This man page isn't from the mon package, it's from the openmosix
package. There's already a bug report about this, #219899. I'll
merges your report with it.

I can't find anything in the developer docs about this subject, but I
see lots of files under /etc which were shipped with such tags intact.
I think there's some value to leaving the tags there.

Shouldn't you be importing these files into your VC system with a switch
which tells it to ignore the tags?

Actually this bug is not apparent _if_ the openoffice.org-gtk-gnome

I'm going to put this particular package, in the greek-desktop task

We brought that to the attention of the pdftex mailing list^1. The
reaction was that using the protruding feature using low level

Bug#301438: New patch for native ppc64 support

Indeed, in the discussions on debian-powerpc some people considered
a native ppc64 port to be uninteresting. However, I think that running a
native ppc64 buildd will be the easiest way to provide 64-bit packages
for biarch installations on powerpc. Additionally, there are some
people who like to run a native 64-bit environment, even if some
utilities may run a little slower (by ~10% according to my own tests)
than their 32-bit counterparts on current hardware.

> If your patch does not have any impact, please send your latest
> version to me.

The attached updated patch adds support for the native pp64
architecture to glibc. It applies to the lastest unstable version
glibc_2.3.5-3.

The main difference to the original patch is that
the new one disables the modified amd64-lib.dpatch for all
architectures except amd64 and ppc64. Otherwise the new powerpc
biarch build, which has been introduced by the latest glibc version,
would fail.

Perhaps the amd64-lib.dpatch file should also be renamed to
amd64+ppc64-lib.dpatch or something like that.

Is there maybe a better way to disable a single patch selectively
for some architectures than the method used in the patch below?

Regards
Andreas Jochens

Summary of changes:

* debian/control.in/main
  - Build-Depend on gcc-3.4 on ppc64
  - add 'libc6-powerpc-dev [ppc64]' to the Build-Depends

* debian/sysdeps/ppc64.mk
  - New file with support for the ppc64 library (nptl only)
and an extra pass for a 32 bit alternative library.

* debian/control.in/powerpc
  - New file with control information for the alternative
32 bit library packages libc6-powerpc and libc-dev-powerpc.

* debian/control.in/libc6
  - Add 'ppc64' to the architecture lists.

* debian/rules.d/control.mk
  - Add 'ppc64' to the architecture lists.
  - Include the new debian/control.in/powerpc file

* debian/rules.d/debhelper.mk
  - Add support for 32 bit alternative library builds.
(This may also be used to build a 32-bit libc6-i386 package on
amd64 at a later stage to make the amd64 toolchain independend
of the somewhat problematic ia32-libs package.)

* debian/amd64-lib.dpatch
  - Treat 'powerpc64' similar to 'x86_64', i.e. use /lib instead of
/lib64 for the native 64 bit library files.
  - Install 32 bit alternative library files in /lib32 instead of /lib.
  - Apply the patch only on amd64 and ppc64 to avoid problems with
the 64-bit ppc64 pass on powerpc (and to also avoid possible
problems with a 64-bit amd64 pass on i386 which may be introduced
later).

I’ve recently started a new book. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It was a
Christmas present, so I will make a point of reading as much as quickly as
possible. I can tell right away that rather than being acclaimed for her
writing talent, Rand is read for her philosophical outlook. While trying to
immerse myself in the world she weaves in the first few pages, I was jolted
back out of her book by one sentence. “This was a place of competence and
power.” Referring to a mid-20th century urban professional building, Rand still
created a timeless image. Why does competence and power, preferably combined in
clean, elegant surroundings, hold relief for me or anyone else? Why do I walk
through the world suppressing feelings that everyone around me is screwing up
the little things that make life work? And that capability and achievement are
so distant. I know I’m not alone – peers, comedians, journalists and other
voices all echo my sentiments – but it doesn’t feel right either.3

Bug#323834: release-notes: changes in filesystem hierarchy since Woody not explained

2005-08-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: release-notes
Version: 3.1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I wanted to upgrade the filesystem hierarchy on my recently dist-upgraded Woody
boxes to match what the default would
be on a clean Sarge install (e.g. cdrom and floppy in /media instead of on
their own in root, etc.) but could not
find any documentation in the release notes that would explain in detail what
the new standard is.

