Bug#675563: chromium: builds against embedded binary binutils-gold that does not include source
Package: chromium Version: 20.0.1132.21~r139451-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 2.1 This package builds against a embedded binary (compiled) ld.gold linker. Not only does this break builds against architectures that are not i386 or amd64, but this is, from my understandings, a severe violation of debian policy. Version 18 of this package successfully builds against Debian's ld.bfd, making this also a regression. Also, with this version of the package, the only version available in the archive is the uploaders .deb no other architectures have been successfully built. Which is not a good sign. While I would love to see chromium be part of Debian, it needs to play nice (which is admittedly hard for this package). This version of the package should be immediately removed from the archives until it can link against the Debian-packaged linkers (either ld.bfd or ld.gold). I noticed this while trying to get this package to build on armel. If ir-keytable searched for relative filenames in both /etc/rc_keymaps and /lib/udev/rc_keymaps, then /etc/rc_maps.cfg could use entirely relative filenames by default, eliminating the second step. Bug#658264: xpdf totally unusable due to memory corruption in globalParams class (namespace conflict with libpoppler)
Just out of interest: Is this really a namespace conflict? As I understand the code, xpdf and libpoppler should want to use an object of same class from the same namespace, but due to some reason, the class code was duplicated to xpdf. I'm not c++ expert, but perhaps this was to make linking of xpdf simpler. I did a short analysis before reading this bug report by myself ( http://www.halfdog.net/Security/2012/XpdfCrashAnalysisUbuntuPrecise/ ). So from my opinion, with the patch attached, this will fix the problem only for some combination of xpdf/poppler versions and will make problem reappear in future. Please adjust your package to use dh_python2, which can be a fairly easy change. Same issue here, with brasero 3.2.0-4. Installing genisoimage fixes the
problem, so it looks like a dependency is indeed missing. Setting the
severity accordingly.
OTOH, it is not clear to me if brasero is capable of using something
else instead of genisoimage. If it is the case, a lower severity might
be warranted, but then it's not clear to me why that other thing is not
installed (and used) by default.
My setup is a few month old testing installation, immediately upgraded
to unstable, which I've been following closely on a daily basis. I
haven't installed brasero directly, but it got installed as a dependency
of gnome metapackages, so I think it's fair to expect it comes with all
needed components to burn data DVDs.

avconv converts the video, but not with the parameters necessary for a low
powered device (i.e., Baseline Profile H.264).

Hi! The problem is that apt-listchanges seems to be trying to read from stdin, which naturally does not work, as PackageKit is a background daemon. Instead, all questions should be asked using Debconf and all messages should be shown this way too. Can you verify this? Of yes, I'll assign this to apt-listchanges developers and ask them to fix that or to provide an environment var for us to disable apt-listchanges packagekitd is running, as workaround. I copied /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions from a machine which had not been updated and this allowed update-initramfs to build a new, bootable ramdisk. Note For Googlers: I believe that the closed bug 659948 is a duplicate of this one, and it suggests ln -s / /rootfs as a workaround. I have found a similar bug reported upstream [1]. It has a patch attached at
[2]. I tested a patch and it seems to work. I can't tell for sure since the
bug is not 100% reproducible but I tried a bunch of times and my bug script
has never failed.
I attach a debdiff for the almost-ready-to-be-uploaded package which contains
that patch. Thank you for considering. The bug breaks pkgkde-getbuildlogs in
pkg-kde-tools (incomplete logs are received) hence it's pretty annoying.

the POSIX spec [1] does mention 'struct flock' having a order of members
that matches the Linux version.

The FreeBSD *kernel* on the other hand does not seem to obey this
ordering [2]. Obviously, glibc has to model the flock structure after

I fail to understand how a drive can be a member of the 'disk' group. Please enlighten me. (Being offline, I can't read the mentionned bug right now, but still, the package description should make sense by itself, without needing to access online resources.) Boot on Debian, plug a USB/FireWire drive (key or HDD) on, and execute 'ls -l /dev/sd*': You should see /dev/sda and its partitions as members of the 'disk' group (and maybe also /dev/sdb* if there is a second internal HDD). And you should see the USB drives and their partitions as members of the 'floppy' group. Now type, from your user account: 'groups'. If 'floppy' is in the list, it means you have low-level write access on devices of this group. You should not be member of the 'disk' group. For example, you told me about Tails. So, boot on it (the LiveUSB, of course) find the drive which your system is running from (here, we say /dev/sdb), and, as the normal user, just type 'shred -vzn0 /dev/sdb'. Now your 'secured' system is lost. So, find the drive hosting the running system and protect it from user mistakes is what I call 'fix a security issue' or 'make the system more robust'. Other optional features for the desktop environment (based on Udisks). Such as? By setting: UDISKS_SYSTEM_INTERNAL UDISKS_PRESENTATION_HIDE UDISKS_PRESENTATION_ICON_NAME UDISKS_PRESENTATION_NAME for devices listed in BILIBOP_RULES_* variables in /etc/bilibop/bilibop.conf (see udisks(7) for some details). As said above, this is optional, and only for convenience: hide partitions, or show them with icons and/or names different than the defaults, or make the user able or not to mount them from the filemanager with or without su/sudo password. As said in the documentation of the package, all this can be bypassed with pmount(1). This is not a security layer. bilibop-lockfs: make a standard installation to behave like a LiveUSB. Can be used as an alternative (and enhancement) of the fsprotect package. Interesting. What makes it different from (or better than) fsprotect and live-boot? In comparison with fsprotect, bilibop-lockfs has the following features: 1. whitelist based configuration: when bilibop-lockfs is enabled, all local fs are protected. 2. not only filesystems are set readonly, but also block devices 3. swap device management/policy (use it, don't use it, use it noauto, or use it only if encrypted) 4. notifications are send to the user at startup to say her if temporary or permanent changes are allowed or not, and where (mountpoints) The section 2 is one of the features that hardens the standard rules and policies: it makes the system unbreakable (unless with a hammer?). For live-boot, I don't know. I've not studied the question: can it be used on a standard system ? I use 'LiveUSB' comparison because the system is running from a USB key/HDD, and nothing is written on the partition containing the system. The main difference is that a standard system (I say 'standard' by opposition with 'live') is easier to maintain than a live system. For that, boot in 'recovery mode' (this disables 'lockfs'), update your system or reconfigure such or such application, and reboot.
