Hi! As you might know we the Qt/KDE team are preparing to remove Qt4
as [announced] in:

[announced]
<https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2017/08/msg6.html>

Currently Qt4 has been dead upstream and we are starting to have problems
maintaining it, like for example in the [OpenSSL 1.1 support] case.

[OpenSSL 1.1 support] <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=828522>

In order to make this move, all packages directly or indirectly depending on
the Qt4 libraries have to either get ported to Qt5 or eventually get
removed from the Debian repositories.

Therefore, please take the time and:
- contact your upstream (if existing) and ask about the state of a Qt5
port of your application
- if there are no activities regarding porting, investigate whether there are
suitable alternatives for your users
- if there is a Qt5 port that is not yet packaged, consider packaging it
- if both the Qt4 and the Qt5 versions already coexist in the Debian
archives, consider removing the Qt4 version

= Porting =

Some of us where involved in various Qt4 to Qt5 migrations [migration] and we
know for sure that porting stuff from Qt4 to Qt5 is much much easier and less
painful than it was from Qt3 to Qt4.

We also understand that there is still a lot of software still using Qt4.

Don't forget to take a look at the C++ API changes page [apichanges] whenever
you start porting your application.

[migration] http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/packagingqtbasedstuff.html
[apichanges] http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/sourcebreaks.html

For any questions and issues, do not hesitate to contact the Debian Qt/KDE
team at debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org

The removal is being tracked in <https://wiki.debian.org/Qt4Removal>

Lisandro,
on behalf of the Qt4 maintainers

Does the issue go away if you upgrade all your vlc packages? In that case we
need to tighten the dependencies in vlc.

Cheers

Dear Maintainer,

I was charging my laptop when I've detached the cable, then powerdevil crashed,

Bug#690294: phonon-backend-vlc breaks replaygain and fade in Amarok

2018-01-06 Thread Thierry CHEN
Raphael is not the only one to have the fade transitions lack on Amarok.
I use Debian/KDE since 2003 and Amarok suddenly missed that
fonctionality since wheezy I think. That is for me a reason that leaded
me to recently prefer Guayadeque that lacks many other things that
Amarok has. But the way that Amarok cuts lovely sounds is really unbearable.

Don't know if this post will help to solve that issue and it's a shame
because Amarok is realy good for all the rest and I really miss it.

The fixed phonon-vlc will migrate to testing tomorrow. You can pull it
from unstable, or just temporarily switch to phonon-gstreamer for today.

VLC 3.0.0 entered Testing, and Dragon and Amarok started to crash.

Could it have been possible to kinda stop VLC upload because some depended
packages breaks? That would be nice in this case.

Bug#884981: phonon-backend-vlc: FTBFS with libvlc9

2017-12-22 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz

Control: fixed 0.9.1-1
Control: affects 0.9.0-2

I just noticed that I mixed up the version numbers. The version from
experimental actually builds fine, only the version in unstable is
affected.

Could you please update the package in unstable?

Thanks!
Adrian

Bug#884981: phonon-backend-vlc: FTBFS with libvlc9

2017-12-22 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
Source: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.9.1-1
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

Hello!

After vlc_3.0.0-1 was uploaded, phonon-backend-vlc started to FTBFS [1]:

In file included from /<>/src/backend.cpp:45:0:
/usr/include/vlc/plugins/vlc_common.h: At global scope:
/<>/src/utils/libvlc.h:33:24: error: invalid use of qualified-name
'LibVLC::self'
 #define libvlc LibVLC::self->vlc()

declaration
/<>/src/utils/libvlc.h:33:28: error: expected unqualified-id
before '->' token
 #define libvlc LibVLC::self->vlc()
^

This is particularly annoying as it prevents multiple KDE packages
being built in Debian Ports due to the lack of support for cruft in
the DAK implementation being used there:

(sid-m68k-sbuild)root@nofan:/# apt build-dep kontactinterfaceReading package
lists... Done
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 builddeps:kontactinterface : Depends: libkf5parts-dev (>= 5.35.0~) but it is
not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
(sid-m68k-sbuild)root@nofan:/#

See also [2].

It would therefore be good to fix this issue as soon as possible
as it makes the buildds in Debian Ports attempt to build the KDE
packages repeatedly, each third failed attempt resulting in an
error mail being sent to the buildd admins.

Thanks,
Adrian

This could be fixed by uploading phonon-backend-vlc from experimental to
unstable and causing it to be rebuilt against the new vlc.

