Bug#1035310: bullseye-pu: package xz-utils/5.2.11-0~deb11u1
Hello Jonathan, sorry for my late answer, I was on holidays. As always, when such a transfer occurs, I can provide an upload without the affected man pages and with the proper package releations. Now sínce bookworm is released I do not intend to provide any further upload to oldstable and I do not see any reason to processes this issue any further, affected users can upgrade to stable now to get the latest localized man pages from xz-utils proper. If there are technical issues for performing this upload to oldstable and hence actions form my side (to enable smooth upgrading) are needed please let me know. You previously considered doing a backport and I asked you several if this is still the case; since you did not respond, I did not remove the conflicting pages in my bullseye packport. As bookworm is about to release, I just wonder if that is really necessary to introduce the translation files in your backport. I'm all about translations, but this is a bit fragile with two backports with all the upgrade paths. So hopefully we get this right. If you still feel this is necessary for your users, then please contact me and I can perform another upload with the file removed and appropriate package relationships. (This implies you tell me the version which introduces the files.) Please tell me as well which translated man pages you ship, as there are also Danish and Ukrainian ones in my backports. Please not that I will not perform uploads to bullseye once bookworm has been released. Bug#1034411: unblock: manpages-l10n/4.18.1-1
Package: release.debian.org Severity: normal User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: unblock X-Debbugs-Cc: manpages-l...@packages.debian.org Control: affects -1 + src:manpages-l10n Please unblock package manpages-l10n [ Reason ] manpages-l10n is a (set of) pure documentation packages. It works by downloading the current version of the man pages from the target distribution (here Debian) related to ~ 100 upstream packages. Then the translators update the translations of theses man pages. To be current, this process needs to be performed as late as possible, so that man pages within Debian change as little as possible in this time frame, i.e. the latest version scheduled for Bookworm are used. Due to large scale changes in some upstreams (especially manpages) not all translators were able to perform as much translations as possible in the last version (e.g. Spanish). Also a rather nasty confusion was resolved in German and two translation bugs from the BTS are fixed (#1032881,#1033438). Also other translators (e.g. UK or FR) worked on further translations and updates. Therefor upstream suggested to prepare a minor (last) release targetting bookworm (i.e. 1.18.1). [ Impact ] If the unblock is *not* granted then non-english speakers will see some outdated translations and some missing translations. Especially for less maintained languages the difference is bigger as upstream works hard to keep the translations shipped by performing trivial unfuzzy and translations. But also active teams like french and german are constantily improving the translations. Also German users will have a nasty confusion around the terms NULL/NUL/Zero. [ Tests ] First of all the entire man pages are build daily in a private build setting (automatically), uncovering syntax errors. Closer to the release, additional manually initiated builds are added. All builds are reviewed for (potential) errors. Secondly, the Debian build system (full builds done locally!) also uncovers potential problems, like missing files or directories. Thirdly, linitian checks the entire set of man pages for errors. These linitian errors are mostly harmless, but regularly reviewed as well (and fixed, if possible with reasonable effort). Finally, some random man pages are manually reviewed. However, for languages I don't speak (most of them) this is of limited value. Additionally, I read the upstream git log and sometimes run a git diff if I suspect suspicious changes and interact with most of the translators on them. I'd love to add non superficial auto packaging tests, I'm just a little bit lost which make sense. [ Risks ] The risk is low. This is pure documentation. The new packages are a little bit larger than the old ones on average, but no programm/code works differently because of them. It is also a leaf package and the user can decide to read the english original at any time, e.g. by running LC_ALL=C man command As the set of actual Debian (upstream) packages we translate was not changed sind the last version, changes for new undetected file conflicts are very low. In the higly unlikey case something would be discovered, I can quickly exclude those files and prepare another upload. However, this is not expected at all. Note that upstream started including (but not shipping!) korean translations. They are only in the source and hence pose no problem. Except for this, the entire infrastructure is unchanged since 4.18.0-1. [ Checklist ] [x] all