KDE catastrophe after June 5 dist-upgrade
Dear maintainers, I use Debian Testing. Before today, my previous dist-upgrade was on May 28, at which points all packages were up to date and KDE 5.4 was running smoothly. Today (June 5) I again dist-upgrade my laptop and now KDE is very broken. The following is a list of many of the KDE-related packages upgraded today (others not related to KDE/Qt/KF5/etc were removed to the best of my ability): kde-cli-tools kde-cli-tools-data kde-config-cron kde-config-sddm kde-style-oxygen-qt5 kded5 kdenetwork-filesharing kdesdk-scripts kdesdk-thumbnailers kdevelop kdevelop-data kdevplatform8-libs libreoffice-kde python-kde4 qml-module-org-kde-draganddrop qml-module-org-kde-extensionplugin qml-module-org-kde-games-core qml-module-org-kde-kcoreaddons qml-module-org-kde-kio qml-module-org-kde-kquickcontrols qml-module-org-kde-kquickcontrolsaddons qml-module-org-kde-kwindowsystem baloo-kf5 kdegames-card-data-kf5 libkf5activities5 libkf5baloo5 libkf5balooengine5 libkf5baloowidgets-bin libkf5baloowidgets5 libkf5bookmarks-data libkf5bookmarks5 libkf5completion-data libkf5completion5 libkf5config-bin libkf5config-data libkf5configcore5 libkf5configgui5 libkf5configwidgets-data libkf5configwidgets5 libkf5declarative-data libkf5declarative5 libkf5emoticons-bin libkf5emoticons-data libkf5emoticons5 libkf5globalaccel-bin libkf5globalaccel-data libkf5globalaccel5 libkf5globalaccelprivate5 libkf5iconthemes-bin libkf5iconthemes-data libkf5iconthemes5 libkf5kcmutils-data libkf5kcmutils5 libkf5kdegamesprivate1 libkf5kdelibs4support-data libkf5kdelibs4support5 libkf5khtml-bin libkf5khtml-data libkf5khtml5 libkf5kiocore5 libkf5kiofilewidgets5 libkf5kiontlm5 libkf5kiowidgets5 libkf5krosscore5 libkf5krossui5 libkf5newstuff-data libkf5newstuff5 libkf5notifications-data libkf5notifications5 libkf5notifyconfig-data libkf5notifyconfig5 libkf5package-data libkf5package5 libkf5parts-data libkf5parts-plugins libkf5parts5 libkf5people-data libkf5people5 libkf5peoplebackend5 libkf5peoplewidgets5 libkf5quickaddons5 libkf5service-bin libkf5service-data libkf5service5 libkf5style5 libkf5su-bin libkf5su-data libkf5su5 libkf5sysguard-bin libkf5sysguard-data libkf5texteditor5 libkf5textwidgets-data libkf5textwidgets5 libkf5wallet-bin libkf5wallet-data libkf5wallet5 libkf5webkit5 libkf5xmlgui-bin libkf5xmlgui-data libkf5xmlgui5 libkf5xmlrpcclient-data libkf5xmlrpcclient5 qtdeclarative5-kf5declarative plasma-pa libpoppler-qt4-4 libpoppler-qt5-1 libqt4-dbus libqt4-declarative libqt4-designer libqt4-help libqt4-network libqt4-opengl libqt4-qt3support libqt4-script libqt4-scripttools libqt4-sql libqt4-sql-mysql libqt4-sql-sqlite libqt4-svg libqt4-test libqt4-xml libqt4-xmlpatterns libqtcore4 libqtdbus4 libqtgui4 python-qt4 python-qt4-dbus python-qt4-sql python3-pyqt4 qtcore4-l10n frameworkintegration After the dist-upgrade I ran apt-get autoremove as I usually do. I did safe-upgrade yesterday, from sid. All works nicely. Many others reported such also here. I suggest you carefully check if required packages are installed. Re: KDE catastrophe after June 5 dist-upgrade
In your list I spotted sddm package to be removed. You better install this first, as this provides the login manager. If disk space is a reason for running it, get a bigger disk instead of damaging the kde ;) First i would reinstall all autoremoved packages especially the libkf5* ones and the sddm as mentioned before. A network connection can be created without kde, because there should always the good old text based shell to work with. I am on testing and be very carefull with updating, because I use this machine for may daily work and business. Damaging because of having the newest kde packages is here not an option. This means I read this mailinglist very carefully, especially the mails from martin. In addition I wait some days or some more to be sure that there is no huge bug killing the system. For bugreport information by installting I use apt-listbugs, apt-listchanges. If a bug comes up when the update runs, I discard the update and read the bugreport, to decide to update or not. And the last bastion is a full rsync backup for restoring the whole machine back to the last state before update. This may sound a bit pedantic and crazy, but I you are on testing, you do never know what shows up. And for less adrenalin use stable :) Good luck, -- Holger

Just don´t. If apt wants to remove a ton of packages it may be breaking your system. Feel free to ask here first. Cause you basically removed a good part of Plasma and KF with that command. Although I don´t see any sddm removed there, just a config module related to it, and I don´t see anything of the core of Plasma being removed, except maybe systemsettings, but that I think is optional, I think that removing the icon theme, the breeze theme could break things. If you follow Plasma 5 / KF 5 packaging development in Sid or Testing, then get yourself knowledgeable in package management. Things like you mention can happen at various states of packages being build as the order in which packages appear in testing is quite unpredictable in the current Debian development process. For that reason I have a second desktop installed. I choose MATE, cause that is even independent of Qt and C++, which helped a lot in GCC/G++ 5 transition. I suggest you try apt update apt install plasma-desktop plasma-framework sddm I think sddm didn´t get removed, but who knows. There is no "plasma-desktop" mentioned as being removed, yet with the packages that have been removed there cannot be any plasma-desktop meta package installed anymore. Ciao, -- Martin

Re: KDE catastrophe after June 5 dist-upgrade
No need to Cc me. Thanks. On Donnerstag, 9. Thing is, unintended removal of packages can happen when you upgrade at a point in time where an upload of related packages is only partially processed, compiled and made available in the archive by ftpmasters and the build servers. This is a temporary issue and not anything the maintainers can do much about. Thanks, -- Martin

Martin, Because I had simply dist-upgrade and auto-remove without intending to uninstall any major components, I thought this might be an issue to address with the maintainers, but I understand your points. Thank you very much for the advice. I did what you suggested and everything seems to be fixed now. In the future I will try to better understand the packaging system and the Debian way of doing things. Thanks to the maintainers! I have much respect for the great work they do here. Regards, Allen James

Hi Holger, Sorry this reply is a bit late but I wanted to thank you for taking the time to write all that out for me. I found it to be very useful. I have saved your advice on my disk and will refer to it in the future. Thanks again, Allen
