Bug#1072840: Acknowledgement (sddm: Sddm crashes regularly)
Hello Aurélien, the following is 100% reproducible: (1. Boot machine ) 2. Log into Console 7 (it only happens with 7) 3. Log out again → Sddm is gone For all other consoles it works (I tried 2…6 and 8…12). Can you try this as well? Bug#1072840: Acknowledgement (sddm: Sddm crashes regularly)
Hello Sddm maintainers, I analysed this annyoing bug further. The following pattern seems to hold always: 1. Start X session (various window managers, doest not seem to be relevant) 2. Start several user consoles. 3. Work for some time, switching back and forth between the virtual consoles and X 4. Log out from one (or more) user consoles. 5. Sddm crashes, sometimes directly, sometimes I can go into X (and back to the consoles) one final time. Step 3 seems to be important, because I tried to omit it, i.e. use a freshly booted system and start and close several consoles without doing something there and sddm did *not* crash. (I switched back and forth between consoles and X serveral times). Could it be ssh related? Because I use ssh a lot (both in X and on the console) and I did not use this in my tests (I can do so next time). Is there anything I should watch out for, or any other programm which might interact with sddm during step 3, which I should try to trigger to make this bug step-by-step reproducible? Thanks! Bug#1072841: sddm: Please start on VT1
Package: sddm Version: 0.21.0-1 Severity: wishlist In Stable, sddm was not blocking VT2 etc. Now it blocks VT2 (VT1 is blocked for some time by boot messages, unfortuantely). So the first usable VT is VT3. When I restart sddm after the crash (see #1072840), VT1 is used, so I can use VT 2 again for work. I could not figure out where this is configured, the files in /etc/sddm/ do not seem to govern it. Kindly use VT1 by default. -- System Information: Debian Release: trixie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages sddm depends on: ii adduser 3.137 ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.86 ii libc6 2.38-12 ii libgcc-s1 14-20240330-1 ii libpam0g1.5.3-7 ii libqt5core5t64 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libqt5dbus5t64 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libqt5gui5t64 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libqt5network5t64 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libqt5qml5 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libqt5quick55.15.13+dfsg-2 ii libstdc++6 14-20240330-1 ii libsystemd0 256~rc3-7 ii libxau6 1:1.0.9-1+b1 ii libxcb-xkb1 1.17.0-2 ii libxcb1 1.17.0-2 ii qml-module-qtquick2 5.15.13+dfsg-2 ii x11-common 1:7.7+23 ii xauth 1:1.1.2-1 ii xkb-data2.41-2 ii xserver-xorg [xserver] 1:7.7+23 Versions of packages sddm recommends: ii libpam-systemd 256~rc3-7 ii sddm-theme-breeze [sddm-theme] 4:5.27.11.1-1 ii sddm-theme-debian-breeze [sddm-theme] 4:5.27.11.1-1 Versions of packages sddm suggests: ii libpam-kwallet5 5.27.11-1 pn qtvirtualkeyboard-plugin -- debconf information: sddm/daemon_name: /usr/bin/sddm * shared/default-x-display-manager: sddm -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software "libre": http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: PGP signature

May I suggest you to check the Well, since it is not causing any visible problems, other users probably don't even notice it, least they report it. I can probably do this some time, but this looks like search in the dark. Since December 4th, when this started, this was the only programm crashing on my machine, and in 2020 I only had one additional crash in vlc. Also (several years back) I had a faulty RAM module, and the experience was quite different - under heavy load memory corruption, including disc corruption. Nothing I've seen since (and definitely not in 2020/2021). Again, if there is some debug version helpful and if I could get the core (currently I don't know how to create it in this case), I could provide it to you. Thanks for the explanation. It's just a pitty, it worked all the years (ever since I can remember, actually, basically since the 90s) until I decided to switch to Testing last year. And yes, I used different display manager chooser (kdm, xdm (long, long ago) and the last years sddm). So hopefully it can be restored soon. Bug#906037: okular: Problematic German translation of confirmation dialog
Package: okular Version: 4:17.12.2-2 Severity: normal Tags: l10n I tried the new possibility to make reviews of documents. After review, I did File->Quit and got an dialog, asking me Do you want to save your changes to "filename.pdf" or discard them? I could choose "Save", "Discard" and "Cancel", all fine and clear. Normally I used German localization. The dialog there is the following: Möchten Sie Ihre Änderungen an „filename.pdf“ speichern oder verwerfen? Here I can choose "Ja", "Nein", "Abbrechen" (In english: "Yes", "No", "Cancel"). This is a misleading translation. You cannot answer an "or" question with "yes"/"no". The correct (and straightforward) translation would be: "Speichern", "Verwerfen" and "Abbrechen". -- System Information: Debian Release: buster/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.17.10samd.01 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8), LANGUAGE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages okular depends on: ii kinit 5.47.0-1 ii kio 5.47.0-1 ii libc6 2.27-5 ii libfreetype6 2.8.1-2 ii libjpeg62-turbo 1:1.5.2-2+b1 ii libkf5activities5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5archive55.47.0-1 ii