The next version will have the fix. Why this doesn't trigger any key violations in the DB at runtime, I do not know. Therefore I'm using this report which is related. I suggest treating several folders like a temp directory, just letting www-data in is no longer the way to go since the days where we started using php as fastcgi and such, I believe. This is also necessary to be able to use multi-site setup flexibly (see also #437836). chmod 1753 - /var/cache/phpbb3/cache/ - /var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/ - /var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/gallery/ - /var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/upload/ - /var/lib/phpbb3/store/ - /var/lib/phpbb3/files/ Probably what remains in /etc and in /usr should also be moved to /var/lib. - /usr/share/phpbb3/www/images/ranks/ - /usr/share/phpbb3/www/images/smilies/ (owner can stay root) - /etc/phpbb3/styles /etc/phpbb3/styles is another matter: If we follow the path from the web server to the actual files: /usr/share/phpbb3/www/styles -> /etc/phpbb3/styles, /etc/phpbb3/styles/* -> /usr/share/phpbb3/styles/... Maybe one should link /usr/share/phpbb3/www/styles directly into /var/lib/phpbb3/styles/ (new) and put a link to the default styles from there to /usr/share/phpbb3/styles/, just as /etc/phpbb3/styles/ does it right now. However, I do not believe one should leave those default styles writable via the web. There should be common ground, especially in multi-site. One could tailor their admin scripts/control panels/whatever to create new templates derived from the old ones that the users can modify via the web interface. Anyway, changes that cannot be written to the filesystem are stored in the database by phpBB AFAIK. omg, that's because dbconfig throws a myriad of errors.

SQL error: no such function: UNIX_TIMESTAMP() -> this is not mysql!
SQL error: near ",": syntax error -> extended inserts don't work here
I've attached a working database scheme to be put into
/usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/phpbb3/install/sqlite (I have used the
attached script with a vanilla mysql phpbb3 database as the source)
There are however more problems:
/etc/phpbb3/database.inc.php is not correct in this case, by the way.
I only make it work when it says $dbserver="$basepath/$dbname"
$basepath and $dbname alone make no database connection as the call to
sqlite_(p)open in phpBB expects the first argument to be the file name
(for other auth methods this is the server, but this is how the phpBB DB
abstraction layer works...)
I don't know enough about dbconfig though to fix this.
Last but not least, a dependency on php5-sqlite is missing!

AFAIK these new "minor" releases of phpBB sometimes change major things. Simply "replacing files" will thus not work / will not happen in stable anyhow, and more work may be necessary. Bug#550321: upgrade walkthrough
Hey there,
I have tried to accomplish an update using the installation directory
taken from the 3.0.4 tarball at phpbb.com.
A tough job !
Here's what I did:
aptitude install phpbb3
- apache2
- dbconfig: no
Add the patches from
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=437836 to enable
multi-board support that I use (be careful: the patches do not all work,
see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=437836#92)
I use auto_prepend_file for my PHP CGIs:
installer.patch), as
the original one does not work. I wonder how anyone was ever able to
successfully use that. Maybe with register_globals=on ?
Before running the updater/installer I change permissions of several
folders.
I would suggest treating these like a temp directory, just letting
www-data inside is out since the days where we started using php as
fastcgi and such.

/var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/gallery/ /var/lib/phpbb3/avatars/upload/

(Note to maintainer: we should discuss all of this -- maybe also create
further symlinks from /usr/share/phpbb3/www/images/{ranks,smilies}
somewhere into /var/lib/phpbb3/ ??)
When using open_basedir it obviously needs to allow access to all those
directories of both the old and new installations:

Run the updater (goto your.site/install/), follow the instructions (give
it the data to your OLD install and use Board path: ../../phpbb2/site/)

Please check that the target directory exists and is writable by the
webserver.
in one of the steps. I wouldn't know why. I ignored it as I am now tired.
Goto the forum, login as one of the previous administrative users,
create a search index as directed and remove the install folder. The
install will then be available.

But (nothing too bad): the store patch created errors and a reject file
(==> acp_database.php.rej), no idea why. I made those changes manually then.
I used the install folder from the original 3.0.4 tarball.

severity: minor thanks I guess it's really due to much less virii being transmitted to my machine. What the upgrade to Lenny has to do with that, I do not know. I have to investigate. The error message appears if there has not been transmitted any (recognized) virus in the last 24 hours.
