Kde metapackage

I'm trying to write a little tutorial for the installation of KDE 2.2.x and when I installed it on my machine there was no kde metapackage and I took everything from unstable package by package. almost there.. I think (KDE2.2 install)

Does anyone know how I make the step to getting the ability to open up a KDE session back? I didn't get any errors during the install of KDE from unstable, I did apt-get -t unstable install kde and it seemed to be downloading and then installing all the bits I would expect so I'm guessing it is misconfigured somewhere. Rachel This will only be partially usefull, but with give you a pointer in the right direction. You do not say which login manager you are using. X has its own xdm, which is rather plain and dull. KDE had kdm, which is the default login manager for KDE, and is probably only suggested in the kde metapackage. I've not had much luck in configuring this one. Gnome also has its own, gdm. I use this one because it seemed to find ALL the window managers/desktops automagically. Since it works for me directly from the apt-get, I have not bothered to look to much into how any of them are configured, but I have seen this issue discussed at great length both here and other Linux lists. Whichever one you are using, the man pages list some good, and arcaic info that might be of some use. If you have the plain xdm, I would strongly recommend getting either gdm or kdm. either one is much better than xdm. I also know that the Debian X team were working on getting all the graphical login managers to work together, but for now they each conflict with the other, so you can only have one installed on your system at any one time. I'm not sure what the timeline is for the co-operative version, but I have not seen it discussed lately. I hope this at least gets you started in the right direction. Cheers, John Gay

You do not say which login manager you are using. I'm using kdm it gets to the screen where you normally login and choose what you want to use but kde isn't listed I hope this at least gets you started in the right direction. it certainly gives me a better idea of what to be looking for. Thanks =) Rachel

Trying to fix this with apt-get -f install, as suggested results in the entire KDE being removed! Here is the list of conflict I now get with this command: progeny:/home/jgay# apt-get -t unstable install kde Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). progeny:/home/jgay# Basically, kdebase and kdelibs3 fail during install, but since I can only use xterm, I can not give you a complete breakdown of what failed due to xterms limited buffer. Looks like I'll have to try installing every package explicitly. This is how I got in the mess I'm currently in. (with the good /etc/apt/preferences and /etc/apt/sources.list, for sure :-)) So, to answer your question, no, you can not update KDE2.1.2 to KDE 2.2.1 using the metapackage kde. It would probaly work for a fresh install of KDE2.2.1 onto a woody system but it won't update an existing KDE system. I'll let you know how I get on with fixing this. Thank you, Cheers, John Gay after my previous, erroneous, message to the list, i did install the kde metapackage, with the same results you did. after the first failure, i did an apt-get -f install, allowed it to remove the as yet-uninstalled packages, configure and install the ones it could. then, i did another apt-get -t unstable install kde, which resolved most of the problems. one further apt-get -t unstable install kde cleared up all installation problems. my only gripe to the moment is that my previous desktop settings, as regards themes, icon size, were erased by the new control center. that's easy to work around though thanks ivan for your work. bob ---

Re: Kde mouse problems
Am Montag, 5. November 2001 21:33 schrieb THE CROW: Hi everybody, I recently installed debian 2.2r3 on my pc, and I did a dist-upgrade. I have a weird problem that's annoying me. It happen when I run X with every window manager ( KDE included ). I can't see the mouse icons 'cause what I ever see is a white square ! I didn't belie that when I saw it !!! The X server version is 4.1.0-9; I looked everywhere for a solution but I couldn't find anything :( Anybody of you have an idea about how to solve this problem, and most of all which is the cause of this malfunction ??? It might be an interaction between gpm (the mouse handler for text mode) and the X server. As root do a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and make sure to set Use kernel framebuffer device interface to no. When I had this set to yes (on my Matrox Mystique), gpm does not recognize switching from text to graphics mode and continues trying to draw a mouse cursor, instead of leaving this job to the X server. -- Wolfgang Ratzka
Qt
In any configure script that checks for Qt, I get this error message: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (= Qt 2.2.1) (libraries) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Of course one would think that means Qt isn't installed, but alas, I'm running KDE which uses Qt so that isn't so. Maybe the header files just aren't there? Well, I have the libqt-dev package too. Hmmm... what else could it be? Maybe I need to simply reinstall the libqt2 package? Nope, tried that. Golly gee willikers nothing's working! Ok, I'm done with my sarcastic rundown of already-tried options. Any idea why my system just doesn't seem to realize that it has Qt 2.3.1 installed? This is preventing me from compiling a number of programs and from starting a new project of my own. :-( Well, I'll survive. Thank you for any suggestions - maybe I've stumbled on some previously unexpected contingency that needs to be dealt with. Thanks! - Josh
