Bug#453907: ITP: mayavi2 -- A scientific visualization package for 2-D and 3-D data

2007-12-01 Thread Varun Hiremath
Package: wnpp
Owner: Varun Hiremath <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: mayavi2
  Version : 2.0.2a1
  Upstream Author : Prabhu Ramachandran , Gael
Varoquaux
* URL or Web page : http://code.enthought.com/mayavi2/
* License : BSD
  Description : A scientific visualization package for 2-D and 3-D data

 MayaVi2 is a cross-platform tool for 2-D and 3-D scientific data
 visualization.  Its features include:
   * Visualization of scalar, vector and tensor data in 2 and 3 dimensions
   * Easy scriptability using Python
   * Easy extendability via custom sources, modules, and data filters
   * Reading several file formats: VTK (legacy and XML), PLOT3D, etc.
   * Saving of visualizations
   * Saving rendered visualization in a variety of image formats.
 .
 MayaVi2 has been designed with scriptability and extensibility in mind. While
 the mayavi2 application is usable by itself, it may be used as an Envisage
 plugin which allows it to be embedded in user applications natively.
 Alternatively, it may be used as a visualization engine for any application.
 .
 This debian package actually bundles several useful packages from the Enhought
 Tool Suite -- tvtk (traited VTK), Envisage and various handy envisage plugins
 used by the default mayavi application.

Bug#453244: Waiting for sponsor to upload

2007-12-01 Thread Thomas Perl
Hello, Marco!

I've already packaged 0.9 shortly after the release, but my sponsor has
not yet uploaded the package. I've sent a mail to him some days ago and
I also mailed the Debian Multimedia Team and asked for someone to upload
the package.

The packaging source can already be found in the demudi SVN repository
at svn.debian.org.

Bug#453906: ITP: durus -- simple object persistence framework for Python applications

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Simon Ruggier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Binary package name : python-durus

* License :
http://www.mems-exchange.org/software/durus/Durus-3.7.tar.gz/Durus-3.7/LICENSE.txt

Durus is a simple framework that allows applications written in Python
to store objects in a persistent database, filling a similar role as
the Zope Object Database, but with a more minimal feature set. It is
optimised for reading, and thus best suited for applications that only
write rarely.

Yeah, I think the convenience word does help there. For example, I share
some common support code between multiple packages, but I wouldn't
consider this requirement relevant to that, since it's not a convenience
copy of code from other packages. It's code that just happens to be
duplicated across multiple packages but which has no independent existence
(and different packages often have subtlely different versions).

Also, this is where "should" comes in; if there's a good reason not to do
it, one can not do it.

This didn't really answer my question. To recap:
Could you try unloading all of the plugins and see if it still crashes?
If it no longer crashes, try loading each of them individually until you
see the crash.

If you move your ~/.purple directory out of the way, it will disable all
plugins on the next startup.

Bug#453767: no longer starts after python-gst0.10 upgrade

2007-12-01 Thread Ari Pollak
reassign 453767 python-gst0.10
thanks

I'm reassigning this back to python-gst0.10 since the python-gst package
no longer exists, but there does not seem to be a proper upgrade path
for people who already had python-gst installed from etch.

Bug#453904: rhythmbox: Noise when playing music files

2007-12-01 Thread Thomas Stenhaug
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.10.1-1+b1
Severity: important

When playing mp3 files with Rhythmbox, I'm getting some noise, I think it's
mostly low-frequency sounds. The noise is not there When playing the same
files with xmms, xmms2, totem or banshee. (I tested with a couple more that
I can't remember the name of, but the story is the same; no noise.)

lspci says this about my sound hardware:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 02)

I'm not sure what other information could be useful, or what I could do to
find the problem.

may wish to do that by hand.

Problems with netstat.8:

1. Broken command synopsis syntax. This may mean you're using a
construction in the command synopsis other than the standard
[ ] | { }, or it may mean you have running text in the command synopsis
section (the latter is not technically an error, but it's impossible
to translate into DocBook markup).

2. .TP or other markup used where .SS is needed, or the reverse.

Bug#453899: ether_line returns far too much

2007-12-01 Thread Matthew Wilcox

Package: libc6
Version: 2.6.1-1+b1

I'm convinced this is an upstream bug, but the glibc upstream bug
reporting page is about as snarly as any I've ever seen, and insist I
report it to you instead.

