Bug#370074: xserver-xorg: Changed ModulePath breaks 3rd-party installers, e.g. NVIDIA video driver
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: important Those of us with an NVidia GeForce 6100 (motherboard graphics) have to use a binary-only driver supplied by nVidia. The installer puts modules in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, and until this morning that worked fine. However, my latest apt-get dist-upgrade left me without an X server, because the default module path has changed to /usr/lib/xorg/modules. I can see the attraction of the new convention, but there is no need to break compatibility with 3rd-party software. I eventually found that adding the following lines to the "Files" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file fixed the problem: # Path on which the NVIDIA drivers install themselves. ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" # Debian default module path. ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" The order is important: the NVidia-supplied "libglx" module must be used in place of the one which comes with the X server. Obviously the ideal solution would be for NVidia (and others?) to release their driver under a licence that allows it to be packaged by Debian, but pragmatically that's not going to happen, so I suggest a fix along the above lines might be a good idea. Bug#370075: lsb-base: killproc fails if signal argument not specified
Package: lsb-base Version: 3.1-6 Severity: important Tags: patch killproc() fails if the optional signal argument isn't supplied. There are two problems here: 1) specified takes the value of either 0 or 1, both of which evaluate to true when tested at line 111 using "if [ $specified ]". 2) Inside that block, it's then assumed that a signal argument was passed, but sig will end up empty if that wasn't the case, resulting in an error from start-stop-daemon. The solution in the attached patch is to initialise specified to an empty string, which evaluates to false and makes the test meaningful. Secondly, after fiddling with sed, we fall back to setting sig to TERM if it is still empty. Tested briefly with both bash and dash. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-1-amd64-k8-smp Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages lsb-base depends on: ii ncurses-bin 5.5-2 Terminal-related programs and man ii sed 4.1.5-1The GNU sed stream editor lsb-base recommends no packages. -- no debconf information --- /lib/lsb/init-functions 2006-06-02 04:19:47.0 +1000 +++ ./init-functions2006-06-03 16:25:06.0 +1000 @@ -94,7 +94,7 @@ local pidfile sig status base i specified set -- `POSIXLY_CORRECT=1 getopt "p:" $*` pidfile= -specified=0 +specified= for i in $*; do case $i in @@ -111,6 +111,7 @@ if [ $specified ]; then sig=$(echo $2 | sed -e 's/^-\(.*\)/\1/') sig=$(echo $sig | sed -e 's/^SIG\(.*\)/\1/') +sig=${sig:-TERM} /sbin/start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile "$pidfile" --signal $sig --quiet --name "$base" status="$?" Bug#370076: proftpd: Doesn't create entry in inetd.conf
Package: proftpd Version: 1.3.0-8 Severity: normal I had installed the testing version of proftpd and after the upgrade to 1.3+ I had to check several times my config file with no success. I had it configured as running from inetd, but it failed to start every time and recommended to chech my config file, which I did but couldn't find anything wrong. Finally I discovered that the FTP service line had disappeared from /etc/inetd.conf. This is most strange as it was running before the upgrade, but I cannot guarantee that the FTP service line was in there as I hadn't seen it before this incident. After adding the line with: update-inetd --group STANDARD \ --add "ftp\tstream\ttcp\tnowait\troot\t/usr/sbin/proftpd\tproftpd" everything went back to normal. Bug#339085: coreutils: You can't make this change. Not now, and quite probably never.
Package: coreutils Version: 5.96-3 Followup-For: Bug #339085 I want to add emphasis and additional justification to Josh Triplett's request that the old (POSIX-1992) command line syntax continue to work. On this issue, I speak primarily as a (semi-retired) GCC maintainer. Every other month or so for the past few years - ever since upstream coreutils dropped the old syntax - someone has tried to build GCC on top of a hand-built coreutils, found that the configure script relies on the old syntax, and complained to the mailing list. We then would have to explain to this person that the configure script cannot be updated to the new syntax. Yes, I said *can not* be updated. You see, GCC still supports systems other than bleeding edge GNU... in particular, it still supports systems where the coreutils equivalent had its functionality *frozen*, in every detail, as of POSIX-1992. I know for a fact that this is the case for releases of Solaris up to and including (2.)8, and I strongly suspect it is still true even for the most recent releases. It has also been reported to be the case for various releases of HP-UX and AIX. On these systems, POSIX-2001 syntax like "tail -n 1" simply *does not work*. Now, personally I would be quite happy to see all such obsolete proprietary Unixes die the death, but that's not the world we live in today, and I doubt it will happen - not for at least another decade. Therefore, people writing portable shell scripts have to keep using the old syntax, and that means GNU coreutils needs to keep supporting it. In the default mode, and without any diagnostics. I am cranky about this because I've explained it over and bloody over again to the aforementioned people who are confused why they can't build GCC, and I've also explained it over and over to coreutils upstream, who just do not seem to understand why they are wrong to hew to the letter of POSIX-2001. See http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2006-05/msg00102.html for my most recent go-round with coreutils upstream -- I disagree with some of the things he says in response but did not have time to continue the argument; in particular, he says "yabbut +n syntax isn't portable