At the very least, a checklist should be provided, so that someone could
manually create the required new folders
that were added to root and could also edit their fstab to follow the new
standard.

Ideally, there would also be a short script to help automate at least part of
the filesystem upgrade.

Package: sl-modem-daemon
Version: 2.9.9d-5

The license for this package looks like the standard 3-clause BSD; why
is it in non-free?

If it is in non-free because of what else is in the source package,
maybe you should split the source packages?

The README.debian says that "one part of the driver source is not
available". Yet the copyright file does not address this, and moreover,
that is for a kernel module -- and this package works fine with the ALSA
drivers.

I don't understand what the problem is presently with sl-modem-daemon.

NACK. It sends an AUTH command, and the other side sees that. If the

No, I disagree - the user set his locale to something other than C for
a *reason*. Recoding things to ASCII is not reasonable fallback
behavior. Debian systems are configured with locales working - the
user has to break it on purpose, as it were.

I think this one should be closed.

When I upgraded dokuwiki, it moved all of my pages (without telling me
anything, surprise!) but it didn't move any of the pages which were
under namespaces - which are kept in directories in the data
directory.

Included is a nieve patch for the postinst which will move all the
files in the data dir when the migration happens.

Bug#323841: xscreensaver: Bad sanity check for DPMS preferences

2005-08-18 Thread Arnaud Giersch
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.21-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

If I want to keep DPMS "standby" and "suspend" modes, but disable
"off" mode, I can do it with xset like this:

  xset dpms 1200 2400 0

With xscreensaver, if I set dpmsOff to 0:00:00, dpmsSuspend is set to
0:00:00 too which is not what I want.

The bug is located in the function stop_the_insanity() of file
"driver/prefs.c". The following patch inverts the checks for the
values dpms_* (in order to chain the corrections), and adds a check
against 0.

Furthermore, I believe that there is a typo in the patch to set the
watchdog timer to 30s (same file, a few lines below). Look a the
closing of the first comment in the following code excerpt:

/* Watchdog timer set to 30s, anything else is too slow to react
   * appropriately on DPMS on battery running laptops (CPU intensive hack
   * keeps running for too long

  p->watchdog_timeout = 3;
  /* p->watchdog_timeout = p->cycle * 0.6;
   * /

I think that it should be like this:

/* Watchdog timer set to 30s, anything else is too slow to react
appropriately on DPMS on battery running laptops (CPU intensive hack
 keeps running for too long).
   */
  p->watchdog_timeout = 3;
  /* p->watchdog_timeout = p->cycle * 0.6;

Bug#323840: fail2ban: fuller documentation would be helpful

2005-08-18 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.5.2-2
Severity: wishlist

Thanks for making this available; I've been wanting something like this.

1. It would be good to include the upstream README.

2. The main page for fail2ban should have "See also" section for the
conf file, and vice-versa. Or you could just delete the latter, since
it's just a pointer to the conf file anyway.

3. Perhaps you should note somewhere (README.Debian) that the handling
of apache is off by default. The setting itself is fine by me.

4. I'm unclear about the length of time over which the indicated
number of failures can occur. At the moment it looks as if it's
infinite, i.e., as long as the log file is around. I assume it's not,
but can't tell how it does work.

Bug#323842: implictly converted pointer

2005-08-18 Thread dann frazier
Package: emifreq-applet
Version: 0.17-2
Tags: patch
Severity: important

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that will cause
your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a pointer is
greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64.

This package uses gnome_about_new() but also defines
GNOME_DISABLE_DEPRECATED which disables the corresponding header
definition.

[1]http://people.debian.org/~dannf/check-implicit-pointer-functions

This patch fixes the problem. You'll of course need to re-run automake
after applying it.

Bug#323845: libapt-pkg-perl: Inacceptable memory usage

2005-08-18 Thread Benjamin Mesing
Package: libapt-pkg-perl
Version: 0.1.17
Severity: normal

Hello,

I've tried to use the AptPkg::Cache to receive information about all packages.
However this leads to a unacceptable grow of the memory usage (I killed
my script, short before it reached 200 MB).

