Bug#1028574: Please remove joehe...@gmail.com as an uploader

2023-01-12 Thread Joe Healy
Package: salt
Version: 3004.1+dfsg-2.2

As I no longer use Salt or have regular access to a debian system, I am
unable to continue as an uploader/maintainer for the salt packages. This
has been the case for some time and is unlikely to change.

As such, please remove me from the uploaders for the package.

I wish you all the best for the future.

Thanks and Regards,

Joe

That would be great.

I'm not sure on the logistics of this - in theory there is the debian salt
team, but that has been very quiet for a long time.

What would we have to do to add you as co-maintainer or similar?

Those changes all look good.

I understand the rationale for removing the "Debian Source Package" from
the reproducible builds patch, but what are your thoughts on continuing to
report the package version in the versions report? Ie including the "Debian
Source Package" reporting in its own patch?

Although it is less useful for "pure" debian machines, it is very helpful
in dealing with issues when people think they are running from
source/packages or have installed packages from the wrong os/release.

Sounds good - I was never aware of the wrap and sort tool. Looks useful.

At least some of it is needed for salt-cloud. The bootstrap
script [1] is copied to the remote host and run to install
salt. The others are outdated and are probably closer to examples
of alternatives to the bootstrap.

I could move some of them to an examples directory in salt-doc,
make them executable or remove most of them and still just have
the bootstrap script.

None of those solutions are particularly satisfying - which is
why the lintian issues are still there. Any guidance would be
most appreciated.

 Hi,

when booting with systemd, the service module is provided by
salt/modules/systemd.py, which only considers native systemd units in
its get_all function, not services provided by init scripts. This
 breaks the service state.

Bug#770909: salt: Crash when unicode characters appear in file or command output

2014-11-24 Thread Joe Healy
Package: salt
Version: 2014.1.13+ds-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When a unicode character appears in the output of a command or a diff of a
file, then salt command crashes

   * What led up to the situation?
Changing a file with a unicode character on the same line or running a command
with some non ascii output

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

It should not crash because of non ascii output.

There are a number of upstream bugs regarding this:

https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/16651
https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/16713
https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/18053

The fix for these is equivalent and is done by ensuring that the output can be
converted to ascii (either by trying multiple encodings or using python's repr
function)

Additionally, I'm not rushing to upload 2014.7 yet - it took 2014.1 about 9

I understand your concern and frustration with the removal of the feature.

Given there is an easy way to add pyobjects in when required [1], I would
rather minimise the differences between upstream and the debian packages on
this issue.

The single file approach in _renderers is less obtrusive and means that any
side effects due to including pyobject can be isolated.

Thanks for the report.

Bug#742653: [Pkg-salt-team] Bug#742653: salt-ssh search for a ssh_user key

2014-03-25 Thread Joe Healy
Looks like this is an upstream bug.

I'm passing it upstream with some additional comments.

https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/11525

I think if you add:

ssh_user: root

to your /etc/salt/master config file, then it will work. You may also need
some similar options.

Thanks,

Joe

Will do.

You do not ship the source for

Agreed. Is it acceptable to add the source in via a quilt patch then
build the minified version? or is there a better approach?

This package embeds jQuery, which is suboptimal as jQuery is packaged in
Debian. Regardless, it must be mentioned in debian/copyright.

My understanding is that there are two approaches I could use here. I
could rebuild the upstream .tar.gz without jQuery (and the others) or
I could depend on the debian jQuery and patch the documentation to use
the debian jQuery.

If I do the second, we would still ship a (unused) version of jQuery
in the orig.tar.gz, however, it would not be present in the .deb. As
such, it should still be mentioned in the debian/copyright. Is this
correct?

I'm not thrilled by either option (upstream not including it/them
would be best), but am leaning towards not modifying the orig.tar.gz
as at this stage, I believe the contentious files are all (able to be)
DFSG compliant.

Thanks for your assistance.

Bug#722446: salt-minion: Salt minion unable to update salt

2013-09-11 Thread Joe Healy
Package: salt-minion
Version: 0.16.3-1
Severity: normal

Since I refactored the init script for salt-minion to ensure that all
processes were killed off, salt is no longer able to upgrade itself.

Running:

salt '*' pkg.install salt-minion

will result in the minion (and the dpkg) process being killed part
way through the upgrade and requiring manual interverntion.

a work around is to run ensure at is installed and that salt has
detected at:

salt 'MINION' at.atq

(this should return something about jobs rather than being
unavailable)

salt 'MINION' at.at now + 1 minute' apt-get install -y salt-minion

Reverting the change from

0.16.1-1 [70573cb] Ensure all minion processes are killed when
stopping/restarting

has been tested to fix the problem.

The upstream issue is https://github.com/saltstack/salt/issues/7151

I'll be preparing a new package and uploading.

Isn't this a fundamental problem in Salt, which should be fixed
there? I don't think that using at(1) for this is really a solution,
but a gross hack, which still requires the admin to know what's
going on and to wait up to 1:59 minutes.

