Re: Change user used by package
Marvin Renich wrote: * Harald Braumann ha...@unheit.net [090113 05:47]: AFAIK, there's no way for multiple independent packages for using the same user. So jabber-muc needs to create its own user. On update, that's no problem. The post-install script can chown the package's directories for the new user. But a downgrade would then not be possible. The old version couldn't access the directories. Is there precedence for such a situation? How can it be resolved? Cheers, harry BTW, are you coordinating this with the current jabber-muc maintainer (CC'ed in case he is not subscribed)? I'm not subscribed, haven't been following the lists for a while. The old package should probably be removed completely in favor of the new. However, more to the point, I don't see why the two packages couldn't use the same user. Why not check during installation to see if the user account exists? If it does, use it. If not create it? -- Jamin W. Re: Time to rethink ifupdown
Alexey Feldgendler wrote: Greetings to everybody on this list, it's my first post here. ifupdown, the official Debian network configuration tool, is great for configuring interfaces like Ethernet adapters. However, as time goes, more and more use cases occur which are hard to fulfill with ifupdown as it is. My guess is that it's time to rethink the philosophy behind ifupdown and give it some natural development. Beyond the need to potentially rethink its development is the existence of a rather obscure and frustrating bug #253472. The short of this bug is the ifup calls dhclient with the -e switch. This means that if at any point in the interfaces life the dhclient is unable to acquire a functional IP lease for the interface, dchclient will error and exit. This can leave a system completely unreachable. A check of the latest ifupdown sources in unstalbe (0.6.7) shows that the use of the -e switch is still present. -- Jamin W. You have to fix the bugs, close them, and then go back later and make sure they actually got closed, which isn't happening. This seems to be hit and miss. Collins wrote [in a different order]: However, I'd prefer to have a work in progress blurb in README.Debian, partially to acknowledge that there are still some things to be smoothed out. (The reason I believe an update is appropriate in spite of regarding this as work in progress is that the version fixes many errors (some severe and security) of the package currently in unstable.) Why not request the removal of the version that is in unstable and put the work in progress version into experimental? Then as the kinks are worked out of the packages they could be moved over into unstable. This might mean that a few of the modules don't make it in right away, but would probably make for a smoother transition. - The database admin password is stored in debconf. This should not be done. Ask for it, use it, and then remove it from the database. What does this mean for the removal of the database upon purging the package? I don't have the impression that people will be very happy with debconf prompts in the postrm. (Of course, debconf might already have been removed in the postrm...) Should I just not drop the database? Dropping user entered data blindly isn't usually a good thing. While a prompt during postrm isn't great, IMHO it's better than storing a DB admin password in debconf. -- Jamin W. Re: Debian should not modify the kernels!

I think we have to properly address and close the whole thing! Apparently noone agrees with me. I agree that the Debian kernel sources shouldn't contain any feature backports that aren't specifically to address security issues. I'd prefer a kernel source package with as few changes as possible. However, I also agree that it's Herbert's perrogative as pacakge maintainer to package what he wants (short of a policy violation or general resolution). I can't help but state that I am rather pissed off! I am especially annoyed with Herbert, who refused to make even the slightest budge in a direction showing his willingness to cooperate. I am sick and tired of these it's your problem and it's my choice excuses. Debian is a cooperative effort, it's not a conglomeration of hundreds of maintainers that do their own thing with their own packages. Sadly, you must be seeing a different Debian that I've seen. Sure the developers frequently work together toward an end goal, but I've seen meantion of a few cases of developers maintaining their packages exactly the way they want regardless of what other have to say. You've always got the option of packaging a new kernel source package without the excess. -- Jamin W. Collins Remember, root always has a loaded gun. But a user may upload files without using them in the application. So, the files are available, but unused, and unreferenced. That would appear to be a deficiency of the spip app and one that should probably be brought to the upstream developers attention. The application should probably log all uploads. Additionally, you may upset users by simply deleting their uploaded files on purge. Some may see this as deletion of user data, which should not be done. Of course, I understand. But I wonder they won't upload personal files for another use than spip here... This falls into something of a grey area. Can the data concievably be of value ot the user without spip? If so, then it is probably user data and should not be removed without confirmation from the user (debconf prompt that defaults to no?) As someone else has already pointed out, /usr/share should be capable of being made read-only. Any runtime changing data for an application True. But due to the implemntation of the application, which is written in php, datas are stored on the program dir. There is no real separation between datas and functions. And if i symlink some datas (for apache access AND direct file handler