The problem is easily reproducable by patching the apt-cache example:

# diff /usr/share/doc/libapt-pkg-perl/examples/apt-cache apt-cache-example.pl
30c30,35
< for my $pack (@ARGV)
---
> open(FH, "apt-cache pkgnames --no-all-names |");
> my @packages = ;
> chomp(@packages);
> close FH;
>
> for my $pack (@packages)

Running this, you will see the memory growth (make sure to kill the
script in time to avoid destabelizing your system!)

I am not sure if it is appropriate to file a bug, but I considered it to
be useful for tracking this issue.

Please let me know if you can (will) do anything to solve this issue,
with an estimation when you will do it. Currently I am stuck with my own
script due to this issue.

Greetings Ben

Bug#323846: Bug subscribers receive too many bug-closed messages for merged bugs

2005-08-18 Thread Ari Pollak
Package: bugs.debian.org
Severity: minor

Here's the scenario: I subscribed to bugs #323369 and #323282, both
merged with each other and assigned to the udev package. Those bugs get
closed with the following line in udev 0.68-1's changelog:

 + PROGRAM. (Closes: #321276, #323263, #323282, #323369)

Now, I received 4 nearly-identical bug closure e-mails for both bugs I
was subscribed to, making a total of 8 e-mails. I only subscribed to
both bugs once, and I'm not subscribed to the PTS for udev, nor am I a
maintainer for it. Attached are all of the closure messages I received,
in gzipped mbox format for your enjoyment.

What version of dict-de-en did you use before? Maybe that's a hint,
why you have these problems, while dict-de-en 1.4-1 runs without
problems on my system.

> Removing dict-de-en from the dict-server's configuration solves the
> problem. Thus I removed the package - voila, dictd starts up again.

Maybe it's one of these UTF-8 problems we had in the past? What
DICTD_ARGS did you define in /etc/default/dictd? I use

DICTD_ARGS="$DICTD_ARGS --locale=de_DE.UTF-8"

If you don't use an UTF-8 locale here (and have this UTF-8 locale
installed via /etc/locale.gen (you can add new locales by running
"dpkg-reconfigure locales")), you may run into trouble, because
dict-de-en is UTF-8 encoded. Prior to version 1.2-5 dict-de-en was
latin-1 encoded, which caused trouble, because this means that all
dictionaries have to be latin-1 encoded, so UTF-8 may be the better
decision because with UTF-8 we can cover most languages of the world.

Please tell me, whether you can solve the problem by changing
DICTD_ARGS or your locale settings. You do not need to set your
private locale environment to UTF-8 (I personally also stay with
latin1), but dictd has to run in an UTF-8 environment to work correct.
Then you can run dictl(1) instead of dict(1) to convert the UTF-8
output of dict to latin1.

Tscho

In the past, I've focussed my creative energies on generating whole work. A
painting worth framing in my home. An article to be published and read.
Although I kept a journal faithfully for years when I was younger, I got out of
the habit. I'm now missing the valuable catharsis of that activity. Brining it
back in print hasn't been effective. I'm optimistic about engaging with the
eccentric and introspective world of blogging.3

I'm leaving my hometown again. Again for Victoria. This time, packing up my
belongings, I know just how much I'm going to miss my smalltown life. All
around me people, scenery and landmarks trigger the constant carbonation of
memory. And I’m glad. I've been a part of Vernon since 1985. I enjoy seeing
subtle layers of time in the architecture, politics and economy (or lack of) in

| Shouldn't you be importing these files into your VC system with a switch

The "Tagged" lines are something that change from file to file which,
when diffing causes producing output and sometimes conflists, when
the line is updated by the system.

It would be overall cleaner if the distributed /etc files do not
contain any version control information. The motivation is that they
are part of the territory of the system administarator. Minimalism is
better.

Bug#323843: /usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc

2005-08-18 Thread Bob Tanner
/usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc

# The name of debootstrap command.
DEBOOTSTRAP="cdebootstrap"

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/pbuilder states you need

debootstrap >= 0.2.29
or cdebootstrap

I have debootstrap-0.3.1.5 installed and it does not contain a program called
cdebootstrap.

# dpkg -L debootstrap | grep cdeboot

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelist&word=debootstrap&version=unstable&arch=all

Doesn't show a cdebootstrap either.

I believe pbuilder (0.129) should require cdebootstrap in the control file.

Bug#323848: libglib2.0-0: Documentation of g_get_home_dir erroneously says it returns the user's home dir.

