Hello Daniel and other aptitude devels;

I'm fine with helping to deal with these localization and English
usage bugs reports, but I need help in properly handling git commits
to avoid screwing your workflow.

When a translation is sent, shoudl I commit it to the "master" branch
or to the debian branch? I will anyway need to commit the changelog
entry to the "debian" branch, right?

Or shoudl I commit everything to the debian branch?

Or something else?

Thanks for the heads-up!

I changed this in SVN. Do you guys have any other change made in
Ubuntu which we would need to bring back in Debian? (yeah, I know, I
can check that in the PTS...I'm actually just lazy..:-))

If a user's setup is direct access to scsi device, be it either sd
naming scheme or persistent names, it appears that no entry for it is
created in /sys/block sysfs hierarchy.

In this scenario, the multipath-tools' stop target fails thusly breaking
all upgrades.

Current resolution is to run the init script to survive errors, i.e. "!sh

If to use %template(StrPair) std::pair;
instead of "using std::pair", swig executes fine. I didn't test the
generated code though.

use tc to manage routing queues.

For example:

Similarly, trying to do anyting "useful" fails:

found no better way to fix the missing flags, but as autoreconf
is called anyway it shouldn't be too much trouble. If possible
the patch should be sent to upstream to fix the build system.

`hardening-check` from the hardening-includes package and check
the build log (for example with blhc [4]) (hardening-check
doesn't catch everything):

Bug#655405: Ogg::Vorbis::Header::PurePerl

As the author and maintainer of this application (pacpl), I can assure you
that Ogg::Vorbis::Header::PurePerl is by no means a "drop-in replacement".
 All functionality for modifying ogg tags is currently (and likely will
always be) unimplemented.  The ::PurePerl version is good for nothing more
than 'reading' ogg tags.  After spending a day or so looking for
alternatives, Ogg::Vorbis::Header is still the best option I have seen thus
far for 'writing' ogg tags/comments.

I am of course open to suggestions, so if anyone has another module that
will do the same, I'm all ears.

The attached patch fixes the issue. It's quite big, but as the
build system overwrites all flags this is the simplest solution I
found to enable all hardening flags. If possible it should be
sent to upstream (maybe minus the $(filter-out ...) parts - which
are only necessary for PIE).

To check if all flags were correctly enabled you can use
`hardening-check` from the hardening-includes package and check
the build log (for example with blhc [4]) (hardening-check
doesn't catch everything):

It's not clear why, but with the new nspr build the renderer does not

I took a look at it now.

I think the following issues need to be resolved first:

1. The changelog entry should not refer to ppa, and should read
"unstable" as distribution.  If the package was never in Ubuntu, I would
also suggest to remove all prior changelog entries and just have one
entry saying "Initial upload (Closes: #602126)." or so.

2. The copyright information seems to be incomplete, a quick recursive
grep for "Copyright" in the ase/ directory yields at least CAMP, Jesper
Friis and Neil Martinsen-Burrell as additional copyright holders.

3. io/fortranfile.py also has a BSD-like license which must be added to
copyright.  Possibly other files have different copyright as well, I
have not checked them all.

Those are suggestions and not required for upload:

1. It might be a good idea to run testase on package build as well, e.g.
to catch possible issues with different architectures (a long shot I
guess, as it seems to be all-python)

2. If you want to maintain ASE as part of debichem, you should set
"Debichem Team " as Maintainer
in debian/control and set yourself as Uploaders:

3. The patch "debian-changes-3.6.0.2515-1~ppa3" in debian/patches should
get split up into logical parts with descriptive file names each.
However, if the next upstream version has this patch anyway, it might
not be worth the effort.

4. If all the changes mentioned in README.Debian are in the above patch,
you do not need to mention them there and can delete the file

The CPPFLAGS hardening flags are missing because they are ignored
by the build system. For more hardening information please have a
look at [1], [2] and [3].

The attached patch "fixes" the issue, but it's only a dirty
workaround. The upstream build system should be fixed to not
overwrite CPPFLAGS at all (CPPFLAGS are only for preprocessor
flags anyway), autoconf/automake provide ways to handle that.

To check if all flags were correctly enabled you can normally use
`hardening-check` from the hardening-includes package and check
the build log (for example with blhc [4]) (hardening-check
doesn't catch everything):

$ hardening-check /usr/bin/loqui
/usr/bin/loqui:
 Position Independent Executable: yes
 Stack protected: yes
 Fortify Source functions: no, only unprotected functions found!
 Read-only relocations: yes
 Immediate binding: yes

Even though the "Fortify Source functions" are now correctly
passed, they are not used at the moment. But that's fine.

