Can some kind soul tell me if there is a libg++ for the aout compiler,
or, if not, how to get a ELF binary to run on a stock 1.2.0 kernel
aout system? I have elf enabled in the kernel, but it doesn't run..
I forget the message right now. It's a farily simple c++ program,
but it's running (or supposed to) on an embeded system based on
1.2.0

I am working on this for Debian 1.2 . Currently, you have to go through
the 5-floppy thing as detailed in my installation document on our WWW
site and also via FTP as
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/stable/disks-i386/current/install.html .

I am planning to make 3 initrd files. Which one you use depends on how
much RAM you have. The smallest one boots to a miniroot, and you have
to feed in a floppy to get the device driver modules. This is
suitable for 4MB systems. The next larger one contains the miniroot
and all of the modules, and you have to feed in floppies for the base
system. This is suitable for 8MB system. The largest contains the entire
base system, and is suitable for 16MB systems. These should run directly
off of a CD or DOS partition, and will make floppy-less install possible
for most people.

Re: Latex: where to install new styles? Mf: how to muzzle?

1996-09-06 Thread RHS Linux User
Hi there

I normally assume that Latex should be installed in /usr/local/texmf
 where all the libraries and styles are included. for everything to work
perfectly you should add the proper paths in the /etc/bashrc or .bashrc

export TEXMF=/usr/local/texmf
export TEXINPUTS=.:$TEXMF/tex/latex2e//:$TEXMF/tex//

with these paths all the needed styles and defs are found by the system.

However and I dont know why linux distributions came with texmf installed
in the /usr/lib/texmf

which is almost the same thing.

so what I should do in your case could be one of the two following things:

 - reinstall the latex package in the /usr/local/
   and install the new styles in the styles directory inside texmf

   or go ahead and install the packages in /usr/local but create a
simbolic link in the styles directory inside /usr/lib/texmf where ever it is.

hope this helps

installing debian with initrd

1996-09-06 Thread Marty Leisner

Is there a compressed filesystem in a file somewhere (I already have
a kernel) where I can just do:

loadlin kernel initrd=image.gz root=/dev/ramdisk

and start installing?

I do kinda the same thing with slackware [I know how to (I never tried
debian), I know what I have to do to install slackware (I mount the slackware
disk on some other directory have my initrd), I'd like a more
integrated approach...

If it's a module, try "modprobe eepro io=0x230". If that works, add it

Re: time to split the list?

1996-09-06 Thread Winfried Truemper

I'm only subscribed to lists which do not carry more than 10 mails/week.
This way my mailbox keeps mostly interesting stuff which I can oversee.

It is a _must_ to convert high-traffic lists into newsgroups because:

   - one gets overwhelmed by the number of e-mails per day,
   - the disk gets clobbered by the size of the whole bunch (argh, I
 had 5 people sumitted to "debian-users" on my system),

   - newbies are not capable of (or have other problems than) setting
 up e-mail filters to sort the whole junk (hint: gnus is really
 cool),

   - high-traffic often means "general interest" (so why not make it
 more public?),

   - one actually pays for the whole junk to download it via modem,

   - one has to unsubscribe when going on holidays,

On the other hand I see that

   + developers need to communicate more quickly than via news (takes
 up to 4 days)

   + it is much easier to create a mailing-list than a newsgroup

So my suggestions are:

   o Tell the people about the newsgroup "linux.debian.users" as an
 alternative to the mailinglist when confirming their
 subscription.
 Ignoring the technical stuff is a special case of ignoring
 subjects of no personally interest and can be done with most
 news-readers.
 (Yes, you can do this "easily" with mailinglist by using gnus,
  too but thats the exception.)

   o make at least "debian-users-digest" for those people who want to
 keep on with the most interesting things

   o split the mailing-list to keep developers off from
 newbie-questions (they are likely to "waste" their time!) into

 debian-installation
 for questions "not" covered by the installation-manual :-)

 debian-newbies
 for those who have at least reached the login-prompt
 but aren't familiar with the system yet [no technical
 discussion allowed here; even such evil words as "emacs",
 "kernel" and such are strictly forbidden] :-)

 debian-users
 the good old list; for "long-time" debian-users

 debian-towers
 high-level technical discussions

   o make a "debian-all-digest" from all that lists above

As kpathsea searches recursively (see /usr/lib/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf), I
usually keep some subdirs (that match the CTAN structure).