2005-08-18 Thread Bernhard R. Link
Package: libglib2.0-0
Version: 2.6.4-1
Severity: minor

The documentation for g_get_home_dir specifies:

| G_CONST_RETURN gchar* g_get_home_dir(void);
|
| Gets the current user's home directory.
|
| Note that in contrast to traditional Unix tools, this function
| prefers passwd entries over the HOME environment variable.
|
| Returns : the current user's home directory.

Which is obvious self-contradicting, as the home directory is the
content of the HOME environment variable, and the passwd entry is
only one possible initial value (if it exists at all).

As the comment seems to indicate that it does not return the
home directory, it should rather read something like:

Gets the current user's possible initial home directory.

Note that the actual home directory for this program can be
get by reading the HOME environment variable, this is only a
value which was most likely used by the login program to
initial set it.

Returns : the current user's most likely initial home directory.

Bug#323850: sed: In-place editing (-i flag) breaks symlinks

2005-08-18 Thread Kevin B. McCarty
Package: sed
Version: 4.1.2-8
Severity: normal

Hello,

If I use sed -i to attempt to operate on a symlink in place, sed breaks
the symlink and creates a new file. I believe it should instead follow the
symlink and edit the target file in place. After all, the man page
says:

   -i[SUFFIX], --in-place[=SUFFIX]

edit files in place (makes backup if extension supplied)

This is what currently happens:

benjo[16]:~% echo foo > a
benjo[17]:~% ln -s a b
benjo[18]:~% sed -i s/foo/bar/ b
benjo[19]:~% ls -l a b
-rw-r--r-- 1 kmccarty kmccarty 4 2005-08-18 16:33 a
-rw-r--r-- 1 kmccarty kmccarty 4 2005-08-18 16:33 b
benjo[20]:~% cat a b
foo
bar

In my opinion the correct output after the sed command should be as
follows:

benjo[19]:~% ls -l a b
-rw-r--r-- 1 kmccarty kmccarty 4 2005-08-18 16:33 a
lrwxrwxrwx  1 kmccarty kmccarty 4 2005-08-18 16:33 b -> a

I like people watching. Unfortunately, sometimes they look back. Unhappy,
lonely, poor, disabled, mentally ill or just dissatisfied with a life too
ordinary. Many people stare back. Screaming inside, knowing that nobody cares
or will even listen beyond the 9-5 walls of offices, schools, retail stores and
restaurants. Sometimes they let it go out loud in stoned, drunken, frustrated,
deluded, helpless moments that couldn't be suppressed by North American

Seph,
The make-jpkg utility does not allow you to run as root by design;
if you are having trouble running under fakeroot, it sounds like you
have a problem outside java-package. What errors are you experiencing
when you run make-jpkg with fakeroot under your normal non-root account
as intended? Executing the following command should result in a
successful execution:

# fakeroot make-jpkg j2sdk-1_4_2_09-linux-i586.bin

Bug#323851: manpages-dev: getpwnam.3 manpage should clarify the scope of pw_dir

2005-08-18 Thread Bernhard R. Link
Package: manpages-dev
Version: 1.70-1

The getpwnam.3 manpages may confuse people to believe the pw_dir entry

not reading the referenced passwd(5) stating:

The home directory field provides the name of the initial working
directory. Login uses this information to set the value of the HOME

I am back to work today and compared to yesterday 100 percent better. I came in
yesterday feeling a little sick to my stomach but just put it off to sour
stomach thinking nothing about it, I mean I have worked with worse. As the day
progressed I noticed my head was hurting more and more, then the lights were
getting brighter, at one point I must have looked like the hunchback of Notre
dame. I had several of my counter parts coming over concerned about how I was
feeling. Several of the folks I have worked with have learned the look on my
face and knew what was happening. Now don't get me wrong I have worked through
many a migraine and was going to work through this one. This migraine had a
different idea though, this was going to be one of those that sideline me. I
felt it welling up in my stomach and ran to the bathroom to worship the ole
porcelain crown. I came back after a few minutes and a quick mouthwash back to
the desk. My compadre ask what happened so I told her and I was promptly
ordered home. After checking out with the bosses and making sure there would be
no trouble for her to stay on my shift I left. I took much longer to get home
then normal due to the fact that I stopped a few times to holler for Ralph! I
walked into the house and straight to the bedroom where it was Dark and aid
down when my stomach had settled down some I took my meds and was out for a
little while. Now if you are one of the lucky ones that do not suffer from
migraines the only thing I can think of to let you know the pain that one can
feel from it is to take your little toe and close it in a vice till it is the
equivalent of mashed taters. Folks having migraines at time lose all track of
what they are doing, they have been known to put their heads through walls and
more trying to get rid of the pain. While the best known cure on the market is
a product called Imatrex, I am one of the few that are allergic to it. I have
to use other measures and if I do not want to take narcotics like then I must
suffer through it. One of the bad thinks is you get sensitive to light then any
movement makes you nauseous, any noise sounds are magnified ten fold. All you
want to do is get in a dark corner away from the world and hide. Now the next
day when you wake up especially when you have had a rough one like last night
you fell almost hung over, really groggy. I woke thought and felt much better
(then I did yesterday) and yes hung over I came to work and had a fairly normal
day here at the ole station. 3

