I don't know how that is configured, but you just need to add a comment
to the silence like '--comment="testing silences"'

Yes, the debian binary comes with a sane default which is not present in
upstream.

The problem is that upstream switched to Elm for generating the UI, and
that would have required preparing and uploading dozens of new packages,
and I did not have the resources for that.

Somebody offered to write a script to download the pre-compiled UI and
install it locally, but never happened.

So I checked with upstream, they decided to remove it because for them
it is already obsolete.. I will try to backport this, but it could be
tricky as the codebase has evolved since this was removed.

Bug#921351: [pkg-go] Bug#921351: prometheus-postfix-exporter: Init script missing

2019-02-07 Thread Martín Ferrari
Daniel, et al.

I was preparing a fix for this by copying some support scripts from
other exporters when I noticed a couple of things, and wanted to check
with you before making any change.

This exporter is running with user postfix, while all the others use the
prometheus user. I understand that you need to access the queue
directly, but this could be done by granting the postqueue group when
starting the process instead.

Another thing is that this requires a special log configuration
(duplicating all postfix entries to a new file, and making that file
writable by the user this exporter runs as), which probably should be
documented in a Debian readme, and I have no idea how to do this with
systemd? Also, I'd suggest moving that log to /var/{lib,log}/prometheus

Honestly, back in the day I had looked at this exporter and decided it
was not great because of the log requirement, and started using mtail
for monitoring postfix.

Ouch. More reason to hold the upgrade then.

> As a middle ground, I think I can get 0.9.0 patched for now with the
intention of uploading a new version once we are out of hot water here.
 Do you think that is reasonable?

Yesm that sounds good. In fact, I was writing an email to you telling
you that I think the fix is pretty easy: the breakage is because
genproto removed a deprecated API
(google.golang.org/genproto/googleapis/cloud/speech/v1beta1) that this
package depends on. The fix (as upstream did it) is to remove the
packages that reflect that API, and it is easy to backport.

I have already been working on this for a while. That problem is fixed,
but there are still a few discrepancies with bigtable and spanner, which
I hope to fix soon and upload. Unless you had already fixed that?

>
  I apologize if I didn’t communicate my intentions better here - I
emailed pkg-go a while back but I neglected to respond to this bug
(oversight on my part, sorry!).

No, I remember seeing that message, but being too busy with other
corners of Debian to pay much attention :)

PS: I was wrong in my previous message, there are not that many packages
depending on google-cloud. But for some reason, the autoremoval system
blames this package for a bunch of other packages to be at risk of
autoremoval. I don't understand why...

Sorry to be a killjoy, but are you sure a new version is needed to solve
this problem? We are very close to the freeze, and way too many packages
depend on this. I am working now with other breakage coming from

Yes. That must be the issue.

I thought this would not be a problem, since the timer service is using
sponge, but now I see in the manpage that:

   When possible, sponge creates or updates the output file
atomically by
   renaming a temp file into place. (This cannot be done if TMPDIR
is not
   in the same filesystem.)

So I will look into using the same dir as TMPDIR.

That's weird.. But I'd bet the error refers to another line in that
file. After all, node-exporter has no idea of sat, scsi, or megaraid. I
think that must be some text in the file. Could you send the contents of it?

bug is present, and it is at least affecting x/tools.

The golang-X.Y-src packages, which provide /usr/share/go-X.Yapi/, should

We were asked for an opinion on this matter, which we expressed about a

We think we should not get involved in the minutiae of how this is
solved, but our original recommendation still remains (quoting from our

For further clarification, this means that we believe there is time
until the freeze to solve this issue, and if it is not solved by then,
the package should be removed from testing and unstable.

I agree it would be good if these are not compressed.. But as I

Hi,

To add to this bug report, I noticed a problem with debcommit -r when
tagging a native package: it does not add the 'debian/' prefix, which
gbp buildpackage adds, and seems to be the preferred way.

Inconsistencies aside, there is no way to customise this behaviour, so
this means I should just stop using debcommit, which is a pity.

Bug#907199: Should the weboob package stay in Debian?

2018-09-25 Thread Martín Ferrari
Hi all,

I am writing on behalf of the Anti-Harassment team, as our input has
been requested on this issue.

Our understanding, after reading the mail threads and bug reports, is
that the package in its current shape is against the Debian CoC ("be
respectful") -- while it's not a "flagrant" violation,

As Gregor Herrmann eloquently[1] put it, it's "not ok to use the boobs
theme for a web scraper or other software unrelated to boobs [sic]
themselves, where its only function is to make a small group of users
giggle while objectifying, offending or boring the rest of the world."