(Position Independent Executable and Immediate binding is not
enabled by default.)

Use find -type f \( -executable -o -name \*.so\* \) -exec
hardening-check {} + on the build result to check all files.

I've started reworking a bit the strategy logic, for starters I'm
adding a "none" strategy so that it can be reset explicitly.

Yeah, I'm not very thrilled with the behaviour changing depending on
the relative order of the -Z and -S options. Same options being
overridden by later instances seems fine though. I'll think about what
else might be feasible to do for a bit.

I'd rather opt for a depends here since gnome-shell behaves errornously in
this regard if the package gkbd-applet is missing.

Doesn't the Debian policy state that a package has to be a dependency for
another package if the latter does not work properly without it?

Also, most users probably won't be able to figure out how to fix this error
with gkbd-keyboard-display missing unless they do a web research. The
additional disk space required for gkbd-capplet is ~57 kB, so I don't see
why anyone wouldn't want to install it in any case.

You're right, sorry. I'll use one type of patch in a bug report
in the future.

I still don't understand why changes to 10 lines count as
invasive. They were minimal and fixed the problem (something
which wasn't possible without the patch). But I'll try to reduce
the size of the changes in future patches.

I thought that was pretty obvious. The links I provided introduce
the concept/ideas behind the hardening flags, the reason why some
may be missing and my report mentioned that some were missing in
debian/rules and in the build system.

It's true that I didn't provide exact details which flags were
missing, but I have reported many of these bugs and duplicating
the information in the patch and the report just takes too much
time (and doesn't provide any additional insights).

That wasn't my intention. I provided the background links to
clarify questions about hardening.

That's what I tried - and the solution you've applied to zlib
does exactly the same as my original patch, it patches
contrib/minizip/Makefile (I wasn't sure that the binaries created
in Makefile.in were only example files so I patched it as well).
So I don't understand your criticism about my patch.

See above. I admit it's not perfect, but the patch was simple and
I thought mentioning that the flags were missing, and where, is
enough - in addition to the patch.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I thought find would print an
error.

They are described in the hardening links I added to my original
patch. But you're right of course, hardening-check should disable
the check for them by default (and provide a way to check all
executables). I'll work on a patch when I have some time.

to an oops.  Separating the symptoms:

Bug#674718: imagemagick: incorrect handling of flattening small GIF frames

The following command generates an unexpectedly very large image for me:

convert -flatten -geometry '217x159!' 'foo.gif[0]' foo.jpg

using the attached foo.gif file. Depending on the relevant sizes, this
can either cause the command to SIGBUS (e.g. if /tmp/ runs out of space
when using the pixel cache), or it just generates a very large .jpg.
The expected output is a rather small 217x159 jpg image.

This appears to be because CloneImage scales the image->page size, in
addition to the position and other parameters. In the given GIF, the
logical screen size is 217x159, but the size of the first image block is
much smaller (like 1x4, or something like that? I don't remember).

So, in CloneImage, we have 217 columns and 159 rows. We scale
image->page.width, for instance, by 217/1, resulting in a page width of
217*217. And when we try to flatten all of the layers to generate the
resulting jpg, we get a really huge jpg, since we write the whole size
of the image->page.

The attached patch fixes this by just setting the cloned image page size
to the given number of columns and rows. Scaling the page x and y
coordinates I believe is still correct. I have no idea if scaling the
image->tile_offset is correct or not, since I'm not sure what it is, but
since it appears to be an offset, I would guess 'yes'.

I would get this checked out by someone more familiar with ImageMagick,
since I don't know if this patch breaks something else. I _think_ this
is approximately what GraphicsMagick does, but I'm not too sure; at
least, GraphicsMagick does not have the same issue.

The reason I say this might be considered a security issue is that this
may be used to bypass image size restrictions, and can potentially take
up a large amount of memory or disk when running 'convert' commands
against user input. ImageMagick is often used for generating thumbnails
for user-generated content, for instance, and a bug like this can result
in huge thumbnails from small images, or crashing the process that
generates them. I don't know if that's really a serious concern, though.

If we give CloneImage an image whose width/height is much smaller than
the page width/height, currently CloneImage can make the resulting
cloned page much larger than the specified columns/rows. This can
result in surprisingly huge images after an operation like:

convert -flatten -geometry '200x100!' 'foo.gif[0]' bar.jpg

Since we try to write out the full extents of the image page for the
result. So intead, specify the page width/height as the given number
of columns and rows, to limit the image size to what was requested.

but allow unencrypted access from local pcs.
As vsftp itself does only support this over multiple config files I noticed

init scripts are lacking support for multiple vsftpd config files (only 
/etc/vsftpd.conf is used)
It would be really great if we could support for multiple instances. Maybe 
create a folder vsftp instead of one 
vsftpd.conf file and then use vsftpd configfilename to start/stop this 
particular setup.