I'll try to do this tonight, but I can't promise I'll get to it.

Bug#875088: [phonon-backend-vlc] Future Qt4 removal from Buster

2017-09-09 Thread Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer
Source: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.9.0-2
Severity: wishlist
User: debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org
Usertags: qt4-removal

Hi! As you might know we the Qt/KDE team are preparing to remove Qt4
as [announced] in:

[announced]
<https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2017/08/msg6.html>

Currently Qt4 has been dead upstream and we are starting to have problems
maintaining it, like for example in the [OpenSSL 1.1 support] case.

[OpenSSL 1.1 support] <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=828522>

In order to make this move, all packages directly or indirectly depending on
the Qt4 libraries have to either get ported to Qt5 or eventually get
removed from the Debian repositories.

Therefore, please take the time and:
- contact your upstream (if existing) and ask about the state of a Qt5
port of your application
- if there are no activities regarding porting, investigate whether there are
suitable alternatives for your users
- if there is a Qt5 port that is not yet packaged, consider packaging it
- if both the Qt4 and the Qt5 versions already coexist in the Debian
archives, consider removing the Qt4 version

= Porting =

Some of us where involved in various Qt4 to Qt5 migrations [migration] and we
know for sure that porting stuff from Qt4 to Qt5 is much much easier and less
painful than it was from Qt3 to Qt4.

We also understand that there is still a lot of software still using Qt4.

Don't forget to take a look at the C++ API changes page [apichanges] whenever
you start porting your application.

[migration] http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/packagingqtbasedstuff.html
[apichanges] http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/sourcebreaks.html

For any questions and issues, do not hesitate to contact the Debian Qt/KDE
team at debian-qt-kde@lists.debian.org

The removal is being tracked in <https://wiki.debian.org/Qt4Removal>

Lisandro,
on behalf of the Qt4 maintainers

With phonon-backend-vlc KDE is unable to play sounds at all. Instead sounds
like "preview" in Dolphin are played using the
internal pc-speaker. Also i have read, that this backend requires VLC 1.1.4,
which is not shipped in Squeeze. Perhaps
this may get the sound to work properly.

The vlc packaging now split the plugins from the binaries so it's possible to
depend only on the plugins. Depending on what phonon-backend-vlc uses, please
switch the Depends on vlc to vlc-plugin-base (audio outputs, almost all access
plugins, codecs, muxers, etc) and if required

- vlc-plugin-video-outputs (video output plugins)
- vlc-plugin-video-splitter (video splitter plugins)
- vlc-plugin-visualization (audio visualization plugins)

Bug#841448: phonon-backend-vlc: switch from vlc to vlc-plugin-base

2016-10-20 Thread Sebastian Ramacher
Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.9.0-1
Severity: wishlist

The vlc packaging now split the plugins from the binaries so it's possible to
depend only on the plugins. Depending on what phonon-backend-vlc uses, please
switch the Depends on vlc to vlc-plugin-base (audio outputs, almost all access
plugins, codecs, muxers, etc) and if required

- vlc-plugin-video-outputs (video output plugins)
- vlc-plugin-video-splitter (video splitter plugins)
- vlc-plugin-visualization (audio visualization plugins)

Regards

I think the problem is that the virtual package phonon-backend is provided by
 phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-null, phonon-backend-vlc, phonon4qt5-
 backend-gstreamer

That is a problem but not this one. I've fixed the virtual package stuff now.

This problem seems to be that vlc loads its GUI plugin.
The vlc GUI is Qt5 so this creates the conflict crashing the application.

Bug #755154 in vlc was supposed to fix this.

Michael, I supposed you have *vlc* = 2.2.1-1 installed?
If so does reinstalling them help? Maybe the plugin cache is in some way
corrupt.

Cheers,
Felix

I have seen crashes also with Digikam and Amarok which went away after I
purged phonon-backend-vlc and phonon4qt5-backend-vlc packages. It was not
sufficient to just select gstreamer backend in systemsettings. I bet this sets
the new default for Phonon 4 for Qt 5, but not for Phonon 4 for Qt 4.

Thanks,

I seriously missed this part. Indeed, there is something fishy here.

By the waythe backtrace was not in the original maio. Anyways I'll see why we
have this mix up here.

Hi,

since a few days ago, quasselclient started crashing. Backtrace is
attached.

The problem pointed at a phonon related problem. I did have
phonon-backend-vlc installed.
Replacing phonon-backend-vlc with phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer made
quasselclient work properly again.

