Bug#147462: test package 1.20.1 made but ...

2005-04-22 Thread Peter Samuelson

[Osamu Aoki]
I was successful compiling 1.20.1 into deb packages under sid with few
chenges. (Please not I am not claiming successful packaging)

Thanks, I'll take a look at your work. We're basically waiting on the
sarge release to switch to 1.20.x. This might or might not have been a
good idea in hindsight, given the length of the sarge release.

thanks

I think nfs is included in some later version already. But auto and afs
are still missing.

Actually, autofs is already in -23.
I am not talking about autofs but about auto, which makes the kernel try
to find out the correct fs. This is useful for root fs with ext3. if the
journal is corrupt it tries to mount it as ext2.
I will include afs in -25 but will wait
until -24 moves into testing before uploading it. It's already fixed in
upstream's CVS.

Javier

I've seen this on one of my ultra 5's before they both decieded to die.
I think it's a reoccurance of the silo initrd loading bug (or something
related) that can be worked around by changing the memory configuration.

What memory configuration do you have? What CPU speed? If 4 sticks,
try removing 2. If 2, try moving to the other pair of slots. (Mine
had 4x32M, d-i worked with 2x32M in slots closest to disk. After
install the system booted fine with all 4 sticks.)

Bug#305777: mozilla-firefox: firefox needs to install more plugins by default

2005-04-22 Thread Jason Dorje Short
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0.3-1
Severity: normal

The basic problem is that the typical user finds he needs to install
extra plugins, but these are not intrinsically tied in debian to the
browser package. So either he installs them from sources he finds on
the internet (bad, compared to having a debian package to provide the
plugin) or (only if he is an experienced user) he spends time finding
the right package to provide the plugin within debian.

Particularly at issue are flash and java plugins. There is a solid
flash plugin in debian (swf-player) as well as a not-so-solid flash
plugin (libflash-mozplugin crashed my browser repeatedly) [or maybe I
have these backwards]. With java the problem is worse as Debian can't doesn't
include any java plugins that I can see.

Now, I can't tell you the best way to fix this.

For the flash (and most other) plugins, the best choice would be to add
a recommends entry to the package to recommend installation of the
preferred plugin. Again, the problem is worse for java (and other
proprietary) plugins as there's no good way to provide the plugin within
the debian framework.

Bug#305600: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#305600: login is vulnerable to local pishing attacks

2005-04-22 Thread Christian Perrier

Please explain me how, on a non compromised system, users can replace
the login program with something else.

 Wasn't that only you in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] who claims this? I'm
speaking of a simple childish script kiddy script that you start as a
normal local user *without* root access. I thought you have
misunderstood something because you might have a system in mind with
users you trust. I'm speaking of systems with users you don't trust.

Well, *that* I have got the point. And, well, I don't trust users on
my system.

But how do you expect that the malicious unprivileged user can fake
*other* users by having them use the fake login program. That is my
point. The only way I see for doing this is by replacing the real
login program by the faked one.

OK, as a normal user, I can start a fake login program and have it
mimic the bahaviour of /bin/login.

But, how could I really have other users run it and believe this is the
normal login program? Sending them an email which says Please
run that login program you'll find in my home?

I'm really missing something in your reasoning, here

Bug#299802: failed detecting promise card with 2.4 install on dual xeon

2005-04-22 Thread Anders Lennartsson
Some updates on this bug, which I recommend to be closed, due to lack
of specific information about what happened. Most of it works now.

With the sarge netinstall iso from 2005-04-20 and kernel 2.4.27, the
mainboard IDE drives are detected after reboot (install with root on
scsi raid has never been affected, only secondary partitions on IDE
drives).

However, the IDE disc attached to the Promise card was not properly
detected after reboot though, and it was impossible to open the drive
with for example cfdisk.

The main difference between the previously reported and the 2005-04-20
install is that I did not make any file systems one the IDE drives
during the first phase of the install in the latest install. It might
be that the modules for raid, ide etc are loaded in the wrong order
during reboot for the second phase, if there are complex mounting
patterns such as the ones I tried before with many partitions mounted
at places in the file system.

The slowness I experienced before probably has to do with lacking
irqbalance, with that deamon running the machine is quick again :)

Cheers,
Anders

Bug#305782: /usr/bin/rl: rl does no output error checking

2005-04-22 Thread Zygo Blaxell
Package: randomize-lines
Version: 0.2.3
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/rl

I would expect the following to generate an error message and exit with
status 1 (shell convention for an error):

rl .newsrc /dev/full; echo $?

