Thanks, the Oxygen White cursors are working for me again. The solution for me
was:

# cd /usr/share/icons/Oxygen_White/cursors && ln -s left_ptr default

I guess the same will have to be done to other mouse cursor themes (Oxygen
Blue/Yellow/etc) if someone wants to use them with FF.

Bookworm: Mouse cursor issues after upgrading to FireFox v128?

2024-10-08 Thread local10
Hi,

Problem: After upgrading to Firefox v128 from v115, Firefox seems to have
stopped using some mouse cursors as per the active KDE mouse cursor theme (the
Oxygen White theme, in my case). For some reason, instead of showing the white
arrow mouse cursor as per the theme, FF now shows a black mouse cursor.

Used to work fine in FF v115 (and many prior FF versions) before the upgrade.

More info:

1. The issue appears to affect all mouse cursor themes (Adwaita, all Oxygen,
etc) with the exception of Breeze cursor themes (maybe because I'm using Breeze
global desktop theme?).

2. Only the first (and perhaps the most important) arrow mouse cursor is
affected, the rest seem to work properly. For example, with the Oxygen White
cursor theme active, FF v128 shows black arrow mouse cursor instead of the
white arrow cursor, but also correctly shows the white hand from the the Oxygen
White theme when the cursor hovers over the links.

3. With the Breeze Light theme active, FF v128 correctly shows all mouse
cursors, including showing the white arrow cursor when appropriate.

Any ideas? Thanks

KDE global theme: Breeze
KDE mouse cursor theme: Oxygen White (other Oxygen mouse cursor themes also
have the above issue)

I'm also on X11 with Bookworm, but never really have had any significant issues
with restoring sessions in KDE 5. I practically never turn my PC off, just put
it to sleep and turn off the monitor and it has been working mostly fine for me
for years (I don't use activities, though).

That's good to hear. My plan was, if I decided to upgrade, to go from stable to

There are some small things that annoy me somewhat in KDE 5 but they are not
anything major, here's one, for example:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462345

My concern, obviously, that going for a major KDE upgrade will introduce new
bugs or will break things that are working fine now.

However, has anything meaningfully improved in the KDE 6.x that would justify

My idea was to use the min double-click interval to fix the mouse that glitches

There are several issues with that window:

1. Requires extra clicks, counterintuitive. If you open the new "Open with"
window and start typing you won't find the app you're looking for because the
window initially limits the apps only to "standard" apps and you have to click
the "Show other apps" button to see other apps.

This is really not smart as the reason one would use the "Open with > Other
apps" window is because one's not satisfied with the initially presented apps
and wants to see other apps.

2. Large icons, no organization, no customization, the list of all apps takes
several pages.

3. One has to know the name of the app to find it. In the old window it was
possible just browse the section where the app may be located and find it.

So the new window is definitely not an improvement in my view.

Installing xdg-desktop-portal-kde solved it for me.

Not happy about the change though. KDE devs reworked the "Open with" dialog and
not for the better, IMO. Now it has huge icons that occupy several pages, no
organization, no way to reduce the icon size. The old dialog had everything
neatly organized, even showed what section the target app belonged to
(Development, Internet, Multimedia, etc). With the old dialog one could find
the app even without knowing its exact name, just by browsing the related
sections. Anyhow, it words.

Suppose there's a need to open a jpg file with, say, kwrite. So:

1. Open Dolphin

When doing the above, Dolphin used to show a dialog that would allow to select

Bookworm upgrade to 5.26.90 resulted in a huge App Launcher icon size

2023-01-31 Thread local10
Hi,

The latest Bookworm upgrade to 5.26.90 [1] resulted in the Application Launcher
widget's icon becoming a huge, ridiculous size[2]. It's now about 10 times
larger than what it used to be before the upgrade and, respectively, takes 10x
times more space on the task bar.

I tried, without success:

  1. Removing the App Launcher from the Task Bar and then adding it back again
  2. Changing the App Launcher icon to another icon (it was also huge ) and
then reverting back to the default
  3. Logging out of KDE and then logging back in again

Any ideas? Thanks

1. https://pastebin.com/2NQM7e6C
2. Look at the very bottom of the image, the App Launcher icon is now about 10
times larger than what it used to be.

That I cannot easily do. I've already overwritten the backup I had of the state
before upgrading to 5.25, so it's gone for me now. Look at this picture
https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=151052, then reduce the icon size to
about the size of the text next to it, the vertical size of each entry would
also be reduced to maybe 70% of what it is now and that would be how it was
before.

It's reasonable, just takes more space than it used to. You could probably
increase the icon size even more by 10-20% and it would still look reasonable,
just would take even more space.