Looks like it might be a Qt4/Qt5 mixup related problem.

Bug#764490: phonon-backend-vlc: backend can't access soundcards with lots of channels / 24 bit only

2014-10-08 Thread Richard Oax

Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.8.0-2
Severity: normal

I use a RME HDSP 9652 with 26 channels. When I try to use VLC via Alsa
(Pulseaudio doesn't work at all), I get the message:
alsa audio output error: cannot commit hardware parameters: Operation
not permitted

This is caused by VLC thinking that it could open the RME card in some
way that it can't. The RME card can only be opened via the hw:
interface with 24 bit samples and the full channel count. A lot of
applications do this the right way (e.g. Aqualung, web browsers etc.).

Could you please me tell me if this is an upstream bug or a debian
related bug?

Thank you.

Dear maintainer,

VLC from wheezy-backports needs libvlccore7 as dependency. phonon-backend-vlc
from wheezy (there is not version of backports) needs libvlccore5 as
dependency. Both are incompatible, so I cannot install goldendict with phonon-
backend-vlc support (but it is installable with phonon-backend-null).

Thanks for your job, goodbye!

Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.7.0-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

since I upgraded to Phonon 4.7 and Phonon-VLC 0.7, changing playback volume in
Amarok
is broken.
rdieter on IRC pointed out that this is probably
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327279,
and indeed as stated there, re-compiling this package unmodified against current
unstable (to ensure it is built against libphonon) fixes volume changes in
Amarok.
It'd be great if someone could trigger a re-build, or re-upload, of the VLC
backend.
It may also be a good idea to cherry-pick
https://projects.kde.org/projects/kdesupport/phonon/phonon/repository/revisions/f278a93493ac04ce04d48e8e5b5158caa0621ce3
so that other backends still using the old style of environment (whatever that
may be) continue to work. I did not try though whether that patch alone helps.

Kind regards
Ralf

Bug#730131: phonon-backend-vlc: Changing volume in KDE applications broken

2013-12-08 Thread Ralf Jung
Hi again,

phonon-backend-vlc already has a strict build dependency on libphonon-dev (=
4:4.7.0.0). So whatever fixed the bug was not libphonon 4.7 but something
 from
 your build environment.
The next version of the Phonon libraries has been released:
http://apachelog.wordpress.com/2013/12/06/phonon-4-7-1-phonon-gstreamer-4-7-1-phonon-vlc-0-7-1-engage-stabilization/
It contains the aforementioned patch. Whether the patch is actually
necessary or not, the re-build caused by the new version plus the patch
should fix this issue.

Kind regards
Ralf

libphonon 4.7 but something from your build environment.

Anyway, this means that the patch from the bug report is necessary,
 binNMU may not be enough.
Now that's strange. I re-built the package unchanged (i.e., without the
upstream patch) in pbduilder, right after doing cowbuilder --update.
So there shouldn't be anything odd left in my build environment, right?

Kind regards
Ralf

Bug#719874: phonon-backend-vlc causes Knotify to crash at the boot up of Debian '7' Stable + KDE

2013-08-16 Thread J4R0K4
Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.6.0-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Dear Maintainer,
I have found that phonon-backend-vlc causes to crash Knotify 1 of 2 times I
boot up my computer with Debian 7 Stable + KDE 4.8. My system is up-to-date and
is a relative clean install.

When I boot up the system, KDE remains too long to completely start up and then
it shows the KDE bug report message saying that Knotify has crashed. After
that, I can close the bug report and the system appears to work without
problems. The problem is that 1 of 2 times I boot up Debian Stable, KDE take
more time to completely boot up and then the first thing that the system shows
me is an error saying that Knotify has crashed.

Reading the KDE bug report of Knotify I realized that the problem is phonon-
backend-vlc, because if I use phonon-backend-gstreamer there is no problem
anymore.

If I can help you please tell me.
Thanks you for your attention, regards.

It's being reproduced daily at

This doesn't help neither but it will nicely show when it's fixed.

Bug#669878: Reproduced 669878 - Could not perform immediate configuration on 'phonon-backend-vlc'

2013-01-25 Thread Andy Simpkins
Ran into this problem today at the cambridge BSP when performing a
dist-upgrade from squeeze.

again the reported problem was:

E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'phonon-backend-vlc'. Please
see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details.

I performed apt-get upgrade as reccomended then tried dist-upgrade again still
failing with the same error

I got out of the problem by
apt-get install apt initramfs-tools nfs-common
where initramfs-tools nfs-common were required to be upgraded because of
increased dependancy requirements.

