Bug#522878: file aborts with file: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x082b4a80

2009-04-06 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Package: file
Version: 5.00-1
Severity: normal

amavisd-new uses "file" to determine the type of a file.
Today, my amavisd-new partition filled up, since amavisd-new encountered an
error with a particular mail.

I examined the mail, extracted the attachment and reproduced the problem:

A quick update on that:

quite recently some new contributor provided patches for using sqlite instead.
Unforuntately the situation with respect to sqlite hasn't changed yet, e.g.
it still deadlocks.

However it shows that the code can support different database engines, so
assuming some body contributes the code for postgresql or something else
those might become options in the future.

Not entirely correct, i.e. Korganizer of 4.2 does not, Korganizer of 4.3 will.
KPilot already requires Akonadi though.

Anyway, this is just nitpicking. The Akonadi server is a runtime requirement
of the Akonadi KDE libraries, which are part of the KDE platform.

> Very soon, kmail will also require akonadi-server.

True, we hope this to happen with 4.4, there are still huge porting efforst
ahead.

> Akonadi is here to stay.

Indeed. It is a pity we didn't have the resources to do more app porting
already, but it seems we are on a good track for 4.3

Kevin

Okay, I have no objections if it's just the source package with that name.

Not off the top of my head, but if this is meant to be a source package to
collect it all and avoid duplication, I'm all for that!

The messages are marked as read in both folders, but the special search
folder name is in bold and shows unread message count (like (1)).

Yes, quitting evolution "solves" the issue.

Bug#522875: libnanohttp1: inet_ntoa is not thread safe

2009-04-06 Thread Russell Coker
Package: libnanohttp1
Version: 1.1.0-13
Severity: important

The library call inet_ntoa() is not thread safe. With glibc in Lenny if you
call it from multiple threads then you can get a SEGV. Even if it didn't get
a SEGV then it would still result in race conditions and incorrect data.

The following patch removes both instances of inet_ntoa(). The first one was
simply a mistake (doing things the hard way), the second can be done in a
thread-safe manner.

Note that I have not exercised the code path for the inet_ntop() use.

I am in the middle of a significant stress-test of the first patch, it's had
40 threads running for the last 20 minutes without finding a problem yet.

I really think using mysql is much better than reimplementing a fast storage

Actually, I don't, because totem doesn't do what it says it will.
(--gst-disable-segtrap doesn't do anything)

It also happens that the pidgin crash is fixed, but the gstreamer one is
not.

Before the update from which version to which version? Could you run an
evolution --force-shutdown, then re-run it and try if it fixes the
problem? (at least the “folder does not exist” one).

I honestly don't have a clue about the “On this computer” issue.

Sorry, that’s /usr/lib/$(pyversions -d)/… of course.

Furthermore, you need to do that before the call to dh_pysupport. You
also want to test this change extensively, since the code to handle
renaming of relative symlinks correctly was not added long ago.

Bug#522872: give reasons for file error messages

2009-04-06 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: kaboom
Version: 1.1.0
Severity: normal

I just did an upgrade with kaboom, which appeared to have worked well. But I
saw a few error messages of the sort

Could not remove "x"

Be that as it may, it would have been very helpful if it gave the reason for
these errors. On a code level, I think RecursiveDirJob::Error::message()
should print errno (or whatever the equivalent in C++) which each message.

Another random thought for further debuggability: Write a kaboom.log to the
home directory with the error messages, if any.

I tried this at home, and somewhat surprisingly dpkg wouldn't
remove the old perl-base -> perl symlink when upgrading perl-base.

I suppose this policy note (section 6.6.4) covers it:

A directory will never be replaced by a symbolic link to a directory
or vice versa; instead, the existing state (symlink or not) will be
left alone and dpkg will follow the symlink if there is one.

I think we need to remove the symlink manually in perl-base.preinst
on upgrades.

Bug#522871: libqtcore4: qt seems to incorrectly use ~/.fonts.conf

2009-04-06 Thread Miles Bader
Package: libqtcore4
Version: 4.5.0-2
Severity: normal

I have a ~/.fonts.conf file, in which I turn off anti-aliasing for a
specific set of fonts (and for those fonts, only within a specific size
range).

In most fontconfig/freetype apps (e.g. iceweasel/firefox, gtk+ aps,
etc), this works as intended -- the selected fonts are not anti-aliased,
but all other fonts are anti-aliased.

