Bug#356492: ITP: spout -- Tiny abstract b&w 2D cave-shooter

2008-09-10 Thread Gürkan Sengün

Hello Javier

This game so rocks, i played it long before it was ITP'd, and still
it's not in Debian. Unbelievable? Disappointing? I don't know what it
is...

Are you still working on it? Would you mind me finishing the package
and maintaining it in Debian? I don't mind co-maintainers...

Man, I have an ITP I haven't touched in months, but I am coming back to
health, so yes, I would like to finish the package myself, but yes, I would
also love to have you as a co-maintainer.

Is that good? I am sorry I haven't been able to get it in post-Etch, but
working with you would definitely be good. So let's make it work.

Good to hear, get well soon. What's your hiscore?

I have the latest upload at
http://sid.ethz.ch/debian/spout/

The reject reasons are in the bug number and should be easy to fix.

Yours,
Guerkan

But more and more people want to be able to change distribution wide
default: Emdebian wants to enable "nodocs" and "nocheck" by default, other
want to be able to enable hardening options by default and I agree with
them that official support for such a facility is desirable.

See also #498355 and #498380 for such requests from Emdebian.

*I've devised a simple workaround which will at least allow aptitude to
finish the job it's doing, although it doesn't address the core issue and
will likely leave several package files undeleted when using aptitude's
purge/remove command..

(I'm guessing it might be that some of python-central's syntax was designed
for python v2.5, instead of 2.4) .. Anyway here goes:

Simply change line 696 in /usr/bin/pycentral (in the python-central package)
from:

"if self.private_files:"

To:

"if self.private_files and
hasattr(default_runtime,'remove_byte_code'):"

You have two solutions:
- do like all other libraries and generate a dependency on libc6 for
 private symbols as well
- add "-xglibc-private" to the dpkg-shlibdeps calls in the glibc source
 package to skip that dependency

I would go for the second solution.

cairo_draw_with_xlib() is part of mozilla's codebase
(firefox, mozilla, xulrunner whatever) not cairo and as far as I can
find, there is no cairo_draw_with_xlib() at line 329 of cairo-xlib-utils.c
at least as far as
http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/gfx/thebes/src/cairo-xlib-utils.c
is concerned - whatever tree I choose.

Where the matching source is, I can't say.

Isn't it suspicious these are being called with a NULL X Display in dpy?

Seems to be a firefox/mozilla/xulrunner bug to me.

Bug#238833: Processed: please read the bugreport until the end to understand why I reassigned this bug

If you need a fallback Unicode font, you can look at the
"xfonts-unifont" and "ttf-unifont" packages in unstable & testing.
I'm currently maintaining the "unifont" package. The current version
of those packages contains a glyph for every visible code point in the
Unicode 5.1 Basic Multilingual Plane. The TrueType font will look
best at 12pt (and might look outright unacceptable at smaller point
sizes).

However, beware the Jabberwock, er, I mean the combining marks. The
xfonts-unifont font encodes glyphs for them, but they are not
superimposed on a preceding glyph. The ttf-unifont font displays
combining marks superimposed over a following glyph, rather than over
the preceding glyph as per the Unicode Standard. So combining marks
aren't handled in accordance with the Unicode Standard in either
version yet, but at least they only form a small fraction of the total
Basic Multilingual Plane.

I made a new version of the TrueType font that ought to render
combining marks in accordance with the Unicode Standard.
Unfortunately, the font renders perfectly under Windows XP but not
under GNOME on Debian. I haven't tried it under KDE and would be
interested in feedback if someone wants to try it under KDE. The new
version of the TrueType font is at

http://unifoundry.com/unifont-5.1.20080907.ttf.gz

(You'll have to gunzip it before you use it.)

I just barely got the current version of the "unifont" package in with
the lenny freeze, and I haven't assembled yet another version with the
above 2008-09-07 TrueType font. It was about all I could do to finish
all the missing glyph renderings before the freeze -- there wasn't
time for everything I would have liked to accomplish.

If there is interest though, I could try to have one more version
brought into lenny that includes the very latest TrueType font. One
reason I didn't bother so far is because its combining marks don't
render correctly under GNOME, and I think it is probably a more
generic X11 bug not specific to GNOME (though I haven't had time to
check the font with KDE). The combining marks in that latest TrueType
font do have an advance width of zero so I am fairly confident that
the bug is not with the TrueType font. See bug #497326 for more
mention of this. I also posted a message about TTF Unicode combining
marks on the debian-x list about half a week ago.

I also have a file containing a list of every code point in the
Unicode 5.1 Basic Multilingual Plane that should have zero advance
width (i.e., the combining marks), with one code point per line in
hexadecimal. The file is at

http://unifoundry.com/pub/combining-5.1.dat

I entered all the data in that file, and I'm placing it in the public
domain to help spread support for Unicode.

Bug#498562: ITP: last-align -- genome-scale comparison of biological sequences.

2008-09-10 Thread Charles Plessy
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Charles Plessy <>

 Package name: last-align
 Version : 7
Upstream Author : Martin C. Frith and Paul B. Horton <>
 URL : http://last.cbrc.jp/
 License : GPL-3+
 Programming Lang: C++
Description : genome-scale comparison of biological sequences.