My guess would be that this is a duplicate of:

To work around it, try as root:

  mkdir -p /etc/ltsp/
  rm -rf /opt/ltsp/i386

and rerun ltsp-build-client.

The thing that triggered 667915 is handled better upstream now, and I'll upload 
a fix to Debian soon.

Could you provide more information about your environment? What was the qemu 
commandline you used to boot?

I can't reproduce this with the openbsd cd47.iso (tried qemu 1.0+dfsg-3, 
1.0.1+dfsg-1 and 1.1.0~rc3+dfsg-1 (not yet uploaded)), or cd48.iso or cd51.iso.

Sounds like it's still broken.

I had missed before that this was a 1999-era board.  Lots of those have
trouble with ACPI so in that light the symptoms seem less surprising.
I suspect the best Linux could do to address this is to automatically disable
acpi when appropriate.

you've provided enough information for the interested and the
workaround is discoverable enough.  Thanks for indulging my curiosity

Does that mean it is in fact the primary function of this login?  In
that case it's not quite a "for instance".

The idea was that calling it the admin web UI is a way of referring to
it that's intelligible even for people who haven't read the docs yet.
Still, it may make sense to put that information here too, as
something like: 

  Please enter the login of the LedgerSMB database administrative user. This
  login is needed for the administrative web user interface, typically at
  http://localhost/ledgersmb/setup.pl.

(But then you probably wouldn't want to repeat it all for the

I can't replicate this bug with 2.0.6, you are going to have to provide 
a test case. swig-2.0.5 introduced a regression which was fixed in 2.0.7

In debhelper 9.20120513 and later, dh_builddeb passes the options -z1
-Zxz -Sextreme to dpkg-deb when building udebs.  Unfortunately this
means there is no way to use a different compression type if the
packager prefers to do so:

exit code 2

Once a strategy has been set to "extreme" with -S, there is no way for
the packager to return to the default strategy using another option.
Compression types other than xz do not accept the extreme strategy, so
the upshot is that they cannot be used for udebs.

Here's a patch to address that.  Strategies are only meaningful in the
context of a particular compression type, so this patch teaches the -Z
option to reset the strategy to the default.

Without this change "dpkg-deb -Sextreme -Zxz" uses the extreme
strategy and this change breaks that.  A quick Google search does not
reveal anyone using those options out of order, but if there's a clean
way to avoid breaking the interface then I'd be interested.  (For
example, maybe the first -Z option should not reset the strategy,
while later ones would?  I can imagine the result being very
confusing.)

So I don't want to see this patch applied as is, but perhaps it can
provide some amusement.  What do you think?

I understand that how the package is presently set up is the standard
way to go about things, and I certainly wouldn't want to cause a bunch
of issues by having that changed.  However, I believe the potential for
issues is very real - mostly because I experienced them, and spent a few
hours tracking them down. At that time, I had the 1.48 libboost-*dev
packages as the 1.49 versions were being held back by apt-get.  I
manually removed the 1.48 versions to allow the 1.49 packages to be
installed, and after rebuilding the code I was working on, the issue I
had went away.

For info, I'm the lead developer on the CEGUI library, and the issue I
had was while working on the Ogre module for CEGUI. Obviously CEGUI is
a lot of code to suggest someone get to try and reproduce an issue, so
I've tried to create some code for a basic test case - though I
additionally acknowledge this may be quite hard to test because it
basically requires downgrading the libboost-*dev packages to 1.48.

I built this code with:
$ g++ main.cpp -g -O -lOgreMain

Basically, if the libboost-*dev packages are 1.48 and Ogre is built
against 1.49, the executable produced will hang in mutex code related
to the use of boost threads. If the installed libboost-*dev packages
match those used to build Ogre, the executable will display the message
and exit cleanly.

Another scenario I thought of (but did not experience directly) is if
a developer has code that uses boost-threads directly as well as
using Ogre. Here it would be natural for the developer to link their
code to libboost_thread and libOgreMain.  If the libboost-thread-dev
is, say, version 1.48, and libOgreMain - as you correctly pointed out -
has references to the 1.49 version of libboost_thread, the executable
would bring in two versions of the same lib (a linker warning is
produced announcing the possible conflict).  A developer could skip
directly linking libboost_thread and implicitly pick up the version
referenced by libOgreMain, but then they have the situation of having
compiled against the 1.48 headers but have the 1.49 library (which may
or may not be harmless, depending on whether ABI compatibility between
the two library versions was maintained - a rarity when dealing with
boost, I think).

