Install goes without any problems. However after install computer
is unbootable it even doesn't come to GRUB menu, just says
no bootable medium found. Still it's possible to boot from USB
stick in resque mode. When I try to reinstall GRUB it fails to do
 so because of GPT

 Here is error message
grub-installer: grub-setup: warn: This GPT partition label has no
BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible!

 Some googling reveals following links:

 * http://grub.enbug.org/BIOS_Boot_Partition
 * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-base/+bug/506670
 * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/parted/+bug/107326

When GPT is used and it's silently used with 2TB+ disk GRUB require
small partition so I made another attempt to install debian.

 == Attempt 2. ==

During install I created small (1MB) partition and marked is as
bios_grub. GRUB installs without any errors or warnings after that
but system is still unbootable. I can boot in resque mode from
USB stick and run 'grub-install /dev/sda' in the shell or
reinstall grub from menu no errors reported but system still
 fail to boot

It looks like an issue in grub-installer, maybe similar to #548156.
Thanks for your report.

This makes ifup fail during boot and the system is left without
networking. The strange thing is that ifupdown support read-only /
just fine normaly. The postinst script makes /etc/network/run a
link to /dev/shm/network if /etc/network/run is mising
  and /dev/shm exists.

So is /dev/shm missing during DI?

The fix for this was quite easy:
% rm -rf /etc/network/run
% dpkg-reconfigure ifupdown

  #387611

Nope. /etc/network/run does exist. It is just created wrong because
/dev/shm was not mounted in DI. This really is a DI bug.

If you find out where this should belong to then the install report
 can be closed.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. As I don't exactly know which d-i
package is faulty here, I reassign to debian-installer pseudo package.
You may adjust the severity and update the title of the clone if it's
not accurate.

Thanks again for your report,

Denis

At first I made / too small and it failed much later during the
installation of the kernel image. Debian kernels are HUGE
compared to my usual build-to-fit custom kernel.
It would be good if the installer would know the size requirement
for all the usual mountpoints people use and check if the defined
partitions have sufficient space. The numbers should be known for at
least the standard task, more would be better.

This may also be a wishlist.

Thanks for the follow-up. Since grub is apparently not able to generate

bug in grub rather than in the installer.
Hence, reassigning and merging with #568639 (winxp partition detected,

update-grub should call the script '/etc/grub.d/30_os-prober'. What if
you call it directly? Does it return any error? You may also call

Maybe some details about your partitions (or a complete installation

Bug#600320: Installation: set password for root; did not create a user; could not login after 1st reboot.

2010-11-22 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hello,

I'm trying to help a bit on triaging installation reports.

Here, the main problem (as per the bug title and part of the report)
seems to be (quoting John Hunter [2010-10-16]):
I set up the root password but declined to create any
[more] users. The install apparently finished OK and then I rebooted.
Upon reboot, the system would not let me log in as root so that I
could not manually set up /etc/password, /etc/shadow, /etc/group
 and /etc/sudoers.

So, starting from that, I tried to reproduce this by doing a fresh
(KVM) installation. I set a root password but did not create any
regular user. The installation completed normally (just had to go back
twice in the installation procedure to be able to skip the user
creation step) and, upon reboot, I actually had no problem logging-in
as root.
I would then say that this bug is not reproducible and its severity
may be downgraded. The partition formatting debate is probably another
issue.

Hope this helps...

Bug#586340: libelmersolver-5.5.0: should depend on mumps

2010-10-29 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hello Adam,

Le vendredi 29 octobre 2010, Adam C Powell IV a écrit :
This fix has been in the alioth repository for some time, and I more
recently added a configure test for MUMPS in Elmer itself. I've been
using it, it works quite well, going from 4 - 8 cores in a 300k
element run roughly doubles the speed (but it should scale quite a
 bit larger than this).

Great news!

This will land in unstable as soon as it gets through NEW, but will
FTBFS because of bug 589763 which only requires a binNMU of ScaLAPACK.
I'll use that as an excuse to bump the severity of 589763 to serious,
so it finally gets some attention before the squeeze release.

