Bug#317264: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#317264: login: Current su breaks pbuilder

2005-07-08 Thread Christian Perrier
Whenever I try to use pbuilder to build a package after upgrading the
  chroot today, I get:

  frobnitz:/tmp/kdenetwork# su -p daniel -- dpkg-source -x
  kdenetwork_3.3.2-6.dsc
/usr/bin/dpkg-source: line 3: my: command not found
/usr/bin/dpkg-source: line 4: my: command not found

This is very likely to be the fix for #276419 which is culprit here.

Other team members, who looks more closely at this?

For the record:

From the #shadow IRC channel, here is Nicolas François (nekral)
analysis:
01:06 nekral hi
01:09 nekral I'm looking at the log and here are clarifications of my thought
01:12 nekral in #276419, we were asked not to concatenate all arguments
before passing them to the shell (or command if -c)
01:15 nekral Another point was asked by 276419-submitter: not to add a -c
argument to the executed shell when no command was provided to su (with -c)
01:16 nekral regarding the first point:
01:16 nekral * the old behavior was not documented (Any arguments supplied
after the username will be passed to the invoked shell)
01:18 nekral * the old behavior differ from current upstream (and probably
from other distribution, upstream using a patch from redhat)
01:19 nekral * applications requiring that the arguments are concatenated
should concatenate themself
01:19 nekral Then regarding the second point:
01:21 nekral * the man page does not indicate that -c is inserted in the
list of arguments provided to the shell
01:24 nekral(thus su - $USERNAME -- -x should work and should execute
a shell in debug mode (the arguments should be [shell, -x] and not
[shell, -c, -x])
01:31 nekral Then, if too many packages relied on the previous behavior, and
if only 276419-submitter push for the applied patch, then a pragmatical approch
could be to revert
01:31 nekral (We can also only revert one of the above points)
01:33 nekral Zugschlus, I don't understand the point about your clamav-data
testing script on debian-volatile
01:34 nekral did it occured with login 4.0.3-36?
01:34 nekral su - $ACCOUNT -c bash works nicely with login 4.0.3-36
01:37 nekral (also, I can't find any reference to su in clamav-data)
07:42 Zugschlus fsck, nekral isn't there
07:43 Zugschlus the testing script is not part of the package

A backported adduser used with an unpatched shadow will fail on adding

So, there is no loss of functionality on backports, which I can live

Bug#317391: htop: renice doesn't work with tagged processes

2005-07-08 Thread A Costa
Package: htop
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: wishlist

'htop' has a handy tag feature, about which the man page says:

   Space
Tag: mark a process. Commands that can operate on multiple processes,
like kill, will then apply over the list of tagged processes, instead
of the currently highlighted one.

...but it doesn't seem to work with the F7 or F8 'renice' keys.

Example: a piggy parent process can spawn many child processes, so to
slow 'em all down a user must laboriously renice them separately.

It would be easier if you could just tag 'em, hit F8 to renice the lot.

Hope this helps...

PS: 'htop' is a lot easier than 'top'.

Bug#303794: ITA: log4cpp -- A C++ library for flexible logging

2005-07-08 Thread Andreas Fester

Hi,

Fathi Boudra wrote:
the project restarted, current version is log4cpp-0.3.5rc2 (dated
2005-06-01)

Only the homepage of the project wasn't updated.
So what should i do ? prepare an updated package or drop it ?

the primary reason for me to package log4cxx instead of ITA log4cpp
was that log4cpp was not actively developed anymore since three years
or so, so I also suggested to replace it with log4cxx (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=303892).

But, if log4cpp is now really active again, I see no reason why
to drop it, instead of having both log4cpp and log4cxx in Debian.
Both of them might have pros and cons, so I suggest to simply keep
them both :-)

Best Regards,

Andreas

 java.net.URLConnection and/or java.net.HttpURLConnection report the

 sends a gzip compressed file.

However, when an InputStream for the content is created with
getInputStream(), the read() and available() methods will only return
uncompressed caracters for the length of the compressed payload. The raw
 data is thus truncated.

