Bug#345497: xserver-xorg: [mga] unresolved symbol in mga_drv.o crashes xserver, leaving the console unusable

2005-12-31 Thread Sebastian Kuhnert
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: important

Hi,

the last update of the xorg packages broke my system. When starting X,
the console blinks briefly and is left blank with a non-blinking cursor
to the upper left. Neither ctrl-alt-f1 nor ctrl-alt-backspace nor chvt 1
work. The xorg.log file (included below) ends far too early and the server
indeed seems to crash. The following lines are from kdm's logfile:

Well, as I actually build debiandoc-sgml-doc, I realized it contained
all ISO character entries. So some fonts did not have palatino gliphs.
(Not just currency.)

So I added footnote to tell uses this side effect. Anyway, not only
PS/PDF but plain text had problem handling these fancy gliphs.

I think it is right decision for teTeX to check font availability but
forcing this way for debiandoc-sgml is practical solution to keep
bug-to-bug compatibility with old debiandoc-sgml.

Thanks.

Bug#265881: Patch for colour output on current date for both ncal and cal.

I've gone with a simpler patch, which I've included below. I think the
important thing to have the date stand out, so I've used reverse video
instead of color, and I've made it non-configurable. If stdout is a TTY,
then the current date is shown in reverse.

Yes, I'd prefer split patches in the future, as it makes it much easier
for me to review them. I'm interested in -3 support for ncal, and other
improvements you have as well.

Thanks for your interest.

Debian AUCTeX maintainer is planning to upload next
release. I was waiting his work. So, I've not uploaded new
preview-latex revision.

O.K. I'll upload next revision in a few days with your patches
to close RC bug, if he won't upload next release.

This information is probably useful to change upstream timezone
maintainer's mind. Do you have actual information of the goverment
statements? If Australian goverment decided to encourage using AEST
instead of EST, it's also useful. If you have one, we should transfer
your information to upstream.

Actually upstream author also considered this ambiguity, and they
finally decided short abbreviated timezone could be conflicted each
other - for example they explained "IST" in their arguments (did you
see australasia file?).

Package: xlibs-data

I get the same problem (overwriting ar from another package).

It seems to have disappeared after rerunning apt-get dist-upgrade
2 or 3 times, with a dpkg --configure --pending initially after
the first halt. Weird.

Bug#345496: Manpage mentions "column"-separated list

2005-12-31 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: xsltproc
Version: 1.1.15-2
Severity: minor

Hello,

about the --path option, the manpage says:

Use the list (separated by space or column) of filesystem paths
specified by paths to load DTDs, entities or documents.

I can't think of a column-separated list: I imagine it's a typo for
colon-separated list, but I haven't checked if this assumption is
correct.

Bye,

Enrico

You are right pressing 'PrintScreen' alone does the
job.

Bug#345494: udev: Udevd isn't started at boot-time, and will only start if called with restart

2005-12-31 Thread Brad Sims
Package: udev
Version: 0.079-1
Severity: important

As udev has replaced hotplug, I need udevd to monitor
usb insertions and the like.

I tried doing /etc/init.d/udev start but that failed, the only
way to get it to start was to do /etc/init.d/udev restart.

That does work but is a bit of a work-around.

I get the same errors with that command line with both 1.5.1.0 and 1.5.2. If
I add the XML declaration to the command line, I get no errors with both:

onsgmls -s declaration/xml.dcl test.xhtml

Can you confirm that you get different results with 1.5.1.0 and 1.5.2?

Bug#345493: ftp.debian.org: Please remove python-wxgui from the archive

2005-12-31 Thread Ramakrishnan Muthukrishnan
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi,

I renamed the binary package python-wxgui to gr-wxgui in the last upload
after consensus from upstream. I also uploaded the renamed package and
is now accepted into the archive. Please remove python-wxgui from the
archive, which is now superceded by the gr-wxgui package.

Thanks
Ramakrishnan

Bug#345491: lists.debian.org: cannot post, unsubscribe fails

2005-12-31 Thread Jens Porup
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: normal

I have tried desperately to unsubscribe to the debian-perl list.
I suspect a bug in mailman.

I repeatedly follow the instructions in the mail headers (and at
the bottom of the email) but I am not unsubscribed, nor do I receive
any correspondence back from the mailman install.

Emailing the listowner also produces no reply.

I have REPEATEDLY tried to do this for more than a month, with no
results, and in deperation I am driven to file a bug report.

The email address I'm subscribed on is [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is
a faked from header, maybe this is the problem, I don't know.
The underlying email account is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you. Jens

Bug#345490: ITP: devio -- correctly read (or write) a region of a block device

2005-12-31 Thread Rod Whitby
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2006-01-01
Severity: wishlist

Package name : devio
Version : 1.1
Upstream Author : John Bowler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
URL : http://devio.sourceforge.net/
License : MIT
Description :

devio is a command line tool designed to read and write data to block
devices. It allows random access to the device. Read and write
operations occur in complete device blocks and are optimised to avoid a
write if the data has not changed.

