Bug#284947: mozilla-thunderbird: please re open bug: also problems with 8bit.

2005-03-21 Thread Alexander Sack
Please try to setup your X locales properly. First install the 'locales'
package. if that is installed use dpkg-reconfigure locales to configure your
wanted locales and don't forget to relogin afterwards, so your changes apply.

if you have done so, 'locale' should not list POSIX as your language anymore.

BTW, the bug was never closed, but just tagged unreproducible.

Bug#300841: uptimed: Documentation contains outdated email and webpage addresses

2005-03-21 Thread ADFH
Package: uptimed
Version: 1:0.3.3-2.2
Severity: minor

unixcode.org mentioned in /usr/share/doc/uptimed appears to have been
taken down by its owner. Where, if anywhere, does upstream exist now?

Perhaps the /usr/share/doc information needs to be updated or removed?

I acknowledge this is a minor issue - but still one worth attention
eventually.

Bug#300840: openssh-server: please consider setting ClientAliveInterval in the default config

2005-03-21 Thread Marc Haber
Package: openssh-server
Version: 3.9p1-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

please consider setting ClientAliveInterval in the default
configuration. I would like to suggest a ClientAliveInterval of 3600,
and a ClientAliveCountMax of 6, killing all ssh sessions where the
client hasn't replied to a application level "ping" on the application
level.

There are setups where the TCP session stays up while the client is
long gone, for example when the client connects via a firewall setup via

ssh -o"proxycommand ssh bastion socket -q %h %p" host

If the ssh session to the bastion host dies, the socket process won't,
keeping the tcp session up. This situation is not noticed by the ssh
server without application level keepalives.

I think this change would be a good thing for the ssh packages in
experimental since this is the opportunity to get some testing before
the change gets into unstable. Please consider applying it.

This option might, however, interfere suboptimally with older openssh
clients or clients that are not openssh. That's why I would like to
suggest applying to experimental first.

Florian Weimer has been a great help in preparing this wishlist bug
report by answering my questions and pointing out potential breakage.
Thanks!

Greetings
Marc

Bug#300839: libgda: documentation misbuilds due to undefined SGML element

2005-03-21 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: libgda
Version: 0.2.96-6
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Trying to rebuild libgda for bug #299159, I found that the documentation was
failing to build correctly because of the use of an SGML element that is not
part of the DocBook 3.0 spec:

  [...]
  /usr/bin/jade:../libgda-common/libgda-common-docs.sgml:9:46:E: element
"PROGRAMNAME" undefined
  [...]

The attached patch removes the broken tag and allows the documentation to
build correctly instead of silently failing.

This fix will be included in the upcoming NMU for 299159.

This is the 2.6 install, right ?

Can you confirm that 2.4 installs are OK with that machine and D-I
build ?

If so, the problem can easily be circumvented by making a default
install, then upgrade to a 2.6 kernel later (in case the HD detection
works with 2.6 kernels on installed systems).

Steve (Grrenland, cron maintainer), input ?

Javier asked for shadow to be changed to have the PAM configuration
for login to use pam_limits.so and points me to the change he asked
you about this.

shadow (and login) being part of the base system, I'm very
conservative about any change, while we are so close of the release.

So, Steve, do you plan to push this in sarge, or only make the change
in sid?

In any case, I'll also request the advice of the release team...

Bug#300834: python2.3-libxml2: not purgeing cleanly breaks other programs

2005-03-21 Thread Ingo Saitz
Package: python2.3-libxml2
Version: 2.6.16-3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

I installed python2.3-libxml2 as a dependency package and removed it
again sometime later. I also use straw as a rss reader an suddenly it
failed to fetch new data after a restart (see below). But straw was
still working in a clean sid chroot, so I dug...

It seems, python2.3-libxml2 does not bytecompile its files in
/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages on its own, but somehow I got
bytecompiled files (*.pyc and *.pyo for every *.py file), probably due
to a python update which recompiled everything. These files were left
over on the package purge causing straw to hiccup.

