So it is not exploitable to execute any code or something, but it's still a nasty DoS, particularly in Cups. Bug#350093: libfinance-quote-perl: binary-indep files in /usr/lib
Package: libfinance-quote-perl Version: 1.08-1 Severity: serious Justification: Violates perl policy The libfinance-quote-perl package is installing binary-independent files into /usr/lib when it should actually put them into /usr/share. For information on how to build perl packages that conform with policy please see the Debian perl policy document at: http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/perl-policy/ When building a package you can use lintian to help spot errors like this. Also the package has this line in the debian/control: Architecture: any which is incorrect, I think the further line specifying 'all' might be working as an override but this is probably not reliable behaviour. I notice you have not updated this package since July 2003. Having looked through the current list of bugs, especially requests for new upstream versions to fix important bugs, I would ask you to seriously consider whether you are still interested in maintaining this package. If not then please orphan the package so someone else can take it on. Hi Hilmar! Hilmar Preusse [2006-01-27 9:56 +0100]: This is precisely the fix that is required to avoid endless loops with prematurely ending PDF files (CVE-2005-3625). So it is not exploitable to execute any code or something, but it's still a nasty DoS, particularly in Cups. So I would prefer to apply it, especially since it's such an easy and straightforward change. So, what is that now? - a security leak, which must be fixed - rather an inconvenience, which should be fixed? For CUPS it was a real DoS which must be fixed, but for tetex-bin it's just an inconvenience; there will be few systems which automatically process untrusted LaTeX documents with PDF files sent by remote attackers. Does that bug deserve still the severity critical? If not I propose to lower the severity to important, keep that bug open until the support for oldstable has ended and close the bug then. For now I mark that bug as not found in 2.0.2-30sarge4 and found in 1.0.7+20011202-7.7 . Works for me. Bug#331068: PNG crush NMU
Hello, The following remarks about my previous patch came up on the Debian QA mailing list. On Thu, 26 Jan 2006, Russ Allbery wrote: Ugh, that's not a very good solution. That means that the next time there's a security hole in zlib or libpng, which hasn't been uncommon, it may also affect pngcrush and someone has to remember to update it as well. This makes life much harder for the security team. And On Fri, 27 Jan 2006, Bas Zoetekouw wrote: Please don't do that, it will make everyone's live (en specifically those of the security team) much harder. I have prepared a new patch for pngcrush. The diff is attached. What it does is to add a source file (pngpf_for_crush.c) that contains some innocent looking functions from libpng which were declared PRIVATE in the recent version (1.2.8rel) of libpng. I agree that this is still a far from ideal solution but: a. The functions indeed appear to be quite innocent. In particular, these functions are built out of non PRIVATE functions and modify data structures that are non PRIVATE. b. The functions are copied verbatim from the latest libpng source but have essentially not changed from 2002 versions of the same functions. c. The size of this added file is less than 10K so it should be easy to check it for bugs or security holes in principle. d. With these changes, pngcrush builds (and works) based on the existing libpng-dev and zlib1g-dev packages. Bug#334639: Using MAKEDEV for creating fuse device?
* Bartosz Fenski aka fEnIo [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-01-24 16:03] : On Tue, Jan 24, 2006 at 02:03:04PM +0100, Frédéric Bothamy wrote: Rather than creating the fuse device by hand, it would be better to use MAKEDEV (when Bug#344728 is solved) to do it. That wouldn't be better. That's policy demand, and mentioned bug is the reason I didn't upload new version of fuse yet, cause I would violate policy doing it. Hello Bartosz, Thanks for the explanation, I hadn't noticed that you were the one submitting the bugreport on makedev. Do you know if the makedev maintainer is aware that there is an RC bug on fuse-utils due to this problem? Greetings, Fred
Bug#331068: PNG crush NMU
Hi Kapil, Kapil Hari Paranjape wrote: I have submitted a new patch report to the relevant bugs with an alternative solution. Let us see what the maintainer thinks of the new patch. Um, are you sure that there aren't any public functions in libpng to achieve the same? As a wild guess (really just an untested idea): Maybe a call to png_read_update_info could replace the call (and copying) of png_read_transform_info. That would eliminate ~ 1/3 of the patch. I didn't look into the other things, though. You might also consider asking on the png-mng-implement list. It looks like the current maintainer of libpng is also the author of pngcrush, so there might be a chance of getting some good advice there. Kind regards T. P.S.: I've CCed the bug and d-qa, please delete any CCs as you see fit. -- Thomas Viehmann, http://thomas.viehmann.