Bug#370074: xserver-xorg: Changed ModulePath breaks 3rd-party installers, e.g. NVIDIA video driver

2006-06-02 Thread Alistair Turnbull
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: important

Those of us with an NVidia GeForce 6100 (motherboard graphics) have to
use a binary-only driver supplied by nVidia. The installer puts modules
in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, and until this morning that worked fine.
However, my latest apt-get dist-upgrade left me without an X server,
because the default module path has changed to /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

I can see the attraction of the new convention, but there is no need to
break compatibility with 3rd-party software. I eventually found that
adding the following lines to the "Files" section of my
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file fixed the problem:

# Path on which the NVIDIA drivers install themselves.
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
# Debian default module path.
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"

The order is important: the NVidia-supplied "libglx" module must be used
in place of the one which comes with the X server.

Obviously the ideal solution would be for NVidia (and others?) to
release their driver under a licence that allows it to be packaged by
Debian, but pragmatically that's not going to happen, so I suggest a fix
along the above lines might be a good idea.

Bug#370075: lsb-base: killproc fails if signal argument not specified

2006-06-02 Thread Vincent Ho
Package: lsb-base
Version: 3.1-6
Severity: important
Tags: patch

killproc() fails if the optional signal argument isn't supplied. There
are two problems here:

1) specified takes the value of either 0 or 1, both of which
evaluate to true when tested at line 111 using "if [ $specified ]".

2) Inside that block, it's then assumed that a signal argument was
passed, but sig will end up empty if that wasn't the case, resulting in
an error from start-stop-daemon.

The solution in the attached patch is to initialise specified to an
empty string, which evaluates to false and makes the test meaningful.
Secondly, after fiddling with sed, we fall back to setting sig to TERM
if it is still empty.

Tested briefly with both bash and dash.

Bug#370076: proftpd: Doesn't create entry in inetd.conf

2006-06-02 Thread Sebastián Cruz
Package: proftpd
Version: 1.3.0-8
Severity: normal

I had installed the testing version of proftpd and after the upgrade to 1.3+ I
had to check several times my config file with no success. I had it configured
as running from inetd, but it failed to start every time and recommended to
chech my config file, which I did but couldn't find anything wrong.
Finally I discovered that the FTP service line had disappeared from
/etc/inetd.conf. This is most strange as it was running before the upgrade,
but I cannot guarantee that the FTP service line was in there as I hadn't seen
it before this incident.
After adding the line with:
update-inetd --group STANDARD \
--add "ftp\tstream\ttcp\tnowait\troot\t/usr/sbin/proftpd\tproftpd"
everything went back to normal.
Please check if you're not removing the line or forgetting to put it back in.
Thanks!

Bug#369835: qt4-x11: uninstallable with nvidia-glx-dev

2006-06-02 Thread Randall Donald
This sounds like apt getting confused. I just tried running debuild with
nvidia-glx-dev satisfying the libgl-dev dependency and it runs fine but
when using the build-dep command I get the same results you do.

Bug#366910: module-assistant: Fails to correctly compile nvidia-kernel-module

2006-06-02 Thread Randall Donald

Well it seems Eduard fails to see the issue on this one. Anyways this
might have to do with module-assistant's package cache as removing
the /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel directory before running
module-assistant and going through its various steps makes it see the
correct version.

Define a header existence test. "name_of_header" is the name of a

   of the above header tests.

OK, but there should also be a "!exists:name_of_header", to test for
missing headers. (Not the same as giving "exists:name_of_header" a
negative score.)

OK, maybe
header J_FUNNY_MSGID1 Message-Id !~ /./
will do.

This really isn't a bug if you aren't using the driver.
There are libraries associated with the driver, nvidia-tls and libGL

Bug#339085: coreutils: You can't make this change. Not now, and quite probably never.