Ok, this sounds legitimate. Also, I tried to rebuild scalapack as you
suggested in #589763 (no source change) and I can confirm that atlas
does not appear anymore in dependencies of any scalapack binary
packages.

Though this won't get into squeeze because of its freeze status, it
should get into Ubuntu Nutty, and is already in my Opennovation Ubuntu
 Lucid repository at www.opennovation.org/ubuntu/ .

Thank you for your work in Debian and have a nice day!

The text editor chosen by zim to edit sources (from the Tools menu) is
quite surprising. For instance, on one of my computer it tries to

Ideally, one would expect the user's default text editor to be selected

By the way, is this configurable?

2010-10-15 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: evolution-mapi
Version: 0.30.3-2+b1
Severity: grave

Hi,

Just in case, I confirm this bug which renders evolution-mapi unusable
(as MAPI does not appear in server type list).
All information that Yves-Alexis asked for look similar on my system.

Cheers,

Bug#573076: claws-mail: does not show/download bodies of some message (filtering related issue)

2010-09-27 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi Ricardo,

Le lundi 27 septembre 2010, Ricardo Mones a écrit :
And does the workaround proposed by the OP of the upstream bug work
 for you?

Indeed, moving the message to a different folder makes the message body
appear again.

Anyway the network log has been requested by upstream but no one
has been given. Maybe you can attach yours (removing sensitive
information), as it's probably the only way upstream has to really
 fix this bug.

I'm attaching two log files, corresponding to the same message sent
twice and received either with the filter (w_filter.log) or without the
filter (wo_filter.log).
Do you want me to comment and attach the files on the upstream report
as well?

Bug#597911: Workspace switcher broken for users of Xmonad

2010-09-25 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

Joachim Breitner a écrit :
Ah, interesting: When I move the panel from the left edge to the top
edge, the workspaces become visibile. When I move the panel back to
the left edge, they stay visible, but are disformed: The workspace
switcher is as wide as my panel (32px), as high as it was when the
panel was horizontal (also 32px) and the individual workspaces are
arranged horizontally as very thin vertical bars.

Killing gnome-panel goes back to a single black dot.

Can you check if the problem occurs for you with a vertical panel?

I confirm, there are indeed some problems with vertical panels, even
with metacity as a window manager. The workspace switcher is barely
usable (thin vertical bars). Then, if I kill gnome-panel (or restart the
session), the workspace switcher just disappears from the screen
(1280x800). Setting the panel back to horizontal mode makes it appear
again...

Cheers,

Denis

Bug#597911: Workspace switcher broken for users of Xmonad

2010-09-24 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi Joachim,

Le vendredi 24 septembre 2010, Joachim Breitner a écrit :
another problem with the workspace switcher, introduced by verison
2.30.2-2: When using the xmonad window manager, the workspace switcher
is now empty (i.e. a single small black dot). It worked perfectly with
 the previous version.

That's strange, I can not reproduce what you describe with my regular
xmonad configuration nor with the minimal/gnome xmonad.hs:

  import XMonad
  import XMonad.Config.Gnome

  main = xmonad gnomeConfig

The workspace switcher appears as usual.
I cannot see any relevant difference in packages version, but maybe I'm
missing something...

Bug#596705: meta-gnome2: separate gnome-devel-dbg from gnome-dbg

2010-09-13 Thread Denis Laxalde
Source: meta-gnome2
Version: 1:2.30+1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

As per its name and description, the purpose of gnome-dbg package seems
to be to provide debugging symbols for the Gnome desktop environment.
However, it depends on several -dbg packages of development programs
(e.g. anjuta, devhelp) which are gathered in the gnome-devel
meta-package.
Would it be possible to add a gnome-devel-dbg package that would depend
on such -dbg packages to reduce the footprint of gnome-dbg?