Instead, rl blithely ignores all the write errors on stdout and exits with
status 0:

$ rl .newsrc  /dev/full; echo $?
0

Of course this makes it difficult to reliably use rl in a shell script where
write errors (e.g. disk full) might occur.

A workaround is to use the 'cat' program in a pipe:

$ rl .newsrc | cat  /dev/full; echo $?
cat: write error: No space left on device
1

however this workaround doesn't cope with read failures on .newsrc, and the
shell code which does cope with that case isn't trivial.

The real fix is to simply check for (and report) errors on read and write
system calls within rl itself.

Bug#305781: libxrandr2: description gives incorrect description of server support

2005-04-22 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libxrandr2
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1

The description states:
As with all X protocol extensions, support for the extension is required in

The XFree86 X server does not yet support the resizing aspects of this

However, the server does indeed support the resizing functionality; it
doesn't support the rotation or reflection functionality. I suggest
changing the last sentence to either The XFree86 X server does not yet
support the rotation or reflection functionality of this extension. or
The XFree86 X server only supports the resizing functionality of this

Bug#305783: fai: Including resolvconf (recommended by postfix) breaks FAI

2005-04-22 Thread Ognyan Kulev
Package: fai
Version: 2.8
Severity: normal

Instead of exim4, I decided to use postfix, so in
packages_config/FAIBASE I replaced exim4 with postfix. This led to
errors in FAI and I found that the reason is that resolvconf is
installed. It's recommended by postfix and I don't know why FAI
installs it, although it aptitude, not aptitude -r in
packages_config/FAIBASE.

The problem is that resolvconf replaces /etc/resolv.conf with symbolic
link and this breaks create_resolv_conf.

I recommend packages_config/FAIBASE in sample configurations to
include resolvconf- along with comment that this package leads to
problems.

Bug#305784: rsync-option: fails

2005-04-22 Thread Benjamin Eastep
Package: dirvish
Version: 1.2-1
Severity: normal

when using rsync-option:, the words rsync-option: actually gets written
into the rsync command line. For example:

default.conf:
client: flight.shifting.ca
tree: /etc/
xdev: true
index: gzip
log: gzip
image-default: %Y%m%d
rsync-option: -e 'ssh -p '

leads to the entry in the dirvish log file :

ACTION: rsync -vrltH --delete -pgo --stats -D --numeric-ids -x rsync-option:
-e 'ssh -p '
--exclude-from=/home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20050421/exclude
--link-dest=/home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20040717/tree
flight.shifting.ca:/etc/ /home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20050421/tree

Bug#305765: umount - segfault on not permitted actions

This looks odd, I cannot see the reasons for a) not allowing the umount
 and b) the segmentation fault.

for a) you maybe want to use users instead of user.

Perhaps you can state in your bugreport why it is needed to fix this. What

Strange. When I try to create this it seems to work. I'll show you why I

Bug#305733: Just again: Need to update

You won't break your mozilla, but the old locale just plain won't work.
So it's better that the packages conflict than to pretend everything
is hunky-dory.

I prepared a new package, will upload tonight.

Cheers,

Bug#304665: xmms-wmdiscotux: FTBFS: Missing Build-Depends

2005-04-22 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I wrote:
I've checked that Daniel is correct and that the package built with the

I have reconsidered. The package seems to have no users according to the
popcon.debian.org web site, so I don't think fixing the package is warranted.
Unless the bug gets fixed in a maintainer upload, the open bug can act as a
flag to attract package removal.

Trying to install ia32-libs causes this message:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
 that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs: Depends: lsb-release but it is not installable
 E: Broken packages

Thus, it is not possible to install it.

Then you will have to find out why the lsb-release package is not
installable, which is not the case for the copies of this package present in
the Debian archive proper. This seems to be an amd64-specific problem with
lsb-release.

Bug#305784: rsync-option: fails

2005-04-22 Thread Paul Slootman
On Fri 22 Apr 2005, Benjamin Eastep wrote:

when using rsync-option:, the words rsync-option: actually gets written
into the rsync command line. For example:

 default.conf:
 client: flight.shifting.ca
 tree: /etc/
 xdev: true
 index: gzip
 log: gzip
 image-default: %Y%m%d
 rsync-option: -e 'ssh -p '

From the dirvish.conf manpage:

   rsync-option: (L)

The (L) indicates that this is a list option, meaning that you have to
use the list syntax:

   [...] Options expecting list
must be specified in a multi-line format as shown here where the lines
specifying values are indented by any kind of whitespace even if only
   one value is being specified.

option:
 value1
 value2
 .
 .
 .
 valueN

Each value must be provided on its own line. Any leading and trailing
   whitespace is discarded. [...]

