Bug#879102: linux-image-4.9.0-4-686-pae: SCSI timeouts on Dell PowerEdge 2650 with Perc RAID 3/Di (unable to boot)

2017-10-19 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.51-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

On upgrade from Jessie to Etch, the kernel went from 3.16
(3.16.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae currently running) to 4.9 (tested 4.9.0-3-686-pae and
4.9.0-4-686-pae without more success).

When booting from 4.9, the kernel goes into an endless loop, complaining about
SCSI abort/timeouts and never actually reaches a usable state.
Rebooting back to the older 3.16 kernel does not show the same issue.

I believe there has been some kernel timeout default changes in the kernel
upstream.

Please help.
Thanks.

Bug#697856: fcgiwrap: Various minor initscript improvements

2013-01-10 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: fcgiwrap
Version: 1.0-1+squeeze1
Severity: minor

Please find attached a patch to the initscript for the following issues:
1) PID files under /var/run/ all use the .pid file extension, not .pids on
Debian systems
2) DAEMONUID and DAEMONGID are actually not used, and getent is used 3 times,
so lessen their performance impact
an even better solution would be to replace it all with something like the
following lines altogether:
 cut here
DAEMONUGID=$(getent passwd $DAEMONUSER | cut -f 3,4 -d:) || true
if [ -z $DAEMONUGID ]; then
log_failure_msg The user \$DAEMONUSER\, required to run $NAME, does not
exist.
exit 1
fi
 cut here
3) a missing comma, not necessary if using the proposed snippet in 2)

Bug#679897: /var/lib/munin/plugin-state/ should be writable by munin group

2012-07-02 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: munin
Version: 2.0.0-1~bpo60+1
Severity: normal

/var/lib/munin/plugin-state/ is not writable by its group, munin.
This at least makes the exim_mailstats plugin fail with the following message
(when run from munin-run):
exim_mailstats: Could not open statefile
'/var/lib/munin/plugin-state/exim_mailstats-' for writing: Permission denied

Other plugins are affected as well.
This could be easily fixed.

Bug#667730: mysql-server-5.1: postinst takes ages to complete on servers with many databases

2012-04-06 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: mysql-server-5.1
Version: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1
Severity: normal

On a powerful server with many databases (around 15k), postinst takes ages
(dozens of minutes) to complete on upgrade (security), because of the blind
chown and chmod -R on /var/lib/mysql.
This is not necessary, at least on upgrades and it introduces downtime in
effect. Maybe conditioning the chown and chmod to a find on permissions would
lessen the impact, without sacrificing the feature alltogether.

Bug#395565: denyhosts: please support Dropbear as an alternative to openssh-server

I have spoken with Phil Schwartz, the upstream maintainer, in attempt to
introduce some more transparency and agility in the development process.
It appears that the next release of denyhosts has been held up by a few
technical issues which I am hoping to help resolve. While I would not
blame you for using fail2ban, I did want to inform you that denyhosts
should be seeing some activity in the near future.

Good to know.

As for this particular bug, the current issue is simply that Dropbear
does not use TCP Wrapper as OpenSSH does. This means that denyhost's
current method of using /etc/hosts.deny would not work for Dropbear. I
believe this is enough reason to tag this bug wontfix, but because it is
an upstream bug, I will let Phil make the final call.

Allright, I clearly didn't look so far.
Feel free to tag it as wontfix.

And thanks for caring.

Bug#613792: logrotate: Should allow to disable config snippets in .d

2011-02-17 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: logrotate
Version: 3.7.8-6
Severity: wishlist

On Debian, some packages providing configuration include directory allow for
easily disabling.
E.g.: /etc/cron.d/ - if a file has a . (dot) anywhere in the name, it is not
taken into account, so adding a .old or .date something gets it disabled
Other e.g.: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ - any file not ending in .list is
ignored, so adding a .disabled gets it disabled.

Currently, any file in /etc/logrotate.d/ is interpreted.
It would be great if logrotate had a similar mechanism as described.

Thanks

I was a bit silent about that but of course it helps, thank for all
 this work ;-)

By the way, I added a patch that fixes a segfault while using IPv6 UDP
queries, hence releasing a -3 version:

So, I guess you did take my changes into account?