Please read the Debian Python Policy, especially "2.5 Modules
Bytecompilation" how to correctly bytecompile and clean up:

Package: bindgraph

there is no /etc/logrotate.d/bind9 or bindgraph at the moment.

it seems that bindgraph is not working too well when log is growing more then

it stopped working when my logfile was about 20MB big or it was a matter of

It is to be preferred because krb4 has inherent flaws that make it little
better than plaintext authentication. Krb4 should only be enabled in
response to specific user demand for compatibility; AFAICT, it was enabled
in evolution only as a result of an accident of the build environment.

However, the package could build-depend on libkrb5-dev instead. Or, it
could drop the build-conflict and build-depend on heimdal-dev, but be fixed
to not enable support for the deprecated, never-standardized krb4 POP
protocol.

That would be a reasonable fix, IMHO.

Yeah, I'm pretty much aware it's totally busted. I was hoping upstream
would be releasing new versions but no luck so far. I'll try to revert
soon if I don't hear anything.

Opps, sorry I left that out - the change was in

Hope that is clear enough.

Bug#295306: debian/uw-imapd-ssl.postinst clobbers existing imaps line params

tags 295306 patch
thanks

Hi Jonas,

This RC bug has been open for a long time now, and there has been no
activity on it for three weeks. I have prepared an NMU with the attached
patch, based on the one prepared by Adeodato and Pierre but without the
intrusive (and currently broken) template-based maintainer scripts. I will
be uploading this to unstable shortly according to the 0-day NMU policy.

Thanks,

Bug#300832: Closing Kpat causes a loss to be added to stats

2005-03-21 Thread Kelly Albrecht
Package: kpat
Version: 2.2.2

Closing Kpat causes a loss to be added to stats. This is a problem because if
you only play one game at a time, and then close kpat after each game, even
if you win evertime, you will never get above a 50% in the statistics.

For example, I open Kpat, I play Freecell, I win, (a win gets added to the
statistics), I close Kpat, ( a loss is added), when I open Kpat the next time
I have one win and one loss, not fair.

Also, If, say, I open Kpat on accident and then close it, a loss is added.

In short, losses are being added when games are not lost.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, kernel 2.6.10, kde 3.4.0

Thanks in advance,
Kelly Albrecht

Bug#300831: mueller7accent-dict: Phonetic Transcription to display correct UTF8 for mueller dict packages

2005-03-21 Thread Chris Donoghue
Subject: mueller7accent-dict: Phonetic Transcription to display correct UTF8
for mueller dict packages
Package: mueller7accent-dict
Version: 2002.02.27-3.2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***
This could also be considered as extension of bug #92351 and is probably
just a wishlist.

The phonetic transcription of some words do not display correctly.

e.g.

  dog
 [dâg]
 1. _n.
1: ÑÐ, ÐÑÑ; Greater (lesser) Dog ..

Should display:

  dog
 [dÉg]
 1. _n.
1: ÑÐ, ÐÑÑ; Greater (lesser) Dog ..

In fact even some trascriptions are deleted in the to-dict.sh script.

e.g.

  bread
 1. _n.
1: ÑÐÐÐ; _ÐÐÑÐÐ. ÐÑÑÐÐ Ñ

Whereas keeping the phonetic transcription would display (by simply
removing the --no-trans section from the debian/rules file)

  bread
 [bred]
 1. _n.
1: ÑÐÐÐ; _ÐÐÑÐÐ. ÐÑÑÐÐ Ñ

Included is a patch to go against the debian patched source.

Added is a perl script that Fixes the phonetic transcriptions by
modifying the incorrect UTF8 bytes and rewriting them as their
(hopefully) correct IPA UTF8 counterpart.

This is more a "completeness" issue so that transcriptions
are in fact displayed correctly.

Not sure if keeping the transcriptions will break any required dict
format. Also there will be the additional requirement of needing perl
to build successfully. It should work for any perl version 5.6 and up.

