Bug#627642: apt installed bad Packages files and is unable to replace them on update

2011-05-22 Thread Raphael Hertzog
I wanted to add that apparently only the squeeze files got updated/broken:
$ grep -l "^<" /var/lib/apt/lists/*
/var/lib/apt/lists/nas_debian_dists_squeeze_contrib_binary-i386_Packages
/var/lib/apt/lists/nas_debian_dists_squeeze_contrib_i18n_Index

/var/lib/apt/lists/nas_debian_dists_squeeze_non-free_i18n_Translation-fr
/var/lib/apt/lists/nas_debian_dists_squeeze_Release

Yet I have more in my sources.list:

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://nas/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://nas/debian experimental main contrib non-free
deb-src http://nas/debian unstable main contrib non-free

deb http://nas/debian wheezy main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://nas/debian wheezy main contrib non-free

deb http://nas/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
deb http://nas/debian proposed-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://nas/debian stable-updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://nas:/security squeeze/updates main

I also have unattended-upgrades 0.70 installed but it's not activated.
So I don't think it's the culprit.

Bug#627534: dh manpage: wrong/misleading example about build-{arch, indep}

Currently, yes. But since dpkg-buildpackage calls debian/rules build,
we're not avoiding anything at all. It just means that dh will also have
to be updated to benefit from the separation at some point...

And given everything ought to be makefile-based, calling the build a
second time should be a no-op right now.

So I don't see what's so wrong. Clearly it has no benefit right now, but
it's also not wrong in the general case.

I was a week on vacation where I had wifi access but by default

It looks like the automatic update of Packages list done via

Bug#627640: slapos.tool.format: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review

2011-05-22 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: slapos.tool.format
Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Sunday, May 08, 2011, I notified you of the beginning of a review process
concerning debconf templates for slapos.tool.format.

The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates,
and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report.

Please review the suggested changes, and if you have any
objections, let me know in the next 3 days.

However, please try to avoid uploading slapos.tool.format with these changes
right now.

The second phase of this process will begin on Thursday, May 26, 2011, when I
will
coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates.

The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will
receive an updated PO file for their language.

Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to
the debian-i18n mailing list.

Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as
individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug
reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with.

The call for translation updates and new translations will run until
about Thursday, June 16, 2011. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or
changed
debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my
own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact
that I simultaneously work on many packages.

Around Friday, June 17, 2011, I will contact you again and will send a final
patch
summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates,
updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

Yes, that makes sense. Even imagining Linux adopting the enum trick

More tests today (in combination with "test FILE1 -nt FILE2")
showed that a file is not newer if it's less than 1 second newer.
If it's exactly 1 second newer, the "test -nt" returns true. So
cutting the milliseconds off is ok (at least for this test tool).

Example:
if [ -f ${source} -a ${source} -nt ${destination} ]; then ...

More tests (using the big file):
-rw-r--r-- 1 joerg joerg 1619558400 2011-04-13 18:01:29.0 +0200
/home/joerg/gps/Legend_MapData/geoclub/gmapsupp.img

Copy it to the same ext4 partition --> same timestamp
Copy it to an ext2 partition (USB) --> same timestamp
Copy it to a vfat partition (USB) --> same timestamp
Copy it to a vfat partition (USB) on Garmin GPS --> different timestamp

I guess the cause is located deeper in the system:
In case of time-diff the used USB mode was ohci_hcd.
The other USB connections (with correct timestamp) used ehci_hcd.

This Garmin GPS is the only "legacy" system I own which uses ohci_hcd.

Cheers
  Joerg

For example the types are not exactly the same in the linux kernel and
the GNU libc, causing a lot of issues. This might be something we want
to do in the future, but judging by the number of bug reports we get
though the GNU libc doesn't include kernel headers directly, there is a
huge work to do first.

Also when there is a conflict between the two headers, the kernel side
and the GNU libc side have to decide which side should do the change.
It usually doesn't work.

Dear Gordon,

thanks, it built successfully on Ubuntu Natty.

Unfortunately aufs does not work with Linux 2.6.39 yet.

