It's not obvious from the release notes that rsyslog is deprecated. Maybe
it's too late now for Bookworm, but this speaks to Debian's suitability as
a platform for services. Frankly it makes Devuan seem more appealing, for
folks with any sort of mental investment in Debian.

This is all fairly disappointing.

What part of the release notes are you referring to? It might be useful to
reference that specifically, in addition to the pointer.

Nothing relevant is obvious here for rsyslogd:

  https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/amd64/release-notes/index.en.html

We probably want to avoid nasty surprises. I haven't upgraded my servers to
Bookworm yet, but scanning the release notes, nothing there would indicate
to me that my logging services were about to break.

David's suggestion of requiring orphan-sysvinit-scripts seems like a
sensible solution that will prevent outages. Let's posit, for instance,
that there's a hospital somewhere using Debian for some of their
infrastructure, and running sysvinit because they require reliable systems.
It would seem responsible to not arbitrarily let logging break on an
upgrade. That's not what people expect from Debian.

The last rdep is gone, so I guess we can just RM libcolor-calc-perl?

Or we can salvage it, as mtj has added another patch, which makes the

Not sure if it's woth it; if yes we probably should 1) merge the two

Bug#1029093: solaar doesn't enable plugdev when plugdev requested

2023-01-17 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: solaar
Version: 1.1.8+dfsg-1

My previous bug, BZ#1028922, was closed inappropriately, given that the
bug is not fixed in Bookworm, and will impact Bullseye users until Bullseye
leaves support.

Solaar notes this on configuration:

However, even if "yes" is selected, the line that includes plugdev is
commented out in the udev rules file shipped with the package,
/lib/udev/rules.d/60-solaar.rules:

# Grant members of the "plugdev" group access to receiver (useful for SSH users)
#MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"

...which results in plugdev not being set as the group for matching
devices, instead leaving them with the default 0600 root:root, which
plugdev users cannot access. If this line is manually uncommented Solaar
works as intended with plugdev users.

The easiest fix might be to simply be to note this in the configuration
dialog, as it'd be reasonable for users wanting this to work with plugdev
to understand that an additional manual step is required.

Observed on Debian Bookworm with Solaar 1.1.8+dfsg-1.
Observed on Debian Bullseye with Solaar 1.0.4+dfsg-1.

Security is a process and requires conscious thought by an administrator,

So, given that ubuntu's latest LTS release will be pretty standard for the
next two years, we're going to ask people to do some pinning to qemu from
groovy or something if they want to debootstrap cross platform? Debian
stable will have the same problem until Bullseye is released shortly. How
do we surface a better error from libc, so that it's not an opaque
"segfault"?

Bug#987497: libc-bin: Enabling Static PIE support on arm64 libc breaks qemu bootstrapping

2021-04-24 Thread Randall Mason
Package: libc-bin
Version: 2.31-11
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: rand...@mason.ch

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I run a CI build of images for my raspberry pi with the upstream
kernel and debian userspace. I use qemu-debootstrap. At some point
the builds stopped working for bullseye and sid. The host of the
qemu-debootstrap is either Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04, the only debian
  based options on Github Actions.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I ended up pinning the build to snapshot 20210103T144403Z as that
works on both bullseye and sid. On first boot I use cloud-init to
update packages if connected to network.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
I'm no longer getting up to date debian when I load a new image on
my Raspberry Pi. If networking is down on first boot, I'm stuck
at an old version of debian.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I'd hope to be able to continue building bulleye and sid images.

I did a bisect using snapshot and the last working version was that
snapshot and the only change to base debootstrap packages was updating
from libc 2.31-6 for both bullseye and sid. I tested sid, as there are
more versions between 6 and 11 released and it broke immediately on
2.31-7. Looking at the changelog I would guess that it's

https://salsa.debian.org/glibc-team/glibc/-/commit/ac2dc2a2df164509bfa35b2e8181606510baa123
that broke the qemu-debootstrap. Here are some example segfaults:

Get:7 http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates/main libgudev-1.0-0 amd64

Obviously, people that have not updated those package and do a reboot, will
need to either fix the
permissions on /var/run/postgresql manually, or update those packages

NB in my previous post I suggested that running

sudo sh /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions

would fix the ownership of /var/run/postgresql

and that appears not to be the case, anyway. Sorry

Bug#908555: pydicom dependencies

Hi, I came across this bug report and wanted to clarify -- gdcm is only an
optional dependency for pydicom, although perhaps it has been set up
differently here depending on how it is being used.