2006-06-02 Thread Zack Weinberg
Package: coreutils
Version: 5.96-3
Followup-For: Bug #339085

I want to add emphasis and additional justification to Josh Triplett's
request that the old (POSIX-1992) command line syntax continue to work.

On this issue, I speak primarily as a (semi-retired) GCC maintainer.
Every other month or so for the past few years - ever since upstream
coreutils dropped the old syntax - someone has tried to build GCC on
top of a hand-built coreutils, found that the configure script relies
on the old syntax, and complained to the mailing list. We then would
have to explain to this person that the configure script cannot be
updated to the new syntax.

Yes, I said *can not* be updated. You see, GCC still supports systems
other than bleeding edge GNU... in particular, it still supports systems
where the coreutils equivalent had its functionality *frozen*, in every
detail, as of POSIX-1992. I know for a fact that this is the case for
releases of Solaris up to and including (2.)8, and I strongly suspect
it is still true even for the most recent releases. It has also been
reported to be the case for various releases of HP-UX and AIX. On these
systems, POSIX-2001 syntax like "tail -n 1" simply *does not work*.

Now, personally I would be quite happy to see all such obsolete
proprietary Unixes die the death, but that's not the world we live in
today, and I doubt it will happen - not for at least another decade.
Therefore, people writing portable shell scripts have to keep using the
old syntax, and that means GNU coreutils needs to keep supporting it.
In the default mode, and without any diagnostics.

I am cranky about this because I've explained it over and bloody over
again to the aforementioned people who are confused why they can't build
GCC, and I've also explained it over and over to coreutils upstream, who
just do not seem to understand why they are wrong to hew to the letter of
POSIX-2001. See http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2006-05/msg00102.html
for my most recent go-round with coreutils upstream -- I disagree with
some of the things he says in response but did not have time to continue
the argument; in particular, he says "yabbut +n syntax isn't portable
either" when he could make it be so by ceasing this silly insistence on
removing it.

I advise in the strongest possible terms that Debian just plain ignore
upstream on this issue, and leave POSIX-1992 the default, ideally
forever. And, moreover, please stop advocating that people change their
scripts, because some of us can't, and we're tired of the nagging.

Bug#370067: xserver-xorg-video-via: via driver turns screen white, hsync out of range reported

2006-06-02 Thread Ariel Rodriguez
Package: xserver-xorg-video-via
Version: 1:0.1.33.2-3
Severity: important

Using the via driver causes my screen to turn white and freeze up my system.
The xserver log (included below) reports that the hsync is out of range for
every
resolution and reports a bad mode clock. The log also reports an "Unknown
Card-Ids" error as well. Older versions of the driver (prior to my upgrade to
Xorg
version 7) have also had this problem. I'm running Debian on an Averatec
3715-EH1 laptop, if that helps. I've also tried booting with both the noapic
and
acpi=off kernel options, but those have had no effect.

You both make fair points, that there is room for disagreement here about
whose responsibility it is to make sure Xsession scripts don't fail out and
abort the X session.

It is still my opinion that this is a bug in gnupg-agent, because the
default behavior desired by most users, AFAICT, is that installing
gnupg-agent will give a gpg-agent to those users with a correctly configured
env while not interfering with the X sessions of those without one. So I
think the default behavior here should be for gnupg-agent to catch its own
errors here and return success, independent of how any other Xsession hooks
might operate.

But I don't think this is RC, so downgrading to important.

Cheers,

Bug#361138: stable: vulnerable, oldstable: not affected

2006-06-02 Thread Moritz Naumann
The vulnerable lines and the developers' counter measure can be inspected at
http://mantisbt.cvs.sourceforge.net/mantisbt/mantisbt/view_all_set.php?r1=1.60&r2=1.61

The package state is as follows:

STABLE

The package in Debian stable is currently at version 0.19.2-5sarge2:
http://packages.debian.org/stable/web/mantis

This version is based on upstream version v0.19.2
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.19.2.orig.tar.gz

This version is vulnerable, lines 126-131 contain the vulnerable code.