Hopefully someone might find this useful.

Thanks

Chris Donoghue

When upgrading machines from woody to the current sarge snapshot the
change in pipe_decode setting breaks spam processing scripts. The upstream
binary does not set pipe_decode and the woody version did not either. But
the current sarge snapshot sets pipe_decode in /etc/Muttrc. Please remove
this setting as this breaks many scripts for users.

This is true. But while there is no hard separation, the
privileges granted to group staff are not coincident to the
privileges granted to the super user; though there is an overlap that
 can lead to escalation.

While you can't use group staff to create a second teir group
of humans with some, but not all, rights of the group who has root
privileges, you can use to allow people who already have the root
password to perform some tasks while they are not root.

While in a role as group staff, some of the consequences of
actions taken in error (rm -rf $workdir, when -z $workdir, for
example) do not have the consequences that they would ahve were they
forced to work as the super suer. This overlapping, but not
coincident, set of privileges are what makes the group staff useful.

There are all kinds of tools in the admins arsenal, each with
varying degrees of risk; forcing the admin to run as root all the
time reduces, rather than enhances, system security.

Even more directly, sudo and super can be set up to allow
trivial privilege escalations (I mean, that is their _job_). There
are all kinds of tools and mechanisms that can be set up badly; but

Thanks. (Somewhat cumbersome; but you are right.)

Cannot create setuid-root: the filesystem is exported with default
root_squash. Would need to get root on the exporter for that. In my
scenario getting root on any mounter is sufficient.

(I started to think of this, because my boss suggested that we set a
different root password on the exporter, as needing more security than the
various mounters. Most admins would recognize the need to secure the
exporter, but may not realize that root on the mounter also gives it away.)

Yes I noticed your agreement, thanks, and thanks for re-stating it. We seem
to disagree on the urgency only: are there any machines that are currently
affected?

Is non-intuitive tu use different game name than package name, because
one has to look up separately inside package listing what would be
the binary to run.
In the interests of keeping changes to upstream to a minimum, I'm not
inclined to make this change now. As it is, Debian gets too much flak
for diverging from upstream needlessly.

If enough people make this request, I'll reconsider.

Read-only access to kernel memory should be sufficient to obtain passwords,
including the root password or the password of a root-equivalent user.

Attacker gets root on one machine, creates setuid root binary, gets root on
all.

I have already said that I support the removal of these privileges from the

Bug#300827: soap4r: builds old version of libsoap-ruby1.8

2005-03-21 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: soap4r
Version: 1.4.8-3
Severity: serious

The current version of soap4r builds binaries for libsoap-ruby1.8, but this
binary has been superseded by a newer version in ruby1.8 -- which has
recently been integrated completely into the libruby1.8 package.

This means that the soap4r package, if reuploaded, would apparently attempt
to build an old version of libsoap-ruby1.8 by mistake: a version older than
the last version that was provided by the ruby1.8 package. The soap4r
package should be fixed to not build an outdated package that is no longer
needed.

Thanks,

On my Debian systems, I see:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /dev | grep mem
crw-r-1 root kmem 1, 2 Nov 13 2002 kmem
crw-r-1 root kmem 1, 1 Nov 13 2002 mem
crw-r-1 root kmem 1, 4 Nov 13 2002 port

with read access only. Does that still give you root, or did you (also)
mean that for other systems, where kmem has write access?

Debian policy says that files should be owned by root:root (as distinct
from bin:bin). Was not that designed to avoid such escalation?

NFS-mounted (user) files, mounted writable on several machines; attacker
gets root on one machine, creates setgid-staff binary, gets root on all.
Is not that realistic?

Should not administrators be warned that giving staff privilege is

I've already stated my position on the bug, and I think that this use of the
staff group should be avoided.

The fact, though, is that this is a privilege escalation from the
(documented, but essentially unused) 'staff' group to root. Similar
escalations exist commonly in other systems via, e.g., the 'bin' user/group
which owns binaries in the default PATH. The "kmem" group also leads
trivially to root. But unless the system administrator takes it upon
themselves to give these privileges away, there is no realistic attack
vector, and no justification for alarm.

