Build-dependency on kdelibs4-dev seems to be enough. Changing
build-depends from kde-devel to kdelibs4-dev will save installing ~100
packages, including hal, and will not prevent the uim source package
from being built. I attach the patch here.

Paras, please remember that you have commit access to tasksel's SVN

Bug#435494: zephyr: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update

2007-07-31 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: zephyr
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch l10n

Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the
debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors.

If you do not already use it, you might consider using the
"podebconf-report-po" utility, which helps warning translators about
changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages.

The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators
when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf
templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week
for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA
process which requires time).

podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the
needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the
PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-)

Example use (from your package build tree):

$ podebconf-report-po

This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an
update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a
mail to send to these translators (you can also use the
"--languageteam" switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in
"Language-Team" field).

You can also use this utility to request for new translations:

$ podebconf-report-po --call

This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the
needed information and material for new translators to add new
languages to your supported languages.

If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of
courseThis message is generic..:-)

Thanks.

However, I can not remember that I ever did anything with this
/etc/udev/rules.d/compat-full.rules symlink. It rather looks like a
leftover from old versions to me.

Just FYI, for the case that this symlink needs special handling as it
seems to break the system.

You are right, I have made a mistake here. However seems have changed
upstream, and this bug is now workarounded in glibc instead of being
fixed in gcj.

So the best is probably to keep this bug opened until we fixed it in the
next upload (probably with glibc 2.6.1).

Please change section of libcommons-modeler-java-doc from libs to doc.
As the name of the binary package suggests its just documentation for

Note that you have an NFS mount... cfs is handling it.. :-(

I could force every machine in the debian universe to have portmap, or I
could have nfs mounts (even cfs) require some manual intervention and
avoid the security exposure of portmap. Given that nfs users tend to be
clueful, I'm inclined to leave it this way.

Yep. The complaint is that you have nfs mounts currently in place, and
don't have a way to mount them anymore after the upgrade finishes, which
could be bad.

Bug#435487: MAC changing completely broken.

2007-07-31 Thread Brandon
Package: ndiswrapper
Version: 1.47-2
Severity: important

According to this page:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/index.php?/component/option,com_openwiki/Itemid,33/id,tips/
the mac address should be able to be changed with NetworkAddress in the
conf file. That does not work. I have included my conf file, to show
all of the paramaters that I have tried (MacAddress, network_address,
etc). I have tried them with and without colons. The referenced page
says that you should not use colons, but colons were required in
previous ndiswrapper versions. I have also tried "ifconfig wlan1 hw
ether ". That does not work either. Mac changing worked in
ndiswrapper 1.28-?.

My card is a Linksys WUSB54Gv1. It has a prism54 driver. I am using the
debian stock 2.6.18-4 kernel (haven't upgraded because of nvidia
issues). I had these same problems getting ndiswrapper to work in
2.6.21-2.

Bug#435486: typo "QT-interface" in extended description

2007-07-31 Thread Philippe Cloutier

Package: reportbug-ng
Version: 0.2007.07.19
Severity: minor

The extended description contains "It has a nice and clean QT-interface
allowing you to

search for existing bugreports and filter them easy and fast."

"Qt" is not completely capitalized, and "Qt interface" is fine.
"easy and fast" is also wrong and should be something like "easily and
quickly".

I see no reason to write "bugreports" rather than "bug reports".

As for the content, it focuses too much on comparison with reportbug. I
suggest the following description:

Graphical interface for interacting with the Debian Bug Tracking System

Reportbug-NG is a graphical interface using Qt for reporting or
manipulating bugs in Debian's Bug Tracking System. Reportbug-NG can
search bug reports and display, create and close a bug report.

Homepage: http://reportbug-ng.alioth.debian.org/

I couldn't find what filters reportbug-ng proposes, which is why I
didn't mention them in this description.

That was probably the cause. I always wrongly assumed discrepancies were
due to block size rounding rather than reserved-for-root space. I'll run
some tests when I get the opportunity.

Feel free to adjust the bug to match the behaviour you saw rather than
the hallucination I reported.

> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo "test" > /mnt/test.txt

The shell redirection in the second command is done by the unprivileged
shell, I would not expect it to be any different from the first command.
I see your point that root can still write to the filesystem, though.

Bug#435483: The bazaar package name is confusing and would be best renamed to 'baz'

2007-07-31 Thread Robert Collins
Package: bazaar
X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It would be nice to fix this during the current development cycle, so
that users looking for 'bzr' - the current supported vcs from the Bazaar
project, won't see 'bazaar', which is not what they want, and get
confused.

For users of 'baz', the new package name should upgrade the old one, so
upgrades keep the software installed.

Likewise the documentation package.

2007-07-31 Thread t takahashi
thanks for your reply.

> i guess that was not what you meant..

mirroring an active root to your new drive fails miserably. why?
because /dev is hidden. but why *must* it fail miserably? i did
propose two solutions.

the error occurs before, not after, the first INIT message, but i see
now that it is userspace. so why not reassign to the appropriate
userspace package? it is not a bad thing to make the boot process
easier for users without harming anything else.

*i* don't need this fixed, because i figured out the workaround
(copying .static/dev as a special case after copying everything else).
so as you can see this is not a support request. but it is
appropriate to save the lives of the people on the street below *other
people* from having computers fall on them. mirroring root to a
backup partition with rsync is common whether or not it's a good idea
to do so without lvm snapshots and the like (i don't use lvm because
it's an extra layer and i don't know if it would unshadow /dev or not;
i assume not).

thanks.

Yeah, this has been a problem for a long time, and it lingered mostly
because lintian was unable to distinguish between things like this that
were part of the upstream source and things added mistakenly by the Debian
maintainer.

I'm going to downgrade all of the similar tags to info level unless
there's something about them that really breaks the package and add new
tests for adding these files in the debian diff, which is the real problem
worth warning about. (Unfortunately, that's going to mean duplicate tags,
one at info and one at warning, for these problems. Hm. That's annoying.
Maybe I'll unify debdiff and cruft to avoid that.)

2007-07-31 Thread t takahashi
thanks for your reply.

it is not fair to call this a support request; i was not asking for
support. boot parameters won't work, because they should be
implemented by default, and because afaik they are not all
implemented. are you claiming that the items are implemented? i did
file it as wishlist.

for example, rebooting immediately or after a delay does not solve the
problem. do you really need a command line option to let the user
decide interactively when to reboot and not panic?

in general, i think the kernel by default can make the booting
experience better for users. it sounds like you disagree.

Thank you for the update of tzdata for Debian Etch in debian-volatile.
I have installed this on several machines and it does fix the problem.

However there is no fix for Debian Sarge available. The tzdata update is
not appropriate (since the time zone data in Sarge is in the base libc6
package), and there is no libc6 update. But I see that this bug on
Debian Sarge (#433870) has been closed by the Etch update due to being
merged with the Etch bug report (#433869).

Will there be an update issued for Debian Sarge to libc6 with the 2007f
timezone data? Or does the fact that the Debian Sarge bug was closed
without any separate explanation mean that this bug will not be fixed in
Debian Sarge?

Thanks,

Ewen

Bug#435214: [Pkg-octave-devel] Bug#435214: Clarification of licensing terms of semidef-oct

2007-07-31 Thread Stephen Boyd

rafael,

i am happy to switch the license to GNU, but of course we have to check
with lieven. as a coincidence i will see lieven tomorrow, when we can
send the final confirmation.

however, it should be noted that semideg_prog is really quite old, and
there are now far more recent solvers available for semidefinite
programming. i have not used semidef_prog for many years now. i don't
know which solver is best for linking to octave.

i (and many others too) do most of my day to day convex optimization
work using cvx, which has a GNU license, but unfortunately, runs on top
of matlab. our plan (hope? goal?) however is to develop a full GNU
system for modeling and solving convex optimization problems. lieven's
CVXOPT is a good start along these lines, but i am not sure how easy or
hard it is to tie python/C into octave. if you are interested in
optimization software for octave, i'd be happy to chat; maybe we can
help (beyond changing the license on ancient, but working, software to GNU).