Hm, I presume netscape just calls xdvi as you would from the command line.
So you have to configure it anyway. One file that needs some configuration
is
/usr/lib/texmf/dvips/config.ps
for things as resolution, papersize, ... This should probably be in /etc and
softlinked back to /usr/lib/texmf/dvips/config.ps

Actually this is a link to test. POSIX.2 (?) mandates its existence
for shells which don't provide it. It's listed in dpkg -L shellutils,
btw. There must be a bug in your script which generated this list.

These were created by /usr/sbin/MAKEFLOPPIES when you installed

I would guess most of the other files are managed by the package's

More precisely, it says

Content-type: application/pgp;
format=mime; x-action=signclear; x-originator=29160A2D

That MIME content type is based on a draft-RFC, which has
since been withdrawn. The PGP/MIME stuff I mentioned

The old draft is supported by many mailers, the new one by
very few (I only know of exmh). I use it because it makes
life much easier for people who don't have PGP support at
all, but do have MIME support. (People who don't have MIME
support need to upgrade, anyway.)

No, this is the Binary "test", it is needed for things like "[ -f "bla" ]"

POSIX afaik.

DON'T DO IT!

Whew---sorry for shouting, but: This is indeed a file named ``['',
and it's executable (hence the ``*'' in what must be an ls -lF
listing).

``['' is a synonym for the ``test'' command, used in shell programming
constructs such as:

if [ -z "`hostname`" ]; then
hostconfig -p bootparams
fi

(from my rc.boot file [I'm using Solaris at the moment, not Linux :-( ]).

   If you remove /bin/[, more stuff will break than you knew you had.

   FWIW, ``/etc/passwd~'' is the name emacs gives to a backup file
when it's edited /etc/passwd. If you use emacs, that's where it came
from. Maybe other editors use the same convention?

Boot Hangs on New Install

1996-09-06 Thread Kevin K. Lewis

I just installed Debian 1.1 last night (overwriting my old Slackware
install). I got through the smoke-test (ie, reboot), and everything
seemed fairly okay (got a couple warnings about post?-install scripts
not being found). I installed my packages, setup X (my mouse won't
work ;-), user accounts, etc.

I then went to reboot. I got:

LILO: Loading Linux

And that's it. No dots. Nothing. But my disk light stayed on. So I
decided to wait a bit. Still nothing. So I rebooted with my custom
floppy.  Came up fine.

My root disk (/) is hda1, set as bootable. It's about 350MB (is this
a problem?). The rest of this disk went to a 64MB swap. There is
another disk (hdb) mounted on `/archive'.

I didn't try just using `vmlinux' instead of `vmlinuz' (I'd have to
take the `compact' out of `lilo.conf', right?). I did compile and
install a new kernel, but it didn't help.

Does anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong? I've had my old
Linux install working for ~3years. Never a problem like this.

Thanks for any help.

I suspect that the intimidation is more due to the volume of mail
(specially if these folks are suggesting that a news group would be a
better forum) and simply don't wish to deal with that volume. Any good
mail viewer (even pine) provide good sort facilities (to pull a thread

technical.
Another point: Our mailing lists are some of the most friendly forums
available on the net and only the most obnoxious folks recieve any flames.

I would prefer debian-install, debian-user, and debian-devel. I don't see
any discussion of Debian that could go into debian-nontechnical. Even a
discussion of the color scheme in dselect could quickly degenerate into a
technical discussion. As has been stated elsewhere, we already have
debian-talk, which satisfies all needs for off-topic discussions.

I have no problems with splitting the mailing lists (they currently all
come to me) but would be very opposed to moving them to news groups.
However, a moderated news group that feeds both from and to the mail lists
could be an advantagious setup.

Thanks for your time,

I agree with this. There are probably be many people who would be

Don't delete '/usr/bin/['.
It's a hardlink to /usr/bin/test and alot of shell-scripts uses this in
if-statements etc.

If the '*' is part of the filename, I agree. If not, this is necessary for
shells that do not have test as a builtin. It should be a hardlink to 'test'
(necessary for constructs like

if [ $1 = $2 ]
then
echo equal
fi
)

I guess it's output from ls -F.

APM is in the "Character Devices" menu, after mice and tape and before
watchdog.

