Bug#495697: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686: System hang when loading ACPI video module

System hangs when loading ACPI video kernel module. The system freezes
completely. Making sure video.ko is not loaded via
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist is a workaround to this problem.

As a general note: The system in question is a Samsung P55-Pro Notebook,
hw details can be found below.

The graphics chipset is an Intel X3100 (GM965), if that is not clear
 from the lspci output.

linux-image-2.6.24-1-686 is also affected by this problem.

test 2.6.26 from unstable installs just fine in testing.
thanks

Hi,

it seems that 2.6.26 (whether the debian package or the kernel.org
kernel) locks up after a while on Debian's DL385G1 systems.

After a while, sooner with more disk IO/filesystem load, the system
hangs: it continues to do stuff but everything involving disk hangs
forever.

The systems work just fine on a 2.6.25.10 kernel.

The servers have Opterons like this:
cpu family : 15
model : 33

so http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0808.0/0882.html might
explain it.

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.26-2
Severity: serious

The current versatile kernel doesn't boot in QEMU. This bug should
not stop 2.6.26 from migrating to testing though since versatile is
not a platform that is used a lot.

Aurelien Jarno looked at the problem and found:

| It's because I have enabled tickless options in the kernel. I don't
| know if it is actually a qemu or a kernel problem, but given we are
| close to the release, the best is simply to disable this options.
| Unfortunately I am afraid this will change the ABI...

I'll disable the option when we change the ABI.

Bug#495793: linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-686: kernel panic when running netstat

2008-08-20 Thread Alexander I. Gordeev
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-686
Version: 2.6.26-2~stable0
Severity: important

Hi!

I backported the linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-686 package using pbuilder to try
openvz on my etch server. It runs ok until I run netstat like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ netstat -ltn
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:34930.0.0.0:* LISTEN

tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:139 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

It produces several lines and then the machine hangs.
I was able to write down only these lines:

Bug#495817: linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64: apple usb modem does not work 05ac:1401

2008-08-20 Thread Sebastià Matas
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.24-6
Severity: important

Hi, I'm using a MacBookPro laptop with debian sid on it.

Unfortunatelly it has no MODEM (PSTN) and during hollidays I needed one.
The bad luck is that I read on an Ubuntu forum about the modem and that
it worked, but I missread, they refered to an internal modem, not the
USB one.

So I have now this useless (in linux, on MacOSX it works) usb modem.

lsusb shows:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 05ac:1401 Apple, Inc.

so it detects it as an Apple thing, but shows nothing more...

And here's the relevant part of cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

I've googled and found nothing about this modem working in linux.
I contacted Greg KH and he told me it should work with the kernel module
cdc-acm.

I've tried to modprobe cdc-acm but I can't see any /dev/ttyACM or
anything similar. So I presume the module does not work for this modem.

Furthermore, when I plug the modem dmesg shows this:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio

but does not load the cdc-acm module.
I try to modprobe it and dmesg shows:
usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_acm
drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c: v0.25:USB Abstract Control Model driver for
USB modems and ISDN adapters

but I find nothing under /dev that may be of use (no /dev/ttyACM0 or
/dev/cuaXX...

Any help will be appreciated.

Bug#495718: not kernel version dependent

2008-08-20 Thread Ferenc Wagner
Hi,

further tests show that the phenomenon does not depend on the exact
kernel version: I experienced failures with 2.6.25-2 and success with
2.6.26-1 as well. Which means it isn't a regression but the same
problem with both (and probably several other) kernel versions.

Bug#456763: reproducible on 2.6.25-2-amd64

2008-08-20 Thread Thiemo Nagel

Hello,

I can reproduce this problem with high reliability when putting load on
an encrypted filesystem using 'stress -d 10'. Then typing into
'Konsole' looks like that:

asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfkl;asdfj
kl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfj
kl;asdfjkl;aasdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjl;asdffjl;asddd
dfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;;;
asdfjkl;
;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;asdfjkl;

The results with 'Gnome Terminal' were similar, however up to now I
failed to see repeated keys on the text console.