IIRC, there used to be a way to change the icon size on the Task Manager's

However, the Dolphin File Manager doesn't show the comment content in the

You could try adding "*.*" as a pattern (without quotes) to one of the known
file types and see how well it works. Personally I'm not sure there's a lot of

Elisa looks good but also immediately starts scanning for audio files and it

TLDR: poor interface + change of behavior in 22.04 + user error

Anyway, I've figured out what happened. When Juk starts for the first time (or
after a crash) it opens the "Folder List" window that allows to specified the
folders where one keeps his audio files and also the folders that should be
excluded. The user's home folder (e.g, /home/luser ) is added by default as the
folder to be searched for audio files and if one mistakenly clicks "OK" then
Juk would start browsing through the home dir like crazy, adding all audio
files it could find, almost hanging the system if one has a lot of files.

To prevent this, I would add my home dir to the list of folders to be excluded
from search and then would add all audio folders manually and  that was working
fine, until the version 22.04.

In 22.04, Juk allows to add a folder to be played but doesn't allow to load any
files if they are located under one of the folders that are to be excluded. Of
cause, no error message or any indication is given about what went wrong.

No errors and/or exceptions are reported when starting Juk from the konsole: it
starts and behaves as I described in my previous message, that is, shows the
directory but doesn't show any files.

Are there any Juk config settings besides the following?
  1. ~/.config/jukrc
  2. ~/.local/share/juk

Hi,

Juk v22.04.1 seems to hang for me. Tried the following but couldn't resolve the
issue.

Any ideas? Thanks

1. mv ~/.config/juk ~/.config/juk.old
2. mv ~/.local/share/juk ~/.local/share/juk.old
3. Open juk
4. Use Ctrl+D to add a directory with about 20 audio files
5. Juk seems to hang, CPU utilization goes to 50%
6. Open the same dir as in the step 4 in vlc, vlc opens the dir and plays the
audio file in it without any issues

I didn't delete it right away and still have a backup copy but it just looks
like the two binary files in that dir got corrupted and not much can be done
other than to delete them and start afresh. For example, deleting just
"~/.local/share/juk/cache" would not resolve the issue.

The problem is that Juk is a flaky app with a lot of issues (many of which go
unresolved for years). But still it kind of works.

Any issues with Juk in Bookworm?

2022-06-17 Thread local10
Hi,

Juk started to behave a bit weirdly for me when adding a new directory to play
so I closed it using the "File > Quit" menu option and it closed. But now when
Juk is started it fails to show its window and appears to be hanging and needs
to be killed.

If the "~/.config/jukrc" file is deleted then Juk starts and shows its window
but all the menus (File, Edit, Player, etc) are disabled and clicking on them
has no effect.

Vlc still works and plays audio files as it should.

Hi,

Is it just me or Kwrite/Kate Tools menu is now missing some entries that used

The keyboard shortcuts still work, I think, but the above menu entries can no

Yes, after installing kwin-addons the "Flip Switch" and other task switchers

works a lot slower than it used to in Bullseye, definitely not fun to use. Is
it just me or that's how it works now?

Do you mean that "Flipt switch" and other task switchers that relied on the

Bookwork KDE task switchers

2022-04-23 Thread local10
Hi,

After migrating from Bullseye to Bookworm, it appears that the only task
switchers available to me in Bookworm are "Breeze", "Breeze Dark" and "Breeze
Twilight", no other task switchers are available.

Currently I use Breeze, which works but I would prefer to get the "Flip Switch"
back that I used to use in Bullseye. Not sure why other task switchers have
disappeared, maybe I'm missing a package or maybe the KDE compositor crashed?
Had a similar issue some years back when the KDE compositor crashed and KDE
disabled it afterwards, resulting in the loss of some task switchers, IIRC.

Any ideas? Thanks

So I have upgraded from Bullseye to Bookworm. The upgraded wasn't completely
smooth, there were some errors and some packages "dist-upgrade" failed to
upgrade. But running "safe-upgrade" and then "full-upgrade" afterwards has
upgraded them.

The upgrade has solved some issues I had with Bullseye, added a couple of minor
new issues but overall I'm happy with the upgrade: nothing is really broken,
everything seems to work fine. Also, Bookworm seems to be a bit more responsive
(the apps open and close a bit quicker) and it seems like it's using less RAM
too. Comparing Bullseye and Bookworm, Bookworm seems to be a better release to
me.

That's what I was concerned about. I usually use "aptitude dist-upgrade" to
upgrade between releases, so will it catch a situation like that or will I have
to manually ensure that all KDE packages are of the same version?

Also, what is the current state of KDE/X in testing, are all packages of the
same Plasma/KDE version?

I don't recall specifically installing anything like that. Unless something was

For a new user automatic screen locking work properly, that is, the system
locks the screen after a specified amount of time. Not sure why it doesn't do
this for my regular account though.

Automatic screen locking

2020-08-13 Thread local10
Hi,

For some reason automatic screen locking stopped working for me. It used to
work some time back but then just stopped. I currently have the "Lock screen
automatically after" set to one minute (for test purposes) but it just doesn't
lock the screen even after 5 minutes. I can still lock the screen manually
though.

Any ideas? Thanks

I discovered that the issue was caused by OpenGL compositing crashing Kwin and
thus KDE disabled OpenGL and all affects that relied on OpenGL compositing
(including  the Flip Switch task switcher effect I used) were disabled as well.

