I've forwarded the bug upstream (see address above). Benedikt Meurer doesn't

Bug#468173: imagej: Cannot pass image file name on command line

2008-02-27 Thread Peter Husen
Package: imagej
Version: 1.39q-1
Severity: normal

The script /usr/bin/imagej to start ImageJ passes all command line arguments
to java before the class name, so it is not possible to pass any command
line arguments to imagej (such as file names).

The synopsis in the man page however is:
  imagej [options] files...
which suggests the possibility to pass file names on the command line.

The options are understandably meant for the virtual machine to allow
setting the memory limit for example. I don't know how easy this is to do in
bash, but maybe such options could be prefixed by -j or something.

Bug#468188: mc: quickview mode should also work for directories, compressed files, images and so on

2008-02-27 Thread Paul Wise
Package: mc
Version: 1:4.6.2~pre1-3
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice if quickview mode worked for directories, compressed
files, images and so on, the same as mcview does. Since mcview doesn't
support directories, mc quickview mode of directories could just be a
normal directory listing.

No, this is unexpected fallout from the changes to make zero subscripts

 hi,

vmware upstream is not particularly good about keeping their kernel
modules up to date with kernel upstream. people using the latest
kernels generally use the vmware any-any kernel modules instead (which
vmware-package will package), but in the case of 2.6.24 unfortunately
the 'official' vmware any-any hasn't been kept up to date.

please build vmware workstation without -k and see #462620 for the
solution on building vmware modules for 2.6.24.

Ok, thanks this worked, i had tried building the any-any modules, but
missed the -k option to get the module package to build.

BTW, would it make sense to add a notice to the effect above into the

Bug#468189: heimdal-kdc/heimdal-kcm: Please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the anacron init.d script would make it possible for me to use this
information to check the current sequence and to speed up the debian
boot.

I am working on a system to update the boot sequence based on these
dependencies, and would like see this as the default in Lenny.
Because of this, it is nice if the dependencies was updated quickly.

URL:http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html
documents the LSB header format. Some debian notes are available from
URL:http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts.

Here is a patch to document the dependencies. I hope this is correct.

Bug#466687: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#466687: xfce4: windows are not being redrawn correctly when moving - nv/nvidia driver Xinerama, dualhead

2008-02-27 Thread Jan Capek

Hi,

with 2 independent screens that are not of much use for me.

Ok.

I am not sure, maybe I should file a bug somewhere in the 'nv',
'nvidia'
driver area. However, this bug seems to trigger with xfce4 only.

Well, could you try in metacity or openbox, wich support xinerama pretty
well?

I have tested with openbox. This allowed me identifying the problem a
little bit further. The issue is still reproducable in openbox when I
use the xfce4-terminal there. Further, I have noticed that when dragging
any other windows over this terminal their decorations get damaged, too.
Now I am quite sure that this is nvidia driver problem. There has to be
some window redrawing function that xfce4 uses that triggers this bug.
Should this still be reported to xfce4 bts to work around for broken
nvidia drivers?

I have made a research and tried the following configurations for
dual
head so far:

- nvidia driver (2 instances of the device) + Xinerama - this gives
me
satisfying performance, however the above bug occurs in xfce4

- nvidia driver + TwinView option (X.org's xinerama is disabled) -
this
works fine, however, the performance is VERY BAD. Moving windows
around
is fine. Switching desktop and redrawing of all windows on the
freshly
switched desktop is very very slow

- nv driver - doesn't support dual head on my nvidia card, xrandr
extension doesn't show all connected screens. I will take a look at
the
problem further here.

Well, I guess the problem lies in nvidia driver. I use at work two
nvidia-based cards, using xinerama, and it works pretty fine in Xfce (no
bug like this). But this is using nvidia legacy.

If anybody can think of a testcase, to duplicate the issue in a
different environment than xfce4, I would be more than happy to try

that.

I am attaching the two configurations + xrandr output of the twinview
one + relevant X.org logs.

The thing is, we can't really debug nvidia proprietary driver...

I would be more happy if there was some working solution for dualhead
for nVidia GeForce 6200 so that I wouldn't have to use the proprietary
driver. But as of now, I didn't find any, so I have struggle with this bug.

Bug#468192: software being phased out

2008-02-27 Thread martin f krafft
Package: dkfilter
Severity: serious

From webpage:

At this point, dkfilter is being superceded by a sister project
I have called DKIMproxy. DKIMproxy implements DomainKeys and DKIM
message signing and verifying. (DKIM is kind of an upgrade to
DomainKeys that is being standardized by the IETF. It may one day
  replace DomainKeys.)

Note: I am still supporting Dkfilter. However, at some point in
the future I hope to have DKIMproxy ready as a replacement/upgrade
  to Dkfilter.

I don't think we want this in Debian...

