Bug#422615: doesnt support kde in etch?
package: localization-config version: 1.01 Hi, in conffiles.d/kde.postinst is the following code: # Define the version map for kdebase my %vermap = ( '2.2.2-14.7', = { RELEASE = 'woody' }, '4:3.2.2-1', = { RELEASE = 'sarge' } ); Which then makes sure that, conffiles.d/$RELEASE/kde is executed. There is also a conffiles.d/etch/kde but as I understand, it's never executed. I noticed, because localization-config in debian-edu maps '3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6' to etch and I wondered what will happen, when there is an upgrade of kdebase. To me it looks like localization-config then needs to be updated as well - is that correct? Or is the above copied code just not been used anymore? Then please retitle the bug to remove unused code ;) http://ftp.skolelinux.org/skolelinux/pool/local/l/localization-config/localization-config_1.01.0.edu.etch.1+svn33101.dsc regards, Holger pgpDGUxO1ybZK.pgp Description: PGP signature

This is not entirely true, you can always use a hook to setup the partitions manually with a small shell script (see the guide on more for this and have a look at http://www.layer-acht.org/fai/fai-on-powerpc/ there you'll find a partition.POWERPC hook) Without introduction of the right partitioning method fai should be removed from debian stable's alpha-tree FAI is an architecture all package, it's not existant as a alpha package :) You're right though, that setup_harddisk is a bad hack. This is a known issue for long but so far, noone did the work to really fix this. regards, Holger pgpUyvgwGL7Yv.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#326486: mouseemu doesn't block all connected mice
package: mouseemu version: 0.15-2 Hi, I installed mouseemu and the trackpad blocking feature does not seem to work with all my mouse devices. I'm running sarge with a 2.6.12 kernel udev on a thinkpad r51 (which has a trackpad and the thinkpad nipple mouse), with an external mouse (and keyboard) connected. Only the external mouse and the nipple mouse get blocked, but not the trackpad - which is the device I want to be blocked at most :-) In /dev/input there is mice, mouse0, mouse1, mouse2 and uinput. regards, Holger pgp9Y7iy4XM4N.pgp Description: PGP signature

While quite familiar with FAI by now, I did not investigate much in this subject yet. Has anybody on the list attempted something like that yet? What would be the best approach then? Can it be done by calling /usr/sbin/fai at all? There are two options you have here: I. use XEN to install the chroot 1) install and configure XEN on the host 2) do a 'normal' fai installation using XEN+nfsroot II. a real chroot install = chroot-installs should work in principle, but are not carefully checked. we chose to disable them for the moment. If you are really adventurous and want to try something risky: 0) do a backup of all your data on the machine chosen to host the chroots (or choose a machine where data-loss doesn't matter) 1) edit /usr/share/fai/subroutines, comment out the return in the safety check in line 253 2) set FAI_ROOT in /etc/fai/fai.conf to the intended destination directory 3) disable task_partition under all circumstances (otherwise it will destroy your running system) 4) pray it will work= 5) pray it will work 6) run '/usr/sbin/fai install' NOTE: I have succeeded in this once in the last year with my fai fork pfai, which has been merged into fai now, but as much development has happened in fai during that time, I don't know if this will work now. thanks Henning! :-) Please don't forget to include XEN in the documentaion. Bug#312296: don't try to install boot loaders on softupdates
package: fai version: 2.8.4 severity: important Hi, in the simple examples, the class GRUB is defined for every I386 machine. If disk_var.sh does not exist (because the machine was not installed with fai...), running a fai softupdate will overwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst with wrong contents which won't boot the machine. This is related to #312296 - and explains why I don't like the proposed patch there. I propose to change the last line of /usr/share/doc/fai/examples/simple/class/50-host-classes to ifclass I386 ifclass FAI_INSTALL echo GRUB regards, Holger pgpSzzLSPtfMq.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#313440: Info received (was patch)
Hi, it's even worse ;-) That patch doesnt work at all as $FAI_ACTION is not defined when defining the classes ;-) It'll have to go into /usr/sbin/fai or /usr/bin/fai-class directly. An ugly workaround in 10-base-classes would be # define a class named after $FAI_ACTION [ $ROOTCMD ] echo FAI_INSTALL [ ! $ROOTCMD ] echo FAI_SOFTUPDATE regards, Holger pgp9xyGiMkRQ4.pgp Description: PGP signature

