Will downgrade the non-wishlist bug to wishlist. * Removed suspicious lines with single . from man pages, that obviously cause the mandb parse errors. Closes: #88508. * Made uae.1 much more readable. * usr/lib - usr/share. Generally agreeing on reasoning in #88455; however, the source for these tools is helpful under uae as well, and thus stays. Closes: #88455. * Uae is now bsdsocket-patched. Alas: - Due to the weakness of dpkg-source, the bsdsocket.library had to be incorporated into the upstream tarball, hence the new upstream. - The bsdsocket patch _needs_ pthreads, while uae's ./configure would per default not build the svgalib version with threads (as this could/can? lead to lockups with some versions of svga) (= svga would not build). This should not be the case with newer svgalib, so general default is now to build with threads enabled. Closes: #94478. Re: fdisk on sunos
On Mon, 18 Jun 2001, Carlinux wrote: Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie in the Sparc world, and I would like to try some free software on it. We have an Enterprise-250 running SunOS 5.7 at present. Almost nobody in our department makes use of it, so I'd like to install a Debian Potato there. I got the three official CDs for Sparc (and the trhree sources), but my knowledge of Solaris is nearly nullvoid. The 'install instructions' for Debian assumes that the administrator has a background in Solaris [and here I am supposed to be the expert in Unix :-D] So, where could I find a quickstart guide for how to repartition with SunOS fdisk? (after that, boot cdrom and that's all, isn't it? ;-) Hmm, Linux's fdisk can handle things just fine, if you're willing to kill some Sun slices to make room for Linux. This seems to be the logical thing to do: copy the data from a slice or two to somewhere else, change Solaris's mounting rules not to mount the now-unecessary partitions (cursory examination of this machine seems to indicate this is in /etc/mnttab, and yes 'mnttab' is a man topic), and then later in the Linux install retag them as ext2 and mkfs them... If you don't mind killing Solaris you could just do it all w/Linux fdisk. I'm not aware that Sun's fdisk will let you resize partitions, and I'm not at all sure that GNU PartEd is capable of resizing Sun partitions... After that, yes, boot cdrom. The debian/sparc install doc also has info on how to netboot a sparc, in case you find the kernel on the cd's is unhappy for some reason and want to try one of Ben's newer kernels. cheers, ari [EMAIL PROTECTED] /me wishes *his* dept had a spare e250 just sitting around to play with.

New sun4u kernel images
These images are based off of the latest Vger CVS. Also, they've been compiled with the old trusty egcs64 since it seems there is atleast one case of gcc-3.0-sparc64 causing a failure on an E250(or was it E450?). Anyway, if you had unexplained boot failures from the previous images, please try these. One other noteworthy bit, is that these images contain a patch for ieee1394/ohci1394 to make it work for big-endian (IOW, UltraSPARC). Also contains my patch to the SBP-2 (ieee1394 harddrive) driver, which seems to be pretty stable for most cases. Let me know how they do, and I'll get a new set of boot images using these soon. http://auric.debian.org/~bcollins/kernels/ Ben -- ---===-=-==-=---==-=-- / Ben Collins -- ...on that fantastic voyage... -- Debian GNU/Linux \ ` [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ' `---=--===-=-=-=-===-==---=--=---'
problem with xdm in XFree-4.0.3
Hi all, After updating to Xfree-4.0.3, I got a problem relating with xdm when used with X -indirect. I have the following setup 1) launch xdm at boot with the line #:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X ... in Xservers commented out so that xdm doesn't manage the local display. Further, the file Xaccess contains * #any host can get a login window and * CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser 2) then launch X -indirect `hostname` to get a XDMCP chooser window as in an Xterminal. This *has worked* with XFree-3.3.x, but no longer works when I upgrade X to 4.0.3. The problem seems to come from xdm, since: a) launching X -indirect another_host works, if this host is a *unix station*, but not if it is a Linux box with Xfree-4.0.3 installed b) In case (a), the local host doesn't appears in the clooser list where it normally does. In fact the xdm daemon seems to be killed: ps doesn't list any process with name xdm. THis may be a security related problem. I hawever has commented out the last line below in the file xdm-config, as explained before, but *nothing changes* ! SECURITY: do not listen for XDMCP or Chooser requests ! Comment out this line if you want to manage X terminals with xdm !DisplayManager.requestPort: 0 Is it a bug ? Should I report it ? Excellent. and also that the image itself in /boot didn't have -sun4u on the end of it (like the other kernel packages) but that's nitty gritty stuff :) The other images didn't have that. The Debian installer appends it to the name, incorrectly. -- ---===-=-==-=---==-=-- / Ben Collins -- ...on that fantastic voyage... -- Debian GNU/Linux \ ` [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ' `---=--===-=-=-=-===-==---=--=---'
new install on ultra1/creator - cannot get video going
I'm attempting my first sparc/linux install on an ultra 1/167 w/Creator, 256Mb, Quad Ether card, 2 x 9Gb. I'm using Debian Sparc 2.2r3, dated 27/04/01 (potato), I have a 3CD set from a linux vendor. Thing is, I have installed this 3 times now, with reduced number of packages each time, and each time it gets to the video configuration during CD1 I get the message Your video card was successfully identified. The (( Cannot open /proc/bus/pci/devices. You probably have an old kernel. Support for the old Linux PCI interface should be coming soon )) server will be installed [ double (( )) speculatively added by me ] Linux installs correctly aside from the video config. I can't run X in any shape or form. Can anbody suggest what I am missing. I am a Solaris guy normally, please forgive my newbie question... :-) I'm frustrated as I went through the archives and saw specific posts about ultra 1 / creator on debian, so i assumed there would not be a problem, it is a familiar configuration of machine The only thing that was slightly weird during install was that I had to specify my CDROM as /dev/sr0 rather than /dev/cdrom. Even weirder is that I installed an old RedHat 6.0 SPARC on the machine for the hell of it and the X server came up just fine??? However, I really want the up to date Debian release! Help! :-) Howard -- Howard Glynn [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] AOL IM: howgly Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
Re: new install on ultra1/creator - cannot get video going
Hi Howard! I have a Sun Ultra1/Creator3D sitting next to me right now with Debian installed on it. My first install on it went fine (2.2r1 I believe) - do you have an official Debian CD set ? Thing is, I have installed this 3 times now, with reduced number of packages each time, and each time it gets to the video configuration during CD1 I get the message Your video card was successfully identified. The (( Cannot open /proc/bus/pci/devices. You probably have an old kernel. I can't run X in any shape or form. Can anbody suggest what I am missing. I am a Solaris guy normally, please forgive my newbie question... :-) I vaguely remember something like this happening, but I ignored it and X still worked fine. AFAIK X 3.3.6 doesn't use an XF86Config file, so whatever is generated will be ignored - it uses the framebuffer device instead. (X 4.0.1 in unstable does use an XF86Config file, which is what I currently use, and I simply downloaded and used an XF86Config file posted to this group a few months back). Which xserver package did you install ? I used xserver-xsun24, and simply issued xinit and everything worked fine. What error messages are printed to the screen when you start X ? Debian runs quite nicely on an Ultra1 though - hope you're able to get it up and running soon. :-) Cheers, Marcus -- . ,,$, Marcus Crafter ;$' ':Computer Systems Engineer $: : Open Software Associates GmbH $ o_)$$$: 82-84 Mainzer Landstrasse ;$,_/\ :' 60327 Frankfurt Germany ' /( \_' Email : [EMAIL PROTECTED] .Business Hours : +49 69 9757 200 : After Hours: +49 69 49086750
