded.

2005-01-24 Thread Peter Verbaan
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.8-2

Problem:
When the snd-emu10k1 module is loaded, the sound gets muted.

Some investigation:
The /etc/alsa/init.d script calls the start() function
with parameter "0" and exits because
/proc/asound/card0 and /proc/asound/0 don't exist
(/proc is mounted by the way).
Adding "sleep 5" at the beginning of the start() function makes it work.

Further details:
The sound card is a Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03).
I am running up-to-date Debian unstable on a Linux kernel (i686, 2.6.10),
with udev (Version 0.050-5).

This is a limitation of the completion mechanism. There's no easy way to
detect redirection at arbitrary positions on the command line and act
accordingly. To do so would require each command completion function to
handle redirection internally. A more generic solution is required at
the bash level itself.

Bug#292088: bridge-utils: further documentation of MTU issues wanted

2005-01-24 Thread Matt Swift
Package: bridge-utils
Version: 1.0.4-1
Severity: wishlist

The documentation for bridge-utils does not address the topic of MTU
values for the bridge and its interfaces.

My limited experiments seem to show that the MTU of the bridge
interface is hardwired to be the minimum MTU of the bridged
interfaces, and that all traffic through the bridge uses the bridge's
MTU, even if the source and destination of a packet are on an
interface that has a higher MTU. I could find no documentation to
confirm these guesses, nor any discussion of how it may or may not be
possible to use an MTU higher than the minimum when the source and
destination interfaces both support the higher MTU.

Especially as Gigabit ethernet becomes more popular, this topic will
become more relevant for more users.

Here is a motivating situation.

I use a bridge in combination with openvpn and samba to allow remote
VPN clients to participate in the Samba LAN on the physical ethernet
adapter eth0. This involves bridging eth0 with tap0 into br0 and
pointing samba and dnsmasq at br0. Everything works fine with a 100BT
LAN and the default MTU of 1500 on all three interfaces. Recently I
updated the LAN (eth0) to Gigabit-capable adapters and switch.
Changing the MTU of eth0 to 8000 does not increase the packet size for
traffic which originates and ends on eth0. I get an error if I try to
change the MTU of br0 to a number greater than the minimum MTU of the
bridge participants. I can't increase the MTU of tap0 above 1500, so
the bridge seems to be limited to 1500 as well, which means that
samba is limited to 1500 MTU. I can show that the limitation is in
the bridge by removing the bridge and pointing samba directly at
eth0. In this case, tcpdump will confirm that packet size increases
with the MTU of eth0 (for example, MTU=8000 and packet size=8014).

It seems to me it ought to be possible to use jumbo packets for
traffic within eth0 (MTU=8000) and normalsize packets for traffic
involving tap0 (MTU=1500). I don't know a lot about this aspect of
networking, so I may be wrong. If MTU issues were discussed in the
documentation of bridge-utils, I could expect to learn the answers.

If there were such documentation, I might also know how to evaluate
the following problems, which could be deserving of actual (i.e.,
non-wishlist) bug reports:

When I change the MTU of an interface participating in a bridge
without first deleting the bridge, I get an onslaught of page
allocation failure message from the kernel, from any/all processing
running at the time. Here is an example one:

These errors persist until I delete the bridge with "ifdown br0".
Under some circumstances, I can successfully change the MTU of a
bridged interface if I do it while the bridge is down, then
re-establish the bridge.

I can do that if I use an MTU of 8000, but if I try an MTU of 8982, I
get the same page allocation errors whenever I try to bring up the
bridge.

If you think this last problem should be reported to another location,
such as the maintainer of the e1000 module, please let me know. Right
now, my analysis is stuck because I do not know how bridge-utils ought
to handle MTU.

OK, I am going to do a 1.1.2 earlier than I wanted in order to
fix this. anyway there are some bug fixes and speedups that will
be of benefit.

because of the mess and since there have been API changes and
additions in both libFLAC and libOggFLAC since 1.1.1 I plan on
bumping all the libtool numbers as follows: current++, revision=0
age=0. if this will cause problems please let me know.

I'll try to get this ready as soon as possible.

Again, good changes, when I can track down where your modified version
is I will be sure to use these in the future if I make new plugins.