I agree using at (and this) is a hack.

The principle I was working off when doing the original update of the
init.d script was that /etc/init.d/salt-minion stop should stop the
minion and all child processes. I still think this is the right thing.

Doing this has ended up in a situation where it is difficult to
upgrade the minion without manually going around to each one.

I agree with the point about it being fixed in salt. I think they
should probably handle signals differently when they are updating
packages (maybe even a special case for salt itself).

In the end I decided that it was best to relax the killing all
processes until this can be resolved properly. Ending up in a
situation where each minion needs dpkg --configure -a apt-get -f
install to be run manually after someone seemed to be the worst
situation possible.

I'm yet to file a bug upstream, but will do so.

In the mean time, I have already uploaded a package with the change
reverted. I believe it would be possible for me to either stop that
package (possibly dcut).

If you have any advice, it would be much appreciated.

Bug#715249: [Pkg-salt-team] Bug#715249: [PATCH] use dh-systemd

2013-07-07 Thread Joe Healy
Thanks Michael,

I'll include this on the next upload. We've just missed the last one.

We are looking to backport salt to squeeze and wheezy, is there
anything we need to consider or do we just remove the build dependency
on dh-systemd?

Cheers,

Joe

Bug#712819: [Pkg-salt-team] Bug#712819: salt-call returns incorrect exit status (ie. succeeds and returns 2)

 Dear Maintainer,
 * What led up to the situation?

I was using salt-minion from the salt PPA which is version 0.15.3, and
everything was fine. I then tried instead to use the 0.15.1 version
from the debian archive (well, a copy of the debian package) - it worked
but the command I was using (salt-call) returns an incorrect exit status.

Thanks for reporting this Michael, you are right, it is fixed in
upstream. We have this version (0.15.3) ready for upload at alioth,
but our sponsors have been very busy/quiet lately.

Hopefully they will find time to upload either this release shortly or
the 0.16 release which should be due soonish.

FYI - the salt PPA packages are either backported from the uploaded
debian packages or the version in git at alioth if our sponsors have
not uploaded them.

Thanks,

Joe

Bug#703600: salt: Fix check for systemd

2013-04-29 Thread Joe Healy
Looks like upstream have accepted your patch.

https://github.com/saltstack/salt/commit/404b769d25ee5158398c46cc62ff9ce4ab85f06c

Do I close this one now or when the next release is made?

Thanks,

Joe

Bug#698898: [Pkg-salt-team] Bug#698898: Bug#698898: certificate file locations

2013-04-10 Thread Joe Healy
Having thought about it for awhile, I think a feasible design is
coming together:

We change via quilt the default config file location. This will deal
with new installations.

To deal with existing installations, we write a script which does the
following in postinst:

We read the /etc/salt/master or /etc/salt/minion config file respectively.

if the pki_dir variable is unchanged (ie equal to
/etc/salt/pki/{master,minion}) or unset then we modify the variable to
/var/lib/salt/{master,minion}/pki and uncomment it if necessary.

If the pki_dir variable is changed from the default then we exit and do nothing.

If we decided to make changes, then we move all the files to
the new location.

obviously all changes must be either made or rolled back.

We don't actually need to change the default location via quilt as the
postinst script will change it. But it is probably more obvious for
newcomers and others to have the patch there. Downside is the work is
done in two places - but, in time we could probably delete the script
once we were confident there were not any very early versions out
there...

The other thing that feels a little odd is running a search and
replace on a users config file, but anything else seems worse.

What are your thoughts? I'm not going to have time to implement
anything till after Monday, but the plan seems to be settling.

Cheers,

Joe

If you need help, well... we can do it together.

I think there are 2 approaches:

1) Change default config file

2) Change code to look in both locations

Obviously we could do both.

If we don't do option 2, then we need to provide some sort of
migration path for existing users.

This could be as little as notes in the changelog and a NEWS file, or
it could be a migration script as well.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Joe

Bug#703600: salt: Fix check for systemd

2013-04-08 Thread Joe Healy
Hi Martin,

I'm relatively new to this game so I just want to make sure I
understand your bug.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Salt has recently updated the way it checks for systemd.

The way salt is doing so is incorrect and the appropriate way to do so
is in the patch.

This patch is not debian specific, but should be applied upstream.

You have not raised an issue upstream regarding this (I did a quick
search for systemd and found nothing relevant).

We can either apply this fix here (if it is urgent) or take it upstream.

I think it would be more appropriate to send it upstream.

If I don't hear back otherwise from you regarding this, I will send
the bug upstream.

Cheers,

Joe

Bug#698898: certificate file locations

2013-04-08 Thread Joe Healy
Hi,

Is it appropriate to set the default config to a
/var/lib/salt/{master,minion}/pki location?

If so, I guess this would be done via a quilt patch.

People who are using package managed versions would need to be
notified, but the number of those should be small at this stage.

Thanks,

Joe

I have added output from lsmod and hdparm below.

Not sure what other information I can provide.

Thanks and hope we can sort it out.