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Incidentally, are you the sparc experimental buildd maintainer? If so, could you answer this question: nsis runs itself in order to perform some tests during the build process. As nsis is a compiler for windows installers, and produces .exe files, the results of the tests can't be tested without access to the resulting files. Do you think it would it be acceptable for me to run some commands in debian/rules after the tests that would put the .exe files into a tarball and cat the tarball to the build logs using uuencode? -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Sure go ahead and distribute them. I don't think there was even any restriction in distributing the pdf's at least not from my side (they have been in the tex collections in separate trees anyway). Bug#347703: Me too: Evolution eats all CPU on startup, can be fixed by moving .evolution
Package: evolution Version: 2.4.2.1-1 Followup-For: Bug #347703 After the upgrade to evolution-2.4.2.1-1 I noticed this problem as described in the original report (all CPU used during Checking folder consistency on startup). I was able to get evolution back on its feet again by renaming .evolution (thus losing all the stuff stored On This Computer), but the fix didn't last -- after 10 days (about 2000-3000 mail messages processed) it recurred. Once again, I've been able to get evolution working by renaming .evolution but I can't keep doing this forever -- I've already got at least 3 Sent folders I'll have to merge once this bug is fixed :( I use a Maildir mailbox tree to actually store my mail, which is delivered directly to me by postfix. Bug#350112: nsis_2.14-1(sparc/experimental): FTBFS: misconstructed commandline
On Fri, Jan 27, 2006 at 09:51:10PM +0800, Paul Wise wrote: Incidentally, are you the sparc experimental buildd maintainer? If so, could you answer this question: nsis runs itself in order to perform some tests during the build process. As nsis is a compiler for windows installers, and produces .exe files, the results of the tests can't be tested without access to the resulting files. Do you think it would it be acceptable for me to run some commands in debian/rules after the tests that would put the .exe files into a tarball and cat the tarball to the build logs using uuencode? Please don't, that's just plain ugly. Just send me a mail which files you need and I will trigger the build manually and make them available to you afterwards. Since the experimental buildd is idle most of the time this isn't a problem. Bug#318123: Security bug in xlockmore
Hi Joey Martin Schulze wrote: Alexander Wirt wrote: Hi Michael, this security bug in xlockmore is still present in all xlockmore versions in the archive and is open for now 190 days. In the meantime we organized a CVE number and a patch that fixes that problem. But still no reaction from you. I know that aren't MIA at all, because I have seen some activity from you since then. But I think this bug needs some time from you at all. I know that xlockmore is upstream dead and has really awfull code, but I you don't want to maintain it anymore orphan it or remove it from the archive. I have to admit that I don't share the oppinion of the maintainer and hence are preparing an update with the patch Elmar Hoffmann thankfully provided. Hello! We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of openssl, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: I upgraded to openssl 0.9.8a-6 but the Postfix errors stayed. It works now. I only upgraded openssl and forgot to upgrade libssl0.9.8. After upgrading I tried to comment out the smtpd_tls_cipherlist and it worked. Great! Why are the two packages openssl and libsslx.x.x not depending on each other? Regards, Martin

I applaud the FreeType developers for making this effort to clean up the exported interface of the library. I know that proper handling of library ABIs has been an evolutionary process for most of us in the Free Software community, and by switching to -export-symbols, you guys appear to be ahead of the curve. At the same time, I'm dismayed that this page talks about how badly people's desktops are going to break, and *not* about a library soname change; and there's no indication that the -version-info age argument has been reset in freetype2 cvs; even though the -export-symbols change is being made *explicitly because you know people have been using private interfaces*. The issue that a soname changed as been mentioned elsewhere in this thread. If the FreeType soname is changed and you provide both libfreetype6 and libfreetype7 for Debian (as is the normal practice), then most of the 583 packages you've identified will be linking against *both* libfreetype6 and libfreetype7 until they are rebuilt, because one of their dependent libraries (fontconfig, libgd, pango, whatever), links against the new freetype. The only thing that is predictable about what that will cause is that it is bad. If you made libfreetype7 conflict with libfreetype6, then the you wouldn't have that problem, and you'd just have a massive rebuild job. For this reason, it is less of an issue for distributions that don't provide compat packages ... a soname change just causes a big rebuild that is pointless for 98% of all packages and catches the 2% that have problems. (That 2% is pretty well