[gxine bugs cleanup]

Is your gxine+xinerama problem still present?

You'll want to make sure that you're using 0.4.1 or later, although I'd
prefer that you try the current release version and CVS HEAD as well as
0.4.1. I did have a play with the code some time ago wrt this problem, but I
don't recall seeing anything amiss.

Hmm. I purged the packages, deleted the cached .debs, and re-installed,
and now everything looks to be as it should be. I'm not sure what had
happened there. I think I had version -2 of the .deb and then upgraded
it to -5, but I don't remember for sure.

Everything seems to be working now, so I guess you can close this bug.

Bug#323853: hotplug's debconf dialog should mention STATIC_MODULE_LIST deprecated

2005-08-18 Thread Tobias Klauser

When configuring hotplug with debconf, the user is prompted to specify some
modules to be preloaded. The modules selected there are written into the
STATIC_MODULE_LIST variable /etc/default/hotplug. In the beforementioned file
there is a comment about the variable to be deprecated. I think the debconf

Bug#147532: Patch for making esd work with multiple parallel users

2005-08-18 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

I patched esound to work with several parallel instances, so that
several logged in users can get sound:

 esound (0.2.36-1ubuntu4) breezy; urgency=low
 .
   * Make esd work for several users in parallel (Ubuntu #3671, Debian
 #147532):
 - util.c, esd_get_socket_dirname(): Append the user id to the socket
name so that socket names for multiple users don't collide.
 - esd.conf: Add default option "-as 5" to release the soundcard after 5
seconds of inactivity. That way, other users can actually use it, too.
   * util.c, esd_get_socket_dirname(): Some code cleanup to fix some potential
 crashers.

You can get the Ubuntu patch at

  http://patches.ubuntu.com/patches/esound.multiuser.diff

BTW, Ryan, do you consider to add a proper patch system to esound? The
package is already quite messy, and it won't get better...

Thanks for considering and have a nice day!

The bug in question is that, in spite of trying to pass
--disable-optimized to ./configure, upstream's build scripts still set
OPTIMIZE_I386 which prevents enabling the C version of these functions,
and the source package appears to not have a build-dependency on an
assembler suitable for building the optimized x86 version.

Adding --with-arch=generic to the configure options when building on
i386 looks like it should be enough to fix this problem.

Please don't forget to change the package name for the C++ transition
when uploading, as libbeecrypt6 does export C++ interfaces.

Cheers,

Bug#323856: packagesearch: provide ability to check off packages of interest

2005-08-18 Thread Ross Boylan
Package: packagesearch
Version: 1.2
Severity: wishlist

This is definitely a wishlist item. I'm using packagesearch to
identify possible packages of interest. It would be nice if I could
build up a list of ones that looked good, and then narrow the focus to
just those items.

One way to do this would be to allow me to check lines in the lower
left panel of packages, and then ask the display be limited to them.

Even fancier, the checked list could accumulate across several
different searches (e.g., I think I need to do 2 different searches to
spot all the packages I might want, but then I want to look at
everything I've selected).

Just a thought.