I guess this doesn't help resolve the bug, but at least shows that it is
reproduceable.

BR
Andy

NOTE: CC'd to debian-release at request of JMW as this will affect dist-

Apparently a loop make the apt resolving unstable, and a little change

And if that is the real problem, we will upload a fix as soon as we (well, the

Bug#669878: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'phonon-backend-vlc'

2012-12-12 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I investigated this some more. According to jenkins.debian.net, the
problem was introduced between 2012-11-27T05:06:19 and
2012-11-28T05:07:29. The first failing log is available from
URL:
http://jenkins.debian.net/job/chroot-installation_squeeze_install_gnome_upgrade_to_wheezy/62/
 .

I extracted the set of downloaded packages, to see how these changed
to get some idea about the cause of this problem. These are the
changed versions between the working and the failing upgrade:

See the previous upload. As the changelog says, the upload you mention
is just a typo-fixing upload, there's no bug there. The previous upload
was meant to fix #691160 by doing some renaming. I guess _that_ might
have introduced a dependency loop, but I fail to see how that could go
through phonon-backend-vlc. What is a way to determine the actual loop?

Bug#689993: phonon-backend-vlc: no sound in amarok

2012-10-19 Thread Simon Brandmair
On 13.10.2012 09:27 (Saturday), Modestas Vainius wrote:

Especially pay attention to vlc-plugin-pulse if you're using PulseAudio or
 try
reordering sound devices in Phonon settings. Phonon upgrades have a nasty
habbit of breaking / renaming / reordering sound devices hence breaking
 current configuration.

I don't have pulse audio. But what fixed the problem partially for me, was
your advice of reordering the sound devices in the phonon settings: I had to
move the first working device up the the Music Category (with Prefer) so it
is the very first device.

As long as there is another first device which is not working and shaded gray
(it says This device is currently not available.), and therefore the
working device is the second one in the list, there is no sound. I think
there is a bug, because phonon should use the first *available* device in the
list (as it obviously did in version 0.5). While in version 0.6 it seems to
use the first device regardless if it is available or not.

Right now this behavior breaks amarok when I use the same config files on
different computers (via NFS or synced).

Cheers,
Simon

Bug#690294: phonon-backend-vlc breaks replaygain and fade in Amarok

2012-10-16 Thread Raphaël HALIMI

Le 13/10/2012 08:35, David Smith a écrit :

manually changing it (with the little speaker icon near the time counter) still
works, but replaygain and fade are broken.

Can you be more specific about unable to manipulate the sound volume
at some point?

Sorry, I couldn't see how to describe this problem better : what I
thought to be the software volume can be manipulated with Amarok's
little speaker icon. But now, I'm not sure anymore that this icon
represents software volume, because I just noticed that the volume
buttons on my keyboard change both the master volume in veromix'
plasmoid and on this little speaker icon in Amarok, which rather seems
to represent VLC's volume in pulseaudio. Being a long-time Amarok user,
I wrongly thought that this icon had the same function as the little
volume slider that was at the same place in Amarok 1.

fade is not (yet) supported by VLC phonon backend for Amarok. VLC is
simply lacking the implementation for the feature. See here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287124

Since fade is not supported by the VLC phonon backend, it's
recommended to disable fade-out in Amarok when you use the VLC phonon
backend.

I see. sorry, I didn't know. Now that you mention it, fade doesn't work
with Gstreamer backend either (but replaygain does).

For ReplayGain, can you make sure you don't have conflicting gain
tags? Check if your files have a replaygain_track_peak tag, and if
so, remove it.

As far as I know, Amarok itself does not calculate ReplayGain values,
you need to have a 3rd party app calculate it and store the
information in a ID3 tag.

I have just tested using mp3gain from Wheezy with the Amarok from
Wheezy and the ReplayGain feature in Amarok works fine for me here
with both the gstreamer and vlc backends. Of course, I made sure
ReplayGain was enabled in Amarok in the menu. If you've used older
mp3gain versions, it's very possible you could end up with conflicting
ReplayGain tags which is known to cause problems as Amarok doesn't
know which tag to use and may decide to use the wrong one (or
neither). Also, if you use a very old version of mp3gain, the tag
might get ignored by Amarok completely.

Most of my files are Ogg, but neither my MP3 files nor my Ogg files have
any replaygain tags in them (clementine, which can use replaygain values
stored in files as tags but can't calculate them - just as you say
Amarok 2 does - doesn't adjust the volume either).