Thanks for considering,

Denis

I have an IMAP account for which Claws-mail don't download message
bodies when they are quite small (typically a few KB).
This seems to be related to whether there is or no a filter on the
 inbox.
Typically, I have a custom spam filter (based on a header from my
provider) and when it is NOT activated, Claws-mail succesfully
download messages bodies (whatever their size).
I then have to choose between seeing spam or not being able to read
 small e-mail...

Please let me know if you need more information.

The account for which this happens is actually an Exchange 2007 / IMAP
one, as in the aforementioned upstream bug.

Denis

Bug#594256: epiphany-browser: unable to download/save links from arxiv.org because of unproper user-agent

2010-08-24 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.30.3-1

Hi,

Epiphany fails to download or save links (pdf files e.g.) from
http://arxiv.org website. Apparently (as said by arXiv website), it does
not supply a proper user-agent. A 403 error is returned. This happens
only from the contextual menu (right click) Download/Save as link,
direct actions work fine.
To reproduce, go for example at http://arxiv.org/list/math/new and try
to download a pdf from the context menu.

Cheers,

Bug#589509: evince: ugly rendering of images in PDF

2010-08-14 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

Lionel Elie Mamane a écrit :
 Package: evince
 Version: 2.30.3-1
 Severity: normal

evince displays the attached PDF (basically a big image for the whole
page) in a very ugly, pixelated manner, to the point where it is
 difficult to read.

xpdf, on the other hand, displays it quite nice.

Maybe the difference is that xpdf uses anti-aliasing whereas evince
 does not?

This looks similar to #533138 -- originally reported against evince and
reassigned to poppler. I've tried with the patched version of
libpoppler-glib4 and your document displays fine.
If things do not move in poppler in the meantime, maybe the evince
maintainers could push this patch [1] for Squeeze? ;)

Bug#582235: very low display quality on some documents

2010-08-14 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

W. Martin Borgert a écrit :
 Package: evince
 Version: 2.30.1-2
 Severity: normal

For some documents, Evince shows a much lower display quality than
Xpdf. In fact, the documents are almost unreadable with Evince. See
the example PNGs, I've attached to this report.

Maybe this has sth. to do with anti-aliasing?
Maybe this is the same error as
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/poppler/+bug/92296 ?

This might be the same (poppler) issue as bugs #589509 and #533138. I've
attached a patch [1] to the latter bug report. If you want to try it and
see it solves your problem...

Thanks,

Denis

Bug#580865: full screen mode does not resize to full screen

2010-08-14 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

Giuseppe Sacco a écrit :
 Package: evince
 Version: 2.30.1-2

When selecting full screen mode pressing the F11 key, the PDF page
is not shown in full screen. I still see a small border on the left
and top sides, and a scroll bar on the right side. Moreover, the page
is rendered with a shadow on the right and bottom sides.

Moreover, when tool bar is visible, switching to full screen should
hide it. This was previous behaviour, if I remember correctly, and
the new behaviour is not better.

I guess you're looking for the Presentation mode (F5)?
In full screen mode (F11) most programs keep menu and scroll bars
visible (try with gnome-terminal or epiphany for instance) so Evince's
behaviour is actually consistent...

Cheers,

Denis

I’m getting this with xmonad as well, probably because I set the Window

Actually I was wrong. It does not work as well with xmonad. Sorry about
that.

And do the settings work when using XMonad?

Some of these settings seem to be activated in the gnomeconfig of
xmonad (without extra configuration). For instance,
 - window selection follows the mouse,
 - the movement key is set to mod.
I actually thought this was inherited from gnome settings but apparently
not.
In bluetile, the window selection can be configured
(focus_follows_mouse: true) but the movement key cannot as far as I can
tell (probably because there is no mouse bindings so far).

So maybe this report should be classified as an enhancement request for
mouse bindings...

the xmonad (or bluetile) settings are independent of any GNOME
configuration. If gnome-window-properties fails to start, then this is
 actually a feature :-)

I’m not exactly sure what you mean with movement keys. Do you mean the
key that you have to press so that clicking, holding and moving the
mouse will move the window? Did you try with the key you specified as
the default_modifier (Windows key by default)?