LAST is software for comparing and aligning sequences, typically DNA or
protein sequences. LAST is similar to BLAST, but it copes better with very
large amounts of sequence data. Here are two things LAST is good at:
.
 * Comparing large (e.g. mammalian) genomes.
 * Mapping lots of sequence tags onto a genome.
.
The main technical innovation is that LAST finds initial matches based on
their multiplicity, instead of using a fixed size (e.g. BLAST uses 11-mers).
This allows us to map tags to genomes without repeat-masking, without becoming
overwhelmed by repetitive hits. To find these variable-sized matches, it uses
a suffix array (inspired by Vmatch). To achieve high sensitivity, it uses a
discontiguous suffix array, analogous to spaced seeds.

The package is almost ready, but I will wait that GCC 4.3 issues are solved
upstream. Manpages are missing and I will not write some during the freeze.

This package will be part of a larger effort to make Debian the best platform
for large-scale genomics.

Have a nice day,

Bug#498558: libgdk-pixbuf2-ruby1.8: scale() of Gdk::Pixbuf leaks memory

2008-09-10 Thread Johan Walles
Package: libgdk-pixbuf2-ruby1.8
Version: 0.17.0~rc1-4
Severity: important

Run the below program on some image file:

"
#!/usr/bin/ruby

require 'gtk2'

unless ARGV.size == 1
 puts "Syntax: pixbufmemleak.rb "
 exit 1
end

imagefile = ARGV[0]
puts "Test image: #{imagefile}"

pixbuf = Gdk::Pixbuf.new(imagefile)
while true
 pixbuf = pixbuf.scale(1000, 1000)
end

Current behavior: Ruby's memory usage increases by about 200Mb per second.

Expected behavior: Not much, definitely no memory increase.

Bug#498557: cpio: modification time not preserved when -m option used vfat -> smbfs

2008-09-10 Thread Arthur Marsh
Package: cpio
Version: 2.9-13
Severity: normal

I was attempting to copy from a local vfat filesystem to a remote
ntfs-3g filesystem preserving the modification times of files.

The source filesystem is mounted as:

/dev/hda1 on /victoriac type vfat (rw,uid=65534,gid=65534,umask=000)

The destination filesystem is mounted as:

//10.0.0.5/bigstore on /bigstore type cifs (rw,mand)

I attempted a cpio first by doing:

cd "/victoriac/some-directory"
find . -print0|cpio -pmdv0 /bigstore/some-other-directory

but found the modification times of directories and files moved set to
the present time.

I also tried:

find . -print0|cpio -p -mdv0 /bigstore/some-other-directory

with the same result.

However, if I logged on to the remote system which has the source and
destination filesystems mounted as follows:

Source:

//10.0.0.1/victoriac on /victoriac type cifs (rw,mand)

Destination:

/dev/hda5 on /bigstore type fuseblk (rw,allow_other,blksize=4096)

the directory modification times were set to the present and the file
modification times were preserved as the old times when using the
following command:

cd /victoriac/somedir
find . -print0|cpio -p -mdv0 /bigstore/some-other-dir

This also preserved file modification times:

find . -print0|cpio -pmdv0 /bigstore/some-other-dir

Is this a bug with cpio, or limitation of the vfat, smbfs, or ntfs-3g
filesystem, or combination of the above?

Perhaps there is such precedent. My point remains that the error
message is quite unhelpful for addressing the problem; that ikiwiki's
implementation, or its packaging, or both, should be modified to
improve this; and that's what this bug report is about.

My suggestion for the 'Depends' was only for the librar{y,ies} that
you referred to as necessary for *all* external plugins to function.

In other words, if I want users to have (in this case) the 'rst'
plugin working, it is reasonable to expect that I'll know to install
support for reStructuredText.

It's not reasonable for me to know that one arbitrary set of ikiwiki
plugins needs extra libraries because of an implementation detail in
ikiwiki, while others work fine without that. Knowledge like that is
the responsibility of the programmer (by detecting the problem at
run-time) or the package manager (by declaring dependencies as
necessary for the implementation).

> And yet even with this change, ikiwiki could still be configured in
> ways that make it complain about missing packages that are not in
> its dependencies

If it complained "about missing packages", this bug report would be
resolved. That's not what happens, though: it spits an error at
run-time that occurs for one plugin but not for others, and there's no
indication (for someone not knowledgeable about the implementation) of
what package needs to be installed to resolve the error.

> The approach I've chosen for ikiwiki is to make packages that all,
> or all except for very unusual configurations need be in the

I've no complaint about the use of the dependencies; what you describe
above seems like the priorities are well chosen.

That's orthogonal to the point of this bug report, which remains: The
error message when one of these library packages is missing gives no
clue to a user ignorant about the implementation as to why one plugin
breaks and others don't, and what to do about it.

Sure, but we're in the final stages of the freeze right now, so uploading
new toolchain releases isn't the wisest thing we can do immediately.
Is there something in particular in this one that you need or that fixes
some urgent bug in the distro packages?

Cheers,
Ron

It's actually not counterintuitive for minor package features or unusual
configuration options to require suggested packages be installed. This is
a common pattern in debian, with countless examples.

The hypothetical ikiwiki-plugins package would depend on rather a lot of
stuff, that would be unlikely to be used by most users who only use a plugin
or two from it:

libsearch-xapian-perl, xapian-omega, librpc-xml-perl, libtext-wikiformat-perl,
python, python-docutils, polygen, tidy, libxml-feed-perl, libmailtools-perl,
perlmagick, libfile-mimeinfo-perl, libcrypt-ssleay-perl,
libtext-typography-perl, libtext-csv-perl, libdigest-sha1-perl, graphviz,
libnet-amazon-s3-perl, sparkline-php, texlive, dvipng

But, even assuming that the VCS plugins and other core plugins (inline,
etc) are not included in ikiwiki-plugins, it would not be uncommon to
need to install it, pulling all of the above in. (And I don't think that
splitting things up to ever finer levels of granularity to deal with
that is a good path.)