Only recently, it has been brought to our attention [3] the fact that the
license terms in the semidef_prog's README file are incompatible with the
Debian Free Software Guidelines [4]. At least, the phrase "distribute this

software for any purpose without fee" is ambiguous.

Unless the license terms are clarified or they are switched to some standard
license language (like MIT/X11 or GPL), we will be forced to removed the
package from Debian, which would be a pity for our users.

Just FYI, the semidef_prog software seem sto work correctly with the latest
version of Octave (2.9.13).

I downloaded and installed the package:

% dpkg -l flickr\*

But I see no improvement. I have several sets in my flickr account but
non of them turn up when using flickrfs.

I do not agree.

In libgpevtype-dev 0.50-1 you have an file
/usr/lib/pkgconfig/libgpevtype.pc which has:
Requires: glib-2.0, mimedir-1.0, libeventdb

This means that libgpevtype-dev should Depend on packages providing the
.pc files for glib-2.0, mimedir-1.0 and libeventdb.

It has: Depends: libgpevtype1 (= 0.50-1)

So it's missing:
libglib2.0-dev, libmimedir-gnome0-dev, libeventdb-dev

Otherwise the libgpevtype.pc is of no use, and anything build depending
on libgpevtype-dev that tries to use it will get an error.

Bug#435474: Package: qa - Suggest to upgrade severity of Sky2 module problem

2007-07-31 Thread Kajetan Hinner

Package: qa

Hello

First of all thank you for all the work that you and others do on the
Debian project.

I'd suggest to upgrade the problem with the sky2 module to "severe"
because at least in my case it makes Debian Etch unusable as a Server
with the Sky2 module.

System:

Linux rocktunes 2.6.18-4-686 #1 SMP Wed May 9 23:03:12 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

Latest etch with all upgrades.

rocktunes:/var/log/apache2# lspci -v -s 3:0
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E
Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 22)
Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology Marvell 88E8053 Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Gigabyte)
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 50
   Memory at f100 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
   I/O ports at 9000 [size=256]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at 8000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [48] Power Management version 2
   Capabilities: [50] Vital Product Data
Capabilities: [5c] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+
Queue=0/1 Enable+
Capabilities: [e0] Express Legacy Endpoint IRQ 0
   Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting

After doing some research I found that the sky2 module is already known
to be broken (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/) -
but this page suggests that this only affects the installation and not a
running system.

But in the case of our server all seemed to run fine for months but
since three weeks or so every now and then all network traffic stops -
without any apparant reason - and it's not fixed by itself.

Jul 24 14:33:20 rocktunes kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
Jul 24 14:33:20 rocktunes kernel: sky2 status report lost?
Jul 24 14:40:15 rocktunes kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
Jul 24 14:40:15 rocktunes kernel: sky2 hardware hung? flushing

At first I thought of some other problem - switch, cable, whatever. But
I never thought that such a severe bug would be unresolved in a stable
etch release. So I strongly suggest to remove the sky2 driver at all -
it even seems that there are several other issues with that module in
later kernels and this makes a Debian GNU/Linux server with NICs using
sky2 unusable.

Best greetings,

Kajetan Hinner

I've just installed the librsvg2-common package and I can confirm that
fbpanel is now able to display SVG and does not spit errors any longer.

Hence, it really seems that the new dependency will fix the bug.

Bug#435473: postfix: strict_rfc821_envelopes allows MAIL FROM with trailing spaces

2007-07-31 Thread Frédéric Brière
Package: postfix
Version: 2.3.8-2+b1
Severity: normal

After upgrading to etch, I started seeing these in my server logs:

rejected "MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED] >": "501 5.5.2 Syntax: MAIL FROM:

It would appear that AMaViS (which I'm running as a before-queue filter)
has become stricter in what it accepts. (Which is why I turned on
strict_rfc821_envelopes in the past.) But if I read RFC 821 correctly,
this should not have been allowed by Postfix in the first place. To
quote section 4.1.2:

  MAIL FROM:

   ::=

   ::= "<" [  ":" ]  ">"

(RFC 2821 doesn't seem to contradict this either.)