My bad. I saw it in Ubuntu Oneiric developing kernel 2.6.39. Now I
realized it's a reverting:

Bug#627619: libc6-dev: please define RLIMIT_RTTIME and increment RLIM_NLIMITS

Thanks for explaining. It seems somewhat backward --- Linus is a
cooperative and reasonable person and has been careful in the past
about guarding definitions that should not be public with "#ifdef
__KERNEL__", and when there are mistakes it is possible for distros to
patch them away in linux-libc-dev packaging.

But:

Yes, you are right about this. (Frankly I'm terrified of glibc
upstream and try to get all ducks in the row before talking to them.)

We don't want to include kernel headers directly, as they we don't
control their change, and they might create conflicts (especially with
type definition).

In any case, this kind of change has to be discussed with upstream. I
already send a patch upstream yesterday [1], and committed it to the
SVN. Unfortunately due to the current changes on the alioth side, the
changes hasn't been changed to the mailing list and the bug hasn't be
tagged pending automatically. Sorry for the duplicated work.

Please test whether this problem is also present in Linux 2.6.39, as
packaged in unstable. Note that you will need to upgrade
initramfs-tools at the same time, but this remains backward-compatible.

I don't know if you're aware, but monitors and other video displays
provide various information (EDID) in an I2C EEPROM, with the I2C bus
running over the display connector. The eeprom driver is probing this
I2C bus (which seems to be intentional). I don't recommend that you
load this driver.

I don't see any changes to the eeprom module in 2.6.39, but there have
been some changes to the I2C implementation in the i915 driver. So
please report this upstream at , under
product 'DRI', component 'DRM/Intel'. Let us know the bug number or URL
so we can track it.

Seeing the xpaint page I see something important in the changelog:

2011-02-25 J.-P. Demailly

* Version 2.9.8.2 - nothing really new, just very small fixes

* Very small changes in Xaw3dxft (minor Xaw3dXft.h API update)

I think that the changes needed are done.

See you,

Bug#627638: libgnustep-base-dev: indirectly depends on both libobjc2 and libobjc3; causes packages to miscompile

2011-05-22 Thread Ludovic Brenta
Package: libgnustep-base-dev
Version: 1.20.2-2
Severity: normal

Here is a partial dependency tree of libgnustep-base-dev:

libgnustep-base-dev (=1.20.2) depends on:
+ gobjc (>= 4:4.2) satisfied by gobjc (=4:4.6.0-5) which depends on:
 | + gobjc-4.6 (>= 4.6.0-1) satisfied by gobjc-4.6 (= 4.6.0-7) which depends on:
 |   + libobjc3 (>= 4.6.0-7) satisfied by libobjc3 (= 4.6.0-7)
 + libgnustep-base1.20 (=1.20.2-2) which depends on:
   + libobjc2 (>= 4.4.0) satisfied by libobjc2 (=4.5.3-1)

As a consequence, a package that build-depends on libgnustep-base-dev
will miscompile due to compiling with gobjc-4.6 and linking against
libobjc3 when libobjc2 was intended.

To fix this problem, I think the dependency of libgnustep-base-dev on
gobjc should be changed to gobjc-4.4 or gobjc-4.5.

That means dbus is not running.
Please check the status:
systemctl status dbus.socket
systemctl status dbus.service

Most likely this is a duplicate of #622881.

Please check the dmesg output, if systemd encountered a cycle and attach the
output.

Bug#616290: Patches solving FTBFS of isc-dhcp for GNU/Hurd

2011-05-22 Thread Samuel Thibault
Hello,

I've noticed a -17 version was uploaded, but unfortunately without
hurd patches. For the record, here they are again, refreshed:

- fix_ftbfs4hurd.dpatch which is actually what is upstream changes to
fix build on hurd, to be added before ldap backend fixes in 00list.
- patch which adds the above patch in 00list, and adds the
  inetutils-tools dependency on hurd-any to get inetutils-ifconfig.
- dhclient-script.hurd and dhclient-script.hurd.udeb, which I have
refreshed against the latest Linux version, to be added in debian/

Could you please apply them?