either" when he could make it be so by ceasing this silly insistence on removing it. I advise in the strongest possible terms that Debian just plain ignore upstream on this issue, and leave POSIX-1992 the default, ideally forever. And, moreover, please stop advocating that people change their scripts, because some of us can't, and we're tired of the nagging. zw -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-1-686-smp Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages coreutils depends on: ii libacl1 2.2.37-1 Access control list shared library ii libc6 2.3.6-9GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libselinux1 1.30-1 SELinux shared libraries coreutils recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Package: xserver-xorg-video-via Version: 1:0.1.33.2-3 Severity: important Using the via driver causes my screen to turn white and freeze up my system. The xserver log (included below) reports that the hsync is out of range for every resolution and reports a bad mode clock. The log also reports an "Unknown Card-Ids" error as well. Older versions of the driver (prior to my upgrade to Xorg version 7) have also had this problem. I'm running Debian on an Averatec 3715-EH1 laptop, if that helps. I've also tried booting with both the noapic and acpi=off kernel options, but those have had no effect. 'lspci -v' reports: :00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. You both make fair points, that there is room for disagreement here about whose responsibility it is to make sure Xsession scripts don't fail out and abort the X session. It is still my opinion that this is a bug in gnupg-agent, because the default behavior desired by most users, AFAICT, is that installing gnupg-agent will give a gpg-agent to those users with a correctly configured env while not interfering with the X sessions of those without one. So I think the default behavior here should be for gnupg-agent to catch its own errors here and return success, independent of how any other Xsession hooks might operate. But I don't think this is RC, so downgrading to important. Cheers, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. The vulnerable lines and the developers' counter measure can be inspected at http://mantisbt.cvs.sourceforge.net/mantisbt/mantisbt/view_all_set.php?r1=1.60&r2=1.61 The package state is as follows: STABLE The package in Debian stable is currently at version 0.19.2-5sarge2: http://packages.debian.org/stable/web/mantis This version is based on upstream version v0.19.2 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.19.2.orig.tar.gz This version is vulnerable, lines 126-131 contain the vulnerable code. The debian patchset http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mantis/mantis_0.19.2-5sarge2.diff.gz does not modify or fix these lines. As such, the Debian package should be considered vulnerable. Yes, I recognize that; however, I don't like the approach when there are multiple bugs involved. OTOH, this is a bit of a personal issue, and as you say, the method of not opening a separate bug might be more common these days. Actually, I think what _should_ be done on this, is to establish some kind of consensus on what's the right thing to do, document it in the developer's reference and then decide on the default. This is especially true since what's "right" yesterday might not be "right" today or tomorrow, with the BTS gradually getting full version tracking (so, the need to actually track bugs fixed in NMUs this manual way would completely go away). I'm not sure what the future holds here, and I'd like to get some input on it from someone more knowledgeable before this goes in. /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Including config.h in library public headers sounds like a really bad practice, so I think the best solution is to modify the two header files that actually use one of the HAVE_* macros (*), leaving only the branch that is true in Debian systems, and ship an empty zipios-config.h in the package (which is a bit easier than removing the #include statement from all 27 include files). (*) meta-iostreams.h uses HAVE_STD_IOSTREAM and USE_STD_IOSTREAM, zipios_defs.h uses HAVE_STDINT_H, but seems a local addition from the Debian maintainer. That'd be tricky. That involves changing the way xul:menuitems find the character to underline in the label base on the access key. Bug#370060: Segmentation fault if linked with the pthread library
Package: libpcl1 Version: 1.6-1 I have a situation on the ARM platform where if I compile an executable to use both libpcl and libpthread, then even if I'm not actually using threads, trying to do anything to a coroutine causes an immediate segmentation fault. To replicate: $ gcc /usr/share/doc/libpc1-dev/examples/cobench.c -lpcl --> produces working executable. $ ldd ./a.out libpcl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libpcl.so.1 (0x4001e000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40029000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000) gcc /usr/share/doc/libpc1-dev/examples/cobench.c -lpcl -lpthread --> produces failing executable. $ ldd ./a.out libpcl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libpcl.so.1 (0x4001e000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x40029000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40083000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000) The reason why this is an issue is that I have an application which uses coroutines, but not pthreads, which wants to link to the sqlite library. When sqlite was built, it was done so with its threading support enabled; which means that it tries to call mutex primitives in the pthreads library. This means that linking an application against libsqlite will implicitly pull in libpthread, which then causes it to fail. This actually sounds suspiciously similar to a problem I previously encountered on the i386, Debian bug 339827. To summarise: on i386 when running a sufficiently old kernel that does not have thread-local storage, the threading library figures out which thread is running by the location of the stack pointer. If the application has allocated a user stack, it fails to cope and crashes. This means that calling any thread-safe function which needs to know what the calling thread is will fail when it is called from any user stack. The only workaround I've got for this is to recompile sqlite without threading support, which is painful. Bug#370056: nmudiff: --new, --help, and --version