Bugs #881449 and #867374 were both opened for this, finding that imap3 is no
longer a valid port, but it's still broken in stable.

While it's nice that a newer version corrects this, it's bad that it's still
broken in the production release of Debian, and as it's a trivially easy fix,
it should really be backported.

Thanks in advance!

Bug#848041: this still exists as of 2018-08-08

2018-08-08 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
To confirm the original poster's observations, this still exists as of August
2018. Removing libjson-xs-perl causes libcpanel-json-xs-perl to be installed
instead, and per https://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=94784 and
discussion in
https://forum.bestpractical.com/t/perl-upgrade-on-debian-9-causes-json-error/31524/5
this works.

It would be nice if this weren't broken out of the box. Making this package
substitution would do the trick.

Thank you.

Bug#839584: cryptsetup: cryptroot hook for initramfs doesn't detect root within RAID

2016-10-02 Thread Chuck Mason
Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.7.0-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?
Configuring a machine with RAID and encrypted disks.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
Begin by encrypting entire disks:
cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/sdc
cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/sdd
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc sdc_encrypted
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdd sdd_encrypted

Create a raid array on the whole encrypted disk:
mdadm --create --verbose --level=1 /dev/md/hdd_storage --raid-devices=2
/dev/mapper/sdc_encrypted /dev/mapper/sdd_encrypted
/usr/share/mdadm/mkconf > /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

Partition the raid array:
fdisk /dev/md/hdd_storage
...
w (write changes)
* Linux immediately recognizes new partition /dev/md127p1

Create a filesystem:
mkfs.ext4 /dev/md127p1

Using blkid, add /dev/sdc -> sdc_encrypted and /dev/sdd -> sdd_encrypted
targets to /etc/crypttab
#
sdc_encrypted /dev/disk/by-uuid/58560717-94f7-4a57-ae88-d83e16948969 none
luks,timeout=30
sdd_encrypted /dev/disk/by-uuid/fc6fa717-83dc-44a3-8a09-de7585f70809 none
luks,timeout=30

Using blkid, set /dev/md127p1 to be the root (/) in /etc/fstab

Output of blkid | grep md127p1:
/dev/md127p1: UUID="e084a1e0-f5bd-4342-ae87-a014561fce0c" TYPE="ext4"
PARTUUID="2e7f7afa-b579-4b1f-83a8-c755708b9051"

After mounting /dev/md127p1 (and necessary /proc, /sys, /dev, etc.),
update-initramfs does NOT detect an encrypted root partition.

* What was the outcome of this action?
Cryptsetup was not included in initrd and the machine does not complete boot.

* What outcome did you expect instead?
Cryptsetup should be included in initrd.

* More information:
It seems that get_fs_devices() in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/cryptroot
only looks at /etc/crypttab for device UUIDs, when there are
other device UUIDs available in "blkid" that are available for use as a root
mount.

Bug#824158: Installing allegro4 and allegro5 side-by-side in Debian

2016-05-13 Thread Mason
Hello,

I've had a chat with the Allegro devs, and they are positive
that allegro4 and allegro5 can coexist (otherwise it's a bug
that needs fixing).

So the fix seems trivial: to remove the relevant "Conflicts"
clauses. Tobias, Andreas, what do you think?

Bug#790324: luakit: Improve security level, dubious features

2015-06-27 Thread Mason Larobina
Hi Philippe,

I'm the upstream.

What is this 'ugh' patch?

The other points you raise are valid. I'll look into them when I get some
time this week.

Thanks.