But I agree the current implementation in FAI not ideal, but my proposed changes were not accepted into FAI ;( You proposed this hook or something else ? $FAI/hooks/prepareapt.DEFAULT please not as DEFAULT. Bug#313069: fai softupdate on systems-not-installed-with-fai destroy grub/menu.lst
package: fai version: 2.8.4 severity: important Hi, scripts/GRUB/10-setup fcopies an invalid /boot/grub/menu.lst and the fcopy-postinst script fixes this file, by running grub-installer with the data from $diskvar (/etc/fai/diskvar.sh) - which doesn't exist on systems which were not installed with fai. The easy workaround would be to test, if $diskvar exists before fcopying /boot/grub/menu.lst. But this doesn't work with fcopy -r / - therefore I propose a special class which only gets defined on fresh installs and move /files/boot/grub/menu.lst/GRUB to that class. Another option would be to create $diskvar based on /proc/* and/or menu.lst/lilo.conf/yaboot.cfg before it is overwritten... - but I guess thats much more error-prone... You could also sell it as a feature that softupdates doesnt touch the bootloader... regards, Holger P.S.: #312296 is related pgpNEiGHjs1n4.pgp Description: PGP signature

I've just come home from the skolelinux developer meeting in Bergen where I investigated the possibilities of using fai's softupdates capabilities for skolelinux installations. One of the conclusions is this bug-report :-) It would be very useful to have two more default classes, FAI_INSTALL and FAI_SOFTUPDATE - I find the prefix FAI_ also useful. To finally answer the question of this thread: install mtop after the installation, either by running fai softupdate after the install (and adding a script to the class that installs mysql which only gets executed on softupdates (you could for example check on $target..) or by creating a script then gets run only by the very first boot of the new system. It should make debian-edu-config installable even when svk is broken. Yup. But not having unresolvable recommends is still a release goal for Lenny... The changes are in svn, and we should upload a new version of debian-edu-config when etcinsvk make it into the Debian archive. Or perhaps we should upload it right away, to cut the hard dependency? I'd say so. regards, Holger pgpWbrTwjZCGw.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#487866: been there, experienced this too
Hi, I've been thinking some weeks whether I should add to this what I'm going to add now. Also due to any lack of reply of Thomas to this bug I have decided to speak up now. The normal policy for working with the fai svn, is that noone is allowed to commit to trunk except Thomas. The occasional commit which fixes a typo is ok, but thats about it. So normally development from other happens in people branches. I cannot really say, how the changelog/copyrights are treated when code is copied from there to trunk. (A quick search for hank (- (t| T)ank(s)) in debian/changelog reveals one Thanks and if you search for by you find one occasion where attribution is given.) Besides that there is one generic THANKS file which lists very different contributors but not their contribution(s). I can share my frustration about the few occasions when I was allowed to fix stuff in trunk. There were the commits r3585 r3598 and r4591, which mostly fixed simple packaging issues. Which I correctly attributed to myself in debian/changelog. This attribution was later removed by Thomas. I have no idea why. If he wants to be the only one in changelog, he should not let others do the work nor take their work. And of course, this mail is not the first time I mention this. I have mentioned this to Thomas privatly before previously, but havent insisted on this, because it is somewhat minor (I mostly want fai to work and it usually works great.). On the one hand, on the other hand its pretty discouraging to see ones distributions not acknowledged. disappointed, Holger pgpxyY6eWHHaB.pgp Description: PGP signature
