Bug#289267: [pkg-ntp-maintainers] Bug#289267: [debian-ntp] Bug#289267: ntp: NTP on ifup
On Tue, Dec 12, 2006 at 08:41:12AM +0100, Tore Anderson wrote: * Kurt Roeckx Can I suggest you run ntpd with the -x option in that case? I already do. Both ntpdate and ntpd will by default slew the time if it's smaller the 128 ms, and step when it's bigger. I know. Maybe I should have been clearer though, what I'm objecting to is primarily the suggestion to mimic the way Ubuntu does it, as they invoke ntpdate with the -b parameter in the if-up.d script, ensuring that the clock will _always_ leap. -b means always step, -B means slew, and you asked for -B before? It now seems to be using -b if it's a static interfacce. I also have an objection to the if-up.d script per se, though, but this is not as strong. I simply do not expect things to happen to my clock when I fiddle around with my network interfaces. I have always thought the primary task of ntpdate is to quickly get time roughly correct at bootup, so that ntpd will have a much easier job of getting the box completely into sync. When this combo is working ntpd will ~never step time, even without -x (barring bad hardware). If no NTP server is available at bootup, well, then you'll just have to wait for a network connection and possibly step the time then. And isn't that _exactly_ what ntpd'll do when run without the -x option? Then why throw ntpdate into the mix here? It's after all less precise than ntpd so chances are you'll end up with a clock that's more out of sync than before... ntpdate shouldn't be changing time when ntpd is running, and ntp doesn't get restrarted by default, so I guess I'm still not getting it. Bug#400158: numpy 1.0 available

Numpy 1.0 is not compatible both with current versions of scipy and matplotlib. A newver Scipy version compatible with numpy-1.0 has been released yesterday. I am going to upload it, but I don't think it will be possible to include both of them in Etch. iff 1.0rc1 is incompatible with 1.0, we should try to get 1.0 into etch. is matplotlib released in a version which compatible to 1.0? Yes, certainly. matplotlib 0.87.7 was released soon after NumPy 1.0, but primarily to provide compatibility for the Win / Mac crowd, since NumPy's ABI changed between 1.0rc2 and 1.0rc3. But the API has only changed in minor ways, and I'm fairly confident that any of the last few releases of matplotlib (0.87.{5,6,7}) will compile and run fine against NumPy 1.0. I guess we'd need a version bump for the soname. I just recently installed numpy1.0 on cygwin/osx together with matplotlib 0.87.7 and there is/was no problem using it. However travis also mentioned that scipy lagged behind, but as this is now fixed it would really be a good idea to get the so name change going now... and quickly upload scipy/matplotlib afterwards. I build the slmodemd file with the alsa option under the modem directory (make ALSA_SUPPORT=1) as described in README. I run the driver as follows: #slmodemd -c FRANCE --alsa -l The modem works fine (with kppp and xtel applications), but the log file slmodem.log.modem:1 created by slmodemd is saved under the root directory, instead of the /var/log directory. Solution: In the source file modem/modem_debug.c replace the next line: static const char *modem_debug_logfile = slmodem.log; with the line: static const char *modem_debug_logfile = /var/log/slmodem.log; and build slmodemd again Kill and run slmodemd again as described above. I guess we'd need a version bump for the soname. snip However travis also mentioned that scipy lagged behind, but as this is now fixed it would really be a good idea to get the so name change going now... and quickly upload scipy/matplotlib afterwards. Bug#402715: gnome-hearts crashes on startup
Package: gnome-hearts Version: 0.1.3-1 Severity: grave Hi, I've already commented on this in bug #396043, but I'm afraid that it will get lost there, what with the Etch freeze, and my problem doesn't appear to be quite the same as that one anyway (though it may have been introduced by the fix for it). Basically, as soon as I try to start gnome-hearts, it crashes, rendering the package completely unusable for me. The reason for the crash appears to be the way load_card_styles() in hearts.c works. It assembles a hash table of all the available card styles, and then calls: g_hash_table_foreach(game_card_styles, card_style_add, NULL); This NULL pointer is passed as the 'first_style' parameter to card_style_add(), where it's dereferenced like this: if (*first_style == NULL) *first_style = g_string_new(value); This, of course, causes a crash. So what it probably *should* say instead is something like this: g_hash_table_foreach(game_card_style, card_style_add, first_style); Incidentally, this is pretty much what it says in the original version of card_style_add(), before the Debian-specific patches have been applied, except that card_style_add is cast to a GHFunc. The patched line is identical to what it looked like in 0.1.2, though, so I guess the Debian patch just wasn't correctly updated to 0.1.3. Sincerely, Torbjörn Andersson