Here's a test program:

#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include

int main(void)
{
struct ether_addr addr;
char hostname[1024];
int fd = open("ethers", O_RDONLY);
const char *ethers = mmap(NULL, 10, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, fd, 0);

ether_line(ethers, &addr, hostname);

printf("%s\n", hostname);

return 0;
}

And here's the data file (ie "ethers") I run it against:

00:16:35:4b:ca:eb   charming
00:30:6e:1b:6f:2c   fozzie
00:30:6e:38:2a:29   rowlf
00:30:6e:1e:6e:65   animal
# honeydew wireless (HP 11b card)
00:02:2d:1d:d7:f2   honeydew-wb
# honeydew wireless (3com 11g card)
00:12:a9:d1:8b:1f   honeydew-wg
# honeydew tethered
08:00:46:77:c2:53   honeydew

Here's what MacOS X prints:

charming

Here's what glibc prints:

charming
00:30:6e:1b:6f:2c   fozzie
00:30:6e:38:2a:29   rowlf
00:30:6e:1e:6e:65   animal

Clearly it stops at the first #, not at the end of line.

This is a severe bug as it can lead to overrunning the 'hostname' buffer.

kdewebdev-3.5.8.tar.bz2 running against KDE 3.5.5 but did not have any
problem.

The backtrace provided seems to indicate that an XPATH value was being
watched, if that is the case what XPATH was that?

Having bit more detail in steps to reproduce would be good as I might be
doing something slightly differently.

Bug#453266: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#453266: xfce4-terminal: text displays slowly and hogs CPU in some tabs and instances

2007-12-01 Thread A. Costa
On Fri, 30 Nov 2007 10:37:02 +0100
Yves-Alexis Perez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> Could you test « by hand » ...gnome-terminal...

Have done so but the results seem inconclusive. I get results that
for 'seq 100' range over {9,14,15,46,52} seconds real time. I
opened about 50 tabs, that was the '14'.

Note that I had background processes going at the time, which might
account for it, but maybe not. Anyway, none of these runs compared
to the 'xfce4-terminal' slowness.

I haven't seen the 'xfce4-terminal' slowness in the last few days.

Retesting today... new instance, 1st tab 84s, run again 81s, 2nd tab
89s.  Takes too long, I'll knock off a '0'.  ' seq 10' 2nd tab 9s,
9s, 9s; back to first 9s, 9s; hmmm, opened 50 tabs, 50th tab 39s, 37s;
try another 50, 100th tab slow at first but sped up -- 9s, 9s, 8s...
that starting slowness, if I do 'seq 1' it takes 6s,8s,6s,6s,5s,6s,
adding a zero, back to 9s. Add a zero, 19s,20s,22s,17s.

The 6s for the 'seq 1' in tab 100 looks like the kind of thing I had
before.

Tried tab 2 'seq 1' in GnTerm again, 10s,0.7s,0.7s,0.7s. Tab 50
8s,8s,7s,9s. Opening tab 100 9s,4s,4s; try 'seq 10', 8s,10s,7s.

In a nutshell, with many tabs, I see that the output speed of 'seq' is
not a flat line... it begins slowly then speeds up, by the looks of it
there seems to be two speeds or "gears", low gear 'seq 1' 6s
(=~1800per/sec), high gear 999000 in 19-6=13s (=~.77000p/s).

It is and was enabled.

Well the 'compositing' tab exists and under it there's an unchecked box
"Enable display compositing". It still needs to be off in X then?
Either way I'll test it soon... (but can't right now).

HTH...

PS: is there a way to automate opening a lot of tabs from the command
line and adding a command? That is, a way to tell the terminal "open
a window, then open 50 tabs, and in the 50th run 'foo'". 'expect' could
probably do it, but maybe there's some other way.

Bug#453900: libvirt: malformed Standards-Version control header

2007-12-01 Thread Russ Allbery
Package: libvirt
Version: 0.3.3-3
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 5.6.11

This package has a multiline value for its Standards-Version control
header. It looks like part of the extended description of one of the
packages was appended to the Standards-Version part of the source
stanza.

I noticed this when it broke lintian.debian.org in odd ways (which I'm
fixing now).