Then blame the usbmount package.
Looks like it left an orphaned file in /etc/udev/rules.d/, because it
moved it to /lib/udev/rules.d/ without actually deleting the conffile.
Anyway, udev is working as intended.

So at least you can know that it is not udevd.

Did you mean DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip? Also to ease debugging you

Bug#620960: Packaging of inspircd

2011-05-22 Thread Stig Sandbeck Mathisen

Hello,

I've made an unofficial package of inspircd 2.0.4, I've made this
available at https://gitorious.org/ssm-deb/inspircd

The packaging was based on the 1.1.22+dfsg-4 version, but most is now
probably rewritten. I'm not sure if there are any non-dfsg things left
in the upstream source. I did a quick sweep, but could not find any.

Notable changes:

Build:

 * debian/rules uses new dh with overrides
 * Allows parallel builds
 * Allows builds with git-buildpackage

Run:

 * Starts by default, disable in /etc/default/inspircd
 * Default configuration updated from 2.0 examples
 * logging to to /var/log/inspircd/
 * LSB compliant init script

Please feel free to pull any changes you like to the inspircd packaging
repo.

cut-n-pastable test build instructions:

$ sudo apt-get install git-buildpackage
$ cd /tmp
$ gbp-clone git://gitorious.org/ssm-deb/inspircd.git
$ cd inspircd
$ sudo apt-get build-dep inspircd
$ git-buildpackage

Please don't break other operating systems on my computer in such a
way that is irreversible, short of wiping the whole hard disk,
WITHOUT EVEN WARNING ME FIRST! I choose the stable versions of *nix
based operating systems because I don't like running into SEVERE
UNDOCUMENTED bugs like this. If I wanted to use my one and only
working computer to track down and fix/find work-arounds for things
like this, I'd run current.

> The -ignore tags are the domain of the

The tag was added because it was believed there was a workaround to
restore Mac Classic. Even if this always worked, it seems appalling
to me that an operating system of Debian's reputation wouldn't at
least make note of this bug in the installation instructions. As it
is, the workaround does not always work. It didn't work for me.
There are others it hasn't worked for. The squeeze-ignore tag was
added based on a misconception.

The bad news is, I really don't know what-all's wrong with partman,
and apparently, even though this bug has been around for years, no
one else does either, or hasn't admitted to so far as I've read.
The good news is, we don't have to. NetBSD's pdisk, which they have
graciously ported to Linux, is a time-tested way of modifying Apple
Partition Maps without breaking other operating systems, provided
you don't re-initialize the disk or touch partitions that you
shouldn't touch. So, simply offer users a choice between pdisk and
partman, with a strong warning that if they are multi-booting,
especially with Mac Classic, that they should really use pdisk
because partman is broken and might damage their Mac Classic
irreparably (short of wiping the hard drive).

Then there's yaboot, which is a whole 'nother can of worms, because
it doesn't work right if you do it the "recommended way", but is
has a whole slew of protections to protect you from doing in the
"wrong way", even though the wrong way does work. I managed to get
yaboot (but not ofboot.b... fortunately, yaboot is the essential
bit) working, but it was horrendously difficult (at least, for an
operating system of Debian's reputation) because it didn't want me
to configure it that way.

>Certainly adding significant new translatable text tends not to be
>straight forward.

Well, could you translate this much?

"WARNING!!! This installer may break other operating systems on
your computer (especially Mac Classic). In some cases, it may be
impossible to repair without wiping your hard drive and re-
installing everything. DO NOT PROCEED IF THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE
RISK. If that is so, we recommend you use a Unix-based operating
system that does not have this problem, like OpenBSD, or one that
has a well-documented work-around, like NetBSD. There is a very
complicated work-around for Debian, but unfortunately, we were
unable to translate it to all languages."

Or if that's too much for you, just the first three or four
sentences.

Bug#627568: [xserver-xorg-video-nouveau] Dual head problem: Flicker on 2nd monitor using GeForce 8500 GT

Yes, if the primary monitor is disconnected, leaving only the 2nd one
the blinking was still present.