Quite, especially with the apmd package. The suspend and sleep features are
very nice.

Your Elm probably doesn't support PGP/MIME. See

I never had any problem whatsoever with LaTeX under Debian. And I update to
the most recent "rex" releases every two or three days (dselect rules !!).

I'll send you my "dpkg -l" output in private mail.

Hello

Another possibility is that you are trying to use some of the
following commands inside a mathematical formula, without using
\mbox.  From Latex - A Doc. prep. system (Lamport, L.,) pg. 38-39:
--- ... "The command in Table 3.2 can appear only in paragraphy
and LR modes; use an \mbox command to put one inside a mathematical
formula.

 \oe\aa\l ?'
 \OE\AA\L !'
 \ae\o \ss

RE: files without package

1996-09-06 Thread Casper BodenCummins
Not all files will be listed in the Contents and related files. Some are
created during package configuration, some later. Almost all the files
you listed are normal. However, I'd check these:

  /usr/lib/texmf/ini/core
  Not sure if this should be here. Run a `file /usr/lib/texmf/ini/core'.
If
  the message includes `core file' you can remove the file. Otherwise
*DON'T*.
  A core file can be generated when an application does something
forbidden,
  like addressing a non-existent memory location. It is basically an
image of
  the process at the time of the error. You don't need them unless you
want to
  analyse the problem.

  /etc/passwd~
  Looks like a temp file. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  /usr/bin/[*
  This is junk. Blow it away.

  /usr/bin/X11.old
  Can't think why this should be around if you didn't create it
yourself.
  Anyone else know?

  /dev/initctl|
  /dev/printer=
  /dev/xconsole|
  Are there really these symbols on the end?

eepro.c

1996-09-06 Thread Jan Ramon

eepro.c seems to be convinced that he must probe for internet
etherexpress at 0x240.

I also found

static unsigned int eepro_portlist[] =
   { 0x200, 0x240, 0x280, 0x2C0, 0x300, 0x320, 0x340, 0x360, 0};

So, eepro.c is also convinced that a card on 0x230 can't exist.
This isn't true. My card is on 0x230. I (finally) solved the problem saying

>int
>eepro_probe(struct device *dev)
>{
>int i;
>int base_addr = dev ? dev->base_addr : 0;
>
>// /// begin of jan's code
>dev->base_addr = base_addr = 0x230;
>// /// end of jan's code
>
>if (base_addr > 0x1ff)  /* Check a single specified
>location. */
>return eepro_probe1(dev, base_addr);
>

but this doesn't seem a clean way to solve the problem. Is there info
(doc/howto/) available about clean kernel programming?

On the other hand, a little sorting saves a lot of time - time that can
be used to actively contribute. I voiced my support for Bruce's idea,
but also said that we could compromise by having at least a separate
debian-install list. There are several issues:

i. We are probably losing potential Debian users due to the size and
significant inaccessible technical content of debian-user. 60-70
messages
a day is a lot to cope with, especially when you have other
interests.
When much of it is Double Dutch, you tend to feel intimidated.
* we lose fewer fans
ii. Decreasing the amount of irrelevant or uninteresting traffic leaves
more
time to spend usefully contributing.
* we have more useful time
iii.Some people get a real kick out of helping a newbie into the fray.
Some
do some of the time. Others don't. If someone /wants/ to help,
they'll
subscribe. If they don't have time today, well they can just junk
all the
traffic in that list for today. Doing this manually is a bind.
I agree that we'll lose some help because people who would have been
able
to assist with a problem didn't subscribe to the debian-install
list, but
I also think that there'll still be sufficient altruism and
expertise
available. The trade-offs are worth it.
* we save effort

>I, for example, probably will not subscribe to the install and non-tech
>groups

I imagine that, in a similar vein, you also don't spend much time read
non-technical and installation-specific posts. More's the better for you
if the traffic isn't there in the first place.

>(maybe not even "technical" since I don't understand what each
>is for) and thus will not see questions regarding my packages.
>My personal opinion is that splitting the lists will add much confusion
>and help little.

I really don't see much difficulty is interpreting Bruce's categories.
Do you think the titles are confusing? Suppose we just had debian-user
and debian-install. Would this be okay?

After reading your posts, I'm coming around to the view that two groups
- debian-user and debian-install - would be best. There is perhaps
insufficient non-technical discussion to warrant a separate list.