changes are documented in the d/changelog [x] I reviewed all changes and I approve them See above, the content (translation) I cannot actually review, as I don't speak Danish, Hungarian, French, Swedish, … [x] attach debdiff against the package in testing The debdiff is *huge*, for example because the reference for some other distribution was changed (irrelevant for Debian) and even small changes cause rewarpping of (long) paragraphs. You can pick up the full debdiff here: https://helgefjell.de/data/manpages-l10n-18.0-18.1.debdiff Or a reduced (still large) version here: https://helgefjell.de/data/manpages-l10n-18.0-18.1.r1.debdiff Or a very reduced version here: https://helgefjell.de/data/manpages-l10n-18.0-18.1.r2.debdiff The smallest one excludes the actual translation part (po files) but gives you an idea about the changes which happend. [ Other info ] Do not hesitate to contact me for any question regarding the update, e.g. if the above description is too brief. In case the release is less then ~15 days ahead, I would appreciate a little aging as well. unblock manpages-l10n/4.18.1-1 -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software "libre": http://www.ffii.de/ sig

[ Impact ] German and Portuguese users will have a partial english man page. [ Tests ] Fakeroot uses autopkgtest. However, the man page generation is not under test. I looked at the German man pages. Also lintian performs some checks on man pages. [ Risks ] I don't know any. The exact same code is already in Testing/bookworm. Bug#989854: unblock: manpages-l10n/4.10.0-1
Package: release.debian.org Severity: normal User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: unblock X-Debbugs-Cc: "Dr. Tobias Quathamer" Please unblock package manpages-l10n [ Reason ] manpages-l10n contains (translated) man pages for > 100 source packages. Upstream prepared a new version which contained many updated and improved man page translations. In case a string is not translated, the current english text is shown (due to po4a). This package does not contain any binary/programme. [ Impact ] Some translations had errors (which have been fixed) and many strings and man pages are now translated, giving non native users a better experience when reading (localized) man pages. For example, many more openssh pages are now available in German. [ Tests ] Upstream (I'm part of upstream) runs nightly builds of all man pages in all languages, checking for (build) errors. Furthermore upstream regularly reviews (where possible) incoming translations. Also more users started reporting typos in the recent months (at least for German). [ Risks ] This is a leaf and documentation package, servicing our users speaking languages different from English. We are currently working on the proper fix. At the moment it looks like the fix will require another upload to debian backports. Bug#985139: unblock: manpages-l10n/4.9.3-1
Package: release.debian.org Severity: normal User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: unblock X-Debbugs-Cc: "Dr. Tobias Quathamer" , Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña Please unblock package manpages-l10n (Please provide enough (but not too much) information to help the release team to judge the request efficiently. E.g. by filling in the sections below.) [ Reason ] manpages-l10n contains (translated) man pages for > 100 source packages. Shortly before the hard freeze, upstream synced the version of the (english) man pages in Debian and prepared a new release. Due to po4a this either contains the updated translation (if available) or the current english texts. Therefore, the translated man pages in 4.9.3-1 are now in sync what is shipped with Bullseye. Furthermore, I finally managed to contact Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña, and we agreed that the very outdated spanish man page translations are taken over by manpages-l10n, manpages-es-extra is asked for removal. [ Impact ] Some translated man pages are out of date (in 4.9.1-7), giving users reading them outdated (or possibly wrong) information. Spanish users will miss some translations, since manpages-es-extra is not available any more and the corresponding translations in manpages-l10n would not be shipped (they were deliberately not present in 4.9.1-7, where I had not been able to contact Javier). [ Tests ] Upstream (I'm part of upstream) runs nightly builds of all man pages in all languages, checking for (build) errors. Furthermore upstream regularly reviews (where possible) incoming translations. [ Risks ] This is a leaf and documentation package, servicing our users speaking languages different from English. [ Checklist ] [x] all changes are documented in the d/changelog [x] I reviewed all changes and I approve them [ ] attach debdiff against the package in testing I can prepare the debdiff, but it will contain lots of changes, since many man pages had updated (even if only due to po4a reformatting them). [ Other info ] If there is any open question regarding this unblock, I'm most happy to provide it. In the changelog unfortunately there is a typo, the new upstream versio is indeed 4.9.3, *not* 4.9.1. unblock manpages-l10n/4.9.3-1 -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software "libre": http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Bug#982480: unblock: manpages-l10n/4.9.2-1