And yet even with this change, ikiwiki could still be configured in ways
that make it complain about missing packages that are not in its
dependencies, including:

gcc, libc6-dev, subversion, git-core, tla, bzr, mercurial, monotone,
libxml-simple-perl, libnet-openid-consumer-perl, liblwpx-paranoidagent-perl,
libtimedate-perl, libcgi-formbuilder-perl, libcgi-session-perl,
libmail-sendmail-perl, libauthen-passphrase-perl

You certianly don't want to install all of these as hard dependencies, but
based on the configuration various ones will be needed.

The approach I've chosen for ikiwiki is to make packages that all, or
all except for very unusual configurations need be in the Depends;
packages that a typical wiki will need be in the Recommends; and all
else in the Suggests.

Justification: fails to build from source

I'm declaring intent to NMU to correct FTBFS against libclamav5.
Sid has libclamav5 which has a different API than libclamav4, causing
this package to FTBFS from source.

I will attach the debdiff to the followup email

Bug#497605: Getting Debian to release the PowerPC port

2008-09-10 Thread Rogério Brito
Dear Paul,

I would like to ask you a few things:

* which is the official dtc git repository?
I ask it here because dtc.ozlabs.org doesn't seem to work, but this is
what is linked to from the page and the
device-tree-compiler package on Debian has an outdated page (it
seems). I already filed a bugreport to that package
 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=497605).

* where can I find the people responsible for glibc and gcc/g++ so that
I can fill in the empty fields at
 , so that
powerpc does not become "at risk" of not being released? Is the
powerpc port cared by some team in special or is it just a "unified"
 upstream?

Thanks in advance, Rogério Brito.

Bug#497270: Reviewing data in the debian-cd packages

2008-09-10 Thread Michael Schmitz

Hi,

I'll have to let Christian answer for the licensing of
cts_amiga_info.tar.gz. The rest of the amiga icons are in the d-i
repo. If these have clear licensing (I'm pretty sure they do) then
we should probably move them there too.

As I recall they were created either by or for Christian to use with
debian-cd. I don't believe they have a source form.

IIRC the initial .info files (icon data needed by AmigaOS in order to start
particular install shell scripts) were created by Frank Neumann. The others are
by Christian. All were intended for distribution with the install CDs (but
Christian should perhaps confirm that). My impression was that these files are
created by some sort of resource editor which is part of AmigaOS, so there's no
source (though the file format should not be too difficult to reverse engineer).

They probably shouldn't be living in tar archives anyway. :)

Perhaps not - there may be special permissions required for these files to be
properly recognized, though (at least that's the case for start scripts).

Christian has written a boot script that can fall back to a known good kernel
on unsuccessful boot, maybe that can be added to whatever package gets to
provide the icon files as well?

Michael

Bug#498553: [visualboyadvance-gtk] Package description is wrong

2008-09-10 Thread P M
Package: visualboyadvance-gtk
Version: 1.8.0-4
Severity: important

The description of this package is wrong. This package contains VBA with GTK
support, but the description says it "contains a version of VisualBoyAdvance
compiled with the original GUI-less SDL interface." This is the same
description as with the visualboyadvance package, which indeed contains the
GUI-less version.

yeah, that patch went in years ago. This is a more current report, but
might not be the same thing:
 http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdev&m=121674755618486&w=2

Your best bet maybe to file a bug upstream at
http://bugzilla.kernel.org. Did this start occuring after a kernel
upgrade? If so, you might be able to help find the problem by
bisecting - see http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernelReportingBugs for
more information.

The debian package texlive-pictures contains a latex package named curve

but probably in the same package that contains the latex resume package
(currently it is texlive-latex-extra).

The current version is 19, and both the repo and the download are found on
sourceforge.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-mac68k

As to how it is generated, Penguin is a MacOS application and it is built
under MacOS. Likewise BootX, the oldworld powermac bootloader. Neither can
be built with Linux.

Bug#409261: squid: Different approach

2008-09-10 Thread Flavio Cruz
Package: squid
Version: 2.7.STABLE3-1
Followup-For: Bug #409261

Here's a new patch that takes some different approaches:

- MAXPATHLEN: Fixed by making available the fallback/default value already used
by squid in the hea
der squid.h to header util.h and including it where needed.
- Host naming scheme not recognized by config.sub, changing it to
DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE fixes the problem, without messing around config.sub.
- Hurd has pthreads by some time now, so use them.

You can see that I check it and then a few moments later it 'de-checks' itself.

I have the compiz plugin package installed alongside all three compiz fusion

That commit has been reverted before 0.15.1, so will presumably be

This issue appears to have been introduced by 3.11, in the fix for
#489414. Since it appears that the entire purpose of bootcd-ia64 is to
provide this file (and pull in the dependencies it requires), it looks
like the correct fix is to drop the bootcd-ia64.lib from bootcd and
only ship it in bootcd-ia64.

Package: krusader

Hi,

Krusader makes two entries in the Debian menu system.

>From a KDE perspective, one entry is under "System" with "File Manager

However the second entry is under "Utilities" with "File Manager

For the sake of consistensy could you consider moving both desktop
entries into the same segment (either Utilities or System) as it seems
an oversight to file them in two different places.