Hence your config should be:

client: flight.shifting.ca
tree: /etc/
xdev: true
index: gzip
log: gzip
image-default: %Y%m%d
rsync-option:
-e 'ssh -p '

However, in this case it would be cleaner to do it as follows:

client: flight.shifting.ca
tree: /etc/
xdev: true
index: gzip
log: gzip
image-default: %Y%m%d
rsh: ssh -p

leads to the entry in the dirvish log file :

ACTION: rsync -vrltH --delete -pgo --stats -D --numeric-ids -x rsync-option:
 -e 'ssh -p '
 --exclude-from=/home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20050421/exclude
 --link-dest=/home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20040717/tree
 flight.shifting.ca:/etc/ /home/backup/fish-debian-etc/20050421/tree

It *is* sloppy that in this case the option is messed up, it should
probably give an error. Upstream is already aware of this.

Bug#305798: gaim: messages pop up *beneath* full-screened Mozilla

2005-04-22 Thread Leszek Koltunski

Package: gaim
Version: 1:1.2.1-1
Severity: important
I have my desktop arranged in the following way: Gaim on screen #3,
Mozilla 1.7.6 ( latest build from Sarge ) on screen #2.
Problem: when I make Mozilla full-screen ( Menu-View-full screen )
Gaim's new messages pop up *beneath* Mozilla's window rather than atop of
it like they should, causing me to overlook them.
I use WindowMaker as a WM ( 0.91.0-7, also the latest build from Sarge
) - maybe it is the source of this bug afterall.

Bug#305801: gs-gpl: Incorrectly renders textures and fails to convert them to PDF

2005-04-22 Thread Ludovic Courtes
Package: gs-gpl
Version: 8.01-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

GPL Ghostscript 8.01 fails to render PostScript textures (a PS feature
doesn't seem to be very widely used), without aborting. However,
`ps2pdf' aborts conversion as soon as it encounters a texture. Previous
versions of GPL Ghostscript did not have this problem.

An example of a PostScript file with textures is the Lout User's Guide,
available in the `lout-doc' package (testing/unstable).

Thanks,
Ludovic.

for me to be able to use a compatible imagerotate() and still enjoy
the wonders of APT (i.e. using libgd2-xpm istead of the bundled GD
which isn't available on debiansystems.)

I guess you mean to hack the php package to have both imagerotate()
and a new imagerotated() use imagerotated() from GD, right? That
sounds sane to me. Please post a diff of your tweak to this bugreport
if/when you get something working.

Well, not exactly. My intension is not to hack any package (php/gd).
What I was thinking was that if users on my server is used to using
imagerotate() in their PHP-code, I must somehow deliver it to them. As I
saw gdImageCopyRotated() was available in libgd2-xpm, I figured I could
use that one instead. The thing is that that function and imagerotate() in
the bundled GD is not the same, which forces me to write a wrapper called
imagerotate() in PHP and say to the users; If you want to use
imagerotate() you have to include this [rotatewrapper.php] file in your
 php-document.

Think globally, please :-)

Such wrapper script might be beneficial to others than your users, so
please post it here as a workaround, until maybe it will be implemented
within the php4-gd module itself some day.

Bug#305807: zope2.7: KeyError in ZRDB.DA

2005-04-22 Thread Jerome Alet
Package: zope2.7
Version: 2.7.5-1
Severity: normal

There's a bug which occurs when BOTH of the following conditions are met :

- Create a ZSQL method of the SELECT type, with NO ARGUMENT.

e.g. : SELECT * FROM mytable;

- Have an SQL database (I use PostgreSQL) in which THERE ARE
SOME DATAS which match the SQL SELECT query defined above.

- Click on the Test tab for the ZSQL query, then on the
  submit button.

The error is in the result rendering code, around line 337 of
Shared/DC/ZRDB/DA.py

Traceback :

Traceback (innermost last):
Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 101, in publish
Module ZPublisher.mapply, line 88, in mapply
  Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 39, in call_object

Module DocumentTemplate.DT_In, line 602, in renderwb
Module DocumentTemplate.DT_Var, line 219, in render
  KeyError: 'query'

The error seems to occur because the query has no parameter (argument)
defined, then the rendering doesn't find the 'query' field.

