Re: How to use a serial console on Ultra 1?
John, Booting to serial console is just an alternative. If you want to verify your hardware before you install Linux, you can just boot up your Ultra 1 with Solaris Installation CD. You should be able to verify your keyboard/video/hard disk at minimum. As far as console, minicom works really well from Linux or tip if you have another Solaris box. Just be sure you are using a null modem cable with 8N1 (8 bit/No parity/1 stop bit) setting at 9600 baud. Alex John Zbesko wrote: Thank you for your reply. What I haven't found is instruction on what software to use to actually make the connection. I could use an example, like, open a terminal on the laptop, run minicom (?), set minicom to vt100 emulation, connect to the com port, etc. I would not be so noobie-like, if everything were working fine, but if I'm trying to diagnose a problem, then I need to determine if something is broken, rather than learning how to use a serial logon. Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can change the default resolution at the open boot prompt, as documented at http://040.digital-bless.com/texts/Unofficial_Sun_Blade_100_FAQ.htm (search for output-device on that page). According to that page, 1152 x 900 at 76 Hz is the default resolution. I respectfully beg to differ. That may be the case for Blade100's but my Ultra10 flatly refused to display anything from OBP on a TFT I have and no amount of fiddling with the output-device settings fixed it. Once booted into Linux, however, fbset allowed me to set it up properly and get a prefectly usable 1024x768x60 display. Whether this behaviour is specific to a certain revision of OBP or not I don't know, ymmv. Gary I have Creator 3D in my Ultra 10. I am running it with 1280x1024x67 on my LCD. I booted Solaris via the serial console then ran ffbconfig to find out all combination of supported resolution/frequency. That is the only one works on my LCD. Perhaps, you might want to find out what your hardware is capable of before you can change your setting. Alex -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Sparc hardware will send console to serial A automatically if the keyboard is not connected. Make sure you unplug the keyboard. Very few VGA adapters support 1152x900. Re: Question on mknbi
The netboot package includes /usr/bin/mknbi-linux. I don't know if this is what you are looking for. Keep in mind that the Sparc hardware can only handle a.out binary on netboot. After your kernel compilation, you need to run elftoaout on your uncompressed kernel before you put it out in your tftp server. I don't know if there is any integrated packages to make the task easier. I just started playing with this couple weeks ago. You can use the kernel doc initrd.txt and the program piggyback64 to create your boot image. If you are not building sparc64 kernel, you use piggyback instead. Re: ultra1 creator system freeze after terminal detach
It sounds like hyperterm sends out a break signal during disconnect. There are several ways to correct your problem. 1. Figure out how to disable the sending of the break signal from hyperterm or use other terminal program which does not send out the break signal. 2. You can configure OBP not to react to the break signal. I don't remember how to do this. But this is not a good idea. 3. You can configure the kernel to ignore the break signal. sysctl -w kernel/stop-a=0 On 11/12/2004 12:22 PM, Stefan Bauer wrote: hello, i used a windows box with hyper terminal to connect to my sun workstation via seriel connection (rs232). after finnished the install process i detached the serial connection; reason was a total system freeze of my box. if i restart the connection (from hyper terminal to sun box) i can use 'go' to reactivate the whole box and everything works fine. its a sun ultra1 creator, more infos below: Sun Ultra 1 UPA/SBus (UltraSPARC 167MHz), Keyboard Present OpenBoot 3.25, 128 MB memory installed, Serial #8973688. TIA Ralf Mattes Unless you are looking at testing and reporting problems with the new debian installer, your best be will be to download a woody install image and boot from that. Hmm, that's how i started, but unfortunately my woody installation (vers. info Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r2 Woody - Official sparc Binary-1 CD) doesn't even get this far - it stops during the early boot with a message that claims that the root fs can't be mounted via NFS (???) and prompts me to insert a root floppy (which is kind of hard considering the fact that my box doesn't _have_ a floppy drive. I'd hate to have to install a floppy just to install Debian). Thanks RalfD After you install the base system, do a dist-upgrade and you should be ready to go. If you just want to get back to work, this is the way to go about it. Good luck, Tomislav Renic Are you trying to do a netboot installation? If you just boot from the cdrom without any parameter, the kernel will not try to do NFS mount. If you are doing netboot, which tftpboot.img did you use? I just finished my netboot installation, the kernel does not do NFS mount. I manually selected it during the installation.
Is there such a thing Sparc diskless firewall/router?
I used to run a Sparc Classic as my Firewall/Router. Recently, the hard disk died. I am wondering if anyone has any pointer to diskless Sparc Firewall/Router. Most of the Linux Firewall/Router projects expect your hardware to be Intel. Just wondering if such thing exist on the Sparc platform. Is there any Sparc Live CD similar to the Intel Knoppix? The terminal server of Knoppix can accomplish what I want. This is why I am looking something like Knoppix. Any pointer is appreciated. Thanks. Alex

A break signal on the sun serial port drops it into the openboot prompt. 'go' restarts it where it left off. In rs232 a break is signaled by holding the line low for longer than 10 bit times (therefore it cannot be a valid byte b/c a valid byte would have ended with a high stop bit at the 9th bit[1]). Some PCs inadvertently drive TX low for that long as power goes down. There isn't much you can do; I even tried lowering the baud rate and even as 1200 the PC's signal was long enough to act as a break. -Nicolas Dade [1] assuming 8N1; the principal is the same with other data settings--- a break is unambiguously not a data transfer Run this command to over come the hardware BREAK signal: /sbin/sysctl -w kernel/stop-a=0 The above is the same as Solaris /etc/default/kbd with: KEYBOARD_ABORT=disable

SS5 170 crashed with 2 S-Bus Happy Meal
The SS5 170 is my Masquerade machine. It was running solid with Woody before I replaced the second Lance card with the 2 Happy Meals. I was testing to see how much throughput I gain with the Happy Meal. I ran ftp behind the SS5 using an Ultra 2 with Solaris 9. Upload or download would lock up the SS5. I did not get any error from the console since it is running headless nor anything in /var/log. It will not even accept a [Break] key to escape to the OBP. Both Happy Meals are good. I tested them individually in the Ultra 2 and got 9.5MB/s with crossover cable to Windows 2k. Has anyone seem this? Any suggestion what else I should try? Thanks.

How to obtain a list of deb packages after [Select] of dselect