Bug#453894: Want to preset network speed

2007-12-01 Thread Arie Skliarouk
Package: network-manager-kde
Version: 1:0.2-2

Due to buggy bcm43xx driver, only 11mbit connection works reliably. There is
similar, speed-related bug report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=376965

According to "iwconfig", network-manager-kde (NMK) applet uses 1mbit speed
for DHCP-negotiation stage.

If I manually, in separate window, specify 11mbit connection "iwconfig eth1
rate 11M", then the negotiations go through, and I get the connection,
otherwise NMK fail on negotiation stage (24%).

How can I make network-manager-kde, to always use 11mbit connection speed?

Bug#453892: unrar-free does not support self-extracting archives

2007-12-01 Thread Stefan Monnier
Package: unrar-free
Version: 1:0.0.1+cvs20070515-1
Severity: wishlist

Unrar-free does not know how to list or extract the contents of
self-extracting Rar archives. It turns out it's very easy to handle
because all you have to do is to remove the SFX header, which can be done
by searching for the magic "Rar!" string which begins the actual archive.

See
http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/emacs/lisp/arc-mode.el?revision=1.84&root=emacs&view=markup
for sample Elisp code that strips the SFX header and passes the result to
unrar-free so as to provide support for self-extracting archives.

Bug#442263: Any progress on opensim ITP

2007-12-01 Thread Jeff W

Hey,

In fact I did indeed have some files that may have been of use, but I
am right smack in the middle of trying to get my shit back together
after a rather painful hard drive crash. I've lost mostly all my work
that I've done in the past year, so it may take me some time to
rummage around my fileservers and backups. I would love to send
whatever I have to you, I just have to find it first.

I was able to package OpenSim into a binary .deb package, but I wasn't
able to get a source .deb package together because there was an
extreme lack of collaboration at the time I was attempting to package
it.

I believe I stored a backup of the binary .deb package on a server
somewhere, so at the very least I should be able to get that. Keep in
mind, the version of OpenSIM that was packaged is very old by now, and
is probably not relevent, but hey what the hell.

In my constant state of extreme disarray, this email may slip my mind,
so if I don't reply with something useful in a week, drop me a line
again to see if I'm still kicking.

Cheers,
Jeff.

After upgrading, this happens to me if I have python-gst0.10 and
python-gst both installed.

$ python
>>> import pygst
>>> pygst.require("0.10")
>>> import gst
>>> gst.gst_version
(0, 8, 12)

I don't know who broke what when, but this is not a bug in Quod Libet. A
temporary fix is to remove the python-gst (which is for 0.8) package.

As the subject says, there's no easy way to extract one of the files in a
rar archive to stdout (or to a specific file).
Instead, unrar-free always extracts the file to a new file whose name
depends on the file you asked to extract. This makes it very unfriendly
for scripting.

warrant wishlist severity (or being closed with a documentation change
only).

I set root=/dev/daisy/root in grub (daisy is an LVM2 volume group and
root is a logical volume in that group), and found that I was unable
to boot the system from the initramfs produced by update-initramfs.
The error was something like "waiting on root file system."

I believe the problem is in these tests in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 (which belongs to
this package):
# Make sure that we have a d-m path
vg=${vg#/dev/mapper/}
if [ "$vg" = "$1" ]; then
return 1
fi

# Make sure that the device includes at least one dash
if [ "$(echo -n "$vg" | tr -d -)" = "$vg" ]; then
return 1
fi

When I changed to root=/dev/mapper/daisy-root, booting succeeded. The
LVM HOWTO mostly employs the /dev/daisy/root style, not the
/dev/mapper/daisy-root style, so it seems likely others will try the
first approach.

Maybe there's a good reason for those tests, but it seems to me a more
permissive policy would avoid the very serious situation of an
unbootable system.

If you think it best to preserve the current behavior, it would be
helpful to document it, e.g., in README.Debian. I couldn't find any
documentation other than the source code on the current setup.

man lvcreate doesn't seem to say what path(s) in /dev get generated;
the one example (for snapshot) uses the /dev/volgroup/volname style.
It would be useful, even aside from the booting issues, for the man
page to be more explicit about where to find LV's in /dev, at least
for a standard Debian system (I realize with udev almost anything is
possible).

The code cited above may also account for some of the other reported
"can't boot" failures, e.g., 409171, 409243, 351679.  However, 409243
clearly uses the /dev/mapper style.

