Bug#391353: aide: Doesn't work suitably on Xen enabled kernel because of statically linked libc

2006-10-06 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: aide
Version: 0.11a-4
Severity: serious

I upgraded my personal server to etch and choosed to use a Xen enabled
kernel since we're going to have Xen support in etch (and also because
we're using this for the new alioth.debian.org so I wanted to have a
testbed for me).

This morning my server was almost unreachable and while looking through
the logs I discovered those messages:
Oct 6 05:17:34 arrakeen kernel: printk: 246 messages suppressed.
Oct 6 05:17:34 arrakeen kernel: 4gb seg fixup, process aide (pid 1627), cs:ip
73:080ae335
Oct 6 05:17:40 arrakeen kernel: printk: 291 messages suppressed.
Oct 6 05:17:40 arrakeen kernel: 4gb seg fixup, process aide (pid 1627), cs:ip
73:080ae335

Those messages appear when you use the standard libc6 instead of libc6-xen
on a Xen enabled kernel. However I have libc6-xen installed but aide
is using its own statically linked libc6 which thus generates this
message.

Those messages means that the kernel worked around the bad libc6 but it's
extremely ineffective in doing so, so much that it effectively DOSsed my
server during the 3 hours when aide was running.

I see two solutions:
- either you link again libc6 dynamically
- either you provide two versions of the binary and you use alternatives
(or you modify the cron script to detect /proc/xen and to start the
  right binary)

However it looks like there's no "libc6-xen-dev" to link statically a
xen-enabled libc6...

So for etch, the right thing to do might be to provide additionnaly
a binary dynamically linked and to use the dynamic one if you detect
/proc/xen.

Apparently then, I was just referring to Wolfgang's pointer. If there's

This is already solved, ConTeXt documentation is in tetex-doc-nonfree

Yes, it's part of AMSTeX which has a general license statement.

> unixtex.ftp: etch-ignore.

All are already in tetex-doc-nonfree. We can put l2tabuen.pdf,
pdftex-a.pdf and l2kurz.pdf back into tetex-doc. However,
fontinstallationguide contains fonts that are non-free, or in other
words we do not have the complete source for this PDF file.

> l2tabu.pdf: ok per James Troup in bug #384019 (?)

already in tetex-doc-nonfree, can be moved back

> doc/encspecs/ and examples: etch-ignore.

So this all is already resolved. However, there are more issues in this
bug that should be resolved, in particular files without source:

- The TeX Catalogue, source at
   cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/texcatalogue export -r HEAD
texcatalogue

   (needs python-xml)

- tds.dvi: Sources at http://www.tug.org/ftp/tex/tds/ or
  http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/tds/

- faq: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/uk-tex-faq/

I've written earlier in this bug:

,
| Since we should really check other docs as well, I'm retitling this one,
| and we'll keep it open until every document has been checked.
`

However, since we're not going to finish the complete auditing (which
covers TeX input files, not only documentation), I'm closing this in the
next changelog entry.

Package: xpad
Version: 2.11-2
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Hi!

Today I've lost some informations that were on some notes of xpad.
What I saw is that if using bold, italic or other kind of text format,
xpad will lose that information.

For example, a note with:

- info1
- info2
- info3
- info4
- info5

After formatting some infos:

- info1
bold- info2/bold
italic- info3/italic
strikethrough- info4/strikethrough
- info5

Then I quit from WindowMaker (I left the notes open).
I know that the text was written correctly, because I saw this by
opening the file on console, before starting WindowMaker again.
Entering on WindowMaker, xpad doesn't open automatically (if not using
any kind of formatting, it opens perfectly). Running manually xpad I
just see this on the note:

- info1
- info2

"info2" is not bold anymore and I lost info3, info4 and info5.

Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Nelson

Hi,

Because of continual changes in the Linux 2.6 LSM API, you will need to
have a recent version of Dazuko when using recent kernels. An up-to-date
Debian package version (2.3.1) is available at the Dazuko website:

http://www.dazuko.org/tgen.shtml#DEBIAN

I am working with my sponsor to get a more recent version into Testing,
but there are some open issues with the package (although there are no
bugs for these issues).

That is a kernel bug, these messages should have a rate limit to not
take the server down. I'm cloning the bug to the kernel because of
that.

Yes, that's a feature, see README.Debian.gz, section "statically
linked".

Kernel bug.

That's going to render aide useless, see README.Debian.gz.

Send a patch, please.

A third solution would be to link aide either against dietlibc or the
non-tls version of glibc. I do not have a clue how to do this.

That would be a libc6 bug.

I beg to differ. I'll probably make aide bail out if /proc/xen is
detected.