However, in qt apps (e.g., "qtconfig"), _all_ fonts lack anti-aliasing,
and look quite awful as a result.

If I remove my ~/.fonts.conf file, fonts are properly anti-aliased in qt
apps as well, so it clearly seem to be some problem with that.

Thanks,

-Miles

I wouldn't expect so. I've never seen such a problem with other
cmake-based builds, e.g. ITK.

I think the reporter of 521451 is right, though: -dev package should
be arch any. And it usually has static libs -- where'd they go?

Bug#522868: munin-node: bind9_rndc Plugin broken with current Bind in Lenny

2009-04-06 Thread Thorsten Tüllmann
Package: munin-node
Version: 1.2.6-9
Severity: important

The munin-node bind9_rndc plugin does not work with Bind 9.5. It is
broken upstream and rendered useless on Lenny without applying the patch
from http://munin.projects.linpro.no/ticket/627.

Bug#520352: malo chroot /etc/group needs fixing

2009-04-06 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Hi folks--

It looks like the main thing holding up coreutils 7.1 from propagating
into squeeze is a bad /etc/group file in the chroot on malo.

I tried building coreutils on my own powerpc system and it built
properly and passed all tests that were run. (in particular, it passed
chown/separator.log). I can supply build logs if anyone wants them.

Could someone tweak malo's chroot's /etc/group to contain a non-empty
name for gid 1009?

Thanks,

how about:

The installation of files into subdirectories of
  /usr/X11R6/is now prohibited. Include files
should be installed into /usr/include/X11/. For
files that previously would be installed into subdirectories
  of /usr/X11R6/lib/, package maintainers should
determine if subdirectories of /usr/lib/ and
/usr/share/ can be used. If not, a subdirectory
  of /usr/lib/X11/ should be used.

?

(i.e. not making this specific to the include/X11 and lib/X11
subdirectories, since nothing should use /usr/X11R6 anymore)

Cheers,
Julien

Well, it works for me even for the manual :-)

I've reviewed the patch and below a diff with some suggested changes.
Please check them and let me know if you're OK with them. A few are to
avoid unnecessary branding. A few are because the architecture list for
the manual is slightly different from the "normal" architecture list.
Some are for general consistency.

After you are OK I'll merge these changes, do some needed whitespace
cleanups and commit the patch.

Cheers,
FJP

I was about to apply this, but then realized that it leaves the following,
which seems a bit odd and self-contradictory:

The installation of files into subdirectories
of /usr/X11R6/include/X11/ and
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ is now prohibited;
package maintainers should determine if subdirectories of
/usr/lib/ and /usr/share/ can be used
instead.

Packages should install any relevant files into the
directories /usr/include/X11/ and
/usr/lib/X11/.

I think what we want to say is:

The installation of files into subdirectories of
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/ and
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ is now prohibited. Include
files should be installed into /usr/include/X11/.
For files that previously would be installed into
subdirectories of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/, package
maintainers should determine if subdirectories of
/usr/lib/ and /usr/share/ can be
used. If not, a subdirectory of /usr/lib/X11/
should be used.

Does that sound right?

Bug#437213: new versions of klogd sleeps for too much time

2009-04-06 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Package: klogd
Version: 1.5-5
Severity: normal

Hello. I've investigated this problem a little further since I've hit
it. I run an etch vserver host with etch and lenny (some not fully
upgraded and one that I've just upgraded from etch to lenny today). With
etch klogd, it does not start, but it is very fast. lenny version,
however, seemed to never finish. I tried stracing it, but ended up
diffing the code and noticed a very peculiar change:

Then, learn patience, friend, cause in five minutes, your server is
gonna boot (or your upgrade is gonna finish properly, with all packages
duely configured). :-D

Well, I think this is too much time and I don't even know sleeping gets
any advantage at all. If there's any reason to that, I would like to
know. The parent ain't waiting for its children no more, so that's no
reason, it seems.

Hope this helps,
Cascardo.

I was looking for ways to help the ‘python-support’ transition, and
saw a bug which looked like it had not been addressed and no
communication from the maintainer as to what the status was.

So, on discovering that the maintainer has a fix pending upload, I
tagged the bug report to indicate that fact to anyone *else* who may
be looking to help with the bug.