RE: newsgroup creation RFD - draft

1996-09-06 Thread Casper BodenCummins
If there are 500 posts a day to comp.lang.c++, it strikes me that this
group is *begging* to be split up. Besides the
wading-through-heaps-of-stuff-you-'re-not-interested-in factor, some of
us have to pay to receive news articles and suchlike, and a better
targeted audience would save us lots of time and money.

I think having these lists gatewayed to official "big-7" newsgroups is
a good idea. As per my thoughts on splitting the list, I don't think
"debian-user" should be split into three separate groups.

Over 500 posts a day can come into groups like "comp.lang.c++" with
everything from newbies to experts and it doesn't get split up.
Threaded
newsreaders take up most of the slack, and make it much easier to manage
than your standerd (un-filtered) mail reader.

This is not the reason. Accented characters do work in LaTeX as in
TeX. Actually the following text:

---
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\"a.

\end{document}
---

does produce an umlaut on the a. The problem may come from the fact that you
use a wrong encoding (eg.: you actually typed a real "ä" using iso-latin1
and you use a US cmr font instead of using the "EURO" DC font. In this case,
and if you use LaTeX2e style as above, try using

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}).

So the following text will be Ok (but would'nt w/o the fontenc package).

---
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\begin{document}

ä

\end{document}
---

(NOTE: You will probably get an error message telling that dcr1000.mf is not
found: the Debian LaTeX DC font installation is FAULTY here (a mismatch
between the version of the DC fonts and the version of the font description
files). Try getting the last version of the DC fonts on a CTAN archive (see
below). You'll find them in

fonts/dc/ready-mf/*

(these files should replace all the files that are in
/usr/lib/texmf/fonts/source/public/dc/ )

fonts/dc/tfm/*

(these files should relplace all files in
/usr/lib/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/dc/)

I believe that dosmu still needs it's hacked version of insmod to
work. It uses some kernel symbols that aren't exported, and because of
the state of dosemu and future plans, they won't be for the
moment. I believe that it's called insmod-hacker or something like

Printing problems

1996-09-06 Thread Matthew D Moss
I'm having problems getting pages to come out of my
printer correctly.  The symptoms:

  1) Small text files don't print. The printer heads move
  around a bit (as bubblejets like to do) but never gets
  to printing.

  2) Larger files (text/postscript) will print, but usually
  starting much further into the file. Postscript files
  print with some garbage near the top of the first printed
  page and double-spaced (as if some key info at the beginning
  of the PS code was missing).

  3) Printing a file and immediately printing it again will cause
  the second to print correctly as if the printer had
  warmed up on the first job and moved onto the second job.
  This works for text and postscript.

I didn't have these problems using Debian 0.96; this only started
after installing 1.1. Here are the key parts I am using:

Debian  1.1
kernel  1.3.95 #6
lpr 5.9-11
gs  2.62-2
magicfilter 1.2

my printer  Canon BJC-610
(it's set in BJ-10 mode using the bj10e magicfilter)

Any suggestions?  Thanx in advance...

Yes. Lucid Emacs was a version of Emacs forked off the GNU version by
a company called Lucid (duh :) for use with their C development
environment. When Lucid folded, the 'net community took over
development and made it XEmacs (for eXtended Emacs). It's available
as a debian package in unstable/editors. Works well for me, so far.

Hi Hakan --
You said:
> I am having trouble with the latex font, all non normal characters like

> moticed this?

As far as I can tell, these are not LaTeX constructions, but TeX constructions.
I made a silly .tex file with these lines:

=begin junk.tex
backslash quote curly-brace a curly-brace is \"{a}.
backslash a a is \aa.
\vfill \eject \end
=end   junk.tex

Then I ran
tex junk
dvips -o morejunk junk
ghostview morejunk

and the characters showed up just as expected.

You can get an umlaut (Tex \"{a}) in LaTeX by using the german option
to the babel package:
   \usepackage[german]{babel}

I suspect you can get an Angstrom (Tex \aa) in LaTeX by using the
swedish option. You can use two options at once by giving them as
a comma seperated list:
   \usepackage[german,swedish]{babel}

Good luck,
Susan Kleinmann

Loading failed! The module symbols (from linux-2.0.17) don't match your

This has also happened with the debianized kernel packages. I think that there