Bug#497270: Reviewing data in the debian-cd packages

Wow I never caught that those files were in debian-cd.

macinstall-cd.tar.gz contains an old version of Penguin, the mac
bootloader, which is packaged in contrib (19-3). I'm pretty sure I
used the penguin package when I was working on debian-cd for etch.

The source for penguin 17 is at
.

They probably shouldn't be living in tar archives anyway. :)

Thanks,

Stephen

Bug#489414: patch

kthxbye

This issue appears to have been introduced by 3.11, in the fix for
#489414. Since it appears that the entire purpose of bootcd-ia64 is to
provide this file (and pull in the dependencies it requires), it looks
like the correct fix is to drop the bootcd-ia64.lib from bootcd and
only ship it in bootcd-ia64.

patch attached.

Hi,

Maybe the alioth project could consider a rename, now that it is
focusing on ledgersmb? I stumbled upon it due to luck more than
anything else.

That's a good point; hard-coding the package name in the error message
may be a poor choice. That's only one possible resolution, though.

I maintain that the error message (as initially reported) is unhelpful
for knowing what's wrong. The 'Suggests' control field is good, but
the error message doesn't lead the user to look there. If a plugin is
installed by the 'ikiwiki' package, it's rather counter-intuitive that
the plugin won't work at all until further packages are installed.

Perhaps the solution is to make the error message unnecessary, by
having the dependencies structured differently:

Since you say that certain libraries are required for any external
plugins to work, would it not make sense to have those external
plugins in a separate 'ikiwiki-plugins' package that itself depends on
the required libraries?

Then, 'ikiwiki' could 'Suggests: ikiwiki-plugins', and it would be
much clearer at install time that to get any plugins working, the
'ikiwiki-plugins' package must be installed.

Kind of strange.

What about:

I don't think that encoding information about debian package names in

Everything seems to be working well except that after a certain period of time
of leaving firestarter running, it tends to dissapear. Or if it's minimized to
panel, then the panel icon dissapears!

Bug#498542: darcs-server: Doesn't work with Perl 5.10's stricter taint checks

Due to the general lack of interest in this CGI script both from
upstream developers and Debian users, the "darcs-server" package is
deprecated for Lenny and will be removed once Lenny+1 becomes Testing.
I expect to move it into /usr/share/doc/darcs in the main "darcs"
binary package. See http://bugs.debian.org/339770 for discussion.

(If you disagree with this plan, please send to the #339770 bug, not
this one.)

Since the darcs-server package doesn't appear to work with 5.10 anyway
without modification, should I "fast track" removing the darcs-server
package, so that it's not in Lenny?

Bug#498474: moreinfo

2008-09-10 Thread Lucio Crusca
Currently I have no access to the only box where I can reproduce this bug (it
is a fileserver at a customer's office). However I'll post here all the info
you ask as soon as I can access the server.

About the RC bug argument: I didn't even know that a grave bug is RC while an
important one isn't. I simply read the instructions that reportbug prints on
the screen: it says that the bug is grave when the package is completely
unusable, and that's exactly the situation on said server. Is it not a
bash-completion bug? Ok, I take your word, but please recognize it's not easy
for non-developers to identify the right package... a common user who takes
himself the time to report a bug could even think it's a bash bug (though a
minor one in that case). I think you developers/maintainers should be
thankful when someone reports a bug, instead of complaining about mistakes in
the bug report and arguing I deliberately raised the bug severity in hope to
get faster attention. I've read the reportbug instructions and thought twice
about what severity to choose and finally I choose what seemed the best fit
based on my observations. Is the "grave" severity badly described in
reportbug? Fix it! You are the developers after all!

Anyway, I don't understand how that can be a bug of a different package, but,
again, I take your word.

@David: I did not hack my code, I suppose that "-sh" is not to be looked for
inside the code, but I think it's only the interpreter of the script. Maybe
the users on that server have /bin/sh as default shell, I can't check right
now. Maybe also I'm saying meaningless things...

Lucio.

Please do!

I never did, as I didn't have the time to look into the implications.
However, the package has been removed, see

As to defoma's future, who knows, but I suppose it's best to keep this

Bug#498307: manpages-dev: Poor stat(2) wording implies incorrect units for struct stat.st_blocks

2008-09-10 Thread Chris Frost

The relevant stat(2) struct stat snippet is:
struct stat {
...
blksize_t st_blksize; /* blocksize for filesystem I/O */
blkcnt_t st_blocks; /* number of blocks allocated */
...
}

The two fields use the same word, "block", with two different meanings.

In particular, to make use of the st_blocks field, "number of blocks
allocated", one may need to know the size of a "block". Given
st_blksize's description, "blocksize for filesystem I/O", it appears
that its purpose is to describe the size of the block unit used for
st_blocks.

Does this convey why I find these fields vague?

A suggestion for their description:
st_blksize; /* file system I/O block size */
st_blocks; /* disk blocks (e.g., sectors) allocated */

Or if st_blocks is always in units of 512 B, this may be more clear:
st_blocks; /* number of 512 B blocks allocated */

Bug#498544: guile-1.8-dev: When unistalled, seems to remove guile-config not belonging to it.

2008-09-10 Thread Omer Zak
Package: guile-1.8-dev
Severity: minor

In my system I had guile-1.6-dev. One day, I installed guile-1.8-dev
(with other packages) in parallel to guile-1.6, and later removed it.
Then I found that the file /usr/bin/guile-config disappeared.
Without direct proof of this, I suspect that this was caused by
installing or removing guile-1.8-dev.