known, however.) But beyond the world of nicely managed systems and distributions, there are a whole lot of systems with random libfreetypes floating around in one directory or another, which will also be subject to the two-versions problem. It's not a pretty situation either way ... but a soname change isn't a magic fix here. Regards, Owen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Thanks for doing this. Bruce, is this what you expected? Hi Guys, It is not what I expected, but it is not necessarily invalid. mmap implementations are described as *trying* to map the data between between some unmapped pages just so that you can try to extend the mapping. Given that this program is not doing anything else, it really *ought* to be the case that the reference faults. There should be lots of unused virtual address space available. Cheers - Bruce P.S. I should not always rely on Open Group docs. I just saw this in Linux docs: MAP_ANONYMOUS The mapping is not backed by any file; the fd and offset argu- ments are ignored. This flag in conjunction with MAP_SHARED is implemented since Linux 2.4. which means my original version ought to have always worked, but was not portable. Well, now with MAP_PRIVATE, it should be portable, too. :) Anyway, here is some POSIX verbiage that actually implies that the above reference really should fault (though it is colored optional): The system shall always zero-fill any partial page at the end of an object. Further, the system shall never write out any modified portions of the last page of an object which are beyond its end. [MPR] [Option Start] References within the address range starting at pa and continuing for len bytes to whole pages following the end of an object shall result in delivery of a SIGBUS signal. [Option End] An implementation may generate SIGBUS signals when a reference would cause an error in the mapped object, such as out-of-space condition. I suppose I could wrap the anonymous mmap call in sigbus protection, but holy moly, just how friggin hard should it be to mmap a bloody text file anyways? Sheesh!!!

Bug#349123: Is mkvmlinuz a ramdisk creator?

If it is rightfully not detected as a ramdisk creator because it isn't one, then the problem of not depending on one still remains, however. Bah, the kernel depends on a ramdisk creator, so there should be no problem. The ramdisk can be provided by the user and can be any kind of random ramdisk tool, this is used for example by d-i which builds his own ramdisk. Furthermore mkvmlinuz can be used to build zImage kernels without ramdisk. So, no there is no need for a dependency on a ramdisk creator. Bug#350183: udev (in contrast to hotplug) does not recognize multiple ethernets consistently
Package: udev Version: 0.082-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I have a system with an Asus motherboard with an on-board ethernet socket, and two RealTek PCI boards. Using hotplug, this works all the time. Using udev (which I was forced into today, with the new release of pcmcia-cs), the boards are inconsistently recognized. Several different boots has yielded different namings of the boards, and, worse, in some of the boots only one or two of the boards were recognized. I realize, from a cursory study of the documentation, that it is possible to learn how to formulate udev rules that may work around this problem. I could probably even figure out how to do it. But I don't think that the package is ready for release if if does not have default rules to handle this rather simple physical configuration. I am very willing to provide additional information and work with you maintainers to solve this problem. It only takes a few seconds to replace hotplug with udev, and to switch back. best regards Peder Chr. Bug#350182: pcmcia-cs upgrade to 3.2.8-6 requires installation of udev instead of hotplug
Package: pcmcia-cs Version: 3.2.8-5.2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable The new version of pcmcia-cs - 3.2.8-6 - unconditionally requires pcmciautils which in it turn requires udev. udev kicks out hotplug. As udev is not currently on an acceptable level of stability, I don't think this is acceptable, even for unstable. Certainly, this requirement should not be allowed into etch before the time where udev is more mature. On my system, the installation renders the entire system more or less unusable because the udev doesn't recognize my ethernet cards consistently. Duh. Never seen that one, never seen http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=349815 either. Either you got faulty RAM or something, either it's a really really well-hidden bug. Care to try valgrinding it? You'll need valgrind and sylpheed-claws compiled with debug symbols. run $ valgrind --tool=memcheck --error-limit=no sylpheed-claws and report the full log. You could also try the 2.0.0-rc4 at http://claws.sylpheed.org/snapshots/ Thanks, -- Colin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#343124: Resolved