Same question as before, COUNTER seems counter-intuitive, but I might
not understand why, after looking at the different types ABSOLUTE
seems right, but now I am not so sure.

oh, of course, as a debian developer who intends to have these
included in the debian package, they definately need to be DFSG
compliant, so GPL it away :)

Bug#291320: patch submission

2005-01-24 Thread Sergei Ivanov
> It would be nice if dpkg-deb could produce .deb archives where all
> files are owned by root:root, ignoring the ownership attributes from
> the filesystem.

Here is a patch for this, see rootowner.patch in the attachment.
It introduces options --root-owner, to create root-owned archives,
and --same-owner (the default).

The second patch is a usage example, it allows dpkg itself to be built
without (fake)root. It is relatively large as I had to remove all those
"-o root -g root" install arguments (useless anyway). Besides that, the
patch only deletes the `id -u` test and adds --root-owner to dpkg-deb.

Could you drop me a note on whether the feature is worth considering
for inclusion to dpkg, at some point in the future? (I don't know,
maybe I'm the only one who finds fakeroot inconvenient.)

Best regards,
Sergei Ivanov

Bug#292086: stock installed master.cf file causes postfix to fail to start

2005-01-24 Thread Marc Horowitz
Package: postfix
Version: 2.1.5-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I did a satellite install (as shown in the debconf information below).
The postinst script then installed /usr/share/postfix/master.cf.local
as /etc/postfix/master.conf. This file contains this line:

> sed -ne 81p /usr/share/postfix/master.cf.local
::1:smtp   inet n   -   -   -   -   smtpd

This caused postfix not to start:

Jan 24 19:33:44 ayer postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system
Jan 24 19:33:45 ayer postfix/master[2382]: fatal: /etc/postfix/master.cf: line
84: bad hostname or network address: ::1

Commenting out the line makes it work fine.

If I 'insmod ipv6', then the line works, too, but I shouldn't have to
install the ipv6 kernel module for postfix to work.

I can't seem to find where this is added. I've browsed through the CVS

and by downloading the .tar.gz's and looking in there.

I agree, I wish there was a better way to do it...

I'd love to modify it so that it can do that, if you can help me
figure out where the version is that you modified.

Also -- I don't know the difference between COUNTER and DERIVE, so I
did a little searching, and I believe this is the correct information:

"The Data Source Type (DST) which is one of GUAGE, COUNTER, DERIVE or
ABSOLUTE. The Guage DST works like you'd expect and is generally the
best choice. Counters continuously increase, Derives store a
derivative of the last and the current value, and Absolutes store
values which reset after each reading."

I dont really understand what a GAUGE is, but thats not what you are
asking. A COUNTER seems... counter-intuitive to me, because that means
people logging in and out would be graphed in an ever increasing
number (600 people logged in today, 600 tomorrow, the graph would then
show 1200? this doesn't seem to be appropriate). It seems to me that
the most useful graph would be to see how many
logins/logouts/disconnects and connects happen over time, and that
seems to me to be an Absolute report. However, I believe that you
understand this stuff better, so you may have more insight into this
than I do.

Thanks for clarifying the situation.

I'd be interested to hear about the methods you use to merge work back

Fontforge, or is there more to it than that? Do you work from .pfb/.afm
files, or Fontforge's .sfd, or some other format?

Bug#292085: kdelibs: Manpages use the GFDL but that's not acknowledged in the copyright file

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
Package: kdelibs
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Priority: important

Currently the kdelibs package provides a suite of manpages (some useful,
some not) that are installed together with the package but are licensed
GFDL. This license, however, is not acknowledged in the debian/copyright
file.

I would appreciate if the package maintainers would either consider
relicensing these manpages (given the current "position statement" of
Debian regarding the GFDL, see [1]). Failing that, the license should be
acknowledged in the debian/copyright file.

Regards

Can you please try to mount the filesystem using the cifs driver instead of
the smbfs driver? I believe the smbfs driver in 2.6 is, if not deprecated,
at least seriously lacking in maintenance.