libkf5bookmarks5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5codecs5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5completion5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5configcore5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5configgui5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5configwidgets5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5coreaddons5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5i18n5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5iconthemes5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5itemviews5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5jobwidgets5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5kexiv2-15.0.0 17.08.3-1 ii libkf5kiocore55.47.0-1 ii libkf5kiowidgets5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5parts5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5pty55.47.0-1 ii libkf5service-bin 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5service55.47.0-1 ii libkf5textwidgets55.47.0-1 ii libkf5wallet-bin 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5wallet5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5widgetsaddons5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5windowsystem5 5.47.0-1 ii libkf5xmlgui5 5.47.0-1 ii libokular5core8 4:17.12.2-2 ii libphonon4qt5-4 4:4.10.1-1 ii libpoppler-qt5-1 0.63.0-2 ii libqca-qt5-2 2.1.3-2 ii libqmobipocket2 4:17.08.3-2 ii libqt5core5a 5.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libqt5dbus5 5.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libqt5gui55.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libqt5printsupport5 5.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libqt5svg55.10.1-2 ii libqt5widgets55.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libqt5xml55.10.1+dfsg-7 ii libspectre1 0.2.8-1 ii libstdc++68.2.0-3 ii phonon4qt54:4.10.1-1 ii zlib1g1:1.2.11.dfsg-1 Versions of packages okular recommends: ii cups-bsd 2.2.8-5 Versions of packages okular suggests: ii ghostscript9.22~dfsg-2.1 pn jovie pn okular-extra-backends ii poppler-data 0.4.9-2 ii texlive-binaries 2018.20180710.48169-1 pn unrar -- no debconf information -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software "libre": http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#840781: sddm: Missing option to choose window maker
Package: sddm Version: 0.13.0-1 Severity: important Until the last update sddm (which I assume is the successor to kdm which I used on stable) was enabling users to choose the window manager of choice. Unfortunately, this was not automatic. This is no longer the case, i.e. all users are "stuck" with the window manager last used before the update. Bug#761487: This issue makes printouts with okular impossible
Package: okular Version: 4:4.14.2-2 Hello, since we (at work) use an (older) version of okular as default pdf viewer I use it a lot at home (this machine) as well. Unfortunately, this printout issue makes it unsuitable for printing out. I experience for some time that files printed out with okular are missing pices at the borders. I now tried to print out the official German tax forms for 2014 and again, they are missing parts at the edges. Printing the *same* form with the *same* CUPS printer driver using evince instead results in a complete page. Comparing the print outs, the topmost visible part of the okular print out seems shifted up by about 1 cm (though it is missing something at the top) and shifted left by a few mm. At the same time, the okular print out is expanded, i.e. on the right hand side some parts are missing, the right most part visible is about 5 mm to the right compared to the evince print out. At the bottom again some parts are missing, the bottom most part visible on the okular print out is about 8 mm lower than on the evince print. Please note that there is still paper left on all edges of the okular printout, so it appears as if the printout was expanded and cropped *before* handed out to the CUPS printing system. Please tell me if/which additional information you need to track this down. (And it would be great if it could be fixed possibly for Jessi or a later point release). Maybe there is a "test" page which contains clear marks (like many printers have built in). I could try it both in okular and (as a comparision) in evince. I'm using the driver "FS-1020D" for the Kyocera printer of the same name. -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: sysvinit (via /sbin/init) Versions of packages okular depends on: ii kde-runtime 4:4.14.2-2 ii libc6 2.19-13 ii libfreetype62.5.2-2 ii libjpeg62-turbo 1:1.3.1-11 ii libkactivities6 4:4.13.3-1 ii libkdecore5 4:4.14.2-4 ii libkdeui5 4:4.14.2-4 ii libkexiv2-114:4.14.2-1 ii libkio5 4:4.14.2-4 ii libkparts4 4:4.14.2-4 ii libkprintutils4 4:4.14.2-4 ii libkpty44:4.14.2-4 ii libokularcore5 4:4.14.2-2 ii libphonon4 4:4.8.0-4 ii libpoppler-qt4-40.26.5-2 ii libqca2 2.0.3-6 ii libqimageblitz4 1:0.0.6-4 ii libqmobipocket1 4:4.14.2-1 ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libqt4-declarative 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libqt4-svg 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libqt4-xml 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libqtcore4 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libqtgui4 4:4.8.6+git64-g5dc8b2b+dfsg-2+b1 ii libsolid4 4:4.14.2-4 ii libspectre1 0.2.7-3 ii libstdc++6 4.9.1-19 ii phonon 4:4.8.0-4 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.8.dfsg-2+b1 okular recommends no packages. Bug#540369: konqueror: Please detect Chiasmus files in browser mode