The 2nd monitor is a fairly old IIyama Vision Master Pro 452. It always
used to be a bit funny with the old nv driver, although I have to say,
the Nvidia proprietary driver never gave a problem with this old monitor.

On the other hand, using xrandr is much more configurable and sensible
than Nvidia's silly "twinview" setup. ;-)

Removing the Nvidia proprietary driver has left my system completely
free of non-free and contrib packages!

> Try booting with drm_kms_helper.poll=0 kernel parameter.

That does it! Well done: No more flicker!

In case any readers are not familiar with grub2 I edited:
/etc/default/grub
thus:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet drm_kms_helper.poll=0"

and ran (as root)
update-grub2

then rebooted.

Thanks Sven.

Bug#627630: grub-pc: core.img too large after recent update, raid1+lvm+xfs

2011-05-22 Thread Eamonn Hamilton
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.99-4
Severity: important

Hi,

After a recent update a couple of days ago on grub, the generated core.img no
longer fits in my boot block. The system is setup as raid1+lvm with xfs
filesystems.

Any suggestions as to how to shrink the core.img, as expanding the install
area isn't an option short-term.

regards,
Eamonn

Meh, here's a better fix. Leaving out ports this time, since sparc
is enough to give the picture. Is the enum trick valuable enough to
be worth making a header hard to read and maintain?

When debugging don't enable daemonizing, instead run it in foreground
to see what messages, if any, it prints.

But this is, with a very good chance, #625571 - migration
fails on 32bit userspace always. That bug is finally fixed,
after more than 2 years, and is pending upload after we will
sort out other, more important issues.

Again, this is a very bad idea to run it in backrgound when
debugging. It's impossible to tell what exactly it is doing
this way.

So, should this bug then be assigned back to dpkg?
Is there anything which prevents fixing this bug?

Bug#627629: short justification why 'foo' can not substitute 'sisu'

2011-05-22 Thread Jonas Stein
Package: sisu
Severity: wishlist

may be i did not search well enough, but i did not find a justification
why 'foo' can not substitute 'sisu'. Even on irc #sisu i could not get
the answer.

*) With foo i mean the whole farm of markup languages with their
corresponding converters like REST, Docbook and so on.

I would be nice to find a short hint like "sisu can do x and y while
others can only do x or y"

This might be a important part of the package description.

What kind of a logfile is /var/log/pm-powersave.log ?
With no concept of timestamps included, it is a very different file from
its brothers there in /var/log/ .

This can be done automatically - as part of update-flashplugin-nonfree perhaps?
See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=460254 (attachment of

Bug#627626: [cegui-mk2] please provide ceguiogrerenderer

2011-05-22 Thread Adrian Friedli
Package: cegui-mk2
Version: 0.7.5-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi Muammar,

Ceguiogrerenderer seems to have moved (back) from Ogre to CEGUI. ogre-1.7.1-1
does not provide libceguiogrerenderer anymore. So please provide a version of
cegui with the ceguiogrerenderer included.

By adding libogre-dev to the build dependencies of cegui, the
ceguiogrerenderer will be built. Sadly the other cegui libs will link to
ceguiogrerenderer so there will be no use in splitting it up into a separate
package.

Regards, Adrian

Bug#627625: installation of sisu without installation of db server

2011-05-22 Thread Jonas Stein
Package: sisu
Severity: wishlist

i think sisu can work without sql server.

Selecting 'sisu' and 'sisu-pdf' suggests 'sisu-postgresql'

In some environments its forbidden to install a db server,
but it might be allowed to run a local sisu text converter.

So it would be nice to install sisu without any sql deamons/server
after selecting 'sisu'.

Yep, just tried this on top of 1.63 and it works just fine. Thanks!

Are you planning a release soon or should we include the patch into

Please, feel free to patch it to Debian directly. We can remove the
patch when a new version is released, since I think it will take some
more weeks.

Hi!
I am getting the same exact error message and pdebuild refuses to build
my packages...

The attached patch fixes the bug for me.