Please remove the bug reports #343124 and #335418 since the problem has been resolved. The non-functionality was caused by bad IP numbers used in combination with an internal system loop-back behavior that seemed to verify correct connection through ping testing. This was false, but as not enough familiar with Linux and IP networking I could not discover it until today. Please apologize the extra bother I have caused by this stupidness of mine. Yes, but then '(' and ')' are quite commonly found in filenames, so someone might trip over this change. The previous fix for CAN-2005-0397 already partially broke support for movies and multi-layered images, so I'm not that happy seeing even more functionality taken away. Bug#350066: Tellico FTBS, libkcal.la references libXft.la which does not exist anymore
On Thu, Jan 26, 2006 at 10:34:31PM -0800, Steve Langasek wrote: On Fri, Jan 27, 2006 at 01:14:14AM +, Regis Boudin wrote: Package: kdepim Version: 3.5.0-5 Severity: grave Trying to build a snapshot of tellico, it FTBS because of a missing /usr/lib/libXft.la file. I tried to rebuild the latest version of tellico with pbuilder, which also failed with the same error. All the .la files from the kdepim dev packages reference /usr/lib/libXft.la, if the build was done with libxft-dev 2.1.8. However, the file was removed last week with xft 2.1.8.2-1, making the packages linking against any of the kdepim libs FTBFS, hence the grave severity. i386 if affected, but some arches are not, such as i64. I tried rebuilding kdepim and installing the generated packages, and I could successfully build tellico. I am not sure if the solution is to rebuild kdepim with the new xft, or include libXft.la back, so I CC the xft maintainer, but something needs to be done. Given that xft also supports pkg-config, AFAICT there's no specific reason that libxft-dev should need to include libXft.la anymore. The important thing is to know whether or not it's coming back, or whether we should requeue kdepim for rebuilding. If it's as simple as a rebuild, then just requeue kdepim for rebuilding. From what I understand, the .pc files are superior to .la files, although if I'm wrong someone should feel free to correct me. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#314385: [ft-devel] Re: FreeType issues
On Fri, Jan 27, 2006 at 02:20:54PM -0500, Owen Taylor wrote: On Sun, 2006-01-22 at 03:57 -0800, Steve Langasek wrote: Hi Werner, On Sun, Jan 22, 2006 at 09:12:46AM +0100, Werner LEMBERG wrote: I've read your very interesting mail at http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/11/msg00016.html What's your recommendation in the light of http://freetype.org/freetype2/freetype-2.2.0.html Thanks for writing! Yes, that is an issue. We're working on getting as many of these double-linkages fixed in Debian as possible, since it's not a sane assumption that libraries will never undergo ABI changes; but that doesn't directly benefit the rest of the world so long as Debian's libtool fixes aren't integrated upstream. One change that *would* mitigate the problems for other distributors (and Debian) is, since freetype 2.2 will already include a linker script, to add symbol versions to that linker script. This would give, um... a 50-50 chance of avoiding segfaults (or other corruption) with both libfreetype6 and libfreetype7 loaded in memory, assuming that the package upgraded to the libfreetype7 version is chosen randomly. I don't know if you consider those odds good enough to forgo a conflict between libfreetype6 and libfreetype7 in Red Hat; they seem good enough for me given that we would not want to ship libfreetype6 at all in etch and therefore the problems would be wholly limited to partial upgrades from sarge. If you made libfreetype7 conflict with libfreetype6, then the you wouldn't have that problem, and you'd just have a massive rebuild job. We'll have a massive rebuild job for etch either way, since we're already caught on ABI changes with 2.1.10 in Debian unstable; it's just deferred pending the release of freetype 2.2 upstream and a final ABI to rebuild against. If freetype 2.2 is released with the same libfreetype.so.6 soname, we will still have to provide a transition for packages by renaming the package itself to libfreetype6debian1 or the like, and still conflicting with libfreetype6; so changing the soname can only make things slightly better for us, it won't make it any worse. That's indeed true, but AFAICT having random libfreetypes floating around is pretty likely to cause problems for users *without* an soname change as well, given the high profile of those libraries that are affected by the ABI change. I don't claim that changing the soname is a magic fix, but I do think that the problems caused by an soname change are all bugs that need to be confronted (in general), rather than just being accepted and worked around. Bug#349550: Bug$349550: r-cran-nlme - fails to uninstall
That bug reported against r-cran-nlme is arguably the same bug as Bug#349637: r-base-core: /usr/lib to /usr/share move breaks \ R modules installation and removal where it was triggered by r-cran-matrix, but reported against r-base-core. The problem lies somewhere between both packages: r-cran-nlme shouldn't make the call it makes, and version 2.2.1-3 of r-base-core failed to support it. Earlier versions did, newer versions such as 2.2.1-4 do support it too. In other words, #349637 is now closed and I think it would be fair to downgrade this one as it is not release-critical any more. I'd even say close it, but it may make sense to keep it open until nlme has adjusted its postinst/postrm.
