Just to be sure I made no mistake here, I tested in dolphin with a ogg, ogv, webm and mp3 file, and sure enough, dragonplayer do not show in the GUI as an alternative for playing these files. The lacking mime types in the dragonplayer desktop file is a usability problem for anyone trying to use dragonplayer as their primary video player on the Linux desktop. At the very least, please add audio/ogg, video/ogg, video/webm and audio/mpeg (the ones outputed by 'file --mime-type' for the files) to the desktop file, to ensure these Linux wise commonly used audio and video formats are recognized. -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen

V Migration of 'Default Address Book' succeeded. [Close] The same happen with Debian Edu based on Wheezy/stable. As there is no address book KDE setup in the user home directory when the user log in for the first time, I expect there to be nothing to migrate, and thus expect there to be no popup about some strange migration. I tried to run 'ps -ef|grep mig' when the popup was shown, and after I had closed it, and discovered that the process 'kres-migration --interactive-on-change --type contact --omit-client-bridge' was running when the popup was showing and no longer running when the popup was gone. I thus suspect it was responsible for the popup and assign this bug to the kdepim-runtime package. I might be mistaken. Please reassign if some other package is the cause. The user home directory created on a roaming workstation is fairly standard, with these files present: .local/share/user-places.xbel .profile .bash_logout .bashrc .gtk-bookmarks The user-places.xbel and .gtk-bookmarks files are created when the user is created with a CIFS mount pointer to the central home directory. He suggested I ran 'kscreen-console bug' and said that the problem most likely is caused by powerdevil, a kded module in the kde-workspace-bin package. While trying to figure out what was causing the black scree, I also got some ideas for debugging on #debian-kde, suggesting to use kdebugdialog to enable debugging in ksmserver, ksplash and something like that to get log messages to show up in .xsession-errors. Luckily this did not prove neccessary, as powerdevil was the cause, and editing /usr/share/kde4/services/kded/powerdevil.desktop, changing X-KDE-Kded-autoload from true to false worked around the problem. Reassigning this bug to the binary package most likely responsible. See URL: http://bugs.debian.org/710938 for the details. When applying the workaround (i915.invert_brightness=1), I get the gdm and kdm login display, and can log in. And when I log into Gnome, I can use the desktop. But when I log into KDE, the splash screen show up, the first icon show up, and then suddenly the screen is turned off. The login continue, and the screen to not turn on again until quite a while later. I suspect what happen is that the screen saver kick in and try to turn off the screen while in reality it turn it on again. When I move the mouse, the screen turn off again. I have no idea what package could cause this, so I file it against kde-full, hoping you can help me debug this and pinpoint the problem to the correct package. The previous upload was meant to fix #691160 by doing some renaming. I guess _that_ might have introduced a dependency loop, but I fail to see how that could go through phonon-backend-vlc. What is a way to determine the actual loop? I have no idea how to determine the actual loop, but according to URL: http://bugs.debian.org/655382 it is in libqt4-dbus. The problem is that a client machine is automatically turned off at 16:00, even if a user is logged in, because 'who' do not report any logged in user when using kdm. I normally load the examples one by one, and very quickly the process is eating up my machines memory and the computer grind to a halt while paging and filling up swap. I've tested both in Squeeze and Wheezy, and the processes quickly get several hundred megabytes in resident size according to top. Can the step program be changed to use less memory? When using konqueror to browse through my collection of DVD ISOs, I tried to click on one of them and expected dragonplayer to start or at least for KDE to propose either to use dragonplayer or k3b. Instead only k3b was started. The reason for this is that /usr/share/applications/kde4/k3b.desktop list application/x-cd-image as a supported MIME type, while /usr/share/applications/kde4/dragonplayer.desktop do not. Please add the MIME type. It is claimed to be caused by permissions problems. The disk is not full and the directory exist and the user have access to write to the directory after login. According to URL: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112580 the problem is in kdelibs and a workaround is to create ~/.local/share before the user log into KDE. According to URL: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=109t=69921 the underlying problem is fixed in kdelibs version 4:4.6.1 in Linux Mint. I find the same problem reported to Ubuntu as URL: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/627815 , and claimed to be fixed in kde4libs version 4:4.5.1-0ubuntu7 and again fixed in kde4libs version 4:4.6.1-0ubuntu1. I also find the same problem reported in URL: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750423 . As this problem affect Debian Edu badly, it would be great