IO in devio is optimised for reading and writing sections of block
devices. The main consideration is to restrict all accesses to the
device to whole device blocks aligned to a device block boundary.
Standard stdio implementations do the same thing, however this is not
guaranteed by the stdio API. In addition devio performs all write
operations as read-modify-write, with the write only being done if the
modify really changed some data. This is important with flash (MTD)
devices where a write requires an erase and reduces the life of the
flash device.

devio write operations are fully synced, using the fdatasync(2) system
call, and fully checked for error conditions.

The byte reading and formatting support in the devio commands is
intended to facilitate operations where it is necessary to interpret
information contained within the device. This frequently happens during
system bootstrap of embedded systems where the flash memory contains
important configuration data.

Examples of use can be found at
http://devio.sourceforge.net/devio-manual/example.htm

devio is used extensively in the NSLU2-Linux project
(http://www.nslu2-linux.org) to interact safely with the internal flash
memory of a running Linux system. devio will be used in a future NSLU2
Debian kernel package postinst to install the new kernel into the
internal flash memory (which requires prepending some code to set the
machine id correctly, and byteswapping the little-endian arm kernel to
allow it to run from the RedBoot bootloader which sets up the device in
big-endian mode by default.

Bug#337788: kmix volume splash screen stuck on Dell inspiron 8500

2005-12-31 Thread nevinsb
I have the same problem. It occours when I have the DVD drive in on my
inspiron 600m. I am using Gentoo for the OS.
The problem is with Milo. You can stop it in the KDE control panel,
under services. This will fix the problem, but I am not sure what is
causing Milo (Special key detection) to freak out, and think you are
holding the volume knob down. I hope this helps, cause I would really
like to be able to use special keys.

Bug#345489: [PATCH] Add support for spc plugin in EXTRA_PLUGINS

2005-12-31 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: gst-plugins0.8
Version: 0.8.11-3
Tags: patch

The attached patch (also temporarily available at
http://psas.pdx.edu/~josh/gstreamer along with a pre-built deb)
implements support for the spc plugin in EXTRA_PLUGINS. Note that after
applying the patch, you need to re-run "./autogen.sh --noconfigure",
since the patch fixes a bug in configure.ac which led to HAVE_CPU_I386
and the other CPU variables not being set. To build the SPC plugin,
just add "spc" to EXTRA_PLUGINS in debian/rules, run "debian/rules
maint", and then build the package.

The preferred solution would be to always build the spc plugin, rather
than only via EXTRA_PLUGINS; however, this patch at least makes it
relatively easy to create a gstreamer0.8-spc deb.

Bug#344342: [spf-devel] Mail::SPF::Query 1.998

2005-12-31 Thread Julian Mehnle
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

after 20 months, a final release of Mail::SPF::Query, which was the very
first SPF implementation, has come up as version 1.998:

CPAN:
  http://search.cpan.org/dist/Mail-SPF-Query

Subversion repository:
  http://www.openspf.org/source/mail-spf-query-perl (browse)
  http://www.openspf.org/svn/mail-spf-query-perl (access)

1.998 will also soon be uploaded as a Debian package to the Debian archive.

Find the changelog below.

Many thanks to those who contributed to this release, and a great new year
to everyone!

Julian.

-

Changes for 1.998 since 1.997:
x = Changed something significant, or removed a feature
  * = Fixed a bug, or made a minor improvement
+ = Added a feature (in a backwards compatible way)

  Mail::SPF::Query:
x Require Perl 5.6 or better.
x Require URI::Escape module, not URI module.
x Removed obsolete Caller-ID support (closes Debian bugs #337319,
#337500).
x Always use Sys::Hostname::Long. And thus, require Sys::Hostname::Long
to be installed (closes Debian bugs #332952, #342629).
  * Changed local machine hostname macro from "xr" to "r" (closes
rt.cpan.org bug #9744).
x Restrict the number of SPF record lookups to a maximum of 10 (was: 20).
Thanks to Craig Whitmore!
  * Fixes to mechanisms implementation:
* a, mx: Check if domain is a valid FQDN, i.e. ends in ".".
* ip4: Return "unknown" (PermError) if no argument was specified. Also,
don't auto-complete "1.2.3" CIDR specs to "1.2.3.0", as such an
abbreviated syntax is forbidden by the SPF spec anyway.
Thanks to Craig Whitmore!
  * Lots of minor code and documentation fixes/improvements.

  spfd:
  + Added complete POD documentation/man-page.
  * Both "--xxx" and "-xxx" forms of command-line options are now
supported.
x Renamed most of the command-line options:
  --path   => --socket
  --pathuser   => --socket-user
  --pathgroup  => --socket-group
  --pathmode   => --socket-perms
  --setuser=> --set-user
  --setgroup   => --set-group
The old option names are still supported for backwards compatibility.
  * Do not print usage information when neither "--port" nor "--socket" are
specified (i.e. when the default TCP port would just be used). Print a
more specific hint instead.
  * Added "--help" option to print usage information.
  * Some minor code fixes/improvements.

  spfquery:
  + Added complete POD documentation/man-page.
  * Exit with code 0 and do not print usage hint on '-v' (was Debian bug
#237751, has been already resolved in Debian release 1.997-3).
  * Both "--xxx" and "-xxx" forms of command-line options are now
supported. Also, a "-x" (short) form is now supported for the most
important options.
x Renamed the "--max-lookup" option to "--max-lookup-count" to match the
Mail::SPF::Query API. "--max-lookup" is still supported for backwards
compatibility.
  * Added "--mail-from" and "-m" synonyms for the "--sender" option for
consistency with the "--helo" option.
  * Cleaned up the "--help" usage output.
  * Lots of minor code improvements.

