I experienced the problem last night with the volatile packages: freshclam went berserk and took -milter and -daemon with it. Bug#474671: dpkg-shlibdeps: should detect i386 binaries on amd64
Package: dpkg-dev Severity: wishlist Tags: dpkg-shlibdeps I came across a package where the upstream tarball contained some i386 binaries on it which it did not clean but did install in its makefile. The result was that when building the package on amd64, I got the following confusing error message in a minimal build chroot: dh_shlibdeps -prubiks dpkg-shlibdeps: failure: couldn't find library libc.so.6 needed by debian/rubiks/usr/bin/optimal (its RPATH is ''). Note: libraries are not searched in other binary packages that do not have any shlibs or symbols file. To help dpkg-shlibdeps find private libraries, you might need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH. dh_shlibdeps: command returned error code 512 make: *** [binary-predeb-IMPL/rubiks] Error 1 If libc6-i386 is installed, dpkg-dhlibdeps terminates without errors, and ldd will correctly claim the binary was linked against /lib32/libc.so.6. I realize that this represents a bug in the package, but it'd be nice if dpkg-shlibdeps provided a better error message in this case. -Tim Abbott -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#474568: iaxclient: FTBFS: error: speex/speex_preprocess.h: No such file or directory
This one appears to have more problems than just needing to link against libspeexdsp. It's also directly accessing members of private structures (which have since gone away). The code in question is in input_postprocess() of audio_encode.c: /* Analog AGC: Bring speex AGC gain out to mixer, with lots of hysteresis */ /* use a higher continuation threshold for AAGC than for VAD itself */ if ( !silent && iaxci_silence_threshold != 0.0f && (iaxci_filters & IAXC_FILTER_AGC) && (iaxci_filters & IAXC_FILTER_AAGC) && st->speech_prob > 0.20f ) { static int i = 0; i++; if ( (i & 0x3f) == 0 ) { const float loudness = st->loudness2; if ( loudness > 8000.0f || loudness < 4000.0f ) { const float level = iaxc_input_level_get(); if ( loudness > 16000.0f && level > 0.5f ) { /* lower quickly if we're really too hot */ iaxc_input_level_set(level - 0.2f); } else if ( loudness > 8000.0f && level >= 0.15f ) { /* lower less quickly if we're a bit too hot */ iaxc_input_level_set(level - 0.1f); } else if ( loudness < 4000.0f && level <= 0.9f ) { /* raise slowly if we're cold */ iaxc_input_level_set(level + 0.1f); } } } } I'm not really sure why this code should not go away entirely and instead just use the speex AGC api itself to to this. This doesn't look like a very stable mechanism. Fixing this should be discussed with the upstream author, who presumably had their reasons at the time. Bug#474668: korganizer: weird calendar colors after upgrade
Package: korganizer Version: 4:3.5.9-2 Severity: minor After the latest upgrade in testing the colors were very strange; in particular, items from my main calendar were a dark red, giving an alarming impression. Looking a little closer, I saw that each calendar, as displayed in the lower left, had a color. I think I had them colored before, but not with these colors. I also suspected the problem was the result of upgrading in a running KDE 3.5.8 session, although I had shut down korganizer (and daemon) before the upgrade. However, logging out and back in did not help. I was able to customize the color to something more reasonable in the calendars box on the lower left. I'm reporting this because the effect was quite jarring at first, and also because it might indicate something more serious (like other settings getting wiped out) going on underneath. As far as I can tell, all else is well. I have 4 different calendars. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-6-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages korganizer depends on: ii kdelibs4c2a 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-2+b1 core libraries and binaries for al ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.20-1Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libaudio21.9.1-2 Network Audio System - shared libr ii libc62.7-6 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontconfig1 2.5.0-2 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.5-1+b1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.3.0-2 GCC support library ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libidn11 1.4-1 GNU libidn library, implementation ii libjpeg626b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkcal2b4:3.5.9-2 KDE calendaring library ii libkdepim1a 4:3.5.9-2 KDE PIM library ii libkmime24:3.5.9-2 KDE MIME interface library ii libkpimexchange1 4:3.5.9-2 KDE PIM Exchange library ii libkpimidentities1 4:3.5.9-2 KDE PIM user identity information ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-3 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3-mt3:3.3.8b-5 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-1+b1X11 Session Management library ii libstdc++6 4.3.0-2 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.0.3-7 X11 client-side library ii libxcursor1 1:1.1.9-1 X cursor management library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxft2 2.1.12-2FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi6 2:1.1.3-1 X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama1 2:1.0.3-1 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxrandr2 2:1.2.2-1 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-1 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii perl 5.8.8-12Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-11 compression library - runtime Versions of packages korganizer recommends: ii kghostview 4:3.5.9-1+b1 PostScript viewer for KDE -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#308312: 308312: colors for different calendars