On 27 June 2015 at 21:27, Philippe Grégoire gregoi...@hotmail.com wrote:

 Package: luakit
 Version: 2012.09.13-r1-4
 Severity: serious

 Dear Maintainer,

Looking at globals.lua, I was considering that the low level of security
 was
due to the (somewhat) aged package. Now, looking at the changes applied by
 the
'ugh' patch, I see some of these artifacts are not provided upstream, but
 rather
by the maintainer. From what I understood from an earlier bug report, these
changes were made due to not reproducible builds. Now, before trying to
 enter
testing again, I think the following points should be considered.

 Search engines

All search engines, except github, are specified using an unsecured
 connexion
although all the servers do. The 'ugh' patch _downgrades_ them, actually.
 I am
also wondering why was Netflix added, since, afaik, it doesn't work out of
 the box.

 x509 certificates

Although debatable, support for user-provided x509 certificates is risky.
Personally, I consider certificates installed system-wide (read: by root)
 much
more trustable. For one, and simply, they cannot be modified by a rogue
 process
 ran by the user.

 Regarding 'soup.ssl_strict = false', I don't think I need to explain.

 Looking up /etc/hosts

I am pretty sure this is the job of /etc/nsswitch.conf

 Thank you

Bug#785203: clamav-freshclam: ERROR: Can't create temporary directory

2015-05-13 Thread Rob Mason

Package: clamav
Version: 0.98.7+dfsg-0+deb7
Severity: Serious

This error appears against 'freshclam', but I believe its related to
clamav-base.

Following a dist-upgrade of clamav, the /var/lib/clamav directory
ownership is reset to 'clamav'. This behaviour is incorrect if clamav
has been configured to run under a different UID such as 'defang'.

My scenario:

In /etc/clamd.conf, 'User' and 'LocalSocketGroup' are set to 'defang'.
'AllowSupplementaryGroups' is set to 'false'

In /etc/freshclam.conf, 'DatabaseOwner' is set to 'defang'

Following an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' the output of
'/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log' shows:

Wed May 13 13:14:42 2015 - Update process terminated

Do you intend to fix it in Wheezy, or will this be like LXC, where someone

Bug#733754: plymouth errors out during start-up

2013-12-31 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.5.1-5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Plymouth in Wheezy errors out. I'm having difficulty capturing output of the
error and might have to resort to some camerawork if I can't find something
logged.

I observe two errors. First, something Plymouth is doing either directly or
indirectly results in a denied lookup for information associated with UID 0.
Second, the plymouth init script returns failure consistently. (This is with
a fresh install of Wheezy.)

I'll add more to the ticket as I'm able to capture it. But for now, this
largely destroys Plymouth's appeal, as rather than covering boot messages, it
generates errors that wouldn't be there otherwise, both foreshortening its
screen coverage and adding worrisome error messages to the boot process.

Makes Debian look shabby having things broken in Stable, and as such if this
is something known and fixed in Jessie or Sid, it ought to be applied to
Wheezy. I don't know that this is the case with this package, but I'd like us
to avoid any unfortunate situation in which the flagship product of Debian is
neglected for any reason. Thanks!

Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.5.1-5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I apologize for my previous bug report having evidently confused you. I'm
reporting a bug in Debian Wheezy (Stable), not Jessie or Sid. As such, the
bug certainly isn't fixed in Stable. It's inappropriate to close it until
a corrected version has been submitted for inclusion in Stable, and I don't
see Plymouth in stable-proposed-updates. So, I'm opening this one that we can
use as a reminder until a fixed Plymouth has been processed.

Debian ships a Stable operating system and has Testing and Unstable versions
to ensure that the next Stable version is bug-free - Stable is Debian's
product, and the version of Plymouth included in it is currently broken.

As noted:

Bug#731805: xfce4-weather-plugin: package fails

2013-12-09 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: xfce4-weather-plugin
Version: 0.7.4-3+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

The version of the plug-in shipped by Debian no longer works. According to
the project's web site:

Attention: Please update to 0.8.3. Versions older than 0.8.0 no longer
work (bug #8105), and all earlier 0.8.x versions have problems with the
search dialog (bug #9636) and are no longer supported.