I found the code to be broken, ignoring the negative logic.
I somehow dropped it during the last rewrite. I fixed this in SVN.
Solution will be released upstream with 1.4.9

Why removed from last version dh_iconcache, replaced now with dh_icons

retitle 342817 nv open source driver hangs system with GeForce 6600 PCIe

I thought I'd give this another try, since the proprietary drivers (as
packaged for Debian) are unavailable for the 2.6.22 kernels. As before,
it hangs the system so badly that only a manual power off fixes things.

For me, this bug is very severe: it hangs the entire system, and exposes
me to security risks because I must stay with an older kernel.

Bug#445326: Same feedback wrt the brightness, no matter the level

2007-12-01 Thread Jonny Noog
Hello,

I can confirm this bug. It seemed to start happening after I upgraded to hal
0.5.10-2. Also, when I change the brightness using the slider on the Power
Management Preferences dialog box, the brightness oscillates between what
looks like 0% and 100% while I move the slider, but then settles on the
correct brightness once the slider has stopped moving. Although the
brightness level indicator continues to show a level of 0 regardless of what
the actual brightness level is.

I normally run aptitude from a konsole session, su'ing to a root prompt

Should the closure of the konsole session stop aptitude, even if it is

If aptitude "loses" its controlling terminal, shouldn't it quit anyway,

I am having the same bug:

Or use things like "if [ -d /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders ]; then rmdir
... fi" to only attempt deleting the directory when it exists.

I've checked most of the packages again (except ttf-gfs-baskerville,
ttf-gfs-didot, ttf-gfs-olga and ttf-gfs-porson for which I'm still
waiting for upstream feedback). The packages look good and are doing
their job AFAICT. I've added the Vcs information in debian/control.

I'd be grateful for your help in co-maintaining the packages. Do you
want to join and add yourself to the Uploaders field now? Thanks.

BTW, I've re-pinged Mohammed Adnène Trojette (adn) who offered
sponsorship a while ago. But I imagine it might be better to have a DD
who's mother-tongue is Greek to take care of the GFS fonts :)

Potential remaining issues are the defoma-hints. (Defoma segfaults when
creating the hints).

Yes, they are in sync.

Yep. I'm not convinced we really need the defoma hints to provide useful
functionality to the vast majority of users.

So I think we're good to go ahead.

Did you actually check that suspend to ram *never* works with the NV driver?
on all supported hardware? There are many things involved in suspend to ram,
including the kernel, the X server and the driver.

What problem are you experiencing? This bug report is pretty useless without
any detail about the problem. Did you try passing |acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the
kernel command line?|

|Note that the nv driver does very rarely get big new features added. If|

I don't know whether TV output on RS482 has been tested. But FWIW, load
detection
of the TV output is disabled by default (it creates some problems in
some cases). That's
probably why xrandr says S-video is disconnected. To reenable TV load
detection (and
maybe get xrandr to report S-video as connected), try:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

Bug#453711: I made a patch for using normal $HOME (As documented in the glib documentation)

Beside Gimp and Streamtuner I didn't know of the existence of the other
software.

However, there is at least that many applications using gtk and using
$HOME.

Well, yes and no. If it is this buggy programmed than it should at least
be documented the right way. But the problem is much deeper as this is
(on unix) a completely wrong behaviour. On many systems you might have
(temporarily) no home directory. Setting $HOME to a local directory let
you still work; not so with Gimp. (Yes, I know GIMP2_DIRECTORY but this
is not what is expected.) That you use getent is just a problem of a few
pices of software. Unfortunately also for Gimp. Many, many other
software use correctly $HOME and work well.

Half of libgtk2.0-doc doesn't get built with the current version.
2.12.1-3 doesn't have this problem. Looking on the mirrors yields the
following file sizes:

Most standalone GTK apps do not look at $HOME, only g_get_home_dir().
GIMP, Pidgin, LogJam, Brightside, and Streamtuner all do not use $HOME.
Because of this, and because you can override gimp's home directory with
GIMP2_DIRECTORY, I'm only considering this a minor documentation bug.

If you think that it should be removed from Debian instead of being
orphaned, please reply to this bug and tell so.

If you agree that it should be orphaned, sending the following commands

True. And the "traditional UNIX" way is the expected one. Moreover if
you read the man page of gimp the "traditional UNIX" way is the
documented one too!