Package: linux-source-2.6.22
Version: 2.6.22-1
Severity: wishlist
File: linux-source-2.6.22

for example, when you supply root= with the wrong device, the kernel
can panic. this requires physically traveling to the box and
rebooting it, since ctrl-alt-del does not work.

is it possible for the kernel to do any or all of the following
actions instead?

1 instead of panicking, ask the user for the correct option
2 allow reboot, shutdown, poweroff in a menu
3 restart boot loader
4 allow ctrl-alt-del
5 print the kernel command line (including the kernel location)
6 save the command line and kernel output to a nonvolatile medium
7 allow user notes to go to a nonvolatile medium

i am not saying any of these is possible, just that they are desirable. also,
some of these require the boot loader's help.

in general, imho getting the kernel to work can probably be made more
pleasant.

thanks.

There has been a library transition due to a recent release of GPE and
gpe-contacts is out of date. v0.47 is on release and depends on the new
library API for libgpevtype: libgpevtype1 which in turn depends on
libeventdb2. The watch file is also out of date so 'uscan' does not

So your original report is incorrect and attributed to the wrong

Right, it seems it had a "fixed" command instead of a "close" command.

The "fixed" command is different than having a tag fixed. The fixed
command would say in which version it's fixed, and change the list of
versions it's fixed in. While the tag command would change the list of
tags.

"-e" takes an argument, that must follow immediately (either directly or
as the next argument). That's how getopt works for every other utility,
and how POSIX requires that option arguments are handled (see
).

"-F" does take an argument. It is an option on its own, modifying the
operation of the utility.

Can you explain what you mean? forking at startup doesn't make sense to
me since xfce4-terminal doesn't do that.

Bug#435470: tasksel: Tasks (and distro images) should be created by popcon clustering

2007-07-31 Thread Bart Massey
Package: tasksel
Severity: wishlist

Since popcon submissions are per-user, there is important
information there about the correlations between packages.
This information could easily be used to compute
(automatically, and in a privacy-preserving way) clusters of
packages that are commonly installed together. This would
provide a set of tasks that is well-adapted to being
installed as a unit. In particular, these tasks would
presumably include both "vertical" and "horizontal"
components, i.e., things that are associated by similar
function as well as similar underlying userbase.

In addition, clustered tasks would make a nice way
to create customized disk images for offline installs. The
tasks created by clustering would probably have to be named
by hand; names could be chosen from the existing task names,
or from a whole new set.

Ok, I'll compile it myself then. Good to know then that apt-get won't
overwrite my own.

Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libeventdb.pc'

This seems to say that libgpevtype-dev needs to Depend on

Bug#435469: linux-source-2.6.22: udev: common user action causes undecipherable hang

2007-07-31 Thread gambarimasu+reportbug
Package: linux-source-2.6.22
Version: 2.6.22-1
Severity: normal
File: linux-source-2.6.22

summary: you can't boot from a naive mirror anymore. i have a
solution below.

a user who copies to a root partition with rsync (at least with
--one-file-system) will most likely expect it to boot. instead it
hangs with "unable to create an initial virtual console". this can
lead to users throwing the computer out a window, or doing unnecessary
debugging. ahem.

the suboptimal workaround is to special-case /dev/.static/dev . this
is not obvious to people who don't know about udev.

so for the sake of this common operation by likely many users, instead
of hanging, i think that the kernel should boot. at least the
following solution allows this:

1. udev put .static on the actual disk so that rsync copies it.
2. on boot, if /dev is unpopulated and unbootable, the kernel
looks for .static, and fixes things.

if this is unworkable, the kernel should check for an unpopulated /dev
and tell the user about it.

in general, imho the kernel can be improved in many ways like this to
help the user.

thanks.

Thank you! Although on the Shibboleth front, I unfortunately haven't had
nearly the time and effort to put into it as I would like. This issue
with log4cpp, for example, I was planning on verifying and never managed
to. :/ I am sorry about the problem.