The file reappeared only after reinstalling guile-1.6-dev
using: aptitude reinstall guile-1.6-dev

Bug#498543: ecryptfs utilities assume that "/sbin" is in PATH

2008-09-10 Thread situert situert
Package: ecryptfs-utils
Version: 58-1
Severity: Important

Hello,

Some of the utilities included in the ecryptfs-utils package assume
that "/sbin" is in the PATH environment variable. This happens to be
true in Ubuntu, which, I am guessing, is the upstream. However,
because Debian does not include "/sbin" and "/usr/sbin" in PATH for
non-root users by default, the shell-script utilities included in
ecryptfs-utils package exit with errors stating that the relevant
executable cannot be found.

Here is a list of the shell scripts affected:

src/utils/ecryptfs-mount-private
src/utils/ecryptfs-setup-private
src/utils/ecryptfs-umount-private

As one can see by looking at the shell scripts, all of them contain
references to "mount.ecryptfs_private" and "umount.ecryptfs_private"
(which are installed in "/sbin") without including the "/sbin/" in
the calling line.

This problem affects users of the "Private" directory a lot as one
is forced to include "/sbin" in the PATH before doing anything with
ecryptfs.

Attached is a patch which fixes this issue.

Regards,

- situert

Bug#497270: Reviewing data in the debian-cd packages

2008-09-10 Thread Steve McIntyre
Daniel's helpful bug (#497270) points out that we have embedded copies
of isolinux in the debian-cd package. It's prompted me to look for
other embedded data, and I've found the following list:

tack:~/debian/debian-cd/debian-cd$ find . -type f | xargs file | \

awk '{print $1}'

./data/lenny/vesamenu.c32:
./data/lenny/isolinux.bin:
./data/sarge/sbm.bin.gz:
./data/sarge/isolinux.bin:

Of those:

* isolinux.bin and vesamenu.c32 come from the syslinux package
* sbm.bin.gz comes from the sbm package

I can add code to extract the appropriate binaries from each package
at CD build time, in much the same way as we use debootstrap from the
archive. It'll slow things down a little, but that's not as important
as following licensing.

There's another implication, though... Normal weekly builds will
automatically pick up the appropriate source as part of the source
CD/DVD builds, so they're OK. However, more painfully, the current
daily netinst/businesscard builds don't produce source images. If
things change quickly in the syslinux/sbm packages there is a chance
that the source for the exact versions used in the daily images may
not remain on the mirrors. To be totally safe, we'll need to track
versions of packages that go into the daily images (both packages and
the used binary files) and archive those too. "Yay".

Other files (hence the cc: to the m68k folks):

* cts_amiga_info.tar.gz
* macinstall-cd.tar.gz

are both provided to boot m68k machines, and they each contain binary
files (icons and boot files, AFAICS). I have no idea how those files
are generated, nor what the licensing situation is for them. Can you
help out please?

No quite, it provides some fault-tolerance. Anyway, you're missing the
point that this is targeted at a different audience. For example, I've
just deployed cosign at my job, to have SSO in internal webapps that
can't use something open to the world like openid.

it works as a authentication module in apache, replacing/complementing
basic auth and the such. It uses a session cookie, but you don't have
it, it redirects you to the main weblogin page when you're asked for
credentials or given a new service-specific cookie if you already had
authenticated there. I think the mechanism is well explained here:
http://weblogin.org/overview.html

It's no filter or portal. It's just a system to handle authentication
centrally passing tokens around in the form of cookies, I think it can
be paralleled to kerberos in that idea. You can compare it with
bitcard (used in rt.cpan.org) or other similar projects, like
Shibboleth, pubcookie, mod_auth_tkt and openSSO. It's difficult to
explain, I guess all those websites will do a better job :)

This requires no modification to applications that were already
relying on apache authentication.
In any case I think it's not me or you who decide how it should be
implemented :)

Yes, the documentation is crap. I'm trying to work on that, but
there's no clear license on the current web docs, so I cannot work
with them as a base ATM.

err... I don't understand you :) This is thought for places when you
can trust a central place to manage users (think ldap, kerberos, nis,
etc), and in any case, cosign doesn't keep the usernames and
passwords, it just relies on any authentication scheme you want to
use.

Well, that's exactly the point, you have 20 websites, each with its
own htaccess file, and you as a sysadmin hate that. You can configure
ldap/krb/etc and make apache authenticate against that on _each_
server, which will solve the single password issue, but the users
still have to enter user/pass each time, also you need to protect the
channel because the passwords are sent in the clear.

That's ok to me, if you want. Not sure if anything productive can be
taken out of the commo

Bug#496419: Patch

thanks

Hi,

attached is a patch for a tentative 0.8.2-3.1, that aims at handling
temporary files more securely by designating ~/.convirt/tmp as their
base path.

I do not use convirt myself, so if this patch raises additional issues
please let me know; it should at least provide the basis for a better
fix, if need be.

Cheers,

Bug#498542: darcs-server: Doesn't work with Perl 5.10's stricter taint checks

2008-09-10 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: darcs-server
Version: 2.0.2-2
Severity: important

The heart of this package is a Perl CGI script.

Perl's taint checking has become stricter between 5.8 and 5.10:
perl#45671: printf should check taintedness of its template
 http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=45671

In this CGI script, $name is tainted in:
 line 231: printf $fh qq( <$type name="$name" modified="$mtime" ts="$ts"
/>\n);
 line 250: printf $fh qq( \n);

With those two fixed, it's showing the list of repositories, but only giving
a blank page when I browse in to them. I'll log another bug if I work out
what else is wrong.