Bug#289134: GSL 1.6-1 FTBFS on powerpc

2005-01-24 Thread Andre Lehovich

I would be very eager to help out if you let me know what else to do.
I'm not exacty sure what the gconfig kernel is, as I'm not building

make it into sid. If there's anything to test right now, I'd be glad

Each graph is individually useful for what it displays and although they both
could be said to display throughput, it might be more useful to say:

print "graph_title Postfix message throughput \n";

and

print "graph_title Postfix bytes throughput\n";

Additionally, since we are on the subject, bytes is a really small
unit for a graph of the size of messages going through a MTA of any
minor size. It creates incredibly rediculous looking numbers on my
graphs:

Cur: 435.97 Min: 1266222.20 Avg: 6865500.68 Max: 49558660.77

how does one change these to something less enormous and difficult to
parse (maybe kbytes/min or something?).

Thanks!
micah

Bug#292081: kdelibs: Proper manpage for lnusertemp

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
Package: kdelibs
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Priority: wishlist
Tags: patch

While reviewing temporary symlink issues in KDE (as part of the Debian
Security Audit work) I've found no documentation about the 'lnusertemp'
which is used by KDE so I had to dig into the sources and wrote one. I
would appreciate if you could review the attached manpage, proof read it,
and include it in the package for the benefit of other users.

Thanks

Javier
 manpage.1'. You may view
the manual page with: `docbook-to-man manpage.sgml | nroff -man |
less'. A typical entry in a Makefile or Makefile.am is:

manpage.1: manpage.sgml
docbook-to-man $< > $@

The docbook-to-man binary is found in the docbook-to-man package.
Please remember that if you create the nroff version in one of the
debian/rules file targets (such as build), you will need to include
docbook-to-man in your Build-Depends control field.

tool to create KDE resources and symlinks to them

  &dhpackage;

  tmp|socket|cache

DESCRIPTION

This manual page documents briefly the
  &dhpackage; command.

&dhpackage; is used to create KDE
resources in temporary directories and symlinks to them in
KDEHOME. The resource that needs to be created is
given as an argument and can be anyone of:

tmp: for the directory used
for storing temporary files. This directory should be preferably
on a local filesystem (available in KDE 2.x)

socket: for the directory
that holds temporary sockets. This directory needs to be on the
local filesystem (available in KDE 2.x)

cache: for the directory that
stores cached information such as the HTTP cache and favicons
(available since KDE 3.0)

&dhpackage; will create the first two
resources in directories under /tmp (or
KDETMP if defined in the environment) and will use
/var/tmp (or KDEVARTMP if
defined in the environment) for the cache
resource (in order to survive system reboots). The temporary
directories created for resources are usually of the form
RESOURCE-USERNAME. The name might vary if
those filenames already exist and do not belong to the user for
which &dhpackage; is run, a temporary (unique)
name will be used if possible to prevent temporary symlink
attacks.

&dhpackage; is usually called by the
startkde script.

EXIT VALUES

&dhpackage; will return 0 if it can
create the resource and symlink to it, or if the resource already
exists and is properly symlinked it will return 1 if it cannot
create the link or if the symlink is pointing to an incorrect
location.

Bug#292084: kdelibs: Useless manpages with no useful content

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
Package: kdelibs
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Priority: normal

Many utilities and scripts provided in kdelibs have useless manpages which
just say "written by bla and bla and covered under the GFDL license":

grep -l "fixme" debian/man/* | wc -l
22
kdelibs-3.3.2$ ls -la debian/man/* | wc -l
48

I understand that the template manpages might be useful from a package
maintainer perspective but I rather not have those manpages installed at
all until they are written. Also, not installing them would also highlight
this issue (lintian warning) to people that might come and help writting
some of the missing manpages.

Bug#127677: Business Request

Johannesburg, South Africa
Tel: 27-83-996-0313
Fax: 27-11-507-5066
Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ATTN CEO / PRESIDENT
Business Request
We want to transfer to overseas (22.8MUSD) Twenty-two million eight hundred
thousand united states dollars) from a Bank in South Africa, I want to ask
you to quietly look for a reliable and honest person who will be capable and
fit to provide either an existing bank account or to set up a new bank a/c
immediately to receive this money, even an empty a/c can serve to receive
this money, as long as you will remain honest to me till the end of this
important business; trusting in you and believing in God that you will never
let me down either now or in future.