They reference two bugs:

https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8105
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9636

Between these two, the package is not unusable as shipped. I'm not sure how
Debian wants to approach this - backporting fixes or updating the package
in-place - but I hope the answer isn't leave it broken.

The Jessie source package (0.8.3-1) builds on Wheezy with no modification
beyond installing a couple extra build dependencies; these weren't installed
by apt-get source xfce4-weather-plugin.

libxfce4ui-1-dev libsoup2.4-dev xfce4-dev-tools libtool

However, this isn't a process we want to inflict on end-users.

Thanks!

It was pointed out to me that the version you're suggesting (0.7.4-4) exists
in wheezy-proposed-updates, but isn't yet in stable.

I tested the package from wheezy-proposed-updates, and it does, indeed, work.
Hopefully it makes it into Stable soon.

Bug#729608: rhythmbox: some user interface graphics missing

2013-11-14 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 2.97-2.1
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

I've recently installed Rhythmbox on my system. I don't run a desktop
environment, and evidently Rhythmbox wants to use an image file from a
package I don't have installed in its user interface, because in the
track list pane, to the left of the currently playing track there is a
small image showing a dog-eared page with a red X displayed in it. I
interpret this as being a default image to be used when the desired
image isn't available.

This is a cosmetic bug, but it would be nice if the Rhythmbox package
pulled in whatever package supplies this image file.

Bug#715058: knockd: knock does something wrong...

2013-07-05 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: knockd
Version: 0.5-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

*** End of the template - remove these lines ***

I've just started using knockd, and that seems to work well. However, the
knock client fails consistently. I've gotten it to work by luck alone, it
seems.

When using knock, the system running knockd will emit log messages saying
that it sees stage 1, and sometimes stage 2, rarely stage 3, but only very
rarely will it see an entire sequence. This is true using both tcp and udp.

I don't believe this is an issue with the server, though, as I can substiture
netcat on the client end and have it work each and every time, without
deviation.

In testing just now, after seeing success, knock is consistently working,
after seeing stage one, then stage one, two, and three - it took several
tries to get it right.

I've run knock with the verbose flag, but I've not logged it with tcpdump. If
the maintainer is unable to reproduce this, I can try to gather more
information. I'm using three different knockd servers on three different
systems, on three different networks, so the failure seems not to be local to
me, anyway.

Dear Maintainer,

When I install a software RAID 1 system, there is no option, even with an

install and dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc, where selecting multiple devices as

forgotten. (If the option exists and I'm just missing it, it's well-hidden!)

Bug#701940: libdvdread4: libdvdread doesn't search /usr/local for libdvdcss

2013-02-28 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: libdvdread4
Version: 4.2.0+20120521-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The libdvdread-provided README.css file says:

libdvdread probes for libdvdcss at runtime and if found, will use it to
decrypt sections of the DVD as necessary.

However, /usr/local is not evidently checked. When compiling from source, one
of the recommended options, a direct install or a more sanity install using
stow(8) will both default to installing in /usr/local, and hence won't be
found by libdvdread. (At least, that's my experience here.)

I worked around this by saying stow -t /usr libdvdcss to locate the library
in /usr/lib, but it would be more elegant if /usr/local was searched, so
that local packages could be confined there.

Thanks!

$UDPServerBindRuleset is unable to bind UDP rules. As a workaround I'm able

Note that $InputTCPServerBindRuleset *does* work, it's just

Bug#692770: dictionaries-common: The expected /usr/share/dict/words is a dangling symlink.

2012-11-08 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: dictionaries-common
Version: 1.12.10
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I expect /usr/share/dict/words to exist and be usable everywhere, and a great
many shell scripts written over the last couple decades do too. I noted to my
horror that it is non-functional now. It appears to be provided by the
wamerican package, perhaps among others, but dictionaries-common steps in and
points it to a non-existent file in /etc/dictionaries-common.

$ ls -l /usr/share/dict/words

diversion by dictionaries-common to:

/usr/share/dict/words needs to exist in a usable form without gutting my
packages or having to dance around them.