  Tests:
  * Some minor tests improvements.
  * Turned test.pl into .t file in t/ directory, so testing output is
parsed (closes rt.cpan.org bug #7748).
  * Plan the correct number of tests, not just the number of non-comment
lines in test data file.

  Debian:
+ Added Debian package control files. This is now also a native Debian
package!

  Miscellaneous:
  x Updated URLs everywhere:
  http://spf.pobox.com-> http://www.openspf.org
  http://www.anarres.org/projects/srs/-> http://www.libsrs2.org
  http://asarian-host.net/srs/sendmailsrs.htm
   -> http://srs-socketmap.info/sendmailsrs.htm
x Point out everywhere the "non-standard"-ness of best guess processing,
trusted forwarder accreditation checking, and several other features.
  * Cleaned up source package file and directory layout:
  Query.pm -> lib/Mail/SPF/Query.pm
  Changes  -> CHANGES
  test.*   -> t/
  spf{d,query} -> bin/
  sample/  -> examples/
  + Added META.yml.
  * postfix-policyd-spf:
* Generate "Received-SPF:" header unless rejecting (fail/Fail) or
  deferring (error/TempError) the message.
* Verbose mode is disabled by default.
Thanks to Arjen de Korte!
x spf.py: Removed, because it was really old, and this is a Perl package,
not a Python one.
  * Did I mention lots of minor code and documentation fixes/improvements?

Right, well, with this backtrace pretty solidly confirms that it's a d4x
bug, not a gtk bug; line 487 of tFtpDownload::get_size is comparing
ADDR.file to D_FILE.name.get(), and the latter returns NULL -- I don't see
how it can be gtk's fault that an internal struct believes a remote ftp
filename is NULL. (The culprit function seems to be
TFtpDownload::ftp_cut_string_list(), fwiw, but I haven't traced through it
to figure out where this NULL value is actually coming from -- I just see
that this seems to be the only function that could be setting it.)

Cheers,

This might be true, though it isn't reflected in the fime that has
passed since this RC bug is opened... nor is it mentioned over there
till now... So I propose to see this NMU as a temporary solution if that
is OK with you?

I've seen exactly the same thing.

However, in my case, the bug only happens when I have Adobe Acrobat
Reader (v7.0.1) open at the same time (Acrobat Reader v5 doesn't cause
nedit to show any problems).

The info for nohup 5.93 says:

Also, `nohup' does not change the scheduling priority of
COMMAND; use `nice' for that, e.g., `nohup nice COMMAND'.

Bug#345488: Patch for dchroot

2005-12-31 Thread Jeff Bailey
Package: dchroot
Severity: wishlist

Hi! I wrote a patch to dchroot to solve one of the annoyances that I
run into often. On a biarch machine (In my case usually amd64 and
i386), I have to remember to run "linux32" to set the personality type
when doing anything that looks at the output from uname -m. With this
patch, dchroot.conf grows a third parameter which lets someone set the
personality type.

Bug#345487: lintian: Add warning when Build-Depend on version number like 1.23-1 (should be 1.23)

2005-12-31 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: lintian
Version: 1.23.14
Severity: wishlist

I've been doing a couple of backports recently, and one error I frequently had
to deal with were Build-Dependencies that include the debian revision number
unnecessarily.
I.e. they depend on somelib (>= 1.23-1) while there never was a 1.23-0
but it is a best practice for backports to use 1.23-0backport1 (so they will be
upgraded when possible)

The check is easy, I guess emitting a warning on any version number ending
in -1 is appropriate. There may be a few cases where this warning is
incorrect (e.g. there was a NMU which introduced a broken .h file, and this
was fixed in the -1 revision by the maintainer) but they're very unlikely
I think.

Bug#330114: URL rewrite causes problems

2005-12-31 Thread Jayen Ashar
After 3 months, I finally figured it out. enabling url rewrite enables
the "Block hotlinked items" options. The list of approved referers
includes only the *hostname* of the gallery by default. My server
config runs on a nonstandard port, so when I added hostname:port to the
list, it worked. The fixed entry in the list of approved referers
should be hostname:port (if the server runs of a port other than port
80).

Maybe send this one upstream?

Damn. Erm, that's quite a bad news, isn't it?