Marc

The same also happens in several other xserver-xorg-input-* packages,
including at least: elo2300, joystick, magellan, microtouch, penmount,
spaceorb, summa, tek4957; but others build just fine. If this is actually
a bug in another package like xserver-xorg-dev, feel free to reassign.

Bug#391357: konsole flashes and is unusable under kde 3.5.5-1

2006-10-06 Thread Dofri Jonsson
I have the same problem, but this is more likely a window manager bug,
and it is not limited to konsole.
The problem appears if my window focus policy is anything other than
"Click to Focus".
If I then have two windows that overlap and move the mouse between them,
the focus switches rapidly between them, rendering both unusable.

I consider this a kernel bug. The kernel should not DoS the system in
case a binary statically linked against a normal glibc is run.

Useless is a bit strong... I understand the need to be paranoid and
that's why I'm ok with the default of using a statically linked version.

This is the minimum, yes. However I would highly prefer having the
possibility to run a less secure aide rather than not running it at all.

What patch would you accept? You seem to not want my proposal of providing
both a dynamicly linked version and a statically linked version...

Neither do I.

Aurelien Jarno told it's very difficult to provide this. There's very
little chance that you get that for etch.

Actually, it is quite the opposite. This bug (379480) matches my symptoms.
Your bug is something else, but I won't file a bugreport for it as I don't see
it.
(BTW: I kicked off "UseFBDev" a long time ago as it gave weird results).

D'oh! I assumed Wolfgang pointed to his UseFBDev bug, and didn't
double-check it. Apologies to anyone reading bug #379480 for the noise.

It is configured in apt.conf and works with .48 (the problem with .48 is
gone, seemed indeed to be a server problem). If there is no change in
the config options it should also work with .58:

  Acquire

I feel like a dynamically linked aide is going to provide a false
sense of security.

I don't like the idea but I'd accept such a patch with an
appropriately worded description for the dynamically linked version.
I'd like two .debs to be built though, no idea if ftpmaster would
accept that. Maybe there would be need for an aide-base package.

I don't expect that for etch, we're freezing in like four days.

Thanks for reporting, I'll get a fixed version uploaded early/middle of
next week as I'll be on vacation today until Tuesday or Wednesday. Feel
free to make an NMU until I'm back.

Bug#391357: WORKAROUND - hold kwin at 4:3.5.4-2+b1 Re: Bug#391357: Acknowledgement (konsole flashes and is unusable under kde 3.5.5-1)

2006-10-06 Thread Arthur Marsh
After trying several combinations, I found that if I held kwin at
4:3.5.4-2+b1 and upgraded other kde packages to the version 4:3.5.5-1
present in unstable (holding kdebase at 4:3.5.4-2 but upgrading all the
packages required by kdebase except kwin to 4:3.5.5-1), the flashing
problem is gone.

Please merge this with #391361.

Arthur.

I'm looking through the RC-buglist for etch and noticed this bug. I'm
surprised by your recent reopening of this bug.

I've read it and the following applies:
* The package maintainer is of the opinion that this is not a bug;
* The Debian FTP-master is of the opinion that this is not a bug;
* The upstream copyright holder is of the opinion that this is not a
  bug;

You act like you're authorised to override these people's decisions.
I've done some research but you don't appear in db.debian.org, nor do
you seem to have any other involvement in Debian apart from mailinglist
postings.

I understand that you're trying to make Debian the best distribution
there is, just like myself. However, if those three entities listed
above have made very clear, same statements, it's not your prerogative
to simply keep overriding them and blocking this package from a release.
If you want more information on this topic, please see here:
http://www.debian.org/devel/constitution

I recommend this bug to be closed/downgraded (again!) soon.

Bug#391387: libapache2-mod-php5: 5.1.6-3 still causing apache2.2 to FAIL

Apologies if this is a dup or I've over-egged the severity, I'm just
copying what I see from other bug reports.

5.1.6-3 is installable on apache2.2-common and apache2-mpm-prefork,
however it still renders apache2 unstartable.

Bug#391388: zabbix-server-mysql: remote security problems

2006-10-06 Thread Ulf Harnhammar
Subject: zabbix-server-mysql: remote security problems
Package: zabbix-server-mysql
Version: 1:1.1.2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole
Tags: security patch

Hello,

Max Vozeler and Ulf Harnhammar from the Debian Security Audit Project
have found a number of format string bugs and buffer overflows
affecting zabbix. They allow malicious attackers to cause crashes or
remote execution of arbitrary code.

Here is a test exploit in Perl. If it is run on a machine instead of
the zabbix agent, a format string bug allows the agent to use "%n"
in the format string to crash the server or to write to arbitrary
memory locations, allowing for code execution. I have also attached
a patch which corrects all known security issues in zabbix-1.1.2.