Bug#522865: mozilla-plugin-gnash: "aptitude search flash" doesn't find this package

2009-04-06 Thread Rodney Polkinghorne
Package: mozilla-plugin-gnash
Severity: normal

Steps to reproduce:

$ aptitude search flash

Expected output:

p mozilla-plugin-gnash - free SWF movie player - Plugin for Mozilla and
derivatives

Actual output:

p flashplugin-nonfree- Adobe Flash Player -
browser plugin
p flashrom - Universal BIOS/ROM/flash
programming utility
p flashybrid - automates use of a flash
disk as the root filesystem
p libroxen-flash2- Flash2 module for the
Roxen Challenger web server
p m16c-flash - Flash programmer for
Renesas M16C and R8C microcontrollers
p vrflash- tool to flash kernels and
romdisks to Agenda VR

Suggested solution:

Replace the acronym "SWF" with the phrase "Shockwave Flash" in the first line
of the package description.

Hi,

Where exactly do you mean. It seems to work after losing the ball but
not when attempting to select one of the menu items. Is that what you mean?

Bug#522864: installation-reports

2009-04-06 Thread Viper550

Package: installation-reports

Image version: 5.00 NetInst
Date: April 6, 2009

Machine: VirtualBox VM running on Compaq Presario SR2038X on Windows Vista
Processor: AMD Athlon64 X2

Install tasks: [O]

Comments/Problems:
I have several nitpicks with the installer, though most of them involve the GUI
installer.

Firstly, the GUI installer, looks and acts a bit too much like just the old
ncurses style mode, maybe following the Gnome HIG could make the options flow a
bit better.

Secondly, on package selection, there should be more groups avaliable. What if
I want a different desktop than Gnome? There should be other package group
options in the installer.

Other than that, nice work!

Bug#182747: updated package should remove directory and use symlink instead

2009-04-06 Thread Jayen Ashar
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.13.26
Followup-For: Bug #182747

I've created a package for a proprietary software that bundles with java.
We've decided since then to replace the bundled java with a symlink to the
system java, but when our systems update the package, they are left with an
empty directory. I have attached some small test packages that exhibit this
problem if you do an update, but not if you do a removal and install.

To be clear on what the recommended fix is, are you saying that the
above lines should be changed to say:

=
dh_link /usr/share/javascript/mochikit/MochiKit.js \
/usr/share/$(pyversions
-d)/site-packages/python-paste/paste/evalexception/mochikit/MochiKit.js
=

Or some other change instead? Is anything else required?

I can't help thinking that may have disastrous consequences for
packages that have nothing to do with GNOME, particularly if gnome.mk
decides to do something "more gnomey" in future -- currently it
appears to merely invoke dh_gconf, dh_desktop and dh_icons.

Bug#508933: Patch for joystick support for gravitywars

2009-04-06 Thread Steve Cotton
It's not obvious how to calibrate the joystick and the defaults
work badly with my joypad (only recognises down and right by
default).

ah, the -j command line option allows calibration
of the joystick, and then it works
 ./GravityWars101.c:
printf ("Can not load joystick configuration file. Using defaults.\n");
It does print that when run without joystick
settings, but a hint about how to set it (and a clue for
people starting it from a WM menu) would be good.
Hmm, where to put the -j option. In the manpage?

The command-line parsing in GravityWars101.c would be cleaner if
the game always recognised the -j option; and then quit with an
error if it had been compiled without joystick support.

In addition, all mail filters are now broken and I get an error: Error

Actually, I didn't really check carefully about the order. The order
may not matter. I didn't have gnome.mk included at all, so I figured
the problem was just my omission. However, I see code in gnome.mk
that is conditional inside of

ifdef _cdbs_rules_debhelper
...
endif

which is most likely order-dependent since the ifdef will be evaluated
at the time that the file is loaded rather than at the time that the
rules are evaluated as with ordinary macros.

Anyway, if you'd still like me to patch, I can still look into it. I
wasn't trying to punt it...just thinking that the error was actually
in my rules rather than in cdbs. :-) However, I won't have another
chance to look at it until at least the weekend.

Bug#522861: gravitywars: start-on-level passwords are reverse-case-sensitive

2009-04-06 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: gravitywars
Version: 1.102-31
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The man page lists a command-line option:

  level-code
You’ll receive this code after you complete a level, and can use it to
warp directly to that level when the game starts.