Re-enabling OpenGL detection and then restarting KDE solved the issue.

KDE Task switcher developed an issue

2020-08-07 Thread local10
Hi,

Starting about 2-3 weeks ago the KDE task switcher developed an weird issue on
my system. The way it used to work, when Alt+Tab was pressed the task switcher
would present a list of active windows[1] and then using the upper and lower
arrows I could select the window I wanted from the list. Now when when Alt+Tab
was pressed the task switcher does not show any list at all, it just switches
to the previously used window.

I reinstalled KDE and then reinstalled all installed packages thinking
something may have corrupted overtime but the issue is still there. See the
following pic for the task manager settings:

Yes, this is exactly what I meant. In previous versions of KDE login screen (or

now. I was using it for so long I forgot one can access the console via

Your post game me some ideas, and I tried to run Kcalc as root and it worked[1]
just fine. So it looks like KDE is simply preventing some apps to be run as

I'm experiencing an issue with disappearing icons in the Application Menu
launcher. Maybe it's related to the issue you have, maybe not. Some icons in
the Power / Session menu have disappeared (e.g. Switch user, Suspend,
Hibernate, Reboot) yet some are still there (Lock, Logout, Shutdown). I think
it happened after I removed from and and added to the favorites some of the
Power / Session menu items.

Also, the KDE icon in the Application Launcher (not to be confused with the
Application Menu launcher) has absolutely ridiculous size when used with used a
vertical taskbar (I tried it with the vertical taskbar width of about 8-10% of
the screen width). Had to switch to the Application Menu launcher because of
that.

Buster: Has anyone been able to run an app as root in KDE?

2018-10-01 Thread local10
Hi,

Has anyone been able to run an app, any app, as root in KDE? If yes, how do you
do it? I tried the following approach with several apps  but it did not work
for me:

1. Select an application launcher (tried it with Kwrite, Konqueror) > RMB click
> Edit launcher (or Edit Application) > Application > Advanced Options > User >
[X] check Run as a different user > User name > root

2. Launch the app, it launches, asks for the (root) password, enter the
password, click OK, the app just sits there for several minutes. Trying to
close the Enter password window results in "Application kdesu is not
responding" and offers to terminate application kdesu. I can terminate it but
that's about it.

Thanks

Just to get it out of the way, I reinstalled kde-standard to include all
recommended packages. So now all recommended packages for kde-standard have
been installed on my box but "Run as a different user" just does not work for
me.

Here's what I did:

1. Select an application launcher (tried it with Kwrite, Konqueror, Konsole) >
RMB click > Edit launcher (or Edit Application) > Application > Advanced
Options > User > [X] check Run as a different user > User name > root

2. Launch the app, it launches, asks for the (root) password, enter the
password, click OK, the app just sits there for minutes. Trying to close the
Enter password window results in "Application kdesu is not responding" and
offers to terminate application kdesu. I can terminate it but that's about it.

Any ideas? Thanks

Buster: (Alt+F2) Can't find a way to "Run as a different user"

2018-09-08 Thread local10
Hi,

Occasionally I need to run some KDE apps as root. The way I used to do it was
as follows: press Alt+F2, then type, for example, Dolphin, then click on the
"wrench" in the "Run Dolphin" option, then check "Run as a different user"
checkbox, enter the username (root) and password. Dolphin then would start and
run with root privileges.

Now in Buster, when I press Alt+F2, then type Dolphin, I see the "Run Dolphin"
option but it no longer has "Run as a different user" wrench icon, instead it
has "Run in Terminal Window" that does not seem to allow to run as a different
user. The command line plugin is enabled.

Any ideas? Thanks

I understand your position about recommended packages and in case of KDE it
looks like it does make a lot of sense. I used to install recommended packages
until I came across packages that recommended all kind of questionable stuff,
in my view, (some g**gle services, etc, if I remember correctly). After that
incident I put in a restriction on recommended packages.  Ran Wheezy for years
without installing recommended packages and it never was much of a problem, to
the point that I even stopped bothering looking at what packages are
recommended.

I think I will keep the restriction in place for now and just pay more
attention to the recommended packages section.

Thanks for your help

I'm actually using a vertical one too, it makes more sense to me with the shape
of LCD screens. It really depends on what you set as the Clipboard history
size. If you set it to 7 or less than the size of Clipboard window will be
sufficient to fit all the items. If you set it to more than 7 then scrolling
will be necessary, which what I was trying to avoid. It's possible to have a
larger Clipboard window if a shortcut key is defined  in "Configure Clipboard >
Shortcuts configuration > Open Klipper at mouse position", which what I will be
using.

Anyway, here are the questions I still would like to find the answers to:

1. KDE > Power / Session menu does not have Suspend or Hibernate options. How
can I get them back, if possible? I currently don't have sddm installed but
when I did it did not seem to help. Can suspend the PC by using "systemctl
suspend" from the terminal.

3. Device Notifier widget shows Floppy Disk device even though my PC does not
have a floppy disk. Is there a way to remove it?

Thanks