I cannot confirm that. Neither `dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' nor
`dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' nor `dpkg-reconfigure -plow
xserver-xorg' asks me about the mouse-device. It always fixes it to
/dev/input/mice.

The problem is the -server option of tkpod which uses IO::Socket.
Adding libio-socket-ssl-perl to the build dependencies fixes this
error.

Fixed in svn, could some DD please check/upload?

And, are you experiencing that it doesn't work?

Could you try to reproduce with

/usr/sbin/apt-listbugs list apt-listbugs -d

and

ls -1 /var/cache/apt/archives/PACKAGE_*.deb | /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt -d
(substitute PACKAGE with the package name)

and send me the debug output?

I've taken a look at this package and I think removal might be
preferable over fixing the RC bug, for the following reasons:

* Of course, this RC bug;
* There's more to the RC bug than just the error on purge
(see comment Jaakko) and there's more unresolved bugs,
from the Lintian report I also see more serious problems.
* Maintainer is MIA;
* Last MU over two years ago;
* Last upstream release in 2003;
* Low popcon numbers.

Let's remove the package. Any objections?

Bug#389696: Diff for 0.6-2.1 NMU

2006-10-06 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hello,

> Sorry, it still fails to build for me, with the same error message.

In order to help the release of Etch, I've taken a look at this RC-bug.
There's an interesting problem here, namely that the test suite uses a
callout to an external website. This is not acceptable during a build
process: you cannot rely on net access to be available, and it has
potential privacy issues.

Since the only test uses a network callout, I've disabled the "make
test" call in debian/rules, which resolves this bug for me. The
installed package works as expected.

Thanks,
Thijs

I've tried to reproduce this bug and failed; it works just fine. Another
developer on IRC also could install it without problems. I'm downgrading
this bug now since it misses followup information and cannot be
reproduced by multiple people.

Sound like a removal candidate. Are there any packages in Debian that
offer similar functionality?

| Oh, alternatively, apache2.2-common's postinst script could have as its last

|
|rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/info/apache2-common.postrm

We discussed this fairly extensively on IRC today and are going to end
up doing this. It's less crackful than the alternatives, really.

Packaging apache has clearly scrambled my wits as well. :-)

Bug#391428: libept-dev: undeclared dependency on libsigc++-2.0-dev

2006-10-06 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: libept-dev
Version: 0.4.2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

Considering libept.pc's declaration of

Requires: ... sigc++-2.0 ...

and some libept headers' inclusion of libsigc++ headers, libept-dev
really ought to declare a dependency on libsigc++-2.0-dev. (As it
stands, debtags currently FTBFS on all architectures because the
buildds don't know to install libsigc++-2.0-dev.)

Could you please remedy this when you get a chance?

Thanks!

Bug#381477: acl2: amd64 build succeeds with current gcl (2.6.7-22)

2006-10-06 Thread Camm Maguire
Greetings, and thanks! I agree, have been unable to reproduce by
hand. Is there any way I can requeue a package as an ordinary
developer, or must such requests be handled manually via email request
to the buildd admins? I've always been a bit frustrated by this, as
the only sure fire way I have to awake the autobuilders to to upload a
new version, which of course burdens all arches equally.

Take care,

Hi,
I'm downgrading to important, as the bug only surfaces with one
particular RSS feed, and no one objected after my last mail.

I'm also cloning this bug to python-feedparser, as that's the point
where the problem lies AFAICS. For more background please see my
last mail (partially quoted above):
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=374741;msg=57

There was also a testcase attached, which shows the problem. The
HTML snippet is taken from Zugschlus' blog, it looks rather broken,
but python-feedparser shouldn't just hang (infinite loop AFAICS).

I'm cloning this bug instead of just reassigning, because rawdog
contains a copy of feedparser.py with some local modifications. That
has to be fixed too once the bug is resolved within feedparser.

Cheers,
Christian Aichinger

according to http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/gij-4.1 a depends is
already there.

i thought pre-depends was needed to gaurantee that something would be
present for your configure run.

Bug#391357: Fwd: kwin 4:3.5.5-1 causes problems (window flicker/flashing)

2006-10-06 Thread Pierre Habouzit

Subject: kwin 4:3.5.5-1 causes problems (window flicker/flashing)
Date: ven 6 octobre 2006 14:06
From: Arthur Marsh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: debian-kde@lists.debian.org

I've reported this as Debian bug #391357.

After several combinations of upgrades and downgrades, I've found that
the 3.5.5-1 versions of KDE packages work alright, but that kwin
4:3.5.5-1 causes flickering / flashing of windows when a window is in
 focus.

Holding kwin at 4:3.5.4-2+b1 (and hence also kdebase) and upgrading
other Debian KDE packages to 3.5.5-1 seem to work alright.

Hope that this saves someone else a few hours.