Package: release.debian.org Severity: normal User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: unblock X-Debbugs-Cc: Mario Blättermann , Craig Small Please unblock package manpages-l10n This version will be upload soon and I need your advise. Please note that 4.9.2-1 has (as of this writing) not yet hit the archive and will go through NEW unfortunately. I give a brief background for the unfortunate situation for this package in [ Other info ] below. [ Reason ] manpages-l10n contains translations of manpages contained in Debian into many languages. This is achieved by downloading the manpages from Debian Unstable, converting them into po files, translating them and if the translation is 80% or more complete, including it in the next release. To have current translations for bullsey, upstream agreed to provide a release close to the Freeze date. This release has happend last weekend. "Unfortunately" afterwards psmics and procps decided to ship translated man pages themeselves (which in itself is good), which required them to be excluded by manpages-l10n. To cater for this, upstream has made another release today (4.9.2) which I will package in a moment and and ask my current sponsor (Craig) for upload. Since we ship new languages (i.e. packages), manpages-l10n will need to get through NEW and will not be able to reach the freeze date by 2021-02-12. The rationale for this is in [ Other info ]. Now to the question: Due to the late changes, the upstream version now contains man pages shipped in manpages-es-extra. Some time ago, we requested this package to be removed (#980885), as we believe, shipping this package is a disservice to Debian users. However, the maintainer has not responded. 4.9.2-1 will not ship the files, so no conflict is present, but ideally manpages-es-extra would be removed and the much (!) more current files would be shipped by manpages-es (from manpages-l10n). If you feel this is possible, I would prepare another upload for this. [ Impact ] a) Some users will get old translations, i.e. from October, b) some (for ES, IT and MK) will get no current translated man pages at all. [ Tests ] There is no code, but I rebuild the entire set of man pages daily (also during the build) and look for possible build errors. [ Risks ] This is a leave and pure documentation package. Users can always switch to the english man page if for whatever reason there should be a problem with the translation. [ Checklist ] [x] all changes are documented in the d/changelog [x] I reviewed all changes and I approve them [ ] attach debdiff against the package in testing If an debdiff is really required, please tell me the version you would like to have it against. [ Other info ] Toddy, the original (and main) maintainer is caught in real life, so he transferred me (a Debian maintainer) the appropriate rights to upload manpages-l10n. Howerver, as DM I'm not allowed to get packages through NEW (needed to support ES, IT and MK) and hence I spend the last weeks looking for a DD who could sponser this upload. Fortunately, Craig was so kind to fill in this role. Once NEW is passed I'm available and capable of performing subsequent uploads (if necessary), i.e. for fixing further bugs. (I'm a DM for ~ 10 years) If you need any further information regarding the unblock request, I'm available and usually respond within 24 hours latest. unblock manpages-l10n/4.9.2-1 -- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel taint flags: TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to de_DE.UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software "libre": http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: PGP signature

The clue is that they're under release.debian.org. :-) Thanks. I was wondering for some time as well which package to report at. I maintain goobox. It had a release critical bug which I just downgraded because I cannot reproduce it and the submitter does not answer anymore on my questions. Now the version in sid should be able to migrate to testing. However, it is still blocked. The list of RC bugs that the BTS provides to britney for testing migration is updated four times a day - at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC. You downgraded the bug at 20:00, so when britney ran at 22:00 UTC she was unaware of the downgrading. The next britney run is in a few minutes time at which point the bug will no longer be a blocker. Thanks for your explanation. I assumed that it already happened and looking at that page made me believe it was another issue. Secondly, libcam-dev is in testing: http://packages.debian.org/jessie/libcam-dev Yes, but. The link in question is in a section headed Dependency analysis (including build-depends; i386 only):. libcam-dev _does not exist_ on