Are you sure there are no security issues, and absolutely sure there are no
root security holes, lurking in there?

I am tempted to publicize the issue on the BugTraq and FullDisclosure

laughed at; or maybe I am right ...

Just for the record, I rejected all oprofile-source-built kernel module
packages from NEW, so if it stays this way, and the -source package is
useful as is (without those module packages uploaded into the archive),
it's fine as far as I'm concerned.

If you want them in the archive though, yeah, you need to fix the build
system.

I've added an "english" and a "trans" virtual dictionary to the dict.org
and test.dict.org servers. The default is still to show everything --
it demonstrates the fine freedict.org work that I've been remiss in not
showing off sooner.

Please let me know if this solves the usability issues.

| The documents should be somewhere in /usr/share

1) R is a rather large system -- the upstream sources come in at around 10.6
mb for the compressed 2.0.1 release, and 12.4 for the current sources of
the upcoming 2.1.0 release. R is also fairly popular and used by
thousands of people across many different operating systems.

2) On all platforms, R installs all its files below a given directory.
On Unix systems this defaults to /usr/local/lib/R. On Debian, we
use /usr/lib/R for the obvious reasons. It is similar for OS X etc pp.

3) The R Core development team is aware of the issue; I had privately raised
this before. Linux is used as a development platform by a large number
of the R Core developers (and yes, some even use Debian). They know about
the FHS.

4) As I said above, this is a large codebase and satisfying the FHS is a
nice goal in and by itself. Unfortunately, it is without any upside for
the other platforms. Still. I presume that a well-designed patch would
find the consideration of the R developers. But someone needs to write
and test the patch. So far, other priorities were more important. If
you care deeply about this, consider submitting a patch.

5) This is an upstream issue. I do suggest we close it here, and I invite
you to raise and file the issue in the upstream bug archive at
http://bugs.r-project.org

6) I disagree with your assessment of the bug severity.

2005-03-21 Thread Matt Johnston
Package: libpam-modules
Version: 0.76-22

The pam_mail module attempts to perform stat() of the mail location.
If the mail location is NFS mounted and that server is unavailable,
logins as any user (root included) will hang indefinitely (hampering

A solution would probably be alarm(10); before the stat() call in

Actually, I'm grateful for your report, without which I would not have
known about the conflict or contacted Camm (lam maintainer) about this

Thank you, I look forward to resolving this.

Just checking - have you looked into the suggestion made by upstream?
Have you had any further problems with this? Can you provide any
additional information to assist with debugging?

Just a ping, as I'm trying to do some bug cleanup.

Using squash_gids or ugidd would prevent an attacker from creating a
setgid-staff object, thus keeping things safe while there are no users in
group staff. Neither squash_gids nor ugidd would prevent scribbling over
the .bashrc file of, or otherwise trojan, a user in group staff.

I beleive that group staff is pretty useless until you put some users into
that group. Using squash_gids or ugidd we can keep it safe in that default
but useless state; we can not make it safe in the useful state.

Would you agree with the above? (Then we should think about groups disk and
tty also.)

(The problem is not Debian-specific. Only the policy is; am not sure if
other distibutions even have a policy.)

Just checking what the status of this is. Could you let me know if you
have experienced this problem again, or if you are satisfied that it was
hardware related, or if some other outcome has been found?

Just doing some bug cleanup, and wouldn't mind some feedback towards the
disposition of this bug.

I have not upgraded this yet because I need to work more on the upgrade

I will soon, however; I don't want 1.0rc2 in sarge.

Bug#300780: Swatting a very visible bug - # 300780

2005-03-21 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Now that I think about it, lucene-demo-1.4.3.jar has some very useful
programs. It's arguably in a better place now than before. How about
we leave it in the liblucene-java package, and follow the reporter's
suggestion?

