Bug#344392: lsb: please explain versioned build-depends on sarge dpkg-dev
Package: lsb Severity: wishlist lsb has a versioned build-depends on a dpkg-dev package version that is not in sarge. lsb seems, however, to build fine on sarge, and backported lsb-base works reasonably well on sarge in case of an lsb'ized init script. Since we _will_ live with backports, and lsb'ized init scripts are becoming increasingly common, the apparently unnecessary requirement to backport _dpkg_ just to be able to backport a package with an lsb'ized init script is a pain. Please document _why_ the versioned build depends is really needed, and consider adapting the package to make it unnecessary. Bug#344755: kernel-package: hooks should not write to STDOUT discourages grub usage
Package: kernel-package Version: 10.018 Severity: wishlist Hi, NEWS.Debian for 10.023 says that any hook scrips called from the kernel hooks shuold not write to STDOUT. The issue should be fixed by recompiling the client against a set of the libraries, and should affect only the 2.2.5-3 version under i386. Notice, also that the package has an undeclared dependency on libssl0.9.7 (the binary is linked against that one). I will try to rebuild it in a clean environment and see if I can get rid of the libssl0.9.7 dependencies that way. Other nessus-related packages (libnasl and nessus-plugins) might need to be recompiled too. After seeing Javier's message on the nessus mailing list (http://mail.nessus.org/pipermail/nessus/2005-December/msg00244.html, which points to #338006, which is a bug in openssl 0.9.8), I tried rebuilding nessus and nessusd in a clean sid chroot with only openssl 0.9.7 installed, as Javier suggested doing. Because of Hadmut's message in this bug, I rebuild libnasl as well. The resulting packages naturally only depend on libssl0.9.7, and seem to work fine. This might be a workaround. The re-built packages for sid are available on http://zg.debian.zugschlus.de/zg/pool/main/libnasl and http://zg.debian.zugschlus.de/zg/pool/main/nessus-core Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. I had been trying to find the time to write the manpages etc which are required to make the packages lintian clean (I'll be honest: I doubt I'm ever going to get round to it...). I guess that's only a minor bug which can get fixed in time. There is also one more bug: The packages seem to ignore version suffixes, to modules built for a 2.6.14.5-darren end up in /lib/modules/2.6.14.5 instead of /lib/modules/2.6.14.5-darren, which of course makes them hard to find. If you guys think that doesn't matter too much then I think the current packages are in a state where they could be uploaded, assuming Eduard is still willing to sponsor them. If you can figure out a way of supporting debconf, and other hook scripts that use debconf, and also support scripts that write to stdout, well, we'll talk. After issueing the perl equivalent to db_stop, it should be safe to dump out the buffer contents. You have, however, already indicated that you are reluctant to implement a buffer scheme like that. Please at least offer the possibility to pass parameters to hook scripts (so that update-grub could get a --silent option), or - even better - to use a shell for hook script invocation so that constructs like postinst_hook = /sbin/update-grub /dev/null 21 become possible by forcibly silencing the hook script until the hook script has been adapted. Thanks for your consideration. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. According to http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00010.html, the DEB_*_ARCH_CPU variables only contain the CPU string as opposed to DEB_*_ARCH which also contain the OS string on non-Linux. Bug#331499: dokuwiki: multisite support
Package: dokuwiki Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream Hi, I'd like dokuwiki to have multisite support. That way, one could have the Debian package installed, and say in the configuration dokuwiki for site1.domain1.example.com has its data in /var/local/dokuwiki/site1, and dokuwiki for site2.domain2.example.com has its data in /var/local/dokuwiki/site2. The two wikis would be completely separate, but run with the same code so that only one installation of dokuwiki would be necessary. Since I realize that this is an upstream issue (and it has been discussed numerous times on the upstream mailing list, but without persistent result), I am tagging this bug upstream. Well, my personal preference would be not to worry about this until it becomes a real issue (that future error message may be descriptive enough, after all). Adduser has _a lot_ of installations and is mainly used by maintainer scripts. Thus, _a lot_ of people are bound to see error messages generated by adduser and are bound to be confused by them. Or you can just add 2/dev/null to the nscd -i invocation. That will also kill real error messages. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. Bug#121262: bash: Some *.dpkg-old files remain in /etc/skel