If I understand the wish, I think it's been granted. Perhaps I don't, since the upstream bug is also still open. In 3.5.9 (and earlier) the bottom left shows a list of calendars. One can assign colors to them, and the items on that calendar show in the main display with that color. If the item has tags too, particularly multiple tags, I'm not sure what color wins. I don't know exactly what to do; it sounds like mixing system libs and vmware-shipped libs is becoming dangerous now that divergence is growing between the pseudo- dynamically linked binaries that vmware ships and the bleeding edge libraries in unstable. > > It also might be helpful when reporting problems like this if you could > > attach the output of > > > > pmap `pidof /usr/lib/vmware-server-console/bin/vmware-server-console` > > > > when vmware-server-console starts up correctly. Bug#468325: ITP - Urban Terror -- Quake 3 based first person shooter
Moin Moing, while Urban Terror does not rely on the Quake III Arena game data anymore, there is currently still a legal conflict between the (closed source!) Well, Debian ships libgtk2.0-0 and libgtk1.2... VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force happens to "force" the wrapper script to use VMware's "hokey" libs, not the systems. From wrapper-gtk24.sh, # When environment variable VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK is set to "force", we # forcefully use the 32-bit GTK+ 2.4 runtime environment (libraries + their # configuration files) that we ship. # # When environment variable VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK is set to "yes", we # thoughtfully use the 32-bit GTK+ 2.4 runtime environment (libraries + their # configuration files) that we ship. This works for all but the most broken # environments, so if we're guessing we try this. # # When environment variable VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK is set to "no", we use # the system's 32-bit GTK+ 2.4 runtime environment. # # When environment variable VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK is not set (the default), we # try to make an educated guess. I discovered a bug (missing dependency on module-init-tools) but that would only bite you after build, and in very rare cases. Bug#419950: eth ini. vs. ide ini.
As long as I have had this computer, since some 2.6.8 sarge kernel, I have occasional problems where the network goes bad, with these lines repeating forever in the syslog: Feb 14 06:44:10 legba kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out Feb 14 06:44:10 legba kernel: :00:0f.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed Sometimes the problem does not occur, and everything runs just fine until I reboot the system, even if I pound on the network, trying to make it fail. Sometimes the problem shows up, even with moderate network load, and the network is _very_ sluggish until I reboot. So far, this does not seem to depend on the kernel version. Each kernel I've tried is bad sometimes, and occasionally will boot up OK. After combing through the logs, I have found a pattern which correlates with my problems. It looks like when I have the problem, there is some overlapping of the initialization messages for hda and for eth0; and when the machine is booting OK and will not have a problem, these initialization messages are separated in the logs. Here are some sample logs: Here is an extract from dmesg on 2008-04-01, still running today with no problems: Linux Tulip driver version 1.1.13-NAPI (May 11, 2002) PCI: Enabling device :00:0f.0 (0114 -> 0117) ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKC] enabled at IRQ 10 PCI: setting IRQ 10 as level-triggered ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:0f.0[A] -> Link [LNKC] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10 tulip0: MII transceiver #1 config 1000 status 786d advertising 05e1. eth0: ADMtek Comet rev 17 at 00011400, 00:14:BF:5C:E1:35, IRQ 10. Package: iceweasel Version: 3.0~b5-1 Severity: normal OK, I know this package is experimental, but part of the reason why I'm trying it out is to improve the firefox 3 codebase by submitting bugs like this. I have not submitted an upstream bug as I cannot reproduce this bug on upstream. Everything seems to work fine (at least in regards to this problem) with the latest nightly build. To reproduce run: 1. MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 firefox -safe-mode http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625/winchest.html 2. select "continue in safe mode". 3. scroll down 4. observe ugly diagonal lines streaking across the page that remain there after you stop scrolling. I have observered this occuring on a few pages, but this is the only one I can remember off hand at the moment. It seems to happen more frequently on long pages. "-t Qt_3_3_8b" does not come from the > standard source packages. > > Phil As we say in New York, "Akhaa!" Thanks, that was exactly the clue I needed. This wasn't the fault of the distro, but the software package. Salomé comes in a package with its own SIP, Ot, omniORB, NetGen, etc., and its own set of default but non-standard build options. Removing the -t option you identified overcame the problem, now it works with sip 4.7.4 in Debian, which should be faithful to the original. I'll build the whole thing in the next day or two (which will require a couple more hours to finish the omniORB 4.0->4.1 port), and come back to this list if it gives me any further trouble. Bug#474658: compiz-gnome: replacing metacity with compiz is non-trivial