We appreciate uploading a new version without the insults (and thank
Jonathan Dowland for his efforts[2][3] on this front). Please note that
the insults and homophobic language *is* a flagrant violation of
Debian's CoC and in our opinion, Debian should not ship new software
including them.

We believe the next release should not contain the package in question
in its current state; our recommendation would be to either work with
upstream on correcting these issues, forking and/or patching it, or just
removing the package. There is still enough time to find a solution that
respects our users and our community while keeping a useful piece of
software in the archive. We would also encourage all parties to be
respectful, and to observe the community needs for a healthy environment
where such puerile humour taken at the expense of other people is not
acceptable any more.

If this dispute cannot be resolved amicably and timely, we believe the
FTP-master team can -and should- unilaterally remove the package from
the archive. We think that invoking the CTTE or calling a GR would
unnecessarily cause more disruption and draw energy from the community.

No, I moved all that default configuration into the binary's defaults.

it is not the simplest, but in the default file you have the
documentation on how to do it, along with the current default value:

#
--collector.filesystem.ignored-mount-points="^/(dev|proc|run|sys|var/lib/docker)($|/)"
#Regexp of mount points to ignore for filesystem
#collector.

Right, but this can't be done without root, and buildds do not give root.

This discussion is about a FTBFS bug, not about the CI system. ALso,
that would not solve the issue, as it is autopkgtest installing (and
therefore starting) prometheus.

I have not seen this error before, I can only imagine you had some old

it must be some concurrency issue, but as I said, I have not been able

Yes, but this is not what is happening: the build only fails if
prometheus is already running in the machine, which is the case for
autopkgtest, but not for a normal build. I plan to fix this, but I need
to find a general fix for all go packages that include a daemon.

Look at the buildd logs, there are no failures (except i386, which is
known not to work):
https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=prometheus

If you run dpkg-buildpackage in a clean chroot, it does not fail: I have
just checked again; so this bug is not RC. There are a few other go
packages that fail autopkgtests for the exact same reason, please do not
open FTBFS bugs without actually trying to build the package.

This is a known problem when running the autopkgtests, becasue the
installed package starts the daemon and then the tests fail when trying
to use the same port; but this is not a FTBFS: the build daemons do not
fail to build from source. I think you should lower the severity.

We could also change the default in the next debhelper compat mode;
dunno how this is normally handled, but it would be good to coordinate

Bug#905152: RM: mtail [mips64el] -- ROM; Can't fix arch-specific bugs

2018-07-31 Thread Martín Ferrari
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi,

Mtail has never worked on mips64el, because inotify support is broken (still
not sure where the root problem lies). It was compiled successfully once, but
due to a mistake in debian/rules that meant not all tests were run.

I was able to work-around this for prometheus, but the code in mtail is too
complex for my limited golang abilities.

There is a bug[1] open in the fsnotify library, but the project is
semi-abandoned.

So, for now I would like to request the removal of mtail from this
architecture, so it can finally migrate to testing.

PS: I also requested[2] mtail upstream to try to address this.

Thanks.

No, the tooling does not yet support the new repo layout, you just add
upstream's repo as a remote and pull from there into the upstream branch.

This is what I have been doing in my packages, and what has been agreed
to become the standard for the go team. Using one branch for the
pristine upstream history, and another one that keeps the repackaging
differences. Gbp buildpackage works well with this workflow, as you only
need to add the appropriate tags. The missing part will be the
automation to update these branches, ideally using files-exluded as the
source of truth.

Not in this case, I am afraid. conntrack is mostly about providing
prometheus metrics, so it is core to its functionality; while the common
lib uses it to decorate the http clients.

The main problem is that common contains a bunch of unrelated stuff, I

Definitely. I am sorry for causing this!

I did try to test for breakage, but I guess I misinterpreted the salsa

was not going to be breakage.

Also, it would be great if upstream did not do these kind of breaking
changes without the equivalent of a soname change..

I think the problem is the latest upload of
golang-github-prometheus-client-golang-dev, which had some incompatible
changes. It also affected docker go-metrics (#900597).

Sadly, the only solution is to update to the new API, but probably
upstream has already done it in their repo.

Not sure what happened, but you can see there is some timing info in
some tests, and the run that failed was 3 times slower than the other,
and the tests that passed were very close to the cut-off:

Passing:

While we should fix this, I don't think this counts as a serious bug.
The tests fail sometimes (probably on a busy server), but that's it.

I think the severity of this bug should be lowered, as this is

I did not notice the update of mesh would break the current alertmanager
in testing. I did the upload yesterday in preparation for a new upload

Sadly, the golang ecosystem is very immature and has not yet learned

Well, I don't really care about being not standard in that sense. The
standard is to run docker packages downloaded from untrusted sources,
fwiw. My objective is to provide sysadmins that align with the Debian
worldview with a working Prometheus stack. I have had already to deviate
from the standard in a few things, for example: kubernetes support was
removed from the prometheus Debian package because it is unmaintainable,
until the k8s people get their act together.