if it could be fixed in Debian/Squeeze. [Petter Reinholdtsen] We investigated this issue a bit on IRC, and two workarounds were discovered. Either init.d/kdm can set KDEROOTDIR to some more sensible location (like /var/lib/kdm/). This will make kdm stop creating files in the root users home directory, and is a more proper fix. Given that squeeze is frozen, I suggest this is done to kdm quickly to get a fix into Squeeze before it release. An alternative to avoid the config migration dialog when root log in for the first time, is to change kaboom to look for ~/.kde/share/ instead of just ~/.kde/. The files would still be created by kdm in ~root/.kde/, but the dialog would no longer show up. This should probably be done too. For Debian Edu, we have implemented a workaround and touch /root/.local/kaboom during installation to make sure kaboom do not show up when the root user log in for the first time. I suspect this bug should be release critical, but am not sure so I have not raised the severity. Asked on #debian-release for their view, but did not get a definite answer. Would be nice to have some comment on this issue before Squeeze is released. If this is the stance of the KDE maintainence team, as in willing to release Squeeze with kdm producing files in /root/.kde/ when started after boot and the root user to get a misleading and confusing migrate configuration dialog when logging in for the first time on a freshly installed machine, I'll spend my time elsewhere. Unless told otherwise, I will take it that your view is shared by the rest of the KDE team, and thus leave this resolution of issue for a future upgrade of KDE. Also, should krb5-kdc need a working DNS server, it should include $named in its should-start header, to make sure it start after the DNS server is operational also when the DNS server is on the local machine. Sune provided me with a kdemultimedia test package with such patch included, and I tested running it via a thin client, and it caused kmix to segfault. The thin client have ESD, ALSA via pulseaudio and pulseaudio enabled. I've forgotten the URL to Sunes test packages, but have asked him to submit the URL to BTS. When running the same kmix version locally on the server, where ESD is not enabled and the alsa devices are local, kmix only showed a dummy output control instead of the local audio device. I lack contact with the test setup right now, so I can't test any more. Colin asked for this input: 1. Get a backtrace for the crash - preferably with an updated patch from the above if it fits. 2. On the dummy machine, try and get some info as to what is hogging the device nodes or if check if there is a permissions problem on the sound devices themselves. [Petter Reinholdtsen] So either we had a bug in debian-edu-artwork which failed to trigger a problem with kdm in lenny, or the sematic of the THEME setting in kdm changed between lenny and squeeze. Only the kdm maintainer can tell what the intended behavour for the THEME setting in /etc/default/kdm.d/ was. I found a more accessable source for this information, in URL:help:/kdm/kdm-files.html#kdmrc-greeter: Theme The theme to use for the greeter. Can point to either a directory or an XML file. Empty by default. As this was the definition for Lenny, it should be the same for Squeeze, or init.d/kdm should be rewritten to handle the THEME variable used in /etc/default/kdm.d the same way as in Lenny. A simple test to see if the path is a directory or a file and rewrite it to a xml file if it was a directory should work. I suspect thought that the problem can be caused by something in our XML file, and would welcome help with reviewing it from someone with knowledge about the format. Check out the debian-edu-artwork package in unstable and testing for the theme in question. I came across another clue in URL: http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-workspace/kdm/kdm-themes.html , which state that the theme directory need to include a file KdmGreeterTheme.desktop. Our kdm theme include a GdmGreeterTheme.desktop file instead. Rename it to KdmGreeterTheme.desktop and changing 'GdmGreeterTheme' to 'KdmGreeterTheme' in the file made kdm stop rejecting the theme. The buttons are still broken, but I guess that can be fixed by changing the xml file. Next, I tried to do the same with the kdm theme using the Lenny kdm, and the theme still work. I guess kdm became more picky about themese between KDE 3 and 4. Perhaps we can use the same theme for gdm and kdm if we provide both KdmGreeterTheme.desktop and GdmGreeterTheme.desktop and a XML file that both gdm and kdm understand? I tested this with LTSP using kmix version 4:4.34-1, and it do not work on the thin client there either. The kmix window show no mixer at all, even thought sound work with KDE (the login sound is played). What's more, I don't see how this bug qualifies as important. KDE 3.5 has never been designed to work with PA at all. Feel free to submit patches though. Raising severity to important to reflect this new information and the fact that it affect KDE 4 in Squeeze, and affect a lot of users without making it unusable for everybody. This bug affect Debian Edu, making it harder to document how users should change the sound volume, as the same method (use kmix) do not work everywhere. It also require a fix in usplash (#492407) to work properly, but with those