Bug#692770: additional information

2012-11-08 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
I'm not sure where this would want to live in the process, but after poking
around, I noted that purging wamerican and reinstalling it resulted in
/etc/dictionaries-common/words being added as a link to
/usr/share/dict/american-english. The multiple levels of indirection are
perhaps unfortunate, but this will result in scripts depending on the
presence of /usr/share/dict/words being able to run without error.

Is there a history of package versions maintained anywhere by default on my

Bug#615020: xdm: ConsoleKit support

2012-03-02 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.11-1
Followup-For: Bug #615020

Dear Maintainer,

As XDM doesn't support consolekit directly, users must take a couple
potentially non-obvious steps to get NetworkManager and XFCE4 Power
Manager (and likely similar systems) to run. Specifically, someone
using XDM must remove the nox11 directive from the consolekit line
in /etc/pam.d/common-session and then launch their session manager
through ck-launch-session in their .xsession file.

There is a patch for this included in bug #17325 in the FreeDesktop.org
Bugzilla. I'm not presently familiar enough with the code to usefully
review it.

Thank you kindly for your assistance. Much appreciated.

Bug#660902: linux-image-2.6-amd64: netatalk/afpd glitch with Linux 2.6.32

2012-02-22 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: linux-image-2.6-amd64
Version: 2.6.32+29
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

With Linux 2.6.32 as supplied with Debian Squeeze, Netatalk is unable
to thrive. Connections made to afpd will open, but attempting to transfer
files will take a very long time and/or eventually time out.

I've noted this with both Netatalk as supplied with Squeeze and with
Netatalk 2.2.1 built from the Wheezy source package, which I evidently
need for AFP 3 support.

Installing Linux 3.2 from backports, with no other changes to the system,
allows afpd to work correctly. I hit on the idea of trying this after
installing a Fedora 16 system to compare performance and to try to isolate
the issue. Fedora 16 uses a newer kernel.

As it stands, Netatalk is unusable in Squeeze without a newer kernel. I
assume this to be an issue with the kernel that can be addressed and
corrected for the next minor release, and I'd be happy to help try to
isolate it and test any correction that's devised.

Bug#649139: gnome-terminal: Widget theme not honored when run in LXDE/Openbox - new since Squeeze

2011-11-17 Thread Mason Loring Bliss
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 3.0.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I run Gnome Terminal inside LXDE in Squeeze, and it works beautifully.
However, in Wheezy, the widget theme is not correctly applied. The impact of
this is that tabs are not correctly themed, meaning that it's very difficult
to identify which tab is active in most themes. For instance, on Squeeze I
can use ClearLooks and the active tab has a bar across the top, clearly
indicating that it's active.

I believe the issue is with Gnome Terminal specifically, because other
VTE-based terminals don't exhibit this behavious in Wheezy - Sakura,
xfce4-terminal, and lxterminal all correctly make use of the chosen widget
theme.

The fix is to replace lchdir with chdir.
There is only one occurrence of lchdir in the source file.

 Bah! This breaks certain semantics.
Also can't reproduce with git master HEAD which means it should work
in 2.2.1, it's probably already working in 2.2.0.

Bug#589071: netatalk cannot serve the root directory

2011-06-22 Thread Mason Mark
I have this problem too, and have had it for a couple years. I think it is
probably a basic bug in netatalk, and not configuration dependent, because it
occurs with a default install using only the default settings.

I've been hoping to use netatalk to manage a Ubuntu Linux server, and using the
superior development tools available for the Mac to edit all the various
various root-owned files (by adding '-admingroup admin' to afpd.conf).

Unfortunately, it doesn't work unless you make separate shares for every
directory on the machine: /etc, /var, etc.

I can confirm this bug exists in netatalk (2.1.4-1) that is the default on
Ubuntu 11.04. It also existed on a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4 (don't know
what version that was).

Steps to reproduce:

1.) Add a line like / Root to AppleVolumes.default

2.) Connect to the Mac via AFP over TCP/IP.

Initially it looks like it works, but:

- if you navigate into a subfolder, the Finder on the client Mac shows it as
empty

- if you copy a folder to the root directory using Finder on the client, the
Finder throws all manner of weird errors (copying a file works, however)

If you do take the time to make AFP volumes out of every folder on the root
volume of the netatalk host, everything works as expected.