Well, movement key might not be the appropriate term... What I mean is
(from xmonad's manual):
   mod-button1
Set the window to floating mode and move by dragging

In bluetile, mod-{anybutton} does not do anything.

looking at the bluetile code, this should work for windows that are
already floating. So you probably have to make it floating first using
 this key:
 key_treat_as_dialog_window: DefaultMod+Shift+t

You're right. It works fine once the window is defined as dialog.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant.

That's because we use the information in the report body, where
package A is mentioned. We will fix it when we'll move to SOAP bts
 querying.

Ok, thanks for the information!

Bug#533138: path from upstream fixing image scaling

2010-07-30 Thread Denis Laxalde
tags 533138 +patch +upstream
thanks

Dear poppler maintainers,

This bug seems to be fixed in 0.14. However, there is a patch attached
to the upstream bug [1] which I tried and adapted to 0.12.4. It works
fine and solve this scaling issue which makes some PDF files (from
scientific publishers in particular) barely readable.
Could you consider including it in Debian if upgrading to 0.14 is not
planned before squeeze?

Cheers,

Denis

I'm not convinced that these are the same bug. Let's see what the

There was no response so far and, since boot failures still happen from

In fact, there are even worse than before since I cannot recover using
SysRq keys combination anymore (I just power-off the computer now).
Hence, I cannot save a relevant dmesg anymore.
Is there any way to recover messages in such situations?

Cheers,

Denis

Bug#586340: libelmersolver-5.5.0: should depend on mumps

2010-06-18 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: libelmersolver-5.5.0
Version: 5.5.0.svn.4458.dfsg-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

MUMPS appears in Elmer solvers list. However, since there is no
dependencies upon mumps libraries in elmer packages, Elmer cannot use
mumps.
Maybe some recommend or suggest to libmumps-ptscotch could be added?

Cheers,

Denis

Bug#586115: libgnomekbd4: layout switch using a key only works once

2010-06-16 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: libgnomekbd4
Version: 2.30.1-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

When you have more than one keyboard layout, it is useful to assign a
key to switch between selected layouts (keyboard preferences layouts
options key(s) to change layout). Unfortunately, pressing the selected
key (or keys combination) only changes the layout once (from the first
to the second). Then the user has no other choice but to click on the
keyboard indicator in the notification area to select another layout.
As far as I can tell this behaviour/bug is not new.

Cheers,

Bug#580414: epiphany-extensions: [rss] feeds URI are wrong for some websites

2010-05-05 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: epiphany-extensions
Version: 2.30.0-4
Severity: important

Hi,

Epiphany extracts wrong feeds URI for some websites.
For example, with
http://www.debian.org/
you'll get
security/dsa-long instead of http://www.debian.org/security/dsa-long
with
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
you'll get
/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChangesfeed=atom instead of
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChangesfeed=atom
and with
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian
you'll get
/w/index.php?title=Debianaction=edit (which is not a feed AFAICT)
Obviously this results in import failures in the news reader (liferea
for instance).
For some websites it works fine, e.g.:
http://lwn.net/

Denis

OK, so we can be fairly sure this is a kernel bug. Please report this
at https://bugzilla.kernel.org. It is hard to know where the bug
may be, but try submitting it under product 'Memory Management',

Please let me know if you need more info.

I don't think this has anything to do with the fuse module itself
since the 'oops' occurs while loading it. There seems to have been
some earlier memory corruption. Please try adding 'blacklist radeon'
to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. If that doesn't make any difference,
 test the system's RAM with e.g. memtest86+.

Actually, this failure happened sporadically and has not occured for a
week now (despite a daily shutdown) so it might be hard to investigate.

I also noticed an constant error related to radeon very early in the
boot. AFAICT, nothing is recorded in any log. Is there any way to find
more info about this ?