Hi Robert,

thanks for your bug report - can you write a small testcase so I can
test it against the kaffe cvs version if it is maybe already solved.

There was a lot of bug fixes on the URL/HTTP stuff the last weeks in
gnu classpath.

If not I will forward the bug report upstream.

Bug#271692: seconding request to include SURFnet-PCA-Root-CA in Debian

2005-07-08 Thread Teun Nijssen
Dear Debian people, dear Ukai San,

I am Teun Nijssen, Security Advisor at Tilburg University, but also
responsible for the SURFnet GPG Keyserver at pgp.surfnet.nl as well
as for operating the SURFnet-PKI. My GPG key has been signed by
Phil Zimmermann (PGP) as well as Werner Koch (GPG).

I wholeheartedly support the Debian efforts of Joos van Baal in
general as well as specifically the inclusion of the
SURFnet-PCA-Root-CA in the Debian distributions.

I second the request to include the SURFnet certificate in the Debian
 ca-certificates package.

(Rationale:

/usr/share/doc/ca-certificates/README.Debian

How certificate will be accepted in ca-certificates package
---

 - submit *GPG signed* bug report to ca-certificate with severity normal.
   the bug report should include
 - description of the CA
 - how to obtain CA cert pem or paste it in the bug report
 - license of the CA certificate
 - fingerprint and/or hash value of the cert
 - get 2 or 3 recommendation (seconded mail) from other people to
   the bug report, GPG signed.
I won't accept if the CA is requested by only one people.

Since that's probably only second to Excel support, not mentionning it leaves

Bug#317397: debian-reference-en: mistake in example script stops 2.6 kernel compilation

2005-07-08 Thread Paolo Marzucco
Package: debian-reference-en
Version: 1.08-3
Severity: normal

In chapter 3.2 Bash configuration, there is a link to several example scripts.
In script _bash_profile there is the following line that sets CDPATH env var:

 CDPATH=$HOME:/usr/share/doc:/usr/local

As it is defined it will break kernel 2.6 compilation with the following error:

   HOSTCC drivers/pci/gen-devlist
   DEVLIST drivers/pci/devlist.h
/bin/sh: line 0: cd: drivers/pci: No such file or directory

 make[2]: *** [drivers/pci/devlist.h] Error 127
 make[1]: *** [drivers/pci] Error 2
 make: *** [drivers] Error 2

The error is repeatable at will.

To avoid this breakage, CDPATH must be defined to look also in the current
directory,
like this:

 CDPATH=.:$HOME:/usr/local:/usr/share/doc

But, if I added another hard disk in master of primary IDE bus, it can found

I think this bug will be important because computer next generation gonna have

Bug#317400: RFA: libextutils-f77-perl -- Simple interface to F77 libs

2005-07-08 Thread Luk Claes
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Package: libextutils-f77-perl
Priority: optional
Section: perl

Maintainer: Debian Perl Group [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Architecture: all
Version: 1.14-3
Depends: perl (= 5.6.0-16)

Size: 13352
MD5sum: 4308333565368c800bb4f7fa068a3ad6
Description: Simple interface to F77 libs
This module tries to figure out how to link C programs with
Fortran subroutines on your system. Basically one must add a list
of Fortran runtime libraries. The problem is their location
and name varies with each OS/compiler combination!
 .
This module tries to implement a simple
'rule-of-thumb' database for various flavours of UNIX systems.
 A simple self-documenting Perl database of knowledge/code
for figuring out how to link for various combinations of OS and
compiler is embedded in the modules Perl code. Please help
save the world by sending database entries for
 your system to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 .
The library list which the module returns
can be explicitly overridden by setting the environment
 variable F77LIBS, e.g.
 .
   % setenv F77LIBS -lfoo -lbar
   % perl Makefile.PL
   ...

Cheers

Luk

Perhaps you want to follow up there. That might be more effective than me

Priority: optional
Section: perl
Installed-Size: 132

Description: perl DBI driver for files and data structures
DBD::AnyData allows you to import almost any type of Perl data structure
into an in-memory table and then use DBI and SQL to access and modify
it. It also allows standard database access to almost any kind of file,
supporting SQL manipulation of the file without converting the file
 out of its native format.
 .
The module allows you to prototype a database without having
an RDBMS system or other database engine and can operate either with or
without creating or reading disk files. If you do use disk files,
they may, in most cases, either be local files or any remote file
 accessible via HTTP or FTP.
 .
The module also supports converting files between any of the supported
formats.