So this problem seems to pertain only to the root volume. For use cases like
mine (perhaps not so common) it means that netatalk is not a viable option
(although I keep checking every year to see if it's been fixed...).

We (the luakit developers) are slowly adding more chrome:// pages (or
luakit:// pages as they are now known) but we haven't implemented a
luakit://bookmarks/ page yet.

A re-write of the bookmarks system to use a sqlite3 database and the
creation of a luakit://bookmarks/ handler is in the works so stay
tuned.

Bug#276220: console-common: Conflict with Plymouth

2011-03-07 Thread Marshall Mason
Package: console-common
Version: 0.7.85
Severity: normal

After I installed and configured Plymouth, the splash image would display, and
then it would drop into the console, then stop and do nothing. I hit enter and
it continued. After some debugging I found the problem to be in
/etc/init.d/keymap.sh. It seems this has been a problem in the past with
splashy, as I found this section:

# Avoid messing with splashy boot
# Thanks to John Hughes and Marc Haber for suggestions
pidof splashy /dev/null
   mkdir -p /lib/init/rw/splashy/
   touch /lib/init/rw/splashy/splashy-stopped-keymap
   exit 0

I changed splashy to plymouthd as a work-around. It's my understanding that
splashy is no longer supported in squeeze, so this section should probably be
updated.

This problem seems similar to Bug #575431, except for me it dropped to the
console rather than hang in the splash screen.

Bug#601601: spamassassin: cannot include 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1/128 as it has already been included

2010-10-29 Thread Justin Mason
hi guys, it's a NetAddr::IP regression. Mark Martinec said (on the
SA users list):

Looks like a but in NetAddr::IP 4.034, it forgets to adjust the CIDR mask
when converting an IPv4 address to an IPv6 notation:

 correct (NetAddr-IP-4.033):
  $ perl -le 'use NetAddr::IP; print NetAddr::IP-new6(127.0.0.0/8)'
 0:0:0:0:0:0:7F00:0/104

 wrong (NetAddr-IP-4.034):

Something within libnetaddr-ip-perl perl changed between version
4.028+dfsg-1 (currently in squeeze) and version 4.034+dfsg-1 (currently
in sid).  Consider the attached perl program.  The
_convert_ipv4_cidr_to_ipv6 function is pulled from spamassassin's
Mail::SpamAssassin::NetSet module.  On a squeeze system, the program
 outputs the following:

 Loopback network: 127.0.0.0/8
 converted to v6 mapped: 0:0:0:0:0::7F00:0/104
 IPv6 loopback address: 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1/128
 Is 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1/128 contained within 0:0:0:0:0::7F00:0/104? 0

On a sid sytem, the program outputs this:
 Loopback network: 127.0.0.0/8
 converted to v6 mapped: 0:0:0:0:0::7F00:0/8
 IPv6 loopback address: 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1/128
 Is 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1/128 contained within 0:0:0:0:0::7F00:0/8? 1

Note the differences in the network mask when the loopback /8 is
mapped to a v6 address.  Note that this leads to the
NetAddr::IP-contains method returning an incorrect value.

 Thanks.

Bug#575891: strace logs

2010-04-06 Thread Chris Mason
We've gone through the strace logs and thanks to some pointers to the dpkg
code, I think I can explain this. Dpkg does something like this:

while( filename = readdir(/var/dpkg/info)) {
err = rename(/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/filename, /var/lib/dpkg/info);
if (err) {
unlink /var/lib/dpkg/info/filename
}
}

The basic idea is that for each file in /var/lib/dpkg/info we overwrite it
with a file from /var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci. Btrfs implements readdir with a
per-directory sequence number. Each time you make a new file in the
directory it gets a new sequence number, which is returned as the offset
for seekdir/telldir use.

The rename operation is creating a new file, so it can show up again in
the next readdir call. The strace shows readdir finding a file name,
then renaming over it into /var/lib/dpkg/info and then finding the file
name again.