> What exactly in Debian policy is preventing us shipping Alertmanager
> built as intended by upstream?

I don't remember which section in the Policy that is. But those
generated files are not source code, and therefore there is a
requirement to (re)build them from source. It is the same as i was
shipping a pre-compiled .so file.

This is not really a problem, I am not shipping the binary blob (because
I want to reuse libraries already present in debian). The problem is the
generated code, which is not source code (preferred form of modification).

Exactly. Prometheus itself does the same thing.

The approach I took was to remove the blob and patch the web serving
code to read the files directly from disk, and then to do al the JS
processing at build time from source.

I would do the same for alertmanager, but for that I need a working Elm
stack to generate the JS from source, otherwise it is a serious
violation of Debian policy.

Vendoring Go libs would not be a direct violation of policy, but it is
something we try hard to avoid as it becomes a maintenance problem.
Vendoring pre-generated pre-minified code, on the other hand, is not
possible in Debian, and that's how we ended in the current situation :-)

It is because of this that I thought of stripping the UI away, and
replacing it with something bare-bones. This would not be that difficult
to do, it is just a matter of writing some html and JS.

If you could help me with that, I would take care of integrating the
replacement UI, and I could get a new release out of the door pretty
quickly.

I know, this is a pretty sad state. The problem is that upgrading the
alertmanager requires packaging and uploading many new packages, as they
started using the Elm system for the UI, and no part of it is in Debian.

The alternative to this is to develop a patch that will provide an
barebones UI without the dynamic JS generated with Elm.

I am maintaining most of the prometheus ecosystem by myself, so I have
not been able to do any of this. If you have the resources to help, you
would be most welcomed!

Another flaky test. Actually, I think it only worked by chance (because
goroutines will take a while to start), but it still required a busy
CPU, 19 niceness, and a while loop to reproduce..

I have a fix and it seems I can't reproduce the problem any more.

Uhm, I think you are mistaken, or I missed something.

The directory is created when unpacking the deb file:

$ dpkg -L prometheus-alertmanager | grep /var/lib/
/var/lib/prometheus
/var/lib/prometheus/alertmanager

Then the post-installation script does this:

chown -R prometheus:prometheus /var/lib/prometheus/alertmanager || true
chown -R prometheus:prometheus /var/log/prometheus || true

And the initsciprt does this (as root):

mkdir -p `dirname $PIDFILE` || true
chown -R $USER: `dirname $LOGFILE`
chown -R $USER: `dirname $PIDFILE`

So, I don't know where you saw that mkdir, nor where it could be a problem.

Ah, sorry, now I see that you are reporting against the version in

What I can do (and I had forgotten to do before), is to backport that

Thanks for your bug report. I had no idea there was now a tsdb lockfile,

2018-01-09 Thread Martín Ferrari
Source: golang-golang-x-net-dev
Version: 1:0.0+git20170629.c81e7f2+dfsg-1
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

I noted a few packages failing to build from source on s390x, and tracked down
the cause to this package:

# golang.org/x/net/internal/socket
src/golang.org/x/net/internal/socket/sys_linux_s390x.s:5:10: fatal error:
textflag.h: No such file or directory
 #include "textflag.h"
  ^~~~
compilation terminated.

It seems the source is meant to be compiled with golang-go (which includes
textflag.h), but we are compiling with gccgo, and thus it fails.

I guess.. Also, we should probably remove that field from most packages,
since we have decided to use upstream git history, and repack on git, so
there is no real usage for it --except documentation.

The vendor.json is an autogenerated file that keeps versions (commit
hashes and dates) of every vendored dependency. I usually keep it around
for reference, as it is very useful when things break. I really don't
see much the point of removing it, or making a very complicated
files-excluded field. Also, how can it be a DFSG violation?

Bug#877541: [pkg-go] Bug#877541: prometheus FTBFS on i386: FAIL github.com/prometheus/prometheus/storage/local [build failed]

2017-10-24 Thread Martín Ferrari
reassign 877541 golang-1.9
retitle 877541 golang-1.9: Invalid instruction error in i386
thanks

This seems to be an issue with go 1.9, this error is not reproducible
with other versions of go:

$ /usr/lib/go-1.7/bin/go test -c -v
github.com/prometheus/prometheus/storage/local
$ /usr/lib/go-1.8/bin/go test -c -v
github.com/prometheus/prometheus/storage/local

FMOVD   ""..autotmp_78+176(DX)(SP*1), F0

I can't find any reference listing this instruction as valid i386, but
maybe I am not looking correctly.