"It seems like this should simply require the appropriate versioned
Conflicts/Replaces relationships to be declared."

This is just adding a dependency to make sure liblucene-java-doc <= 1.4.3-2 is
not installed at the same time as the current liblucene-java package. I think
that would solve the problem.

Cheers,
Jeff

Note that, how to fix this problem when you're trapped in:

 * Fix the current problem either (a) or (b):
   (a) Touch /etc/ld.so.nohwcap which has "i686" line.
   (b) Remove /lib/tls, or move /lib/tls to other name.
 * Reinstall new libc6 package. Then install libc6-i686 package.

When you don't install libc6, and you try to install new libc6:

 * invoke: dpkg --force-depends -i libc6_2.3.4-1_i386.deb \
   libc6-i686_2.3.4-1_i386.deb

Bug#300818: aolserver4: Simplified Configuration/Extended functionality/Compatibility

2005-03-21 Thread Georg Lehner
Package: aolserver4
Version: 4.0.10-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello!

I am using aolserver4 since about two/three years in production, and have been
very glad you made these great Debian Package.

This weekend I finally found time to explore and overhaul the whole Aolserver
configuration and developed a configuration system with the following features:

- Multiple Virtual Hosting
- Debian-Policy compatible CGI configuration
- SSL support
- PHP-module simulation
- Database configuration - suitable for OpenACS
- controled startup - Check database operativity before launching aolserver4-nsd
- Only one (1) configuration for launching and configuring aolserver4

The next step is tDAV integration, with which Aolserver on Debian becomes a
serious
competitor to a standard Apache/Apache-SSL installation.

The End-User/Administrator only needs to deal with one configuration file, with
a
reduced set of options.

I would be very glad if you would integrate this configuration system into the
Debian
package, to make all our lives easier and aolserver even more accessible.

The scripts are brend new and there are several issues which have to be
normalized
to comply with Debian Policy.

You can find all of this at http://www.magma.com.ni/sw/aolserver/

Regards,

Jorge-Le'on

Package: java-package
Version: 0.20

Description: Java applets don't work if package "netbase" is not installed. In
this case, any java
applet will show up as a blank box with an red "X" on top left corner.

How to reproduce:
- Create a package with java-package.
- Install the created package.
- Remove package "netbase".
- Using a java enabled web-browser, go to
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
  - Will get "Loading Java Applet Failed..." on status bar.

Proposed fix:
Packages created with java-package should recommend or suggest package
"netbase".

I'm using:
- Kernel 2 2.6.8-2-k7
- libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20

Bug#300816: Broken dependencies means interchange should not be in testing

2005-03-21 Thread Karl Schmidt
Package: interchange
Version: 5.2.0-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

The upstream author emphatically states that Interchange only works with
unthreaded Perl. I've run siege tests on the sample data base and confirmed
that interchange fails with multiple threads. The package states via debconfig
that it requires unthreaded perl, yet there the dependency is for
perl >= 5.6.0-16 which is threaded. This is really a broken dependency as no
 such package exists.

There are indications from the mailing list that interchange requires apache1
(probably due to the threaded mod-perl issues). There is no dependency,
suggests, recommends for < apache 2 yet a configuration script looks for an
 apache1 config file.

The original issue of unthreaded perl goes back almost 2 years (see bug 199718)

Compounding this issue is the fact that there are dependencies in the debian
core packages for the threaded perl package.

Given that to create a workable system in testing requires running apache1,
creating a second unthreaded perl and mod-perl, and extensive editing of the
main program to point at these non existent packages, interchange should not
be in testing, but only unstable at this time.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks.

> If these are merely convenience packages that nothing depends on, it may be
> best to remove them from the archive and just ship the oprofile-source

Hmmm. "Convenience" is an interesting term. Without a kernel module
produced from the source contained in 'oprofile-source', systems
with 2.[24].x kernels will not be able to run the user-space tools
in the package 'oprofile' (2.6 kernels will not have this problem).
However, because 'oprofile' cannot determine which kernel will be
in use when it is run, we decided not to force a "Depends:" on a
'kernel-oprofile-module' in the package so the user has greater
flexibility.