This could actually happen with any of the filesystems, but btrfs is
especially consistent at reproducing it. A while ago, git hit a similar
problem:

http://www.mail-archive.com/btrfs-de...@oss.oracle.com/msg00370.html

Which we solved in btrfs by forcing a very high readdir offset when the
entire directory had been read, but this doesn't quite work for dpkg
because it doesn't read all the directory entries before it starts
processing them. Git later added a commit to avoid the problem
internally as well.

I would suggest changing the loop to look like this:

while (filename = readdir(/var/dpkg/info)) {
add filename to list of things that need processing
}

for each filename in list {
rename (/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/filename, /var/lib/dpkg/info)
}

In other words, buffer the readdir results. Just let me know if you
have other questions about this, thanks for bringing us into the
debugging.

-chris

2008-11-04 Thread Jeremy Mason
I compiled 2.6.26.6 from kernel.org with make-kpkg and came up with
different results from the person in #504167. Out of 10 sleep/resume
cycles 2 were slow. This kernel used /boot/config-2.6.26-1-686 as it's
.config. I deleted the kernel source directory and I built two more
kernels just to make sure of the results. One without copying the config
from /boot and another that I compiled without the need for initrd. All
had the same random slow resume. Typically 2 to 3 times out of 10.

I am seeing the same issue on my T61. My system uses intel graphics so
there shouldn't be any taint in the kernel. Sometimes it resumes
normally and sometimes it takes several minutes to come up. When I open
the notebook the system chirps and the sleep LED turns off. The wireless
LED and the video should come up next, but on the misbehaving resumes
they don't turn on for several minutes. The tool used to put the
notebook to sleep doesn't seem to matter. Kpowersave, s2ram, and
pm-suspend have all had slow resumes. Downgrading to 2.6.26-8 has given
me 6 good resumes so far with no slow resumes.

Bug#495562: Btrfs stability

2008-08-20 Thread Chris Mason
Btrfs is not suitably stable for production use, and the disk format
will continue to change over the next few releases.

The plan is to finalize the disk format by the end of the year.

Btrfs packages have been built against redhat, suse, gentoo and other
distros with warnings about the unstable disk format. They do make it
easier for testers who are interested in trying out the FS even though
the disk format is unstable.

I don't object to packages being built or included because more testers
(who understand they are using beta software) is a good thing. But, I
certainly wouldn't blame debian for taking btrfs out either.

Bug#481696: [spamassassin] refuses to listen on IPv6

2008-07-20 Thread Justin Mason

Now the problem is with -A:

spamd: aborting due to add_cidr error

Hmm... it's another bug, this time in upstream code. And it doesn't look
so trivial to fix. The code says:
 #v+
 set_allowed_ip('127.0.0.1'); #, '::1'); M::SA::NetSet needs fixing for
 IPv6
 #v-
so upstream is aware of this issue (but it doesn't mean they are aware
 that someone needed it ;-)

this is indeed fixed upstream, but in SVN trunk:

  https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=4964#c22

I haven't even tried the patch against 3.2.x, as we weren't planning
to release a 3.2.x with it.

After some confusion, I figured out that I had upgraded perl under a
running spamd, from 5.8 to 5.10. Apparently spamd needs to dynamically
load perl modules, and removing the 5.8 versions breaks it. It would be
great if spamd could be restarted when perl is upgraded. I suspect this
is not exactly trivial, which is why I'm filing at wishlist severity.

Would it be possible to keep the 5.8 module tree around, for running
processes to dynload? It's very common for long-running perl processes to
need to load a new module at runtime, long after the process was started;
SpamAssassin won't be the only one.

There are a few different things that need to happen to spamassassin
when perl is upgraded. Compiled rules need to be blown away and
 rebuilt, for example.