The error doesn't occur if there's no data which match the SELECT query,
for example with an empty table it works fine.

I wasn't able to exactly understand where to add an hidden and empty
'query' field to the rendered template to quickly fix the problem,
so I can't send a patch. Sorry.

hoping this helps

bye

Hi,
when using script with a command sometimes script fails to capture the
first chars. This came up when i replaced my telnet and ssh commands
with script extended functions like this:

function telnet { script -c telnet $* ~/log/telnet.`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.$$; }
function ssh { script -c ssh $* ~/log/ssh.`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.$$; }

Here is some example - telnet on a non existant host quickly produces a
unable to connect to remote host which sometimes gets lost:

Bug#305823: kprof(GNU/k*BSD): FTBFS: out of date config.sub/config.guess

2005-04-22 Thread Aurelien Jarno
Package: kprof
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

The current version of kprof fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD,
because of outdated config.guess and config.sub.

The versions of config.guess and config.sub in kprof are too
old to correctly support Debian GNU/k*BSD. A version is needed
from this year, which is available in the autotools-dev packages
that are in current sarge, and sid.

You can simply copy them manually, but it can also be done
automatically using the method described in
/usr/share/doc/autotools-dev/README.Debian.gz

It would also be nice if you cans ask upstream to update
config.guess and config.sub in their next release.

Thanks for your cooperation.

My reading of

is that upstream moved ISO10646 fonts at the bottom of the file
because few fonts covered most glyphs.
In your comment, you tell that unifont can be used for these languages.
This package is part of Chinese tasks (from tasksel), but not Japanese
ones. The latter contain several other font packages.

The unifont package will be installed by default in Sarge.

And, most Japaness ttf font packages, like ttf-kochi-gothic and
ttf-kochi-mincho,
support ISO10646 as well, although they seems a little buggy.
(Please visit http://lists.debian.org/debian-i18n/2005/04/msg00122.html
for more details.)

Thus I am quite inclined to change zh_TW.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE as requested,

Thanks!!

On the other hand, Japanese users will most likely have other fonts
installed, so isn't it better to leave ISO10646 at the bottom of
ja_JP.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE?I think that we should try to use ISO10646 fonts if our
locale were
UTF-8.

I mean, if xx_XX.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE were all correct,
We should be able to launch LC_ALL=xx_XX.UTF-8 xmms in all xx_XX.UTF-8
locale without any problem.

So, I suggest that ISO10646 should be at the top of all
xx_XX.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE.

Bug#304819: spca5xx -- Device driver for USB webcams based on the spca5xx chips

Could someone give us a simple rundown of how we would submit a patch to
the debian kernel sources to add spca5xx support? The spca5xx driver
adds support for a large number of USB cameras. Recently Carlos posted
something about adding support to debian-devel and Jurij suggested we go
here as it is a kernel issue.

Since you contacted the spca5xx developer, and he didn't seem to care about
putting that driver into the main kernel, I do not see the point in trying
to bypass him for that, even for the Debian kernel.

Also I see that the original ITP is from Stephen Birch, please coordinate
your steps with him. I would also keep [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc'ed for the
records in that wnpp bug entry.

As Jurij sugested I would go first for a spca5xx-modules-source package, so
users can build spca5xx-modules packages for the kernel they want, by means
of make-kpkg or directly. A patch package would require rebuilding the whole
kernel, what is usually not desirable, unless some of the kernel files are
being modified. In most cases a modules package can be built out of the
modules-source package just having the appropriate kernel sources package
installed.

The module dir is self contained and smart in that it uses `uname -r`
to determine the kernel headers. So, one can just go into the dir and
type make;make install and spca5xx.ko will automatically be loaded the
 next time the user boots.

And if you want to build the modules for a different kernel?

That said, I have one of these sunplus cameras, I am happy to see that
modules packaged for Debian.

Cheers,

Bug#305829: MySQL does not support IPv6

2005-04-22 Thread Wesley W. Terpstra
Subject: MySQL does not support IPv6
Package: mysql-server
Version: 4.0.24-2
Severity: wishlist

AFAICT, there's no way to run mysql-server on a ipv6 port.

There are some patches available here:
http://www.ngn.euro6ix.org/IPv6/mysql/
... but I can't vouch for them.

Is there no IPv6 support upstream? It seems odd that such an important
open-source server is not ported yet.