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6 Severity: wishlist Chiasmus is a encryption standard developed by the German Federal Office for Information Security ("Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik"). The encrypted files usually have an extension of .xia and start with the three letters "XIA1". I attached a sample file for your reference. Currently the bubble pop up says "Unkown". The chiasmus keys are usually stored in a file with an extension of .xis and have the following header: XIS *** Aendern Sie diese Datei nicht direkt!! *** (i.e. two lines with those characters, the key itself starts in the next line) and are currently recogonized as "diff files". I confirmed these information with the developer of Chiasmus. For more information either see http://www.bsi.de/produkte/chiasmus/indexeng.htm with the english version or http://www.bsi.de/produkte/chiasmus/index.htm which also shows the Linux version but is only in German. What I did: I closed all konqueror windows, and started a new one -- same problem, klauncher warning, not working. Then I closed this window, *killed dcop* and started a new konqueror. Now it is working like a charm. This of course, defeat the session management, since closing all windows I want to avoid. Next time, I simply try to kill dcop without closing the windows -- maybe this helps, too. Greetings Helge -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Sometimes it complains (but not together with this bug) that it has some trouble setting up network connectivity (I wrote it down at home and can check it if you want), but konqueror just works fine nevertheless. Also the I/O-Slaves should not work withouth dcop, shouldn't they? But I fire up kdcop tonight and inform you of the results. Greetings Helge -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#231392: konqueror: Can't talk to klauncher
Hello Peter, On Fri, Feb 06, 2004 at 04:25:10PM +, Peter Nuttall wrote: > Thanks for reporting the bug. can you tell be if the same problem happens > within kde itself? Mmh, that'll be difficult. Since it only happens sometimes, this would mean I would have to use KDE for a longer time which I really would like to avoid[1]. If you have anything which requires testing once, I could install KDE, try it out, and remove it again. About the load issue I am rather unsure. Friday I waited a while after booting, but just when starting X updatedb kicked in causing a higher load but konqueror worked fine. Greetings Helge [1] I don't like desktop environments, let them be called gnome or KDE; I only want to use certain applications. That's just very personal preference and has nothing to do with code quality. -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#231392: konqueror: Can't talk to klauncher
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.1.3-1 Severity: normal I run wmaker and use the session support by wmaker to restore the windows when X is started with startx. Konqueror-windows are opened fine, but sometimes I get for every window the error message (a button): Could not start process Can't talk to klauncher If you want I can provide a screenshot of this. I tried manually starting klauncher with klauncher & but this does not help (nor do I see a process klauncher running afterwards). The same error appears when pressing the "Home" button, and local file directory browsing is impossible; the file open dialog is also unusuable. This also happend with konqueror under woody, but was not reported. I am not sure how to properly debug this to report the error more precicesly. Please tell me what to look for/at when this happenes next time, to provide you with the necessary details. My *impression* (!!) is, that it is related to system load. If only one konqueror window is to be openend, the error is a lot less likly to occur; also usually the system has some load when X is started directly after boot (e.g. checksecurity), so it takes a while for the konqueror windows to appear (much later than e.g. the xterms). But I might be wrong on that guess. It would be great if at least a possibility existed, to (re)start klauncher manually instead of having unusuable konqueror windows. Even better would be, if all windows could be opend at once (with the proper location on the screen and maybe even the proper directories). But I know KDE has decided against this route. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: alpha Kernel: Linux sixtyfor 2.4.21-pre1 #1 Don Okt 2 18:27:25 CEST 2003 alpha Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii kate4:3.1.3-1KDE Advanced Text Editor ii kcontrol4:3.1.3-1KDE Control Center ii kdelibs44:3.1.4-3KDE core libraries ii kfind 4:3.1.3-1KDE File Find Utility ii libart-2.0-22.3.8-1 The Gnome 2 canvas widget - runtim ii libc6.1 2.3.2.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.6.10-6 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.3.2-4GCC support library ii libjpeg62 6b-9 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkonq44:3.1.3-1Core libraries for KDE's file mana ii libpcre34.3-3Philip Hazel's Perl 5 Compatible R ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt 3:3.2.1-6Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.2-4The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxrender1 0.8.3-5 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.2.1-3compression library - runtime -- debconf information: * konqueror/crypto: -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#230213: kdelibs-bin: Silently recreates .kde even if no app is running