i386: libcam-dev | 9.1+ds1-3 |testing | kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386 Dooh, of course. If it builds on your machine use docbook-to-man, on the buildds use pregenerated stuff? Sorry, but no. As you said it's probably not goobox's fault so it needs to be fixed somewhere else. It turned out to be a dpkg issue (cf. #675613). Some buildds had a older dpkg (older than current wheezy, where this is fixed) and thus the build failed. I removed the above hack (i.e. the relevant rules file now reads again: docbook-to-man $(MANDIR)/goobox.en.sgml debian/goobox/usr/share/man/man1/goobox.1 po4a -v -f debian/po4a.cfg # po4a-translate is broken, c.f. #280882 perl -i -p -e 's# refentrytitle\dhucpackage;#\dhucpackage;#ms' $(MANDIR)/goobox.de.sgml perl -i -p -e 's#^\s*/refentrytitle##' $(MANDIR)/goobox.de.sgml docbook-to-man $(MANDIR)/goobox.de.sgml debian/goobox/usr/share/man/de/man1/goobox.1 recode latin1..utf8 debian/goobox/usr/share/man/de/man1/goobox.1 on all architectures. I uploaded this as goobox 3.0.1-5. After all buildds updated to a recent enough dpkg (i.e. the one from wheezy or sid) goobox built again without problems on all architectures. I attached the debdiff to the current version in Testing (i.e. debdiff goobox_3.0.1-1.dsc goobox_3.0.1-5.dsc) where I removed the language updates themselves. unblock goobox/3.0.1-5 Thanks Helge -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software libre: http://www.ffii.de/ diff -Nru goobox-3.0.1/debian/changelog goobox-3.0.1/debian/changelog --- goobox-3.0.1/debian/changelog 2012-04-20 20:37:30.0 +0200 +++ goobox-3.0.1/debian/changelog 2012-07-08 11:28:48.0 +0200 @@ -1,3 +1,51 @@ +goobox (3.0.1-5) unstable; urgency=high + + * Urgency high due to RC fix (3rd try) + * Build man pages again on all architectures. Package: release.debian.org User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: freeze-exception Severity: normal Please unblock package goobox Essentially 3.0.1-4 is 3.0.1-1 (from April 20th) with a few translation fixes applied. However, the road was a little bumpy, thus 3.0.1-4 closes an RC bug (namely #679554). It has (finally) build on all architectures. The long history: *) 3.0.1-1.1 was an NMU which did not work *) 3.0.2 reverted the NMU, updated a few translations and run into a FTBS on mipsel (679552). *) 3.0.3 avoided the FTBS by pregenerating the man pages on mipsl, however, the FTBS now appears on ia64 and amd64 as well *) 3.0.4 avoided those FTBS by pregenerating the man pages on all architectures except the uploading one. Are FTBS on mipsel release critical? (goobox #679554)
Hello, after a broken NMU I uploaded (before the freeze) essential the previous version with just some additional translations. For some strange reasons (the code in question has been built fine several times on all archs, including mipsel) the build now fails on mipsel (cf. #679554 and #679552). Looking at http://release.debian.org/wheezy/arch_qualify.html I'm not sure if mipsel is a release architecture. If not, I could downgrade #679554 to important. Of course, hopefully the issue (maybe a temporary glitch?) could be fixed still in time for Wheezy. So, my question: Are FTBS on mipsel (alone) RC? Thanks! This has nothing to do with release.debian.org, but with syncs the website and QA teams are responsible of AFAICT. So it would be sensible to reassign this to www.debian.org? Another fix was proposed in my initial bug report (why is nobody reading this?) already: My suggestion: First update www.debian.org (*with* version numbers) and then push the update out to the mirrors. And secondly unify the versions given in http://packages.debian.org/XXX and http://packages.qa.debian.org/XXX (and in the latter also where the latest one is printed). Fine, a note along this could be put on the above mentioned pages as well. Hope this clarifies. Do you agree to reopen this bug now? (After having explained the initial report again and having proposed two possible solutions) I'm afraid you'll get nowhere by reopening the bug. The sync scripts for packages.debian.org and packages.qa.debian.org are suboptimal in that they show out-of-date information also when there is no point release. So that might be something to look at by the website and/or QA teams. Well, identifying a problem is the first step, even if no (immediate) fix is possible. So that's no reason not to reopen, even if this bug has to remain open for some time to come. And again, reassigning to the www.debian.org seems to make perfectly sense to me now. P.S. And of course, adding version numbers in the NEWS on www.debian.org, e.g. News/2010/20100130.wml, would also solve the immediate problem ... That might be possible, though would need some better integration of the tools (patches are probably welcome) and coordination with the press team that they are fine with the changes. Given that again this happens on the website, I will reopen this bug now and assign it to www.debian.org for their evaluation. Re: Bug #555168: considering the pseudo-licences in locale files as non-free?