Bug#402603: tomcat5.5: blocks on startup until log pipe is read
Ah, so the situation is the result of your local configuration which disables rotatelogs? No, it's in 5.5.20-4 in the archive. This might lower the importance of the bug (it's currently considered release critical). I think we should release 5.5.20-2 which is in testing. It has no RC bugs, so there is no reason to try to push an update in now. (In the experimental 5.5.20-3, I switched to running Tomcat under jsvc, and I expected that this could break things. That's where this problem crept in.) It's usually to diagnose startup problems. I propose that we add a debug mode, disabled by default, in which we send stdout and stderr to a regular file, or even the named pipe, and tell the user to read it manually. In normal operation we ignore stdout and stderr. There is no reason for daemons to print stuff to stdout and expect someone tp read it, and the regular logging mechanism in Tomcat is excellent. pgp1cjH6Bvhqf.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#402603: tomcat5.5: blocks on startup until log pipe is read
On Tue, Dec 12, 2006, Marcus Better wrote: It's usually to diagnose startup problems. But you need to bootstrap it somehow, and during the bootstrap, there's usually a simple logger which logs to stdout. I found this blog post on the subject interesting: http://pezra.barelyenough.org/blog/2005/03/java-daemon/ I don't how well it maps to tomcat5.5 in particular, but it seems to me it has a Bootstrap in catalina and some shell redirections for the initial messages. I suppose what one could typically see in these messages could be could not load internal class xyz. Once the daemon is bootstrapped, it will open its regular log files (as configured), and close its stdout and stderr indeed. -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have no strong feelings one way or the other. -- Neutral President

Bug#402719: procmeter3: segfaults when long lines in /proc/mounts
Package: procmeter3 Version: 3.4e-1 Tags: patch Procmeter3 segfaults immediately on startup if /proc/mounts has long lines. The function Initialise() in modules/df.c has few buffer overflows when there are long lines in /proc/mounts: sscanf() is not called with a proper size arguments on one occasion. The line[] buffer size is currently 128 which is a bit too small. The attached patch fixes both the sscanf() format string and the size of the line[] buffer by extending it to 256 characters. It might be a good idea to add some functionality to the GUI rendering of the disk information as well. Bug#402717: f-spot: Inconsistencies in Arrange by menu
Package: f-spot Version: 0.3.0-1 Severity: normal The Arrange by menu behaves erratically in 0.3.0. - When starting up F-Spot, both Month and Folder are selected, even though they look like radio-buttons. Expected behaviour: only one should be selected. - Clicking on one of these radio-buttons then deselects the corresponding entry BUT the actual sorting order is the deselected one, with an inconsistency between the radiobuttons as displayed and the result. Expected behaviour: make sure the one I clicked is the one that gets selected and used. - Next clicks behave okay. The oh-so-inappropriately-named Reverse order menu item is also behaving very strangely. Upon startup, the checkbox is checked here (as well as both radio-buttons), and pictures are sorted in forward chronological order (the most natural one if you ask me). - When clicking on Arrange by month, the photos stay sorted in forward chronological order, but the wrong radio-button gets checked. Clicking again on Arrange by month then checks the month radio-button, and pictures get sorted backwards. The Reverse order checkbox is still checked. - Clicking on Reverse order unticks the checkbox, pictures stay ordered backwards. - Clicking on Reverse order again ticks the checkbox again, and photos get displayed in forward chronological order. Expected behaviours: - radio-buttons and checkboxes should be consistent with the actual sorting order (and with the usual one-and-only-one checked radio-button at any time); - one should not have to fiddle *four times* with the View menu on startup to get one's preferred sorting order; Related suggestions: - rename Arrange by month to Arrange by chronological order; - rename Reverse order to Forward order, since it's what actually happens; - maybe simpler: remove the confusing Reverse order checkbox, and add a radio-button instead, so the Arrange by sub-menu would have three entries, folder, chronological order and reverse chronological order. Maybe add a reverse folder if needed, but I don't see the point. Bug#402406: Proposed plan to fix acibase issues (was Re: Debian Etch has been frozen)