> One of the reasons for this decision is that applications in many cases

This is completely bullshit in my opinion. There might be settings (I
know some) where getent of the home directory gives a non existing one
and the $HOME environment (set in the pam state) points to a (local)
usable directory.

There might be more cases where the directory from getent has the
problems above than the one in $HOME.

And this is, by the way, exactly the reason why I am such concerned.

> Since applications are in general not written to deal with these
> situations it was considered better to make g_get_homedir() not pay

Well, it do not return the "real home directory" as I mention above.
Note that all other software is using $HOME (even the X authentication
in .Xauthority if not other configured). Only gimp make this problem.
(Well, only in the set of software I use. There might be some more using
the glib. But also many software using glib use the correct home
directory from $HOME (gqview for example))

> Did you take the appropriate precautions for those cases?

No, as you can see in the patch it just implements the recommendation in
the documentation you quote from. There is also no need if you use
modern WM than kde or gnome as it is impossible to login with a non
existing $HOME (By the way, also gnome use the $HOME)

But it might be very simple to do some additional checks as it is only
used on a few places. As mention before there might be, more over, no
need as you just have other problems if $HOME is not usable. So before
you can start gimp, that have to be solved. This might be completely
other on windows. But as I know debian is not ported to windows right
now.

Well, since this has "thinkpad" near it, let me make it pretty clear:
whatever you guys do, DO NOT hook into thinkpad-acpi/ibm-acpi bay ejection
and undocking functionality as it stands on anything that will be shipped by
Debian. I have deprecated it for a long time now, and it *will* be removed
or completely changed (to match generic bay and dock interface) before Lenny
is out.

Back to the problem at hand: there are Linux generic ACPI "dock" and "bay"
drivers, they are supposed to notify userspace of any ejections and
reconnections. Only, they don't do everything that is needed yet, and they
don't handle many of the real ejectable devices in a laptop (e.g. ThinkPad
batteries, floppies, and anything else that is not a SATA/ATA/ATAPI device).

As for automated bus rescanning, sincerely, it is up to the kernel to do it.
Anything else will be just an ugly hack or highly specific to a particular
machine model. You really need to do ACPI/platform specific node -> kernel
device -> device bus mapping to do it properly, and the kernel is the place
to do it.

Userspace should be getting the usual udev messages for device hot-insertion
and hot-removal, and not need to care about anything else.

> is really the package that should take care of that. After all,

Frankly, a package should deal with anything and everything to do with ACPI
support if it is going to be named "acpi-support". If it is a
suspend/resume helper, it should have been named differently, IMO.

Err... that's likely to just work in 2.6.22+, as long as you are using the
new disk device drivers (libata/libpata ones), which will make ATA/SATA
drives show up as SCSI devices. I don't think the old IDE drivers can
handle it half as well as the new ones. Granted, the new drivers are not
as friendly to some PATA hardware as the older IDE drivers, yet.

Dear maintainers,
I suppose, you might already know it, but wine crashes with segfault on
amd64-system. I checked the original sources from winehq, to, but got the
same result.

At the moment, I can not tell any more, that would help.

Bug#453711: I made a patch for using normal $HOME (As documented in the glib documentation)

2007-12-01 Thread Ari Pollak
The documentation for g_get_home_dir() says the following:

Note that in contrast to traditional UNIX tools, this function prefers
passwd entries over the HOME environment variable.

One of the reasons for this decision is that applications in many cases
need special handling to deal with the case where HOME is
Not owned by the user
Not writeable
Not even readable

Since applications are in general not written to deal with these
situations it was considered better to make g_get_homedir() not pay
attention to HOME and to return the real home directory for the user.

Did you take the appropriate precautions for those cases?

Bug#453866: pm-utils: outdated instructions in README

2007-12-01 Thread Johannes Rohr
Package: pm-utils
Version: 0.99.2-3
Severity: normal
File: /usr/share/doc/pm-utils/README

I've found two inaccuracies in the README, I guess the information is
simply outdated:

,
| 1) a new virtual terminal is alloced and switched to
| 2) /etc/pm/config is evaluated . This config file that should only be
|  modified by end-users.
`

I have created /etc/pm/config and added one SUSPEND_MODULES line,
which, unfortunately, had no effect. After moving the file to
/etc/pm/config.d/01foobar, it worked. In /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions,
there is a function source_configs(). This function sources the files
from config.d, but it does not source the file config.