There are other printfs in it that look problematic, but I'm not hitting them
yet.

darcs-server appears to be completely broken with Perl 5.10. Setting this
bug non-RC as it shares the source package with the main darcs binary.

Steve

Two patches attached - one fixes the printfs that I have hit, one should fix
a couple of others which look problematic, but I haven't hit them yet.
Please remember that it's not working properly for me yet.

That's not really a verbose critique of the patch.

Thanks.

This bug, then, becomes a minor one: the error message doesn't explain
what's wrong to someone who installed the package and all its
'Depends' and 'Recommended' dependencies, but knows nothing about its
implementation.

If the error message said "External ikiwiki plugins require the
'librpc-xml-perl' package, is it installed?" or similar, this bug
would be fixed.

I don't recall when the relaxation of cr4 changes happened. Newer is
normally better ( ;-) ) but 3.2.0 is probably worth a go if you have an
aversion to 3.2.1.

it was probably side effect of an otherwise innocent looking change...

Bug#498395: gdm doesn't really depend on gksu

That's different than how I read that section. I read it as requiring a
depends if without that dependency, the package provides no significant
functionality; if I understand correctly, you read it as requiring a
depends if without the package loses any of its significant functions. I
believe my reading is more correct (especially considering Recommends),
but I suspect you believe the same of your reading.

It's your package, so its your decision; I don't object if you close the
bug again.

Well - two things. First, I confess I've gotten a little annoyed at
dependencies which make me install programs which I don't need: I
maintain some machines with small (by today's standards) amounts of disk
space. Granted, its not much space in this case.

Second, and more important in this case, is I'm trying to uninstall
gnome-keyring, which gksu depends on (though, I guess, I could have
filed this bug there, too). I'm trying to uninstall gnome-keyring
because otherwise gnome-session starts it up, and sets the SSH_AUTH_SOCK
environment variable to use it instead of ssh-agent (even though
SSH_AUTH_SOCK was already set). I could not find a way to make
gnome-session not do that, and don't use gnome-keyring anyway, so I just
tried to uninstall it.

I want to use ssh-agent instead of gnome-keyring-daemon because:
a) gnome-keyring-daemon doesn't support ssh-add -t
b) gnome-keyring auto-adds all the keys, in encrypted form, which I
 find annoying
c) If I remember correctly, gnome-keyring-daemon has the ability to
save keyrings to disk, which is worrying should I do it by
 mistake.

Right now, I just dpkg-diverted /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon out of the
way, and put a simple 'exit 1' shell script in its place. But that
obviously is not a good solution!

Sorry about that; I had assumed debbugs would forward that message along
to the maintainers.

Bug#497324: Only dependency on cython was needed

2008-09-10 Thread Vincent Bernat
Hi Thomas!

setup.py builds lxml.etree.c and lxml.objectify.c when cython is
present. Therefore, only the dependency with cython was necessary (plus
the cleaning rule). Moreover, cython is a replacement for pyrex so the
dependency on pyrex is not necessary.

I don't think this warrant another upload though.

Ha. Good catch. Apologies. I did what seemed logical to me and tested
that it works...

If you want to, please go ahead and fix it (after asking Matthias of
course). If you do be quick though to not delay the fix migrate to
testing any more than it has to be.

Incidentally I tried installing libseaudit4 and libpoldiff1 (should they

Hi,

The following is the diff for my xen-3 3.2.1-2.1 NMU.
It incorporates three patches from upstream and aims to
fix CVE-2008-2004 aka #490409.
It is not yet tested much, I would appreciate if interested
parties could give it a try.
I'll upload in due course.

Kind regards

+ioemu: fix disk format security vulnerability
+
+* make the xenstore reader in qemu-dm's startup determine which
+ of qemu's block drivers to use according to the xenstore
+ backend `type' field. This `type' field typically comes from
+ the front of the drive mapping string in ioemu. The
+ supported cases are:
+xm config file string `type' image formatqemu driver
+ phy:[/dev/]phy raw image bdrv_raw
+ file:fileraw image bdrv_raw
+ tap:aio: tap raw image bdrv_raw
+ tap:qcow: tap not raw autoprobe
+ tap:: tap named formatbdrv_
+ It is still necessary to autoprobe when the image is specified as
+ `tap:qcow:', because qemu distinguishes `qcow' and `qcow2'
+ whereas blktap doesn't; `qcow' in xenstore typically means what
+ qemu calls qcow2. This is OK because qemu can safely distinguish
+ the different cow formats provided we know it's not a raw image.
+
+* Make the format autoprobing machinery never return `raw'. This has
+ two purposes: firstly, it arranges that the `tap:qcow:...' case
+ above can be handled without accidentally falling back to raw
+ format. Secondly it prevents accidents in case the code changes in
+ future: autoprobing will now always fail on supposed cow files which
+ actually contain junk, rather than giving the guest access to the
+ underlying file.

| Maybe I should have been more explicit about what I had in mind. I
| wasn't suggesting having base R depend on r-cran-cairodevice. The two

I understand but ...

| ways of doing this that I can see are:
|
| 1. If there's a directory of .r files that are read at startup by R,
| like /etc/emacs/site-start.d for emacs, etc., then r-cran-cairodevice
| could add a file in there that would change the default output device
| from X11 to Cairo.
|
| Having the equivalent of /etc/emacs/site-start.d for the use of Debian R
| packages would require a change to the R core package, but it should be
| doable since R is a general programming language. And this is something
| that might be useful for other R Debian package after.