Well, the xfce4-terminal thingy looks like a problem in compositing (or maybe
in vte). I know that I've asked multiple times yet, but is compositing
deactivated in xorg.conf? Like:

Section Extensions
Option Composite Disable
EndSection

I would be more happy if there was some working solution for dualhead
for nVidia GeForce 6200 so that I wouldn't have to use the proprietary
driver. But as of now, I didn't find any, so I have struggle with this bug.

Yup, that's the problem with crappy proprietary and non documented hardware :(

Bug#465902: [Pkg-cryptsetup-devel] Bug#465902: cryptroot remote unlocking on boot feature

2008-02-27 Thread debian

hi!

jonas wrote:

That would mean to have a 'killall cryptsetup' at the end of every
 cryptroot execution.

 right. i think that's ok.

Not sure. It's ok in a common setup, but what about users who use custom
scripts in their initrd which invoke cryptsetup as well. sure, sounds
like a corner case, but I still don't like the idea to kill every
cryptsetup process per default in cryptroot initramfs script.

actually the console cryptroot instance (or actually: all) should be
killed by the (shell) cryptroot instance after successful completion.
as this already means the boot process will continue, the killall
cryptsetup could be spared. but this means that in case of unlocking
from remote, this would produce a dangling cryptsetup... so i guess the
killall cryptsetup would still be nicer. theoretically there shouldn't
be any valid cryptsetups left after one of the cryptroots finished.
killing the cryptroots and their child processes would be most elegant i
guess, but i wasn't able to find such a solution with the means
available in initramfs...
also, in this scenario, the check for existence of the crypttarget isn't
necessary anymore, so this change can be spared too.

i attached a new patch according to this.

david wrote:

The addition of [ `tty` == /dev/console ] I did not quite
understand. What was the purpose there? Manual invocations of the
cryptsetup initramfs script I assume?

correct. taking care the splash-stuff is done exclusively by the
instance running on the console.

As for the rest of the patch, I am still not convinced.

the killall cryptsetup/cryptroot? while i, too, would certainly prefer
to kill exactly the pid of the cryptsetup i'm looking for, in the
absence of means allowing this (afaik), i personally think a killall
would be acceptable (and preferable to just letting cryptsetup hang
around doing nothing) at this point.

On the other hand, I already have some code for a simple program (in C)
that automatically uses usplash or console to get a passphrase from a
user. Perhaps it is time to dust it off, add fifo as a third input method
and add it to cryptsetup.

right, i guess in c this could be done, one thread could read from stdin
while another thread reads from the fifo. and atomicity/locking should
be less of an issue there.

It should make writing keyscripts simpler and should allow this ssh
support to be written as a keyscript...in addition, we could remove some
special cases from the initramfs script as that binary could be used as
the keyscript when no particular keyscript has been defined (meaning we
always run a keyscript and can move some of the usplash special cases
from the initramfs script).

right, in this case the 'calling cryptsetup and typing in the password'
case would be one (standard/default/shipped) keyscript (that's what i
meant by 'removing the non-keyscript cryptsetup part' from the
cryptroot-script).

I have exams on 4:th, 5:th, 6:th and 12:th of March, so I won't have time
to hack on that for another week or two though (not intended to try your
patience Chris :))

well, no prob for me, as i've got working packages (now even supporting
multiple crypttargets! ;) ) i'm using for etch and lenny installations
for quite a while now...

i just thought this is certainly an issue for quite some people out
there... i wondered what the cases-per-day rate of incidents where
somebody sits some hundereds or thousands of kilometers away from his
box that waits for his cryptroot passphrase at the console might be...
so i felt kind of obliged to provide the solution and the corresponding
amount of work to the community, too. i guess i can rest my conscience
now... :)

On an unrelated note...what host key does the dropbear daemon use in the
initramfs?

in the current dropbear patch the mkinitramfs takes the host- and
authentication-keys from /etc/initramfs-tools and copies them to the
initramfs.

if they aren't already there, the mkinitramfs run will create them.
i.e. the installer could create them on installation, they can be
exchanged as needed, and they don't change over mkinitramfs-runs.
to log in, the secret authentication key from /etc/initramfs-tools is
needed (and the hostkey should be compared/fingerprint checked/added to
known_hosts).

If you want to do iptables stuff, get iptables-dev.

This header file is not part of the iproute package, maybe it should be fixed
up - but file a bug against that package. On the other hand, this i a linux
kernel header and I know they have pretty strict rules on headers including
other headers to avoid circular dependencies or something like that.
Please check what the policy is before filing random bugs without real use.

Seems like we have a more general problem here. Maybe I'm doing it
wrong, though - but isn't a header in /usr/include expected to be usable
 anyway ?

