kernel-2.6.9 config for G5

Hi,

I'm trying to set up 2.6.9 kernel on a dual-1.8 G5, installed with di
using the make pmac_defconfig as bases and setting the smp.
the kernel boots fine but hangs on with the following

RAMDISK: cramfs filesystem found at bock 0
RAMDISK: image too big! (4728KiB/4096KiB)
VFS: Cannot open root device sda4 or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct root= boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

G5 report problematic succes

2004-04-01 Thread Eric Deveaud

Hi

today was quite work free, please don't repeat it to my boss ;-)
I started playing seriously with the G5

booting the k-mib-ppc-beta-pre-10, in single mode and isntalling debian
thru debootstrap was quite simple.

just to note that debootstraps hangs (at least the one located on the
k-mib pre10) while trying to use libacl and libattr
fetching those libs from any debian mirror, and using dpkg to install
the 2 fautives, solved the problem.

yaboot setting was a little bit tricky until I realize that the guilty
was df output .
yabootconfig fail while trying to get the KERNDEV, KERNDIR, LINKDIR and
PARTITION

playing with bash man page, allow to understand the echo command
and to correct manualy the problem.

you should boot under OF (press option-commande-o-f at boot chime)

your disk is located under ultra2

you should use the following command
boot ultra2:#,yaboot

where # is the number of your Apple_Bootstrap partition

alternatively, you can boot on the install CD, execute a shell,
mount the partitions and chroot to /target in order to fix your

Reseted the pram with the magic key combo (option-command-p-r at boot

When I installed linux, I've reordered my parition in order to have the

my kernel is a fresh 2.4.20-pre11-ben0 from Tue Oct 29 with
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y

I've got the X sources by CVS-ing it from xfree86.org
build was OK, but now I figthing with the configuration.

as far as I see on the logs, X starts, detect the card, load the good
driver (ati and sub module radeon) that claims to support radeon
9000 but all I get is a black screen and the flat panel power
ligth flash 3 times , I have to kill X by ctrl-alt-del
but the problem, is that this black-screen remains even after killing X
I have to blind type or ssh to the machine or reboot in order to
continue ;-(

the logs reports no errors, just warnings about APM, DRI (DRI will be
the next step) and clomplians about radeon vbios.
(WW) RADEON(0): Video BIOS not detected, using default PLL parameters!

has anybody succeded on setting X with this combination radeon9000/17''

not reaaly an answer, but just some new insigth on the problem

kernel inclusion of CONFIG_FB_RADEON results on lost signal
with the flat panel plugged on ADC

but with the same settings, an iiyama CRT plugged on the DVI via a
DVI/VGA adaptator shows the console and X is working OK.

it seems, that the problem is related to the ADC port.

whille trying to boot on the debian-30r0-powerpc-binary-1, bad luck,
neither the ata100 drive, neither the SCSI disk are seen.

as far as I've understood my google search, I have to switch the
drive from the ata100 to the ata66 bus in order to be able to use it
under linux. This is the easy part.

and for the adaptec card support, I have to compile a fresh kernel
2.4.7

is there an iso of an install disk including such a kernel with the
29160 driver ?

if not I'll build a kernel on my pismo, an boot from disk as I
will perform a network install.

In this case I would like to know which is the magic incantation
to boot from the internal IDE drive. More exactly the way to find the
device name under OF.

I've done this long time ago while installing my pismo, but I don't

 Well, the 9000 series is the third generation of Radeon cores, and AFAIK
 it might be different enough to the earlier generations for it not to
 work out of the box. However, ATI has already submitted a patch to
 XFree86 to add support, it should be in 4.3.0 and could probably be

I'm facing a strange behaviour.

when the ram is plugged on. network become quitte unreachable.
ie, ping lost between 75-85% paquets
ssh to other mahine fail
fpt can't reach any host
but in the same time I can perform heavy compilation/calculs/etc...
it just affect the networking stuff.
NB the problem is not dependant on the slot I plug the ram
neither interleaving.
NB2 memory tools under MacOS (guru, techToolpro) claims there is no
problem with this.

when ram is unplugged, everithing is OK

I don't complain, I can live without this extra 32Mb, but I would like
to know what appens.
did it happens to one of you ?
what could be the reason ?