I hope the Debian pbuilder maintenance team can apply my patch real
soon now, since this bug is probably preventing many pbuilder-managed
chroot environments to be used normally.

P.S.: Legal details: I think my patch is too trivial to be covered by
my copyright; anyway, should it turn out to be actually copyrighted,
I hereby release it under the same terms as pbuilder itself (that is to
say, under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2 or
any later version).

Bug#622649: linux-image-2.6.38-2-amd64: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6

2011-05-22 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Dear maintainers,

this bug is also and still in 2.6.39-rc7-amd64 from debian/experimental.
Jonathan's patch did not work. Maybe we should revert to the ohci-hcd module
from the last working kernel? I checked some livefile systems, with newer
kernels - they got the same result (for example BackTrack5).

I suggest, to merge this bugreport and #620848.

With this bug, these kernels are still not usable for me (and I suppose, there
might be other people with the same problem, too)

Please don't feel annoied by me, I just wanted to mention, there is IMO a big
problem. Thank you for your considerateness.

Best regards

Hans

It's a passive, got an active on order now, so I will see if that does
the trick. Thanks for the advice.

Bug#627619: libc6-dev: please define RLIMIT_RTTIME and increment RLIM_NLIMITS

Thanks. Quick notes:

The file to patch is sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/resource.h. It
hasn't been updated upstream, either. The relevant Linux change was
v2.6.25-rc1~1237^2~29 (sched: SCHED_FIFO/SCHED_RR watchdog timer,
2008-01-25).

I wonder why the enum trick in bits/resource.h is not ported to
Linux so we could just #include ? That would save
alpha, sparc, and mips from having to maintain their own copies of
bits/resource.h. Lacking that, something like the following might
work. Untested.

I have to admit that I tend to write changelogs in the present tense.
That may not be universal, but it certainly seems to be the style
adopted by the couple of packages I've been most closely involved in
(devscripts itself and lintian), and e.g. dpkg and apt from a very quick
selection from this machine.

Please don't do that. The -ignore tags are the domain of the Release
Team and shouldn't be altered without agreement.

I don't know partman well enough to know whether your suggestions on how
to modify it to better support your scenario are easily integrateable
(is that even a word?), although it does sound like it might be quite a
large change to try and make to squeeze's d-i now that it's released.
Certainly adding significant new translatable text tends not to be
straight forward.

Are you using native DP or a DP to HDMI converter? If you are using a
converter, is it an active or passive converter? If it's passive,
you'll have the same limitation as before.

OK. I don't see any problem with the package on mentors.debian.net, so
I've gone ahead and sponsored it.

I have no objection as such, but I feel that this ought to be a change
made by a more regular sponsor - I'm really just parachuting in here to
help out with the libev4 transition.

Any chances to include this patch, if it has no known issues?
I've just applied it here locally and I'm testing it now.

I'm running a small local WISP and would like to start doing some
accounting, 4GB was a lot for dialup but isn't anymore for PPPoE over
wired LAN or 802.11a/n wireless, with mostly always-on customers.
The counters seem to be 32-bit even when running on a 64-bit box.

Thanks,

CityHash provides hash functions designed for fast hashing of strings. The

Bug#627619: libc6-dev: please define RLIMIT_RTTIME and increment RLIM_NLIMITS

2011-05-22 Thread brian m. carlson
Package: libc6-dev
Version: 2.13-4
Severity: wishlist

On amd64, /usr/include/bits/resource.h defines RLIM_NLIMITS as 15.
However, in /usr/include/asm-generic/resource.h, the kernel defines
RLIM_NLIMITS as 16 and instead defines RLIMIT_RTTIME as 15. This
appears to be part of the reason behind #625226, so fixing it soon would
be appreciated.

Bug#576427: versioning mix-up

Hi,

Help is always welcome. Personally I haven't been spending a great
deal of time/effort on compiz because the manner in which the upstream
author manages the project is *really* burdensome and it's really easy
for me to lose energy/time/motivation.