Unless you have a real use for any of the headers, I think removing most of
them is the solution. I could only identify libnetlink.h as a header
experting anything that's actually useful to external programs. Out of
curiosity I googled for iproute libnetlink.a rpm and the rpm package of
iproute seems to build a libnetlink-devel package which only contains
libnetlink.a and libnetlink.h, not exporting anything else (in that package,
don't know how to check which binary packages a SRPM builds)...

Including libnetlink.h seems to work just fine, so unless anyone finds
anything else usable in iproute-dev I guess this should be treated as
a wishlist request to please remove cruft ( == everything except
libnetlink.{a,h} ) from the iproute-dev package.
Less urgent, so I'll leave it until I return from my trip and have another
look at the whole problem with more time at hand then.

Bug#467105: ATI driver: use of Xv causes one monitor to be repeatedly blanked

Why is gxine calling the DPMS hooks for the monitors?
It's designed to allow blanking when nothing is being played or the
stream is paused; on starting or resuming playback, it is intended that
gxine will unblank the display automatically.
  [snip]

Also, I don't want it to ever be able to fail to restore the DPMS
settings – by not altering them, there's nothing to restore. This does
require ensuring that the blank timer never reaches 0 (unless it's set
   ludicrously low).

But why does it do it repeatedly?

  See above.

that's what causes the blinking. it should do it once, or am I missing
   something?

If crtc1 is already on, why touch crtc0 at all? (Also, if crtc0 is in some
state other than 'on', why switch it off?)

This is a bug in certain radeons where you have to enable crtc1 before
crtc0 or you get a blank screen. I'll see if I can dig up some more
info on which ones are affect and maybe I can narrow the range.

(Tweaking gxine to take more notice of DPMSInfo()'s output should fix one
  side of this bug...)

Do other video players have the same problem?
Any which use the same methods will, since xset dpms force on is
   sufficient to trigger the problem.

when you run xset dpms force on does the blinking continue after you run
it or does it happen once?

  Once.

Ok. thanks.

Less urgent, so I'll leave it until I return from my trip and have another
look at the whole problem with more time at hand then.

I agree, considering these headers will never work anymore since libiptc
is gone. I marked this bug as important because I had to deal with a
(internal) third-party application which uses this header: it used to
compile before libiptc was removed, but not after. I guess including the
header in the application was wrong in the first place.

Bug#465725: xserver-xorg-video-intel: correct display dimensions found by EDID but incorrect values used

Where does the incorrect size of 367x275 mm come from? How can I make my

I have a Dell 1600x1200 LCD screen connected via VGA.

Bug#426013: Problems with specific certificate/key (Debian Bug #426013)

Conclusion: Likely not a GnuTLS problem.

I think that this conclusion was built too fast, but we do not have
 sufficient information to know this.

The original reporter has said in the mean time that there are no
non-ascii chars in the file and that there are no CRLF issues here.
Currently, it is suspected that GnuTLS has issues with the fact that
the certificate is a wildcard certificate.

By reading this report, I'm really curious which gnutls version is used,
and

whether the gnutls-serv and exim are linked on the same version of
gnutls.
Does this occur if exim is linked on gnutls 2.2?

I'm using gnutls 2.0.4 at present (this is the current debian testing
version). Is it possibly a known issue with this version? I can not
install the new version at present, as this is a production server. I
will be able to test this if you think it will correct the issue.

For reference, gnutls-serv and gnutl-client work with this cert/key
pair. I can run the server fine using;

gnutls-serv --debug 5 --x509keyfile myhost_net.key --x509certfile myhost_net.crt

And the client can connect using;

gnutls-cli -p 5556 mail.myhost.net

however, when using certtool -i my key file failes with the base 64
decoding error.

certtool: Import error: Base64 decoding error.

debfile doesn't understand the new package format that uses data.tar.bz2. You
can see this by using the dpkg-info script in the examples to try and read a

Another complication is that we may have lzma debs in the near future.
Ubuntu supports uploading them already, so it would be good to have

Attached (trivial) patch enables this behavior, but I dont know if variable

--mirror-bootstrap-* got renamed to --mirror-chroot-*; and the 'new'

Bug#466623: mysql-query-browser: ui locks up when selecting default schema

2008-02-27 Thread Adam Majer
severity 466623 important
thanks

This is not grave. For example, I can select any schema on my MySQL
server just fine and execute queries which means it doesn't fail for
all. I'll upload the fix regardless of the severity though.

Also, does the following help?

Enabling the xfs server on fc8 solves the problem.
  sudo /sbin/service xfs start

I do also have some questions about your installation of the database
server.

 1. Is it localhost or somewhere else?
 2. What version of MySQL server are you using?

- Adam

Bug#468098: Package avant-window-navigator should have plugin/applets

2008-02-27 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi Bertrand,

It's a very good idea to introduce 3D dock in Debian. I tried to compile
plugins and applets for this one found here :
 http://wiki.awn-project.org/Awn_Extras
and unfortunetly the configure can't find awn (I didn't try that hard)...
You should try to install libawn-dev and python-awn and try to compile
them again.