I find it strange, and was surprised by the message, I think it was
handed the same way as CDrom.

 If you put a ZIP cartridge into that drive and mount it
 appropriately using sdc1 or sdc5 or whatever the partition ends up
 being on there, it will work just fine, and the computer will realize
 that it's not a 1GB cartridge and treat it right.

yes it mounts perfectly.

 I have used both 100MB and 250MB ZIPs this way and they just work,

whaooo, I'll try a 250M as soon as possible.

 You can read and write whatever filesystems are supported with your

 Linux-only if you like.

it's yet done.
zig:~  cat /etc/fstab

/dev/zip  /zip-mac hfs rw,gid=110,user,noauto 0 0

go to the library, wake it up, and use th airport network, and finaly
go working

 If you only want the shutdown on power low, look into /usr/share/doc/pmud
 for the sample powerfail script, configure pmud to send a signal to init
 on low battery (man pmud), and set up init to run the powerfail script on
 power status change (man inittab).

OK I'll have to go into deeep RTFM whith thse man pages.
Thank's for pointing me to the rigth docs.

1) under console.
pressing ctrl-command-fn-F# (fn cause it's a laptop) just spit some
garbages characters.

alt-(leftt|rigth) arrow allow me to switch from ttyN to ttyN(-1|+1)
that's OK

2) under X
I can't switch back to console.

is there a way to switch from X(tty7) to console(tty1-6), or even to the
MOL sccreen (tty8)

sure, as startmol insmod his module, when quitting MacOS the modules

 Already done. Call 'startmol --loadonly' in an init script - that will
 load the 'mol' module and the 'sheep_net' networking module.

OK, but this way you let the mol module sleeping in the kernel...

MOL and kernel 2.4

2002-01-04 Thread Eric Deveaud

Hi,

today was a compil and setting day, but I'm stumped with a MOL problem.

- rsynced BenH kernel tree (2.4.17-ben0) and freshly compiled
uname -rv gives me 2.4.17-ben0 #2 Fri Jan 4 13:38:08 CET 2002

2) get and compiled from sources mol-0.9.60
   added -DEXPORT_SYMTAB to kernel_module/Makefile to compile.
   edited /etc/molrc to feet my configuration/needs.

3) start mol
this is where is the problem.

I can start mol as root (sudo startmol) but not as a lambda user.

I don't understand, because while browsing this list archive, I've seen
several posts claiming that Mol does not need to patch the kernel 2.4 as
it must for 2.2

are the only ways to allow mol for a lambda user

1) create a mol group, and play with sudo ?

2) load sheep_net and mol module at startup ?

3) wrapp the startmol to insmod and rmmod the mol modules

4) or I'm completly stupid and missed something

Eric

PS please don't answer me the solution is number 4 ;-))

 DON'T do disk bootable instead go to the console, copy the
 linux-kernel-2.2.18 to your /boot partition, name it vmlinux-2.2.18

 there is another step, relink /target/vmlinux to boot/vmlinux-2.2.18,
 then run:

 mkofboot -b /dev/hdaNN -m /usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot --root /dev/hdaYY

 where /dev/hdaNN is your Apple_Bootstrap partition, and /dev/hdaYY is
 your root partition. this will install a working bootstrap on your
 bootstrap partition making the disk immediatly bootable. after you
 boot into debian you still need to write your own /etc/yaboot.conf and
 rerun ybin.

instead of that I boot again under OF, and at boot prompt I use
hd:YY,/boot/vmlinux-2.2.18 root=/dev/hdaYY
setup apt, perform the minimal installation, setup yaboot.conf
and run mkofbot at this momment

 instead use:

   image=/boot/vmlinux-2.2.18 # or better point to a symlink
   partition=YY
   the rest as you have it.