The debian patchset
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.19.2-5sarge2.diff.gz
does not modify or fix these lines. As such, the Debian package should
be considered vulnerable. A patch is attached.

OLDSTABLE

The package in Debian oldstable is currently at version 0.17.1-3:
http://packages.debian.org/oldstable/web/mantis

This version is based on upstream version v0.17.1
http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.17.1.orig.tar.gz

This version is not vulnerable, it does not contain the vulnerable code.

The debian patchset
http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.17.1-3.diff.gz
does not introduce the vulnerable code. As such, the Debian package
should be considered unaffected.

I'd suggest -d.

Yes, I recognize that; however, I don't like the approach when there are
multiple bugs involved. OTOH, this is a bit of a personal issue, and as you
say, the method of not opening a separate bug might be more common these
days.

Actually, I think what _should_ be done on this, is to establish some kind of
consensus on what's the right thing to do, document it in the developer's
reference and then decide on the default. This is especially true since
what's "right" yesterday might not be "right" today or tomorrow, with the BTS
gradually getting full version tracking (so, the need to actually track bugs
fixed in NMUs this manual way would completely go away). I'm not sure what
the future holds here, and I'd like to get some input on it from someone
more knowledgeable before this goes in.

Including config.h in library public headers sounds like a really bad
practice, so I think the best solution is to modify the two header files
that actually use one of the HAVE_* macros (*), leaving only the branch
that is true in Debian systems, and ship an empty zipios-config.h in the
package (which is a bit easier than removing the #include statement from
all 27 include files).

  (*) meta-iostreams.h uses HAVE_STD_IOSTREAM and USE_STD_IOSTREAM,
zipios_defs.h uses HAVE_STDINT_H, but seems a local addition from the
  Debian maintainer.

Do you want to prepare a patch?

That'd be tricky. That involves changing the way xul:menuitems find the
character to underline in the label base on the access key.

I can reproduce this with html-helper-mode, but not with any of the
other modes started via the Debian startup scripts... which leads me to
believe that the problem lies with html-helper-mode rather than Emacs.

If it turns out not to be the case, feel free to reassign back.

Bug#370060: Segmentation fault if linked with the pthread library

2006-06-02 Thread David Given
Package: libpcl1
Version: 1.6-1

I have a situation on the ARM platform where if I compile an executable to use
both libpcl and libpthread, then even if I'm not actually using threads,
trying to do anything to a coroutine causes an immediate segmentation fault.

To replicate:

$ gcc /usr/share/doc/libpc1-dev/examples/cobench.c -lpcl
--> produces working executable.
$ ldd ./a.out
libpcl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libpcl.so.1 (0x4001e000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40029000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000)

gcc /usr/share/doc/libpc1-dev/examples/cobench.c -lpcl -lpthread
--> produces failing executable.
$ ldd ./a.out
libpcl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libpcl.so.1 (0x4001e000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x40029000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40083000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000)

The reason why this is an issue is that I have an application which uses
coroutines, but not pthreads, which wants to link to the sqlite library. When
sqlite was built, it was done so with its threading support enabled; which
means that it tries to call mutex primitives in the pthreads library. This
means that linking an application against libsqlite will implicitly pull in
libpthread, which then causes it to fail.

This actually sounds suspiciously similar to a problem I previously
encountered on the i386, Debian bug 339827. To summarise: on i386 when running
a sufficiently old kernel that does not have thread-local storage, the
threading library figures out which thread is running by the location of the
stack pointer. If the application has allocated a user stack, it fails to cope
and crashes. This means that calling any thread-safe function which needs to
know what the calling thread is will fail when it is called from any user stack.

The only workaround I've got for this is to recompile sqlite without threading
support, which is painful.