So, I need an opinion, I guess: is it reasonable to make the user
create their own kernel modules in those cases? If they are using
something like 'oprofile,' they had better know what they're doing,
so that's not unreasonable, but it might be inconvenient, and it
affects a (possibly large) subset of all possible users. If it's
not reasonable, I'll leave this bug as is and put together the proper
packaging to build all the various modules from source.

Could you send me the before and after config file? Could you also tell
me which version you upgraded from? I tested both a standard upgrade
from sarge as well as an upgrade from a custom installation (different
user than clamav), and both turned out fine. I'm curious as to what
might have gone wrong with your setup.

It's pretty difficult trying to cover all bases. The shell scripts for
config and postinst start looking like spaghetti.

Bug#299442: osdsh: does not start on powerpc

2005-03-21 Thread Georg Drees
Package: osdsh
Version: 0.7.0-5wjq
Followup-For: Bug #299442

Hallo Joachim!

> have you had a chance to try Wolfram's Package[...]

I tried it now. A few issues arose:
(maybe I should file some of them as separate bugs?)

1) osdsh starts fine, except when called with option
"-m" (with /dev/mixer). Then it just shows the help
and fails to start. ALSA is working, "aumix -d /dev/mixer" too.
osdsh displays volume changes fine without use of the -m option!

2) osdsh's "-p" option is flipped (i686 too). It shows at the top if
you give "0" and at bottom when you pass it "1".

3) osdctl shows it's help screen every time it's called. It's
operating nevertheless.

4) However, there seems to be a mess with colors/styles. When I start
osdsh to show with different font, color and position,
osdctl will work correctly with options -s, -b, -l, and -x.
After turning on -c -t -m (and -a or -p, but they only give
warnings/etc. because of missing (hardware-)support) with osdctl their
messages appear at the default location with default font and color.
Using osdshconfig fixes this IIRC, but IMO one shouldn't _need_ to use
it. (And doing "Try this theme" from osdshconfig, osdsh squeakes:
"#this osdsh theme was created for osdsh-0.6.0" and "No such command"
but seems to apply the styles; not much tested here though)

5) The help screen of osdctl should, instead of:
-b (name, val) display a bar up to val, named "name"
-l (name, val) display a slider at val, named "name"
rather say:
-b name, val display a bar up to val, named "name"
-l name, val display a slider at val, named "name"
(parentheses removed) like it's shown in the man pages. First,
the parentheses will (almost certainly) cause trouble with the
shell and when escaped, the "\(" will make the name uggly ;-)
Also, having to pass two variables in one option-argument seems a bit
counterintuitive, but then it might be a lot of hard work to change
that and it's not so big trouble once one knows how to deal with it.

6) There is a funny "bug" in osdsh when displaying strings via osdctl.
Actually it may as well be a feature ;-)
How to reproduce:

(used '\n' to denote the next line in osdsh-output.
might be faulty since I have to retype it by hand and
printed spaces are so hard to spot ;-)

*)osdctl -s 'Hello world'
->writes "Hello world"
*)osdctl -s 'Hello w'
->"Hello w\nrld"
*)osdctl -s 'Now for something different'
->"Now for something different"
*)osdctl -s 'Abracadabra'
->"Abracadabra\nthing different"
*)osdctl -s 'now watch!'
->"now watch!"
*)osdctl -s 'Hell'
->"Hell\natch!"
*)osdctl -s 'Hello world'
->"Hello world\nthing different"

Why are all these second lines displayed?
Isn't there something wrong?
Because:

*)osdctl -s 'Actually, does it matter?'
->"Actually\ndoes it matter?"
*)osdctl -s 'what, would, you think, of it?'
->"what\nwould,you think, of it?"