severity 402406 important thanks On Mon, Dec 11, 2006 at 10:26:32PM +0100, Daniel Rodriguez Garcia wrote: Therefore, I think the problem here is time. It would be a pity to lose this package for this silly thing. License issues are not a silly thing. They are rather important if we want to ship a free OS. Possible alternatives: 1) Cut out the graphics rendering functionality from ACIDBASE (not really essential, for me). A link for exporting data to a spreadsheet format would be enough. Currently I think that's the only viable option, remove the php-image-graph *and* ensure the package can work without it. I agree with Jeremy that providing a package that does not Depend: on php-image-graph but asks the user to use a mechanism which is outside the Debian package management system to install needed functionality is a no-no. If the dependency is removed then the maintainer must ensure that the package can fully work without it, even if that means stripping of PHP pages that depend on that library. That would imply (doing a cursory look at the PHP code): - remove the link from base_main.php to base_graph_main.php - do not include base_graph_form.php in base_main.php - modify base_graph_common.php so that it does not complain so loudly when Image/Graph is not found. Just say that the functionality is currently not available in Debian (due to license issues, point to the Bug report) and say that users that need it will have to install the PEAR modules. - document in NEWS.Debian why the graphs have been removed and when will they be reenabled in the front page. For reference, the bug to be referenced is #401797 *and* #402406 (do not reference #340730 or #335994) That way users will not see the PHP scripts used to make graphs and they will not (going through the GUI) get a big error saying you are missing something. While at the same time, users depending on them will still be able to reach the PHP scripts and see what happened. Does that sound like a plan? David, could you please change that and test that the changes I outline are sufficient? 2) A text based histogram (similar to that in main screen)? That would mean implementing something that substitutes the current functionality, not something feasible to do right now if we want to get this into etch. 3) Implement that functionality as a Java applet ?? i.e. optional functionality: you leave the problem of installing Java in their browsers to client users. That's also a no-no (you would get into the issue of how to compile the Java code to build the jar). Either the functionality is available for all users using *only* the Debian archive or it's not. Having people go through loops is uncalled for. Regards Javier signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Rationale: - not increase in archive size or linux-2.6 package build time, - this will improve compatimility with other distros (consider scenario when running FC or RHEL in domU; these distros do ship only pae xen kernels, according to http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-xen-devel/2006-December/000998.html) - pae kernels are ok for any x86 machines; slowdown caused by enabling pae on machines with less than 3.%G of memory, if any at all, is hardly measurable on machines where using xen makes sence (anyone using xen on Pentium-I with 128M of ram?) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. BTW, I just googled around, is http://bugs.donarmstrong.com/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=296986;msg=5 related to this? http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=296986 is where that bug is better archived. klogctl is a system call. logrotate doesn't use it. What will be happening is that the error message is coming from one of the programs that one of the rotation scripts in /etc/logrotate.d/ is calling. You might like to upgrade to logrotate 3.7.1-2 or later, as that identifies which script caused an error. I think that the problem is probably with syslog-ng. Bug#402727: config.status generates directories with '$(top_srcdir)' in them