two fixes in place, usplash stop as it should before kdm is started, and the boot work as it should in Debian Edu. It occured to me that it might be better to just move the responsibility of shutting down the splash screen from individual init.d scripts to /etc/init.d/rc, as it already have an idea of when the splash screen should stop. Because of this, I have implemented a change in sysv-rc to call the splash_stop() function and will upload a fix to close this issue. I will give it some more testing before uploading. If that happens, I will reassign the bug to usplash I believe it will have to be fixed in both gdm and kdm, and that no clean solution exist to solve it in usplash. The existing solutions from Ubuntu solve the problem in kdm and gdm. Why do you want to reassign it to usplash? How do you propose it is solved there? Is there something wrong with the proposed solution and the API provided by initscripts? Just to make sure it is clear. We in the Debian Edu need a solution to this in Lenny. A package ping-pong seem likely to take a long time, and thus will not make a solution show up in Lenny. The only alternative seem to be for us to fork kdm and maintain our own version in our own repository. We really would like to avoid this. The difference is around the enter key, and is more a question on how many keys the keyboard have than a question of language. Looking at the three keyboards I have available, all of them matches the nb.keyboard layout, and none -f them matches the nn.keyboard layout. All have ['] between [æ] and [enter]. In short, I recommend renaming nb.keyboard to no.keyboard, and remove the nn.keyboard. I've discovered that I also need to update /etc/kde3/kdm/backgroundrc to make sure the background image do not flicker back and forth when I use the same background image in KDE an the KDM theme. For the KDM theme, The UseTheme flag need to be changed to 'true' before any divertion or alternative could do the job, so I am still searching for a policy compliant way to do that. Bug#275951: Please split kdmrc into multiple files for ease of maintenance
Teaching kdm to read configuration from more than one file would have several advantages. Multilevel configuration, where kdm for example reads /usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc first, then overrides in /usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc.d/ and finally /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc, would solve these problems: - It would reduce upgrade problems, as the sysadmin would edit the file in /etc/, and the package maintainer would edit the file in /usr/share/, and thus no upgrade conflict would happen. If a config option change name, the old value would be ignored, but that is best fixed by not changing name of config options. :) - It would make it easier to customize kdm automatically for custom debian distros (see bug #385849), as the CDD could provide an kdmrc override file with the values it want to override in /usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc.d/, and it would be replace the package defaults while allowing the sysadmin to override the values she wants using the kcontrol options. Solving this would make it a lot easier for Debian Edu. Please try to get this fixed before Etch releases. I just had a look in tasksel, and the kde-desktop task seem a bit slim to be a full blown alternative to the gnome-desktop task. Are anyone in the Debian KDE team looking after the kde-desktop task? I'll try to explain the problem. I start a konsole, and use it as normal. Next, I for example start xine (or some other program, using xine as an example), and places the window over the konsole window. I place the mouse over both the xine window and the konsole window, and then press 'q' to exit xine. At this point, the focus is back in the konsole window, but it isn't accepting keypresses. I have to move the mouse out of the konsole window, and back in again, before konsole will accept keypresses. This do not happen for every film I play using xine. And it does not happen for all programs. I've been able to reproduce it using the film available from URL:http://www.nuug.no/pub/video/published/20040819-minipc-medium.mpeg. Start a konsole, run 'xine http://www.nuug.no/pub/video/published/20040819-minipc-medium.mpeg' and place the video window over the konsole. Next, press 'q' to exit xine and try to use [enter] in the konsole. [Sven Luther] I think the real solution to this recuring problem is to split the dekstop patch into a just X, gnome and KDE task. This is much more friendlier to our non-broadband users, and it makes the task stuff actually usable. As it stands, we could as well not show it. Personally, I use both KDE, Gnome and just X programs. Why do you believe a desktop user want to limit herself to only one of these classes of programs?

Searching on google for TAG_BRIGHTNESS, I come across a document URL:http://www.cymes.de/members/joker/projects/pbbuttons/clog-gtkpbbuttons.txt mentioning that a constant changed name from TAG_BRIGHTNESS to TAG_LCDBRIGHTNESS. Perhaps the source need to be updated to use the new name? I do not have a powerpc machine available to test this.

The constant is supposed to be in pbbtags.h from package pbbuttonsd-dev. It was recently upgraded to a newer version (0.5.9-1), and this new version do not a constant have TAG_BRIGHTNESS.
