Of course they do. When we started as ISP years back a local BBS operator
shared a secret with me:
"I didn't change a thing on my machine" and "It always works on (the other
system)"

Microsoft continued that with all their "Server OTL" messages.

More likely it's honking graphics, broken user boxes, filled c:\WINDOWS
directories
and the like. Diagnose the problem; do NOT believe the users wihout
verification.

On the face of it, running a dialup is ridiculous so I'll assume you have
your reasons.  With 40 dialups you should look at separate terminal servers;
that's what they are for. Hell, last time we rebooted ours was 2000-01-01 just
to be on the safe side.

mini ISP

2001-11-21 Thread Iain
Hi,

I have been running a mini ISP with what I could only describe as a pretty
'unique' setup:

It is all running of a Debian 2.2 box.

It has 5 Stallion 8 port serial cards providing 40 PPP dialin lines. (I had
to patch the kernel to add support for more than 4 boards)

I am running Squid with transparent proxy on the same box.

It is also running ipchains firewall / masquerading.

The hardware specs are as follows:

Intel Pentium III - 933 mhz
Inbuilt sym53c896-1 SCSI controller.
Inbuilt eepro100 ethernet controller
512 MB Ram

I am a little concerned that I may be overdoing things. In particular I am
worried that I/O might not be keeping up. Some users have complained about
slow download speeds and timeouts.

Does this sound like a ridiculous way to run dialup? Is there any way I can
diagnose I/O usage, etc.

thanks,

Iain.

P.S. Please CC replies to me.

There are no "gotchas ... that aren't covered in the official Exim
documentation". The Exim spec and FAQ are extremely detailed.

It is not a drop-in replacement though. You can not use your sendmail
related configuration files with Exim. And you can not use your sendmail
log (or stats) analysis tools with Exim's logs.

Debian's packe for exim comes with a small script that can probably easily
help you build an adequate Exim configuration.

Smoothwall is a handy, quick install, but I've been unimpressed with
support. The web site espouses the many benefits of open source

"I won't ['add this feature'|'tell you how to use it'] unless someone

reimplimented it myself with Woody, running 2.4.x,iptables and snort.
Probably not managable by the boss in a pinch, but it turns out that it
was damn easy to set up myself. (iptables rules are a cinch)
I saw a glowing review for March Networks SME Server 5[2] (formerly
e-Smith) in Linux Magazine this month. It purports to compete with the
Cobalts of the world by providing an "appliance distribution" -- just
the software to be installed on hardware of your choosing. The software
install is free to download[3] and money is made by the ServiceLink[4]
service which can take care of monitoring and updates. But, alas, not
Debian as far as I can tell ...

If you haven't noticed it so far, Stormix, the company that creates
Storm Linux, has gone bankruptcy. So Storm Linux isn't available any
more and one would have to either look at other distributions based on
Debian GNU/Linux or build a firewall on his own.

2001-11-21 Thread Petre Daniel

well,i can connect manually from here,a
194.102.92.x ip..
the pop3 server is on 194.102.92. class,the
dialup clients are on 217.156.43.x class.
i have noticed that i cant reverse domains on our
leased line clients with servers on the 217
class..
so,there is no firewall, like all that we changed
is the dialup ips..like from 194.102.92.x to
217.156.43.x

If you haven't noticed it so far, Stormix, the company that creates
Storm Linux, has gone bankruptcy. So Storm Linux isn't available any
more and one would have to either look at other distributions based on
Debian GNU/Linux or build a firewall on his own.

We need more info.

Show us that it doesn't work.

Can you connect to the POP3 server manually?

Did the DNS get updated?

Do you have firewall or TCP Wrapper rules blocking that range?

We can't guess -- you need to look at many things.

Does their internet connections work? Then probably Radius works. (If not,
did they change the IPs that were assigned correctly?)
