Bug#389772: e2fsprogs: e2fsck produces broken htree on ppc
On Wed, Sep 27, 2006 at 02:22:51PM +0200, Jörg Sommer wrote: Package: e2fsprogs Version: 1.39-1 Severity: important you set the compiler option -fsigned-char, but on PowerPC the default is unsigned char. This makes the kernel uses unsigned and e2fsck uses signed chars. In the case of an 8 bit character, str2hashbuf() in lib/ext2fs/dirhash.c produces a different buf than the kernel, which leads to the problem that the hash calculated by TEA_transform() is a different one. Oh, dear. This is actually a kernel bug, because the on all other platforms, the TEA hash will be using a signed char --- and if you want filesystems to be portable between different systems (hint: we do), then all architectures should be using the same algorithm. And the vast majority of the systems out there are using signed chars. Unfortunately PowerPC decided to be different. :-( Fixing this is going to be painful, because if we fix the kernel to suddenly use signed chars in the TEA algorithm, like all other right thinking architectures (joke! joke!), then existing ext3 filesystems with directory hashing enabled will break. But given that e2fsck is doing it right, and the kernel is doing it wrong, we have the mismatch already. Sigh, this is going to be especially painful, given that all the major distributions (SLES, RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.) are now shipping with directory hashing enabled by default, and so this is going to impact a huge number of PowerPC Linux users and customers. OK, I think how are going to have to fix this is to define two new flags in the superblock, which indicates whether str2hashbuf is using signed or unsigned chars. If neither flag is set, then new kernels and new e2fsprogs will set the flag for the native signed/unsigned char convention, and assume that it is correct. I think this is only a PowerPC problem, but we'll probably need to do a quick check of all of the other architectures. Paul, since you're the PowerPC maintainer, I figured I'd better cc you. The second pass is way better. I compared the Ubuntu packaging byte by byte with yours for compatibility reasons, and you have nicer descriptions, and packaging now. Do a recursive grep on the source to get a list of copyright years, and at it at the top of copyright. Done. I Noticed a small problem with the version of the LGPL which I addressed. Ok A doubt: I did not find this condition into Debian Policy. Is required by Debian Policy or your Policy :) ? It's a requirement of US copyright laws IIRC, and it's a thing that the Debian ftpmasters check, but it's not very strict. It's best to have it. Ok. Real life, not doc life :) This makes it a bit harder for me to review the delta between your package and upstream for example. Your approach is more elegant, I know. But I feel me more comfortable so. In future, maybe I change. This seems fixed now. You are right. I'm working in new upstream source release, without repack it. Ok 5) Package: libiec61883-0-dev Provides: libiec61883-dev Conflicts: libiec61883-dev I see no reason why you would want to do this in Debian, particularly since the Ubuntu package is named libiec61883-dev, this seems to introduce an incompatibility. Could you explain why you want this name? Looks like more safe. See it: http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html#id271662 What do you think about? I changed it to be libiec61883-dev. I think it's ok to use libiec61883-dev for the first version of the API, but I didn't have the time to think too long about it and I wanted to retain compatibility wiht Ubuntu. We can switch to this scheme with the next API change. Ok I'm working in new upstream source release without repack it. When OK, I say you. It was nicely packaged, really. On the other hand older SSL-related bugs in KDE's bugzilla sugests that it uses libpsi for jabber. Bug#387924: Not just 2.4
I ran reportbug 3.30 under Python 2.3 today and got essentially the same memory problem, so it's not just 2.4 doing it. My immediate guess is that the garbage collector isn't able to clean things up until the parser objects are deleted. I will try to narrow this down to a reasonable test case and report it to Python upstream. That way, the user is encouraged to use the newer stage1 but can continue to the older stage1 at their own risk. I think the warning patch and the proposed patch to the stage1 installation are disjoint so both can be put in concurrently. Regards, Kapil. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Upstream do not guarantee that it is binary compatible between updates. That is the reason why I have not done that. In fact some of it should maybe not be installed at all in the Debian system. Do you create something that actually use these files? This may have changed but it was like this a year ago at least. Bug#390083: k3b gives misleading warning mesages re cdrecord and cdrdao
Package: k3b Version: 0.12.17-2+b1 Severity: normal k3b detects that cdrecord and cdrdao do not have suid set and prompts user to change their permissions using k3bsetup (see message below). Is this still necessary? If it is, then perhaps it would be better to suggest using dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord and then seting suid. It's generally better to use debconf for system administration. Also, is cdrdao really needed any more? Does k3b use it at all? Best, slaven -- cdrecord will be run without root privileges It is highly recommended to configure cdrecord to run with root privileges. Only then cdrecord runs with high priority which increases the overall stability of the burning process. Apart from that it allows changing the size of the used burning buffer. A lot of user problems could be solved this way. This is also true when using SuSE's resmgr. Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem. cdrdao will be run without root privileges It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root privileges to increase the overall stability of the burning process.