user [EMAIL PROTECTED] usertag + patch-appreciated tags #121262 help thanks On Mon, Nov 26, 2001 at 06:23:51PM +0100, Adrian Bunk wrote: I changed the .bash_profile and .bashrc files in /etc/skel some time ago. I noticed that since they are conffiles there are now after an upgrade some *.dpkg-old files in /etc/skel and depending on how you answer dpkg's question whether to update these files you get *.dpkg-dist files otherwise. These files in /etc are not a problem, the only annoying thing is that these files are also copied into the home of every newly created user. So it should be configurable in adduser to have a regexp or wildcard list of files which should not be copied over from /etc/skel. This surely is possible, patch appreciated. I do not have a problem with having bugs rotting away in the BTS. Usertags will help in sorting out the bugs. Maybe time for another call for help for adduser (IIRC, you already posted some, Marc). Yes, there was response about a rewrite in C, but the author of that rewrite decided to go a way I am not too fond about (not calling any backends but doing the work himself), and the effort seems to have kind of stalled. I have been receiving a lot of cleanup patches from Jörg Hoh, and he has received commit privileges to the SVN repository yesterday, but he doesn't intend to become DD in the foreseeable future. I'm really sad that some of our key packages cannot receive enough attention while we keep getting bunch of crappy new packages noone cares about, in the archive. I am guilty of that as well, but I took over adduser because it needed work to do the job I wanted it to do - so that approach kind of worked. If we go this way, I intend to post a message to -devel (or even -devel-announce) with these ideas (probably not the crappy packages part)...and do my best to have it published in DWN. Go ahead. Bug#316606: fixed in cron-apt 0.4.1
On Sun, Oct 09, 2005 at 01:36:16PM +0200, Marc Haber wrote: Unfortunately, aptitude is buggy regarding --assume-yes. cron-apt's default rules already use --assume-yes (abbreviated as -y), which triggers aptitude bug #332885, the original cause of _this_ bug here. #332885 is fixed in aptitude 0.3.4, which is in experimental, and fixes the urgency of this bug, as it only breaks cron-apt and not the entire system. Additionally, aptitude 0.3.5 (which is not yet uploaded) will have an option to ignore trust-violation warnings, so that cron-apt can safely document -o aptitude::Cmdline::ignore-trust-violations=yes for aptitude, and this will work with aptitude 0.3.5. Suggested new config contents: # General apt options that will be passed to all APTCOMMAND calls. # Use -o quiet instead of -q for aptitude compatibility. # OPTIONS=-o quiet=1 # You can for example add an alternative sources.list file here. # OPTIONS=-o quiet=1 -o Dir::Etc::SourceList=/etc/apt/security.sources.list # If you want to allow unauthenticated and untrusted packages add the # following to your options directive. # OPTIONS=-o quiet=1 -o APT::Get::AllowUnauthenticated=true -o aptitude::Cmdline::ignore-trust-violations=yes # This will only work with aptitude = 0.3.5 # The --assume-yes option will answer yes to almost all questions. This # is not very safe, and can fill up your /tmp file system (#316606) due # to an aptitude bug (#332885) which shows if --assume-yes is used and # untrusted packages would be installed. It is, it will move to unstable asap. The chage-fixed adduser is going into etch tonight, and I plan to ditch that branch really soon now. The version currently in experimental is the _near_ future. I'm actually a bit reluctant because of the new string with part of the GPL which, imho, should maybe not be translatable That's actually not a new string. gettextization of that string was missing, which has shown up during the code refactoring. Something else: I think about adding adduser to the D-I level 5 translations, that is translation of programs which are part of each and every Debian install. This is likely to trigger a lot of translation updates (remember exim4...:-)). Would you wish me to find you someone to help in l10n maintenance? Committing new translations isn't too much work, and Jörg, who did most of the code refactoring work and is also working on the test suite, has become a committer to the Alioth project this weekend. I cannot reproduce this. Even with a very simple config file: database=file:/var/lib/aide/aide.db database_out=file:/var/lib/aide/aide.db.new gzip_dbout=yes Binlib = p+i+n+u+g+s+b+m+c+md5+sha1 / Binlib !/proc/kcore aide processes /proc just fine without segfaulting. looking at the source tells me: in line 312 of gen_list.c the result code of the readlink is not caught, the next malloc(-1+1) 'works fine' (does not reserve any space but does not return NULL either, which would have been caught), and in line 319 things are going down, finally: strncpy(into_the_zero_sized_space,from_somewhere,-1)... That looks like the code which is now in lines 478ff, and now is: len=readlink(fil-filename,lnktmp,_POSIX_PATH_MAX+1); if(len == -1){ error(0,readlink failed in add_file_to_list(): %d,%s\n ,errno, strerror(errno)); free(lnktmp); free(fil-filename); free(fil); *addok=RETFAIL; return listp; } lnkbuf=(char*)malloc(len+1); Looks like the issue has been addressed in aide 0.10. forwarded #143495 http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=aide-devel Hi, this is bug report #143495, filed to the Debian BTS a few years ago. Does this behavior still hold