Regarding this -- bug #479865 -- that's a separate issue, and simply a bug
in SpamAssassin. There's no need to hack the perl package to deal with
it. It will be fixed upstream (once I can get the votes on
https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5899 and a 3.2.5
release put out... ;)

Bug#479865: spamassassin: perl 5.10 issue with sa-compile

2008-05-07 Thread Justin Mason

Paul Wise writes:
 Package: spamassassin
 Version: 3.2.4-1
 Severity: normal

I couldn't get spamassassin to start after upgrading to perl
5.10. Srangely it works with -D enabled, but then doesn't let you stop
it. The issue seems to be a problem with sa-compile and a symbol removed
from perl: Perl_Tstack_sp_ptr. I was able to fix it by removing
body_0.so and then rerunning sa-compile. Some links I found with Google:

sa-compile output (including body_0.so etc.) is specific to the version of
perl it was built with. The ABI for compiled perl XS modules changed
between 5.8.x and 5.10.x. This is what caused the sa-compile output to
become unloadable once you upgraded perl.

We need to fix SpamAssassin to include part of the perl version string
(5.10 for 5.10.0, 5.8 for 5.8.x, etc.) in the pathname of the
sa-compile output to avoid this, I think.

In the meantime, deleting the /var/lib/spamassassin/compiled/ dir when
you upgrade perl, and re-running sa-compile, will avoid this.

this is now open upstream as
https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5899 .

Bug#462980: php5-common: When running under AMD64 with X2 CPU round(17.775, 2) returns 17.77 - not under i486

2008-01-28 Thread Tony Mason-Sherwood
Package: php5-common
Version: 5.2.0-8+etch10
Severity: important

I am not sophisticated enough to know which module in php is doing this.
It is generated by the round function. We found it because we
discovered rounding errors in processes we were doing using mysql to do
calculations on a large number of records. I was able to isolate the
problem to the round function which does the same thing whether it is
written round(17.775 * 100)/100 or round(17.775,2). It returns 17.77
as a result. I know that there are many other operations of this
function that work correctly because of other calculations. This
problem occurs when running under linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64.
Under linux-image-2.6.18-5 it does fail to round not even when the
processor is an amd athlon 64 X2. We have tested it on several intel
processor machines without finding the problem.

Bug#285406: Bug#448140: Problems between Razor and SpamAssassin

2007-10-31 Thread Justin Mason

You're right, it would be good to get to the bottom of this.

I would guess that it has to do with how SpamAssassin is calling razor.

my guess is that Razor uses Sys::Syslog, the same module as SpamAssassin
uses, and calls openlog() with a new ident string:

openlog $ident, $logopt, $facility
Opens the syslog. $ident is prepended to every message. $logopt con-
tains zero or more of the words pid, ndelay, nowait. The cons option
is ignored, since the failover mechanism will drop down to the console
automatically if all other media fail. $facility specifies the part
of the system to report about, for example LOG_USER or LOG_LOCAL0: see
your syslog(3) documentation for the facilities available in your sys-
tem. This function will croak if it can't connect to the syslog dae-
mon.

this then replaces the SpamAssassin call to openlog().

it might be useful to open this bug upstream on the SA bugzilla,
we may be able to hack around it somehow.

Bug#428319: spamassassin: sa-update started from cron.daily is probably a DoS attack

2007-06-11 Thread Justin Mason

I'm not sure we can right now. (The architecture is there so that we
could handle it if we wanted to, but we'd better mitigate it if
 possible.)

That's my thinking -- the architecture is already there.

sa-update's DNS polling is incredibly lightweight and can handle millions
of clients updating simultaneously. It then picks up a URL from DNS to
find the list of mirrors, then picks a mirror and downloads from that.

Right now we only have one mirror listed, but it's trivial to add more to
the MIRRORED_BY list. Also, a failed download will not affect anything
for users, apart from maybe that they may miss a pending update for N
hours -- there'd be no serious error condition for them to have to deal
with. Accordingly I think we could leave it as-is, see what happens,
and deal with scaling the backend farm entirely reactively.

PS: it's not a matter of DDOS-proofing btw -- or at least, that's not what
the OP was talking about. If we're worried about DDOS-proofing, that's a
different issue (and again one that's fixed entirely at the backend).

(current question is about too many friendly users using sa-update;
DDOS-proofing is to deal with hostile botnets hitting our backend servers
en masse, at which stage we'd probably need something like Prolexic's help
on the backend.)

Actually, we can handle it just fine. We know what we're doing ;)