Complete the first level, and at the start of the second level there's a
password in the status bar at the top of the screen. Put it on the command
line and it's supported to start on the second level

BUG: it's a bad variation of case-sensitive. In the game, it's displayed in
upper-case, but it will only be accepted on the command-line in lower-case.

While I think it would be better to replace this entirely with in-game
options (such as saving the players progress, and in-game choice of starting
level from those already reached), the attached patch will at least make
upper-case work.

(Patch applies on top of the joystick patch; I'm about to suggest that that
code should be cleaned up.)

Wow, what service!

So often I hear from management types that they'd never use Debian or
any other distro they don't pay for because they can't get good
support. You're a shining example of how they're wrong and we're
right. =) How many companies would turn around a bug fix and a
feature request in a general purpose product in a matter of hours?

Thanks again!

Oh, please take no offense, as none was intended. I'm not even sure
what bug reports I might have submitted on the issue in the past, and
if I did, it probably didn't have enough detail. It's just one of
those bugs that only pops up right in the middle of something and I

Bug#522858: tar: causes dpkg-source extract failures

2009-04-06 Thread Daniel Schepler
Package: tar
Version: 1.22-1
Severity: important

Since installing the latest version of tar, I'm getting failures in
attempting to extract certain deb packages. For example, with
telepathy-glib:

frobozz:/tmp$ dpkg-source -x telepathy-glib_0.7.29-1.dsc
dpkg-source: extracting telepathy-glib in telepathy-glib-0.7.29
dpkg-source: info: unpacking telepathy-glib_0.7.29.orig.tar.gz
dpkg-source: failure: gunzip died from signal 13
frobozz:/tmp$ ls telepathy-glib-0.7.29.orig/
frobozz:/tmp$

When I try the same thing with the previous version of tar installed,
the package unpacks just fine.

(Never mind the local "+pb1" versions below, I've also reproduced the
same problem in a vanilla pbuilder chroot.)

Depend on the delay. We have some boring bug on magemagick and an

If it is more than two weeks perhaps it will be interesting to find the bug.

I would have appreciated being told that within a few days of

I provided all the information I had in the initial bug report. I

no one asked.

I don't have the slightest idea how to report a bug to the kernel
upstream. Isn't forwarding bugs to upstream part of a Debian
maintainer's responsibilities?

please never file cross compiler issues as RC reports. we add all patches which
keep the cross builds working, but failures in cross build should not hinder the
normal debian packages.

please do consider to build the cross packages from an explicit separate source
(build-depending on the various toolchain -source packages). The -source
packages do contain the packaging and patch files as well, so you still can use
the debian patches that debian applies to the toolchain.

Bug#522852: guile-1.8: FTBFS: guile.c:72: undefined reference to `lt__PROGRAM__LTX_preloaded_symbols'

Hi,

Your package is failing to build with the following error:
x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc -O2 -g -Wall -Wmissing-prototypes -Werror .libs/guileS.o
-o .libs/guile guile-guile.o -Wl,--export-dynamic ./.libs/libguile.so

/build/buildd/guile-1.8-1.8.5+1/libguile/guile.c:72: undefined reference to
`lt__PROGRAM__LTX_preloaded_symbols'

This is probably a missing call to LTDL_SET_PRELOADED_SYMBOLS

This bug is holding up the libltdl transition. It would be nice
if you could fix this soon. If you need help, please ask.

My dear sir, I'm not sure whether I've ever had a bug report from you, but I
certainly *do* care, and have made several attempts over the years to fix
paragraph filling. I'm sorry it's still causing grief...

Thanks very much for your detailed bug report, which enabled me to reproduce
the bug. I've committed a fix to git, and will release 2.3.5 shortly. I
can't promise this is the last bug in line wrapping; this one was specific
to lines containing multiple spaces, as the call to delete-horizontal-space
that line wrapping makes was not taken into account in subsequent
positioning of point. Fortunately (to use a marker rather than making
incorrect calculations) simplifies the code, so at least there's less to
debug next time!

Bug#522850: debian-goodies: checkrestart fails when UML is running

2009-04-06 Thread Jiří Paleček

Package: debian-goodies
Version: 0.50
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

when running checkrestart, I got an AttributeError stating that there
wasn't an attribute program. It seems to be related to UML processes which
lack a proper link /proc/$PID/exe; reading this link produces EINVAL.

The attached patch fixed the error.