Note the
"-DNO_CONFIG_H-DVERSION=\"1.4.4\"-DPACKAGE=\"skim\"-DSCIM_VERSION=\"1.4.4\""
here; something seems to be cutting off the last character of every argument.
(I actually tried adding an extra space at the end of the -DNO_CONFIG_H
argument in the script; it added an extra " in the front and an extra space
in the end, but no extra " in the end, so it looks like it's actually eating
a character off every parameter!)

Downgrading to scons in stable seems to fix the problem, so this sounds very
much like a scons bug to me. Cc-ing [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am looking at it now, sorry for the delay.

the daily d-i images do not build for amd64, because of testing being in
a pretty bad shape, many d-i copmponents are still missing.
The last available daily image was built using the old, unofficial archive.

the scsi-modules list from kernel-wedge contains lots of isa controllers
which are not marked optional. I am now going through the list and will
upload both a new kernel-wedge and linux-di-amd64-2.6 udebs (built against
2.6.16) to fix this.

Bug#370056: nmudiff: --new, --help, and --version

2006-06-02 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.9.20
Severity: wishlist

Hi Steinar and devscripts maintainers,

After a while, I decided to give nmudiff a try, and to my surprise, I've
found that having this little set of actions as a script really helps,
to thanks for it.

However, while opening a new bug to submit a NMU diff has been the
traditional approach, nowadays I really think it's more common to send
the diff to the bugs fixed by the NMU. So I hacked a copy for my ~/bin
changing that, but then I thought why not submit it, etc., and here I
am.

I attach both the new version, and a diff to the previous one. Now,
sending the diff to the fixed bug (and tagging them +patch) is the
default, unless --new is specified, which reverts to old behavior. While
I was at it, I added support for --help and --version.

Thanks,

Bug#370057: findutils: find -nowarn useless when you need it

2006-06-02 Thread gambarimasu+reportbug
Package: findutils
Version: 4.2.27-3
Severity: normal

afaik, you mostly need -nowarn when you can't change where options go.
this occurs when you have something like this:

afind () { #archive find with -depth and maybe other cpio/afio features
#sort -ru?
#nowarn is just for command line option syntax things
find "${@:?}" -depth
}

but this version of find will give the warning even if you put -nowarn
in front of -depth. you cannot put it anywhere else.

my suggested fix is to allow -nowarn anywhere on the command line.

thanks.

Bug#369822: ls -i stats unnecessarily

2006-06-02 Thread Paul Eggert
Jim Meyering <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

> So at least Solaris 8 and some glibc are affected.

I confirmed it on Solaris 10 too.

Amusingly enough, Solaris /bin/sh and /usr/xpg4/bin/sh behave like new
coreutils, not like old coreutils. That is, "ls -i dir" just uses the
readdir results; it doesn't stat. For example:

$ /bin/ls -i / | grep tmp
  1570 tmp
$ /bin/ls -id /tmp
   5153472 /tmp
$ uname -a
SunOS moa.cs.ucla.edu 5.10 Generic_118833-03 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R Solaris
$ mount -p | grep /tmp
swap - /tmp tmpfs - no xattr,size=1024m

> Unless I find a better approach, I'll turn off this optimization
> by default, and add an option to turn it back on.

Another possibility would be to disable the optimization.
Is it all that important that "ls -i dir" be fast?

Bug#369729: testing it once again

2006-06-02 Thread Nieko Woets
Thx for the reply.

I already did have that in ~/.fonts.conf set by KDE. This makes no
difference for me.

The screenshot I provided earlier on shows my problem. Fonts in Mozilla
(and everything else) are fine without anti-aliasing, but fonts in
Openoffice.org are not. This part makes no sense to me, hence the
report. It seems confined to Openoffice which shows jagged fonts.
Enabling anti-aliasing in OOo is tiresome on the eyes.

The 2.1.10-3 version displays fonts in OOo perfectly without
anti-aliasing, the latest version doesn't.

kind regards,

Nieko

It is not. libswingwt-dev is Arch: all and depends on libswingwt0 (=
${Source-Version}), so a sourceful upload is required.