Bug#323855: ITP: opencvs -- OpenBSD CVS implementation with special emphasis in security

* Package name: opencvs
Version : unknown, posible release: 1st Sep
  Upstream Author : Jean-François Brousseau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.opencvs.org/
* License : BSD
Description : OpenBSD CVS implementation with special emphasis in security

OpenCVS is a FREE implementation of the Concurrent Versions System, the
most popular open source revision control software. It can be used as
both client and server for repositories and provides granular access
control over data stored in the repository. It aims to be as compatible
as possible with other CVS implementations, except when particular
features reduce the overall security of the system.

The OpenCVS project was started after discussions regarding the latest
GNU CVS vulnerabilities that came out. Although CVS is widely used, its
development has been mostly stagnant in the last years and many security
issues have popped up, both in the implementation and in the mechanisms.

OpenCVS is primarily developed by Jean-François Brousseau as part of the
OpenBSD Project. The software is freely usable and re-usable by everyone
under a BSD license.

Etch certainly won't support 2.4.18 officially; that will be an
oldstable-1 kernel at the time etch releases. Is it really worth trying
to maintain compatibility with that kernel?

AIUI, glibc 2.3.5 is currently compatible with the sarge and etch 2.4
kernels. That seems sufficient to me; why not just mark glibc in the
preinst as being incompatible with old 2.4 kernels?

My first move to Victoria in 1996 was soul crushing. I was so incredibly alone.
I missed home immediately, deeply. It surprised me that Vernon’s lakes, back
roads, coffee shops and parks were irreplaceable. One of the most sculpted and
entertaining cities in Western Canada offered up a cosmopolitan future and I
didn’t want it. Of course, small-town life went on seamlessly without me. Like
apple seeds in the sun, plazas, highways, multi-arts centres all popped up
while mega stores sprouted out of overgrown fields. 3

1. This is not a serious policy issue (severity: serious) but an
important bug (severity: important).

2. The problem is a syntax error in the "for" list, in which the last
item contains a backslash when it shouldn't.

3. Look at bug # 323854 for a patch/workaround until this is fixed in

Don't misunderstand me, I like video games. I like the palmtop Nintendo I got
for my birthday and the Zelda game I got for Christmas. Because I only own two
games and I have many hobbies and interests, Nintendo gets a mere fraction of
my time. But like any stimulant, some people are bound to become addicted.
Especially those with addictive personalities. Like my boyfriend and the online
role playing game World of Warcraft, similar to the infamous EverQuest. He
plays for hours. Not two or three, but ten or twelve sometimes taking breaks
only when he's at risk of soiling his seat. While I prefer Warcraft over
alcohol as my sweetie's main vice, I can't help feeling like I've still lost
him to an addiction. Most current harm reduction models in drug and alcohol
counselling suggest that instead of removing the behaviour in question, try
doing it less. And to determine the severity or actual existence of an
addiction, assess whether or not it affects the person's ability to work,
socialize, eat, exercise, pay bills - basically their capacity to perform the
daily activities that qualify as necessary. Call it a gut feeling, but I think
that an addition is still present and harmful even if it hasn't destroyed one
or more lives yet. 3

But then nobody contributed a parted patch to make it use the official stuff.

Bug#321140: Acknowledgement (xfce4-panel: All windows move about randomly in sawfish if desktop switcher is clicked)

2005-08-18 Thread Paul Evans
After having updated some packages, I note this bug is no longer
reproducible, clicking to change desktop now works reliably.

I have the same version of xfce4-panel installed as when I reported the
bug.

According to dpkg, I have the following now...

ii libpango1.0-0 1.8.2-1Layout and rendering
of internationalized text
   (was1.8.1-1)

ii libc6 2.3.5-3GNU C Library: Shared
libraries and Timezone data
   (was2.3.2.ds1-22)

All the following have remained the same:

ii libatk1.0-01.10.1-2 The ATK accessibility
toolkit
ii libglib2.0-0 2.6.5-1The GLib library of C
routines
ii libgtk2.0-02.6.8-1The GTK+ graphical
user interface library
ii libice64.3.0.dfsg.1-14Inter-Client Exchange
library
ii libsm6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14X Window System
Session Management library
ii libstartup-notification0 0.8-1 library for program
launch feedback (shared library)
ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14X Window System
protocol client library
ii libxfce4mcs-client-2 4.2.2-1Client library for
Xfce4 configure interface
ii libxfce4mcs-manager-2 4.2.2-1Manager library for
Xfce4 configure interface
ii libxfce4util-1 4.2.2-1Utility functions

ii libxfcegui4-3 4.2.2-1Basic GUI C functions
for Xfce4
ii libxml22.6.20-1 GNOME XML library

ii xlibs 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14X Keyboard Extension
(XKB) configuration data and metapackage
ii zlib1g 1.2.2-4compression library -

I don't have recorded the version of sawfish at the time of the original
bug, but current version is

Bug#147532: Patch for making esd work with multiple parallel users

This breaks third party commercial applications. I have no intention of doing
this. The socket name really can't be changed. (Did you read the changelog
before making this change?)