Cheers

If not I'd like to adopt that package.

Current state is as it said; being worked on. I will upload my svn
repository to svn.d.o as soon as I can now; I just have to get the
structure at least vaguely right for creation of .orig.tar.gz files
(these need to include *all* the different CPAN packages which will be
in the main Kwiki package).

Description: perl module for creating XML from a DBI datasource
This module is a simple creator of XML data from DBI datasources. It
allows you to easily extract data from a database, and manipulate
 later using XML::Parser.
 .
Binary data is encoded using UTF-8. This is automatically decoded
 when parsing with XML::Parser.
 .
 The examples need libxml-parser-perl.

Bug#317410: hibernate: fails at initializing the compression transform

2005-07-08 Thread Eric Van Buggenhaut

When hibernating, I get this message:

Software Suspend 2.1.9.5: Initiating a software suspend cycle.

Software Suspend 2.1.9.5: Swapwriter: Signature found.

Suspend2: Failed to initialise the compression transform.
Please include the following information in bug reports:
- SUSPEND core : 2.1.9.5
- Kernel Version : 2.6.12n

According to the authors this is due to /etc/hibernate/hibernate.conf
lacking default configuration regarding compressor and encryptor,
something like

ProcSetting compressor lzf

which is commented out in /etc/hibernate/hibernate.conf

Maybe having it uncommented by default would help ?

Bug#317411: type 4 GnuPG (gpg) key not clear

Obviously, the paragraph talking about type 4 GPG keys is not clear.
Please explain what type 4 means exactly.

Subject: Preferred way to genereate a gpg key?
Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 18:39:43 -0500
To: debian-devel@lists.debian.org

While I was reading Developer's Reference [1], in the part about gpg
keys, it says:

You need a type 4 key for use in Debian Development. Your key length [...]

I supposed that it refers about the gpg --gen-key command, and the
options that result from executing it. Also I remember that, *in the
past*, it was a 4 option which was something about ElGamal sign and
encryption, or something like that. But now, in the Sarge's version of
gpg, there is only option 1,2, and 5.

So, I ask: now what is the preferred way to generete a gpg key to
become a debian developer? The 4 expression, and my interpretation,
in that paragraph is it correct?

Just want to know. And if it is a bug, I hope somebody could change it
to avoid confusion.

Thanks.

Erick.

encryption, or something like that. But now, in the Sarge's version of

You probably want option 1, the default. The type 4 refers to key
version. The only version of key that GnuPG is capable of generating is
version 4, so there should be no problems. The old versions (versions 2
and 3, which are otherwise identical) are generated by PGP 2.3.x and
2.6.x, respectively.

The Elgamal sign and encrypt has been removed from the proposed new
standard, because it is very hard to make secure, and GnuPG made a
mistake in doing so.

So, I ask: now what is the preferred way to generete a gpg key to
become a debian developer? The 4 expression, and my interpretation,

Again, you probably want option 1. Your interpretation is probably very
common, just not correct.

Just want to know. And if it is a bug, I hope somebody could change it
 to avoid confusion.

You are correct; it probably should be fixed.

Furthermore, my suggestion is that if you own a PC or other fast
i386-type machine, that you should use that, as opposed to a PowerPC or
Sparc, because i386s gain entropy faster in my experience, and you need
a lot of entropy. Just a suggestion; it is not required.

Description: perl module for exchanging XML messages between DBI data
sources
This module maintains simple XML templates that describe object
structure. The module is capable of generating SQL statements based
on these templates and executing them against DBI data sources. After
executing the SQL, the package formats the data results into XML
 strings.
 .
Inbound messages can be processed according to the same kind of
templates and the database is updated accordingly. Templates are
capable of defining the SQL operators, plus new SAVE operation which
is basically a combination of SELECT and either INSERT or UPDATE
depending on whether the record was found by the compound key value
 or not.