This is currently not release-relevant anyway though, as swingwt isn't in
testing and isn't getting there due to build failures on multiple
architectures.

Run regularly from cron, or manually by hand?
for those who only want to try parts of tiger every 15 months or so,
and don't want to flip more than one switch, i.e., edit more than one line.

Of course no cronjob stuff at all should be installed then.

It is not. libgtk-java is Arch: all and depends on libgtk-jni (=
${Source-Version}), so a sourceful upload is required.

No, I didn't. But that should not make any difference. I only reboot a
computer when I change the kernel. But I had a power failure last week, so
everything has been booted up cleanly. And that didn't change anything.

No, I don't. I do not use any authentication. I have attached my conf-files
and as you can see, they are quite straightforward.

As I understand, you have changed the defaults for authentication. I hardly
believe, that changing those defaults solve any of the security issues that
were solved here. I even think it is a breach of the policy for
security-updates. (See also "Securing Debian Manual, 12.3.4:

Well I tried it: typed ALT+CTRL 5ecd to see char U+5ECD, and icewm
then moved me to an empty root window.
There should be a way to enter a specific U+ number to go to!

i'm not sure about that. the cryptsetup prompt is a critical output, it
should always appear, even if stdout and stderr are redirected.

i think that this is the reason why getpass was used before.

david: are you capable of writing a patch that reverts this, and writes
the prompt directly to /dev/tty again?
maybe STDERR just needs to be changed to /dev/proc/self/fd/0?

and stderr is still a better solution than stdout, don't you think so?

Ok, just wanted to be clear that this wasn't "fixed" as in "bug should be

Well, I suggest 359114 should be treated as release-critical, and a removal
request should be filed for gtkhtml3.6 whether or not peacock has
transitioned yet.

There's more work to be done before gtkhtml3.6 can be dropped from etch, of
course, since gtk-sharp2 waits on gnome-panel, evolution-data-server, avahi,
and qt4-x11...

Hi,

although it asked kindly to set permissions to suid root (see below), it does
not do so:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11876 2006-05-13 01:34 /usr/bin/netselect

I don't get an error when running netselect.postinst seperatly but it does not
do it.

Thanks

That wouldn't cause this to cease to be a bug in gtkhtml3.6, it would just
mean that the bug in gtkhtml3.6 no longer affects particular packages which
don't depend on it.

Anyway, gtk-sharp2 in testing still depends on gtkhtml3.6, as does gtk-sharp
(libgnome-cil) on arm (because it's out of date). I think the right fix is
to drop gtkhtml3.6 in favor of gtkhtml3.8, but this is not possible yet due
to the reverse dependencies. It could be removed from unstable at the
maintainer's request, though...

Sure, i shouldn't use the word 'fixed'. I just wanted to point out for bug
squashers, that this bug doesn't need a new gtkhtml3.6 upload after the
submitter ack'ed that gtkhtml3.8 fixes the problem.

AFAIK, it isn't not possible yet due to peacock (#359114) and probably outdated

Bug 363127 will keep it out of testing anyway since it's filed against
1.1.1-1. (The bug's probably also in 1.0.3, but since I couldn't trigger it
with 1.1.1...)

The .diff.gz, .dsc etc. for 1.1.1-1.2 are at
  http://zap.tartarus.org/~ds/debian/>

I've not uploaded the source tarball or the .debs since that'd take too long,
and the .diff.gz is a bit bulky because I've had to re-run autogen.sh... hmm,
I've forgotten to add an "NMU" changelog item... oh well.

These declarations are supposed to be in
src/native/include/java_lang_reflect_Constructor.h (AFAICS), which it
autogenerated by cacaoh from /usr/share/classpath/glibj.zip, which belongs to
classpath-common. IOW, it looks like classpath-common broke cacao; indeed,
the latest classpath had a bug like this -- see #368172.

In other words, cacao seems to need an upstream update. #368172 seems to
indicate that 0.96 is sufficient, but I can't find anything related to this
in the upstream changelog offhand.