The interesting thing is that the issue fails to reproduce when I'm
stress'ing the local disk without devmapper/LUKS.

My lvm2 setup looks like that (I did that with the lenny installer, I
have the impression that it's a bit too complicated...):

PV /dev/sda5
|
\_ VG big_volume_group
   |
   \_ LV /dev/big_volume_group/big_log_vol
  |
  \_ PV /dev/dm-1
 |
 \_ VG crypto-VG
|
+- LV /dev/crypto-VG/swap_lv -- mounted swap
|
\- LV /dev/crypto-VG/root_lv -- mounted /

Output of pvdisplay, vgdisplay and lvdisplay is attached.

I'm also attaching the system configuration info generated by reportbug.
In case you need more info, just ask. I'm willing to investigate further.

Kind regards,

Thiemo Nagel

fyi, vserver builds fine on ia64, but I haven't been able to boot test
it yet. I'm debugging another problem on my test box at the moment,
but should hopefully be able to boot test later today.

vserver flavour boots fine on ia64, but I'm not sure how to test
it. When I attempt to start a vserver, it fails with:

dl380g5:/home/dannf# vserver vserver1 start
vc_migrate_context(): Function not implemented
/proc/uptime can not be accessed. Usually, this is caused by
procfs-security. Please read the FAQ for more details

Failed to start vserver 'vserver1'

I tried messing w/ the proc security attributes as described in the

amd64 install, so its not an ia64-specific issue.

Bug#355883: Same problem here

2008-08-20 Thread Kumar Appaiah
Hi!

Just wanted to add that this bug doesn't exist in the latest kernel I
got from the SCM (2.6.27-rc3). So it got fixed in between 2.6.26 and
now somewhere; I couldn't zero in on the patch which Adam pointed
out. But anyway...

On Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 09:44:10AM +0200, Adam Cécile (Le_Vert) wrote:

Sorry Bastian, but it's sort of unfair that you reduced the
severity. Granted that it was raised by a non-maintainer, and that you
don't use USB sticks. But that doesn't imply that all users won't have
it.

In fact, I'd really want this to be RC, but I don't want to fall into
anyone's bad books, so I'll just stop with making a request for a
severity upgrade.

I found the attached patch somewhere on lkml. It's targeted for kernel
2.6.27. I can confirm this patch fix the issue with my stick.

This patch hasn`t taken to Linus`s tree yet but has been queued by
Greg K-H, guess we`ll see it merged until 2.6.27.
I hope it will be merged into debian's package before it reach main
 linux development tree.
If not I'll have to downgrade to 2.6.25...

The latest version on git.kernel.org seems to have his fix. Commit

problems with cirrusfb.ko

2008-08-20 Thread Arthur Marsh
I've reported this to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but
wondered if anyone has experienced any successes or failures in using
framebuffer support with the Cirrus Logic GD 5465 [Laguna] VGA card.

The motherboard is an Intel 440LX, and the kernel is using the Debian
config options, with 686 architecture and low latency desktop selected.

I've noticed a couple of discrepancies in the debian/control file of
linux-2.6 package, and I can't really tell whether those are bugs or
 not:

 2. There is linux-modules-2.6.26-1-xen-686 package. All other
linux-module packages are virtual (corresponding linux-image packages
provide them). It might be that this is the package containing the
modules for domU, but in that case package description needs to be
 corrected.

I believe these modules are for dom0 rather than for domU, with the intent
that the associated image package (if it were actually fully functional) be
shareable for both dom0 and domU?

But then, in that case I would expect the image package to also include
various non-hardware-related modules that are useful in a domU context.

Re: Scheduling linux-2.6 2.6.26-3

I'd like to schedule the upload of linux-2.6 2.6.26-3 for monday.

The following things are still missing:
 - VServer support for alpha, ia64, s390 and sparc. s390 does not build.
Others untested. It should at least include all arches which had them
   in Etch.

Well, for etch the vserver build for alpha was added in spite of my
objections that the user base was not large enough to warrant it; so I don't
have any intention to work on it for lenny either. If someone cares about
this image, they should go ahead and do the work themselves.