Now I'm running on my server. Lets see how it does for awhile.

Still need to arrange a sponsor for Debian. :-)

Bug#522848: hplip: scanning only working as root

2009-04-06 Thread Anders Boström
Package: hplip
Version: 3.9.2-3
Severity: important

hp-toolbox and scanning isn't working. Scanning works as root, but
when run as a normal user, I get this:

eckert:/home/anders>scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
eckert:/home/anders>

If I add the following rule to /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_libsane.rules , I
can scan as a normal user (member in the scanner group):

# Hewlett-Packard PSC750
SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1411", MODE="0664",
GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

hp-toolbox run as normal user also works after adding that rule.

Running hp-toolbox as root result in this:

eckert:~# hp-toolbox
warning: hp-toolbox should not be run as root/superuser.

Bug#522847: aap: fails to build with Python 2.6

2009-04-06 Thread Colin Watson
Package: aap
Version: 1.072-1.1
Severity: important
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu ubuntu-patch jaunty

[This was originally filed as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aap/+bug/356442.]

'as' is a keyword in Python 2.6, and so aap fails to build. Here's an
example build log from a test rebuild we did in Ubuntu:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24879118/buildlog_ubuntu-jaunty-i386.aap_1.072-1.1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

Judging from the nearby 'ae', it appears that 'as' is being used as an
abbreviation for 'argument start', paired with 'argument end'. Thus, I
suggest using 'ab' instead for 'argument begin'. I've attached a patch.

Thanks,

Please commit the file attached to this message.

Speaking of the notification robot - it also sends notifications about
changed "Unknown words". I don't exactly know what it is but I'm
pretty sure this information is useless for me. Can the notification
of "Unknown words" be diabled if there's no other change in .po files
in the same message?

Thank you.

Bug#522849: Bash xrealloc randomly fails

2009-04-06 Thread James Y Knight

Package: bash
Version: 3.2-4

I'm on an x86_64 machine.

I believe this bug is due to Bash's builtin malloc implementation only
supporting sbrk() and not mmap() to get memory.

I'd like to suggest that the correct resolution of this bug is to
disable bash's builtin malloc and simply use glibc's. I'm not sure
whether or not this should be considered a kernel bug as well.

More details:

bash fails with a message like:
xrealloc: ../bash/general.c:888: cannot reallocate 262144 bytes (0
bytes allocated)
(not always that exact line in the source, but that particular failure
line is pretty common, I expect because it's allocating a lot of
memory).

This started happening after an upgrade from kernel 2.6.22 to kernel
2.6.26 (non-debian kernels). I've tracked it down to this new feature:

<<<
1.9. BRK and PIE executable randomization

Exec-shield is a Red Hat that was started in 2003 by Red Hat to
implement several security protections and is mainly used in Red Hat and
Fedora. Many features have already been merged lot of time ago, but not
all of them. In 2.6.25 two of them are being merged: brk() randomization
and PIE executable randomization. Those two features should make the
address space randomization on i386 and x86_64 complete.

http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_2_6_25#head-fc71477174376b69ac7c3cd153ed513d25bf2cae
<<<

The randomized brk placement is disableable via "echo 1 > /proc/sys/
kernel/randomize_va_space". When that value is set to 1, the failures
stop happening. When it's set to 2 (default value for my kernel), bash
randomly fails with the above error.

It seems that what is happening is that the randomized heap placement
is sometimes causing there to be shared libraries mapped close enough
after the heap such that there's not enough room for expansion. And
since bash's malloc can only use sbrk memory, it simply fails at that
point.

I'll also note that the placement of libraries in low memory around
the heap only happens if you've set a stack size ulimit, e.g. "ulimit -
S -s 10240".

Then, respectfully, upstream do need to have their heads examined.

Using the mysql client libraries would be understandable, but
this is just completely objectionable.

I don't want a trace of mysql near my system, but I would like to
use kde4. Optional mysql database bindings for the server would
be preferable so I don't even need the mysql client libraries
installed. Really.

> No value in keeping this bug open.

You might want to reconsider not pulling in the mysql server package
into the default kde install by not including akonadi-server
in the metapackage dependencies. The current requirement to run
mysql is horrible in the extreme.

kde[4] -> kdepim -> korganizer -> akonadi-server -> mysql-server

Ouch! Totally not acceptable.

Thanks,
Roger

Hi!