... I as maintainer have 'almost always' shied away from making 'our' Debian
R non-standard. There are little things (paperconf, say) I am willing to do;
what you suggest is a change in basic functionality that would surprise as
many users as it may please.

Please discuss upstream, this is not a Debian bug in my book. You want
different behaviour _upstream_.

| 2. Another option is to simply have the Debian startup code for R (in
| r-base-core, I guess) enable the Cairo output device if it sees that the
| cairoDevice library is installed, otherwise use X11.

Which is why I said 'local admin issue'. Experiment with your site.profile;
this is what it exists.

| Both ways, core R doesn't depend on r-cran-cairodevice, but users that
| install the package automatically get good-looking graphic output (like
| people have by default with R on Mac at least).
|
| Please reopen this bug report, at least to discuss a bit... that is
| unless you find both suggestions completely atrocious.

They are surely not atrocious, but they are suggestions of the user of one
among now almost 1500 packages at CRAN. We can't win if we single them out
this way. Too many potential special issues. Everybody will have a pet
peeve.

Also, did you actually realise that 'cairo' is now a capability of R itself?
Call 'capabilities()' or 'capabilities("cairo")' in R 2.7.2:

> capabilities("cairo")
cairo
TRUE
>

There were some speed issue with Cairo in R 2.7.0, IIRC.

To sum up, R strives to be consistent across platform and installations. I
will not be in favour of deviating from that path.

I am sorry of this strikes you as dogmatic. I am actually trying to be
constructive, albeit also in the spirit of R.

Cheers, Dirk

Done?

Yes I read this:

# New ports will be added on request if they have been officially assigned
# by IANA and used in the real-world or are needed by a debian package.
# If you need a huge list of used numbers please install the nmap package.

"Only added by request" sounds like everyone should report problems
individually as they may notice it. Having automated way to keep the
file updated would be more welcomed.

The IANA is the port assignment authority, so these would be expected to
be found from standard system.

I'm attaching script to automate keeping the posrt numbers updated
easily.

The latter was how I was going to implement it (I was going to write that
same function for another purpose).

Hi,

work on this package is complete, and I'm going to upload it on mentors
and request for sponsor.

During this time I worked together with upstream in order to improve the
application and also to make it better suitable for Debian packaging. In
particular:

- I advised him to clarify the copyright license of his choice, because
mz 0.32 source files included a GPLv3 header, while the tarball
 included a gpl-2.0.txt file;
- I helped him to improve cmake build system, so that all files are
 installed to the right path in a clean way;
- I advised him to include a README and ChangeLog file, add some notes
to INSTALL file and other minor changes here and there.

There is currenty no kipi-plugins for KDE4, so I can't do much with this bug
report :-)

> We really need this package.

The upstream focus is on getting digikam functional for KDE4 and then upstream
will focus on the plugins. That's why digikam 0.10 rc is sitting in the
experimental. It isn't supposed to be used in full production yet.

However by all means join the effort upstream at www.digikam.org and it will
happen sooner.

Bug#498535: fluxbox: programs get BadAlloc errors when shading or unshading

2008-09-10 Thread Ken Bloom
Package: fluxbox
Version: 1.1.0.1-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Since the last upgrade to Fluxbox, I have observed numerous programs
crash with X11 errors when I tried to shade their windows or unshade
them.

Here's a couple errors (in unrelated programs) that came when I tried
to shade them.

The program 'galeon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
 (Details: serial 364123 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
 (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I also observed a similar error in gvim earlier today, but I don't
recall whether I was trying to shade the window or unshade it. (gvim
reacted by getting into an infinite loop, printing the following
repeatedly)

gdmsetup is a significant amount of functionality which we directly
want to support; if gdmsetup doesn't work, the package has a RC bug.
This includes users who don't have gksu and try to launch gdmsetup.

Please explain what you are really trying to achieve instead of
negociating individual dependencies by throwing policy quotes at us.

(Also, I recommend you to Cc: @packages.debian.org or the bug as
getting your message from the bot's transcript isn't too nice for other
maintainers)

Hmm, that is indeed a bug. I would suggest not emitting the tag if
all binary packages have the Package-Type set to udeb.

Bug#498520: Rprofile.site configuration file not under /etc

2008-09-10 Thread Christian Hudon

Dirk Eddelbuettel wrote:

Well, first off, congrats for finding it :) Second, you didn't have too,
this is all documented in help(Startup) [ though I agree that finding
help is not always easy; OTOH doing help.search("Rprofile") would have
lead you there, along with some false positives ]

Thanks for the pointers! I already know about help() and help.search().
But the problem is, how is one supposed to know that 'Startup' is the
right help topic to request... And for help.search(Rprofile), in that
particular instance I was *searching* for the name of the file I needed
to edit for local customizations, so that wouldn't have worked very well
either. :-) (Yeah, I guess Startup is mentioned somewhere near the root
of the documentation. But in practice, when I'm looking for an answer to
a very specific question, I usually don't say to myself "Well, let's
start to read the documentation from the beginning.") Just to help to
put you in the mindset of someone who knows less about R than you do. ;-)

(And in practice, for that particular question, I find personally that
strace yields the answer in a way that's pleasingly consistently fast.
;-) But anyways, that's not the topic of this bug report...)