Hello Christian, On Sun, Feb 07, 2010 at 03:14:39PM +0100, Christian PERRIER wrote: The mentions in the offending files mentioned in this bug report are very clearly copy and paste that was made without thinking by the people who did so. In some (e.g. de_AT, ca_FR) I see a point of contact mentioned, probably finding their (unfortunately not given) e-mail adress and contacting them could resolve them quickly? Probably _POSIX served as an example? I think the author of this file should be the first contact. A very good example are the wo_SN, ca_AD, eu_FR (and maybe a few others), which I am the author of. So, yes, I am one of those people who didn't even imagine that people would consider locale files as somethign that could have a licence? Yes, at least in the EU collections (even if the individual entries are public knowledge) have a copyright so I thinks (IANAL) that a license is in order. It was definitely not my intent to give a licence to a collection of information that indeed belongs to the public domain. And, still, I blindly and carelessly copied information from another locale. I suggest putting a proper license on them for your entries, as »public domain« is not a universal concept but a license is. A simply BSD one should suffice, then. So, I wonder whether the following: # Distribution and use is free, also for # commercial purposes. should be considered a licence. So, really, considering this as RC for files where even the fact that a licence can apply to, is highly debatable. I therefore suggest that an exception is granted for squeeze to give time to fix this: Since some of them are rather old I think having some more time to fix this (i.e. beyond the release of Squeeze) would be appropriate. - either by rewriting the offending localeswhich would indeed be just copy and paste, as such information has, by definition, only one form First I would try to contact the original authors where possible. Maybe rewriting would then be unecessary. - or by relicensing them (which I'll do immediately for locales I wrote, putting them in the public domain). I'd suggest going for BSD or similar, see above. Release team, would you be OK to grant an exception for locales ad bug #555168? The alternative would of course be to downgrade this bug to severoty important (imho, it should be minor, even). I'd also ask for an exception. [1] This is especially true since several entries are from ISO (cf. de_AT, or especially POSIX) and here copyright is taken care of very carefully (at least usually). But maybe they simply did not think about modification - a mail to Keld Simonsen (he explicitly lists the ISO comittee, he might have the history and contact details of the other authors) should clarify that. -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software libre: http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#568141: release.debian.org: Latest point release hard to follow / confusing
Package: release.debian.org Severity: important Recently a point release was shipped (being installed as I type). Now the News is up (News/2010/20100130.wml) and since it unfortunately as usual does not mention the new version of each software (which is done in every DSA) I as usual went to http://packages.debian.org/XXX for each package XXX to look for the latest version but to my suprise I saw the following: Package/Version shipped vs. http://packages.debian.org/ python-xml (0.8.4-10.1+lenny1) vs. 0.8.4-10.1 wireshark (1.0.2-3+lenny8) vs. 1.0.2-3+lenny7 xfs (1:1.0.8-2.2+lenny1) vs. 1:1.0.8-2.1 kazehakase (0.5.4-2.2+lenny1) vs. 0.5.4-2.2 base-files (5lenny5) vs. 5lenny4 ... Obviously different from previous updates this page is out of date. I was almost considering stopping the update when I checked http://packages.qa.debian.org/XXX instead (how am I to know that this page is correct???). Here for all packages fortunately the latest version was printed, but again confusingly. For example, for dhcp3 in column stable the latest version was given but not in the column stable-sec, while for wireshare it was reversed, i.e. the latest version was in stable-sec not stable column. Upgrading a system is a delicate process. Since there is no DSA I've to rely on www.debian.org that everything is ok. A very basic check is the version number. For this update it was *hard* to check it. My suggestion: First update www.debian.org (*with* version numbers) and then push the update out to the mirrors. I was almost considering stopping the update when I checked http://packages.qa.debian.org/XXX instead (how am I to know that this page is correct???). What are you checking on upgrade? If it's for integrity: point releases are signed with an offline key in addition to the normal archive key. So you can check Release based on Release.gpg and there's then a defined trust path. Essentially it is a second check for integrity (call me paranoid, but I'd like to match the version apt-listchanges displays me to the one I obtained via a different path). It's also a delayed QA, once or twice I caught a typo in a DSA this way. I'm well aware about the trust path and the risks mitigated/involved in the signing process and do not question it. The mail to debian-announce[1] might not list the versions but it does list the changes introduced. And you should be able to find the concrete changelogs