I am Mr. Alfred Phoogu, the Auditor General of a bank in South Africa,
during the course of our auditing I discovered a floating fund in an account
opened in the bank in 1995 and since 1998 nobody has operated on this
account again, after going through some old files in the records I
discovered that the owner of the account died without a [heir] hence the
money is floating and if I do not remit this money out urgently it will be
forfeited for nothing. The owner of this account is Mr. Frankline Sullivan,
a foreigner, and a sailor, and he died, since 1998. And no other person
knows about this account or any thing concerning it, the account has no
other beneficiary and my investigation proved to me as well that Frankline
Sullivan until his death was the manager Sulliv Coy.(pty). South Africa.

I am only contacting you as a foreigner because this money can not be
approved to a local person here, without valid international foreign
passport, but can only be approved to any foreigner with valid international
passport or driver’s license and foreign a/c because the money is in us
dollars and the former owner of the a/c Mr. Frankline Sullivan is a
foreigner too, [and the money can only be approved into a foreign a/c.] I
need your full co-operation to make this work fine. Because the ministry of
finance is ready to approve this payment to any foreigner who has correct
information of this account, which I will give to you, upon your positive
response and once I am convinced that you are capable and will meet up with
instruction of a key bank official who is deeply involved with us in this
business.

Apparently I need your strong assurance that you will never, never let me
down with my influence and the position of the bank officials we can
transfer this money to your reliable account which you will provide with
assurance that this money will be intact pending our physical arrival in
your country for sharing. The bank official will destroy all documents of
transaction immediately we receive this money leaving no trace to any place.
I will use my position and influence to obtain all legal approvals for
onward transfer of this money to your account with appropriate clearance
from the relevant ministries and foreign exchange departments and to build
confidence you can travel to Johannesburg South Africa immediately to
discuss with me face to face after which I will make this remittance in your
presence and three of us will fly to your country at least two days ahead of
the money going into the account.

At the conclusion of this business, you will be given 35% of the total
amount, 60% will be for us, while 5% will be for expenses both parties might
have incurred during the process of transferring.

Waiting unalloyed for your response.

You are right. I had the line:

'(gnuserv-program (concat exec-directory "/gnuserv"))

In my (custom-set-variables ...) form.

I suspect that this is the culprit. It must be stale config from
another life, as I haven't used customize for a very long time...
Thanks for your patience.

Bug#291822: /var/log/polipo should be 755

2005-01-24 Thread Juliusz Chroboczek
(I'm the upstream author.)

> Instead could you change the permissions of the logfile to be 0640
> and keep the directory as 755.

That's a good idea. But it's surprisingly tricky to implement.

The log file is created by Polipo, so it's Polipo itself that should
set the permissions. But Polipo uses fopen to create the log file,
which doesn't take permissions.

I cannot create and then open the log file, as that would cause a race
condition (the file could be deleted by whoever is rotating the logs
between the two). I could fopen and then chmod, but that would cause
a race condition (someone could read the log file if he got the timing
just right).

It looks like the right solution is to create the file and then use
fdopen. But I'll need to check if fdopen is available on all the
systems that I support.

Tom, you're welcome to mark this bug upstream.

Juliusz

Bug#292078: kdebase: startkde does not check lnusertemp's result?

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
Package: ksmserver
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Priority: normal
Tags: security

The default startkde script provided with KDE does not seem to check any
exit values for lnusertemp:

165 # Link "tmp" resource to directory in /tmp
166 # Creates a directory /tmp/kde-$USER and links $KDEHOME/tmp-$HOSTNAME
to166 it.
167 lnusertemp tmp >/dev/null
168
169 # Link "socket" resource to directory in /tmp
170 # Creates a directory /tmp/ksocket-$USER and links
$KDEHOME/socket-$HOST170 NAME to it.
171 lnusertemp socket >/dev/null
172
173 # Link "cache" resource to directory in /var/tmp
174 # Creates a directory /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and links
$KDEHOME/cache-$174 HOSTNAME to it.
175 lnusertemp cache >/dev/null

There are several reasons this is not correct, the most important being
that if /tmp (or /var/tmp) are full and lnusertemp cannot do it's job
(create a directory there), the startkde will happily keep on working even
though the needed symlinks are not going to be there.

IMHO the exit status of all of these actions should be tested, how about
the attached patch to improve over the existing script? (it also includes a
useful comment on how to prevent user files from ending up in /tmp or
/var/tmp since KDE does not honor $TMPDIR)

Regards

Javier