> I applied these tags according to the descriptions on

Yeah, and I didn't mean to fault you there. The description on the bug
page is unfortunately not really how the tag is used in practice. In
practice, the security tag is as a signal of "the security team needs to
do something about this bug" and generally only goes with things that
warrant a CVE and a security advisory. I don't think this particular
problem is at that level; it's more of a "software doesn't work under
load" sort of bug.

It took several rounds of me adding that tag and having someone from the
security team remove it before I figured out quite how it's used.

> The package is not only vulnerable to DoS attacks: it's just not usable
> for production use in an environment with more than a handful of users.

That's more of a grave bug. Which it does sort of warrant.

The problem is that the shibboleth-sp package itself isn't buggy; there's
a bug in the log4cpp package. But the log4cpp package isn't necessarily
gravely buggy, since it's only the way that Shibboleth uses it with
threads that causes the problem. So there's a grave problem with using
the shibboleth-sp package, but not really a grave bug.

It's kind of annoying. Our bug tracking system doesn't capture this very
well.

I think I'm going to upgrade this bug to serious, retitle it to indicate
that it's a log4cpp bug, and block it on the log4cpp bug, since that way
there's some record that the shibboleth-sp package *does* have an RC
problem.

> That's why I added the 'etch' tag. I really hope we will get a stable
> package soon.

If the log4cpp folks do include this fix in their next release as the
maintainer was hoping to do, then I'll at the very least upload a backport
of that package (and of xerces-c) to backports.org.

Getting this fixed in etch will require the stable release team to accept
a log4cpp update. I'm not sure what our chances are there, but I can
propose applying just the patch that I sent separately and see what they
say.

If you could give me an ab command line that you use, that would be
great. I just don't know enough about how to use it (I've never used it
before), and it would save me a lot of time.

Yeah, understood. Sorry to have sounded snippy about this.

This is a workaround for an Internet Explorer browser bug, we don't
normally treat these as vulnerabilities in DSAs. You can of course
fix it in a stable update, as it's still a bugfix for some users.

..fwiw, a simple umount of cfs etc nfs type mounts
fixes my problem, and maybe #435414 too?

Bug#435214: [Pkg-octave-devel] Bug#435214: Clarification of licensing terms of semidef-oct

2007-07-31 Thread Rafael Laboissiere
I am one of the members of the Debian Octave Group [1], which maintains the
Octave-related packages for the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. Your
semidef_prog software, which was ported to Octave by A. S. Hodel, has been
packaged for Debian [2] since 1998.

Bug#435459: cron-apt: patch to make config.d only apply for the file in question

2007-07-31 Thread Marc Haber
Package: cron-apt
Version: 0.4.14
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The attached patch modifies config.d semantics so that variables set
in config.d are only honored for the corresponding action.d item while
returning to the default read in from the config file for the next
action.d item.

This feels much more natural, to me at least.

A different way to implement would mean having suffixes for the
variable name in config.d, either FOO_FROMHERE to replace FOO's value
for the rest of the cron-apt run, or FOO_HERE to only replace FOO's
value for thi action.d item.

Please indicate which way you'd prefer, and I'll send a modified
patch. I do think that the patch listed above is the easiest one.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#435218: udev: /dev/tty* symlink to themselves

2007-07-31 Thread Bill Thompson
I had this same problem on my system. The problem was caused by the
following entry in /etc/udev/compat.rules:

KERNEL=="ttyS[0-9]*",  SYMLINK+="%k"

This rule had been necessary to access the serial ports on my system in
earlier versions of udev. Commenting the rule out and rebooting fixed
the problem for me.

Bug#435458: Useless priority change is recorded

2007-07-31 Thread Samuel Tardieu
Package: bugs.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

I changed by mistake a bug priority from "normal" to "normal" and the
change has been recorded as an action (priority changed from normal to
normal) while it should have been a no-op.

Bug#418161: acknowledged by developer (closing 418161)

2007-07-31 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Hi,

Why do you close this bug again? It's already closed a few times
with the right version. Do you for some reason think it's not closed?

(It still affects etch, you didn't need to add a tag for that, and
you'll need to upload to proposed-updates if you want to fix it in
etch.)