access), i'll will setup another alarm... and it won't be accepted. So, use Alias directives to relocate the directories that need changing data to /var/lib. There is no need to use symlinks to accomplish this. As a matter of fact, your current apache include enables the following of symlinks, which it doesn't need and probably shouldn't. I can provide examples of this if you need. -- Jamin W. I've still moves documentation to usr/share/doc, instead of spip/ecrire/doc, but it is rather different with the cache and other application managed files. Yes, symlinks are needed for direct file access (unless you patch the source). Sorry, when I stated symlinks weren't needed I meant on the Apache side. I've dealt with this exact problem in my packaging of Media Mate (new name for Movie Mate). I'm currently using symlinks to allow the php script to access files by the paths they expect and Apache Alias directives to allow http requests to get the files without enabling symlink following. I accept. Please send me examples in private, if you found a way to move php files accessing each other (via include) in another directory, without patching the application. package name change (moviemate - mediamate)
What is the preferred method of effecting a package rename and upgrade between versions? Movie Mate v0.9.2 is currently in the Debian archive. Due to upstream changes (added tracking for other media types), the name has been changed to Media Mate. Thus, Media Mate is the upgrade to Movie Mate. This leaves me with the question of how to properly change the package name and upgrade installations of the older package. In building the new Media Mate package, I've declared a Conflicts with the moviemate package to effect moviemate's uninstall when the mediamate package is installed. However, this leaves the question of migrating the moviemate's configuration to mediamate. For this, I pull the debconf answers for moviemate's questions and set them as the answers to mediamate's questions (which are mostly the same), and set the _seen_ flag to true so the questions will not be asked (much like an upgrade where the package name has not changed). Since the package name has changed, the configuration and data files are now stored in different locations. So, I plan on moving the data files to their new location. But, what about the old configuration files, and the old package's state in dpkg? Should these be removed since the new package is installed (more or less an upgrade) or should these be left because the old package hasn't been purged and the new one has a different name? Also, moviemate has asks a question during install about removing the DB on purge, with the answer stored in debconf's db. During the upgrade would it be acceptable to clear this answer under moviemate once it's been migrated to mediamate since the old DB is upgraded and used by mediamate and a purge of moviemate would then remove a database that's still in use? Or, should mediamate copy the old database and and leave it for moviemate to potentially purge? Personally, I'm leaning toward having the new package manually remove all the old packages configuration files and unsetting the DB purge flag. But, I can see how this may be seen as a bad thing. Thus, I figured I'd ask here for comments and suggestions on how to handle this type of situation. -- Jamin W. You instead (may) want to upload a package called moviemate which is a dummy package that depends on MediaMate. Remember, if the user has MovieMate installed they will not get MediaMate without actually asking for it. I was thinking about the dummy package approach, but then the dummy package would just hang around indefinitely, right? how much work is involved in hiding this from the user? In general you should try to just make things work. The packaging details are something our users should not need to know about. Remember from their perspective nothing changed. Not a whole lot, I've got the answers being migrated already. if you can scarf in the old db and make the upgrade just work, that is the preferred approach. Of course that may prove to be too complicated or you may just not have enough time. The old DB works fine after the upgrade against it. The questions are. Whether removing the configuration files (/etc/moviemate) is a taboo, even though the configuration is migrated (/etc/mediamate). And, whether blanking the answer to the DB purge from moviemate's install is seen as a problem. I think if I do the above two items I can provide a very smooth transition from moviemate to mediamate that a user really won't notice (as far as the backend changes). I'd just like to know if anything I'm planning is frowned upon or can be done better. -- Jamin W. Collins Linux is not The Answer. Yes is the answer. Linux is The Question. - Neo

If your package has a bug affecting m68k, login to kullervo and fix it. Would be happy to. Unfortunately, I can't, don't have an account. If you're going to claim that you don't have the knowledge to investigate and fix difficult problems, perhaps you should reconsider whether you are able to maintain your packages? I never claimed I didn't have the knowledge to fix it. I stated I don't have access to the architecture. Lacking access to a resource does not mean one lacks the knowledge of how to preform tasks on/with the resource. Who is sick of this I don't have an m68k box to fix my bug excuse. That's cool, because I'm a little sick of the assumptions that someone has access to resources because they maintain X package. Not everyone listed on http://www.debian.org/devel/people is a full Debian Developer. As such, not all of them have access to the resources available to full Debian Developers, or even the rights of them. Yet, we are expected to function as one and are berated by some DDs when we state we don't have access to some resources. -- Jamin W.