,
| * You put a file in /etc/pm/hooks, which is executable. When suspend or
| hibernate is called, several things happen:
`

"hooks" should be replaced by "sleep.d", as
/usr/lib/pm-utils/functions shows. (see function
"find_sleepd_files()", which is called by the function "run_hooks()".

Bug#453865: debian/copyright: poppler is GPLv2 only

2007-12-01 Thread Tim Retout
Package: poppler
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 4.5

There are no licence notices with most of the file headers; the only
licence statement is in README-XPDF, which specifies version 2 of the

This does not match the debian/copyright details, which says version 2
or later, and points to 'GPL' rather than 'GPL-2' in common-licenses.

Bug#453862: Wrong mounting devpts

2007-12-01 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.174
Severity: critical

This is critical as the whole system security may be affected.

pbuilder uses the following command to mount devpts:
 mount -t devpts /dev/pts "$BUILDPLACE/dev/pts"

A consultation of the mount man page:
 Mount options for devpts
The devpts file system is a pseudo file system, traditionally
mounted on /dev/pts. In order to acquire a pseudo terminal, a
process opens /dev/ptmx; the number of the pseudo terminal is
then made available to the process and the pseudo terminal slave
can be accessed as /dev/pts/.

uid=value and gid=value This sets the owner or the group of
   newly created PTYs to the specified values. When nothing
   is specified, they will be set to the UID and GID of the
   creating process. For example, if there is a tty group
   with GID 5, then gid=5 will cause newly created PTYs to
   belong to the tty group.

mode=value Set the mode of newly created PTYs to the specified
   value. The default is 0600. A value of mode=620 and
   gid=5 makes "mesg y" the default on newly created
   PTYs.

This is wrong (and another bug of the mount package). The default for
the gid is 0 which will end in a explicit of 43(utmp) for xterms which
are setgid 43 or whatever the group of the process is.

So if using the default USEDEVPTS=yes the /dev/pts inside the chroot
will be mounted with no gid setting. As the kernel share for the devpts
fs is shared between all devpts the gid setting of
/etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh gets reseted.

End of the game is that after using pbuilder the devpts has the wrong
mount options.

So please use the same settings than /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh for
mounting the devpts inside the chroot. (By the way, /proc/mounts don't
show the gid setting.)

Bug#453863: Wrong description of devpts in manpage

2007-12-01 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: mount
Version: 2.12r-19
Severity: minor

Snipplet from the man page of mount(8):

   PTYs.

This is wrong. The default gid is 0 which means that the egid of the
process creating the file is used. (See the source fs/devpts/inode.c)

Bug#453864: guessnet: unexpected exception during startup

2007-12-01 Thread Berthold Cogel
Package: guessnet
Version: 0.45-1
Severity: important

guessnet exits with unexpected exception during system startup.
Initialisation of network connection fails. This happens 4 times out of
5. Restart of ifplugd then solves the problem.
The problem appeared after update from 0.42-1 to 0.45-1.
Downgrading to 0.42-1 also solves the problem.

Bug#453783: apache2: CVE-2007-4465

2007-12-01 Thread Paul Szabo
Dear Stefan,

> If you can exploit that with Firefox, Firefox should be fixed. Can you
> give more details? I would be very interested.

Will do, offline (because it affects the main web login site of my Uni).
Essentially, I found that Firefox will inherit the charset of the parent
page, when that had been selected manually (does not inherit the charset
specified in headers or meta). I guess this is a "new" bug in Firefox,
maybe they should be told...

> Any broswer that interprets ascii as utf7 without being told to do so
> is severely buggy. And CVE-2006-5152 is about MSIE, not about Apache.
> Your retraction was about Apache.

So IE "encoding autoselect" is severely buggy: I almost agree.

Whatever people think CVE-2006-5152 is about, I meant my posts to be
about Apache. (No use trying to get MS to fix IE.)

> If it affects only one buggy browser, it's low impact. ...

If that buggy browser is IE, used by 90% of the (deluded) population,
then is it not low impact.

So that the next user falls into the same pit? If a bug isn't fixed,
leave it open.

Please point me towards the Debian docs that say that only issues with
Debian Packaging may be reported via the BTS.