However, while opening a new bug to submit a NMU diff has been the traditional approach, nowadays I really think it's more common to send the diff to the bugs fixed by the NMU. So I hacked a copy for my ~/bin changing that, but then I thought why not submit it, etc., and here I am. I attach both the new version, and a diff to the previous one. Now, sending the diff to the fixed bug (and tagging them +patch) is the default, unless --new is specified, which reverts to old behavior. While I was at it, I added support for --help and --version. Thx for the reply. I already did have that in ~/.fonts.conf set by KDE. This makes no difference for me. The screenshot I provided earlier on shows my problem. Fonts in Mozilla (and everything else) are fine without anti-aliasing, but fonts in Openoffice.org are not. This part makes no sense to me, hence the report. It seems confined to Openoffice which shows jagged fonts. Enabling anti-aliasing in OOo is tiresome on the eyes. The 2.1.10-3 version displays fonts in OOo perfectly without anti-aliasing, the latest version doesn't. kind regards, Nieko Steve Langasek wrote: > On Fri, Jun 02, 2006 at 02:10:19PM +0200, Nieko Woets wrote: > >>A final test confirmed my troubles: > > >>Installed 2.1.10-3 > clear fonts (without anti-aliasing enabled, this >>makes it look fuzzy) >>Upgraded to 2.2.1-2 > jagged fonts >>Downgraded to 2.1.10-3 > clear fonts > > >>It seems similar to #359104, so if confirmed it's a regression I guess. > > > This is most likely a result of the change in the default behavior of the > autohinter in 2.2.1. > > Please try setting the following in ~/.fonts.conf: > > > >hintfull > > > > So far, everyone else that has reported problems with the rendering in 2.2.1 > says that this fixes it for them. > > Cheers, -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#229357: dpkg-buildpackage: support for Build-Options: build-arch

For the exact issue please read #218893. The patch in the bug #229357 implement the fourth proposal. One problem that plagued the resolution of this bug was the conflicting opinions of the various dpkg maintainers about how to fix this issue. However, I really really don't want #358429 (the shlibs bug) to remain open for any longer, but alas, I'm a bit doubtful of making an upload to fix that without fixing the various FTBFS bugs, since otherwise we may prevent a chunk of packages from entering testing. Let me know what your thoughts about this are: if you just want quick NMUs from time to time, or co-maintainer uploads, or your lack of time may be a serious issue for amule maintenance and you think more people becoming really involved in packaging would be helpful. Bug#368973: colordiff: colorization makes some output lines disappear
On Thursday, 01.06.2006 at 22:44 -0700, t takahashi wrote: > i tested it and the hypothesis is correct. > > if you can't query the existing colors, then there is little that can > be done. it would be nice if ansi included that. > > i'd definitely update the man page to say that. it's kind of like > data loss otherwise. This issue is, as you say, not mentioned on the man page; it is however raised in /usr/share/doc/colordiff/README.Debian - maybe that's not sufficient. It's hard to know how to 'fix' this one, really. The problem is that the default colours have to be set to *something* and there's always the possibility of clashing with an end user's terminal preferences. Right now, the default 'plain text' (not part of diff-ed output) colour is 'white' ('black' in the example config file for light-coloured backgrounds). Perhaps just changing the default from 'white' to something else would be sufficient ... given that most people's terminals will be either white text on black, or vice versa. What happens if you make dvips? Can you send me: . a problematic dvi file (as short as possible) . the output of dvips (dvips foo.dvi > dvips.log 2>&1) . the ps file . a screenshot of what happened I have no idea what this could be. Maybe someone at the debian-tetex list has an idea. I will ask after you sent me the stuff and I couldn't find anything. Bug#258268: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: xchat-gnome_0.6-1_i386.changes REJECTED]
Hi, FWIW, this is the mail I got as rejection when I intended to upload xchat-gnome last October. I didn't try any further packaging attempts after. Cheers. - Forwarded message from Joerg Jaspert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2005 11:19:31 -0800 From: Joerg Jaspert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: David Moreno Garza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Debian Installer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: xchat-gnome_0.6-1_i386.changes REJECTED Hi Maintainer, while looking at your package in NEW I discovered that it is linking against openssl, itself beeing GPL licensed. Sorry, but this doesnt work, the OpenSSL license and the GPL are incompatible. For more information, and a link to give to your upstream please visit http://www.openssl.org/support/faq.html#LEGAL2 or/and http://www.gnome.org/~markmc/openssl-and-the-gpl.html After this is fixed feel free to upload your package again. Additionally - this looks perfectly like it should be built out of xchat itself, as another .deb. :) -- bye Joerg === If you don't understand why your files were rejected, or if the override file requires editing, reply to this email. - End forwarded message - -- David Moreno Garza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | http://www.damog.net/ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | GPG: C671257D Some people call it the happiest place on Earth. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
