Bug#389772: e2fsprogs: e2fsck produces broken htree on ppc

2006-09-28 Thread Theodore Tso
On Wed, Sep 27, 2006 at 02:22:51PM +0200, Jörg Sommer wrote:
 Package: e2fsprogs
 Version: 1.39-1
 Severity: important

you set the compiler option -fsigned-char, but on PowerPC the default is
unsigned char. This makes the kernel uses unsigned and e2fsck uses signed
 chars.

In the case of an 8 bit character, str2hashbuf() in lib/ext2fs/dirhash.c
produces a different buf than the kernel, which leads to the problem that
the hash calculated by TEA_transform() is a different one.

Oh, dear. This is actually a kernel bug, because the on all other
platforms, the TEA hash will be using a signed char --- and if you
want filesystems to be portable between different systems (hint: we
do), then all architectures should be using the same algorithm. And
the vast majority of the systems out there are using signed chars.
Unfortunately PowerPC decided to be different. :-(

Fixing this is going to be painful, because if we fix the kernel to
suddenly use signed chars in the TEA algorithm, like all other right
thinking architectures (joke! joke!), then existing ext3 filesystems
with directory hashing enabled will break.

But given that e2fsck is doing it right, and the kernel is doing it
wrong, we have the mismatch already. Sigh, this is going to be
especially painful, given that all the major distributions (SLES,
RHEL, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.) are now shipping with directory hashing
enabled by default, and so this is going to impact a huge number of
PowerPC Linux users and customers.

OK, I think how are going to have to fix this is to define two new
flags in the superblock, which indicates whether str2hashbuf is using
signed or unsigned chars. If neither flag is set, then new kernels
and new e2fsprogs will set the flag for the native signed/unsigned
char convention, and assume that it is correct. I think this is only
a PowerPC problem, but we'll probably need to do a quick check of all
of the other architectures.

Paul, since you're the PowerPC maintainer, I figured I'd better cc
you. Does this sound sane to you?

When trying to dist-upgrade aptitude tries to upgrade libgtk-perl and

maybe the bug should be filed against dvdrip, that seems to be the only app.

2006-09-28 Thread Marcio Teixeira

On 9/28/06, Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi again,

Now to reply to your questions:

On Thu, Sep 28, 2006, Marcio Teixeira wrote:
Perhaps you meant to replace libraw1394-8-dev with libraw1394-dev in
  your debian/control?
 Yes. Done.

Actually, there were still the Depends to update.

Ok.

Anyway, the Ubuntu packaging has some issues, so it's fine to rewrite
it. You did more mistakes though. ;-)
 Ok.

The second pass is way better. I compared the Ubuntu packaging byte by
byte with yours for compatibility reasons, and you have nicer
 descriptions, and packaging now.

Do a recursive grep on the source to get a list of copyright years, and
at it at the top of copyright.
 Done.

I Noticed a small problem with the version of the LGPL which I
 addressed.

Ok

A doubt: I did not find this condition into Debian Policy. Is required
by Debian Policy or your Policy :) ?

It's a requirement of US copyright laws IIRC, and it's a thing that the
Debian ftpmasters check, but it's not very strict. It's best to have
 it.

Ok. Real life, not doc life :)

This makes it a bit harder for me to review the delta between your
  package and upstream for example.
Your approach is more elegant, I know. But I feel me more comfortable
so. In future, maybe I change.

 This seems fixed now.

You are right. I'm working in new upstream source release, without
repack it. Can you say me where is 70_relibtoolize patches?

 If you checkout
 svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-gnome/desktop/unstable, you should
 see:
 bee% find . -iname \*relibtoolize\*
 ./gedit/debian/patches/70_relibtoolize.patch
 ./at-spi/debian/patches/70_relibtoolize.patch
 ./libart-lgpl/debian/patches/001_relibtoolize.patch

Ok. I wiil take a look

 etc.

 My procedure is at:
http://people.dooz.org/~lool/debian/relibtoolize

Ok. I will try follow it.

  4) Debhelper compatibility level 4. 4 is slightly deprecated, 5 is
supposed to be the norm, especially for new packages. But I'm fine
  with this.
 Ok. updated to Level 5

You need to build-dep on debhelper = 5 to have it though.

Ok

  5) Package: libiec61883-0-dev
  Provides: libiec61883-dev
  Conflicts: libiec61883-dev
I see no reason why you would want to do this in Debian, particularly
since the Ubuntu package is named libiec61883-dev, this seems to
introduce an incompatibility. Could you explain why you want this
  name?
Looks like more safe. See it:

http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html#id271662
 What do you think about?

I changed it to be libiec61883-dev. I think it's ok to use
libiec61883-dev for the first version of the API, but I didn't have the
time to think too long about it and I wanted to retain compatibility
 wiht Ubuntu.

We can switch to this scheme with the next API change.

Ok

I'm working in new upstream source release without repack it. When OK,
 I say you.

 It was nicely packaged, really.

(Except I would remove the comment from the watch file :-P)

:)

Bug#390069: sysvinit: fsck of /tmp/rootdev fails on /tmp mounted nodev

2006-09-28 Thread Jameson Rollins
Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.86.ds1-20
Severity: important

Upon rebooting my machine today (etch) after many weeks of uptime, the boot
failed while trying to fsck the block device /tmp/rootdev. The device could not
be fsck'd because my /tmp filesystem was mounted nodev.

It looks to me like /tmp/rootdev might be created by /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh,
and maybe the problem is related to this recent change?:

-
sysvinit (2.86.ds1-19) unstable; urgency=low

...
  * Rewrite checkroot.sh to not use lazy umount and a private tmpfs,
and keep the tmpfs mounted on /tmp/ as long as checkroot.sh need
it. It seem that fsck did not like relative device paths.
(Closes: #386347, #386699)
...