IIRC Amarok 1 did calculate replaygain values (either by itself or by
calling mp3gain/vorbisgain, I'm not sure) and stored them in its config
directory. Since replaygain works in Amarok 2 with the Gstreamer
backend, I think Amarok 2 imported these values from Amarok 1's
configuration during first launch.

If you think this is normal behavior, feel free to close the bug, but
again, Amarok 2 with gstreamer backend seems to actually use those
replaygain values, which would indicate that they were correctly
imported from Amarok 1, and that the VLC backend indeed have a problem
using them.

To be honest, I don't really use phonon-backend-vlc, but back then, when
I tried both backends in order to decide which one to use, I noticed
this behavior, and now I decided to file a bugreport only to help the
Debian project, so I reinstalled it solely to do some tests for this
bugreport, but normally I use phonon-backend-gstreamer, I'm just waiting
for #690291 to be fixed.

I admit this is weird that I seem to be the only one in the Debian users
community to have these problems with both backends : I noticed them for
a long time, but no one ever reported them, could they both be caused by
another tool in the chain ? pulseaudio maybe ?

If you need more info, feel free to ask.

Regards,

2012-10-16 Thread David Smith
I see. sorry, I didn't know. Now that you mention it, fade doesn't work with
Gstreamer backend either (but replaygain does).

gstreamer + pulseaudio = fade working just fine for me. Make sure you
have fade enabled in your Amarok settings, it's a checkbox. Also, you
need to play more than 5s of the audio clip if you want it to fade on
stop. Amarok never fades on pause. You should have a
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio package. Let me know if the fade for
gstreamer is still giving you problems.

Most of my files are Ogg, but neither my MP3 files nor my Ogg files have any
replaygain tags in them (clementine, which can use replaygain values stored
in files as tags but can't calculate them - just as you say Amarok 2 does -
 doesn't adjust the volume either).

Sorry, in that case you should be using vorbisgain instead of mp3gain.
Amarok's volume slider isn't going to change from playing one file to
the next with ReplayGain enabled. Rather the music will just sound
louder or quieter automatically. The ReplayGain values are applied
while the file is being read, which is before it gets combined with
the Amarok volume. So you've got one volume control for Amarok and
with ReplayGain, all your songs should be at the same volume.

Yes, Amarok as a software application has it's own volume control
which is separate from the system volume and also separate from the
volume control of other applications.

If you think this is normal behavior, feel free to close the bug, but again,
Amarok 2 with gstreamer backend seems to actually use those replaygain
values, which would indicate that they were correctly imported from Amarok
1, and that the VLC backend indeed have a problem using them.

Your ReplayGain values only exist inside your old Amarok collections
database? Now that could be the problem. Although VLC has supported
ReplayGain for some time, I don't recall a method for Amarok feeding
ReplayGain values to VLC through Phonon. So if Amarok has got gain
values that VLC doesn't know about and can't get to from simply
reading the mp3 file, then those values probably are not going to
work. I'll have to dive back into the code again to make sure I
remember things correctly.

I'll take a look at it and report back next week sometime.

I think if I contact the Amarok team they'll probably tell me that the
method of keeping ReplayGain values in the collection database is
deprecated, as the whole industry is moving towards keeping that
information in the tags of each individual file. The reason for that
is because it doesn't make sense to spend days recalculating all your
ReplayGain values everytime you want to switch Audio Players :).

Bug#690294: phonon-backend-vlc breaks replaygain and fade in Amarok

2012-10-12 Thread Raphaël HALIMI
I downgraded (and rebooted to be sure) and this didn't change anything.
I'm really sorry, I admit that I completely forgot to check the version
of packages before submitting the bug report.

I downgraded putting this :

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: 1001

... in /etc/apt-preferences.d/pure-debian. Then, apt-get dist-upgrade
downgraded a small bunch of packages, including some vlc-related
packages (vlc, vlc-nox, libvlc5...).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with these APT preferences, I shouldn't
have anything that doesn't come from Debian; but both this bug and the
crackling one (information I added to #644901) are still happening, so
these bugs are not specific to dmo's version of vlc.

If there is anything else you want me to do to spot the origin of this
bug, feel free to tell me.

Bug#662103: phonon-backend-vlc: Pausing and resuming in Amarok changes volume

pushed to wheezy during my last set of updates, and I can confirm that
this new package fixes the issue for me too.