for the current code? Greetings Marc - Forwarded message from Robert Bihlmeyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] - From: Robert Bihlmeyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Bug#143495: aide: should output errors on stderr To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Robert Bihlmeyer [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 18 Apr 2002 20:55:27 +0200 User-Agent: Gnus/5.0808 (Gnus v5.8.8) XEmacs/21.4 (Common Lisp) Package: aide Severity: minor Version: 0.7-11 After experiencing db corruption I got the following in the report mail: Output of the daily AIDE run: Not enough parameters in db:12879. Trying to continue. Newline exptexted in database. Readin until end of line Skipped value 0 db_char2line():Error while reading database AIDE produced no errors. Looks a bit strange to tell me there are no errors. As it seems this stems from aide not properly outputting errors to stderr, but to stdout instead. -- Robbe - End forwarded message - -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. Bug#146112: [Debian minor issue #146112] aide: detailed output formated to 83 columns
forwarded #146112 http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=aide-devel thanks Hi, this is Debian bug #146112, http://bugs.debian.org/146112, which is still valid for aide 0.11-rc1. Is it possible to have this fixed? Greetings Marc Forwarded message From: Robert Bihlmeyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Debian Bug Tracking System [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: aide: detailed output formated to 83 columns Date: Tue, 7 May 2002 09:20:24 +0200 (CEST) Package: aide Version: 0.8-2 Severity: minor In the daily aide report mail I get, in the detailed section, most lines are extended with spaces up to 83 columns. They should be 80 columns at most ... unless the information in them is really longer (but most stuff like inode, size, ctime fit comfortably in a standard line). Bug#289171: aide: please add an option to quicky check for config file syntax
On Fri, Jan 07, 2005 at 05:43:20PM +0100, Marc Haber wrote: it would be desireable to be able to check a config file for correct syntax, returning a non-zero exit code on an incorrect config file. This is already partly implemented. Aide takes a --config-check parameter. However, this doesn't work as advertised (doesn't detect some errors which are flagged as such on aide --check), and it is not documented in the man page. Bug#335462: bugs.debian.org: please add options to handle bug report to bugreport.cgi generated web page
Package: bugs.debian.org Severity: wishlist After sending a gazillion of messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] yesterday, I had the idea that things would be much easier if the web page generated by bugreport.cgi had a form at its bottom that would allow easy operation on bugs. I'd like to see the following options: * set tags (either with checkboxes or a text field) * set usertags for user (two text fields) * modify severity (drop-down list) * retitle (text field) * set owner (text field) * set blocker (text field) * merge (text field) * reassign (text field) * close (text field for version number) * comment (text field to be put in the message body after thanks) That form would then fire off a mail message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] doing the requested changes. This scheme can even be unauthenticated since it would not be any worse than e-mail messages sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Optionally, Accounts could be used to prevent abuse. Bug#224301: [Adduser-devel] Bug#224301: Some thoughts about this bug report
On Mon, Oct 24, 2005 at 11:51:56PM +0200, Denis Barbier wrote: On Sat, Oct 22, 2005 at 09:02:28PM +0200, Marc Haber wrote: Of course this comment may be improved ;) You need to call xgettext with the -c flag so that comments are inserted into PO files. that would be XGETTEXT = xgettext -c in po/Makefile, right? Done. Hmmm, I prefer adding -c after $(XGETTEXT). Changed. There is another glitch with po/Makefile: adduser-3.76/po$ touch ../adduser adduser-3.76/po$ make adduser.pot xgettext -c -L Perl -kgtx -o adduser.pot ../adduser Strings from deluser are then discarded. Patch attached. Applied. Yes, but xgettext still displays a warning. In AdduserCommon.pm, you can replace sub gtx { return gettext( join , @_); } by sub gtx { return gettext(shift): } to remove this warning. Calling gtx with a list is wrong, because only the first string is extracted into the POT file (see the attached patch, the 2nd string from deluser is not in adduser.pot). Applied. Here is a patch. I tested it, but of course it may introduce bugs, please review it carefully ;) I applied the changes, but left gtx intact. Please reconsider this suggestion. Frankly, I see no reason to keep this wrapper. If you do not want localized messages, run your scripts with LC_ALL=C. It is consistent with the way gettext is used in C programs, and it allows gettext to be disabled completely, which might be an advantage on low memory systems. I have committed your changes and will upload 3.78 later today. Can you then please take a new look at the package? Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers.