Bug#317418: rsync --delete option does not work

2005-07-08 Thread Serge van Ginderachter

Package: rsync
Version: 2.6.4-6

rsync does not always honor the --delete* options.
An earlier report of that bug can be found here:

http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2005-April/012335.html

a short analysis here:

http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2005-April/012337.html

and a possible solution here:

http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2005-April/012338.html

As this bug breaks the rsnapshot package feature wise in Sarge - which
is how I found out about it - I put the rsnapshot maintainer in carbon copy.

Bug#317419: rhythmbox: focus on window's panels are unsable from keyboard

2005-07-08 Thread Cosimo Alfarano
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.8.8-13
Severity: wishlist

Sometimes I'd like to use cursors arrows to move along songs.
I've found it's quite impossibile with rhythmbox.

The main scenario is:
I use some playlists. I'd like to select one of them or 'Library',
'Radio' or stuff from 'source' panel.

When I've focus, say, on first item of the list in the panel and I'd like to
select the third one, I should move down two elements, simply pressing
two times arrows (yes, stupid :)).
The problem is that when I move on the second (in general when I change
item), the focus moves to 'song list' panel, or any other panel on
the left, automatically.

It becames impossible to use keyborad to navigate panels and select
playtlist and songs.
I don't really know gnome usability guidelines, but I think at least
focus should move away only if user wants so implicitely or not (in this
case pressing 'enter' on the item).

thanks,
cosimo.

Bug#317421: gringotts: When reorganizing, it is useful to rename entries

2005-07-08 Thread Greg Kochanski
Package: gringotts
Version: 1.2.8+1.2.9pre1-3
Severity: wishlist

It ought to be possible to rename entries. At the moment,
you have to create a new entry, copy and paste, then delete.
That's a lot of work for a fairly common operation.

for whether these bugs should be treated as severity: serious.

Is there anything I can help you? These bugs are open for quite a while
now.

Sightline is a word we use in astronomy a bit. Sightlines is also
valid usage.

Sightliness is something that hadn't even occurred to me, but of
course it means: The state of being sightly; comeliness;
conspicuousness.

Sightliness's ?? I don't think that can be valid?

I have also found that some dictionaries contain metallicity, and
thought I had seen it in /usr/share/dict/words somewhere, but it is
not in the british-large dictionary.

Bug#317424: enemies-of-carlotta: man page has an incorrect separator for the Postfix example

2005-07-08 Thread Kalle Kivimaa

The manual page says as follows:

This is incorrect, as the joe-virtual should have a
main.cf/recipient_delimiter, which defaults to + (in Sarge, at least),
instead of a hyphen.

If you want to _use_ kde, use etch or sarge versions of kde.

If you want to help, you can start by compilig qt-x11-free (without
firebird support ) and x11-xorg from the x strike force svn[1] with gcc4,
and then start compiling kde 3.4 packages with gcc4.

looking on gcc4/kde3.3 bugs may be a wasted effort, unless the same bugs
persist in kde 3.4 as well.

Bug#317425: desktop-file-utils: No binary for desktop-menu-tool

2005-07-08 Thread Justin B Rye
Package: desktop-file-utils
Version: 0.10-1
Severity: normal

 Description: Utilities for .desktop files
Some utilities to make dealing with .desktop files easier:
   * update-desktop-database -- update the desktop-MIME mapping
   * desktop-file-validate -- validate a desktop file
   * desktop-file-install -- install a desktop file, munging en route.
   * desktop-menu-tool -- manipulate a desktop file

You've already had reports about update-desktop-database lacking
a man page, but I don't see anybody mentioning the fact that
desktop-menu-tool has the opposite problem - there's a man page
/usr/share/man/man1/desktop-menu-tool.1.gz, but no binary.

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=desktop-file-utilssearchmode=filelistversion=unstable;

(Free bonus wishlist-level gripe: why are all the binaries in
/usr/bin/, even when they require root privileges and put their man
pages in section 8? Wouldn't update-desktop-database and perhaps
desktop-file-install be more appropriately located in /usr/sbin?)