Have fun ;-p :-D SCNR
Grüße
Georg
P.S.: I'm happy now, because I really only need osdsh
to display the volume changes.
However, for bug chasing be my guest :-D
(Apparently not so much for hunting but rather searching
if you got them all for good. ;-)

I understand that from a maintainer's point of view, in many cases the
bugs we were targetting at the BSP were 5 days old, it is impossible
for me to acertain at this late of date why bglibs was identified as a
target when it was only a couple days old.

However, from the release manager's point of view, the current policy
is that 0-day NMUs to fix RC bugs are allowed and encouraged until
release. Every day the release manager is deciding not to allow
certain packages into testing because of RC bugs, so the quicker that
these bugs are dealt with, the better. If we waited for every
maintainer to get around to fixing their RC bugs, then there would
never be a release.

So, I agree with you -- this should'nt have been a target, although it
would have been a couple days later, but this is only a special case
scenario due to the ramp-up towards freeze for release.

To the best of my knowledge, the bug report did represent a genuine

I asked during the BSP if a delay queue was protocol and was told that
normally yes this is the procedure, but right now this is not.
Obviously this is the right way to do it and due to the improper
nature of the bug, this situation was incurred, and I apologize for
the problems it has caused.

Bug#300813: showimg: new 0.9.4.1 release available [supports needed libkexif1 (0.2.1) API]

2005-03-21 Thread Achim Bohnet
Package: showimg
Version: 0.9.4.1-0.1
Severity: wishlist

Hi Jean-Michel,

I've prepared an updated showimg deb from upstream 0.9.4-1 tarball.
Hope it's useful. changelog follows. diff.gz. appended.

showimg (0.9.4.1-0.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * NMU (closes: #x)
  * new upstream release
  * control:
  + build-dep: use libkexif1-dev
  + use debhelper >> 4.0.0 because rules uses DH_COMPAT=4
  + recommend kipi-plugins and conflict with kipi-plugins
(<< 0.1+beta2-20) linked against libkexif0
+ recommend khelpcenter for online docbook manual
  + add homepage URL
  + bump standard-version 3.5.8 -> 3.6.1.  Compared with
upgrading-checklist.txt
  * menu: remove obsolete kderemove, quote needs="X11"
  * copyright: add documentation copyright holders and add acopy
of the GFDL
  * manpage:
+ fix arg file, it's not required.
  + add SEE ALSO section
  + bit of cosmetic
  * rules: dh_makeshlibs to generate shlibs and ldconfig run in
p*install/remove scripts
  * showimgapp/main.cpp: Fix kipi homepage URL, s/teeam/team/
  * debian/lintian: suppress shlibs warning. Library only used
by programs delivered with this packages (and no headers are
installed). No pkg is again lintian 'clean'.

It would be nice if you can check it and use it as a base for an
update. I'm really interested in getting a showimg linked against
libkexif into sid. This allows me to fix the broken digikam (#299709)

If your busy in the near feature, let me know what other changes you
want to have implemented before an upload. If you have no time at
all, is a NMU okay?

Thx,
Achim

Bug#300771: zile does not resize on SIGWINCH

2005-03-21 Thread Reuben Thomas
When resizing a terminal window with a zile editing session running inside
it, it'd be really nice if zile reacted to the SIGWINCH signal sent by the
terminal on a resize and resized itself also to fit in the terminal window's
new size.
It's easily possible that there are still bugs in Zile's SIGWINCH
handling, but it's not as simple as this. It works fine for me (now
using 2.0.2 of course, but there's no change to this code since 2.0.1).
If the reporter could give more precise indications of the problem that
would be most helpful.

It was probably deliberate at some point because it might have an issue
with that. If that was the case it's no longer true.

It's a very safe change, actually, I asked this to the cron package
maintainer too (see #300725) and he has no issue changing that package.

OK! That explains why it worked this time then.
I went ahead and just installed libc6 and then libc6-i686 once that

I think we should remove limewire because:

It has unsatisfiable build-dependencies, making it difficult to make a QA
upload
It has been orphaned for 409 days
It has a RC security bug
It has no reverse-dependencies
It was never in a stable release

Bug#232658: Debian Package Situation

I gather xvidcore didn't make it into Debian? I googled/gmaned a bit to
understand why it was rejected, without luck.