Actually, it was already reported upstream here:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1386310&group_id=40163&atid=427221

It looks like that this problem is caused by soldiers (your own or your
opponent's), that are on their way to the destroyed building and suddenly
lose their destination.

Nothing that I can solve myself, unfortunately.

Bye, Mt.

Hello,

Actually, i got this name from the package epiphany-extensions. In
addition, this package is build for a particular version of epiphany and
doesn't specify it. So should i specify the epiphany version in the
package name ?

Following your request, i have put the package somewhere :
http://velma.mini-dweeb.org/~arnau/deb/epiphany-extension-gwget_0.96-2_i386.deb

I hope it will help. Happy new year ! :)

Bug#345388: libqt4-dev: qmake adds -L/usr/lib

On Fri, 30 Dec 2005, Brian Nelson wrote:

qmake adds -L/usr/lib to (the beginning of) LIBS. This is unneeded, and

I agree it's unneeded, but what problems does it cause?

I was recompiling a package that contains both a library and a program.
When linking the program, "-L/usr/lib" came before "-L../lib" and the
linker tried to link the program against the old version of the library in
/usr/lib.

I believe that -L$QTDIR -lQt* should only appear at the end of LIBS (or
close to the end), and -L$QTDIR only if it is needed; maybe even use
/usr/lib/libQt*.so instead of -L/-l flags, but I am dreaming. At least I

need to be able to add -L flags before -L$QTDIR (maybe that is possible
and I and the author of the package just need to read the doc...).

Bug#345443: heimdal-clients: kinit does not set KRB5CCNAME

kinit can not change the environment of its parent process. This means
as soon as kinit exits, the environment will remain unchanged.

As such you will need to investigate an alternative solution. For
example, setting the KRB5CCNAME environment variable first before
calling kinit.

Bug#345485: hwclock scripts don't support adjust time

2005-12-31 Thread David Lawyer
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.12-10

The init scripts for program, hwclock, have been dysfunctional for
many years regaring use of the --adjust utility. I've filed bug
reports before but the problem was never satisfactorily fixed. Right
now the README just says not to use the adjust capability. So the fix
to using adjust was just saying not to do it instead of fixing the
problem.

But I've been using this feature and it works fine. It compensates
for a fast or slow hardware clock (battery powered) on ones PC. It's
a major feature of the hwclock program and should not just be ignored
because the script hasn't be fixed to handle it correctly.

So at least there is a problem with the documentation in
the README file and /etc/init.c/hwclock.sh:

[snip]
case "$1" in
start)
if [ ! -f /etc/adjtime ]
then
echo "0.0 0 0.0" > /etc/adjtime
fi

# Uncomment the hwclock --adjust line below if you want
# hwclock to try to correct systematic drift errors in the
# Hardware Clock.
#
# WARNING: If you uncomment this option, you must either make
# sure *nothing* changes the Hardware Clock other than
# hwclock --systohc, or you must delete /etc/adjtime
WRONG: hwclock --set --date= ... also makes a calibration just like
--systohc does. Also, the script does --systohc at each shutdown. But
when a --systohc (a calibration) is done, the program assumes that the
sys clock is the correct time, but usually it's not, so there needs to
be a provision to disable the use of --systohc at shutdown in order to
use adjust. To do this I've created HWCLOCKSET for the script and set
it to no. The script does have HWCLOCKACCESS. Setting it to = no
stops all access to the hw clock but access is needed to set the time
from the hw clock each time the PC is powered on.

# every time someone else modifies the Hardware Clock.
#
# Common "vilains" are: ntp, MS Windows, the BIOS Setup
# program.
#
# WARNING: You must remember to invalidate (delete)
# /etc/adjtime if you ever need to set the system clock
# to a very different value and hwclock --adjust is being
# used.
or if you use this file on another computer (such as swapping hard drives).
#
# Please read /usr/share/doc/util-linux/README.Debian.hwclock
# before enablig hwclock --adjust.
#
 hwclock --adjust $GMT $BADYEAR

>From the README: (my comments deliniated by -)
hwclock and Debian:

A Debian installation will, by default, call hwclock --hctosys during system
startup and hwclock --systohc during system shutdown.

To set the date/time of the system, just use the standard UNIX date facilities
(such as date) or any of the advanced timekeeping utilities (ntp, ntpdate,
chrony).

unless you're using --adjust; or unless you're setting the time each
time the PC is powered up.
-
Other methods of setting the clock (such as hwclock) are likely to
cause trouble, do not use them.

Please note that because the shutdown scripts call hwclock --systohc, you
cannot set the clock using hwclock only, as your adjustment will be lost on
the next reboot. THIS MEANS YOU MUST *NOT* FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES IN THE
hwclock(8) MAN PAGE TO SET THE CLOCK DATE/TIME USING A REBOOT UNLESS YOU
EDIT THE SHUTDOWN SCRIPTS.
--
Should a README contradict a man page? No!
-
[snip]
Don't use the hwclock --adjust facility, refer to alternate (and much safer)
programs such as ntp or chrony if you need precision timekeeping.
-
The way I set the hw clock is using hwclock --set --date "13:34:44"
etc. I do this just after I set my wristwatch for the correct time,
using the time supplied by the phone co. (you dial a time recording)
or from the US Gov't time on the Internet. If the adjust time utility
is working OK, it doesn't need to be set often since systematic drift
of the hw clock is automatically compensated for.