Bug#576855: atlas: should conflict with libblas3gf(1.2-6) and liblapack3gf(3.2.1-5)

2010-04-07 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: atlas
Version: 3.8.3-19
Severity: normal

Hi,

First of all, thank you very much for your work with atlas packages !

It seems that the alternative mechanism fails when old libblas3gf(1.2-4)
and liblapack3gf(3.2.1-2) are installed (e.g. /usr/lib/liblapack.so.3gf
still points to liblapack.so.3gf.0 in /usr/lib despite
libatlas3gf-*(3.8.3.19) is installed).
I would hence suggest that conflicts (or some equivalent procedure) with
these old versions of libblas and liblapack be added in order to make
the transition easier.

Cheers,

Denis

 i've found a work-around at

 to summarise:

 1. apt-get install pessulus

I think here's no need to install pessulus to achieve that.
Simply setting the gconf key /apps/panel/global/locked_down to true

From the command line:

Try to rename a bookmark from the side panel of nautilus:
 1. the name is not updated immediately in the side panel (it is in nautilus'
Bookmarks menu). Nautilus has to be closed and reopened for the
change to appear.
 2. the name is not update in the Places/Bookmarks menu (of Gnome panel)
 3. quitting (with --quit) and restarting nautilus, the old name is back

However, bookmarks rename works fine from the Eookmarks/Edit bookmarks menu of

Package: claws-mail
Version: 3.7.5-1

I have an IMAP account for which Claws-mail don't download message
bodies when they are quite small (typically a few KB).
This seems to be related to whether there is or no a filter on the
inbox.
Typically, I have a custom spam filter (based on a header from my
provider) and when it is NOT activated, Claws-mail succesfully download
messages bodies (whatever their size).
I then have to choose between seeing spam or not being able to read small
e-mail...

Please let me know if you need more information.

The upstream report finally lead to a solution. It seems that nvidia

A simple workaround is then to rebuild the kernel with this option

Why did you change the severity ? it's still a feature request

It's been over three years since this feature was requested, and it's
 still not been implemented.
Actually, such features have very little chances to be implemented on
the distribution side.
Please ask and contribute upstream.

The whole point of having a trash is so
that you can store discarded messages there for some period of time
before really deleting them. If you cannot delete only some messages
from the trash, the only options are (1) to let the trash grow
indefinitely or (2) periodically delete messages that have just been
discarded, defeating the purpose of having the trash in the first
 place.

By the way, what you're requesting might not be possible because of the
way trash is handled (i.e. virtual folder).
See this bug for example :
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224442

(Hence, I changed back the severity, forwarded and tag...)

yes which version of 2.6.32 are you using?

if it is not 2.6.32-8 from unstable please test against that.
 thanks for the feedback.

It was with package linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686 (on which
linux-image-2.6-686 still depends).
I just tried with linux-image-2.6.32-2-686 (i.e. 2.6.32-8) and display
switch does not work as expected either...

I don't have this issue with Epiphany, and webkit 1.1.19. Can you refer
me to a link of a PDF that is failing to download/open for you? Also, do
 you have any plugins installed?

I searched for a random PDF in google:

   http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf

Clicking this link initiates a download in Epiphany, here.

This seems to be due to mozplugger, which is suggested by epiphany.
Uninstalling it solves the problem for both browsers...

I also read #566857 and others in the meantime.
I wonder if these bugs were not closed by mistake when you closed
#566867, the duplicate of #566866, whereas it had already been merged
with #566857.

Bug#558126: epiphany-browser - password form saving is inoperable

2010-01-28 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

It seems that epiphany stores password with reference to the page that
is currently visited when the user authenticates and not w.r.t. the main
url. This may explain why it something asks to store passwords again and
again...