a) in the package through apt-listchanges and b) on packages.qa.d.o. Yes, I could compare the changes also, but this is more tedious than version numbers (e.g. for linux-2.6). And up to now the similar sounding site http://packages.debian.org also showed the latest version, which is not the case now. This time only packages.qa.d.o show the latest version, and then sometimes in the category stable and sometimes in stable-sec (I don't know if that was the case previously as well). I'm happy to adjust the process, however it's difficult to get all people involved present and awake for the whole timespan of a point release. (I.e. we started at about 19 UTC and finshed at 23:30 UTC. The mirror push was supposed to happened after the next dinstall at 01:52 UTC. Due to a glitch the actual sync only happened after the ftp-master was awake again at 9:30 UTC. And the press release came in even later, too. So not everything worked as expected on this one.) I'm not detailed in the process (thanks for the explanation) and I just made a suggestion in my intial mail about a possible improvement. So if this unfortunate incident happend because of one time glitches, no problem, but this still would not explain why http://packages.debian.org is outdated. So essentially there should be a canonical reliable way to obtain the version numbers. The full changelog: goobox (2.0.0-3) unstable; urgency=low * L10n upload targetting Lenny * Update Arabic translation from upstream SVN * Update Czech translation from upstream SVN * Update German translation from upstream SVN * Update Brazilian translation from upstream SVN -- Helge Kreutzmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun, 17 Aug 2008 09:57:04 +0200 This is a pure l10n upload an hence should be acceptable for an unfreeze. Unfortunately, just after uploading two bugs have been reported[1], which both are easy and non-intrusive to fix: #495492: Previous upstream versions were able to create mp3 if the necessary package (not in Debian) was present, this is no longer the case. The fix is simple: remove README.Debian and Recommends to gstreamer-lame. Since Lenny users might search for mp3 encoding removing this information might save them some time. This fix does not alter the built binary in any way. #495491: A certain sequence with the preference dialog makes goobox crash (I confirmed this on ppc). The patch has been accepted (slightly updated) by upstream and is attached to this e-mail. While having this fix in Lenny would be nice (and the fix does not alter much), I understand that it might not be acceptable. I confirmed that the fix builds and works on ppc, before upload I would check for building on x86 as well. Would the RMs accept an upload of -4 including the fix for #495492 (and, if possible, for #495491 as well) targetting Lenny? If this is not possible I request a freeze exception for -3. If you need more information do not hesitate to ask. Re: Re: Bug#436267: Firewire support in lenny
Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I do not see why making the old stack available again, but blacklisted by default, discourages testing of the newer stack. If you have both available, then yes, users can switch to the new stack more easily, but at least they will still be using Debian kernel packages, and they can switch back to the juju stack just as well. If you do not make this option available, those who have problems with the new stack will have to compile their own kernels, and then they will not track the Debian kernel packages anymore. Unfortunately there *are* serious security problems with the old stack, but as Guus said, not providing the old stack does not help at all, because right now people will only be annoyed (and seriously annyoed if they discover that the installer regressed (no installation over firewire possible any more!) without notice!). So IMHO provide the new stack by default and add a big notice somewhere like: *Some drivers (e.g. eth1394) do not yet work with the firewire stack enabled by default. For security and performance reasons we strongly recommend to use the drivers provided by default. But if the driver happens to be unusuable, then a) Report this as a bug and b) Do x, y and z to reenable the old driver This way people can use Debian kernels, will provide feedback and improve the situation. Otherwise (like I did, cf. #450836) those people will not test the kernels (and probably will not benefit and test updates regularly either). Please unblock noffle
Hello, I did the German Debconf update. The update was uploaded and at the same time the package was orphaned. The 10 day period for a low upload is now over. I checked the version history and it contains mostly debconf updates (respective to the version currently in Etch): Czech, French, Japanese, German. The only other change looks like a minor fix to me: #408187. I CC'ed the former maintainer in the hope that he might comment if he believes that #408187 is suitable for Etch. If possible, the latest version of noffle should then be unblocked so that all translations (which are excempt from the freeze) can reach Etch. Disclaimer: I've never used noffle, just translated the debconf template. Re: Fwd: goobox REMOVED from testing