So I guess it would be very nice to have these as an official Debian
package. The navigator must be lonely like this :-)
Yes, I plan to packages them, but there is more problems than in the bar
itself.

By the way I got applets here (but it's an old 1.9 version) :
 deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/deb4gilir/avant-window-navigator/
 unstable main
It's a very old repository which I used to test my packages before including
them in Debian.
It's not a good idea to use it now :)

 Thanks,
 Bertrand

Kind regards,

Julien Lavergne

Bug#359213: pykerberos in experimental now has GSSWrap/Unwrap support

 Hi,
upstream applied our pykerberos patches to a separate branch in SVN and
I've uploaded a version with this to experimental. I could NMU a version
off offlineimap with GSSAPI support too. The GSSAPI patch is fully
optional so nothing should break if it's applied and python-kerberos
 isn't installed.
 Cheers,

That'd be nice; I'd be happy to test, if that helps.

Bug#248061: some link detection code all ready there

2008-02-27 Thread John Morrissey
On Fri, Nov 09, 2007 at 11:50:32AM +0100, Geert Stappers wrote:
After some research, I found out that my eth1 indeed had no MII ioctl
support. So the installer was right to ask for choosing a NIC.

People with multiple NICs, that do have MII ioctl support,
in their installed system and see that the live interface is detected,
please be carefull with closing this bugreport, because it is merged
 with other bugreports.

Confirming that link detection works is appreciated.

We have a number of Dell PowerEdge machines that do not indicate which
interface has link when running d-i. dmesg(8) says the adapters are:

eth0: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet
eth1: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit Ethernet

and mii-tool(8) does detect the presence or absence of link:

eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok
eth1: no link

These interfaces take a while to negotiate a link, probably because spanning
tree is enabled on the switch ports they're attached to, so it necessarily
takes a while for the port to enter the forwarding state. Is there a way to
have d-i/netcfg sleep for a longer (configurable?) period of time before
assuming no link has been negotiated?

Let me know if you're going to fix this (along with the FTBFS with gcc

Bug#468183: ITP: monkey -- small webserver based on the HTTP/1.1 protocol

 * Package name: monkey

Don't include the name of the package in the short description. Also,
HTTP/1.1 protocol is more something for the long description.

Description: light-weight web server

Monkey is a Web Server written in C based on the HTTP/1.1 protocol. The
objective is to develop a fast, efficient, small and easy to configure
 webserver.
Although it is very small and does not need much system resources, it
has a lot of nice features like Multithreading, Mimetype Support,
Virtualhosts, CGI PHP, Basic Security features (Deny by URL + IP)

The language the server is written in is not important. Use the debtags
system to annotate the package with that kind of information. Also,
don't use subjective wording like nice features. There are also too
much capitals in your description. I suggest the following:

Monkey is a small, fast, and easily configurable HTTP/1.1 compliant web
server. It uses multi-threading and has support for MIME, virtual
hosts, CGI and PHP. It offers basic security features, such as denying
access to certain URLs for certain IP addresses.

Hi Philip,

this issue with EXA on 855 should have been fixed in recent versions,
as far as I know. Can you please test with the intel driver version
2.2.1 (available in unstable) and report the result? Make sure you use
the default EXA AccelMethod, and include the corresponding X log in your

Bug#468213: linux-latest-2.6: please enable USB_PERSIST

2008-02-27 Thread Eric Cooper
Package: linux-latest-2.6
Severity: wishlist

On portable devices (laptops, PDAs) with memory card readers, it's
convenient to use a memory card for a filesystem like /home, or a swap
partition. But without USB_PERSIST, one can't suspend and resume
these machines, because the memory card's device will change.
Enabling USB_PERSIST in the standard Debian kernels would fix this.

Although USB_PERSIST is described as dangerous, I argue that it
really isn't very:
Note that even when CONFIG_USB_PERSIST is set, the persist feature
will be applied only to those devices for which it is enabled. You
can enable the feature by doing (as root):
echo 1 /sys/bus/usb/devices/.../power/persist
(source: Documentation/usb/persist.txt)

seems like your problem is/was a bug in ldap itself.

Thanks for your help! It's surprisingly grateful to discover that someone
takes a look at bug reports which were submitted a year ago.

The problem was indeed, as stated in that bug report, that /etc/nsswitch.conf
had mode 600. Changing permissions to 644 solved the problem.

I wonder why a permissions problem would result in an assertion failure. But,
anyway, it's fixed now.

However, the ldap-nss.c assertion failure, doesn't seem to be fixed yet. I run
a fully updated debian stable, and the problem persits
when /etc/nsswitch.conf has mode 600 and shadow is set to compat ldap.