What might be better for the default Debian permissions setup is to
make the socket for public use by anyone in the audio group. But with
esound properly being killed when a user logs out these days, I don't
really see the need. There's only one sound output device so multiple
esd processes doesn't make any sense. Using -as also opens some nasty
race conditions depending on the exact sound drivers in use.

I have no interest in using any of the various hacks around dpkg's lack of
multiple patch support. dpkg has such support now, but it can't be used with
the archive yet.

Bug#323857: xfce4-panel: Panel buttons with a menu break sawfish if the menu is popped up

2005-08-18 Thread Paul Evans
Package: xfce4-panel
Version: 4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

To reproduce the bug:

 1. Be running sawfish, rather than the default xfwm4
 2. Click the up-arrow of the "Printers" button in the panel

The popup window now appears, as a full Sawfish window, complete with
window decorations. Futhermore, it causes a Sawfish error message box in
the middle of the screen, saying something like:

Bad argument: #, 7378697629, 1

This error message will now not go away... If it is cleared (by clicking
on it), it will re-appear when almost any other window manager function
happens, such as

 * Switching desktops

 * Mapping or unmapping another window to the screen - newly-mapped
windows in normal applications don't get borders drawn, and get
mapped to the fixed +0+0 location at the top-left of the screen.

Simply refocusing from one window to another doesn't cause this message
to appear.

The only way to stop this breakage, is to restart Sawfish by

  pkill sawfish; sawfish &
or
  sawfish-client -f restart

Also relavent, is the version of sawfish:

ii sawfish 1.3+cvs20050222-1 a window manager for X11

I could see in her eyes that she was sizing up just how much of a sinner and
sexual deviant I could potentially be. It makes me sad that this girl feels
that way because statistically, there are likely to be many more of this
persuasion. Rather than thinking, "I'm glad I'm not gay," I'd rather tell
people, "I may not be hate, but it's an insulting way of stating that gays
aren't equal to tell them they can't get married like every other person."3

Perhaps the first socket could be named in the traditional way, and
additional ones named using the uid. This way, non-free applications
continue to work as well as can be expected, and we still solve the problem.

With modern GNOME, it's quite convenient to have multiple users logged in at
the console and switch between them, as in Windows XP, and that is the
scenario that we would like to provide for.

Do you know of a better way to make this work with esd?

This is *very* odd. It works properly here...

Could you attach the contents of ~/.gxine/config to this bug report? Also,
the output from
  ls -l ~/.gxine
may be useful.

Well, yes. This is expected if by "[close]" you mean the close button in the
window frame, although I would expect this to work regardless.

Something about this suggests that clicking on "[close]" is killing the
application rather than telling it that the window has been closed. If this
is what's happening, then the cause is a problem in your desktop environment
- consider reconfiguring it.

If quitting gxine (by pressing Ctrl-Q or using the Quit option in the File
menu) then restarting it still causes the setup dialogue box to be shown then
you have, er, some other problem which you may have to work out for yourself.

Bug#322723: #322723 D-I: 'id route add' fails w/ "Network is unreachable"

2005-08-18 Thread Frans Pop
With help from waldi I have done some additional tests for this issue
yesterday and today. Here are the main results:

- the problem is still there if Sarge's 'ip' is used instead of the
  busybox version
- the problem is still there if the new linux-image-2.6.12-1-386
(2.6.12-5) kernel is used in the installer

- the problem is *gone* if the kernel is compiled with gcc-3.3 from
  linux-source-2.6.12 (2.6.12-5)

- the problem is also gone if 'route add default gw ...' is used instead
of 'ip route add default via ...'; this could be used as a workaround

Cheers,
FJP

Hi James. Thank you for pointing this out. Unstable is currently a
bit ... unstable. It looks like I need to do another upload with
updated dependencies.