 -- Petter Reinholdtsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 9 Sep 2006 20:12:47 +0200
-

The problem was temporarily fixed by modifying my /etc/fstab to mount /tmp with
dev. However, I do *not* think this is a suitable situation since I believe
that /tmp should be mounted nodev. In either case, it seems like a bug to be
depending on /tmp mounted dev, unless there is something I'm not understanding
out how /tmp should be mounted.

Please let me know if there's any other help or information I can provide.
Thank you immeasurably for maintaining.

jamie.

Bug#390071: kopete: doesn't validate some SSL-signed servers

2006-09-28 Thread Ratiu Petru
Package: kopete
Version: 4:3.5.4-2
Severity: normal

I noticed this when connecting via jabber with SSL both on jabber.org
and my private server which both happen to have CACert-signed
certificates. At login time kopete announces that the CA is
invalid (without offering details, but that's a separate bug).

I have the ca-certificates package installed (with CACert's root
certificate) and I also imported it into kde (it shows up under control
center/security/crypto/ssl signers and I can navigate
https://www.cacert.org/ without warnings).

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122146 suggests that KDE's chain of
trust should be enough, but apparently it's not. On the other hand older
SSL-related bugs in KDE's bugzilla sugests that it uses libpsi for
jabber. I had to jump to a different set of hoops to fix this issue
under psi ( added an xml under /usr/share/psi/certs ), however I haven't
found anything similar for kopete.

Bug#387924: Not just 2.4

2006-09-28 Thread Chris Lawrence
I ran reportbug 3.30 under Python 2.3 today and got essentially the
same memory problem, so it's not just 2.4 doing it. My immediate
guess is that the garbage collector isn't able to clean things up
until the parser objects are deleted.

I will try to narrow this down to a reasonable test case and report it
to Python upstream.

For example, when running 'apt-listbugs list psi':

However, debugging ruby scripts is way beyond me, so I'm requesting for

It's probably also worth mentioning that not all packages trigger that,
'apt-listbugs list apt' behaves normally, for example. It seems that it
only crashes on an empty buglist (or whatever is printed after
fetching in debug mode.

Sadly, when I was testing the new release, the 3D programs which I was

some of the segfaults, but there was still new ones. Also few days later
the tdfx xorg driver started crashing the X server (#388998). I've fixed
the later, it's waiting for an upload. I'll go back to testing with the
latest mesa during this week.

It's a shame, this is one of my longest standing RC bugs. :(

Package: hdparm

Severity: normal

Hi,

Whilst playing around with hdparm -C on some IDE drives connected via
IDE-USB adapters, it became apparent that it was reporting standby, when
it really should have been reporting unknown. This is apparent when
running hdparm under strace. It gets an ENOTTY back from the ioctl()
call, and then goes on to report the drive being in a standby state. It
should, according to the manpage, be reporting unknown.

regards

Andrew

Bug#345931: A patch closing #345931, verified against debian testing

Right but if it's not too hard and complex might be good.

I think that it may be a good idea to plug-in a warning message
as well when this incompatibility is found (during the installation
phase only).

That way, the user is encouraged to use the newer stage1 but can
continue to the older stage1 at their own risk.

I think the warning patch and the proposed patch to the stage1
installation are disjoint so both can be put in concurrently.

Bug#386497: confirming here, also with serial console

2006-09-28 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
Hi folks--

i can also duplicate this bug on a mixed sarge/sarge-backports machine
with a serial console.

I haven't had the chance yet to try the workaround jan wagner has
suggested. The errors from the console look like this:

Bug#362684: is not resolved

2006-09-28 Thread Berg, Michael
gaim 1:2.0.0+beta3.1-3 has entered unstable, but gaim can not be upgraded
without uninstalling gaim-otr.

gaim-otr 3.0.0-2 has the following in its depends list
gaim (= 1:1.5), gaim ( 1:2.0)

Attempting to install both gaim and gaim-otr results in the following error
message: gaim-otr: Depends: gaim ( 1:2.0) but 1:2.0.0+beta3.1-3 is to be
installed

So this bug is no longer resolved.

Bug#390006: Creating a util-vserver-dev package

 Hello,

How about splitting the util-vserver package in two packages,
 util-vserver and util-vserver-dev which contains:
 /usr/include/vserver.h
 /usr/lib/libvserver.a
 /usr/lib/libvserver.so

I have thought about it myself, but there is a big but. Upstream
do not guarantee that it is binary compatible between updates.
That is the reason why I have not done that.

In fact some of it should maybe not be installed at all in the
Debian system.

Do you create something that actually use these files?

This may have changed but it was like this a year ago at least.

// Ola

 Best regards,

 Vincent

Bug#390083: k3b gives misleading warning mesages re cdrecord and cdrdao

2006-09-28 Thread Slaven
Package: k3b
Version: 0.12.17-2+b1
Severity: normal

k3b detects that cdrecord and cdrdao do not have suid set and prompts
user to change their permissions using k3bsetup (see message below). Is
this still necessary? If it is, then perhaps it would be better to suggest using
dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord and then seting suid. It's generally better to
use debconf for system administration.

Also, is cdrdao really needed any more? Does k3b use it at all?

Best,
slaven

cdrecord will be run without root privileges
It is highly recommended to configure cdrecord to run with root
privileges. Only then cdrecord runs with high priority which increases
the overall stability of the burning process. Apart from that it allows
changing the size of the used burning buffer. A lot of user problems
could be solved this way. This is also true when using SuSE's resmgr.
Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem.
