Yep, IMHO. We should be FHS compliant by now, there's been plenty of time.

The CTTE recommendation, or DPL order, was that the woody has
the symlinks from /usr/man/pakcage to /usr/share/man/package, IIRC.

Is this changed now ? Can we drop the postinst/prerm requirements

Well, traditional X11 handling requires the location of

so the new location /etc/X11/locale/app-defaults/ is just following
that traditional way.

And this behavior has already submitted as the patch by M. Ishikawa,

I can't get what is the merit of your proposal, but maybe this should

strings and drawing the decoded ones with XmbDrawString().

I'm willing to support such a priority increase now; but first, please come
up with a list of specific things that a window manager needs to do.

Thank you Branden, and Changwoo. I am happy to read this.

We can't just say add 10 points if the window manager is
internationalized without telling the possible thick-headed American
package maintainer how to determine whether it is or not. :)

I have thought that users can judge if the specific software
is correctly internationalized or not, and they will file their
report on BTS if they find the wrong priorities. But your concern
may be reasonable.

 One item would obviously be:
+ The window manager should use XmbDrawString() instead of XDrawString()
 for non-error/non-diagnostic text output.

Please come up with more, if there are any, and I'd be happy to make a new
 policy proposal incorporating your suggestions.

In fact, the true internationalization may require more than just replacing
XDrawString() with XmbDrawString(), but this is a good indicator as a start
point, I think.

# Anyway, users will file their report on that package if it can not be used.

Just one thing: Error text output could be localized one (libc does have
localized error messages for such as No such file or directory or
File exists. So excluding error output is not good in this case, I think.

on my slink system as well as on potato, by locally building patched package.

The problem related to version-depends, is one of main reasons that we need
JP Merge Operation, since separate packaging would not solve this easily.

You can find some more samples in JP Packages.

We hope that the coming potato has many enhanced support for our language
by helping and efforts from many official maintainers in Debian. Thanks to you.

prompting is that it doesn't fit well into an automated or gui install.

Under these circumstances do you still feel it's useful to add
 a locked account?

How about to include following small script
 (maybe /sbin/sashpasswd with permission 0700 or 0744):

#! /bin/sh
PATH=/usr/bin
passwd root
passwd sashroot

and promote to use it instead of passwd command itself in changing
the root's password.

I think about hacking the passwd command, but it may go difficult work as
the passwd package has so many patches, and not so efficient work to hack
with other package, at least for me, I feel. It may be better just to use it.

then, the action maybe

a) sash is inert and doesn't manage the password file.
: only put the files into their place.

b) sash will become the root shell.

c) sash will create a sashroot account from the current root

: the default setting for 3.3-6

and (here is my proposal)

d) sash will create a locked sashroot account with useradd, and
display the message to use sashpasswd above as soon as possible.

By the way, /bin/sash is not listed on /etc/shells. Is it Okay ?

# sash may be not the choise for ordinary users, but it does not

May I ask what the point of these enhanced mbr's is, since all of these
features are available from the boot loader (eg LILO)? I've always had my
LILO configured to boot from the floppy and alternate partitions, and this
would be fairly easy to add to the default lilo.conf for beginners.

Maybe you are so clever that you can easily understand how to fiddle
that lilo.conf, but there are many people who can not find proper settings
of lilo for their needs. (So both of how-to and FAQ about lilo is distributed
additional to the very detailed documents of lilo itself)

And LILO require the files (at least the 2nd loader and map file) on
different place than the MBR (Master Boot Record). you can boot from
alternate partitions by your setup, but if you remove the partition
which includes the required files (2nd loader and kernel map) and
overwrite on them, the rest partition would not work for you.

By putting the current mbr or alternate extipl on MBR, you can
select partitions by solely using the code in MBR (just 446bytes).
And you can set lilo in each partitions boot sector, this is more
easy configuration than having multiple partition setup in single
lilo.conf for many beginners.

No beginner understands what those funny letters that mbr prints mean
anyway, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets annoyed when they pop up
because I'm holding down shift to get the LILO prompt.