I should probably add that, in my opinion, the potential for issues to
occur is highly unlikely to be limited to Ogre. I'm really not certain
what the best thing, or the right thing to do in this situation is.
All I can say is that the issues that can occur are indeed very real,
though probably would only ever affect a minority of users and only
when specific circumstances exist.

Regardless of what, if any, action is taken, I hope this helps to
explain the situation a little better.  It may also help someone in the
future if they're unfortunate enough to experience similar things, and
at the very least it gives me somewhere to point to if CEGUI users
report this as a bug in CEGUI ;)

Currently unsort fails to build on hurd-i386 because the symbol
IOV_MAX (the maximum number of items that can be passed to
writev/readv) is not defined. The POSIX standard doesn't guarantee
that IOV_MAX will be defined, rather it states that it should be
omitted if the limit can't be determined at compile time or no fixed
limit exists.[1]

The attached patch uses sysconf(_SC_IOV_MAX) to query the appropriate
limit at runtime rather than relying on IOV_MAX.

http://localhost/ledgersmb/setup.pl is how one gets in to it and only an

Contact - An initial contact was made
None - No reply to this issue so far
A dash indicates that no contact attempt was made so far

The fourth column states if the license is now ok:
It contains either the name of the license (in green), the word
"implicit" in blue if the licnese is given implicitly, unclear (in
orange) if the status is unclear or "no" in red if the license is not
ok.

The final column links to relevant e-mails, if any.

That sounds good. The other databases don't install or start their
daemons when I install the -dev package.

I guess that I need headers and libs. The server definetely doesn't
need to run as I fixed the disk filling issue by killing the server
and emptying /var/lib/mongodb and was still able to successfully build.

I think it's illustrative of the upstream for "GNU parallel" that

- It includes a /usr/bin/sql program, which is the best example of
  namespace pollution I have ever thought of.
- It has a completely absurd number of options including gems such as 
  --skip-first-line (because tail is too hard?), --trim (because sed is
  too hard to use?) --xargs (???), and has already grown real bloat
  that includes the ability to tranfer files between computers.
  It is 5143 lines of code, and the anthethesis of a simple, clean,
  well-designed unix command.
- The parallem program contains code that detects if stdin is a terminal
  and whines at the user in a most non-unix way.
- Its author is apparently not aware of this when responding to bug
  reports, and tries to use it as a justification to remove the --tollef
  compatability option, which it has nothing to do with.
- The --tollef compatability option is not compatible with even the
  first example on the man page of that program.
- The --tollef compatability option was, AFAIK, named without getting
  the permission of the person it refers to, and therefore essentially
  drags his good name through the mud.
- (It's also wasted far, far more of our collective time than it's worth.)

At this point, I feel that "GNU parallel" is at best doing nothing but
reinforcing negative stereotypes about the GNU project producing
bloatware, and at worst, indicates that the GNU project provides
false legitimacy to projects at this level of quality.

source package for the documentation.

I then reassigned them both to the aptitude package.

Bug#674700: Attempt to update Gnome on Debian kills system

I'm not sure which part of Gnome the problem is in, because it is a very
general problem.

I wrote a request for enhancement bug for Gnome about the lack of good
documentation for setting up dual monitors, and I offered to help fix it. 
Someone replied that this was because I was using an older version of Gnome
(2.30), but the new one (3) was better.  I found that the current stable
version of Debian (Squeeze) uses Gnome 2.30.  I asked why this wouldn't be
fixed in 2.30 since I guess if this is the version of Gnome included in the
stable version of Debian, it would help a lot of users to have this info.  He 
said he knew that more people used Gnome 3 because of his knowledge of
statistics and experience. I should still update Gnome by finding instructions 
on a site specific to my distribution.  Okay.

So I went here

attempting to upgrade to Gnome 3.

After this, I rebooted and found that it was still Gnome 2.30.  Also,
everything was going very slowly, the terminal window took a long time to open, 
there were errors like CPU overheated, throttled, Mixerapplet error, inode 
errors, etc.  I rebooted numerous times with progressively worse results, to 
the point that I wondered if it was a problem with the hardware, like the CPU 
or fan.  I wrote back to this person asking about this problem, but he said he 
knew nothing about Debian.