Hello, On Sun, Jul 02, 2006 at 01:27:18PM +0200, Andreas Barth wrote: * Helge Kreutzmann ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) [060702 12:42]: goobox was in the way of getting gnome-media, libsexy, xine, ... updated. I will check how the package can go in again after we finished that transition (which might be any time now, as we have most blockers moved apart). Ok, I assumed something like this. Is there any activity expected from the maintainers at this point or do Bin-NMUs need to be scheduled (please do so in this case)? I'm not so sure, if I think activity is necessary I'll submit an appropriate bug report. That's great. I'll be offline for about a week, but afterwards I can prepare a new version if necessary (looking at the console messages, updating to latest standards and similar house keeping work) which I had put off until next upstream release (which IMHO has not happend so far). well, some housekeeping is never wrong. :) Nope, but I just put off an upload for cosmetic housekeeping only. Proper Tag for failure on one arch? was: Re: Bug#279662: zapping: Zapping (on alpha) not releasable
Hello Christian, On Thu, Nov 04, 2004 at 03:35:43PM +0100, Christian Marillat wrote: This is exactly 244011, but I cannot reopen it. It is indeed fixed in unstable, but a new version has not yet propagated to Sarge (I have been busy writing my thesis, hence this late action). Since the current version in Sarge is broken, it either needs to be No, false. This version is broken for only one arch alpha and thus the grave severity should be downgraded to important. Sorry, I forgot to mention the alpha part. I tried to reopen the old one, but it did not work. I CC:'ed Debian-release, because I assumed that all architectures were treated equally and hence the critically (and the Sarge tag) were correct. removed (which is possible as there are other working TV apps available) or needs to be updated to the version in testing. Do you think you are spending your time for nothing ? Try to move this package in testing instead of filing a bug report asking to remove this package. Well, I assumed it'll move into testing. Reading other rc bug reports, I noticed that they were always re-openend and tagged sarge to notice that the migration is still due. Sorry if I am in error on the usage of the Sarge tag. Please let current aboot(-cross|-base) enter Sarge
Hello, please let aboot 0.9b-3 propagate to Sarge. The changes are almost completely documentation changes (e.g., translations which I really like to see in Sarge and added a missing man page). The following code changes have happenend: *)Endian-Fix for Isomarkboot *)Very small code fixes to get aboot compile with gcc 3.4, partially also in TESTING code not normally build. *)netabootwrap now outputs own name instead of bootp. Full changelog below, if more details needed please tell. Thanks! Helge P.S. Please CC: me as I am not subscribed. Changes: aboot (0.9b-3) unstable; urgency=low . * Synced man pages with upstream: aboot.conf.sgml, aboot.sgml, abootconf.sgml, e2writeboot.8, isomarkboot.sgml, sdisklabel.sgml, swriteboot.8. * Took german translation of man pages from upstream. * Minor code issues synced from upstream CVS (partially for testing builds). Closes: #258594. * Include patch to make isomarkboot endian-safe. Thanks to Steve McIntyre, Closes: #253846. * Add netabootwrap man page (english and german). * Fix netabootwrap so that it stops claiming to be bootp. -- Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Apology to german users required in the release notes
Hello, the release notes need to contain a note to users using the german locale along the lines: The Debian Project apologies for the unfortunate german quoting on the command line interface. A solution is worked on, but unfortunately hasn't made it into Sarge. As a workaround, switching to a UTF-8 based locale will avoid the problem. Rational: The current quoting for german locales (german, swiss, austrian, ...) tries to mimic proper german quoting (if UTF-8 is not present) and fails miserably: Opening quotes: ,, Closing quotes: The opening quotes use 2 characters, are visually clearly different from the closing quotes and users are confused because they read the opening quotes as two commas and not opening quote. Consider [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/scratch/incoming/MO/jan02$ /bin/mv -iv bla ~ ,,bla - ,,/home/helge/bla ,,bla entfernt Bugs have been filled on this issue quite a while back ([1], [2]). The entire list [3] has expressed that the this behaviour is highly undesirable. Essentially two solutions have been proposed, and intensivly discussed[4]: A) Using the same quotes as in english, i.e., B) Using inversed french quotes »« The vast majority (c.f. the thread starting at [4]) believes that either solution is much better than the current state. However, the glibc-maintainers expressed concernes about diverging from upstream and pointed out that the bugs where minor and (implicitly) should be fixed at some later stage. Hence the appology is needed, since -- given Debians history -- users of stable employing a german locale will experience the (unambiguously perceived as ugly) quotes for the years to come. The (almost) complete discussion is archived both in various threads on debian-l10n-german and in the bug reports [1] and [2]. Please CC: me as I am not subscribed to debian-release.