Package: automake Version: 1:1.10+nogfdl-1 Severity: normal Hello, Thanks for packaging automake. In some of my Makefile.am I have entries like this: tut_test_SOURCES = \ tests/aliases.cc \ tests/error.cc \ tests/fast.cc \ tests/file.cc \ tests/rawmsg.cc \ tests/record.cc \ tests/var.cc \ tests/vartable.cc \ $(top_srcdir)/extra/test-utils-core.cc \ $(top_srcdir)/extra/tut-main.cc if I just run ./configure, then running config.status creates directories like these: dballe/bench/$(top_srcdir) dballe/bufrex/$(top_srcdir) dballe/core/$(top_srcdir) dballe/db/$(top_srcdir) dballe/msg/$(top_srcdir) fortran/$(top_srcdir) tools/$(top_srcdir) I traced this to this piece of code in the generated config.status: for file in `sed -n s/^$am__include $am__quote\(.*(DEPDIR).*\)$am__quote'$/\1/p' $mf | \ sed -e 's/\$(DEPDIR)/'$DEPDIR'/g' -e 's/\$U/'$U'/g'`; do # Make sure the directory exists. [...] The possible values of files are obtained by grepping include lines from generated 'Makefile's. Here's a sample of what I have: include $(top_srcdir)/extra/$(DEPDIR)/test-utils-core.Po include $(top_srcdir)/extra/$(DEPDIR)/tut-main.Po include ./$(DEPDIR)/aliases.Plo include ./$(DEPDIR)/conv.Plo include ./$(DEPDIR)/csv.Plo include ./$(DEPDIR)/error.Plo include ./$(DEPDIR)/file.Plo Therefore, config.status picks up that '$(top_srcdir)/extra/' prefix and ensures that it exists, without expanding $(top_srcdir). I'll now rewrite my Makefile.am files differently, however this looks like an automake (or autoconf?) bug, so I'm reporting it. I found this blog post on the subject interesting: http://pezra.barelyenough.org/blog/2005/03/java-daemon/ Tomcat has something similar with the commons-daemon mechanism, which we are using now. pgpOd7Exskc3g.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#397384: Do not use [EMAIL PROTECTED] for bug ping-pong
I normally wouldn't respond to -devel about this sort of thing, but because this is the third time this week that someone has asked [EMAIL PROTECTED] to deal with this sort of issue, I am. Please followup to -devel, not this bug or to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you disagree for some reason. On Mon, 11 Dec 2006, A. Costa wrote: I'm having a hard time keeping a minor but valid bug open in 'module-init-tools'. If the maintainer is not convinced, then ask -devel for advice. If -devel agrees, and the maintainer is still not convinced, your only choice is to appeal to the tech ctte to override the maintainer. [If you're doing this, you better have already written (or gotten someone else to write) the patch to fix whatever bug you want reopened and fixed; otherwise the ctte will likely close and ignore your bug report too.] Maintainers, of course, should not capriciously close bugs or tag or block them nonsensically, and should attempt to explain why they are closing bugs or altering states wherever possible, but regardless of whatever inequities the maintainer has committed, using the control interface to argue with them will only result in your exclusion from it. Bug#401164: hoichess: the opening-book is missing

Point 2: Moves/Games in the opening book might be copyrighted! Thats not what I wnted to express, its more that if I would distribute binarys thats not allowed with debian. I don't really think any games would be copyrightend. ;o) I just got this message. Since I haven't seen the previous ones can anyone give me details ? Are you trying to use crafty books with another chess engine ? No: I was looking for a Debian package of an opening-book for 'hoichess'. The hoichess author told me that he uses the .pgn file that is used for the gnuchess openingbook. What I really would like to have, is the possibility to do something like: 'cat openings.pgn | hoichess -B openingbook.bin' Then I can compile the opening book at configuraton time with the package, I would distribute the source .pgn and nobody will/can ask nasty questions. I packaged some opening books for Debian to be used with crafty. AFAICT, there are no copyrights over chess moves (it would be like trying to copyright football goals). If there were that'd be a great problem for all tournament chess players: if one wanted to play one particular variant of an opening during a match, he'd first write the author to have his permission and/or pay rights to play such variant... :-) Thats right, but in my opinion I would have to provide sources (any .pgn file) with a binary opening book, to do it the debian way. (Also I have to explain everyting to my sponsors.) Another Question is if the opening book is not compiled at the system, if I will get problems with litle/big endian. While the arguments (especially file) are now checked to not allow dangerous stuff, one can still make it to show an arbitrary md5sum. Though the security impact is mostly limited to people posting links which make funny things show up on a Debian website (or very stupid users), it would still be better to fix that: I'd