Anyways, it looks like I may have to wipe out my entire system, losing
applications and personal files, and try to reinstall it -- not just Gnome, but 
all of Debian Linux.  The last thing I am trying was someone else's advice to 
do an "aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade" to see if any newer packages 
solve the problem.

I have had to make ikiwiki-hosting conflict with parallel because even
with --tollef enabled by default, it fails to behave the same as
moreutils parallel does. Taking the first example from the man page:

   parallel sh -c "echo hi; sleep 2; echo bye" -- 1 2 3

   This runs three subshells that each  print  a  message,
   delay,  and  print  another message. If your system has
   multiple CPUs, parallel will run some of  the  jobs  in
   parallel, which should be clear from the order the mes‐
   sages are output.

joey@gnu:~>parallel.moreutils sh -c "echo hi; sleep 2; echo bye" -- 1 2 3
hi

bye

bye

This is becoming absurd. No program I have written, or have anything to
do with, prints nasty messages at a user who has the temerity to try to
talk to it via stdin. Certianly nothing in moreutils behaves this way.

2 minutes in the code would show you that this has nothing to do with
--tollef, as shown by this simple example

% parallel --gnu
parallel: Input is read from the terminal. Only experts do this on purpose.

Calling a program "sql" is somewhere in a spectrum between calling
a program "www" and calling a program "server". No point in that
spectrum makes much sense.

And the parallel to parallel seems tenuous at best, indeed
it seems limited to it being able to be called in parallel in order to
drop tables.

(... Which makes me wonder when GNU Parallel will include GNU rm?
And will you make it slower, broken, and divert the regular one without
warning the packages you break, like you did with moreutils and
ikiwiki-hosting? Oh, pardon the rant ...)

Ok, I just hoped that there would be a migration plan. Since I only
need it occaisonally I probably will need to build local copies for
these occasions.

Hi,

cleaning up my system from packages without source, I removed all the
virtuoso packages; aptitude didn't complain about any missing dependency
but since then I get from KDE the attached message:

Semantic Data Storage - Nepomuk Semantic Desktop needs the Virtuoso
RDF server to store its data. Installing the Virtuoso Soprano plugin
is mandatory for using Nepomuk.

I am NOT complaining about the fact that Virtuoso disappeared from
testing, I am complaining about the fact that Nepomuk doesn't depend on
Virtuoso but complains that it is absolutely required to work.
In my opinion, this should be at least a warrant for a "Recommends" if
not a "Depends".
I have seen that libnepomuk4 depends on libsoprano4 which depends on
soprano-daemon which _suggests_ virtuoso-minimal, but that is definitely
not a strong enough dependency, or Nepomuk shouldn't complain about a
missing Virtuoso and confuse (and annoy to be honest) Debian users.

action because this bug is a prety important one, in my opinion, and should be 
fixed as soon as possible. Sponsorship can take a while, especially if you 
added more stuff to your package. Therefore, I suggest submitting your patch to

when stracing it it shows that it lists the contents of /var/lib/apt/lists a

Ok.  What kernel are you applying these to?  Could you attach "dmesg"
output from the patched kernel?

I was hoping to get a quick sanity check that the other patches at
least didn't cause the kernel to explode :), but answers to more
important questions about them would indeed require info from people
with the matching hardware.  Will look around and then submit these
for inclusion in 3.2.y from kernel.org if they seem to be well tested.

I see Fathi being quite active.

I have made packages for libjpeg-turbo 1.2.0.  It builds OK.  (Not much
useful to replace current libjpeg due to conflicts caused with many
packages.  But who cares if it is used in the chroot to build virtualgl
:-)   But I am not really up to maintaining this complicated package.

My build result and git record are here as tar:

Since -dev package is the only ones desparatedly needed, ... This is the
most important thing to get now.

Maybe in post-wheezy, people can discuss transition from libjpeg to
libjpeg-turbo.  This package is very tricky since it tries to replace
libjpeg.

I want the bug report to actually be useful, yes.  :)  It's always good to
have a reproducible test case.

Thank you!  Those instructions are very good.  I'm copying them to the bug
report so that the bug report contains clear information.

When I did this (on a laptop with 2GB of memory and 2.5GB of swap and a
405MB tmpfs /tmp), the movie exhausted all space in /tmp.  It then kept
playing without any trouble, and the system never started swapping or had
any other performance issues.  However, /tmp was completely full, and
creating any other files in /tmp resulted in errors (which I know can
cause all sorts of problems for other programs that assume they can always
create small files in /tmp).

I didn't continue to play the movie through to the end, so I don't know if
the movie playback would encounter problems at the point at which the
buffered movie exhausted /tmp or if the Flash player would have coped by
windowing the streaming.