I'm considering going to PowerDNS when actually in production though, so
might no longer be interested in these packages.
On the other side, I still plan to run it on Nexenta
(http://www.nexenta.org), but so far it (as does upstream) fails building
there.

 http://edony.tuxfamily.org/~grad/mydns/

Patch added to upstream[1] but no answer yet. Waiting for 1.2.8.28 to
 remove the patch ;)

Bug#596704: cifs: Files duplicated in directory listing

2010-09-13 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686
Version: 2.6.26-25

Server: Nexenta Core Platform 3.0 (~OpenSolaris b134).
Client: Debian Lenny (5.0.6) GNU/Linux running kernel 2.6.26-2-686 (2.6.26-25)
with cifs.ko version 1.53.

The mount options used are (I stripped authentication info):
rw,username=userX,password=passwordX,uid=userX,gid=groupY,dir_mode=0775,file_mode=0774

The problem I notice is that on the client, files appear multiple times in
directory as soon as they are more than 127 actual files in the directory (and
it is reproducible at will). At 127 files, each one is shown 2x (twice), up to
128x in directories with more that a few thousands files.
Their inodes are identical (as shows ls -li). Listing the directory gets
slower and slower with the number of files (and duplicates) in it.
On the server, everything is fine though.
Shell globbing is getting the duplicates.

I tried with kernel 2.6.32 (which has a newer cifs.ko) from
backports.debian.org, and the problem is not present (fixed?).

In the past, it was possible to download the sources for latest cifs.ko
separately, and apply it to an older kernel, but it no longer seems possible
(or I did not found latest sources).

I already reported it upstream: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7676

On any other locale than fr_FR, thesaurus is not found in OpenOffice.org.
It has been fixed for fr_FR recently, but fr_BE, fr_LU, and more are left over.
The following tiny patch fixes this for other OOo locales impacted.

And why on earth is this a grave bug? Correct, it is not.
How on earth does it make unusable? Does it work in fr_FR? Yes, it does.

Of course it is, as it makes it completely useless (not accessible at
all) for the many people running OOo in French, but not fr_FR (Belgium,
Luxembourg, Monaco, Switzerland, Canada).
While the source package might not be as a whole,
openoffice.org-thesaurus-fr is not working at all for those people.

 True. Didn't deny that.

While the source package might not be as a whole,
openoffice.org-thesaurus-fr is not working at all for those people.

for those people. Not for all. The package is not unusable for fr_FR
 people.

Don't misunderstand me, I see the need to register it for all of them too
(that's why I actually did it already) but grave imho is a too high
severity. The highest you can argue for imho is important:

 important
a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without
rendering it completely unusable to everyone.

 compared to

 grave
makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or causes data loss,
or introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users who
 use the package.

This is getting off-topic, but I used reportbug to report it and it said:
2 grave makes the package in question unusable by most or all
users, or causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing
access to the accounts of users who use the package.

You see my point?

Anyway, I don't care personally, as I'm able to fix the problem for my
customers, but I wanted to report it to ensure it being fixed some day,
and even get to Ubuntu someday.

2010-01-19 Thread Jerome Warnier
I personally feel that:
- 216434 files created for exactly one month of activity is unreasonable
- closing a bug with such a simplistic answer and without even giving
the opportunity to the submitter to argument is just unfair

That being said, the lastlog option is exactly what is needed to
circumvent the purpose of my bug, so thanks a lot for pointing me to it.

 Hi Jerome,
please see the 'lastlog' configuration option in your sarg.conf. It should
resolve your issue with reports in /var/www. If the number of files in
reports you need to keep exceeds the limit of your filesystem I suggest you
prepare a filesystem with an higher number of inodes. See the man file for
the specific filesystem tool for directions.

On several of my servers, durep is taking GB of disk space by itself in

Understand me: I'm taking about data generated by durep itself, not files and

I would expect some automatic cleaning from /etc/cron.daily/durep, with

Bug#378454: swat: not usable when root account is disabled (pure sudo system)

2009-01-15 Thread Jerome Warnier
Actually, there is another solution: SWAT manages permissions using PAM,
and using rights on /etc/samba/smb.conf.
So the solution is just to allow you user(s) to write to
/etc/samba/smb.conf.

Example:
adduser myuser adm
chgrp adm /etc/samba/smb.conf
chmod g+w /etc/samba/smb.conf

Hope it helps

2.6.23, and newer releases of 2.6.24 do not fix the problem.

 try out 2.6.25,
 see apt lines wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel

 The good news:
 - it boots with card plugged at power on
 - it works with linux-image-2.6.25-trunk-686
 (2.6.25-1~experimental.1~snapshot.11165) if plugged later on.

Bad news: it does not work when plugged at boot, you have to unplug it
and plug it back to make it work (but nothing else). But I can bear
 this.