I found only -
 * Debian bug #232658
 * The XviD changelog, stating xvidcore wasn't accepted into Debian -
http://www.xvid.org/modules.php?
op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=57
 * This promising thread -
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.general/76094

What's the xvidcore Debian package situation?

Sure, I know that and you know that, but gpg-agent is in it's own
package (gnupg-agent) that doesn't depend on gnupg2. At the very least,
it needs a pointer that says "go install gnupg2 for documentation" or
something. ;)

Ah, OK, I could see why this bug was produced - it's happenned when we
already installed the previous version of libc6-i686 2.3.4.ds1, and we
try to install new libc6 2.3.4.

The problem is /etc/ld.so.nohwcap handling. It's created during
libc6.preinst is invoked, however it's just removed during
libc6.postinst. So new ld-2.3.4 tries to load libc6.so 2.3.2.ds1.

IIRC, the old version of debian glibc handled with this situation
correctly, but the current script seems broken. I'll try to fix it
and put -2 hopefully soon.

My fault; I had openjade1.3 installed in the build env on this sponsored
upload, and gtk-doc does not build-conflict with openjade1.3 which provides
an alternative for /usr/bin/openjade.

The attached patch adds the missing build-conflict. Loïc, given the impact
of this (and the previous) bug, I'm going to go ahead and fix my botched
sponsor upload with an NMU; catch me on IRC or by mail if you have any
concerns with this.

Bug#300703: autofs: Upgrade fails

2005-03-21 Thread Adam Conrad
If you want to solve this bug once and for all, just replace "--exec
$DAEMON" in your stop target with "--name automount" instead. This way,
it will match pidfile and process name, which is about as reliable for
getting the "right process", but won't fail on inode removal.

I'm making this change to the Ubuntu packages for now (as we're on an
older version without the attempted upgrade magic), but you could save
yourself a lot of headaches if you do the same in the Debian package, and
scrap a bunch of the other magic used to work around the disappearing
inode.

Bug#300433: mc change behavior of 'ls'

I've installed your scripts in /tmp/michelle, and the only line I changed
was to add 'HOME=/tmp/michelle' before the 2 ls. When run, your script seems
to behave correctly and always shows me 9 items.

I think that it cannot be a mc bug, because all that mc does is an 'execve'.
One possible explanation is different environment variables (check with
'env') or different shopts.

I think this bug should be reassigned to bash.

Cheers,

   Ludo.

Bug#300808: at-spi: could not load typelib (Accessibility) - missing files?

2005-03-21 Thread Zack Cerza
Package: at-spi
Version: 1.6.2-2
Severity: normal

I apologize; this bug is quite possibly filed against the wrong package.
I'm uncertain about where it belongs.

The following works in some other distros, but not in Debian:
echo "import bonobo; import ORBit, CORBA; ORBit.load_typelib('Accessibility')"
| python
In Debian, the following error is returned:
RuntimeError: could not load typelib

I've been told this is indicative of missing files in the package.

Thanks,
Zack

Yep. That what I remember. ( I have not been the active user of script
these days. )

Good point. Also current script requires not only / but also /usr to be
available at boot time. That is another weak point of this script. I
did not fix this since that required major change in code and I havbe
been focusing on stable release of code I inherited.

Yes, the problem is this second part, which results in binary packages in
the archive that are not built as a result of ./debian/rules binary. This
is non-standard, and in particular complicates the matter of security
support post-release.

If these are merely convenience packages that nothing depends on, it may be
best to remove them from the archive and just ship the oprofile-source
package. If so, please reassign this bug to ftp.debian.org.

You can emulate squash_gids using the ugidd daemon. Just map staff to
nogroup.

In fact, most of your problems can be solved with use of ugidd, and this
is not Debian specific.