So there needs to be a documented option of using the adjust utility
and a variable in the script to set or comment out if one wants to use
it.

Bug#345484: udev: Udev doesn't properly create symlinks for cdrom and dvd drives

2005-12-31 Thread Brad Sims
Package: udev
Version: 0.076-6
Severity: minor

I have a DVD writer on /dev/hdc and a cdrom writer on /dev/hdd.
Symlinks are properly created for /dev/dvd but the symlink for
/dev/cdrom isn't; both /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom point to /dev/hdc.

While this is trivial to fix it, it is annoying.

Mm... that means your gaim doesn't do the same as mine... mine first
tries /usr/local/bin/gnome-load, then the program set with the gconf key
then fails. I actually had a bad configuration before trying to
reproduce this bug today, the gconf key pointing to
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox, which doesn't exist since I upgraded
to firefox, and with that configuration, it just didn't do anything when
trying to "open with browser".

Could you attach here a trace of what gaim does when you try to open an
url ? (strace -f -p `pidof gaim`)

Cheers

Happy new year

So far I've kept the patch simple. But some bells and whistles could be
added.

Current patch generates lines mixed: normal - udeb - normal - udeb - ...
I saw in your original mails that might not be optimal.
I guess it would be quite easy to push udeb lines into an array and add
them all together at the end of processing instead.

Current patch always needs the udeb package name with the parameter. It
would however be quite easy to default to ${libname}-udeb.

Let me know if I should implement this or if you've other suggestions.

Bug#345480: xserver-xorg: vt switch changes console size to COLSx25

2005-12-31 Thread Adam Borowski
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

I use a console size bigger than 80x25, and when I switch vt to a text
console, the kernel's idea (ie, TIOC{S,G}WINSZ) about the console height
gets set to 25, without touching the width. That is, if you use 100x40,
the size will be set to 100x25. Somehow, if X gets killed and restarted,
everything works ok until the next boot. "stty rows 40" helps until the
next switch to X and back, re-running SVGATextMode helps until the next
boot.

This behavior (working ok after X is killed and then restarted) reminds me
of a past bug which happened only with the nvidia-proprietary driver;
however, in that case it was the video mode was changed instead of the
kernel's idea; re-running SVGATextMode didn't help until after killing X
for the first time.

Here, changing display driver (nvidia, nv) doesn't change anything. I
don't have any other non-headless Debian boxes at hand so I can't check
if this happens on different hardware as well.

Setting BorderColor in /etc/TextConfig will affect lines 26..40, filling
them with the border color.

They are from the mime-support package, but I don't know what they do
exactly (the run-mailcap man page doesn't give much information).

I don't know (I haven't checked).

BTW, Foldoc, Gcide and WordNet all say "wrapper" and they don't know
"wrappee". Ditto for Wikipedia.

I have tried them once and the system simply spit out the (boot)

exact moment, just to get the installation going).

James, if you had looked at the other libmail-spf-query-perl bugs in the
Debian bugtracker, you would have noticed that this issue has been filed
twice already.

The issue will be resolved by the next release, which will no longer
support Caller-ID and thus will no longer use LMAP::CID2SPF. Until then,
the error message can be safely ignored.

I started with the Debian pacakged kdmrc, then edited the file by
hand. I tried using the KDE Control Center as you suggested, and that
worked fine. Confused, I looked at the config file it generated, and
saw that it set Lang to he rather than he_IL or he he_IL.UTF-8 (from
the default en_US). I then restored my original kdmrc and put in he
for Lang, and it also worked. Thus, it seems to be a bug (why does
using he_IL rather than he break some of the functionality?), but
perhaps not as serious as I originally thought.

No chroots handy, but it should be easy to test whether setting Lang
to he_IL continues to be a problem in 3.5 as described above.

Thanks,

I think that it would be more important to get out a working version
of AUCTeX >= 11.80 since that already includes preview-latex (upstream
version is at 11.82 at the moment).

As it stands, this NMU is bound to be obsoleted by the next AUCTeX
release, which would be more important to focus on.

Bug#264506: /boot/grub/stage{1,2} not read correctly

2005-12-31 Thread Andrew Vaughan
Package: grub
Version: 0.95+cvs20040624-17
Followup-For: Bug #264506

I've just seen this problem before, but i've just come across it again.

For the benefit of other people struggling with this, IIRC, last time
I worked around this by using a grub-floppy and typing (from the grub prompt)

  grub> root (hd0,4)
  grub> setup (hd0,4)

Background
==
I'm installing a new (larger) hard-disk, and restoring my system from backups.
I'm adding a additional debian partition hda5 (cloned from my sarge install
(hda2)
for upgrading to etch). One debian partition is also moving from hda7 -> hda6.