Does the latter error (the need to unplug/plug) still occur with more recent
 kernel versions?

I tried with the latest 2.6.26 and 2.6.27 in Sid, and yes, this is still
present.
 Cheers,

Bug#505107: [SPAM] udev: e100 does not work in Compaq ML350 G2

2008-11-09 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: udev
Version: 0.125-7
Severity: important

Driver e100 does not work for default NIC in Compaq ML350 G2 while
eepro100 does.
Sadly, eepro100 is blacklisted in udev, which renders network unusable.
Commenting the blacklist (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) for eepro100 and
adding eepro100 to /etc/modules fixes the problem.

Please do not hesitate to request more information about this problem.
I'm not sure I should not have registered this bug againt kernel package
instead.

Thanks for the clarification. If this is really the case, then it will be
impossible to adjust the dependencies of webcalendar such that it will
prevent the users from using it with a PG 7.x server.

I think the sensible thing to do is to add a mention to the problem in the
README file. Is this okay with you?

Well, you could perhaps (depending on your contacts with the development
team of WebCalendar) submit a version of the upgrade script which works
with 7.4 (or, alternatively, just in the Debian package).

Bug#500382: webcalendar: Does not work with PostgreSQL 7.4

Package: webcalendar

experimental package on Etch.
Sadly, the package gets upgraded, but not the DB.
Trying to upgrade the DB manually with the script

This is just a request to tighten dependencies to a specific minimal
version of PostgreSQL, or at least adding something in the README.

Thanks for your bug report. I do remember having tested webcalendar with
PostgreSQL 7.x with database upgrade, so I take your word as true.
WebCalendar does not depend directly on PostgreSQL, but through php*-pgsql,
so it will be tricky to achieve this. BTW, there is something I do not
 understand in your setup:

Versions of packages webcalendar depends on:
 [snip]
 ii php4-pgsql 6:4.4.4-8+etch6 PostgreSQL module for php4
 [snip]
 ii php5-pgsql 5.2.0-8+etch11 PostgreSQL module for php5

 According to packages.d.o [1] [2], the versions above depend on libpq4 =
8.1.4. How does it comes that you are using WebCalendar with PostgreSQL
7.4? Which version of php*-pgsql are you using?

Etch ships with both PostgreSQL 7.4 and 8.1.
We started running Sarge and developed in-house some other applications
using PHP (4.x) and PostgreSQL (7.x at that time). Then, we upgraded to
Etch, and installed WebCalendar (on Apache 1.x + PHP 4.x).
And some time ago, we went to PHP5.

Finally, we decided to upgrade our WebCalendar.

Debian also rules because of its clean upgrade path.

To answer to your question strictly speaking, as Etch ships with both
versions of PG and newest clients are backward-compatible with older
servers, the PHP module was built with the 8.1 client but allows to
connect to 7.4.

This bug occurs because the script is not safe to be run with /bin/sh

This bug should be in fact renamed to: Initscript not compatible with

To fix this on your computer, change the shebang line to:

Then, upgrade to the new version and when dpkg asks to overwrite the

Bug#478042: linux-image-2.6.24-1-686: Cisco Aironet does not work anymore

2008-04-26 Thread Jerome Warnier
I'm using a Cisco PCM350 on an IBM T23 laptop for years on Debian Sid.
Up until 2.6.23, this wifi card was working perfectly, but since 2.6.24,
Linux does no longer boot when plugged at power on, and the card is not
working anyway even if plugged sometime after the boot finished.
The various 2.6.24 kernel packages did not improve this.

Bug#459894: Noticed it also

2008-01-15 Thread Jerome Warnier

I could also notice it (on Etch) when trying to replace vsftpd with proftpd.

Interestingly, the scripts in /etc/rc*.d stay there after removal. Maybe
it is stopped while removing, but started again at next reboot?

Hope it helps.

The best is probably just not to depend on a versioned scrollkeeper, as
rarian-compat already provides scrollkeeper.

Bug#324708: chkrootkit: Move /etc/chkrootkit.conf under /etc/package/

2007-12-07 Thread Jerome Warnier
Debian policy is quite clear on the subject:
10.7.2 Location
Any configuration files created or used by your package must reside
in /etc. If there are several, consider creating a subdirectory of /etc
named after your package.

If your package creates or uses configuration files outside of /etc, and
it is not feasible to modify the package to use /etc directly, put the
files in /etc and create symbolic links to those files from the location
that the package requires.