Bug#662103: phonon-backend-vlc: Pausing and resuming in Amarok changes volume to 100%

Hi all,

I can confirm that this bug currently still exists in wheezy which on my
up-to-date system is still 0.5.0+14.g382da0d-2. Is there any chance of
getting this fix backported into wheezy as it is causing my eardrums to
suffer on a regular basis :(

ATB,

Hi Mark, hi Debian Qt/KDE developers, hi Martin,

I'm using a pur sid installation as rolling release on my notebook.
So I have rebuilded the packages against an up to date sid repository
for my own. Furthermore I have removed, in my own build, the new
added conflict to the package phonon-backend-vlc because I could not
reproduce the bug #684130 neither with the 2.7.0 nor 2.9.0 debian
package from the experimental repository rebuilded for sid.
Tested with the vlc packages from main and from
  debian-multimedia.org.

Mark, thanks for uploading a new package which works with
 libmarblewidet13.

I tried installing it but as Detlev points out it conflicts with
phonon- backend-vlc due to bug 684130.

Thus I will test the package the conflict removed here as well and
report back. I hope that the conflict can be removed again.

I did so.

Digikam works nicely:

I can start digikam, browse pictures and view movie files. No crash.

I am using the following packages:

vlc-nox/sid uptodate 2.0.3-2
vlc-plugin-notify/sid uptodate 2.0.3-2
vlc-plugin-pulse/sid uptodate 2.0.3-2

together with a self-compiled 3.6-rc6 kernel on Debian Sid as of today.

I am uploading my (non chroot) 64 bit Digikam builds to for others to
test:

http://martin-steigerwald.de/tmp/debian/

Please consider removing the conflict to phonon-backend-vlc now that
neither Detlev nor Daniel nor me can reproduce the crash on start.

Dear Grey, please double check whether you have any deb-multimedia VLC
packages installed and check your VLC installation.

As to the references Andreas Tille posted:

- With the Amarok won´t start issue there were indeed deb-multimedia.org
packages involved:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2012/03/msg00038.html

- The second reference according to the reporter was with the original
packages.

Still given the mixed picture and three reports of no issues whatsoever I
kindly ask to remove the conflict so that the underlying bug can be fixed if
any still exists.

If need be I will ask around at debian-kde for others to test the Digikam
packages I uploaded with phonon-backend-vlc. Readers from debian-kde feel

Bug#683477: phonon-backend-vlc: No sound in KDE or Amarok

2012-08-02 Thread Sten Heinze
Do you have pulseaudio installed by chance?

Yes, and pulseaudio itself works. Running e.g. 'paplay
/usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg' plays correctly.

I also tried vlc directly, and while running 'vlc
/usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In.ogg' produces sound, only the first few
seconds are correct, then it speeds up and plays too fast until the end. Not
sure if that is related or different.

If possible, ask on IRC on #debian-kde in oftc.net mentioning this bug (and
please be patient, we may take some time to reply :-) )

I'm there and I did ask, but I can do it again.

Thanks for your reply!

Sten

Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.5.0+14.g382da0d-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I assume some update, but I am not sure. Sound in KDE is not
working for a few weeks now. It was working about a month ago.
I tried to find which updated deb caused the problem, but
could not pinpoint a single one (both vlc and the phonon
backend had minor updates since it worked last).

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?

Boot laptop, log in. No sound at login or at any other time.
No sound in System Settings or Amarok.

However, sound works when paplay (play command of pulseaudio)
is used. Sound sort of works when vlc is used on the command
line (some problems with the speed of which the sound is
 played though with dropped buffers).

Sound in KDE works with the gstreamer backend, sound in Amarok
 does not work with gstreamer.

Another, newly created account did not show any different
behavior, no sound in KDE or Amarok with VLC.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

 Sound.

Any pointers on where to look or what to test are highly appreciated.
The system is a up-to-date Debian/Wheezy; only boost packages (1.50.0)
are from unstable, no packages from experimental.

Hardware is a Thinkpad X201 laptop:
$ lspci |grep Audio

Definition Audio (rev 06)

The problem was solved by installing vlc-plugin-pulse, sound works in kde and
amarok now.

Alternatively sound also works after removing pulseaudio (instead of installing
the above package).

I'm closing this bug as the problem was solved.

Thanks,

thanks

Do you have pulseaudio installed by chance?

If possible, ask on IRC on #debian-kde in oftc.net mentioning this bug (and
please be patient, we may take some time to reply :-) )

Kinds regards, Lisandro.