Package: kdelibs-bin Version: 4:3.1.4-3 Severity: minor I experimented a little with konqueror, and moved my (old) .kde away to test. After the testing I renamed the (newly created) .kde directory and wanted to move my old .kde back as .kde. At this time, konqueror (the only KDE app I regularly use) did not run (I explicitly quit it and waited for a moment). Nevertheless, the .kde-directory was always silently recreated. Finally I killed dcop and then I was able to rename my old .kde directory back. It is very annoying if, after an application has been quit, its config directory is still silently managed (recreated). It looks to me like the windows "If the user is so stupid to delete this important file, I put it back myself" "feature". This is ok, if the application in question (here: konqueror) is restarted, but if I quit it I want to be able to do system maintenance without fighting with a program about it! And now, I was using plain window maker, so no other KDE application where started (at least to my knowledge, I started only konqueror from the menu entry). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: alpha Kernel: Linux sixtyfor 2.4.21-pre1 #1 Don Okt 2 18:27:25 CEST 2003 alpha Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages kdelibs-bin depends on: ii kdelibs4 4:3.1.4-3 KDE core libraries ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.8-1The Gnome 2 canvas widget - runtim ii libarts1 1.1.4-3aRts Sound system ii libasound20.9.8-2Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ii libaudio2 1.6b-1 The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#230205: kdebase-kio-plugins: Please extend package description
Package: kdebase-kio-plugins Version: 4:3.1.3-1 Severity: minor Tags: patch I upgraded from KDE 2.x konqueror to KDE 3.x konqueror by running apt-get install konqueror Unfortunately I could not view thumbnails, and since I am on dialup I cannot randomly try out various packages but rather look at package descriptions to see if a certain package fills my need. kdebase-kio-plugins currently says: Description: KDE I/O Slaves KDE I/O Slaves . This package is part of the official KDE base module. This is not very descriptive and did not lead me to the solution that I need this packet. Especially it repeats the Short description in the long description. I would suggest somthing like Description: KDE I/O Slaves This packet contains various internal helper tools for many KDE programms, like e.g. konqueror. If you need to access e.g. zip-files transparently or view previews, you have to install this paket. . This package is part of the official KDE base module. . KDE is an advanced desktop environment. Possibly even the Short description should be reformulated to give a novice an idea. I mark this as a bug, because policy 3.4 says: The description should describe the package (the program) to a user (system administrator) who has never met it before so that they have enough information to decide whether they want to install it. This description should not just be copied verbatim from the program's documentation. And as a user/system administrator I might know what KDE is (though it won't hurt to explain that as well, suppose I just learned Gnome coming from e.g. another common OS and now start to explore my system), but not even having a full sentence specific to the package, and "KDE I/O Slaves" which contains two acronyms and one technical term is not "descriptive" to someone who has never met it before (and I have used KDE 2.x, so I even heard about I/O Slaves, just I did not know that I needed them in konquerer as I could see the images just fine when clicking on them). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: alpha Kernel: Linux sixtyfor 2.4.21-pre1 #1 Don Okt 2 18:27:25 CEST 2003 alpha Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages kdebase-kio-plugins depends on: ii kdelibs44:3.1.4-3KDE core libraries ii libart-2.0-22.3.8-1 The Gnome 2 canvas widget - runtim ii libc6.1 2.3.2.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.6.10-6 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.3.2-4GCC support library ii libjpeg62 6b-5 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libldap22.1.23-1 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpcre34.3-3Philip Hazel's Perl 5 Compatible R ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt 3:3.2.1-6Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libsmbclient3.0.1-2 shared library that allows applica ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.2-4The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxrender1 0.8.3-5 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.2.1-3compression library - runtime -- no debconf information -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#230206: konqueror: Please suggest "kdebase-kio-plugins"
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.1.3-1 Severity: wishlist I just upgraded konqueror from woody (KDE 3.x finally in testing!) and severly missed the thumbnails. I asked our local KDE guru, and he was stumbled as well. Finally after poking around, he suggest that I should try to install "kdebase-kio-plugins" and see what happens (he believed that to be necessary only for advanced kio-slaves). Can you add "kdebase-kio-plugins" to the suggests/recommands clause? Probably replacing "konq-plugins" because that trys to install KDE 2.x-debs (which it can't anymore). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: alpha Kernel: Linux sixtyfor 2.4.21-pre1 #1 Don Okt 2 18:27:25 CEST 2003 alpha Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii kate4:3.1.3-1KDE Advanced Text Editor ii kcontrol4:3.1.3-1KDE Control Center ii kdelibs44:3.1.4-3KDE core libraries ii kfind 4:3.1.3-1KDE File Find Utility ii libart-2.0-22.3.8-1 The Gnome 2 canvas widget - runtim ii libc6.1 2.3.2.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.6.10-6 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.3.2-4GCC support library ii libjpeg62 6b-5 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkonq44:3.1.3-1Core libraries for KDE's file mana ii libpcre34.3-3Philip Hazel's Perl 5 Compatible R ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt 3:3.2.1-6Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.2-4The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxrender1 0.8.3-5 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.2.1-3compression library - runtime -- debconf information: * konqueror/crypto: -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys.