Third and most importantly, ?Startup says

Unless '--no-environ' was given on the command line, R searches
for site and user files to process for setting environment
variables. The name of the site file is the one pointed to by the
environment variable 'R_ENVIRON'; if this is unset or empty,
'R_HOME/etc/Renviron.site' is used (if it exists, which it does
not in a 'factory-fresh' installation). The user files searched
for are '.Renviron' in the current or in the user's home directory
(in that order). See 'Details' for how the files are read.

Then R searches for the site-wide startup profile unless the
command line option '--no-site-file' was given. The name of this
file is taken from the value of the 'R_PROFILE' environment
variable. If this variable is unset, the default is
'R_HOME/etc/Rprofile.site', which is used if it exists (which it
does not in a 'factory-fresh' installation). This code is sourced
into the 'base' package. Users need to be careful not to
unintentionally overwrite objects in 'base', and it is normally
advisable to use 'local' if code needs to be executed: see the
examples.

In both cases, Rprofile.site and Renviron.site are supposed to be empty!
That usually held me back from installing these.

Do you feel very strongly about having empty stubs? I'd prefer to just
leave things as they are; it's just one less thing that can break one day.

Well... ok, in order of decreasing "feeling very strongly about":

1. One thing I feel extremely strongly about is that as a sysadmin,
programs should never, ever require me to go edit something under /usr.
I reinstall the same list of packages on a new machine (or on the same
machine becaused of a hd that crashed), I should have the same,
identical /usr. If I edit a file under /usr, I'll end up forgetting that
I did, etc. Also, I really, really like being able to backup a small
/etc to get all the configuration of all the programs installed (< 50
MB), instead of having to backup a potentially much bigger (gigabytes)
/usr to catch the programs that put configuration files that might have
been edited at some point. In my mind (and I really doubt I'm the only
person thinking that way), for backups, disaster recovery, etc., /usr
(excluding /usr/local, of course) is completely handled by reinstalling
the set of .deb that were on the machine.

Consequently, I feel strongly (in a corresponding amount) in this case
about having the r-core-base package provide symlinks from
/usr/lib/R/etc to /etc/R for every file and directory that I might want
to create or edit to configure R. (Hey, you're the one who mentioned
"strong feelings" :-) ). As a sysadmin, I edit stuff under /etc... I can
install stuff under /usr/local, I can change stuff in /var from time to
time, but I never touch /usr, and never want to.

2. Once the symlinks are in /usr/lib/R/etc, I feel less strongly about
what files are in /etc/R. I'd still like you to consider installing
corresponding files in /etc/R, though, because from a
sysadmin-friendliness and discoverability point of view, I think it's
much better. You probably know R like the back of your hand, but let's
assume you know dhcp less well than R. Isn't it really nice to just
quickly browse around in /etc once you're installed dhcp and see at
least file with comments saying "here is the configuration file", so you
don't have to research that. (Not a great example, because the dhcp
config files will have a very specific format, while the R config files
will tend to be more R code, with no specific format). But I know that
in general, I find programs that put something under /etc much nicer and

Bug#414601: fakeroot: sometimes treats copied files as directories

2008-09-10 Thread Michael Itz
We've run into something similar, and I think I can explain what's going
on. In our particular case, we're using pbuilder to build packages in a
chroot and we're seeing that fakeroot will very rarely start reporting
that a directory is a regular file. Once it starts it will often do so
for several runs, and then it will go back to working.

The culprit seems to be the statically linked ldconfig in the pbuilder
chroot which runs shortly before a mkdir. Since fakeroot can't wrap its
calls, ldconfig is able to call unlink without fakeroot updating its
database. Then the inodes of the unlinked files can be reused for new
files for which fakeroot will report out of date information.

In the most common failure we've seen, the inode that holds
/etc/ld.so.cache is noted by fakeroot when it's untarred and chowned,
then it's unlinked by ldconfig and the the same inode is given to a
subsequent mkdir in /etc, which then stats as a file when it's really a
directory. It's probably also possible for ldconfig to remove a symlink
and then have that inode reused for a regular file or directory later
on, but I haven't seen that happen.

Because it requires an inode be reused, it's difficult to reproduce
this. It may be more likely to happen on almost empty or almost full
filesystems. I've had luck reproducing it somewhat consistently in very
small loop mounts using the approach/hack pasted below.

I'm posting this under issue 414601 as it's closest to what we've seen,
but I believe 366067 and 425007 could have the same or similar
underlying cause and might warrant merging.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure it's worth to implement
Lintian::Data::WithValues as a subclass instead of just triggering the
behaviour on the presence of a separator option to the new call.

And yeah, I would go with severity normal.

Apart from that the patches look fine.

Bug#498534: metapixel fails when using --search=global

2008-09-10 Thread Christian Brabandt

Package: metapixel
Version: 1.0.2-5
Severity: normal
User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.13 (2006-08-11)

Hi,
I have been trying out metapixel lately. This program is really
aweseome and generates really good results.

However, while trying different options, I noticed, that metapixel
will fail on this system when using --search=global.

The output is:

metapixel --library /mnt/temp/mosaik2 --search=global --metapixel
/mnt/Bilder/moewe.jpg /mnt/temp/moewe_global.jpg
metapixel: metapixel.c:1087: generate_global_classic: Assertion `matches != 0'
failed.

I've been using metapixel on this system in a virtual machine image,
so maybe memory is an issue. However, a better error message would be
very nice (but this might be an upstream issue).