I think the original plan was to move to the 0.9.x version, and we
started that with uploads to experimental a couple months back. however,
the software proved to be less than super stable (crashy, leaking memory,
etc), so it hasn't been transitioned into unstable.

unfortunately i made the mistake of doing the experimental-targeted work
in the unstable branch, thinking it'd be a quick transition, and now we're
stuck in a kind of in-between state unsure of what the next upload to unstable
will be.

and it's already there. the versions are all messed up because
the upstream author never took the time to push out the proper tags,
but I believe everything is approximately 0.9.4.

if you'd like to help with updating the compiz packages, you're more than
welcome to join up :)

Bug#627617: rdup: fails to build with 'ld --as-needed'

(Originally reported as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rdup/+bug/770793.)

rdup fails to build with 'ld --as-needed', because it invokes the linker
with libraries before objects on the link line. See
http://wiki.debian.org/ToolChain/DSOLinking#Only_link_with_needed_libraries
for more details. The following patch corrects this.

  * Place objects before libraries on the link line.

Bug#626732: src:postgresql-9.1: missing source for src/backend/snowball/libstemmer/

2011-05-22 Thread Martin Pitt
severity 626732 wishlist
thanks

Hello Ansgar,

Ansgar Burchardt [2011-05-14 21:02 +0200]:
> Severity: serious
> Justification: missing source

The files are under BSD, which does not have a requirement of shipping
the source ("preferred form of modification"), unlike the GPL.
Therefore I'm downgrading the severity.

> As stated in src/backend/snowball/README, the files in
> src/backend/snowball/libstemmer/ are generated and the original source

The original files are in a separate project (snowball), and
duplicating it in the postgresql git tree would not be appropriate
IMHO. It should be possible to build depend on libstemmer-dev and
regenerate the C files during build, but I don't think it would buy us
enough to justify the potential breakage. It's similar to using a
pregenerated yacc .c file instead of rebuilding the .y every time.

Thanks,

Martin

I reproduced this on my Arch Linux box using gcc v4.6. Some
optimizations in -O1 and -O2 cause this SSE2 code to fail. I did
bisection testing of all of the specific options these enable and
isolated them:
# Since gcc 4.6, this optimization enabled with -O1 causes
filter_line_sse2 to crash.
echo "OPTIMISATIONS+=-fno-tree-dominator-opts"
# Since gcc 4.6, this optimization enabled with -O2 causes
filter_line_sse2 to crash.
echo "OPTIMISATIONS+=-fno-tree-pre"

The solution is in the next version or you can configure with
--disable-sse2 since only the YADIF deinterlacer uses SSE2 and it also
has a SSE version that still works.

Bug#298185: pppoe-server kernel mode

2011-05-22 Thread Marek Michalkiewicz
Any progress on this? Upstream also seems to be little maintained,
the latest rp-pppoe release (3.10) is almost 3 years old now.

I'm using the PPPoE server in kernel mode (updated to 3.10, and rebuilt
with a few patches I found floating around) for a small local WISP.
It works, but right now I have a fairly simple setup (just chap-secrets
to set a static IPv4 address for each customer, no IPv6 and no RADIUS),
and I'm not sure if it will be up to the task in the future, or will it
be better to move to Mikrotik Routerboard (power-saving reasons too).

Thanks,
Marek

svn: To better debug SSH connection problems, ensure the 'ssh' item in the
[tunnels] section of your Subversion configuration file does not have a -q

OK, the actual situation: the 'svn+ssh' tunnel defaults to calling
'$SVN_SSH -q -o ControlMaster=no' where $SVN_SSH defaults to 'ssh'.
(The ControlMaster part is a Debian patch that probably is not needed
anymore.) The current default config file, which you can see in
/etc/subversion/config, shows this default, commented out. Your
~/.subversion/config probably doesn't show the -q because it was added
some years after you first ran svn. (svn doesn't update your config
file when it runs, it just writes a static file if the file doesn't
already exist.)

Given the above, and given I don't think it'd be easy to determine from
the point that error is thrown whether the 'svn+ssh' tunnel is a
compiled default or has been changed, do you have any better
suggestions for the error? I'd be happy to improve the error in Debian
and upstream.

Thanks,