Consider for example a wiki, if you authenticate when visiting a subpage
http://wiki.d.o/SomePage epiphany will store credentials for the
following host: http://wiki.d.o/SomePage?form%5Fusername=nameform%
5Fpassword=password

Next time if you authenticate on an other page
http://wiki.d.o/SomeOtherPage, epiphany will store an other entry for
the following host: http://wiki.d.o/SomeOtherPage?form%
5Fusername=nameform%5Fpassword=password

Bug#567348: vim-latexsuite: sometimes open package files after a compilation error

2010-01-28 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: vim-latexsuite
Version: 20091230-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

Consider the attached minimal tex example, which contains an error
(equation environment is closed by equation*).
If you try to compile it (latex), latex-suite will open the package
file pst-math.tex in place of the main tex file (test.tex).
This seems to happen when packages contains some .tex files (such as
pstricks-add here).
I guess this might be due to some misinterpretation of the log file
(attached as well).

Cheers,

Denis

Bug#565760: aptitude: wants to remove packages recommended by a package marked as hold

2010-01-26 Thread Denis Laxalde
Hi,

This may not be related to this bug but aptitude's resolver behaves
quite strangely these days...

I have an upgradable package with one of its dependencies being
unavailable. Instead of suggesting to keep the package, the resolver
first suggests to remove it ('keep' is only suggested after). This
package was installed by recommends (and is marked as automatically
installed).

Bug#566185: vim-latexsuite: sometimes freezes gvim after compilation

2010-01-21 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: vim-latexsuite
Version: 20091230-2
Severity: important

Hi,

Sometimes after a compilation (using \ll), gvim gets completely frozen.
I found no other way to recover than just killing the gvim process
(which takes 100% CPU).
Actually, it seems that the compilation (just latex and bibtex
sometimes) goes through but that vim does not recover after this...

I'll be glad to provide more information if you explain me how to debug
this (next time it happens) !

Cheers,

Denis

 Package: evolution

Evolution cannot open .ics files with multiple iCalendar objects, as
 specified by RFC 5545: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5545#section-3.4

The Calendaring and Scheduling Core Object is a collection of
calendaring and scheduling information. Typically, this information
will consist of an iCalendar stream with a single iCalendar object.
However, multiple iCalendar objects can be sequentially grouped
together in an iCalendar stream. The first line and last line of the
iCalendar object MUST contain a pair of iCalendar object delimiter
strings. The syntax for an iCalendar stream is as follows:

icalstream = 1*icalobject

icalobject = BEGIN : VCALENDAR CRLF
 icalbody
 END : VCALENDAR CRLF

A testcase is attached. To reproduce the bug, click on New Calendar,
choose Type On This Computer, choose a name, select Customize
options, select the file name. The terminal from which Evolution
 has been started shows:

(evolution:11172): calendar-gui-WARNING **: Unable to load the calendar
 Unknown error

A major consequence is that it is not possible to use Evolution with
calendars currently generated under Maemo 6.

I think this has been reported upstream already, hence forwarding.
Please follow-up there.

Thanks,

Denis

Not a bad idea. Does that work for you?
Yes, it does.

Actually, a better solution would be to by-pass this shell script and
include its content directly in the menu file as:
  Exec=sh -c 'R_DEFAULT_PACKAGES=$R_DEFAULT_PACKAGES Rcmdr R $@'

This works too on my system.

All this is, as far as I know, only in Rcmdr as someone will invariably have
suggested it to John Fox who almost surely said 'why not' and included it. He
 is primarily a Windows user.

Including this upstream would be better, I agree.

Cheers,

Denis

Bug#565760: aptitude: wants to remove packages recommended by a package marked as hold

2010-01-18 Thread Denis Laxalde
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.1.3-3
Severity: normal

For some reasons, I often hold some packages before upgrades. Then
aptitude detects dependencies and suggests to hold them as well but
finally wants to remove recommended packages, which I don't want to !

This happens for example with grub-pc:
 - I hold grub-pc
 - aptitude warns me about grub-common and suggests to hold it as well
   (I accept)
 - then, proceeding ('g'), aptitude wants to remove os-prober which is
recommended by grub-common and marked as automatically installed

Note that os-prober is not upgradable in this case.

Cheers,

Denis