See http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-config-files

If I felt my /etc was full of files, I would not submit a bug against a
package which has only one file in it.
I would close this bug or tag is a wontfix.

So I think it is related to libc6-i686 (NPTL or something else).

I guess that FHS would say that the sensible places to put them in are:
/usr/lib/bmpx/
/usr/bin

Anyway, those bmpx binaries are almost the only non-libraries present on

 Hello,

There was a problem while autobuilding your package with
 DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip.
 Final binaries are still stripped.

If you call dh_strip correctly in debian/rules, this may mean that upstream
 is stripping anyway.

You are right: upstream's Makefile is stripping anyway.
I will try to fix it soon.
Would you sponsor me for that upload?

Bug#419874: Patch

2007-06-14 Thread Jerome Warnier
tags 419874 + patch
thanks

Please, when submitting patches, try to use diff -urn original_file
patched_file so that the patch is easier to apply and check.

BTW, it seems that amavis-stats itself is now obsolete, and the tool
replacing it is parselog (see #308951).
This bug probably needs to be fixed anyway, until this package is
removed from Debian.

 Hi,

About a year ago, you reported (or replied to) a bug in the Debian BTS
regarding a crash of the X server when switching to console at gnome
session opening. Did any of you guys reproduce this problem recently?
With Xorg/Etch? With latest xserver-xorg-core and drivers? If not, I
will close this bug in the next weeks.

Etch still shows the same problem on an IBM T23.
I upgraded to Sid lately, but did not test if the problem is still present.
I can test it tonight and report it if you request me to.
 Thanks,

 Yes, that would be nice.
It was previously fully reproducible.
Now, I tried multiple times without any success to reproduce on
up-to-date Sid, with a 2.6.18-4-686 then 2.6.21-1-686 kernel.

It works now, man!

Bug#289436: mount: Still present in Etch

2007-05-17 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: mount
Version: 2.12r-19
Followup-For: Bug #289436

The bug is still present in Etch.
To give more details, the manpage reads this in DESCRIPTION:
Version 2 is the default protocol version for the nfs file system type
when nfsvers= is not specified on the mount command.

While the truth is that it depends upon the (Linux) kernel you are running,
which defaults to NFS v3 in Debian's 2.6 kernels.

Hope this definitely helps and it will no longer be present in Lenny.

Thanks

Yes, it is from kfreebsd-i386, I know it.
The problem is that their reportbug is pointing to the standard BTS

Bug#407510: acpi-support: Please do not require bash in scripts where any other POSIX-compliant shell would do

2007-01-19 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: acpi-support
Version: 0.90-2
Severity: wishlist

Many scripts in /etc/acpi/ have #!/bin/bash as shebang, while #!/bin/sh
would do without any problem.
Bash is quite huge compared to eg. dash, and less and less people are probably
going to use it in a near future, at least to run scripts.

Thanks

Could you please send me a core dump of such a crash? Be aware that such
core dump may include data from your projects, so you may not want to
have them published in the web if there's some sensitive data on them.
The core dump does not show anything useful (I discussed about this with
upstream, using bug-buddy, upstream bug #382835) because the debugging
symbols are not set in the Debian package (and there is no -dbg
package). If you could tell me how to activate the debugging symbols (I
know debian packaging quite well, so it's probably enough to just tell
me what to change in debian/rules and rebuild the package).

But I understood something more: it happens only when my computer is
idle. Understand: I work on one computer while my laptop is running
gnotime, but no X activity occurs. When I work from my laptop, even if
never setting the focus to gnotime, it seems to never crash.

Hope it helps.

 Thank you.

   I can't reproduce this on version 1.9.35 either - and I specifically
   tried getting wodim - therefore I don't believe it's a general problem.
I suspect that the problem you're seeing might be in the mirror server
or in apt-proxy's interactions with that particular server. Which
mirror are you using and which protocol?

  The backend used is:
  ftp://ftp.belnet.be/debian

And I can still reproduce it.

So can I now. It appears that this bug is not dependent on the server,
but on the protocol/scheme used. I think you can avoid the problem by
using http://ftp.belnet.be/debian instead. What appears to be happening
is that apt is escaping '~' to '%7e', following an old RFC that says '~'
is not a safe character in URIs, and the FTP backend of apt-proxy is
failing to convert this back to '~'. I'll investigate further and see
if I can fix it properly.
Yes, you are right; http works nicely. As this mirror also offers http,
I will use this.
This is still a bug (whoever it belongs to, I don't know) with FTP.
Perhaps the bug title should say that (on FTP backend).

 Ben.