The system is booted from Knoppix 4.0.2
[EMAIL PROTECTED] uname -a
Linux Knoppix 2.6.12 #2 SMP Tue Aug 9 23:20:52 CEST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

All partitions are formatted ext3
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudo sfdisk -l /dev/hda

Disk /dev/hda: 19457 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

The following procedure worked for hda2 and hda3. (These parttiions where
restored to their previous locations). hda5 and hda6 failed.

Neither re-installing grub nor purging/installing fixes the problem.

Upgrading grub to sid does not fix the problem.

I won't need to fix this for a few days, so if you want more info just ask.

Bug#345475: dpkg-shlibdeps: Please add support for udeb: lines in shlibs files

2005-12-31 Thread Frans Pop
Package: dpkg-dev
Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i

This BR is the formal request to implement the support for parsing an
extra line in shlibs files when determining dependencies for udebs.
This subject has been discussed before on the d-dpkg list [1]. The patch
then proposed still applies cleanly and is attached here.

We (the D-I team) have now tested the implementation and also created the
patches needed in debhelper (see #345471 and #345472) to correctly
generate the udeb: lines in the shlibs files and to use the new -t option
in dpkg-shlibdeps. The changes in dpkg-dev and debhelper together have
been tested and resulted in correct dependencies being generated.

We would appreciate it if a new version of dpkg-dev including this patch
could be uploaded ASAP, as the problems with creating correct
dependencies for udebs currently block us from integrating the building
of the new graphical version of d-i into the official build system.

TIA,
Frans Pop
(D-I release manager)

Bug#328031: Debian Bug #328031, Erlang 10.b.9 compile bug on Debian GNU/Linux SPARC

2005-12-31 Thread Jurij Smakov

On Fri, 30 Dec 2005, Francois-Denis Gonthier wrote:

Hello all

this patch has been sent to me through Debian Bug Tracking system by Jurij
Smakov.

Hi Francois-Denis,

I've done some additional investigation and it appears that the initial
version of my patch might not be the proper fix. The deal is that buildds
are operating in 32-bit mode (this is required to ensure that the
resulting binaries run both on 32- and 64-bit hardware), so uname -m will
actually return 'sparc' and not 'sparc64'. So it will require further work
to figure out the right fix, since even with my current patch erlang is
still likely to fail on buildds.

I'll try to look at it within the next few days.

Best regards,

Bug#345470: sox: Problems detecting output file format

2005-12-31 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: sox
Version: 12.17.9-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

if you look at

~> sox ./vsound8592.au /tmp/v.recordplay.wav
sox: Unknown output file format for '/tmp/v.recordplay.wav': File type
'recordplay.wav' is not known

it becomes clear that sox tries to extract not the right file extension.
Formerly it extracted tke extension beginning with the latest '.' character
instead of trying to obtain the output format from the first '.' character.

Kind regards and thanks for maintaining sox

 Andreas.

Bug#345474: Gives useless error message, then closes

2005-12-31 Thread Carl Fink
Package: nautilus-cd-burner
Version: 2.10.2-2
Severity: important

I installed the nautilus-cd-burner to burn a data DVD. However, when I
start it I get an error dialog reading:

No files selected

You need to copy the files you want to write to disk to the
CD/DVD Creator window. Would you like to open it now?

Close Open CD/DVD Creator

Clicking either button results in closing the program.

This smells to me like a missing dependency on some program called
"CD/DVD Creator", but no such program exists in the Debian Testing
archive. Should be easy to fix in any case.

I'd be glad to provide any other information that would be helpful.

To make it easier to generate correct dependencies for udebs, please

This patch goes together with a separate BR to generate the udeb: lines,
but is filed separately because it depends on implementation of the -t
option in dpkg-dev, which has not happened yet.
debhelper will need a versioned dependency in dpkg-dev for this feature.

Bug#345471: Please add support for generating udeb: lines in shlibs files

2005-12-31 Thread Frans Pop
Package: debhelper
Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i

To make it easier to generate correct dependencies for udebs, please
consider attached patches.

The patches add support for generating extra udeb: lines in shlibs files.
This is controlled by a new argument "--add-udeb" which takes the name of
the udeb package which contains the libs as value.

This BR goes together with a path for dh_shlibdeps that makes use of these
added lines but which is filed separately because it depends on a change
in dpkg-dev. The patches in this BR could be applied now so we could make
a start getting libraries ready for when dpkg-dev adds its support.

Please check the patches for correct implementation.

This web page, which was originally developed as a proof of concept for

Bug#345467: debian-installer: powerpc root disk-image is too big to fit onto a floppy

2005-12-31 Thread Rogério Brito
Package: debian-installer
Severity: important

I intend to (re)install Debian onto a PowerPC OldWorld machine and,
essentially, the only option that I have here is to use floppies.