Why don't you put delay=30 or delay=20 in your lilo.conf ?
It makes more easy to catch the LILO prompt for you.

What was the rationale for adding mbr to the default configuration?

 To stop the annoying FAQ:

Yes. Philip knows the begginers. These FAQ is very frequently up
even these days, or much more since more and more people begin to use
Linux and LILO. I think Debian's current configuration to use it's mbr
package is reasonable.
(Well, if I don't think so, I would not make the package of extipl :)

and 4PM British time on Monday-Friday.

No one is asking you to sit by the phone for 3 months. But if you can
only be reached at number XX-YYY at the hours of 3-7 GMT on Saturday,
then tell the new maintainers that. Give them time windows that work
for you. Give them a few different numbers and suggested times. I
 mean, common sense, people.

Thanks for your information. That is what I want to know.

Sure, but put people in the queue. It may take up to 3 months or
longer if you're hard to reach on the phone -- so just plan on that.

3 months or longer ! (sigh) but if it is required condition,
all we can do is just to wait in the queue ...

Well, I think it's pretty clear that we need more active people in the
New Maintainer Group. I hereby volunteer (I'm in the US, NYC area,
and only speak English and smidgeons of Spanish, German, and French).

I respect the people in the New Maintainer Group including you
for their work. I hope there were the one in Japan, but no one can
force the current official maintainer in JP to take charge of it,,,

  P.S.
I think, and hope that the Debian is open project.

It is -- don't get paranoid. The New Maintainer Group is just swamped
a bit. I think it needs more people -- highly trustable people, of
 course.

I hope the New Maintaier Group can find the highly trustable and
active official maintainer as their member in Japan, or somewhere
in the far-east area.

Thank you for your reply. I'm impressed your idea.

In article [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 John Lapeyre [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I think it would be great for Debian JP and Debian to find someone
in Japan who can do interviews in Japan and report to the new-maintainer
people in Debian proper (in Europe or U.S.) That is to say, it would
be good to have a new-maintainer person located in Japan.

I think so. and more, I hope that the site for dupload established
in Japan so that we can select the near site to upload our packages.

In current standard /etc/dupload.conf contains chiark (uk), master (us?),
erlangen (de), and giano (it). I hope that one of the JP's site is
registered as the official upload site. But it may takes some effort in
JP project also, and I am only just plain member in JP project, so I have to
debate about it in JP project also, not only here,,,

This could speed up the process and improve communications.

I am glad to hear from you :) Thank you.

Hi !

In article [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Fumitoshi UKAI [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I can volunteer to do it, if it is really needed and anyone object to it.
I've been maintain Debian JP machines, ftp archive, web server,
mailing-list and Debian official mirror in Japan about two years or three.

Thank you for your proposal :). I think it is required very much to get
the Debian project to be more global organization as fast as we can,
because if more people can join the project smoothly, the project can
get more resource to do various task. if someone has the required condition
to pass the verification by the New Maintainers Group, I can not find
the merit of keep him (or her) in the long waiting queue. If the problem
is only related to the human power, the action to do should be to increase
the member of the Group, not to keep the queue longer.

Adam Di Calro told Remember that approving new maintainer is
a very _sensitive_ area, and I think it should be, but if the members in
the Debian Project want to make this project to be true global and universal,
an action to make the waiting queue shorter should be taken anyway now or
in the near future.

I am eager to know if anyone has objection.

 also
some verification mechanism is required. But I doubt the enoughness
and effectiveness of the current processing mechanism.

developers-reference told us also:

Once this information is received and processed, you should be
contacted with information about your new Debian maintainer account.
If you don't hear anything within 7-14 days, please send a followup
message asking if your original application was received.
Do not re-send your original application, that will just confuse the
  new-maintainer team. Please be patient, especially near release points;
mistakes do occasionally happen, and people do sometimes run out of
  volunteer time.

so according to this, I should be waiting at least more 11 days patiently
before sending a followup.

P.S.
I think, and hope that the Debian is open project.