It is the same issue as #877319. Also, I don't see anything weird in the
code (it faults at the for):

got := it.RangeValues(metric.Interval{OldestInclusive: 0,
NewestInclusive: 3})
// Note that we cannot just reflect.DeepEqual(want, got) because
it has
// the semantics of NaN != NaN.
for i, gotSamplePair := range got {
wantSamplePair := want[i]
if !wantSamplePair.Equal(&gotSamplePair) {
t.Fatalf("want %v, got %v", wantSamplePair,
gotSamplePair)
}
}

Bug#855124: raising severity

Moreover, if I try to patch the library adding this:

import gi
gi.require_version("Gtk", "3.0")

I don't get the Gtk error, but still get a segmentation fault. This was
also reported on Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/geis/+bug/1695998)

It seems that this issue is affecting all packages that use waitid in
mips, and that the problem is either in the kernel or in gccgo (but I've
heard it is actually a kernel problem).

I think it does not make much sense to open more RC bugs against these
packages that cannot really be fixed until the root cause is addressed.

It is not testing the hardware, it is testing that the write completes,
and developers many times assume everybody has fast hardware, and then
you get these bugs. We could argue about disabling this test (which is
noted as hacky by upstream), but those are not the reasons.

Bug#874499: ITP: golang-github-google-go-cmp -- Package for comparing Go values in tests

2017-09-06 Thread Martín Ferrari
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Martín Ferrari

* Package name: golang-github-google-go-cmp
  Version : 0.1.0-1
  Upstream Author : Google
* URL : https://github.com/google/go-cmp
* License : BSD-3-clause
  Programming Lang: Go
  Description : Package for comparing Go values in tests

 This package is intended to be a more powerful and safer alternative to
 reflect.DeepEqual for comparing whether two values are semantically equal.
 .
 The primary features of cmp are:
  * When the default behavior of equality does not suit the needs of the
test,
custom equality functions can override the equality operation. For
example, an equality function may report floats as equal so long as they
are within some tolerance of each other.
  * Types that have an Equal method may use that method to determine
equality.
This allows package authors to determine the equality operation for the
types that they define.
  * If no custom equality functions are used and no Equal method is defined,
equality is determined by recursively comparing the primitive kinds
on both
values, much like reflect.DeepEqual. Unlike reflect.DeepEqual,
unexported
fields are not compared by default; they result in panics unless
suppressed
by using an Ignore option (see cmpopts.IgnoreUnexported) or explictly
compared using the AllowUnexported option.
 .  See the GoDoc documentation
(https://godoc.org/github.com/google/go-cmp/cmp)
 for more information.

Thanks for the report, but I am not sure I understand this. The current
code in ole.c reads already like your proposed patch:

if (nLen > OLENAMELENGTH) {
free(e);
return NULL;
}

Although I can reproduce the issue you mention, so there is definitely a
bug. Sadly, catdoc's code is not the easiest to follow :/

I have just tested that, with eller for mips(64)el and minkus for mips.
And sadly, that is true:

eller (mipsel):
$ go env
GOARCH="mipso32"

eller (mips64el):
$ go env
GOARCH="mipsn64"

minkus (mips):
$ go env
GOARCH="mipso32"

The bug referenced above says this might be already fixed in gccgo, and
looking at the commit history, it does seem to be true:
https://go.googlesource.com/gofrontend/+/3f713ddb2a9a2a736f3a12d71c56cb7fd444afba%5E%21/

This harmonizes the arch names with gc, and as a side effect, fixes the
missing little-endian marker.

The problem is that gcc and friends make my head hurt, and I don't
really understand if this made it into the 7.2 release or not. Seeing
that eller has libgo 7.2, I assume it did not.. Does anybody understand
all this?

Since the latest update to golang-google-genproto-dev, this package FTBFS.

The fix for this is in release 0.7.0, but that requires also updating

Hi,

Currently, lintian complains about the pkg-go testsuite, but autodep8 has
support for it since 0.9.

Can you add pkg-go to the list of valid testsuites?

Moreover, autodep8 already supports a few other automatic test suites, so those
should be added too:

dkms
elpa
go
nodejs
perl
python
r
ruby

Thanks.

Yes, sorry, I was confused with x/tools, which has disabled tests. This
one does not get built in other arches, so the relevant tests are not
executed.. Maybe we should make it arch:any...?

> Which package ftbfs because of x/sys?

Prometheus and friends were failing. I understood now what you are doing
here (it took me a while), and by passing tags I managed to get them
building again, but that's not a reasonable solution.. The packages
should build out of the box. Can't you add the correct build
restrictions for gccgo so we don't need the tags?