I was talking with Sven Luther on debian-powerpc and he recommended me
to use the daily builds of debian-installer, but when I visited his page
(p.d.o/~luther/d-i/sid/images/*/powerpc/floppy/), I saw that,
unfortunately, the root disk-image is too big to fit onto a floppy,
unfortunately.

So, this means that I can't actually install Debian on this box, using
both the current installer in sarge (which doesn't boot on oldworlds),
nor the current installer that's being worked on.

I'd really love to have d-i working on ow ppc's.

Thanks, Rogério.

Bug#345466: provide a hook for when paperconf changes

2005-12-31 Thread Stephen Gildea
Package: libpaper
Version: 1.1.14-3
Tags: patch

The libpaper package should provide a hook for other packages to
receive notification when the paper size has been set or changed.

Not all packages can use libpaper as part of their normal run-time
to determine the current paper size. Those that have their own
configuration (e.g., tetex) need to know when the system paper size
has changed, so they can update their own idea of the paper size.

The hook added in the attached patch defines a new directory,
/etc/paper.d, where other packages can place scripts that will be
run when the system paper size is set or changed.

I just tried installing on a Dell Precision 380 using the

Bug#345463: bootchart-view: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException error

2005-12-31 Thread arth
Package: bootchart-view
Version: 0.9-1
Severity: normal

Hi, Firstly, thank you for packaging this program-I'm keen to use it. I don't
think the error I have is what you warned of in the README.Debian
file as I have the unstable kaffe version, and my error says "ClassNotFound"
rather than "UnsupportedClassVersionError" as in bug 336527. I'm
afraid I know little of java, and don't know how to proceed. I've looked for
the error on the net, and found the Debian package
libcommons-cli-java which seems relevant. However I have this installed too,
and it isn't in the required list for bootchart. I've tried several
other java runtime engines, and compiling
bootchart-view myself and get similar errors with all attempts at running it.
The full error is:

This was changed in 4.9.5:

* dh_install: in v5 mode, error out if there are wildcards in the file
list and the wildcards expand to nothing. Done only for v5 as this is a
  behavior change. Closes: #249815

The old behavior was never intended to allow file exclusion; it was just a
bug. I've documented it in the man page now.

There's currently not a way to conditionally install a file with dh_install
except stuff like this:

-dh_install debian/tmp-amd64/usr/lib*/librpcsvc.a* usr/lib64

Agreed. I wanted to start on that before going to the 22c3, but that

Do you know how I can get a list of all potential entries there? I
guess it is (typically?) updated by dh_installmime, right?

/usr/bin/see
/usr/bin/edit
/usr/bin/compose
/usr/bin/print

Can those be the wrapper/wrappee or whatever? Should all programs
just call one of those? Do they?

I just saw Colin's response to your ssh bug btw :-P

I'm missing something here. When I did the upgrade again, I used aptitude in
visual mode. I selected 'U', then 'g'. After I sent you the email, I tried:

sudo dpkg --audit

but, strangely, there were no packages pending configuration. I then tried:

sudo aptitude upgrade

and many X packages plus xlibs-data were upgraded. Now:

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
ii xlibs-data 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 X Window System client data

but the results are even worse: X abends

Please remove gstreamer0.10-misc, it is only in the archive temporarily
(it was removed while gstreamer0.10 was pending approval) and will
 disappear soon.

The only dependency on gstreamer0.10-misc is via gstreamer0.10 which
is fixed in SVN not to suggest this package (hence reassigning the bug
 there).

I have noticed the problem since atleast 2months. The crash after
loading a page containing flash is occasional but if user does any
interaction with the flash (right click, click control buttons, etc.)
Firefox crashes when the user tries to do *any* other action e.g. change
to different tab, close tab, etc.

I checked with a new profile and the problem is not there in my current
profile. I tried with both flashplugin-nonfree and flashplayer-mozilla
and the results are the same: crash.

However, checking for the existence of the problem with a vanilla
Firefox 1.5 (mozilla.org version) and the same plugins does not result
in a crash. Hence it seems that the problem is with some firefox patch
applied by debian.

Comment about the problem by other users can be found in the thread
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2005/12/msg03182.html

HTH,
/ks

2005-12-31 Thread Erich Schubert
Package: libsemanage
Severity: minor

Dependencies on libselinux and libsepol shouldn't contain the debian
revision number, but only the base number.
The best practive for backports is to decrease the version number, so my
backports have version numbers such as 1.28-0sesarge1, when they are
in fact version 1.28-1 with no changes except being built for sarge.

I don't know. I'd say that applications that make sure that one

Uhhm, you're right. What I'd done was:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

and left it installing, unattended.

After hitting the problem, I downgraded everything and, after your email,
upgraded again. There was an error unpacking xlibs-data, but I couldn't
capture it: something to do with not being able to unpack a file because it
also belonged to package xlibs. Here's the weird thing:

grep xlibs-data /var/log/aptitude | tail -1

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

dpkg -l xlibs-data

ii xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System client data

I guess the bug stands then.