suggest to not show the md5sum here (it's anyway that low on a long page, that one seldom looks down there), and just add it on the package page after Package Size and Installed Size. It would be a pity to lose this package for this silly thing. License issues are not a silly thing. They are rather important if we want to ship a free OS. I agree and understand. Possible alternatives: 1) Cut out the graphics rendering functionality from ACIDBASE (not really essential, for me). A link for exporting data to a spreadsheet format would be enough. Currently I think that's the only viable option, remove the php- image-graph *and* ensure the package can work without it. I guess I am confused at some of what is being suggested. I had recommend just removing the dependency on Image_graph and was told it was a half-assed idea? And if you remove the dependance, why would you remove the link? Change the error message on base_graph_common.php to reflect the needed PEAR install and you will be done. Since the Debian package is not maintained by me or the project, it is you choice whether to do this. Bug#402738: Audio CD's under Debian Etch (frozen) not readable
Package: Sound Juicer, rhythmbox, ? Version: Debian Etch, frozen (all upgrades installed as of December 11th, 2007 Since Debian Etch RC1 GNOME applications such as Sound Juicer and rhythmbox cannot read audio cd's anymore. Sound Juicer displays an error message saying that it's not an audio cd (altho the titles of the songs of the CD are correctly listed). Playing a song or ripping a tune does not work with Sound Juicer. Rhythmbox displays an error message which is not readable when an audio CD is present. grip, on the other hand, is able to rip the audio cd. Playing an ogg tune in rhythmbox is also possible. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#401025: installation-report: Fails to mount encrypted LVM
On Tue, 12 Dec 2006, Frans Pop wrote: Options to configure LVM will appear as soon as you mark a partition to be used as physical partition for LVM. See installation guide. I was expecting it to be under the Encrypted LVM section and moreover I had no idea how to use partman to resize LVM partitions - but this might be just me. Anyway, I try to make things not more complicated and go the suggested way accepting the partition sizes for /home, /usr, /var and /tmp. Hmmm, at which stage should I do this? You mean, boot from the install CD and once I can switch to a virtual console change the script? Try the following: - boot with install priority=medium - proceed until the menu option for partitioning is highlighted (but don't execute it yet) - switch to VT2 - 'nano /lib/partman/definitions.sh' and add the line - switch back to VT1 - run the menu option Save logs and start a webserver (assuming you have a local net with a second box you can use to view the logs) - run partman and try to reproduce the error I did so - and by the way, the web interface to the logfile is *really* great, you guys rock! - and I think I might run in a different problem. While the progress bar stops at 5% as it did in my previous try, the reason seems to be different, because /target/{home,tmp,usr,var} are mounted and are quite empty. But if I look on the end of the logfile I see the following problem (sorry for the German locale): Dec 12 12:05:01 in-target: Die folgenden Pakete haben verletzte AbhÀngigkeiten: Dec 12 12:05:01 in-target: cupsys-bsd: Kollidiert: lpr aber 1:2006.11.04 soll installiert werden. Bug#390862: [Pkg-xen-devel] Re: Bug#390862: -bigmem version of xen kernels is really needed

Bug#402705: [Pkg-openldap-devel] Bug#402705: slapd: Runnin postinst chown -R'd /var/run to openldap:openldap
Manoj Srivastava wrote: Package: slapd Version: 2.3.30-1 Severity: critical Why is it critical? well sshd fails to restart saying that /var/run/sshd needs to be owned by root; inn did not restart, and neither did postgresql. All kinds of unrelated software broke when this happens. I can reproduce at will by running as root: bash -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/slapd.postinst configure I debugged it to the point where one part of the script was writing to file descriptor 9 for a Perl script to read to psit out where the database dir was, and realized this is a bit much to be debugging at 2am while trying to ensure my machine reovers from this. __ sudo grep '^directory' /etc/ldap/slapd.conf directory /var/lib/ldap I don't really use ldap anymore, so I am on the verge of purging this, but I'll keep it installed long enough to help debug this issue. Hi, Can you send me your parameters for argsfile and pidfile in /etc/ldap/slapd.conf ? (Or send me in private after removing the passwords the slapd.conf ?)