hum... it seem that I haven't read enough man yaboot.conf
OK I will correct this,

 also if you kept macos, add a:

 macos=/dev/hdaCC which is your macos partition.

first note that the kernel 2.2.18pre21 on the debian install CD, dosn't
allow to boot the Ti

1) boot on the MacOS CD, use the Apple Hard disk tools to
create the partition scheme you want on the drive drive
eg: X Go for linux (free-space)
X Go for the MacOS system (HFS+)
X Go for the MacOS apps (HFS+)
X Go for the docs (HFS+)
X Mo/Go for a sharing MacOS - Linux partition (HFS)

2) install MacOS

3) grab a linux kernel 2.2.18, ramdisk, yaboot, yaboot.conf on the
   shared partition

4) get the SystemDisk tool from apple
   URL:ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/macosxserver/utilities/
   with this one note the number of the partition or the shared
   partition eg: XX

5) edit the yaboot.conf
eg:
init-message = \nDebian PPC\nhit TAB for boot options\n\n
timeout = 50
default = install

image=hd:XX,vmlinux-2.2.18
label=install
initrd=hd:XX,ramdisk.image.gz
initrd-size=8192
append=video=ofonly

6) reboot the Mac under OF (command-option-o-f)
   at boot-prompt type
boot hd:XX,yaboot

7) the debian installer is launched
   install debian as usual on the free-space partition previously
   created
   DON'T forget to create a Apple_Bootstrap partition of small size, in
   first place see URL:http://www.alaska.net/~erbenson/ mac-fdisk
   section
   note the /dev/hdaNN number of the Apple_Bootstrap partition
   note the /dev/hdaYY number of your / partition
   eg if you do the way described here, it should be /dev/hda11
   (/dev/hda1 to 9 are Mac drivers and /dev/hda10 your bootstrap
   partition)
   initialise swap
   format the linux partitions
   mount a previously initialized partition, the shared one.
   install base
   configure drivers
   configure base
   DON'T do disk bootable instead go to the console, copy the
   linux-kernel-2.2.18 to your /boot partition, name it vmlinux-2.2.18

8) reboot the computer under MacOS
   depending on the number of linux partition you've created, the
   previous XX number of the shared partition has changed, use
   SystemDisk again to get the new one, eg now it's ZZ

9) edit once again the yaboot.conf: modify the old XX to ZZ
   and insert a linux boot section as following
init-message = \nDebian PPC\nhit TAB for boot options\n\n
timeout = 50
default = debian

image=hd:ZZ,vmlinux-2.2.18
label=install
initrd=hd:ZZ,ramdisk.image.gz
initrd-size=8192
append=video=ofonly

image=hd:YY,/boot/vmlinux-2.2.18
label=debian
root=/dev/hdaYY
append=video=ofonly

10) reboot under OF once again, at boot prompt
boot hd:ZZ, yaboot

11) this time the installed linux boot up
- answer the question
- set up /etc/apt/sources.list
- install what you want, I strongly suggest man first ;-))
- set up the /etc/yaboot.conf
  eg:
# bootstrap partition
boot=/dev/hdaNN
device=hd:
delay=20
timeout=20

# the OF menu to use
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
# the booter to use
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot

# enable boot form cdrom
enablecdboot

# default OS, linux of course
defaultos=linux

# linux boot options.
default=debian

image=hd:YY,/boot/vmlinux-2.2.18
label=debian
root=/dev/hdaYY
append=video=ofonly

12) run mkofboot on /dev/hdaNN --filesystem hfs
that's all folks, dual boot Linux/MacOS is set
you just have to install what you want: X, compile a fitted kernel
for this machine, and so on ;-))

just a note, as I've read on list, eth drivers for the eth card of the
TiG4 are not so good.