Package: compiz-gnome Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 Severity: important No complaints about the actual functionality of the package. It seems to work great. Running compiz --replace from within a regular gnome session does exactly as it is advertised to do. However, there really needs to be a straightforward way to make compiz your default window manager instead of metacity. Or better yet, make it the system-wide default window manager. I've read all sorts of terrible suggestions like adding an additional startup program via System->Preferences->Sessions which just executes the command "compiz --replace". The problem with this of course is that you have just wasted several CPU cycles starting metacity only to go and "replace" it with compiz. After several hours of searching I finally found that you can add the file ~/.gnomerc with the line export WINDOW_MANAGER=/usr/bin/compiz to create the desired effect, but this is not indicated anywhere in the documentation that I can find. Moreover, even if it was I don't believe that it should be necessary to consult the documentation merely to get the package working. I think usability would improve significantly especially for beginner users if the compiz-gnome package emulated the openbox package which gives an additional entry in the the "Session" menu of GDM for Gnome on top of openbox. Maybe this way we would loose fewer novices to Ubuntu ;) Kevin -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (600, 'unstable'), (300, 'testing'), (200, 'stable'), (100, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.23-amd64.016 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_GB) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages compiz-gnome depends on: ii compiz-gtk 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 OpenGL window and compositing mana ii libart-2.0- 2.3.20-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2- 2.22.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui 2.22.0-1 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.7-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.5.8-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libgconf2-4 2.22.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglib2.0- 2.16.2-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-de 2.22.0-1 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome-wi 1:2.22.0-2 Utility library for getting window ii libgnome2-0 2.20.1.1-1 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecan 2.20.1.1-1 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui- 2.20.1.1-1 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs 1:2.22.0-2 GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.9-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii liborbit2 1:2.14.12-0.1libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0 1.20.0-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt01.10-3 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-1+b1 X11 Session Management library ii libstartup- 0.9-1library for program launch feedbac compiz-gnome recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#474657: race condition on gdm stop after killing user procs
Package: gdm Version: 2.20.4-1 Severity: normal The simplest way to reproduce this bug on my hardware is to create the following shell script (killdisplay.sh): #!/bin/sh pkill -u kevmitch invoke-rc.d gdm stop Where "kevmitch" should be replaced by the user logged in graphically via gdm. su to root from that users display and run # nohup ./killdisplay.sh Gdm will indeed stop, but you won't find any framebuffer output, i.e., you can't log on to the console anymore. Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc don't do anything. However since I happen to have an ACPI button mapped to /etc/init.d/gdm start, I was able to restart the daemon which does start X again and runs "normally". The frame buffer is still dead however and will remain so until reboot no matter what I do. This does not happen if I modify the above script to sleep for 1 second in between killing the procs and stopping gdm: #!/bin/sh pkill -u kevmitch sleep 1 invoke-rc.d gdm stop This dumps you out on a functional framebuffer console as expected and desired, but gives the distubing kernel message [ 150.445462] gdm[4927]: segfault at 000800871ff8 rip 003108c5692f rsp 7fff8a9dbac0 error Increasing the sleep interval to 2 prevents the above segfault from occuring. Bug#474652: slapd: Problem with LSB header in init.d script
Package: slapd Version: 2.4.7-6.1 Severity: important Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: incorrect-dependency I just checked the boot order in unstable on a machine with dependency based boot sequencing enabled, and discovered a problem with the init.d scripts provided in this package. It refuses to install when using dependency based boot sequencing. The reason is that it depend on syslog, which isn't provided by any init.d script. It should use the virtual facility $syslog instead. So that seems not to be a good starting point. But, for a short time i was able to use elisa. Last week I added an external TV Screen and changed my xorg.conf to use the second monitor, (seperate X Server) and after that i was able to use elisa, but only on my lcd not on the tv screen. But for now, elisa shows the same behaviour, also with tv screen connected. I will have a look at it, if i've some time left this week and play a little bit with the settings and maybe i can determine the xorg-settings on wich elisa (or pigment) fail or/and work. Bug#443606: Improvements for kbd?