Arthur.

AFAIK, ordinary developers do not have the power to requeue even their
own packages; you need to ask a buildd maintainer or (IIRC) a member
of the release team (or else upload a build yourself if you have
access to a suitable machine).

Anyway, I believe I arranged for the amd64 buildd admins to get a copy
of my previous message, but I'm explicitly copying them now just in
case.

If this package is installed, opening a document in *.doc-Format will
crash the whole application. Deleting the .openoffice.org2 folder in the
users' home sometimes help for opening the doc once.

To make OO work again, I have to purge openoffice.org-help-de and remove
..openoffice.org2 in my /home

odontolinux has this RC bug which requires quite some overhaul of the
packaging to be fixed. I think removal might be more worthwhile for the
following reasons:

* This RC bug, and another potential one reported by lintian;
* Last MU in 2002;
* Maintainer seems MIA and is upstream;
* Popcon: 1 install 0 votes;
* Upstream website is down.

Combined, I don't think fixing the RC bug(s) is worth the effort for the
package in its current state.

Any objections to removal?

Thijs

I tried to reproduce it with a "set -x" in the postinst script.
However, this time it configured tex-common and tetex-* first, and no
error occured.

Installing texlive on my system that had tetex installed, simply by

I think that this happened because of some configuration files left from the
tetex installation in /etc/texmf/fmt.d

I was able to install texlive anew after I cleanly purged all tetex-* packages
by hands.

Bug#391445: gcc-4.1: cross-compile broken for powerpc: Link tests are not allowed after GCC_NO_EXECUTABLES

2006-10-06 Thread Jim Heck
Package: gcc-4.1
Version: 4.1.1ds1-13
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

Building gcc as a cross compiler for powerpc target on i386 platform,
gcc will not build. The following components are in use.

binutils 2.17-2
libc6_2.3.6.ds1-4_powerpc.deb
libc6-dev_2.3.6.ds1-4_powerpc.deb
lib64gcc1_4.1.1-13_powerpc.deb
libc6-ppc64_2.3.6.ds1-4_powerpc.deb
libc6-dev-ppc64_2.3.6.ds1-4_powerpc.deb
linux-kernel-headers_2.6.17.10-3_powerpc.deb

The binutils package was built using the line
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain/binutils-2.17# TARGET=powerpc-linux-gnu
fakeroot debian/rules binary-cross

The libraries and kernel headers were converted using dpkg-cross
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain# dpkg-cross -a powerpc -b l*.deb

All of the above were installed using dpkg -i

GCC was built using GCC_TARGET=powerpc, like this
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain# cd gcc-4.1-4.1.1ds1/
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain/gcc-4.1-4.1.1ds1# export GCC_TARGET=powerpc
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain/gcc-4.1-4.1.1ds1# debian/rules control
androcross:/usr/src/cross-toolchain# dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -rfakeroot -b >
../gcc.build 2>&1 || echo 'Build error'

The tail of the file with the resulting error was
checking libintl.h usability... yes
checking libintl.h presence... yes
checking for libintl.h... yes
checking for library containing gettext... configure: error: Link tests are not
allowed after GCC_NO_EXECUTABLES.
make[3]: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1

Additional information. I backed up to gcc-4.1_4.1.1-5 and tried the
same build using the same libraries and binutils, and it succeeded
although there were lots of warnings about packages in the control file
but not in the files list. I have not tried that compiler yet.

Bug#389389: ndtpd: Better remove?

2006-10-06 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
On Fri, 2006-10-06 at 15:48 +0200, Bas Zoetekouw wrote:

Not really, but there's two clients for the same protocol in Debian
which have even lower popcon numbers. A websearch for the implemented
protocol (I hadn't heard of it before) turns up nothing to indicate that
this is in any way an active kind of technology.

And as the package has been unmaintained for nearly two years, I see no
interest in Debian to keep it.

Package: apache2

CVE-2006-3918 reads:
http_protocol.c in (1) IBM HTTP Server 6.0 before 6.0.2.13 and 6.1
before 6.1.0.1, and (2) Apache HTTP Server 1.3 before 1.3.35, 2.0
before 2.0.58, and 2.2 before 2.2.2, does not sanitize the Expect
header from an HTTP request when it is reflected back in an error
message, which might allow cross-site scripting (XSS) style attacks
using web client components that can send arbitrary headers in
requests, as demonstrated using a Flash SWF file.

You "of course" omitted the interesting parts; i.e. the versions of the
OOO packages.

If this is rc2-2, do upgrade to rc3-1.
It might be pure luck that it worked one time with rc2-2 and one time
not.

Pleaso do.

In tthe meanwhile, I am downgrading this

First case works for me; I don't have a M$ Office-created doc handy to
test the second.