Bug#323780: Problem solved... but there's still a bug

2005-08-18 Thread Peter Chubb

I worked out the problem. Even though CUPS had been deinstalled some
time ago, mozilla appeared to be honouring the contents of
/etc/cups/client.conf and hanging while trying to talk to a
non-existent printer.

The bugs then are:
-- timeout too long while trying to talk to a non-existent printer
   queue
-- Honouring obsolete information (possibly a cups or xprint bug:
   --- after
 apt-get remove cupsys-client
I don't expect anything to try using /etc/cups/*

Yes, as I said:

> > What might be better for the default Debian permissions setup is to

With your solution, if the first user leaves anything playing sound (game,
music player, etc) running, additional users won't be able to get any sound.
Also, even with your modified proposal on the socket name, only the first
user to login can use third party applications.

If the socket is available to all of group audio, both of these problems go
away. (Although you still have to hear whatever the first user left playing,
at least your alert sounds will play).

I don't think that addresses all of the issues. If the first user logs out,
it shouldn't cause the second user's apps to have esd yanked out from under
them, they should be able to have independent audio preferences, etc.

That isn't true with dmix.

I'm willing to accept that tradeoff, given that it's more important to me
for free software to be robust than for commercial software to be robust.
It doesn't break it outright, and it still works in the cases where it works
today (with only one user running esd).

Bug#322874: ITP: wlassistant -- Allows you to connect to wireless networks

2005-08-18 Thread Stan Vasilyev
Here is the updated description.

wlassistant - User friendly KDE frontend for wireless network connection

Wireless Assistant is a full-featured KDE application with an intuitive
interface. It scans for wireless access points and displays link quality,
encryption and other useful information. When user wants to connect to a
network, Wireless Assistant opens up its wizards and guides the user through
Wi-Fi settings. After a successful connection is made the settings are
remembered so next time the user won't have to enter them again.

Starting esd as daemon:audio would resolve the first part. Audio preferences
(at least the ones esound offers) are hardware-specific settings, that wouldn't
change per user.

The supplied patch has a comment about how -as is used by default so
that other users can actually use the device. If it's not true with
dmix, then why the change? ALSA (and therefore dmix) aren't setup by
default by d-i, anyways. I've also yet to see dmix do what it claims
to. I'm guessing there's some sort of restriction on using OSS
emulation. While that restriction is there, the user gets
a better "don't need to think about low level sound details"
experience by routing everything through a sound daemon.

The experience for the user in this case is horrible, however. Either the
program refuses to start, or it just doesn't have sound without any sort of
message.

How are you,

A Genuine College Degree in 2 weeks ! 1-206-350-5982 < - ccall n0ww !

Have you ever thought that the only thing stopping you from a great job and
better pay was a few letters behind your name?

Well now you can get them!

BA   BSc     MAMScMBA   PhD

Within 2 weeks!  No Study Required! 100% Verifiable!

These are real, genuine non accredited degrees that include Bachelors, Masters
and Doctorate degrees.

They are verifiable and student records and transcripts are also available.

This little known secret has been kept quiet for years.  The opportunity exists
due to a legal loophole allowing some established colleges to award degrees at
their discretion.

With all of the attention that this news has been generating, I wouldn't be
surprised to see this loophole closed very soon.  Order yours today.  Just call
the number below.  You'll thank me later.

Breaking news at the lat minute always get aggravating, your ready to go home
and then Wham, you get hit somewhere breaking news and at the late hour it is
never a good story. You find your self getting a little mad, and mumbling to
yourself, I was about to go home, why is it always so late. Then as you get the
details, you realize that at least you alive, you don;t have a bullet hole in
you or a child missing. I always end up feeling like a vulture waiting to feast
on the anguish of others, but this is my job and everyone out there wants the
news rather it be good or bad and if I am telling it then at least I can
control some of what is seen on the airI have a few Do's and Dont's about
what I will shoot. I will shoot what I need to convey the story, I won't shoot
blood, guts or the grieving family that does nothing for the story, I also won't
go try to interview them, if the family wants to talk they will come to you,
that I can guarantee. I also Won;t use a person just standing around to get a
sot from (Sound on Tape) Most times they are just wanting to be on TV. I am
just glad my bosses feel the same way. 3