I see that in version 0.44-5, patchsys-quilt.mk was modified to call
quilt with --quiltrc /dev/null. Could you make the same change in
/usr/share/quilt/quilt.make for those of us who don't use cdbs? It
should be done for the same reasons (namely custom settings in a user's
.quiltrc that could cause FTBFS).

Thanks!

Bug#229357: dpkg-buildpackage: support for Build-Options: build-arch

2006-06-02 Thread allomber
Hello DPKG developers,

Following Christian Perrier advice, I resent a former request I posted
in January. I apologise if you actually got the earlier request:

  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I am attempting to fix a long standing issue in Debian, which is fully
documented in bug #218893, namely the fact that dpkg-buildpackage will
call 'debian/rules build' even when called with -B, thus making
Build-Depends-Indep nearly useless.

For the exact issue please read #218893. The patch in the bug #229357
implement the fourth proposal.

One problem that plagued the resolution of this bug was the conflicting
opinions of the various dpkg maintainers about how to fix this issue.

So I would be very grateful f you could take a decision and implement
it.

Cheers,

Well, if you both think that pulling fixes from CVS means the package
should go to experimental first, okay, I'll respect that. However, I
really really don't want #358429 (the shlibs bug) to remain open for any
longer, but alas, I'm a bit doubtful of making an upload to fix that
without fixing the various FTBFS bugs, since otherwise we may prevent a
chunk of packages from entering testing. So: would it be much effort
(read: would either of you be willing) to create a package targetted at
unstable fixing shlibs+FTBFS? If you'd rather not, can I get a brief
summary of what the patches to fix the FTBFS are, and then I'll give a
shot to making the upload myself?

Thanks in advance,

AIUI, the proper fix for this is to do a reupload of the package with
dpkg-buildpackage -sa, to get the orig.tar.gz re-tagged by dak.

Okay. Let me know what your thoughts about this are: if you just want
quick NMUs from time to time, or co-maintainer uploads, or your lack of
time may be a serious issue for amule maintenance and you think more
people becoming really involved in packaging would be helpful.

This issue is, as you say, not mentioned on the man page; it is however
raised in /usr/share/doc/colordiff/README.Debian - maybe that's not
sufficient.

It's hard to know how to 'fix' this one, really. The problem is that
the default colours have to be set to *something* and there's always the
possibility of clashing with an end user's terminal preferences.

Right now, the default 'plain text' (not part of diff-ed output) colour
is 'white' ('black' in the example config file for light-coloured
backgrounds). Perhaps just changing the default from 'white' to
something else would be sufficient ... given that most people's
terminals will be either white text on black, or vice versa.

Dave.

Bad. What happens if you make dvips? Can you send me:
. a problematic dvi file (as short as possible)
. the output of dvips (dvips foo.dvi > dvips.log 2>&1)
. the ps file
. a screenshot of what happened

I have no idea what this could be. Maybe someone at the debian-tetex
list has an idea. I will ask after you sent me the stuff and I couldn't
find anything.

Best wishes

Norbert

Bug#258268: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: xchat-gnome_0.6-1_i386.changes REJECTED]

2006-06-02 Thread David Moreno Garza
Hi,

FWIW, this is the mail I got as rejection when I intended to upload
xchat-gnome last October.

I didn't try any further packaging attempts after.

Cheers.

Hi Maintainer,

while looking at your package in NEW I discovered that it is
linking against openssl, itself beeing GPL licensed.
Sorry, but this doesnt work, the OpenSSL license and the GPL are
incompatible. For more information, and a link to give to your
upstream please visit
http://www.openssl.org/support/faq.html#LEGAL2 or/and
http://www.gnome.org/~markmc/openssl-and-the-gpl.html

After this is fixed feel free to upload your package again.

Additionally - this looks perfectly like it should be built
out of xchat itself, as another .deb. :)