Hello, I'm hitting the converse bug: now that linux 2.6.24 is unicode by default, the kbd scripts don't manage to set the 2-6 consoles back to 8bit. That becomes quite of a problem since that prevents from e.g. typing accented letters. Anton Zinoviev, le Wed 10 Oct 2007 01:37:01 +0300, a écrit : > Regarding #443606, the reason this problem happens is the following > fragment in /etc/init.d/console-screen.kbd.sh: > > if [ "$RUNLEVEL" = S ]; then > LIST_CONSOLES=0 > elif [ -z "$LIST_CONSOLES" ]; then > # Wait for getty to provide TTYs > sleep 3 > LIST_CONSOLES=`sed -e '/^ *#/d' /etc/inittab | grep 'tty[0-9]*$' | > awk - > F: '{printf "%s ", $1}'` > fi > > I have no idea why if RUNLEVEL is S (and it is S when the script is > invoked), then only the first console is configured. Maybe the intent was actually 1 (i.e. single user mode, in which only the first console is used), but then console-screen.kbd.sh should be also called in other levels, i.e. debian/rules should rather contain something like dh_installinit --init-script=console-screen.kbd.sh -r -u"start 01 1 2 3 4 5." > I also don't know the purpose of this "sleep 3" command. I'm also really wondering about it. So my guess is that the fix should be either using dh_installinit --init-script=console-screen.kbd.sh -r -u"start 01 1 2 3 4 5." in debian/rules, so that only the first console is setup in runlevel 1, or console-screen.kbd.sh should just drop the if [ "$RUNLEVEL" = S ] case. This wouldn't work because SUN's java (and others) do provide java2-runtime. If josm drops this dependency users might need to install a jvm they don't want to. It's also current policy to depend on the virtual package, also this should be changed in the future as far as i know. Regards, Andreas signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#467298: updating etch -> volatile helps
Hello, I think that updating to volatile doesn't really fixes the problem: I've experienced the same problems as mentioned above and updated to volatile about 3-4 weeks ago: ~# apt-show-versions |grep clamav clamav-base/etch uptodate 0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1 clamav-daemon/etch uptodate 0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1 clamav-freshclam/etch uptodate 0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1 libclamav2/etch uptodate 0.91.2-1~volatile1 clamav/etch uptodate 0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1 libclamav3/etch uptodate 0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1 This worked fine until 30 minutes ago when clamav went down again with apparently the same problem. Bug#470863: ~/.fehbg: filenames are not "escaped" correctly which can lead to execution of malicious code
This is not a security hole. If you can modify a user's ~/.fehbg you can almost certainly edit other shell scripts in the user's home directory too. Furthermore, while it is possible for feh to write a destructive command to ~/.fehbg, it is extremely unlikely that a user will make it do so accidentally. Bug#474646: smime_keys doesn't handle mutt -Q tmpdir with ~
Package: mutt-patched Version: 1.5.17+20080114-1~bpo40+1 Not sure if this should be in mutt or mutt-patched, so sending it here for now. My .muttrc has: set tmpdir = /home/ramune/.tmp Due to this, mutt_Q in /usr/bin/smime_keys returns ~/.tmp for the tmpdir variable (and a few others, such as the S/MIME store, etc). As mutt translates the path to ~ instead of sending exactly what was in the .muttrc, smime_keys fails to create the temporary PEM file as it tries to open() the literal path ~/.tmp/smime/hash.0 instead of substituting /home/ramune for ~. I changed the muttrc to remove tildes after having problems with smime_keys, but it appears mutt still does substitutions. Having mutt print exactly what the user put into the ~/.muttrc would work as a work-around, but the smime_keys script should probably do tilde expansion as well. Debian/etch, i386 with mutt-patched from backports. If any additional information's needed, please let me know. Bug#474647: BadColor (invalid Colormap parameter) parameter on powerpc
Package: libgtk-vnc-1.0-0 Version: 0.3.4-2 Severity: normal Hi, I tried the experimental version of libgtk-vnc-1.0-0 on powerpc because of the endianness fix. Unfortunaly this version causes a BadColor error from X, while -1 worked fine modulo the color shifting: The program 'vinagre' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadColor (invalid Colormap parameter)'. (Details: serial 3645 error_code 12 request_code 1 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) However what often can happen is that the settings do not take because the values apply to things that are not there or they are overwritten. This usually happens with settings to network devices, for example. Bug#474644: libffi4-dev Provides: libffi-dev, but does not appear to actually be compatible
Package: libffi4-dev Version: 4.1.2-6 Severity: normal I have python-gobject-dev installed; python-gobject-dev Depends: on libffi-dev. On my system, this dependency was satisfied by libffi4-dev, because libffi4-dev Provides: libffi-dev. However, this leaves me with a broken python-gobject-dev package, because at least some operations seem to actually need libffi-dev; libffi4-dev doesn't work: # With libffi4-dev installed: $ pkg-config --libs --cflags pygobject-2.0 Package libffi was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libffi.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable Package 'libffi', required by 'PyGObject', not found # With libffi-dev installed instead: $ pkg-config --libs --cflags pygobject-2.0 -I/usr/include/pygtk-2.0 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0 (I'm not entirely sure whether this should be considered a bug in libffi or python-gobject; this is just my best guess.) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". That's why I'm downgrading to severity important). I tested it on my laptop and suspend works just fine without chvt (using uswusp myself).