Bug#342887: hwclock must run after /usr

2005-12-31 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
Let's go over the way things work, and see how we can fix them back so that
they work correctly. Please bear with me while I go over the entire
problem, and feel free to correct any mistakes I make.

Reading manpage tzset(3) before you read any further is advised.

AFAIK There are ONLY TWO valid modes of early boot operation:

  1. UTC (hardware clock in UTC, UTC=yes)

  2. Non-UTC with TZ set or /etc/localtime in the root filesystem
(hardware clock in local time, UTC=no, system knows timezone)

Anything else is an invalid system configuration, and must be fixed. By
invalid configuration, I mean one where the system UTC clock (which has
nothing to do with the hardware clock) is NOT set to the correct UTC time.

I would bet it is common to find people with invalid configurations, since a
separate /usr is common, TZ is not mentioned at the top of
/etc/init.d/hwclockfirst.sh, and there isn't a way for d-i to set that up
either.

Also, do refer to tzset(3), we would need to use the simplest TZ form, since
it must work without data that is in /usr/share.

It is good to remember that timezones can be changed at will, by any user
(just set TZ) at any time, and also that TZ overrides /etc/localtime so we
don't want to define it system-wide.

What that means? Below are the two valid configurations and what actions
hwclock initscripts should do (doing anything else is probably a big bad
bug ;-) ), and the most common invalid configuration.

(*) are the points where hwclock scripts must take some action.

UTC mode:
  0. Kernel might boot with correct time (if it reads the RTC by itself)
* 1. hwclockfirst sets kernel time to the correct UTC time
  2. system runs with a local timezone (if /etc/localtime is readable)
or with UTC as a timezone
  3. something mounts /usr
  4. System runs with the proper timezone

Early boot runs fine, system thinks timezone is UTC if /usr is not
mounted, or reads timezone from /etc/localtime if it is mounted.
No big deal, as apps use UTC for persitent timekeeping. e2fsck
should not be going bonkers in this case.

hwclock should try to set the system clock only on early boot.

Non-UTC valid config mode, with /usr as a separate partition
  0. kernel boots with wrong time (even if it reads the RTC by itself)
* 1. TZ is set so hwclockfirst sets the kernel time to the correct UTC time
  2. system runs with a local timezone (if /etc/localtime is readable)
or with UTC as a timezone
  3. Something mounts /usr
  4. System runs with the proper timezone

Again, hwclock should try to set the system clock only on early boot.
Notice that TZ must be set only for the hwclockfirst initscript, we don't
want it in the global environment. I'd suggest removing UTC from
/etc/default/rcS, and adding TZ and UCT to a new file,
  /etc/default/timezone.

Non-UTC *valid config* mode, /usr inside the root partition
  0. kernel boots with wrong time (even if it reads the RTC by itself)
  1. /etc/localtime is readable, so everything else runs just like it
 does in UTC mode.

With a valid configuration, hwclockfirst does all the job that doesn't need
a timezone and must run VERY early. hwclock does the jobs that require a
timezone (which is actually just displaying the time in the local timezone
so that the users have a better clue of what's happening, and we don't
increase d-user traffic with RTC problems again).

This means hwclock.sh *must* run after /usr is mounted. That's the only
time we *know* the timezone will be correct, no matter which configuration
is used (including invalid ones -- hwclock after /usr is a *debugging aid*).

What would happen in the typical broken configuration?

Non-UTC, /usr separate, no TZ defined anywhere:
  0. kernel boots with wrong time (even if it reads the RTC by itself)
* 1. hwclock sets the kernel UTC time to the local time in the RTC,
and thus the system clock could be wrong by several hours in either
 direction.
  2. System runs with wrong time. e2fsck can croak, etc.
  3. something mounts /usr
* 4. hwclock runs, and tells the user a completely ludricous time
(timezone applied twice :P) <=== We could fix the mess here, so
if the user doesn't hit a bug (e.g. e2fsck) before, he would not
suffer much from his broken config.

hwclock MUST be run after /usr is mounted to be able to help fix
the mess (well work around it, realy).

Now, there's a bug in that hwclockfirst should bitch to all winds if it
detects an invalid config, currently it just outputs a meek "System clock
was not updated at this time" and bangs out with exit status 1.

There is also a bug in that hwclockfirst must be one of the VERY first
things to be run, AND that hwclock must be run AFTER /etc/localtime is
working well in a typical Debian system. I.e. *after* /usr is mounted.

And there is a third bug which is the lack of easy TZ handling and lack of
documentation. The funny thing is that I could swear I added TZ and some
documen

Bug#312252: SuExec FHS compilance

2005-12-31 Thread Tollef Fog Heen

* Philipp Kern

| Apache 2 fails to address FHS 2.3 which mandates /srv/www for saving
| web pages.

No, FHS doesn't say what you think it does:

: /srv : Data for services provided by this system
: Purpose
:
: /srv contains site-specific data which is served by this system.
:
: Rationale
:
:
: [...]
:
: The methodology used to name subdirectories of /srv is unspecified
: as there is currently no consensus on how this should be done.
